US drone strike kills Westgate attack planner, officials say
[IsraelTimes] Al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
man allegedly responsible for plotting death of 67 in Kenya mall believed dead

A US drone strike in Somalia on Thursday is believed to have killed a senior member of the al-Shabaab Lion of Islam group who allegedly helped plan the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, officials said.

Adan Garar and two others are suspected to have been killed after their car was targeted near the town of Bardhere, the Kenyan and US officials said.

The senior Kenyan official, who insisted on anonymity because he wasn't authorized to give the information to the media, says Garar is also suspected of planning failed attacks on Kenya's coast and in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, last year. The US official also insisted on anonymity.

Anti-terror police foiled a planned attack in the coastal city of Mombasa after they intercepted an exploding car in March 2014, according to Kenyan authorities. According to police, al-Shabaab bully boyz had planned simultaneous attacks on the international airport in Mombasa, the ferry crossing and a supermarket. The car laden with explosives was to be detonated on a ferry.

Al-Shabaab, an Islamic Lion of Islam group, has vowed to inflict violent attacks on Kenya and Uganda because the two countries have contributed troops to the African Union

force supporting the government in Somalia.

Sixty-seven people were killed in the Westgate attack, which was carried out by four gunnies from al-Shabaab.
An Nahar adds:
The U.S. military has carried out an air strike against a senior al-Shabaab

bully boy in Somalia and is still reviewing the results of the operation, the Pentagon said Friday.

The operation, which did not involve U.S. troops on the ground, took place on Thursday on a road south of Mogadishu and focused on "a high-value target," front man Colonel Steven Warren
...a proud member of the Army of Steve...
told news hounds.

"This operation was conducted against the al-Shabaab network," Warren said. "We are currently assessing the results of this operation and will provide additional information as and when appropriate."

An armed drone carried out the strike, a U.S. defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

The Pentagon declined to comment on reports, citing Kenyan officials, that the strike targeted a Shabaab figure who orchestrated the 2013 attack on the Westgate mall in Nairobi, which left 67 people dead.
Make of that what you will, dear Reader.
Update at 11:15 ET from Garowe Online:
U.S. officials said privately that the target of the drone strike was Adan Garar, a planner of the 2013 attack on the Westgate mall in Nairobi. One official said the U.S. is 90% certain that Mr. Garar was killed in the attack but said the information hasn't yet been confirmed.

A spokesman for Somalia’s national security and intelligence ministry, Mohamed Yusuf, said Mr. Garaar had just taken over intelligence oversight for al-Shabaab from Abdishakur Tahlil, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike in December.
Time to put out the 'help wanted' ad again on CraigsList...
The U.S. has targeted several al-Shabaab leaders who were suspected to be involved in the attack, including a September 2014 drone strike that killed the al-Shabaab commander known as Ahmed Abdi Godane.

Col. Warren said the latest strike occurred on a road west of Dinsoor and south of Mogadishu. Kenyan officials have said the strike occurred near the town of Bardhere, according to press reports. Bardhere is east of Dinsoor.
Fog of war?
U.S. officials said the operation was carried out by a drone armed with Hellfire missiles.

#2  What's the rule on body parts these days?

Is it a head two arms and a leg = a body
Or is it two legs a torso and a arm?

I know back in the day, a bunch of guys from G-2 could come in after a battle and start piling up body parts and come up with a body count. I never understood how anyone could do that and eat AND I never understood what the rules were, given the random nature of the disassembled parts.

Report: Attack wounded three army members in Egypt's Sinai
[Ynet] An attack on a checkpoint with rocket-propelled grenades maimed one army officer and two other soldiers in the Egyptian city of al-Arish on Thursday, security sources said, the latest in a string of attacks in the Sinai peninsula. The attack came at the eve of an investment conference in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, 340 km (210 miles) south of al-Arish, that Egypt hopes will project an image of stability and attract billions of dollars.

Gunmen attacked the army checkpoint at al-Mahajer area south of Arish late on Thursday evening, before fleeing the scene, the sources said. The maimed were moved to a military hospital in the city.

Suspect in Deadly Mali Nightclub Attack Killed
[AnNahar] Malian special forces killed a suspect Friday in last week's deadly jihadist attack on a nightclub in the capital, officials said, dramatically igniting a probe which had shown little progress.

Bamako has been on high alert since a heavily armed gunman burst into La Terrasse, a popular venue among expatriates, on Saturday and killed five people, including a French national, a Belgian and three locals.

"During an operation launched on Friday, one of the perpetrators of the terrorist crime last Saturday was killed. He did not want to surrender," a senior special forces commander told AFP.

Three Killed in Shebab Attack in Northern Kenya
[AnNahar] Three people were killed and eight more maimed on Friday in the latest cross-border raid by Somalia's Shabaab forces of Evil in northeastern Kenya, an official said.

Grenades and gunfire were aimed at a convoy carrying Mandera county governor Ali Roba, leaving two police and a civilian dead, although Roba escaped unharmed, Mandera East deputy county commissioner Elvis Korir said.

"The governor's vehicle had passed a few minutes before the attack on the security officers escorting him," said Korir.

The ambush was claimed by Somalia's Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab rebels.

"A Shabaab commando unit attacked a Kenyan convoy traveling from Mandera to Nairobi," said Shabaab military front man Abdulaziz Abu Musab. He said the forces of Evil destroyed two vehicles, hijacked another and captured weapons.

"The idea was to kill the governor, and all the people with him," said the front man. "We are at war with Kenya and such attacks must continue."

Roba's convoy was previously ambushed in October 2014.

Mandera, in Kenya's far northeast, borders Somalia and is plagued by insecurity. The area has been the scene of a string of recent Shabaab attacks.

In November, Shabaab gunnies held up a bus outside Mandera town on the same stretch of road as Friday's ambush. The forces of Evil separated passengers according to religion and executed 28 non-Moslems.

On Friday, thousands of protesters erupted into the streets of al-Daih, al-Musalla, Bilad al-Qadeem, and Diraz to denounce the occupation of Bahraini land by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The angry demonstrators rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against the Saudi monarchy and demanded the immediate withdrawal of all Saudi Arabian and UAE forces from the country.

Several people were maimed after the Al Khalifa forces fired teargas and birdshots to disperse protesters in several villages near Manama.

group.

In raids in the vicinity of Madrid and Barcelona, agents took into custody suspects who "called for the commission of terrorist acts in Spain inspired by techniques used in other countries," an interior ministry statement said.

The suspects also allegedly attempted to "localize and select bully boyz inclined to adopt the jihadist ideology" and put them in touch with IS members abroad.

Spanish authorities said the suspects were in contact with an IS member "who was supervising their activities from Syria and Iraq."

The alleged jihadists, six men and two women, are suspected of targeting immigrants and Spanish people with Moroccan origins.

A Spanish judge on Thursday remanded two other suspected jihadists in jug on terrorism charges following their arrest in Spain's north African territory of Ceuta.

The two suspects, Spaniards "of Moroccan origin," were accused of belonging to a group "prepared" to launch possible attacks in Europe, authorities said.

About 60 people charged in Islamist terrorist cases were being held in Spain at the start of 2015, a law enforcement source said.

Spanish authorities say about 100 people from Spain are suspected of having joined jihadist fighters in Iraq and Syria, and fear they may return to launch attacks.

#1  Well, of course! With that black background and white printing? Might work with khaki or black. But certainly not for everyday wear - it simply screams "jihadi." Much more tasteful had they gone with an indigo blue, or a subtle floral-print tie.

Bosnia Arrests Five for Planning 'Terrorist Act' in Scandinavia
[AnNahar] Four Bosnians and a Swede of Arab origin were incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Bosnia after being found with an bomb to be used for "a terrorist act" in a Scandinavian country, police said Friday.

The operation, coded "Benelux," was carried out by Bosnian, Swedish and Dutch police, Bosnian police said in a statement.

"These persons are suspected to have produced an bomb in Bosnia with the intention of delivering it in a Scandinavian country," it said said. "The device was supposed to be used for a terrorist act."

Last month, a gunman of Paleostinian origin killed two people in Copenhagen.

The authorities refused to give further details, including the final destination or specify if the suspects were linked to local Islamist movements.

In a separate statement, a prosecutor said the Swedish citizen was "of Arab origin."

Three suspects were arrested as they were trying to leave Bosnia in a car where the device was found, police said, adding that another two were arrested in the capital Sarajevo.

Forty percent of Bosnia's 3.8 million inhabitants are Moslem.

According to Bosnian intelligence estimates, some 150 citizens are currently fighting along with jihadist groups in Iraq and Syria and some 20 have been killed so far. Some 50 other jihadists returned to Bosnia.

Friends of Paris Jihadist Attacker Charged with Terrorist Conspiracy
[AnNahar] Two friends of Amedy Coulibaly, one of the jihadists behind January's attacks in Gay Paree, were charged on Friday with involvement in a terrorist conspiracy, the prosecutor said.

One of the two men, identified as "Amar R.", 33, was frequently in contact with Coulibaly, who killed a policewoman in Gay Paree on January 8 and attacked a Jewish supermarket the following day, killing four.

The prosecutor said Amar R. and Coulibaly exchanged more than 600 text messages over four months and met at least 10 times, "in particular on January 5 and 6."

Already in detention over an unrelated case, Amar R. is the boyfriend of a policewoman who was also tossed in the calaboose
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
on Monday but released two days later.

Amar R. knew Coulibaly during an earlier stint in prison, where he also came into contact with a man identified as Michael A., who was already charged on January 20 with "terrorist conspiracy".

The other man charged on Friday was identified as Said M., 25, whose DNA was found on the strap of a taser in the Jewish supermarket, the prosecutor said.

He was in regular contact with Amar R. and both their mobile phone SIM cards were destroyed on January 9, on the day of the supermarket attack.

The official charge from anti-terrorist judges was "conspiring with a terrorist group with a view to committing crimes against people", the prosecutor said.

They were later due before a magistrate who would decide if they would be placed in detention until their next appearance in court.

Coulibaly's attack on the supermarket came two days after two other jihadists killed 12 people at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
magazine.
The Times of Israel adds:
Said M. and Amar R. contacted each other more than 1,200 times between February 2014 and January 2015 and saw each other regularly, the prosecutor said. The statement said the two men destroyed their telephone microchips on January 9, the day Coulibaly and brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi were killed in separate standoffs with French security forces.

Two other people taken into custody at the same time, including a policewoman who was in a relationship with one of the suspects, were released, the prosecutor said. They had also been suspected of links with Coulibaly.

Europe 1 radio reported that the kosher grocery was expected to reopen Sunday for the first time since the attacks. The printing office where the Kouachi brothers holed up for hours before coming out shooting at police remains closed.

In a posthumous video, Coulibaly claimed allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group, but it is not known who edited and released the footage. His widow left La Belle France days before the attacks and is believed to be in Syria.

The Kouachis claimed the attacks for al-Qaeda's branch in Yemen, where one of the brothers is believed to have traveled for paramilitary training with the terror group. But no one with any ties to the brothers has been charged. Investigators are trying to unravel how the three men orchestrated the attacks -- and whether they had help -- in the months since Coulibaly's release from prison in March 2014 and the end of French surveillance of the brothers, sometime in July 2014.

(IS) group, a minister said, the latest case of Indonesians heading to battlegrounds in the Middle East.

The 11 children, four women and one man from the world's most populous Moslem-majority country were detained in the Turkish border town of Gaziantep. Officials did not say when they were arrested.

"We are still investigating... but it is clear that they wanted to join (IS) to have a better life in accordance with Islamic sharia laws," Security Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno told news hounds late Thursday.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that a team was being dispatched to Turkey to work with authorities after the arrests.

Officials had previously revealed that a different group of 16 Indonesians went missing last month after joining a tour group to Turkey, and were also believed to be attempting to reach Syria.

Fears are also growing in Indonesia, which has long struggled with Islamic militancy -- the country's counter-terror chief saying that more than 500 Indonesians are believed to have gone to fight with IS.

Jakarta has already banned support for IS jihadists, although experts have called on authorities to take further steps to stop the flow of fighters.

Indonesia has waged a crackdown on terror groups over the past decade following attacks on Western targets, including the 2002 Bali bombings, that killed 202 people -- a campaign that has been credited with weakening key networks.

Iraqi offensive on Tikrit appears to stall
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The offensive to retake Tikrit appeared to stall on Friday, two days after Iraqi security forces and mainly Shi'ite militia pushed into Saddam Hussein's home city in their biggest offensive yet against the murderous Moslems.

A source in the Salahuddin Operations Command said Iraqi forces would not move forward until reinforcements reached Tikrit, of which the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) still holds around half.

Using guerrilla warfare tactics, the gunnies have turned the city into a labyrinth of home-made bombs and booby-trapped buildings, and are using snipers to halt their progress.

Hadi al-Amiri, the head of the Shi'ite paramilitary Badr Organization and now one of the most powerful men in Iraq said the outcome of the battle for Tikrit was in no doubt, but Iraqi forces needed time.

"We are not in a hurry, but we have a plan and we are following it," Amiri told Iraqi state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
from the Tikrit frontline. "Even if the battle drags on for two, three or four days that is okay. We will celebrate the liberation of Tikrit from the enemy."

A victory in Tikrit would give Iraqi forces momentum for the next stage of the campaign to retake djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the largest city under control of Islamic State, which now rules a self-proclaimed caliphate in Sunni regions in Syria and Iraq.

But the involvement of Iran, which backs some of the Shi'ite militia at the forefront of the campaign and is also playing a direct role, is a source of unease for some Sunnis in Iraq and across the wider region.

The ISIS fighters overran Tikrit last June during a lightning offensive that was halted just outside Baghdad. They have since used the complex of palaces built in Tikrit under Saddam, the executed former president, as their headquarters.

#3  According to Ynet this morning, they're waiting for the experts, whatever that means:

The source [in the local military command center], speaking by phone from near Tikrit, said the Iraqi forces and Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias known as Hashid Shaabi (Popular Mobilisation) were waiting for reinforcements from "well-trained forces". He did not give a timeline for the arrival of the reinforcements.

"We do not need a large number, just one or two thousand. We need professional personnel and soldiers," he said, explaining they were needed to engage in street-by-street battles with Islamic State fighters who have booby trapped many buildings in the city and laid improvised explosive devices and roadside bombs.

IDF wounds Palestinian hurling Molotov cocktail in West Bank
[Ynet] Security forces open fire after Paleostinian rioters hurl stones at them near Ramallah; 17-year-old maimed in ankle.

A Paleostinian in the al-Jalazun refugee camp near Ramallah was maimed on Friday by IDF fire after he threw a Molotov cocktail towards the security forces. Some 200 Paleostinians protesting in the area hurled stones at the soldiers at the entrance of the camp, prompting them to fire live rounds at them.

The 17-year-old boy was shot through the ankle, and was immediately evacuated to hospital as festivities continued.

The festivities came amid tensions as Israel prepares for a general election Tuesday. Paleostinians have watched the upcoming snap vote with interest, keen for a change from rightwing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party.

Likud was lagging in the polls on Friday behind the Zionist Union - a joint list headed by Labor's Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni of the centrist HaTnuah, who was Israel's chief negotiator with the Paleostinians during talks that broke down nearly a year ago
If I understand Israel's parliamentary system correctly, what matters is not which party has the most votes, but which coalition of parties together have the most votes.

a resident in the city's east for allegedly passing messages to Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,. Interrogation of the suspect, Rami Alami, a resident of At-Tur in his thirties, uncovered the fact that he would visit prisoners from the group in Israeli jails, write down messages from them, and pass them on to Hamas using his office computer. The Jerusalem Magistrate Court extended his remand until Monday, when the prosecution is expected to submit an indictment.

Hamas claims it nabbed official who betrayed top commander
[IsraelTimes] Gazoo-based terror organization says that information leaked to Israel led to Arclight airstrike on Muhammad Deif last summer
Traitors everywhere in the Hamas hierarchy. Makes one wonder how much is externalizing the internal, and how much is that Gazans just aren't into Hamas anymore....
A senior Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, official has been tossed in the slammer
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in Gazoo for allegedly disclosing information to Israel on the whereabouts of Muhammad Deif, the elusive commander of the terror group's military wing, during the war in Gazoo last summer.

Israeli intelligence sources believe that Deif was likely killed in an August 19, 2014, Arclight airstrike in Gazoo City during Operation Protective Edge, a claim that Hamas has repeatedly denied, although Gazoo-based officials have confirmed the deaths of Deif's wife and two of his children in the strike.

A bigwig in the terror group who was one of Deif's close associates, Muhammad Rashid Shitawi, was apprehended by Hamas on Sunday and questioned in connection with the allegations, Channel 2 reported.

According to Hamas, Shitawi received a phone call from Deif on August 19, at the height of the war, who asked him to bring his family to Shitawi's house in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gazoo city.

After Shitawi, whom Hamas alleged was an agent of Israel's Shin Bet security service, acquiesced to Deif's request, he immediately contacted his handlers and informed them of Deif's precise location.

That enabled Israel to launch the Arclight airstrike that killed Deif's family members and possibly Deif himself.

Shitwai was also being investigating for a bungled weapons sale to the terror group Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
, Hamas said in a statement.

Deif has been wanted by Israel since the early 1990s for allegedly orchestrating terror attacks that killed hundreds of Israelis. Israeli officials believe he was coordinating Hamas's movements during the summer's conflict as head of its military wing.

Three other senior members of the military wing's command hierarchy were killed in an Israeli strike a day after the attack on Deif's hideout.

Deif survived at least four previous liquidation attempts since 2002, after being appointed military commander following the death of his predecessor, Salah Shehade. Prior to last summer's strike, he was believed to be paralyzed from previous attempts on his life.

In August, Hamas front man Abu Obeida vehemently denied that Deif was killed in the strike, noting that Israel was "unable to get to our commander Deif," who will soon "lead the army that will enter to liberate the holy al-Aqsa mosque" in Jerusalem.

More than 100 Hamas members arrested by PA
[Ynet] In a massive sweep, Paleostinian Authority forces round up dozens of suspects in punitive measure against Gazook terror group, after it placed in durance vile
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
a senior Fatah official.

The Paleostinian Authority's security forces arrested over 100 Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, members in the past two weeks, a senior Paleostinian defense official told Ynet.

The operations reached a climax on Sunday night when -- in an unusual step -- the forces arrested 40 Hamas members, including released detainees, academics, and students in a coordinated effort conducted in multiple cities across the West Bank.

The extensive arrests are being carried out at a time even as Israel continued to hold the PA's tax funds -- for the third consecutive month. The funding freeze is a punitive measure first initiated after the Paleostinian government signed the Rome Statute and applied for membership in the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
at The Hague.

The tax funds are used by the Paleostinian Authority to pay salaries for its employees, both civil and military.

The Paleostinian official said the wave of arrests -- 6 to 7 Hamas members per night -- was undertaken in a bid to clampdown on the Gazoo-based terror group after warning lights began flashing in Ramallah. He added that the step was also a punitive measure against Hamas after it arrested a senior Fatah member in Gazoo.

The families of the suspects claimed the arrests were unusually aggressive and included extensive searches of the homes. They threatened to hold protests this morning in front of the security forces' headquarters in the West Bank.

Hamas, for its part, has been trying to steamroll the Paleostinian Authority with a wave of attack ads across the terror group's media outlets. Hamas blamed the PA for cooperating with Israel while suggesting its forces were involved in the arrests.

"We lay the full burden of responsibility for the wave of arrests and the continuing restrictions on Hamas members on the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
and the Paleostinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, said the group's foreign spokesperson, Hossam Badran, on Monday morning.

"This wave of arrests proves that the security coordination (with Israel) continues at the highest level and there is no weight behind the PLO's Central Council decision to end the cooperation," he added.

The Hamas statement comes in the wake of recent PLO deliberations, which ended with an agreement to halt the security coordination with Israel. The decision, however, is not enforceable and such a measure could only be implemented by Abbas.
