Officials: Militants blow up natural gas pipeline in Sinai
[Ynet] Security officials in Egypt say suspected Islamic Death Eaters have blown up a natural gas pipeline outside el-Arish, the picturesque provincial capital of North Sinai.

The officials say authorities stopped the flow of the gas to extinguish the fire after the blast, which happened early Sunday morning.

No group immediately claimed the attack. However,

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to speak to journalists.

Egypt's state news agency MENA said the pipeline supplies natural gas to a power station and homes in el-Arish.

#2  Well this is special.

Fajr Libya is aligned with the Muslim Bruderbund and now we have ISIS wanting to duke it out with them. Then we have Fajr Libya wanting to fight with the LNA who is fighting Ansar al Sharia, which has pledged allegiance to ISIS. So is this whole Charlie foxtrot falling around shia/sunni divisions or what.

The longer they fight in Libya the less I understand who is who.

Boko Haram Raids Two Nigeria Towns
[AnNahar] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Islamists raided two towns in northeastern Nigeria, torching public buildings and looting food and fuel stores, residents and a police officer told AFP on Sunday.

Islamist gunnies in pick-up trucks and on cycle of violences stormed the towns of Galda and Fika in Yobe state late Saturday, firing wildly and forcing residents indoors.‎

The latest violence in the region comes shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari took office on Friday vowing to crush the Islamist group that has waged a six-year insurgency.

After repelling a military offensive, Boko Haram stormed Fika, 150 kilometers (95 miles) from the state capital Damaturu, burning a cop shoppe and public buildings including ‎a law court, a local administration building and a primary school.

"Boko Haram gunnies came in two pick-up trucks and on several cycle of violences around 9:00 pm (2000 GMT) and kept firing shots haphazardly and firing RPGs on the cop shoppe where they forced the coppers to flee and residents to run indoors," Fika resident Abubakar Maigoro said.

The Islamists also torched a cluster of government-built homes for civil servants‎ and 13 vehicles parked outside people's houses, Maigoro said.

"They burnt all the telecom masts in the town and we have to go to hill tops in the bush where we can get phone signals to make calls," resident Ibrahim Sagir said.

No information on casualties is available because communications are down.

Troops who mobilized from Potiskum, 50 kilometers (30 miles) away, to combat the Islamists were outgunned and forced to withdraw after intense fighting, Maigoro and Sagir said.‎

Boko Haram snuffies also attacked Galda, 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Fika, at around 8 pm (1900 GMT)‎.

"The gunnies stormed our town firing everywhere to scare people away before breaking into shops and carting away food and jerry cans of petrol‎," resident Muhammad Garba said.‎

A police officer in Potiskum confirmed the accounts.

"Fika and Galda came under attack from Boko Haram last night. They burnt several public buildings in Fika and looted shops in Galda,"he said, asking not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

"Soldiers deployed from here but they were overpowered ‎by the gunnies," he said.

"We are yet to receive any report on casualties. Communication with the area has been disrupted as a result of the burning of telecom masts in the attack‎s."

The reports of the raids came after a deadly suicide kaboom inside a mosque in the city of Maiduguri killed at least nine people on Saturday just a day after Buhari was sworn in.

Overnight Friday, residents in a suburb south of the same city woke to the sound of RPGs being fired as Boko Haram tried to advance.

Suicide Bombing in Northeast Nigeria Mosque Kills at Least 9
[AnNahar] A jacket wallah killed at least nine people on Saturday inside a mosque in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
's city of Maiduguri, with the blast leaving much of the building destroyed, witnesses said.

"It was suicide kaboom by a bomber who pretended to be worshiper," said Haruna Dawud, a trader at the Monday Market which is next to the mosque.

The Monday Market has over the past year been hit by several suicide kabooms blamed on Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
. The Islamist murderous Moslems launched an overnight attack on Maiduguri on Saturday but were repelled by the military.

Dawud said he saw 20 bodies being evacuated after the blast at roughly 3:30 pm (1430 GMT) but could not confirm how many were dead.

Another trader, Nura Khalid, said he personally counted nine corpses being taken out of the mosque.

"The roof was blown off and fire destroyed the mats and a few Korans," Khalid told AFP.

Sada Umaru, a trader who participated in the rescue operation, also said the corpse count may reach 20 or higher, but like Dawud, was not able to confirm a specific toll amid the chaos that followed the blast.

Umaru confirmed the accounts of other witnesses that the attacker entered the mosque pretending to be a worshiper who had come for afternoon prayers.

The bombing and the thwarted Boko Haram attack on Maiduguri came hours after Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn into office, vowing to crush the krazed killer group.

Arabia
U.S. Says Several Americans 'Detained' in Yemen
[AnNahar] Several Americans have been detained in Yemen, a State Department official said Sunday, amid reports that at least four U.S. citizens are being held by Iranian catspaws.

The Washington Post reported that the Americans were believed to be held by the Huthi militia in a prison near the capital Sanaa, and that U.S. efforts to secure their release had faltered, hampered by the fact that Washington has no direct links to the rebels.

The State Department had seen the "reports that several U.S. citizens have recently been detained in Yemen," the official told AFP.

"We are doing everything we can to get these individuals released," the official said, but would not say how many were held or who was holding them.

"The protection of U.S. citizens abroad is a top priority," he added, saying for privacy and safety reasons no further information could be given.

U.S. officials, quoted by the Post, said none of those held were U.S. babus government employees.

Three of the prisoners were believed to work in the private sector, while a fourth was a dual U.S.-Yemen

citizen.

Amid the violence, Washington closed its embassy in Sanaa in February and has temporarily relocated its ambassador and staff in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

U.S. officials said that efforts to secure the release of the Americans had been mainly through "intermediaries including humanitarian groups that continue to have a presence in Sanaa," the Post said.

One of the prisoners had been approved to be released in recent days, but the rebels went back on their decision, the Post said. He had initially been detained for overstaying his visa, but then the rebels accused him of traveling to "sensitive" areas in Yemen, a U.S. official told the Post.

A fifth American, identified by the daily as Sharif Mobley, is being held on terrorism charges brought against him more then five years ago, the paper said.

Shelling from Yemen kills Saudi border guard, wounds 7
Riyadh, Saudi-occupied Arabia -- Saudi Arabia’s state news agency has reported that shelling from Yemen has killed a border guard and wounded seven as a coalition that the country leads continues to target rebels there.

The Saudi Press Agency reported late on Saturday that the Lance Cpl. Ismail Mohammed Ibrahim Sindi was killed around 6:30 pm (1530 GMT, 11:30 a.m. EDT) by the shelling targeting the country’s Jazan region. The agency said “the border guard dealt with the situation accordingly,” without elaborating.

A Saudi-led coalition has been targeting rebels in Yemen, known as Houthis, since March 26. Cross-border shelling has killed Saudi border guards and soldiers amid the campaign.

#1  One thing I've wondered about this little kerfuffle is the true strength of the KSA.

They have always seemed like the ultimate stable base for anything going on in the mid-east. Any trouble on the periphery (see Kuwait) and someone else would jump in. Now it seems that KSA must take the lead with some other weapon than the price of oil.

Could KSA actually be more like the USSR? A country with a formidable looking shell but weak in the middle?

What happens when that shell is cracked? Will the whole country crumble as the USSR did? Remember the speed with with which the Soviet empire disintegrated once the first crack appeared.

Keep frackin' boys. We're gonna need it.

#2  Ksa is construct, and a poorly designed one at that. The custodians and ground keepers of the two attractions should have been kept separate from the small coastal strip of land that is Shia and produces 80% of the oil.

Arab war planes bomb Houthi positions throughout Yemen
Sanaa -- Aircraft from a Saudi-led coalition bombed Yemen’s Houthi rebels throughout the country on Sunday, residents said, a day after border clashes killed a Saudi serviceman. The raids hit an air base near Sanaa airport and a military installation aligned with the Houthis overlooking the presidential palace compound in the capital Sanaa.

The Houthis’ TV channel Al Masira said the coalition had launched 25 air strikes on the main Houthi provinces of Saada and Hajja along the Kingdom’s border, without giving details, and said Saudi ground forces were also shelling the areas.

Residents in Saada confirmed that Houthi positions were heavily bombed by war planes, but there was no immediate confirmation by Saudi authorities.

In the central city of Taez, also a main battleground between armed Hadi loyalists and Houthi militiamen, residents reported Arab air strikes on Houthi forces gathered in a historic mountaintop fortress and a nearby special forces base.

Heavy artillery clashes along Yemen’s border with the Kingdom have increased as the war enters its ninth week. Houthi TV reported that the rebels fired 20 rockets at Saudi Arabia’s southwestern border city of Najran on Saturday.

A Saudi Ministry of Interior spokesman said a border guard was killed and seven others were wounded on Saturday in the Najran region due to rocket attacks from inside Yemen.

Saudi-led Yemen coalition still using cluster bombs: HRW
[DAWN] Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
on Sunday published new evidence alleging a Saudi-led coalition is using internationally banned cluster bombs in Yemen, urging it to stop such attacks that were harming civilians.

The New York-based watchdog said it documented the use of three types of cluster munitions in Yemen, where Saudi-led warplanes have pounded positions of rebels and allies loyal to former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
since March 26.

"The Saudi-led coalition and other warring parties in Yemen

need to recognise that using banned cluster munitions is very likely to harm civilians," said HRW's senior emergencies researcher Ole Solvang.

"These weapons can't distinguish military targets from civilians, and their unwent kaboom! submunitions threaten civilians, especially children, even long after the fighting," she added in a statement.

The organization said the banned munitions had maimed civilians including a child in attacks on northern stronghold of the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels, pointing out that a HRW team had visited Saada province this month.

Two of three people maimed in one attack from the air were likely to have been civilians, while the source of ground-fired cluster bombs that maimed four other civilians, including a child, was not determined, HRW said.

Both cases took place in an area under attack by the coalition, it added.

The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and the nine Arab members of the coalition are not signatories of the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions that prohibits their use.

A tranquil Muslim hamlet in the Catskills - until the attack plot
[Rooters] Just beyond the gated entrance to the tiny Catskills community of Holy Islamberg, population 200, cows graze and ducks glide on a tranquil pond. Modest houses of wood and cinder block sit along the hamlet's single thoroughfare, a rutted dirt road without traffic signs.

Islamberg sits about 150 miles northwest of New York City, but the small enclave of Muslim families living on shared land feels a world away from city life, which is what its founders intended 30 years ago, when they established the hamlet on 70 acres of pasture land and dense woods in upstate New York.

Last month, however, the community's serenity was disrupted by news that a Tennessee man had pleaded guilty to charges of plotting an attack on Islamberg and its residents.

Formed by a group of African-American Muslims from New York City, the community follows the teachings of Pakistani Sufi cleric Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani, who during the 1980s urged his American acolytes to leave metropolitan areas and establish rural communities centered on religious life.
Not exactly the peaceful family monastery/commune that sentence suggests. We've been following them for a decade. The FBI has for even longer, though the State Department, last I saw, has not declared the umbrella organization a foreign terror organization. Key names associated with the Islambergs (there are about twenty, as I recall) are Muslims of America and Jamaat ul Fuqra. They train actively for jihad, and regularly send off members to participate.
Today, Islamberg is one of about a dozen Muslim enclaves formed in accordance with the cleric's ideas. It also serves as home to Muslims of America, a Gilani-founded organization.

"We're living the American dream," said Faruq Baqi, 39, who moved to Islamberg with his family as a child, and now works in telecommunications at a nearby hospital.

An array of far-right organizations see things very differently. Dozens of internet postings and a documentary film have characterized the community as a training camp for terrorists and its residents as Islamist warriors.
A google search of Islamberg "Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani", using the terms in this Reuters article, yields illuminating results, including a clearly sanitized Wikipedia entry for the gentle cleric, and a not yet sanitized linked entry for Jamaat ul -Fuqra. The bylined Reuters journalist, however, dismisses all concerns. One wonders why.
One blog on the Christian Action Network, for example, described the settlement as "America's first Islamic government," and warned that children are being raised to fight a holy war, that girls are denied an education and that rule breakers "are often tied to trees and whipped for disobeying."

Robert Doggart, a one-time congressional candidate from Tennessee, embraced that sort of overheated rhetoric as he plotted his attack on the Muslim enclave.

Iraqi forces say they are grouping for major assault on ISIS in Ramadi
[Rudaw] Iraqi forces reported gains against ISIS in the city of Ramadi in Anbar province, reporting that the bully boyz have lost the will to fight and that government had received reinforcements for a multi-pronged assault.

Azal al-Fahdawi, a member of the Anbar provincial council, told Rudaw on Sunday that Iraqi forces had taken control of the Anbar Traffic department, as well as the neighborhood of Sabaa west of the city.

"After a tense battle, Iraqi forces retook control of the Anbar Traffic directorate's building and the Ramadi neighborhood of Sabaa," Fahdawi said. "The group's remaining elements fled to other ISIS-controlled areas in Ramadi," he said.

"In the next few hours the equations of power will dramatically change in Ramadi, because the ISIS bully boyz have lost their morale and we have received a supporting force to launch a multi-pronged assault inside Ramadi." Fahdawi announced.

In a separate announcement Farhan Mohammed, another member of the Anbar provincial council, told Rudaw that the battle for Ramadi would take time because the Iraqi forces did not launch an immediate counter-attack against ISIS, after losing Ramadi about a fortnight ago. US-led coalition warplanes pounded ISIS munitions dumps in the areas of Jazira and Badiya east of Ramadi, the Iraqi defense ministry said in a statement Sunday.

"The warplanes managed to destroy ISIS bases and arsenals in the towns of Badiya and Jazira, causing heavy casualties among the group's bully boyz in the area and destroying all the ammunitions and weapons in the bases," it added.

Iraqi army says it killed ISIS military leader in targeted strike
[Rudaw] The Iraqi military said it killed an ISIS military leader in a targeted strike in Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
also killing several other murderous Moslems.

"Relying on intelligence information, the Baghdad Operations Command successfully carried out a military operation to kill Abu Karar, the military leader of the group in the area of Rashad in eastern Fallujah," the BOC said.

Several other forces of Evil also were killed in the strike, it said in a statement. "Security forces launched an assault on the ISIS bases in Fallujah's eastern areas of Garma and Rashad, destroying bases. The corpse count among the forces of Evil in the bases has remained unclear," it added.

Last week, Shiite militias fighting near the Fallujah district of Garma in Anbar province claimed they killed an ISIS leader and five of his deputies.

"In the fight against ISIS in the sub-district of Garma east of Fallujah, Hatam Shahada, known as Abu Mosab Muhajir, was killed along with 20 other forces of Evil and two of the killed forces of Evil hold foreign IDs," Brigadier General Mahmoud Marzi, a Hashd al-Shaabi commander, told news agencies on Tuesday.

Also called Popular Mobilization Units or PMUs, the Hashd al-Shaabi are volunteer Shiite militias who have sworn to fight the Sunni ISIS.

Marzi added that Iraqi joint forces consisting of the Hashd al-Shaabi, the Badr Organization and Sunni tribal regiments were locked in an intense battle with ISIS in Garma.

Ministry of Defense: Iraqi forces recapture areas around Tikrit
[Rudaw] Iraqi joint forces have recaptured new areas near Tikrit in Salahaddin province previously held by ISIS fighters, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense has announced.

According to the statement released Sunday, "Iraq ground forces belonging to Brigade 17, backed by federal police and Hashd al-Shaabi militias with air support from Iraqi warplanes, have repelled ISIS gunnies in western Salahaddin province."

Areas such as Said Gharib, Smellat and Kasarat, Qrsabya and Bushlesh, Amana and Umm Talaib and Busail were allegedly recaptured by Iraqi forces Saturday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had been cornered by the banditti...
a statement released by the Shiite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi, aka Popular Mobilization Units, said Saturday the groups' fighters pushed away ISIS jihadis in the north of Salahaddin province. The statement claimed casualties from the ISIS side were high, but did not provide further details.

Saturday's announcements of progress in Salahaddin come as Iraqi forces and thousands of Shiite bully boyz are battling ISIS in the Sunni-dominated Iraqi province of Anbar, reportedly with no significant advances so far.

IRAQ: Iranian-Backed Shia Militias Take A Page Out Of The ISIS Book Of Torture, Burn A Sunni Muslim Alive
[WalidShoebat] By BI: A graphic video out of Iraq was leaked online and alleges to show Iraqi Shia militants burning a tied-up Sunni Muslim over a fire while he screams for help.

The Islamic religious divisions of Sunni and Shia are a major driving force behind the unrest in the Middle East. Sunnis are puritanical in their interpretation of the Quran, while Shia venerates imams much like Catholics venerate saints. Sunnis view this veneration as idolatry and paganic.
I did not know this.
In the video, the alleged Shias seem jovial over their capture and barbaric killing of a Sunni.

Southeast Asia
Abu Sayyaf militants blamed in Jolo blast
[Manila Times] Four suspected Abu Sayyaf bomb-makers were identified as those behind the separate explosions at the Sulu Provincial Police Office Headquarter and a mosque inside the camp in Jolo on Friday night that wounded at least 14 civilians and police personnel.

Police identified the four suspects as Muammar Askali, Edimar Isnain, Nidil Bali and Alkam Hadjail, Abu Sayyaf militants in Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Investigation has indicated that Askali and Isnain planted a black bag containing improvised explosive devices in a sari-sari variety store located inside a gate of the police headquarters, while Bali, with his companion Hadjail, threw a grenade near the mosque.

Askali and Isnain were among Abu Sayyaf militants tagged in various kidnappings in Basulta including the Germans Stefan Viktor Okonek and Henrike Dielen and two teachers in Zamboanga Sibugay, Reynadit Silvano and Russel Bagonoc.

Sr. Supt. Abraham Orbita, provincial director of Sulu police, believes that the twin blasts on Friday were a retaliatory attack over the arrest of other Abu Sayyaf militants.

Police kill man near Asia security summit
[SKYNEWS.AU] An international security summit was put on lockdown in Singapore after police rubbed out a man who crashed his car through the barriers at a checkpoint.

The 34-year-old, who had two passengers in the vehicle, was stopped at the police checkpoint near the Shangri-La Hotel, which was hosting the top-level conference, just after 4am (local time).

But when officers asked him to open the boot of his car, he sped off.

Police say the car crashed through police barricades and was "endangering the lives of the officers" before they "shot up the vehicle to stop further danger".

The driver was killed and one of his passengers was maimed and taken to hospital. All three men in the car were Singaporean.

Both passengers were incarcerated

after police found what they believe to be controlled drugs and a "drug-making utensil" in the car.

"The driver and one of the passengers are wanted by authorities for various offences," police said in a statement, adding that no weapons or explosives were found in the vehicle.

Six wounded in attack on school security team
[The Nation] Four soldiers and two students were wounded in a bomb explosion in Narathiwat province yesterday, causing a local school to immediately suspend classes. The soldiers, part of a security team providing protection to school teachers in Rangae district, were on patrol when a hidden bomb was detonated.

Initial investigations suggested the blast was part of the ongoing insurgency in the deep South.

Meanwhile, in Pattani province, gunmen opened fire on a ranger base in Yarang district on Thursday night. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. Witnesses said four people on two motorcycles opened fire before fleeing. The suspects are still on the lam.

Leb Army Artillery Destroys Militant Vehicles in Arsal Outskirts
[AnNahar] The Lebanese army opened heavy artillery fire Sunday from its posts in the northern Bekaa at movements by forces of Evil in the Wadi al-Ajram and al-Zamarani areas in the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal, state-run National News Agency reported.

"The heavy artillery shelling destroyed several myrmidon vehicles," NNA said.

Earlier in the day, the agency had reported that the sounds of intense bombardment were heard in the Bekaa during "Syrian Arclight airstrikes on myrmidon gatherings in al-Zamarani."

Kurds Push Back IS in Northern Syria Border Provinces
[AnNahar] Kurdish militia in Syria wrested control of a dozen villages from the hard boy Islamic State

group either side of the jihadist's bastion province of Raqa on Sunday, a monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Kurdish People's Protection Units, backed by air strikes from a U.S.-led anti-IS coalition, seized eight villages from jihadists on the western edges of Raqa province.

"Kurdish units and their allies advanced and took control of at least eight villages southeast of Kobane, amid air strikes by the international coalition," the Britannia-based monitor said.

Kurdish militia and Syrian rebels pushed IS back from Kobane, which lies in northern Aleppo province on the Turkish-Syrian border, in January.

Since then, YPG units have edged east towards Raqa, which IS declared the capital of its self-styled caliphate last year.

Syrian Kurdish fighters also seized control of four villages from IS near a border town in Hasakeh, east of Raqa, the Observatory said.

"There are still festivities between the YPG and IS southwest of Ras al-Ain," the monitor said, adding that at least eight IS fighters and three Kurdish militia were killed in the fighting.

On Saturday, IS launched an assault on Hasakeh's picturesque provincial capital, advancing to within four kilometers (less than three miles) of the key city.

Regime Raids Kill 20 Civilians in Northwest Syria
[AnNahar] Regime air strikes killed at least 20 civilians in a rebel-dominated area of northwestern Syria, a monitor said Sunday after raids elsewhere in the country left more than 70 dead.

"The regime's planes have committed another massacre, this time in Jabal al-Zawiya," a mountainous region in the province of Idlib, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said of the Saturday bombing.

"Many maimed are at death's door," said the Britannia-based group, which relies on a network of sources on the ground.

The raids came on the same day that barrel bombs dropped by Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
's helicopters killed more than 70 civilians, including children, in the northern province of Aleppo.

Those strikes, which targeted a market in the jihadist-controlled town of Al-Bab as well as a rebel-held neighborhood in Aleppo city, prompted an international outcry.

"This is further shocking proof of the horrific and indiscriminate methods the Assad regime is using to kill and injure innocent civilians, including children," said British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.

"Our position remains as strong as ever -- we will continue to call for a political transition to a future in which Assad has no part," he said.

Regime barrel bombs -- crude weapons made of containers packed with explosives -- have often struck schools, hospitals, and markets in Syria.

But Saturday's corpse count was among the highest.
