HTML compromise at Rantburg

We are getting an html redirect to a page with a connection to Scorecard Research. The new page blocks out the original page request, and on Chromium, you can't go back.

It has been suggested (and this is an old compromise) that it is a virus of some kind.

I have installed Ad Block Plus on my browser, and the problem seemed to have gone away for the moment. I've looked over Fred's code, as well as the original HTML code and the only thing I can find is this Scorecard Research problem.

Rantburg.com regular Glenmore says that other sites have been affected as well, so I suspect it is on Scorecard Research to fix their code.

BTW, blocking Scorecard Research doesn't help. It is an HTML compromise.

Best I can do at the moment.

#1  I saw a post on another site hit with a similar redirect issue (though to another destination) which they had traced to a compromise of Sitemeter. I note that Sitemeter is running here as well. (I'm running NoScript and seeing no redirect.)

#2  I use Pale Moon browser - {the faster sleeker version of Firefox}, and I use an add-on with it -BluHell. I also use the add-on Ghostery.
These 2 addons take the place of several other add-ons like Noscript & Adblockplus, without slowing down your computer as much like these tend to do and keeping you better protected.

If you use Firefox already, they make it easy to import your settings from Firefox to Pale Moon including bookmarks and add-ons.
You can keep both browsers on your machine if you want to, so theres no risk in testing out this new stuff.
I've been using this combination for several months now and haven't had any redirects, bombs or popups ...etc.
And browsing is much faster and safer.

I suggest anyone less than satisfied with other browsers and internet protections, give this combo a try.
Chrome is a good browser but I don't like the fact that it "phones home" and I don't like the way that google already tracks and gets all up in your business. Why let them track your surfing habits too.

Hope this helps.

BTW... I also use and recommend another Firefox add-on called Interclue.
Interclue allows you to hover over and see the contents at links, before you actually open them.
Great for "speed surfing" the net, as well as keeping you safe from clicking on bad websites or NSFW sites, you might otherwise have opened.
Very handy indeed.

Stay safe out there!

Last French hostage freed in Mali
The last French hostage to be held by Islamist militants has been freed after three years, French President Francois Hollande has announced. Lazarevic, he said, was in "relatively good health" despite the difficult conditions of his captivity and was on his way to Niger from where he would return to France.

Hollande said, "There are no more French hostages in any country in the world."

He thanked the authorities in Niger and Mali, who had "worked towards this happy outcome".

There have been no details about how Lazarevic's release was secured. France's government has repeatedly denied paying ransom for hostages.

Serge Lazarevic was seized in Mali in November 2011 along with fellow Frenchman Philippe Verdon. Militants from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) killed Verdon last year in retaliation for the French intervention in Mali.

The ransom might have been the FFL or another equally odious group of Frenchmen slinking about in the night.

Arabia
Yemen Attacks Kill 9 Soldiers in 24 Hours
Al-Qaida is claiming two suicide car bombings on a military base in southern Yemen Tuesday that killed seven soldiers.

The militant group ambushed another military facility in the same province of Hadramout late Monday, killing two other soldiers.

The attacks come amid ongoing political turmoil in the country, which has seen several changes in leadership in recent months and a continuing battle against al-Qaida affiliates and Shi'ite Muslim rebels.

On Saturday, at least 11 people were also killed in a failed U.S.-led operation to rescue two foreign hostages in Yemen.

The men, an American journalist and a South African teacher, were shot by their captors and died during the mission.

Bangladesh
Eight NLFT militants gunned down
Indian security forces in a joint operation with their Bangladeshi counterparts gunned down eight National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants in Chittagong Hill Tracts of the neighboring country last month. The security forces destroyed many of their hideouts in Khagracherri district of Bangladesh forcing NLFT rebels to flee to nearby Bandarban district.

Indian forces along with a Tripura police team and two surrendered rebels, had left for the neighboring country on November 17, to take part in anti-insurgency operations. The combined team of security forces from both countries subsequently launched an operation on November 22 and the next day, they arrested NLFT commander Kwaplai Debbarma, alias Karna, from the house of a former All Tripura Tiger Force commander Jewel Debbarma.

Following Debbarma's arrest, 36 militants living in Dighinala fled and took shelter in nearby Keuman in Bandarban district.

On November 29, the team launched a fierce assault on NLFT militants holed up in Naraicherra and killed a group of eight rebels led by Rathamoni Koloi.

Europe
Moldova detains seven suspected of uranium smuggling
CHISINAU -- Police in Moldova said on Tuesday they had detained seven people suspected of smuggling radioactive Uranium-238 on a train from Russia, a substance they said could have been used to make a "dirty bomb".

Police discovered about 200 grams (7 oz) of hazardous substances worth about 1.7 million euros ($2.1 million) during a sting operation last week, said Ion Bodrug, head of an Interior Ministry investigative department. The last known attempt to sell U-238 in Moldova was in August 2010 when police arrested three people from organized crime groups.

"After a preliminary examination we realized we were talking about Uranium-238, an extremely dangerous radioactive substance used to make 'dirty' nuclear bombs," he told a news conference.

Another dangerous substance, mercury, was also discovered by the police, who believe the gang's aim was to sell the materials in Europe, Bodrug said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is in "touch with Moldovan authorities regarding the case", senior IAEA official Serge Gas said in an email. He gave no further detail.

The Vienna-based United Nations agency has stepped up calls on member states to tighten security to prevent nuclear and radioactive materials from falling into the wrong hands. Last year, the IAEA said that more than 100 incidents of thefts and other unauthorized activities involving nuclear and radioactive material are reported by member states annually.

He was caught on a bus from Brussels carrying a revolver and Kalashnikov rifle in his luggage, and has since been charged with ?murder in a terrorist context.?

Those arrested on Tuesday include people Nemmouche may have met while in detention, said a source close to the case. Further details about them were not known.

Home Front: WoT
Man shot dead after stabbing Jews in Brooklyn
A deranged man screaming "I want to kill the Jews!" invaded the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn early Tuesday and stabbed a yeshiva student in the head before he was shot dead by police.

Levi Rosenblat was praying when Calvin Peters barged inside, whipped out a knife with a 5-inch blade and attacked him, witnesses said.

"Levi had his hands up, trying to block the individual with his arms," Mendy Notik, 22, said. "He was saying. ‘I will kill you.' And after Levi, he went towards another young student and he said 'I will kill the Jews!'"

Notik said Rosenblat was bloodied but somehow managed to escape.

"He had blood on his shoulder, coming out from the side of his head and he was screaming, ‘He stabbed me! He stabbed me!'" Notik said of his friend. "He was in a panic."

Summoned by other screaming yeshiva students, Officer Timothy Donohue, who is based at the Lubavitcher headquarters in Crown Heights, called for backup and raced inside to confront Peters. During a tense standoff, Donohue and two other cops ordered Peters to put down the bloody knife.

Peters, a 49-year-old crook turned doting dad who suffered from bipolar disorder, complied at first, placing the knife on a table, police said. But for reasons nobody will ever understand, Peters suddenly grabbed it back and charged before he was shot in the stomach by Officer Roberto Pagan, police said.

"He was going towards the officer," a 19-year-old Hasidic witness said. "His eyes were bulging."

In startling video first posted by Israeli news site 0404, Donohue and the other officer could be heard repeatedly yelling at Peters to put down the weapon. Some of the students in the center could also be heard pleading with Peters to give up. Then a single shot rang out, hitting Peters and ending the drama on Eastern Parkway.
Suicide by cop...
Rosenblat, 22, was rushed to trauma unit at Kings County Hospital and later transferred to Bellevue Hospital where he was in critical condition with bleeding on the brain, police and sources said.

"Earlier today we all felt pretty good that he was stable, but now it seems they found something they didn't know this morning and he's in pretty serious shape," said Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn).

Rosenblat's mother was en route from Israel, sources said. They live south of Jerusalem in Jewish settlement Beitar Illit, located in the West Bank.

"I've known him from when he was a child," Menahem Giladi, 22, said of Rosenblat. "He had a surgery and he is out now; he is not awake. Now we are waiting to see what happens; we hope and pray that he will get better."

The attack on the nerve center of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement immediately drew comparisons to the slaughter at an Orthodox-Jewish synagogue in Jerusalem last month by a pair of meat cleaver-wielding Palestinians that left four rabbis dead.

Rabbi Motti Seligson, a Lubavitcher spokesman, said multiple witnesses heard Peters screaming about killing Jews. "He was heard saying, ‘Kill the Jews,' or something to that effect," Seligson said.

But Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said this appeared to be the work of a troubled man with a long rap sheet -- not a terrorist plot.

"We are very, very confident it's not a terrorist-related act at this stage," Bratton said. "There's no indication that the subject ... had any affiliation with any terrorist organization."
Um, ok, sure, you're "very very" confident...
Peters was emotionally disturbed and "has a history of acting out in other places," added John Miller, the NYPD's anti-terrorism czar.

#2  The other thing is that the insane are as prone to fashions as the rest of society. Just now killing Jews is in the news, so that's what will be understood by the patient as the driver, whereas someone in a religious Christian environment will feel driven by or for angels and devils, and not long ago it was all aliens and their probes or secret radio waves blocked by tinfoil hats.

India-Pakistan
Militant Linked to Attack on Bhutto Killed in Karachi
[AnNahar] Police in Pakistain said Tuesday they had killed a Taliban capo responsible for a kaboom in 2007 that killed 139 people in a botched attempt to assassinate ex-premier Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
Firdous Khan was killed in an hour-long shootout with police in the Manghopir neighborhood of the country's biggest city Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, said Usman Bajwa, a bigwig in the Crime Investigations Department.

Bajwa told AFP Khan was the criminal mastermind of the devastating bombing near Bhutto's truck at a political rally during her Pakistain homecoming parade in October 2007.

Bhutto survived the attack but was assassinated two months later in a gun and suicide kaboom at a rally in Rawalpindi.

"Firdous Khan was a Taliban capo who acted as a controller and trained the jacket wallah and later took him to the target," said Bajwa.

The then-administration of military ruler Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
blamed the liquidation on Pak Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, who denied any involvement. He was killed in a U.S. drone attack in August 2009.

Bajwa said the shootout took place between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Other turbans escaped during the exchange of fire by taking advantage of the darkness, he said.

Karachi, a city of 18 million people which contributes 42 percent of Pakistain's GDP, has been plagued by sectarian, ethnic and political violence for years.

The city is also racked by murderous Moslems, especially the Taliban.

More than 7,000 people have been killed in the insurgency by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain since it began in 2007, according to an AFP tally.

Eleven militants killed in fresh Khyber airstrike
PESHAWAR: At least 11 militants were killed and 12 others injured as jet fighters struck militant hideouts in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency on Tuesday, Pakistan’s military claimed.

A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that jet fighters targetted and destroyed three militant bases in Kukikhel, Malikdin Khel, and Akakhel areas of Tirah Valley in the fresh airstrike. The information, however, could not be verified independently as journalists’ access is restricted in the troubled area.

Pakistan Army launched the operation 'Khyber-1' in October with airstrikes against Lashkar-i-Islam (LI) hideouts in areas under the Mangal Bagh-led group’s control in Tirah and Bara.

The latest operation was launched amidst Zarb-i-Azb, a full-fledged military operation being conducted by the Army against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militants in the North Waziristan tribal region.

Thousands of families have flocked to refugee camps in Bannu ever since the launch of operation in June.

Study: Israeli home demolitions deter terrorism
Israeli house demolitions effectively decrease terrorist attacks, according to a new study.

The study, “Counter-Suicide-Terrorism: Evidence from House Demolitions,” to be published in the January issue of the Journal of Politics, found that Israel’s policy of demolishing the homes of Palestinian terrorists causes “an immediate, significant decrease in the number of suicide attacks.”

Co-authored by researchers at Northwestern University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the study runs contrary to the widely held belief that punitive house demolitions do not dissuade would-be terrorists.

When war "hits home" people really begin to pay attention. It works. At some point you almost have to tear down everything before it can be rebuilt in a different form.

I'm not so certain it works for the troglodytes in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It hasn't really been tried there other than in the early days after 911 and only for a short while in a limited way. Intensive bombings brought the North Viets and Viet Cong to consider surrendering during the Vietnam War until they realized there was a growing left opposition in the U.S. and they instead decided to hang on. Thanks Walter Cronkite (sarc).

Remove Islam, which says everything has to be done the same way Mohammed supposedly did it, and even the Arabs can learn when enough pain is applied.

Two Arrested Outside Settlement As Possible Attack Thwarted
[IsraelTimes] Two Paleostinians, one of them armed with a knife, were detained by security forces as they approached a settlement south of Jerusalem on Tuesday.

The men were apprehended near Tekoa, in the southern West Bank, by the settlement?s security coordinator and a group of IDF soldiers who were called to the scene.

During initial questioning the men confessed to planning an attack on the community, according to reports.

The Paleostinians were identified as two Hebron-area residents who had been sought by Israeli security forces since Friday, after the army received information of a possible planned terror attack.

One of the detained men was identified as Hebronite Muhammad Abu Aysha, 34, a relative of Amer Abu Aysha, one of the two men who kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers in June, according to the Paleostinian Ma?an News Agency.

The second man was named as Jabrin Muntaz, 17, from the town of Yatta outside Hebron.

A large manhunt was dispatched in the Hebron area Monday night to search for the two, the army said.

A statement from Tekoa said the two had approached near the settlement to carry out a terror attack, but were thwarted by ?alert security.?

Pictures circulated on social media Tuesday morning allegedly showed one of the suspects handcuffed and a weapon that appeared to be a cutlery knife.

During the incident, residents of the settlement were instructed to stay indoors as security forces swept the area to ensure it was safe.

US Man Arrested in Israel for Plot to Blow Up Muslim Holy Sites
Israeli police have arrested an American man for an alleged plot to blow up Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.

Police identity the suspect as Adam Everett Livvix, a Christian from the southwestern state of Texas.

He has been charged with illegal weapons possession, planning a terrorist attack, and staying in Israel after his visa expired. Police say he has fully cooperated with them.

Police say Livvix entered Israel last year from the Palestinian Territories, where an unknown Palestinian approached him and asked him to assassinate President Barack Obama during the president's visit to the region.
The Times of Israel adds:
Livix, 30, a Christian from Texas who pretended to be a Navy SEAL, is wanted in the US for questioning regarding drug violations and has been in police custody in Israel since November 19, the police said.

Soldier Hurt From Stones Thrown In Nazareth
[Ynet] IDF soldier lightly maimed by stones thrown by unknown perpetrators; stones thrown at bus in West Bank, no injuries

An IDF soldier was lightly maimed on Monday after unknown perpetrators threw stones at him in Nazareth, in northern Israel. He suffered wounds to his head and was evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment. Nazareth police is searching the area for possible suspects and noted that it would act "with a heavy hand against those who throw stones and endanger the lives of people".

"Ever since the police shooting that killed Khair Hamdan, there have been a number of stone throwing incidents in Kafr Kanna at buses carrying Jews," said Anan, a resident of Nazareth.

"The throwing of stones at the soldier is a continuation of the same incidents ? those behind it are people whose sole purpose is to ignite the city. The residents of Nazareth are against such acts. We want to live in peace and do not want riots."

Later Monday, stones were thrown at a bus traveling in the area of Tekoa in Gush Etzion towards Jerusalem. No injuries were reported, but damage was caused to the bus' windshield.

"We passed Ma'ale Amos (a settlement in the southern West Bank) towards Efrat and then several boys stepped out from behind trees in an olive grove and threw stones at us," one passenger said. "They either threw them very hard, or used a slingshot or something else, because the impact was very intense."

Another passenger said that rock-throwing incidents are a recurring phenomenon in the area, and added that "nothing can be done. Had they thrown the stones at a vehicle without protective shields, the result would have been severe. After the incident, the driver continued driving and reported the incident to the police. We rely on drivers to know what to do, as they are already experienced in such matters.

11 killed in Bukidnon bus blast
Eleven were killed and more than 40 injured when a bus exploded in Bukidnon province Tuesday evening. Most of the victims were students, who were about to go home when the blast occurred. Nine of the 11 fatalities, five men and four women, died on the spot, and two others died later.

A police spokesperson said an improvised bomb with mobile phone as trigger mechanism was used in the explosion. She said the bomb was apparently hidden in a sack placed in the vehicle's overhead baggage rack.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred more than a month after another bus also exploded in Bukidnon injuring four. The bus firm had been receiving extortion letters demandin protection money.

Superintendent Bernardo Mendoza, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office in Northern Mindanao, said the bombing appeared to be the handiwork of the breakaway group of the Cotabato-based Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.

Ten people were killed when a bomb exploded aboard a bus operated by the same company in Mindanao in 2010, which was blamed on an extortion scheme also linked to Muslim extremists.

Activists: Syrian Rocket Kills 3-Man Crew From Opposition TV
[Ynet] Syrian activists say a government rocket attack in the country's south has killed three staffers working for an opposition-linked TV station.

Activist Ahmad al-Masalmeh says the three were killed on Monday when the rocket fired by government forces hit their car in the southern province of Daraa.

He said Tuesday they were driving out of the contested village of Sheikh Maskeen where they had been covering festivities between government troops and opposition fighters.
Rockets can't avoid non-combatants once they've been shot off.

Are TV crew really non-combatants?

#3  Not according to Anjam Chodery or ISJV.
ISJV stated that anyone recording without a license and/or broadcasting without regional censor's approval is basically a spy and subject to death. At the least it undermines their own media propaganda message, underscoring how important media is to the military operations (not giving away positions of hostages and VIPS), propaganda recruiting and beg letters.

By their own admissions, media is combatant, so.

Lebanon Formally Arrests Detained Wife Of IS Chief
[IsraelTimes] Lebanese judicial officials said Tuesday that authorities have issued a formal arrest warrant for a wife of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group leader and referred the detained woman to military prosecutors.

The officials said Saja al-Dulaimi is being held at the Defense Ministry on suspicion of ?terrorism crimes,? and that all military staff dealing with her will be women.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Last week, Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk said that DNA tests have confirmed that a child captured along with al-Dulaimi late last month is the daughter of IS leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
. Iraqi officials have disputed that.

He added that al-Dulaimi was married to al-Baghdadi six years ago for a period of three months.

Lebanese authorities say they have also locked away

the wife and two children of another Sunni bad boy commander in Syria, Abu Ali al-Shishani.

The officials said the woman had entered Leb illegally, and authorities were studying whether to deport her to Syria or give her refugee status in Leb.

Al-Shishani, who has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, had threatened to ?retaliate? against families of Lebanese soldiers over the arrest.
