Whatever the 'neighborhood' was, it was meager, although sufficient, for the locals.

Egyptian police officer kidnapped in Sinai
[Ynet]. Gunmen kidnapped an Egyptian police officer on Sunday in the Sinai Peninsula, home to Islamist Lions of Islam seeking to topple the country's government, security sources and the state news agency said.
... and if you can't believe the state news agency who can you believe?
The policeman was traveling in a bus from the north Sinai city of Rafah to Al-Arish when the gunnies stopped the vehicle and took him away.

"This seems like a terrorist operation, not a criminal one, but we are not sure if it is Ansar (Bayt al-Maqdis) yet," a security official told Rooters.

Two Female Suicide Bombers Kill Four in NE Nigeria
[AnNahar]. Four people were killed in the northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
n city of Potiskum on Sunday, when two female jacket wallahs, one of them aged about 15, blew themselves up in a crowded market.

The blasts at the Kasuwar Jagwal mobile phone market in the commercial capital of Yobe State came just a day after a young girl thought to be aged only 10 killed 19 in Maiduguri, in neighboring Borno State.

"We evacuated six bodies including those of the two female suicide bombers to the hospital. Twenty-one people were maimed in the attacks.

A security source involved in the rescue operation told Agence La Belle France-Presse of Sunday's bombings: "One of the bombers looked 23 and the other 15.

"The first bomber -- the 23 year-old -- detonated her explosives just outside the entrance of the market, where volunteers were sweeping people going inside the market with metal detectors.

"The second bomber was terrified by the kaboom and she tried to dash across the road but she also went kaboom!."

Both the security official and a nurse at the Potiskum General Hospital said six people were confirmed dead and 21 were maimed.

Witness Ibrahim Dambam said the second blast went off as people fled the first.

Sunday is Potiskum's market day and attracts traders and shoppers from all over Yobe State and beyond.

Panicked shoppers fled and traders abandoned their stalls at both the mobile phone market and the city's main market, which is just next door.

- More female suicide bombers -

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest attacks but suspicion is likely to fall on Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, which have increasingly used female suicide bombers since last June.

Some security analysts believe that older women may willingly become human bombs as they share the Islamists' radical ideology or are out to avenge the death of loved ones at the hands of the military.

But the young ages of some of the bombers -- such as the girl in Maiduguri -- and the actions of the 15-year-old in Potiskum suggest that coercion is being used.

A civilian vigilante who witnessed the Maiduguri bombing said of the young bomber: "I doubt if she actually knew what was strapped to her body."

Another eye-witness said it appeared that the bomb was remote-controlled, which chimes with testimony from other attacks across the wider north of Nigeria.

This weekend's attacks are the latest in a spike in violence in northeast Nigeria, as elections for a new president and parliament approach next month.

Chinese police shoot dead six in restive Xinjiang
(Reuters) - A group of "mobsters" on Monday tried to set off an explosive device in a business district in China's troubled western region of Xinjiang, prompting police to shoot six of them dead, the local government said.

Hundreds of people have been killed in resource-rich Xinjiang, strategically located on the borders of central Asia, in violence in the past two years between the Muslim Uighur people who call the region home and ethnic majority Han Chinese.
Months ago I posted key statistics highly relative to this issue, i.e., the # of Moslem Uighur people vs. the # of non-Muslim Han people in the PRC. This ratio is grotesquely imbalanced. At the moment I feel too lazy to go back & recover those stats. One might guess news reporters would consider this population ratio info a key part of their story, and one would be consistently WRONG. The Chinese have a long history of massive suffering wrought by restive minorities & they are even less likely to put up with separatist crap than they were 2000 years ago.
Police in Shule county, south of the old Silk Road city of Kashgar, had acted on a tip-off about "a suspicious person carrying an explosive device", the Xinjiang government said on its official news website.

An axe-wielding individual tried to attack police officers and set off an explosive device, prompting the officers to shoot him, the government said.

The report added that police trying to dispose of an explosive device were attacked by five "thugs" who sought to detonate it, but did not make clear if this was a separate incident.

Xinjiang is crucial to China's growing energy needs, but analysts say the bulk of the proceeds from sales of its resources has gone to majority Han Chinese, stoking resentment among Uighurs.
Boo-hoo
Well no: that's exactly the sort of problem that leads to separatist movements.

Belgian Paper that Ran Charlie Cartoons Evacuated after Threat
[AnNahar]. The offices of a Belgian newspaper that republished cartoons from the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
were evacuated on Sunday after receiving an anonymous bomb threat, its staff said.

The evacuation of Le Soir, a French-language daily, came as thousands of people marched through Brussels in solidarity with La Belle France following Islamist attacks on Charlie Hebdo and other sites.

"An anonymous caller made threats against the editorial side of the paper, after which it was decided to evacuate the building," Maroun Labaki, in charge of the paper's foreign pages, told the Belga news agency.

The caller told journalists the bomb was "going to go off in your newsroom," Le Soir journalist Martine Dubuisson tweeted.

Police closed off the road around the paper's offices.

Le Soir was one of many European papers that reprinted cartoons from Charlie Hebdo including some mocking the prophet Mohammed.

A German tabloid that reprinted them was Molotov cocktailed on Sunday.

Austrian police detain 2 teenage girls looking to join IS
[WLOS] Austrian law enforcement officials say two teenage girls have been detained on suspicion of seeking to travel to Syria as potential wives for murderous Moslems fighting there.
"We're gonna run off to Syria and prostitute ourselves to guys with turbans because the most important part of us is between our legs!"
Marcus Neher of the Salzburg public prosecutor's office says they were detained in Salzburg and Upper Austria province on Saturday. He says they were "offering themselves as spouses for IS fighters."

Neher declined to give further details Sunday. The Austria Press Agency says the Salzburg suspect was 16 and originally came from Chechnya, while the other girl was 17 and born in Bosnia.

APA says the two were detained after investigations that began last month when the 16-year old was turned back to Austria by Romanian authorities while en route to Syria. She is suspected of recruiting potential IS wives, including the 17-year old.

There were no indications, however, that the man identified as Nils D. had concrete plans for an attack and there was also no connection to the Jan. 7-9 Islamist holy warrior attacks in Gay Paree in which 17 people were killed, she said.

Summit on fight against violent extremism
PARIS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A summit on fight against "violent extremism" will be held in Washington DC, after deadly terrorist attacks happened in Paris, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said here on Sunday.

The security summit will be held in Washington DC on Feb. 18, said Holder, who participated in Sunday's republican march on behalf of U.S. President Barack Obama.

"We will bring together all of our allies to discuss ways in which we can counteract this violent extremism that exists around the world," Holder said.
What if they decide not to come? You didn't attend the rally...
Holder is in Paris to attend a meeting, organised by French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, during which 11 European interior ministers met to discuss measures to deepen cooperation to prevent future attacks.

"We all agreed to implement thorough checks on certain passengers," declared Cazeneuve after the meeting, adding there was "an urgent and crucial" need to establish a system to collect information of passengers given to airline companies in order to fight against terrorism.

He also called on Internet companies to "identify and remove rapidly contents inciting to hatred and terror".

A total of 17 people died during three attacks in Paris this week. France's vigipirate plan is maintained at its highest level in Paris region since Wednesday.
Interesting background story, from Politico:
In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris last week, the White House has scheduled an anti-extremism conference that was originally set for last October but was postponed without explanation. In a statement issued as many world leaders gathered in the French capital Sunday to express solidarity with France and to vow renewed efforts to fight violent Islamic radicalism, the White House announced that its summit on the issue of homegrown terrorism will take place next month.

"On February 18, 2015, the White House will host a Summit on Countering Violent Extremism to highlight domestic and international efforts to prevent violent extremists and their supporters from radicalizing, recruiting, or inspiring individuals or groups in the United States and abroad to commit acts of violence, efforts made even more imperative in light of recent, tragic attacks in Ottawa, Sydney, and Paris," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement.

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson first announced the summit in September, as concern was growing about the threat posed by the Islamic State movement and by that group's recruitment of fighters in the West. Johnson said the high-level meeting would take place the following month. However, it did not. In the lead-up to the midterm elections, White House spokesmen repeatedly refused to discuss the reason for the delay or even to confirm on the record that it had been postponed.

Earnest said Sunday that the conference would address efforts being taken in the U.S., as well as promoting cooperation with similar work abroad.

"Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) efforts rely heavily on well-informed and resilient local communities. Boston, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis-St. Paul have taken the lead in building pilot frameworks integrating a range of social service providers, including education administrators, mental health professionals, and religious leaders, with law enforcement agencies to address violent extremism as part of the broader mandate of community safety and crime prevention," he said.

"At the same time, our partners around the world are actively implementing programs to prevent violent extremism and foreign terrorist fighter recruitment. The summit will include representatives from a number of partner nations, focusing on the themes of community engagement, religious leader engagement, and the role of the private sector and tech community," the White House spokesman added.

Former Pakistani Taliban Militants Join IS, Video Shows
[AnNahar]. An online video purportedly shows dozens of former murderous Moslems of the Pak Taliban pledging allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. jihadist group and beheading a man they identified as a Pak soldier.

The video is bound to raise alarm bells over whether IS is tapping support within Pakistain and Afghanistan, a region awash with dozens of krazed killer groups.

Released on Twitter and other jihadi websites on Saturday, it shows influential former Pak Taliban front man Shahidullah Shahid and other murderous Moslems passing through a rugged mountainous area on horseback, waving IS flags.

Shahid already pledged allegiance to IS last October and was later sacked by the Pak Taliban.

"As you know, most of the attendees have pledged allegiance to the Caliphate before, and now we present a collective pledge of allegiance," Shahid told the krazed killers.

Shahid announced that commanders of ten krazed killer groups had chosen Hafiz Muhammad Saeed
...who would be wearing a canvas jacket with very long sleeves anyplace but Pakistain...
Khan from Pakistain's Orakzai tribal district as the new IS head for Afghanistan and Pakistain.

Saeed Khan was then seen taking a pledge of allegiance to IS leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
.

The video also shows murderous Moslems beheading a man in military uniform who they claimed was a Pakistain soldier.

It was not clear where and when the video had been filmed nor could it be independently verified.

Leaflets calling for support for IS have been seen in parts of northwest Pakistain, and at least five Pak Taliban capos and three lesser cadres from the Afghan Taliban have pledged their backing.

Pro-IS slogans have appeared on walls in several cities in both countries and in Kabul University, where a number of students were jugged
You have the right to remain silent...
.

Pakistain has strengthened its own offensive against the Taliban since their attack on a military-run school on December 16 killed 150 people, 134 of them children.

IS militants' surprise blitz kills 24 Kurd peshmergas
[ARABNEWS] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Death Eaters have killed at least 24 members of the Kurdish security forces in a surprise attack in northern Iraq, Kurdish officials said, in one of the deadliest single battles for the Kurds since last summer.

Three Kurdish officers reported continued festivities with Islamic State on Sunday, one day after the deaths, near Gwer, a town some 40 km southwest of the autonomous Kurdish regions capital Irbil.

Kurdish-controlled Gwer is likely to be a launch-pad for any future attempt by Iraqi and Kurdish forces to retake djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the biggest city in northern Iraq which Islamic State seized last June.

Islamic State Death Eaters crossed the river Zab in small boats on Friday night and entered Gwer, but were driven back by Kurdish peshmerga forces, the officers said.

Weve been engaged in fighting with them for the past two days, said one senior Kurdish officer on the Gwer frontline as the sound of gunfire rattled in the background.

The officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said around 60 Death Eaters in total had been killed and that by intercepting the frequency they used to communicate via walkie talkie and listening in, it appeared many more were maimed.

Both he and another officer blamed the Iraqi army for allowing the Death Eaters to reach Gwer. They accused Iraqi soldiers of abandoning a forward position when they came under attack, leaving the town exposed.

The peshmerga launched a ground offensive to drive IS Death Eaters out of the Gwer area in late December, retaking several villages with the help of coalition Arclight airstrikes.

Islamic State said on Friday it had launched a counter-attack against the peshmerga with a range of weapons including TOW missiles and rockets, killing dozens, including a senior officer.

More than 750 peshmerga have been killed in combat since Islamic State overran their defenses in northern Iraq last summer, prompting the first Arclight airstrikes by the United States.

Islamic State Group Battle in Iraq Kills 30 Kurds

group fighters attempting to retake a town in northern Iraq held by Kurdish peshmerga forces have killed at least 30 Kurds, an Iraqi military front man said Sunday.

The fighting began Saturday as the murderous Moslems approached the town of Gwer, just outside of the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, which the Islamic State group controls, said Halgurd Hekmat, a front man for Iraqi Kurdish forces in Irbil. Hekmat said he had no information about casualties suffered by the Islamic State group.

Backed by U.S.-led Arclight airstrikes, Kurdish forces retook Gwer in August after the Islamic State group's offensive saw it seize a wide swath of Iraq. Kurdish fighters from Iraq also have deployed in small numbers to help Syrian Kurds battle the group's fighters in the Syrian border town of Kobani.

Gwer sits near Irbil, the Kurdish regional capital. Retaking it would allow Islamic State group fighters a new base to potentially launch assaults targeting the city.

Earlier this month, peshmerga fighters also retook small villages around the Death Eater-held town of Sinjar, opening a corridor to help hundreds of Yazidi families atop nearby Mount Sinjar.

The Islamic State group, which has declared a self-styled caliphate, holds about a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria.

On Saturday, the U.S. military said in a statement it carried out 12 strikes on the group in Syria and three strikes in Iraq. Eleven of the coalition Arclight airstrikes in Syria targeted Islamic State group positions around the border town of Kobani near Turkey.
Ynet approaches events from a different direction:

Lions of Islam have killed at least 24 members of the Kurdish security forces in a surprise attack in northern Iraq, Kurdish officials said, in one of the deadliest single battles for the Kurds since last summer.

Three Kurdish officers reported continued festivities with Islamic State on Sunday, one day after the deaths, near Gwer, a town some 40km (25 miles) southwest of the autonomous Kurdish region's capital Arbil.

Kurdish-controlled Gwer is likely to be a launch-pad for any future attempt by Iraqi and Kurdish forces to retake djinn-infested Mosul

, the biggest city in northern Iraq which Islamic State seized last June.

Islamic State bandidos snuffies crossed the river Zab in small boats on Friday night and entered Gwer, but were driven back by Kurdish peshmerga forces, the officers said.
