It was the second in the capital in as many days, after an kaboom maimed a police officer late Thursday outside the Al-Qubba presidential palace.

A civilian was also maimed, state news agency MENA said quoting the health ministry.

Young Egyptian woman shot dead in Alexandria
[Iran Press TV] A young woman has been shot and killed during an anti-government protest in Egypt's second city of Alexandria.

According to an Egyptian security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the 18-year-old female protester was killed and her mother suffered wounds during the demonstration after Friday Prayers in the Mediterranean city.

Egyptian soldiers targeted the victim and her mother with birdshot, the official said, adding that 30 others were detained during the protest.

On Thursday, scuffles broke out between Egyptian security forces and a group of demonstrators at Talaat Harb Square, which is located near the iconic Liberation Square, in the capital, Cairo.

Also on Wednesday, dozens of supporters of the Moslem Brüderbund staged a protest against the government of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, days before the anniversary of the country's 2011 revolution that brought an end to long-time dictator, Hosni Mubarak

's rule.

The protesters marched toward downtown Liberation Square, hollered poorly rhymed slogans against the government, and called for an end to the "military rule."

Security forces responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets to break up the crowd of protesters, of whom more than a dozen were tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!

Moslem Brüderbund supporters have vowed to continue weekly protests in the buildup to the fourth anniversary of the revolution.

In an election after Mubarak's ouster, the Moslem Brüderbund-backed Mohammed Morsi was elected president. Morsi was later ousted in a military coup led by former military ruler and current President el-Sisi in July 2013.

Report: Arrests in China's Xinjiang Nearly Doubled in 2014
[AnNahar] Arrests nearly doubled last year in China's violence-torn, mainly Moslem Xinjiang region, state-run media reported Friday, adding that a crackdown has been extended to the end of this year.

Prosecutors in the far-western area, home to China's 10-million-strong Turkic-speaking and mostly Moslem Uighurs, approved the arrest of 27,164 criminal suspects in 2014, up more than 95 percent on the previous year, the China Daily newspaper said.

"We've shortened the time between approving arrests and prosecution in major terrorist-related cases so the suspects can be tried as soon as possible to show the region's determination to fight terrorism," Xinjiang's chief prosecutor Nixiang Yibulayin was quoted as telling the region's legislature on Thursday.

Violence linked to Xinjiang has intensified over the past year, with at least 200 people killed in a series of festivities and increasingly sophisticated attacks in the resource-rich region and beyond it.

Beijing, which blames Xinjiang-related violence on "religious Death Eaters," "separatists" and "terrorists," has responded by launching a severe crackdown in recent months, with around 50 executions and death sentences publicly announced since June.

The China Daily said the campaign -- initiated in May after an attack in the regional capital Urumqi left 39 people dead and 94 injured and originally intended to last a year -- had been extended for "at least" six more months.

Rights groups argue that harsh police treatment of the Uighur minority, as well as government campaigns against religious practices such as the wearing of veils, have led to violence.

(IS) group killed seven people Friday, including two journalists, in the Muqdadiyah area north of Baghdad, their employers and officials said.

Ali al-Ansari and another unnamed journalist from al-Ghadeer satellite television were among the dead, according to local manager Karim Fadhel.

Mustafa Hamid and Qusay Sahib from Iraqiya state television

were maimed, said the head of its Diyala provincial office, Uday Abdelkarim.

Accounts differed on the incident, with some sources saying shellfire hit Muqdadiyah itself, while others reported a bombing and festivities north of the town.

Five snuffies were also killed, and more than two dozen people maimed, security and medical officials said.

Iraq , long one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, became more so after IS launched a sweeping offensive that overran large parts of the country last summer. The jihadist group beheaded journalists on tape and also issued threats against those reporting in areas it controls.

According to media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders, four journalists were killed in Iraq last year.

Zamboanga car bomb kills one, injures 48
One person was killed and 48 others wounded yesterday as a parked car exploded in the southern Philippines, which local authorities blamed the blast on Abu Sayyaf militants.

Witnesses reported that a parked car went up in flames and was blasted to bits in a powerful mid-afternoon explosion that shattered glass panels in a commercial section on the outskirts of Zamboanga City.

Senior Superintendent Angelito Casimiro, the city police chief, said no group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast and the lone fatality was not immediately identified.

Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco alleged the blast was tied to a plan by the Abu Sayyaf to help 57 comrades break out from the city jail. She said, "This is an SOS call for the 57 inmates to be removed and transferred for the safety and protection of the city."

Zamboanga City's jail warden, Julius Arro, said that prison authorities foiled an attempt to slip at least one gun and 100 bullets to Abu Sayyaf detainees on Monday. No arrests were made, he added.

Four Abu Sayyaf camps captured, six militants killed
Philippine soldiers captured four Abu Sayyaf camps in their ongoing operations on Basilan in Mindanao.

Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Harold Cabunoc said that elite military troops involved in the campaign killed six militants and injured others. He said a soldier on an armored personnel carrier was injured when an improvised bomb went off.

Cabunoc said the four camps taken were located in remote villages in the town of Sumisip. He said, "Our troops are deliberate and careful in hunting down the Abu Sayyaf remnants because there are improvised explosive devices along the escape route."

Iranian General Killed By Unlimited Minutes Cell Plan and Israeli Missiles
Stolen from AOSHQ
An Iranian general killed in an alleged Israeli air strike last Sunday in Syria may have died because he did not turn off his cellphone.

The Lebanese newspaper Al-Joumhouria reported on Saturday that a Hezbollah investigation into the strike found that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Mohammed Allahdadi kept his cellphone on in a sensitive area targeted by Israeli intelligence.
"Can you hear me now?"
According to the report, Allahdadi was in the Quneitra area on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights on Sunday with Hezbollah personnel at outposts that the Syrians and the Iranian built in order to counter Syrian rebels along with Syrian army forces. A few days before Allahdadi's visit a joint "operations room" was established with Hezbollah.

Allahdadi reportedly was killed along with his personal assistant, his driver and a more junior Iranian officer.

Eleven people total were killed in the airborne attack, including Jihad Mughniyeh the son of the late Hezbollah military leader and Imad Mughniyeh Mohammed Issa, the head of Hezbollah's operation in war-torn Syria and Iraq. Hezbollah, the Shiite militant group which is backed by Iran and fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006, said six of its members died in the strike.

Lebanese army regains control of Hamra hill after heavy clashes
[Iran Press TV] The Lebanese military has regained full control of the Hamra hill after heavy fighting with Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
snuffies on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek in northeastern Leb.

This came after Lebanese troops expelled hundreds of the Takfiri snuffies who had infiltrated into the troubled region close to the Syrian border on Friday morning.

Security sources say the Lebanese soldiers also fully control an advanced surveillance military post located in the area of the festivities.

Earlier in the day, the Takfiri snuffies launched a massive attack on army positions in the region. The army brought in reinforcements to deal with the worst attack of its kind since August in the area.

A Lebanese military statement said on Friday that the violent festivities between the Lebanese army and Takfiri snuffies have claimed the lives of several Lebanese soldiers.

"There are deaders and maimed men among the ranks of the Lebanese army, and we have killed and injured several of the attackers," the statement read.

It added that the Lebanese army would intensify its measures on the Syrian border to counter all the terrorist attacks and infiltration attempts.

Ras Baalbek is located near the town of Arsal, where Takfiris killed and kidnapped some two dozen Lebanese soldiers in August 2014.

The Lebanese army has been targeted by repeated terror attacks by Takfiri faceless myrmidons in the vicinity of Arsal since the outbreak of the foreign-backed war in neighboring Syria in early 2011.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
the ISIL Takfiri faceless myrmidons and the al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
Front terror elements still hold 25 Lebanese soldiers and coppers captive on the outskirts of Arsal, over five months after kidnapping them during a five-day battle in the border town.

ISIL militants kill dozens of Syrian civilians in Hasakah
[Iran Press TV] Members of the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
ISIL holy warrior group have executed dozens of civilians in Syria's northeastern province of Hasakah, as they continue committing crimes against humanity on a large scale in the crisis-stricken Arab country.

Local sources, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said the ISIL snuffies overran the villages of Tal Maghas as well as Um Raqabah on Thursday, and fatally shot dozens of people. The Takfiris later destroyed the victims' houses, Syria's official news agency, SANA reported on Friday.

The development comes after ISIL Lions of Islam killed a man and blew up his house in Ashra village of Hasakah Province on the charge of fighting the holy warrior group, and repelling an ISIL attack on the village.

ISIL Takfiris executed eleven civilians and mutilated their bodies in Syria's eastern province of Deir ez-Zor on January 15.

ISIL had killed three civilians in the city of Mayadin, situated some 500 kilometers (310 miles) northeast of Damascus a day earlier. The ISIL Lions of Islam mutilated two of the bodies and decapitated the third, before hanging them at the al-Bal'oum roundabout at the entrance of city.

Syrian airstrike kills at least 35 near Damascus
[BUSINESSWEEK] A Syrian government Arclight airstrike hit an opposition-held suburb of the capital shortly after Friday prayers, killing at least 35 people, scattering bodies and rubble in the streets and setting at least one building on fire, activists said.

An activist based near the capital who goes by the name of Abu Yazan said the air raid struck near a popular market in the town of Hamouriyeh just east of Damascus.

The Local Coordination Committees, an activist collective, said the strike hit people leaving a mosque, killing 35 people. The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the corpse count at 42, including six children. It said the number of dead is expected to rise because many people were seriously maimed.

Pentagon Says U.S. has Killed Thousands of IS Jihadists
[AnNahar] The United States believes it has killed about 6,000 jihadists in its air strikes against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, defense officials said Thursday.

Pentagon chief Chuck Hagel, however, warned against resorting to "body counts" to measure progress in the war.

The estimate of how many IS fighters had been taken out by U.S.-led air raids was first cited by Washington's ambassador to Iraq, Stuart Jones, in an interview aired Thursday by Al-Arabia television.

U.S. defense officials reluctantly confirmed the figure but insisted the military was not placing a priority on the measurement, which carried uncomfortable echoes from the Vietnam conflict -- when American commanders cited daily "body counts" to convey progress in the war.

There was no independent confirmation of the casualty estimate and it remains unclear how many civilians might have been inadvertently killed in the strikes.

But if accurate, it would suggest the coalition has inflicted astounding damage on the IS group since the air strikes began in Iraq on August 8 and in Syria on September 23.

The casualty toll would mean bombing raids wiped out roughly 20-30 percent of the IS group's fighting force, which is estimated at between 20,000 to 31,500 fighters, according to the Central Intelligence Agency's estimates released last year.

Hagel told a news conference he could not confirm the 6,000 corpse count but said "thousands" of IS fighters had been killed in U.S.-led bombing raids.

"We do know that thousands of ISIL fighters have been killed, and we do know that some of ISIL's leadership have been killed," he said.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
Hagel, a Vietnam veteran who still carries shrapnel fragments in his chest from his war wounds, said the number of IS holy warriors killed was not a useful gauge for assessing the effect of the air campaign.

"I was in a war where there was a lot of body counts every day. And we lost that war," he said.

Other indicators showed that the IS was on the defensive and under pressure, Hagel said, including signs the jihadists were having trouble recruiting, keeping supply routes open and maintaining communications on the battlefield.

"These are the metrics you look at as to how much progress you're making in a war," he added.

#1  Pentagon chief Chuck Hagel, however, warned against resorting to "body counts" to measure progress in the war.

He should rightly know. Likely one of the reasons he's leaving his post.

#2  Though with due concern for "minimizing civilian casualties", one presumes?

#3  g(r)om, they may be counting bunnies and kitties to make the number look higher.

When the count for HR purposes those will be ignored.

#4  It's bunch of BS. In wars of attrition you need some measure of progress. The one measure least subject to distortion is body counts. Wars of maneuver measure progress via the amount territory taken. In a war of attrition, if you're not stacking up enemy dead, you need to step it up. That's why the military does body counts, even if it doesn't release them to the press.

#5  Good point Ulu, but I think we must be careful to differentiate between the destruction of combat units and the selective media reporting of 'eaches.'

#6  For IS its war was lost in Iraq once it began to gather its troops en masse.

#7  Don't forget the 'institutional' inter-service game of my boys killed more of the bad guys than your boys and thus I should get more funding. The game of 'mine is bigger than yours' has been going on forever.

#8  Numma 7 obviously referring to what I call 'wars within wars.' A dynamic for which I have absolute and unequivocal loathing. Very accurate catch P2k.

#9  Are we stacking them up faster than they could stack
themselves?

Screw it. Get out and give the jooooos the Pershing Data.

#10  Nice to see high body counts are back en vogue.

If these are the numbers el prez is getting, no wonder he thinks highly of the situation.
