Islamic State seizes another town in Libya
[Al Ahram] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
forces of Evil have seized another town in Libya, the group and a military source said on Friday, expanding the territory they control in the strifetorn country.

The krazed killer group, which controls large parts of Iraq and Syria, has exploited a security vacuum in Libya as two rival governments struggle for power, four years after the ousting of Muammar Qadaffy
...Custodian of Wheelus AFB for 42 long years until he was ejected from the gene pool by his indignant citizens...
.

Islamic State took over the city of Sirte on Libya's central Mediterranean coast in stages this year, occupying government buildings and last month the city's airport.

The group has now also taken over the town of Harwa to the east of Sirte, according to a statement posted on social media. A military source confirmed forces of Evil were controlling Harwa, adding they had taken over government buildings.

Islamic State has grabbed credit for the killings of dozens of Egyptian and Æthiopian Christians, the storming of a luxury hotel in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and attacks on oilfields as well as suicide kabooms in several cities.

The group has a strong presence in the eastern city of Derna and has carried out suicide kabooms in Benghazi, the main eastern city.

The government of premier Abdullah al-Thinni has been based in the east since losing the capital Tripoli in August to a rival administration.

, during a gathering for supporters of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP).

The kaboom caused the injury of at least 10 people, who were transferred to a hospital for treatment, local media reported on Friday.

The cause of the blast was not immediately clear. According to local sources, the blast was caused by a fault with a power distribution unit, near the location of the pro-HDP rally.

The kaboom took place before the co-president of the HDP, Selahettin Demirtas, delivers a speech in the same location.

Texas man sentenced to prison for trying to join Islamic State
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] An Austin, Texas man was sentenced on Friday to almost seven years in prison for attempting to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State militant group.

Michael Wolfe, 24, was sentenced to 82 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks in Austin, the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement.

He pleaded guilty last June to attempting to provide material support to Islamic State after he was arrested as part of a Federal Bureau of Investigation sting operation.
Last June? And he's actually sentenced eleven months later?
Wolfe had planned to travel to Europe where he was scheduled to meet an FBI undercover agent who he believed would help him travel through Turkey and then into Syria so he could take up arms for the militant group.

But Wolfe was arrested at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston as he was about to board the first flight of his journey.

Another Texas-area man arrested the same day, Rahatul Ashikim Kahn, also pleaded guilty last July on similar charges.

Wolfe's lawyer, Horatio Aldredge, said his client "never planned or intended to harm any American either in the U.S. or overseas."

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas said a sentencing date for Kahn has not yet been scheduled.

Pakistan refuses to share nukes with Saudi Arabia
[NATION.PK] Pakistain ruled out sharing its nuclear weapons with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, insisting Thursday that the atomic arsenal would continue serving solely for Pakistain's national defense even as world powers and Iran near a possible nuclear agreement.

Closing a wide-ranging trip to Washington, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry angrily rejected speculation that his country could sell or transfer nuclear arms or advanced technology as "unfounded and baseless."

Pakistain has long been among the world's greatest proliferation threats, having shared weapons technology with Iran, Libya and North Korea. And American and other intelligence services have been taking seriously the threat of Saudi Arabia or other Arab countries potentially seeking the Moslem country's help in matching Iran's nuclear capabilities, even if the U.S. says there is no evidence of such action right now.

"Pakistain is not talking to Saudi Arabia on nuclear issues, period," Chaudhry insisted. The arsenal, believed to be in excess of 100 weapons, is focused only on Pakistain's threat perception from "the East," Chaudhry said, a clear reference to long-standing rival and fellow nuclear power India.

Chaudhry said his country has significantly cracked down in recent years on proliferation, improving its export controls and providing U.N. nuclear monitors with all necessary information. Pakistain also won't allow any weapons to reach terrorists, he said.

Pakistain detonated its first nuclear weapons in 1998, shortly after India did.

At the same time, the father of Pakistain's nuclear program, A.Q. Khan, was shopping advanced technology to many of the world's most distrusted governments. He sold centrifuges for enriching bomb-making material to the Iranians, Libyans and North Koreans, and also shared designs for fitting warheads on ballistic missiles. He was forced into retirement in 2001.

Concerns now center on how the Sunni Arab governments of the Middle East will respond if the U.S. and other governments clinch a nuclear deal with Shiite Iran by the end of the month. Such questions inevitably lead to Pakistain, the only Moslem country in the nuclear club and one with historically close ties to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi officials, for their part, have repeatedly refused to rule out any steps to protect their country, saying they will not negotiate their faith or their security.

Chaudhry was in the American capital for a U.S.-Pakistain strategic dialogue and meetings with several senior diplomatic and military officials.

The State Department said Wednesday the agenda included "international efforts to enhance nuclear security" as well as nonproliferation and export controls. It described the discussions as "productive" and said the governments would work together to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

Malala attackers secretly acquitted
[NATION.PK] Eight of the 10 men reportedly placed in durance vile
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
for the attempted liquidation of Pak schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai
...a Pashtun blogger and advocate for girls' education from Mingora, in Swat. She started blogging at age 11-12. She was 15 when a Talib boarded her school bus and shot her in the head in 2012. She was evacuated to a hospital in Britain and the Pak Taliban vowed to kill her and her father. Among other awards, she received the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, which she deserved more than Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, Yasser Arafat, or Rigoberta Menchu...
were actually set free, it has emerged.

In April, officials said that 10 Taliban fighters had been found guilty and received 25-year jail terms. But sources have now confirmed that only two of the men who stood trial were convicted.

The secrecy surrounding the trial, which was held behind closed doors, raised suspicions over its validity. The court judgement - seen for the first time on Friday more than a month after the trial - claims that the two men convicted were those who shot Ms Yousafzai in 2012.

It was previously thought that both the gunnies and the man who ordered the attack had fled to Afghanistan.

Muneer Ahmed, a front man for the Pak High Commission in London, said on Friday that the eight men were acquitted because of a lack of evidence.

Saleem Marwat, the district police chief in Swat, Pakistain, separately confirmed that only two men had been convicted.

Mr Ahmed claimed that the original court judgement made it clear only two men had been convicted and blamed the confusion on misreporting.

But Sayed Naeem, a public prosecutor in Swat, told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named news agency after the trial: "Each murderous Moslem got 25 years in jail. It is life in prison for the 10 turbans who were tried by an anti-terrorist court." In Pakistain, a life sentence is 25 years.

The acquittals emerged after news hounds from the London-based Daily Mirror attempted to locate the 10 convicted men in prisons in Pakistain.

Tariq Aziz, Iraqi foreign minister under Saddam, dies in jail
[NATION.PK] Tariq Aziz, who was foreign minister of Iraq under Saddam Hussein, has died in prison, Iraqi officials said today. He was 79.

Aziz surrendered in April 2003 to the U.S. invasion force that overthrew Saddam. He was sentenced to death seven years later for the persecution of Islamic parties under Saddam.

He had long complained of ill health during his detention.

Dr Saadi al-Majid, head of the health department of Dhi Qar governorate, where Aziz was being held, confirmed Aziz's death:

"Tariq Aziz arrived at al-Nasiriya Educational hospital suffering from a severe heart attack. He had heart complications that led to his death at 3 p.m. (0800 ET)."

The governor of Dhi Qar, Yahya al-Nasiri, said the body would be handed over to Aziz's relatives in Iraq "as soon as our routine procedures and investigations are concluded".

Aziz's son Zaid told Rooters in Amman that Aziz's wife had visited him in prison on Thursday and had asked the prison authorities to take him to hospital. He said the prison had refused, though this could not be confirmed independently.

"His voice was deteriorating but he was not dying," Zaid said.

Aziz, a fluent English speaker, played a prominent diplomatic role in the run-up to the 1991 Gulf War, when a U.S.-led coalition drove Iraqi forces out of Kuwait, as well as in the long-running disputes over United Nations

fighters trying to advance into the northeastern city of Hasaka in an offensive that is adding to the pressure on Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

following recent defeats elsewhere.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war, also reported fierce battles between Islamic State bandidos Lions of Islam and the army backed by allied militia on the city's southern outskirts.

Islamic State this week launched a big offensive targeting the government-held portion of Hasaka city, which is divided into zones run separately by the state and a Kurdish administration that has a well-organized militia.

The attack follows heavy defeats this last month for Islamic State in the northeast by the Kurdish YPG militia. With air support from a U.S.-led alliance, the YPG has driven the jihadists from swathes of the surrounding area.

Islamic State has used around a dozen suicide boom-mobileers in the attack on Hasaka city this week, and has seized two government-held positions south of the city - a prison under construction and a power installation.

An Islamic State news bulletin said the group's fighters were 1 km from the city, with only one army position separating them from its southern entrance. A Syrian military source said, however, that Islamic State's attack had been repelled, describing the situation as excellent.

The Observatory said dozens of combatants had been killed on both sides in this week's fighting.

Assad, having lost territory to Lions of Islam in the northwest, east and south in recent months, is under greater military pressure than at any point in the four-year-long conflict.

Islamic State's capture of Palmyra from government forces last month marked the first time the group had seized a large population directly from government control.

The war is a focal point for a regional struggle between conservative Gulf Arab Sunni states and Shi'ite Islamist Iran.

Government
Champ Plans to Free Up to 10 Detainees from GITMO Soon
[Breitbart] The Obama administration, while the Senate debates halting transfers out of the Guantanamo Bay detention center and keeping the prison operable indefinitely, is planning to free up to 10 detainees, possibly in June, Defense One has learned.

"You're likely to see some progress in June," an unnamed senior defense official told Defense One. "I just talked to the National Security Council and State [Department], so we can say maybe up to 10 -- no specific timeframe, but in the near future. And then we're actively engaged with a number of countries in additional negotiations regarding the 57 that are eligible. But sometime this summer, maybe June, up to 10."

The Pentagon, as part of an interagency review, has cleared 57 of the detention center's 122 prisoners for transfer to other countries.

In anticipation of the Republican takeover of Congress last year, the Obama administration sped up transfers in an effort to empty out the detention center before the new GOP majority could block attempts to close it.

There have been no transfers since January, notes Defense One.
