4 Police, 2 Civilians Killed in Qarabagh Blast
[Tolo News] At least four coppers and two non-combatants were killed in a roadside kaboom in Qarabagh district of Kabul on Monday, local officials said.

The blast occurred in Sabz Sang area of Qarabagh after a police vehicle struck a roadside mine, District Governor, Abdul Sami Sharif said.

"The blast took place near a mosque while people were gathered for a funeral ceremony. The police vehicle was passing the area (when it hit the mine)," he said.

So far no group, including the Taliban, has grabbed credit for the blast.

This comes a day after TOLOnews issued its monthly security report which found there was an 88 percent increase in civilian casualties across the country during the month of March - as compared to last month's report.

In March, 44 mine kabooms and 57 armed attacks by holy warriors were recorded in the country, while 23 abductions and other incidents also occurred, according to the report.

Bodies of two kidnapped Shia Afghans recovered
[Iran Press TV] Afghan authorities have recovered in the southern province of Zabul the bodies of two Shia Moslems, whom suspected Talibs had kidnapped along with more than two dozen others in late February.

Provincial council chief, Ata Mohammad Haqbin, said the corpses were found in Kakar (also known as Khak-e Afghan) district of the province, located over 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of the capital, Kabul, on Monday.

Haqbin added that one of the victims had been murdered by his captors, while the other one was an old man who had apparently died of fatigue.

French Free Dutch Hostage in Mali Four Years after Kidnap
French forces continue to roam the Sahel committing necessary controlled violence as needed.
[AnNahar] French special forces on Monday rescued a Dutch train driver kidnapped nearly four years ago in Mali by Al-Qaeda's north Africa arm in an operation that killed several jihadists.

La Belle France's defense ministry said Sjaak Rijke, kidnapped in Timbuktu in northern Mali in November 2011, was freed during "military action carried out by the French army's special forces."

"This combat action has also led to the capture of several individuals," added the ministry, referring to the dawn raid against Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

It said Rijke was "safe and sound."

French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
also spoke of the operation, saying the freed hostage had been transported to a safe location and that a number of suspected jihadists had been killed. He said the French soldiers were not aware of the hostage's location before the raid against the Lion of Islams.

La Belle France announced last month that it would further boost its military presence in the Sahel to also support the fight against Nigeria's Boko Haram.
"Several hours ago, French special forces were able to carry out an attack against a terrorist group and were able not only to neutralize the group, but also obtain the freedom ... of a Dutch man who had been held hostage since November 2011," Hollande told journalists.

He said the assault occurred near Tessalit in Mali's far north, near the border with Algeria.

Asked whether the hostage was in good condition, Hollande said "as much as possible after four years of captivity."

"It was a surprise for us -- for our forces -- to be able to free this hostage because we did not have information" about his presence, he said, without providing further details.

Gunmen had stormed into Rijke's hotel capturing him as well as a South African and a Swede, both of whom are still being held. Rijke, who was 51 when he was kidnapped, and his wife were described in the Dutch media as seasoned travelers who were on a "dream trip" to cross the Sahara.

In November 2014, AQIM released a video of Rijke making a statement on the 1,000th day of his captivity. Also seen on the video was Frenchie Serge Lazarevic, who was later freed in a prisoner swap against four jihadists in Mali.

Mali's vast desert north is riven by ethnic rivalries and an Islamist insurgency.

Jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda controlled Mali's north for more than nine months in 2012 until they were routed by a French-led military intervention, but Lion of Islam fighters remain active throughout the restive northeast.

Mali is also struggling with ethnic Tuareg snuffies fighting the army over northern territory they claim as their homeland and call Azawad.

Hollande said "the battle against terrorism in Mali is not over. We still have 3,000 men in the region -- not only in Mali -- to carry out the battle against terrorism."

gunnies opened fire on villagers and torched a number of buildings in a new attack in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, witnesses said Monday.

Resident Ahmad Ali told AFP that roughly two dozen assailants, who were "obviously Boko Haram fighters" stormed the village of Kwajaffa at dusk on Sunday and ordered residents out of their homes.

Locals thought the Islamist turbans "were going to preach and leave", but in fact they "opened fire on the crowd", Ali said.

Ali said the corpse count likely passed two dozen but no other eye witnesses could be reached immediately to confirm the figures.

"They then went on setting fire to homes, burning half of the village before they left," he added.

Kwajaffa lies in the southern part of Borno state, one the regions hit hardest during Boko Haram's deadly six-year uprising.

Details of attacks often take time to emerge, given the poor communications infrastructure in the embattled region.

Babagana Mustapha said a relative who fled the attack in Kwajaffa arrived at his home in southern Borno's commercial hub of Biu, 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Kwajaffa, at 11:30 pm (1030 GMT) on Sunday.

This relative reported similar details concerning the attack, including a number of casualties, Mustapha told AFP.

Nigeria's military -- backed by forces from Chad, Niger and Cameroon

-- has claimed huge victories over Boko Haram in the northeast over the last two months, retaking a series of towns and villages previously under rebel control.

But experts have warned that hit-and-run attacks by the group could increase amid the added military pressure.

The Islamist Lions of Islam killed seven people going to a market in southern Chad on Friday, and then set improvised landmines on the road close to the Nigerian border.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
's perceived mishandling of the Islamist insurgency was seen as a main reason for his overwhelming defeat in the northeast in last month's general elections.

Nigeria's president-elect Muhammadu Buhari will not take charge of the fight against Boko Haram until late May, but he has vowed to be a more effective commander-in-chief than Jonathan, in part by ensuring that the military is properly funded and equipped.

Aside from the use of force, Buhari has pledged to use so-called "soft power" to stem the killing, including much-needed development programs targeted specifically at the impoverished region.

He said some of the victims had their throats slit, while others had succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds.

Improvised bombs were later discovered along the road between Tchoukou Telia and Ngouboua, which lies close to the border with Nigeria and has come under Boko Haram attacks in recent weeks.

The report comes as the leaders of Central and West African countries plan to hold a summit in an effort to come up with a common strategy to counter the threat posed by Boko Haram.

The group has kidnapped 318 political opponents and raided 26 homes and 33 NGOs, according to the Sanaa Rights Center.

A 4th Brooklyn man has been indicted on charges of conspiring to join and support the ISIS terror group

Dilkhayot Kasimov, 26, is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Brooklyn federal court on charges of collecting $1,600 from multiple individuals to help send one of two Brooklyn men to Syria to join the group.

Both were arrested earlier this year, along with a third who worked together with Kasimov. All four are Uzbekistani nationals. Kasimov's protege, Akhror Saidakhmetov, was caught in February at JFK International Airport just before boarding a flight to Turkey, where he expected to cross the border into Syria.

Kasimov allegedly encouraged others to participate in violent jihad through the use of electronic messages, according to prosecutors. He worked together with Abror Habibov, who owned cell phone kiosks, and who allegedly also helped in facilitating the travel of foreign fighters to Syria.

Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev had allegedly also planned to travel to Syria to fight with ISIS.

The three defendants picked up in February have already pleaded not guilty in March at a hearing in Brooklyn federal court to charges of conspiracy.

All four are being held at a detention center in New Jersey, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Authority.
Last month, Saidakhmetov, Habibov and Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev — all immigrants from the former Soviet republics of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan — pleaded not guilty in the same case. Prosecutors accused Juraboev of also trying to travel to Syria via Turkey to join the Islamic State.....CBSNews link here.

[DAWN] Suspected rebels shot and killed three unarmed coppers Monday after ambushing their vehicle in disputed Indian-held Kashmire, shortly after a separate incident left another officer critically injured, officials said.

The coppers were travelling to Amshipora village, 60 kilometres (37 miles) south of the main city of Srinagar, to probe a local land dispute when the ambush occurred.

The bully boys, dressed in army fatigues, first released unharmed two civilians who were travelling in the vehicle along with the driver before firing on the officers, inspector general of police Javid Gillani told AFP.

"They [coppers] were going for an investigation when their vehicle was ambushed. All the three were killed. They were unarmed," Gillani said.

Police and army have launched a hunt for the bully boys, whose attack came an hour after another police officer was shot and injured in a separate incident further north.

After boarding the bus travelling on a highway in Pattan, the suspected rebels noticed the officer, who was from a special counter-insurgency group of the state police force, was among those on board.

The rebels tried to hijack the bus before abandoning the move and shooting the officer, a police officer said on condition of anonymity.

"The Lions of Islam fled after shooting the police officer when the bus stopped in a traffic jam," the officer said.

Iraq PM says will cooperate with Kurds to liberate Nineveh
[Hurriyet Daily News] Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the Baghdad government would work with Kurdish authorities to liberate the northern province of Nineveh from Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Lion of Islams.

During his first visit to the Kurdistan region since becoming Prime Minister last year, Abadi said Baghdad and Erbil faced a common enemy and would improve ties to help confront the threat.

"Our visit to Erbil today is to coordinate and cooperate on a joint plan to liberate the people of Nineveh," Abadi said at a joint news conference with Kurdish President Massoud Barzani
... hereditary head of the Kurdish Democratic Party, maybe a little too close to the Medes and the Persians for most people's tastes...
on April 6.

Abadi declined to lay out a timetable for the plan to retake Nineveh, of which djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
is capital, in order not to lose the "element of surprise".

The trip comes less than a week after ISIL holy warriors were driven out of the city of Tikrit by Iraqi forces including Shi'ite militia, backed by coalition air strikes.

Asked about reported abuses by the Shi'ite militia, who are grouped together as Popular Mobilisation Committees or Hashid Shaabi, Abadi said it was not fair to level the accusation at the entire force.

"There's a small group that attempts to attach itself to the Hahsid Shaabi and attack civilians and their belongings and offend the Hahsid Shaabi," Abadi said. "Our measures are to arrest these people and present them to court and we have indeed incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!

Southeast Asia
Report blames Philippine military, MILF for Mamasapano battle
Both the Special Action Force (SAF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) breached their ceasefire when they engaged in a battle in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, on January 25. The IMT, an international group of Malaysian-led observers, made this allegation in a report submitted to the Philippine government.

The report said the SAF failed to coordinate with the Philippine military and other police units and ignored ceasefire mechanisms.

The objective of the operation was to arrest Malaysian terrorist bomb maker Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, and his Filipino associate, Abudl Basit Usman. The firefight ended with 44 police commandos, 17 militants, and four civilians killed. It also threatened the peace process with the MILF when legislators suspended work on the draft of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which would create region to replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The report also said that SAF members violated ceasefire terms when they gunned down two MILF militants on the morning of the operation. This led to the gun battle between the SAF and the MILF forces.

The report said that, in the first encounter, the Moro militants were responding to the police commandos' attack. At the same, it says the MILF violated ceasfire terms when it moved into local cornfields and attacked another SAF unit.

The report found no evidence that the MILF provided sanctuary to Marwan and Usman, however the IMT believes some MILF members knew where the two were hiding.

As for a viral video showing SAF commandos being executed, the report said there wasn't enough evidence that MILF militants did it. The IMT also says one SAF commando broke ceasefire terms when he killed four sleeping MILF militants during his escape.

OTOH, SAME = repor that the US FBI has final or conclusive DNA evidence that wanted notorious bomb-maker "Marwan" was indeed killed at Mamasapano, so in that respect Manila is hailing the raid as a success, albeit costly.

Malaysia Detains 17 Suspected in Terror Plots
[VOA News] Malaysian authorities have tossed in the calaboose
Please don't kill me!
17 people, including two who had recently returned from Syria, for allegedly plotting terror attacks in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Police Chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in a Twitter message Monday that the 17 were arrested Sunday. He gave no further information, saying a statement would be issued later.

The arrests come after the Home Ministry proposed two new anti-terror laws last week that will reintroduce indefinite detention without trial and allow the seizure of passports of anyone suspected of supporting terror acts.

Critics say the move is a revival of a controversial security law that was repealed in 2012, and warned the new law could be used to severely limit civil liberties.

Malaysian authorities have arrested scores of citizens since the start of last year for allegedly being supporters of the Islamic State

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
While Obama and Kerry work on their nuclear '€˜deal,' Iran ramps up financial support of Hamas
[Kanuk Free Press] While President Obama and his surrogates were busy working on their "historic" deal with Iran, the totally peaceful terrorist nation in question was busy with plans of its own.

Iran, as you're no doubt aware, has no interest in a nuclear weapon because having one would be "against their religion." Because of this, you should have no concerns about the United States lifting sanctions in exchange for...um...helping them get that bomb they don't want.

Unfortunately, there are a few things that aren't against their religion. Chief among these is "working to destroy Israel by funding terrorist organizations."

As the Telegraph reported this weekend, at the same time America's "leaders" were helping Iran achieve their nuclear dreams, Iran was busy helping Hamas rebuild their tunnels into Israel.

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) gunnies blew up an 80-year-old church in Syria's northeastern province of Hassaka on Easter Sunday, Syrian state news agency SANA said.

SANA, which did not report any casualties, said the forces of Evil had planted explosives inside the Church of the Virgin Mary in Tel Nasri, an Assyrian village in an area where Christian and Kurdish militia have been battling ISIL.

ISIL controls the village, the news agency said on April 6.

The Lion of Islam group, which controls swathes of Syria and Iraq, espouses a fiercely purist school of Sunni Islam, deeming many other Moslems to be heretics. Its fighters have destroyed Shi'ite and Sufi religious sites and also attacked churches.

Islamists Kidnap Then Free 300 Kurds in Syria
[AnNahar] Islamist fighters on Monday kidnapped some 300 Kurdish civilians at a checkpoint in northwestern Syria, holding them several hours before setting them free, Kurdish officials and a monitor said.

Newaf Khalil, a front man for the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), said the group were tossed into the calaboose by Jaysh al-Islam, a powerful Islamist group allied to al-Nusra

Khalil said the Kurds were released in exchange for three Islamist fighters who were tossed into the calaboose in Afrin by Kurdish forces. He gave no other details.

"A group of 300 people on five coaches and a mini-bus coming from Afrin were kidnapped at a checkpoint as they went to Aleppo to collect their salaries," Khalil had said after their abduction.

The release was also reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Britannia-based monitoring group also reported that eight people were killed Monday and 28 others maimed in shelling by the Islamic State

The shelling targeted the village of Salamiye, which has a majority Ismaili community, who belong to the Shiite branch of Islam, the Observatory said, adding that the Syrian army retaliated.

Syria Rebels Exchange Women, Children for Commander
In the Syrian war of all against all, the Kurds stand somehow apart.
[AnNahar] Islamist fighters in northern Syria released two dozen women and kiddies late on Sunday in exchange for a rebel commander held by pro-regime forces, a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the 10 children and 15 women from Shiite towns in Aleppo province had been held by Islamist faction Jaish al-Mujahideen.

In a deal mediated by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), the women and kiddies were released in exchange for Yusef Zawaa, a Jaish al-Mujahideen commander who was held by gangs loyal to Syria's embattled regime.

The Britannia-based Observatory said the women and kiddies were from Zahraa and Nubol, two Shiite towns that have been under rebel siege for more than 18 months.

"They were kidnapped more than a year when crossing checkpoints on their way from Nubol and Zahraa towards Damascus and Aleppo," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

Zawaa was captured when he strayed into the pro-government enclave by mistake, Abdel Rahman told Agene La Belle France Presse.

Elsewhere in the country, the Observatory said government air strikes had killed at least 17 people, including five children, in Idlib province in the northwest.

Five of the deaths were in Idlib city, which was captured from government forces on March 28 by a coalition of Islamist groups, including al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra

group (IS/ISIS).

The Turkish authorities didn't reveal the identities of the detainees.

Also, a testimony of a Turkish citizen in countryside of Ankara confirmed in front of the Turkish parliament that the detained people were aiming to enter the Syrian territory to join the radical group of IS, the Turkish news agency Cihan reported.

A patrol of the Turkish army stopped these people's car ــ based on intelligence informationــ near the village of Asagi Biler Bay of the city of Kilis on the Syrian border, carrying 20 people from different nationalities, who were on their way to cross the border into IS-held Syrian areas, according to a statement issued by the Turkish army leadership on Monday.

The Turkish army leadership announced that they arrested a German man on the Turkish-Syrian border in Gaziantep state on Sunday, who was trying to cross the border to join the IS group, and two other people were arrested near the town of Agca Kalla near the Syrian city of Tel Abyad while trying to cross the border.

The Army's leadership pointed out that these two young men were carrying weapons and military equipment.

"The Turkish people's concerns mounted recently about the 'brainwashing cases' taking place in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, aimed attending youngsters to join the IS' ranks," Turkish journalist Mehmet Ozbelek told ARA News. "Many of them are being transferred by buses to the Syrian border."

Speaking to ARA News, civil rights activist Abdo Baqi reported that aside from those who have been arrested, there are dozens and hundreds of bully boyz cross daily these borders, without being questioned by the Turkish authorities.

"If Turkey did not allow the bandidos gunnies enter from its border to Syria, the Kurdish areas would have not suffered during the past four years," he argued.

The Turkish opposition activists and Syrian media workers accuse the Turkish government of being soft on the issue of bully boyz crossing from Turkey into Syrian territory.

#2  It does seem a little half-hearted and maybe amateurish. I can almost hear Mickey Rooney saying "Hey kids, let's put on an airstrike!"

I suspect the slow tempo is not due to a lack of targets, but an approval process for each one that goes up the food chain to somewhere in the vicinity of the White House and back down to the guys doing the work. That and the need to appear to be involved while doing as litle as possible.
