Out with the Old, in with the New: Uzbek Militants Pledge Allegiance To Daesh
[Tolo News] A group of Uzbek gunnies claiming to be the members of Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) Death Eater group have allegedly sworn allegiance to Daesh holy warriors in Afghanistan.

They have released a video purportedly showing the beheading of an Afghan soldier in retaliation to detention of a number of female IMU supporters by the Afghan cops in northern Faryab.

Sadullah Urgeni, shown in the video as the commander of Uzbek gunnies in Afghanistan, have called His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...

The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
who the IMU gunnies believe can no longer be the leader according to Sharia as he has not been seen for about 13 years.

Urgeni has reportedly said in the video that in retaliation to arrest of female IMU supporters, they have taken 30 Afghan soldiers captive, which they warned to behead if the Afghan government didn't meet their demand.

The Afghan government officials, however, are yet to comment in this regard.

The IMU gunnies are said to be operating in the some unsafe areas in northern Afghanistan.

Shabaab militants claim responsibility for Garissa University attack
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
holy warriors have grabbed credit for the attack on Garissa University College that left 15 people dead.

At least 65 others were maimed in the Thursday pre-dawn attack.

A front man for Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab, told AFP the group was behind the early morning assault on the university in Garissa and had taken non-Moslems hostage.

"When our men arrived, they released the Moslems. We are holding others hostage," said Al-Shabaab front man Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, without giving numbers.

He said those seized were Christians and added that "our people are still there, they are fighting and their mission is to kill those who are against the Shabaab."

"Kenya is at war with Somalia," Rage said,
It really wasn't, but this might change things...
referring to the thousands of Kenyan troops in Somalia as part of an African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
military mission.

Gunfire could still be heard sporadically six hours after the attack began, as Kenya's Interior ministry said the "attackers have been cornered in one hostel".

The ministry also said "one suspected terrorist" had been tossed in the calaboose
Please don't kill me!
while attempting "to flee scene".

At least 15 people have been killed, according to a police source and media reports, while Kenya's official National Disaster Operation Centre said a further 65 had been injured, many suffering from gunshot wounds.

The Kenya Red Thingy, which is leading the medical response to the attack, said there were "an unknown number of student hostages" and that "50 students have been safely freed".

Rage did not give details of casualties but said "there are very many".

Government names Mohamed Kuno as Garissa University College attack mastermind
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A Kenyan and a former teacher in Garissa has been named as the criminal mastermind of the terrorist attack at Garissa University College.

A Sh20 million bounty has been placed on the runaway, Mohammed Kuno, who has been on the run since December last year.

Kuno was then identified as the Al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
commander who oversaw the killings of 58 Kenyans in Mandera.

The corpse count in the latest attack is 15.

A security brief seen by the Nation says Kuno is a former teacher and Principal at Madarasa Najah in Garissa and has three aliases; Sheikh Mahamad, Dulyadin and Gamadheere.

He joined forces of Evil in Somalia at the time of the Islamic Courts Union, which later metamorphosed into Al-Shabaab.

He uses his family members in carrying out terrorist activities in northern Kenya.

Kuno, the brief added, is Al-Shabaab's leader for Juba region in Somalia, and currently in charge of external operations against Kenya.

Juba region shares a vast border with Kenya, and touches Mandera, Garissa, Wajir and Lamu counties.

Shaboobs attack Kenyan university campus, 16 killed
GARISSA, Kenya -- Al-Shabab gunmen have stormed a university campus in northeastern Kenya, taking students and teachers hostage in an assault that left 16 people dead according to witnesses, Garowe Online reports. The audacious and heavily armed raid is the latest attack targeting Kenya which saw series of attacks by the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabab fighters operating from hideouts in neighboring Somalia.

A spokesman for Al Shabaab said they carried out an attack on University campus in the sleepy town which is situated 100 miles away from the porous border with which Somalia shares Kenya.

Witnesses told Garowe Online that the attackers shot their way into the campus, killing two guards at the entrane before taking students and teachers hostage.

Kenyan Defence Force (KDF) aided by drones and heavily armed wagons deployed in a bid to clear the campus of Al Shabaab militants.

Holed up in the ground storey, sporadic shootings could be heard as medics are attending to 67 victims injured in the siege, GO correspondent has confirmed.

Students in dormitories are said to have been quizzed on Islamic creed, with those identified as christians being shot to death right away.

Kenya Garissa students 'taken hostage' by al-Shabab
The situation continues to evolve. Check back during the day for live updates, courtesy of the BBC and Rantburg readers. Steve White posted an article from the local press here.
[BBC] Gunmen from the militant Islamist group al-Shabab have killed at least 15 people and taken students hostage at a university in north-eastern Kenya.

Reports say 65 others were wounded when gunmen stormed the campus in Garissa. Troops are engaging the gunmen.

More than 500 students were still unaccounted for, a minister said. The number of hostages is unclear.

Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, said it was holding Christians hostage and freeing Muslims.

Hostages from the two groups had been separated, and 15 of the Muslims had already been released, a spokesman for al-Shabab told the BBC.

Garissa College University student Collins Wetangula said when the gunmen entered his hostel he could hear them opening doors and asking if the people who had hidden inside were Muslims or Christians, Associated Press news agency reports.

"If you were a Christian you were shot on the spot. With each blast of the gun I thought I was going to die," he is quoted as saying.

Mr Wetangula said some security officers then entered through a window and took him and some other students to safety.
Map and labelled Google Earth photo at link.
About five masked gunmen are said to have stormed the university.

Kenya's Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery told journalists that one of the militants had been killed as he tried to flee.

Out of 815 students, 535 had not yet been accounted for, he said.

A policeman at the scene told Reuters news agency that some students had been taken hostage.

"We can't tell how many but they are many since the college was in session," the unnamed policeman is quoted as saying.

The Kenyan Red Cross said about 50 students had been "safely freed", but an unknown number were still being held, AFP news agency reports.

Security forces were now trying to flush out the gunmen, a police statement posted on Twitter said.

It urged people to stay away from the area. The statement did not confirm that hostages had been taken.

I can hear gunfire from inside the campus. Ambulances are rushing in and out with the wounded.

One teacher told me some students managed to run away from the gunfire, and came to her house early in the morning to seek shelter.

But a huge crowd has gathered outside the house, mostly of people who are worried that friends and relatives may be still trapped inside.

Some of them are trying to enter the campus but the security forces are holding them back. Troops have also surrounded the main hospital, restricting public access to it as medical staff battle to cope with the wounded.

Most shops in Garissa are shut, and people are staying at home.

The town's hospital has been sealed off.

Who are al-Shabab?
Al-Shabab cash lures Kenyans

The gunmen reportedly ordered students to lie down on the floor, but some of them escaped and are at a military facility.

"It was horrible, there was shooting everywhere," student Augustine Alanga told the BBC's Newsday programme.

He said it was "pathetic" that the university was only guarded by two police officers in such a volatile area.

The university opened in 2011 and is the only place of higher education in the region.
.
The BBC's Anne Soy in Nairobi says that because of its proximity to Somalia, Garissa is an easy target for al-Shabab militants and there have been several attacks in the past.

She says that the UK and Australia issued alerts this week warning of potential terror attacks in parts of the country, including Garissa.

There has also been a specific alert for universities in the country.
Garissa, 150km (90 miles) from the border with Somalia, has a large population of Kenyan Somalis.

Al-Shabab has carried out a number of attacks in Kenya since 2011, when Kenyan troops were sent to Somalia to help fight the militant group there.

The deadliest attack targeted the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi in September 2013, when 67 people were killed.

Al-Shabab is fighting to create an Islamic state in Somalia and is banned as a terrorist group by both the US and the UK.

The men from Brigade 415 (Shuhada Al-Nadurah) which had been temprarily based between Sidra and Brega took part in a homecoming ceremony In Tobruk's Martyrs' Square on Monday at which local civil society activist Kamal Awad congratulated them for protecting the oil terminals and fields.

The force was prepared to protect every Libyan town and city, he declared, if asked to do so by the House of Representatives.

Operation Sunrise forces pulled back from Sidra to near Sirte a week ago, following a deal with the Petroleum Facilities Guards. They first attacked the oil terminal there in December. In the intervening three months, before the festivities reached stalemate, well over a hundred fighters from both sides were reported killed and one and a half million barrels of oil lost as a result of oil tanks being set ablaze.

Morocco breaks up IS cell
[ARABNEWS] Moroccan authorities said Wednesday they dismantled a cell in the city of Fez that was recruiting fighters for the Islamic State

group in Iraq and Syria.

The Interior Ministry said the head of the cell maintained strong ties with IS leadership and sent Moroccans to training camps in the two countries, where they received intensive training in weapons handling.

"The members of this recruitment cell had received significant foreign funding for the necessary expenses to allow for travel and movement of these fighters," the ministry statement said, without elaborating.

The arrests were made by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations, inaugurated this year as part of the kingdom's beefed up war against terrorism.

They came after jihadists claiming to belong to IS killed 21 foreign tourists and a policeman in an attack last month on Tunisia's Bardo National Museum.
An Nahar adds:
Morocco, which is on guard against such attacks, prides itself on being a bastion against Islamist extremism with its anti-jihadist unit and training of imams to preach tolerance.

and 276 plots foiled, the ministry said.

According to the British-based International Center for the Study of Radicalization, about 2,000 Moroccans are estimated to be fighting with IS in Iraq and Syria.

Troops Repel Boko Haram Raid on Niger

fighters when they repelled an attack by the Islamist forces of Evil in southeastern Niger, Chad's army said on Tuesday.

The fighting took place in Bosso, a Niger village near the border with Nigeria.

The government forces did not suffer any fatalities, Chad's army said in a statement.

Casualty figures are often hard to independently verify. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
a humanitarian source confirmed the losses saying 40 to 47 Boko Haram gunnies had been killed in Bosso and its surroundings.

The rebels were pushed back to Nigeria, and at least four Boko Haram vehicles -- one of them armored -- were also destroyed, a Chad military source said.

A Niger member of parliament said they had fled to Malam Fatori, a Nigerian border town near Bosso that Chad and Niger say they want to take back from Boko Haram.

The Nigerian army, however, says that Malam Fatori is under its control.

The private radio station Anfani, based in the city of Diffa in southeastern Niger also close to the border with Nigeria, reported "heavy aerial bombing" on Monday, mainly around Bosso and Malam Fatori.

Another Chad and Niger army operation on Sunday in Talagam -- a small town situated between Damasak, a town that was recaptured from the Islamic murderous Moslems, and Malam Fatori -- led to the deaths of 54 Boko Haram fighters, Chad's military said.

Two soldiers from the coalition were also killed and 15 were maimed, the military added.

A humanitarian organization source reported the deaths of three Chadian soldiers after the fighting on Sunday.

Thousands of soldiers from Niger and Chad have been stationed for nearly three months in southeastern Niger. They launched an offensive in early March across the border into northeastern Nigeria, parts of which are a stronghold of the Islamic murderous Moslems.

"The situation is totally under control" in Niger, said former foreign minister Mohammed Bazoum, who is close to the country's president Mahamadou Issoufou.

"The risk of attacks taking place are very low due to the elimination of all potential players," said Bazoum.

The jihadists made sweeping territorial gains in Nigeria's northeast in 2014 but appear to have been weakened by a sustained regional fight-back since February.

More than 13,000 people have been killed and some 1.5 million made homeless since Boko Haram launched its bloody insurgency in 2009.

members were said to have fled after suffering losses elsewhere, Niger's military said Wednesday.

The situation in the town of Malam Fatori near the Niger border had been unclear, with the Nigerian army previously claiming it was under its control.

There was no immediate comment from Nigeria, which has just emerged from a presidential election won by opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari.

A front man for Niger's army said Malam Fatori was retaken by regional forces on Tuesday.

Neighboring Chad and Niger have been pursuing Boko Haram Death Eaters in the area as part of a regional offensive against the Islamists.

"Malam Fatori fell last night," Moustapha Ledru told AFP.

He said the Death Eaters fled without much of a fight, after isolated festivities that left around 10 suspected Islamists dead.

Regional forces have claimed a string of successes in recent weeks against Boko Haram, forcing the Death Eaters out of towns they had occupied in northeastern Nigeria.

had faced intense criticism during the election campaign over his failure to tackle the insurgency, which has left more than 13,000 people dead since 2009.

Nigeria's vote had been due to be held on February 14 but security concerns forced the country's electoral commission to postpone it to March 28.

Buhari, an ex-military ruler, decisively won the election, which ushered in the first democratic transition in Africa's most populous nation.

Chad: Hundreds of Boko Haram militants killed in clash

[Ynet] Chad's army said its forces had killed hundreds of Boko Haram militants and lost nine of its own troops in clashes in northern Nigeria on Wednesday.

Army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermandoa said the fighting happened as Chadian forces carried out mopping up operations around Malam Fatori, a town near Nigeria's border with Niger that was recently retaken from the militants. Bermandoa said 16 Chadian troops had also been wounded.

...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
cannot be ruled out, Brig. Gen. Ahmad Al-Assiri, consultant at minister of defense's office, said on Tuesday.

The Saudi-led coalition has strengthened military positions in all sectors along the Yemen border, he said at the Riyadh air base.

Al-Assiri said a limited ground offensive might be carried out if the Death Eaters in Yemen persist with playing the game of hide and seek.

"The Saudi-led air campaign may be accompanied by an operation on the ground," warned Al-Assiri. He, however, stressed that "one should not expect a sudden ground attack".

Al-Assiri said patrolling at the border was intensified even as the coalition forces intensified the air campaign against the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. rebels on the sixth day on Tuesday.

He admitted that there was exchange of rocket and artillery fire in some pockets of Yemen.

The official reiterated that maximum precaution is being taken to avoid collateral damage during Operation Decisive Storm.

Referring to the resumption of passenger flights to airports in the southern region of the Kingdom, he said all flights were operating to the airports.

"Flights to Najran airport have also resumed after a brief disruption," he said.

Spelling out the details of Operation Decisive Storm, Al-Assiri said: "We had also managed to ensure maritime blockade with an aim to cut the supply lines of the Houthi Death Eaters and to secure the maritime routes."

He said the targets were mainly in the north of Yemen.

"The Houthis are moving from one place to another in search of safe havens. We will make sure that there will be no safe place the Death Eaters to hide on the land of Yemen," Al-Assiri said.

Al-Assiri said the Arclight airstrikes pounded Houthis for the sixth day Tuesday, destroying missiles and weapons depots controlled by the rebels.

The coalition forces mainly targeted areas around Aden and Al-Hisama districts of Saada province and near the town of Haradh in neighboring Haja province, he said.

The primary goal is to weaken the Iran-allied Houthis by destroying their defense capabilities, he said.

Al-Assiri, however, admitted that there was exchange of rocket and artillery fire in some pockets of that country Tuesday.

Police detain 22 people in raid against DHKP-C in southern Turkey
[Hurriyet Daily News] Turkish police have detained 22 people in the southern province of Antalya in an operation against the outlawed far-left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), a day after two gunnies with suspected links to the group took a prosecutor hostage in Istanbul.

Antalya police detained 22 people with a warrant early on April 1. Anti-terror teams reportedly had information there might be similar attacks in the city and commenced the operation. The police are still searching for one suspect.

Lawyer Hakan Evcin, however, denounced the claims of a possible attack in Antalya and said the individuals detained were preparing to give a press statement at 19:00 p.m.

Two gunnies with alleged links to the DHKP/C took Mehmet Selim Kiraz, the prosecutor in the controversial case into the killing of Gezi victim Berkin Elvan, hostage on March 31. Kiraz departed this vale of tears in hospital after the six-hour hostage drama, during which security forces killed the two captors.

The perpetrators' demands included a live confession by the coppers suspected of killing Elvan, the prosecution of the officers in a "people's court," and the acquittal of all those being tried for participation in solidarity rallies for Elvan, as well as other requests.

An official said that an bomb was recovered from the possession of the suspects during the raid by counter-terrorism department of police. The arrested persons were identified as Mohammad Hanif and Mohammad Ayaz, the residents of Akhunabad in Peshawar city, he added.

The official claimed that both the arrested persons were associated with a proscribed organization. The explosive they possessed, he said, were highly lethal and its use was common in Iraq and Afghanistan against individuals and vehicles.

The officials of Badbher cop shoppe, when contacted, avoided sharing details in this regard.

SURRENDER: Police said that six Lions of Islam carrying money over their heads surrendered to the law enforcers and their names were deleted from the list of terrorists.

According to a police front man, police handed over the amount of head money to the provincial government for the proclaimed offenders, who surrendered voluntarily to the counter-terrorism department of police.
That's pretty low. They turned themselves in. Shouldn't they collect the head money?
The IGP, through a letter, asked the home and tribal affairs department to delete the names of the surrendered persons from the list of terrorists. Police have published the names of proclaimed offenders, wanted in terrorism cases, and offered them all to surrender voluntarily.

Taking advantage of offer, three persons hailing from different areas surrendered. "They are under investigations," police said. A fair chance will be given to them to prove their innocence.

Police said that a total of 601 suspects were arrested and huge caches of arms and ammunitions were recovered during the ongoing search and strike operation in the province.

The front man said that during the search operation, 40 weapons of different kinds were seized. Besides, 321 houses and 226 hotels were checked and cases were registered against the violators of law. Police also arrested 72 Afghan nationals for not having valid documents.

Tikrit victory boosts Iraq fight to defeat IS
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] Iraq vowed Wednesday to reclaim the entire country from jihadists after retaking the city of Tikrit in its biggest success yet in the fight against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

Speaking from a newly-recaptured area of central Tikrit after a month-long operation, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the government was "determined to liberate every inch of Iraqi land".

But Tikrit is far from secure, with various officials saying that IS snuffies were still present in the city, while bomb-rigged houses and buildings also pose a major threat.

Interior Minister Mohammed al-Ghaban told journalists in Tikrit that there were "a few pockets (of IS fighters) remaining in some of the neighbourhoods."

And a commander from the Ketaeb Imam Ali militia, one of the paramilitary forces fighting alongside police and soldiers, reported festivities with IS in the city's north in the morning.

They "tried to advance on the university", Rasul al-Abadi told AFP, adding that there were "no more than 30" IS fighters left in the city's large Qadisiya district.

Ghaban said IS fighters were trying to cross the Tigris river, east of the city, to escape.

Supporting that assertion, a paramilitary commander said the jihadists launched an attack Wednesday from a mountain hideout northeast of Tikrit in an attempt to open a safe passage for fleeing krazed killers.

There has been concern that Iraq does not have enough specialised ordnance clearance teams to handle the large quantity of traps left by IS fighters.

- Explosions, looting -
Ghaban said that security forces had so far found 185 rigged houses and around 900 other bombs.

Exploding bombs periodically sent clouds of dust rising over Tikrit on Wednesday, apparently detonated intentionally by forces working to clear the city.

Columns of black smoke also rose from various burning houses and businesses.

Some of the dozens of palaces in former dictator Saddam Hussein's massive complex on the eastern side of the city were smashed by shelling or air strikes, but other areas of Tikrit were comparatively lightly damaged.

Militiamen have quickly set about spray painting the names of their groups on walls and windows, and also stole items including clothes, shampoo and shaving cream from shops in central Tikrit.

There is still evidence of IS's almost 10-month presence in the city, including the group's black flag painted on walls and writing identifying some buildings as "properties" of the jihadists' self-declared state.

On Tuesday, Abadi claimed the city was retaken but the US-led coalition supporting Baghdad from the air said IS still held parts of Tikrit.

Defence Minister Khaled al-Obeidi vowed Wednesday to press on with offensive operations.

"We are coming, Anbar. We are coming, Nineveh," he said in a recorded address, referring to the last two provinces still largely controled by IS.

The loss of Tikrit further isolates djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the capital of Nineveh and the main IS hub in Iraq, with Baghdad's forces now poised to push north while Kurdish forces close in from the three other directions.

Zaid al-Ali, author of "The Struggle For Iraq's Future", said however that the fighting in Tikrit was made easier because the city was largely emptied of its population even before the operation began on March 2.

Iran militia top dog: Israel's destruction non-negotiable
[Jihad Watch] The commander of the Basij militia of Iran's Revolutionary Guards said that "erasing Israel off the map" is "nonnegotiable," according to an Israel Radio report Tuesday.

Militia chief Mohammad Reza Naqdi also threatened Saudi Arabia, saying that the offensive it is leading in Yemen "will have a fate like the fate of Saddam Hussein."

Naqdi's comments were made public as Iran and six world powers prepared Tuesday to issue a general statement agreeing to continue nuclear negotiations in a new phase aimed at reaching a comprehensive accord by the end of June.

In 2014, Naqdi said Iran was stepping up efforts to arm West Bank Palestinians for battle against Israel, adding the move would lead to Israel's annihilation, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

"Arming the West Bank has started and weapons will be supplied to the people of this region," Naqdi said.

"The Zionists should know that the next war won't be confined to the present borders and the Mujahedeen will push them back," he added. Naqdi claimed that much of Hamas's arsenal, training and technical knowhow in the summer conflict with Israel was supplied by Iran.

#3  AL-NUSRA REBELS SEIZE LAST SYRIA BORDER CROSSING INTO JORDAN

They've definitely seized it? Darn it, the latest I had was that Jordan closed the crossing because the Syrian side was under attack.

#6  But that's not the true voice of 'real' islam. Everybody knows that! All real Americans know that!

They're the only real Americans left - those that still love Champ.

#7  ...So, let me see if I have this straight:

"Death to America, death to Israel, we want nukes NOW!!!" = no problem.

OK, I think I got it.

#11  If the evil Jews control/own all the media how come this story isn't all over the news?

Shouldn't CNN be covering this like a Malaysian airliner going missing? Shouldn't this be on the front page of the WAPO and Slimes in bold letters?

Hope the Israelis are planning for the worst cause that's what they're going to get from our regime.

#12  Ever wonder if Jimmy Carter has any regrets about backstabbing the Shah?

#13  I'd say "no." Jimmy has a fetish for despots, as long as they're not tied to the U.S.

#14  Better days are indeed behind us. In the mid 60's, Mobile Training Teams (MTT's) from the 10th SF traveled to Iran to train the Iranian Special Forces, along with Kurdish tribesmen in the mountains of Iran. Don't know when they pulled out, but Carter didn't come along until 1977.

Islamic State Fighters Storm Besieged Palestinian Refugee Camp in Syria
[NEWS.VICE] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
fighters stormed the Yarmouk refugee camp in southern Damascus on Wednesday, continuing their push into regime-controlled parts of Syria and battling mostly local Paleostinian groups as they seized control of some sections of the besieged camp.

Before the conflict in Syria began, Yarmouk was home to 150,000 refugees, mostly third and fourth generation Paleostinians who fled or were forced out of their homeland in the 1940s when Israel was established. The camp became a battleground between Syrian rebel groups and regime forces after the civil war erupted, and its population has since plummeted to around 18,000. It has effectively been under siege since 2012, leaving the residents to starve to death as they were cut off from food, clean water, and other essentials.

The latest incursion, which took place as Syrian regime forces bombed the camp, was reported by both Paleostinian officials and Syrian activists, and confirmed to VICE News by a number of local sources.

Unconfirmed reports have suggested that al Nusra Front, al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, may have facilitated the bad boy offensive. Members of Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis, a Paleostinian group loosely and unofficially affiliated with Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, pushed back against their advance.

"Daesh have been clashing with Akhnaf since the morning; most people remain hiding in their homes," an activist in the camp told VICE News, using an acronym that spells out the Islamic State's full Arabic name. "The situation is already terrible but there has also been a huge amount of shelling, probably from the regime, that has targeted a hospital and other civilian areas."
Ynet adds:
According to the Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV, the IS gunnies fighters entered the camp from the nearby neighborhood of Hajar Aswad. That southern Damascus neighborhood is controlled by turbans.
So the threat to Assad was already there, just the next neighborhood over.
The Yarmouk Camp has changed hands several times over the past four years. It was under Assad's control, moved to the hands of moderate Sunni rebels (that don't belong to Islamist organizations) and, at a certain point, was also captured by the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
organization.
Ah. This is a repeated threat by various unfriendly parties, and is growing tiresome. I vote for rubblizing the thing, thus removing the threat altogether.
phil_b submitted the BBC article on this story, which has a nice little map. See here and scroll down. He commented:
The camp is only about 5kms from the centre of Damascus. Otherwise, the report is the usual hand wringing about the poor paleos.

#2  The rebels have made gains in the last week or 2. including around Homs. Reports say Assad didn't send re-inforcements, which means he is saving what reserves he has for a bigger battle.

Wouldn't surprise if they manage to cut the main north south highway, effectively isolating Damascus from the coast, which would leave Assad with a mini-lebanon around Latakia.

Aussie 'IS widow' advises potential jihadi brides
[RFE/RL] An Australian woman who has joined with IS is using social media to encourage other women who want to follow in her footsteps.

Umm Abdullatif, who has been identified as Zehra Dumann from Melbourne, told wannabe female IS recruits that the "lifestyle" for women in IS controlled lands is "amazing" and "something you need to see for yourself."

In another post she said the food in Syria is "yummy," but "the tap water makes you sick."

Women who asked Umm Abdullatif questions wanted to know whether Internet connections are good and whether "all the womanly supplies" are available ("yes, alhamdullilah [praise Allah]," she replied).

Other potential recruits were interested in marriage. One asked, "Can you look for a husband for me? Help me please."

"I am more than happy to, inshallah," Umm Abdullatif replied, asking the woman to contact her privately through a messenger service.

Umm Abdullatif discloses that women cannot fight. Nor does IS currently allow women to carry out suicide operations, although she wishes they could. Umm Abdullatif reflected, "The day will maybe come soon that we could."
The sooner, the better.

#1  Umm, you are an idiot. Yummy food, feminine supplies plentiful, you don't have to fight, but the water sucks? I'll repeat myself--You are a friggin idiot. Face reality. You were married 5 weeks and became a widow (On the other hand, there is some good in that.)

#2  One wonders if it is the actual 'widow' who is writing about how wonderful it is or ISIS using her Facebook account.
