Shebab Militants Target Kenyan Police in IED Attack
[AnNahar] Suspected Death Eaters from the Somali-led Shabaab Islamist group carried out a kaboom against Kenyan police on Monday, but the officers escaped unharmed, a Kenyan official said.

The attack took place in the coastal county of Lamu, which borders Somalia and has been hit by a wave of attacks by the Al-Qaeda linked group.

Northeastern regional commissioner Mohamud Saleh said a police four-wheel drive vehicle hit an IED (improvised bomb) while officers were traveling to Lamu from a neighboring county to buy supplies.

He said the vehicle was badly damaged but that the officers had been evacuated to the nearby town of Hindi.

Shabaab Death Eaters have recently been blamed for a string of security incidents in the Lamu area, including attacks on passenger buses and a failed raid on a military base last month.

The turban group is believed to have fighters operating in the area's Boni forest.

In mid-June 2014 close to 100 people were killed in a series of armed assaults on the town of Mpeketoni and surrounding villages in Lamu county.

These attacks, close to the once-popular holiday island of Lamu, led to a collapse in tourism on Kenya's coast after foreign governments warned their nationals against travel to the area.

Mali Forces Arrest Gunmen Linked to Terrorist Attacks
[ALMANAR.LB] The Malian army captured two people linked to Ansar Dine group (Arabic translation of "supporters of the religion") and seized evidence linking them to planned attacks, security sources said on Sunday.

Ansar Dine was part of an alliance of gunnies that helped seize Mali's desert north after a Tuareg uprising in 2012 but was ousted by a French military operation a year later.

The group this week grabbed credit for a series of recent attacks across Mali's south and west, including the capital Bamako, formerly deemed safe.

"An army patrol tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
two men in possession of military material and compromising documents," said one of the sources, adding that the men were captured in the central region of Mopti and taken to Bamako.

He said the documents contained a message from Ansar Dine's Tuareg leader Iyad Ag Ghali to an accomplice in the south about future attacks.

The southern accomplice has not yet been identified, he said, adding that others had been called in for questioning based on the intelligence gathered so far.

A second security source said a total of six people were tossed into the calaboose for questioning, including two women, part of a push to dismantle Ansar Dine's network.

Armed groups and the Malian government signed a peace agreement in June designed to stop uprisings in the north, but Ansar Dine was not part of it.

At Least 11 Dead in Twin Suicide Bombing in Cameroon
[AnNahar] At least 11 people were killed when twojacket wallah'> exploding trollop female suicide bombers blew themselves up near an army camp at Fotokol in troubled northern Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, a local security source said Monday.

A police source in the region confirmed a double attack had taken place on Sunday but was unable to give a precise corpse count.

Northern Cameroon, like Nigeria, Chad and Niger, has been hit in bloody attacks by the Islamist group Boko Haram

The kabooms occurred 50 meters (yards) apart within a few seconds of each other, near a camp of Cameroon's Rapid Intervention Battalion, according to the source in Fotokol.

"I counted 12 bodies," including one of the bombers, the source said.

Cameroonian and Chadian troops, who are deployed in Fotokol under the program to fight Boko Haram, deployed around Fotokol "and killed an Islamist," the source added.

Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari sacks entire military top brass as Boko Haram strikes
[ABC.NET.AU] Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari has sacked his entire military top brass, as Boko Haram

...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, killing 11 people, again underlined the regional threat posed by the Islamists.

Both came after a male jacket wallah, dressed as a woman and wearing a full-face veil, went kaboom! at a crowded market in Chad's capital N'Djamena on Saturday, killing 15.

Mr Buhari's purge of senior military commanders inherited from his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
was widely expected but is the clearest demonstration yet of his quest for a fresh start.

"President Buhari thanks the outgoing service chiefs and national security advisor for their services to the nation and wishes them well in their future endeavours," his office said in a statement.

The former military ruler has made ending the insurgency his top priority but Boko Haram has intensified its campaign since he came to power on May 29, killing some 570 people in Nigeria alone.

At least 15,000 have been killed since 2009.

Promises to halt Boko Haram unfulfilled

The new appointments are Mr Buhari's first to senior roles in his administration, as he looks to overhaul a military that struggled to take on Boko Haram throughout all of last year.

The outgoing chief of defence staff Alex Badeh and heads of the army, navy and air force were appointed in January 2014 after a daring raid by the Islamists against military installations in Maiduguri.

Mr Badeh promised at his investiture in January last year that the insurgency "must be brought to a complete stop before April 2014" -- but if anything, the violence has worsened.

In April last year, hard boy fighters kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from the remote north-eastern town of Chibok in Borno state, provoking global outrage.

Mr Jonathan's administration and the military were criticised for their response and Mr Badeh promised the 219 girls' swift return yet nothing has been seen or heard from them since May last year.

His time in the post also saw Boko Haram overrun vast tracts of north-eastern Nigeria, capturing towns and villages and even proclaiming a self-styled caliphate.

Demoralised frontline troops were seemingly unable to prevent the take-over and protested over a lack of arms and ammunition to take on the better-armed rebels.

Procurement since the end of last year, the arrival of foreign mercenaries and assistance from Cameroon, Chad and Niger have apparently reversed the unprecedented land grab.

But the rebels have since allied themselves to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, handing a potentially more troubling portfolio to Mr Badeh's successor, major-general Abayomi Gabriel Olonishakin.

There will also be questions over who heads the new, regional force due to deploy at the end of the month, with the appointment of major-general Tukur Yusuf Buratai as chief of army staff.

Mr Buratai had been acting as commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force, which has its headquarters in N'Djamena.

Saudi-led airstrikes kill 21 in Yemen two days into UN truce rejected by Riyadh
[Dhaka Tribune] Saudi-led air raids killed 21 civilians in Yemen's capital Sanaa yesterday morning, relatives of the victims and medics told Rooters, two days after the start of a United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
-brokered humanitarian truce
..The purposes of a truce are twofold: 1.) bring up more arms, ammunition, and reinforcements; and 2.) get the enemy to relax his vigilance. A truce is not the same thing as a ceasefire, and a ceasefire doesn't mean you have to stop shooting...
that Riyadh does not recognise.

"Three missiles targeted the neighbourhood, destroying 15 houses and killing 21 people and wounding 45 others," said a resident.

A Saudi-led Arab coalition has been bombing the Houthi

since March 26, aiming to push them back from southern and central areas and restore the country's exiled government.

The Houthis, who are allied to Riyadh's main regional rival Iran, advanced from their northern stronghold a year ago, capturing the capital Sanaa in September and then pushing south early this year, prompting the Saudi-led Arclight airstrikes.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in the fighting and air strikes so far, amplifying an existing humanitarian crisis, but the Houthis and Saleh's forces remain embedded across the populated Western side of the country.

The United Nations brokered a pause in the fighting on Friday to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered, but the Saudi-led coalition said it had not been asked by Yemen's exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, in whose name it is acting, to stop its raids.

Brigadier-General Ahmed al-Asiri, the front man of the coalition, was reported by al Sharq al Awsat newspaper as saying there would be no truce because Houthis were not committed to a ceasefire.

There have also been reports of fighting in breach of the pause conditions in Aden, Marib and Taiz, the main theatres of battle between local resistance movements, tribes, Islamist turbans and the Houthis and Saleh's forces.

A Houthi leader, Saleh al-Samad, described the continued Saudi raids as presenting "a clear challenge to the international community ... to stop this aggression."

A United Nations Security Council resolution in April demanded the Houthis and Saleh's forces quit areas they have captured, release prisoners and surrender weapons taken from army units that have been overrun.

Houthi attack sets refinery ablaze in Yemeni city Aden

The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
forces fired mortar rounds at an oil refinery in the southern Yemeni city of Aden on Monday, starting a huge fire, witnesses and local officials said.

The mortar barrage hit three full storage tanks, in an incident sure to add to the fuel crisis in the southern port. After months of conflict, most of Yemen's oil and gas industry has ground to a halt.

The attack on the refinery in the Buraiqah area sent black smoke and flames swirling high into the night sky.

"We are trying to put out the fire. The shelling targeted the tanks where we were storing diesel and fuel for local consumption in Aden. The damage is going to be very big," one official at the facility told Rooters on condition of anonymity.

The Houthis, who took over the capital Sanaa last September, have been battling local fighters in the south for three months and had attacked the refinery before.

An Arab coalition led by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
has been bombing the Houthis for three months to try to restore Yemen's exiled government, and has imposed a near-blockade on the country, cutting off trade in food and fuel.

Industry sources said in April the 150,000 barrels-per-day Aden refinery had shut its operations and declared force majeure on its imports and exports due to the war.

Residents say that despite heavy shelling, locals had been able to tap the refinery's oil and gas supplies to meet their own needs.

Nationwide fuel shortages have spread disease and suffering in a country where access to water usually depends on fuel powered pumps and over 20 million people - 80 percent of the population - need aid, according to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
.

More than 3,000 people have been killed and over a million displaced in the conflict, which pits the Arab coalition against the Iranian-allied Houthis.

A week-long U.N.-brokered ceasefire was meant to begin on Saturday to allow the delivery of aid. It failed to take hold, after Saudi Arabia refused to recognize the truce and continued air strikes.

NE China: Three 'Xinjiang terrorists' shot dead by police
Police in the north-eastern Chinese city of Shenyang have shot dead three "knife-wielding" men, state media said, calling them Xinjiang terrorists.

A woman was also injured in the raid which took place on Monday afternoon.

Xinjiang province, home to a significant Muslim Uighur population, has seen several clashes and public attacks in recent years, which police have attributed to terrorists.

Monday's incident was one of the few such clashes outside of Xinjiang.

The statement, as reproduced in Chinese media, said that police caught 16 "terrorism suspects" in a raid in Shenyang.

During the raid, officers entered a rented apartment where they "discovered Xinjiang terrorist suspects" and were attacked by four people "wearing masks, holding long knives, and shouting 'holy war' slogans," the statement said.

Police then retreated and called for back-up. More than 200 officers, including an anti-terrorist unit, evacuated nearby residents and surrounded the building. A cherry picker was used to reach the seventh-floor apartment.

Son of Boston police captain charged in alleged ISIS-inspired bomb plot
[BUSINESSINSIDER.IN] A Massachusetts man has been charged in connection with an alleged plot to set off pressure-cooker bombs on behalf of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
myrmidon group, the Department of Justice said on Monday.

ABC reports that the man, Alexander Ciccolo, is the estranged son of a respected Boston police captain.

"Ciccolo's father is Boston police Captain Robert Ciccolo, a veteran commander assigned to Operations at Boston Police headquarters who was one of the first responders to the deadly Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013," ABC reports.

Ciccolo, 23, was incarcerated
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
on July 4 for the unlawful receipt of multiple guns, the DOJ said.

"Ciccolo was arrested immediately after taking delivery of the firearms, which included a Colt AR-15 .223 caliber rifle, a SigArms Model SG550-1 556 caliber rifle, a Glock 17- 9mm pistol and a Glock 20-10 mm pistol," the DOJ said. "Ciccolo had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than a year in jail and therefore was prohibited from possessing firearms."

Prior to his arrest, Ciccolo is alleged to have told a witness that he planned to purchase a pressure cooker similar to that used in the Boston bombings, prosecutors said. Ciccolo said that he was interested in carrying out an ISIS-inspired attack on a highly populated public space, "such as college cafeterias."

Ciccolo told the cooperating witness that he planned on filling a pressure cooker with "lack powder, nails, ball bearings and glass," the DOJ reports.

After Ciccolo's arrest, federal agents conducted a search of his apartment. The agents found "partially constructed" Molotov cocktails that contained a mixture of Styrofoam pieces and motor oil. The DOJ states that Ciccolo had told the cooperating witness previously that he believed such a mixture would "stick to people's skin and make it harder to put the fire out."

"This is a very bad person arrested before he could do very bad things," one senior federal official briefed on the arrest told ABC News.
Anguper Hupomosing9418 submitted an article from Boston.com which added:
When the FBI searched his apartment, they found several partially constructed Molotov cocktails, two machetes, and a long curved knife, according to the complaint.

After his arrest, Ciccolo met with a nurse for a routine medical screening. There, he took a pen and "forcefully stabbed" the nurse in the head, causing a bloody gash and breaking the pen in half, according to the complaint. He also waived his Miranda Rights and reaffirmed his support for ISIS, the FBI said.
Nice lad. An Nahar had an explanation:
The son of a U.S. police officer, who has a history of mental illness and was on probation for drinking, has been charged in connection with an alleged terror plot, officials said Monday.

Alexander Ciccolo, 23, also known as Ali al-Amriki, was placed in durance vile
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
on Independence Day in the northeastern state of Massachusetts and is due to appear in court to answer firearms charges on Tuesday.

He was detained after allegedly taking delivery of four weapons -- two rifles and two pistols -- from an FBI informant. Prosecutors said he had a knife strapped to his waist at the same time.

But court documents unsealed on Monday portrayed a disturbed Ciccolo, an individual with "a long history of mental illness" who was put on probation in February for a drinking conviction.

In the 18 months prior to his arrest he became "obsessed with Islam," prosecutors claim.

Last year, the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the FBI was tipped off that Ciccolo allegedly had expressed a desire to go to Iraq or Syria to fight for IS.

The FBI says that he operated a Facebook page under the name Ali Al Amriki, that was a platform for Lion of Islam postings. Under the photo of a man holding a machete, was written "another day in the forest strengthening myself" and next to the image of a dead American soldier, was written "Thank you Islamic State!"

Last month, he allegedly told an informant about his intention to travel inter-state to bomb two bars and a police station, before switching his focus to attacking a university instead.

Further concerns were raised by Ciccolo's alleged praise of the June 26 massacre of 38 foreign holidaymakers on a beach in Tunisia, which he is accused of calling a "huge accomplishment."

has called upon the army chief to take notice of the alleged violation of army's code of conduct by the director general of Sindh Rangers and other officials and urged him to do justice in the matter.

"Are Rangers a security force or a political party? Does the code of conduct of the armed forces allow the army, its paramilitary forces like Rangers, etc, to issue a charge-sheet against a political party," Mr Hussain asked while addressing from London a convention of party workers here on Sunday.

"We are not against the army; we are against the rotten eggs in the institution... Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif should save Pakistain and throw out the rotten eggs who have embezzled billions of rupees like civilians," he said.

The speech was apparently in response to media reports that quoted Rangers sources as saying the paramilitary force was going to release a factsheet in a couple of days about the March 11 raid on MQM's Nine Zero headquarters in Azizabad.

The Iraqi government officially announced the launch of a military campaign to liberate areas under ISIS control in Anbar province.

Iraq said Sunday its forces had surrounded ISIS in Fallujah and the Anbar thriving provincial capital Ramadi, where they had opened a corridor for civilians to flee before a planned assault begins.

Iraq launches Anbar assault to oust Islamic State

fighters on several fronts in the country's largest province yesterday, saying the battle to drive the hardline forces of Evil out of Anbar was under way.

A front man for the joint operations command said the offensive, which began at dawn, brought together the army, mainly Shi'ite Hashid Shaabi militias, special forces, police and local Sunni Moslem tribal fighters.

Military sources in Anbar said they met fierce resistance from the myrmidons, who deployed five suicide boom-mobiles and fired rockets to repel their advance on the city of Falluja, about 50 km (30 miles) west of Baghdad.

There were also reports of fighting around the placid provincial capital Ramadi, captured by Islamic State two months ago.

Islamic State's capture of Ramadi two months ago marked the biggest defeat for the Baghdad government since the forces of Evil swept through the north of the country last June and declared a caliphate in parts of Syria and Iraq.

Until Ramadi's fall, Iraqi troops and Hashid Shaabi forces, backed by US-led air strikes, had been pushing Islamic State back, recapturing the eastern province of Diyala and former leader Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit, with the target of retaking djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
Although Ramadi remains the strategic target, military sources and Shi'ite militia leaders have said the initial focus will be on Falluja, which fell to IS 18 months ago.

A US-led coalition of Western and Arab air forces has been bombing Islamic State positions across Iraq, supporting Baghdad's ground forces and its poorly equipped air force.

Iraq has sought to redress its own lack of air power by purchasing F-16 fighter jets from the United States, but deliveries of the 36 aircraft were delayed because of security concerns after the Islamic State offensive last summer.

Yesterday, a first batch of four F-16s landed at Balad air base north of Baghdad, an Iraqi air force officer said.

It was not clear whether the planes would take an immediate role in the operations in Anbar.
Rudaw adds:
The F-16 is a single engine, all-weather military aircraft. It was originally developed by General Dynamics before the manufacturer became part of Lockheed Martin after a merger in 1995.

The jets Iraq ordered are F-16IQ Block 52s, which are considered downgrades from the advanced F-16C/D Block 52. This is seen as part of the US policy of avoiding selling the Iraqi government sophisticated jets capable of using advanced air-to-ground weapons and air-to-air missiles in order to alleviate the fears of regional US allies.

Israeli Occupation Forces Arrest Khodor Adnan in Jerusalem Day after Release
[ALMANAR.LB] Israeli occupation forces on Monday evening enjugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
veteran Paleostinian hunger striker Khodor Adnan while heading into Jerusalem's Old City to take part in Laylat al-Qader prayers a day after he was freed from an Israeli prison.

Israeli soldiers detained Adnan, 37, at Herod's Gate at the entrance to Jerusalem's Old City.

He was reportedly taken to the David cop shoppe inside the Old City.

The Zionist authorities in the early hours of Sunday released Adnan who staged a 56-day hunger strike while being detained for a year without charge.
The Times of Israel adds:
Paleostinian activist Khader Adnan was tossed in the calaboose

Monday in Jerusalem and held for several hours before being freed.

Adnan was detained in the Old City of Jerusalem, where he sought to attend Ramadan prayers, because Israeli restrictions barred Paleostinians under 50 from attending, police said.

He was released home after several hours.

Officials with the Paleostinian security services said Adnan was arrested while heading to to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the third-holiest site in Islam, for a special ceremony during the sacred fasting month of Ramadan.

"Khader Adnan was arrested because he had no right to be in the Old City of Jerusalem where free access is allowed to West Bank Paleostinians only aged 50 and above, and he is just 37," Israel Police spokesperson Luba Samri told AFP.

Samri insisted, however, it was not an arrest as such, but an "inquiry to investigate the offense committed by Khader Adnan."

Micky Rosenfeld, another police front man, said Adnan is "an Islamic Jihad

Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights identified the leaders as an Iraqi, Abu Osama al-Iraqi, and a Syrian named Amer al-Rafdan.

Rami Abdulrahman, head of the U.K.-based Observatory for Human Rights, said that it could not be determined whether it was the Syrian Army or the U.S.-led coalition, which runs a separate aerial campaign, that carried out the air strike in Hasaka Province.
