, including a Pak.

The operation was launched in Hesarak, Sherzad and Khoghyani districts of the province which border with Pakistain. The operation was launched to clear turbans and will continue for a month, a front man for Nangarhar Police Chief, Hazrat Hussian Mashriqiwal said.

"The turbans have been targeted by ground and air forces," Mashriqiwal said. "The forces have also re-opened the road through Sherzad and Hesarak district - after turbans closed it off three years ago."
"So far five military soldiers and a policeman were maimed during the operation," he said.

Sherzad, Hesarak and Khoghyani are insecure districts in which the Taliban turbans have activities and often target local security forces.

Ghazni Hostages Released
[Tolo News] The remaining ten passengers out of 17 who were kidnapped in central Ghazni province last week were released on Friday evening, local officials said on Saturday.

The passengers were kidnapped in Qarabagh and Jaghori district on Tuesday. Seven of them were released on Wednesday after tribal elders negotiated with the hostage-takers. Ten others were released on Friday evening, a member of Provincial Council of Ghazni, Hassan Reza Yousufi said.

"All the passengers were released and have joined their families in Jaghori," he said.

Earlier, Yousufi warned "if the government does not send troops in to secure the highways of the districts, the highways will become more insecure."
The government is far away. The districts are here. Why not train the unemployed younger sons as a civilian guard, then have them patrol the highways? We in the West have heard much of the vaunted fierceness of the Afghan -- prove it.
Kidnapping cases have increased substantially in the country in recent months, especially on provincial highways.

In February, armed gunnies kidnapped 31 bus passengers in Zabul. After months of negotiations 19 were released in a reported prisoner swap. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
the whereabouts of the remaining 12 hostages is still unknown.

Taliban Seize Villages in Baghlan
[Tolo News] Taliban hard boyz have reportedly seized 10 villages in Burka district in northern Baghlan and that without any festivities in the area.

Meanwhile,
...back at the laboratory the smoke and fumes had dispersed, to reveal an ominous sight...
the tribal elders claimed only few villages in the district were under control of the government. They warned if government failed to retake the villages, the entire district would likely collapse into Taliban hands.

They called on the government to send reinforcement troops to the area in order to combat scores of the Taliban they said had gathered in the district to take control of it.

Mohammad Hanif Kodaye, a member of Baghlan Provincial Council, also admitted to the concerns of the elders and said the hard boyz had asked the residents in Burka district to avoid cooperating with the government.

"Taliban are also extorting money from the residents," he added.

Security officials, however, have not yet confirmed the collapse of villages in Burka.

This comes as Taliban hard boyz are engaged in the festivities with the security forces over the past five days in Dand-e-Ghori area in Pul-e-Khumri, the picturesque provincial capital.

In the recent months, the Insurgents have increased their activities and attacks in northern provinces, especially in Faryab, Kunduz, Baghlan and Badakhshan.

Terrorists Kill Village Imam in Mali after Refusing Recruitment
[ALMANAR.LB] A krazed killer group killed a village imam in central Mali who had refused their repeated attempts to recruit him, a local official told AFP Friday.

Gunmen with suspected links to holy warrior preacher Amadou Koufa killed the imam of Barkerou village, Aladji Sekou, on Thursday night, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The two men arrived by cycle of violence, leaving it on the edge of the village before approaching the imam's home on foot where they shot him, he said, adding that the assailants appeared to be familiar with the area.

Security sources say that Koufa has linked with the Macina Liberation Front (FLM), a new group that emerged earlier this year and has grabbed credit for a number of attacks, some targeting security forces in central Mali.

The FLM draws its support from the Fulani people of central Mali, where Koufa is also from, and is also linked to Ansar Dine -- Arabic for "defenders of the faith" -- one of the groups that took control of Mali's vast arid north in April 2012.

Washington added Ansar Dine to its terror blacklist in 2013, accusing it of close ties to Al-Qaeda and of torturing and killing opponents in the north.

Investigators have found evidence linking the FLM to a deadly raid on a hotel in Sevare on August 7 that killed four foreign UN employees.

Three suspects nabbed

Government calls for Arab air strikes against IS in Sirte
[Libya Herald] The Libyan government in Beida has called on Arab countries to carry out air strikes against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
forces in Sirte, saying that because of the international arms ban it does not have the military capability to hit them.

Following IS's brutal suppression of this week's uprising the town, the government has asked for an extraordinary meeting of the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
on Tuesday to authorise action in Sirte. It cited the Arab states' obligations to held defend a fellow League member under attack. The request, calling for the permanent ambassadors to the League to approve air strikes, was handed to the League's secretariat today, the League's Deputy Secrertary General, Ahmad Bin Helli, has said.

In a statement today condemning IS' "heinous crimes" in the town's residential district No. 3, including beheadings and other executions, the Thinni government also criticised the inaction of the international community over the IS attacks and its unwillingness to protect innocent civilians. It further called on friendly states to put pressure on the UN Security Council to lift the arms embargo.

There appears to be growing Arab support for air strikes. Yesterday, following a phone call with Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Al-Dairi, the League's Secretary General, Nabil Elaraby, called for Arab governments as well as the international community to agree on action to end the killings by IS in Libya.

There have been reports during the day of further Arclight airstrikes in Sirte. These are thought to be by the Libyan airforce.

Meanwhile,
...back at the hanging, Butch continued with his last words, trying not to repeat himself too often......
in today's statement, the government said that it was focussing all its energies on providing safe corridors out of Sirte so that residents could be evacuated and the maimed treated, outside Libya if necessary.

Yemen Loyalists Take Back Another Province from Rebels
[AnNahar] Forces loyal to Yemen's exiled government retook a fifth southern province Saturday, extending recent gains against Iran-backed Iranian catspaws who still control the capital.

The forces backing exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi have been aided by troops and materiel from Yemen's wealthy Gulf neighbors, as Saudi-led coalition warplanes pound rebel positions.

The rebels handed over Shabwa to government forces and withdrew after being promised a safe route out of the province, a military official told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Other sources confirmed the pull-out.

"The province was handed over" to the Southern Movement, a secessionist group whose holy warriors have been fighting in loyalist ranks, said Salem al-Awlaqi, a political activist in Shabwa.

Officials said the pro-rebel governor of Shabwa, which has substantial oil reserves, had fled as loyalists prepared to enter the province.

They also accused the rebels of booby-trapping government buildings before fleeing, as they had done in other provinces.

As the rebels began entering neighboring Baida province, Saudi-led coalition warplanes hit their convoys, destroying 13 military vehicles and leaving dead and maimed, military officials said.

The sources could not immediately provide a casualty toll, and the rebels rarely acknowledge their losses.

Loyalist forces in the south launched an offensive last month against the rebels, forcing them out of main southern city Aden.

They subsequently retook Daleh, restive Lahj

provinces.

The advance is heading toward third city Taez, southwest of Sanaa, which analysts regard as the gateway to the capital, overrun by the rebels in September.

After seizing Sanaa unopposed, the Huthis advanced on Aden in March, prompting intervention from the coalition aimed at restoring Hadi to power.

have joined the Huthis.

- Taez targeted for liberation -

On the other side, the southern secessionists teamed up with pro-government troops as well as local Sunni tribes to form what they have dubbed Popular Resistance Committees.

Analysts say the sweeping victories in the south are a result of the rebels pulling their forces back to Taez, where residents reported ongoing festivities.

On Friday, loyalist retook several facilities from rebels in Taez, including police and civil defense headquarters, the government's Sabanew.net website reported.

In a telephone call, Hadi reassured the 35th Brigade commander in the city Thursday that "Taez is on its way to being liberated and support will soon reach it."

Military sources say the coalition has provided Hadi's supporters with modern heavy equipment in recent weeks, including tanks and personnel carriers, and Yemeni soldiers trained in Soddy Arabia

.

The conflict has cost nearly 4,300 lives since March, half of them civilians, according to U.N. figures, while 80 percent of Yemen's 21 million people need aid and protection.

Aid workers in the south told AFP aid groups from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and beyond began distributing much-needed food and other supplies to residents in Aden and nearby areas.

The five provinces so far retaken by pro-government troops, along with Mahra and Hadramawt, which the rebels never entered, comprise the formerly independent South Yemen.

It was its own state from the end of British colonial rule in 1967 to its union with the north in 1990.

A secession attempt four years later sparked a brief civil war that ended with northern forces occupying the region.

Five killed in Rangamati 'gunfight'
[Dhaka Tribune] Five persons have been killed in a "shootout" with the members of Bangladesh Army in Rangamati's Baghachharhi upazila.

The army members claimed that the dear departed were members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), while the JSS denied the claim.

One of the dear departed was identified as Rupayon Chakma, 30.

Officer-in-Charge Zakir Hossain Fakir of Baghaichhari cop shoppe said: "Tipped off that the gang was taking preparation to commit crime, a team of army led by Baghaihat zone captain Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Siddique went to Dokhaiapara around 2:30 am yesterday.

"Spider senses tingling at the proximity of the army team, the criminals opened fire on them, prompting the army personnel to fire back, triggering a shootout. Five members of the gang were killed in the two hours long shootout that ended around 4:30 am."

Army trooper Liakat Ali was also injured in the clash, said the OC. "He has been admitted to Combined Military Hospital in Chittagong."

Seven firearms, including one machine gun, one SMG, two rifles, three SLRs, and 500 rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot, reports our Khagrachhari correspondent.

When contacted, Kakoli Khisha, secretary of information and publicity of the breakaway JSS faction, said he did not know any information about the incident.

Lieutenant Colonel Ali Haider Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune: "The bandidos turbans had taken shelter at the house of a man named Joyti Chakma in the area. They hold the residents of that house hostage while firing. They were preparing for conducting a massive operation in the area with the firearms and explosives."

In a statement to the media, United People's Democratic Front Rangamati unit Coordinator Shochol Chakma said: "Some television reports have mentioned the name of UPDF while telecasting reports on the shootout between Army personnel and bandidos turbans on Sunday. This was done to tarnish the image of UPDF."

He accused Turkish government of breaking a peace deal with Kurds and said the Islamic State

#1  Problem for Erdogan's Brownshirts is that they are not facing the old PKK, whcih was a few fanatics with a bit of Russian training. These are leavened with battle hardened troops with leadership that has been in the fight in Syria - and they do have support of the local populace, as well as cross border sanctuary, and terrain that is friendly for guerrilla ops (mountainous and a few urban centers).

This is one Erdogan and his Brownshirts cannot win, despite their psychoses that make them believe they can through "ethnic superiority".

Decades of ethnic repression and racism are going to bring one hell of a high price to Erdogan and his ilk. Turkey will be split. Kurdistan will be liberated. Its only a matter of time and blood.

#2  As for the veracity, Erdogan's troops are inflating casualty counts with "probables" based on estimates like "volume of fire". And they are not clearing, they are fighting and disengaging. This means they are likely as accurate as US counts in Vietnam were - which is to say not accurate at all.

If you're basing your success on body counts, then you are already in a position of losing. Success means pacification, control of the locals, and the ability to operate freely without threat. That takes either overwhelming force (ww2 style), or a heavy but competent footprint which the local perceive as long term, and which is friendly to the locals to convince them they are there to help not harm. See: Iraq, the Surge that ultimately pacified Iraq before we abandoned it - or the Brits cordon and clear in Malay a long time ago.

The turks have none of those - they are simply repressing the locals based on culture/race, continuing the ethnic warfare and genocide as much as they can get away with in this day and age (Armenians know what this is like on a smaller scale early last century).

In other words, maybe double the PKK and there's your proper estimate of Kurd casualties. about 2/3 the PKK estimates is likely the Turk casualty rate. Remember the rebels have nothing to gain my inflating casualties, whereas the Turks need gaudy numbers to indicate they aren't losing. The whole game here is to dress up the threat to buffalo the populace into supporting the regime - and then dress up the results as "we are winning". Either of those fails, Erdogan faces an elector loss - or a bullet in a coup. The o9nly way for the PKK to "lose" is to surrender to a genocide, and that's not going to happen.

#4  Let me be clear about one thing: The PKK are no angels, and factions of the PKK deserve blame for atrocities and have never been brought to full account for their actions. In all honesty the Kurds are better off coming up with a replacement for the PKK, based around Ocalan's "conversion" to peaceful revolution and a grudging acceptance of free markets and abandonment of communism.

That being said, the Turks and their covert (alleged) involvement with ISIS, as well as their "declaration of war on ISIS" which initially consisted of a 30 aircraft raid on Kurdish positions shows the duplicity of the Turks and their true intent of continue ethnic suppression (rather than accommodation) of the Kurdish majority in SE Turkey.

Iraq
U.S. Stockpiling Fighting Vehicles Near Iraq Ahead of Anti-ISIS Offensive
[US News & World Report] Since June, the U.S. military has been slowly stockpiling massive amounts of its gear coming out of Afghanistan at a depot in Kuwait adjacent to a bustling commercial port, in preparation for ultimately shipping it across the border into Iraq for an allied offensive against the Islamic State group.

The facility's warehouses and large asphalt yards now are home to roughly 3,100 vehicles, most of them MRAPs -- the mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles that have been ubiquitous in America's prolonged wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is also some electronic equipment and other supplies at the depot, located at Kuwait's Shuaiba port, defense officials say.

The gear, primarily from the Army, will be fixed up and held as top U.S. planners in Iraq determine what they'll need to defeat the Islamic State group in the coming months, says Air Force Maj. Gen. Rowayne "Wayne" Schatz, the director of operations and plans for U.S. Transportation Command.

"From June to December, we've worked a lot on moving items into Kuwait," he says. "The Army is holding the gear there, and it has room to hold it, as the mission fleshes out."

ISIS attack defeated in Salahadin
[Rudaw] The Tigris operations command said on Saturday that an ISIS assault was repelled in eastern Salahadin province.

"With the help of Hashd al-Shaabi and tribal fighters, Iraqi security forces defeated a massive assault of ISIS gunnies on the oilfields of Allas and Ajail, in the east of Salahadin province," said Abdul Amir Zaid, a Tigris command officer, at a presser Sunday.

"As a result, more than 20 gunnies were killed, most were Chechen nationals, along with the destruction of eight vehicles equipped with heavy weapons," Zaid added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth ordered the space pirate fleet to attack Zemblonia...
a security source told Iraqi agencies that ISIS gunnies had recaptured the area of Albu Jaradian in the town of Baiji in Salahadin, and "they are on the offensive towards the western neighborhoods of Karaba and Naft in Baiji."

The Baiji setbacks came as Iraqi Defense Minister Khalid Obaidi arrived in the town of Zaluia in Salahadin to mark the establishment of the Zaluia-Balad bridge.

On June 30, Hadi al-Amri, the head of the Badr Organization, said the oilfields of Allas and Ajail had become a graveyard for ISIS Lion of Islams, and that they could not return to the provinces of Diyala and Salahadin ever again.

Abu Sayyaf militant killed in Basilan
[ZamboangaToday] Philippine troops clashed anew with Abu Sayyaf militants in the province of Basilan, killing one and wounding three others. While conducting operations, the soldiers encountered 15 or so Abu Sayyaf militants at Sumisip, Basilan early Friday morning.

Military spokesman Rowena Muyuela said that an Abu Sayyaf militant was reportedly killed and three others, including a soldier, were wounded in the clash. She said that one soldier and two other Abu Sayyaf militants belonging to the group of Radzmil Jannatul and Katatuh Balaman were wounded in the exchange.

The clash comes two days after a Moro National Liberation Front militant was killed in an encounter with special forces Wednesday midnight in hinterland of Isabela City, Basilan. Soldiers had been conducting an operation against the Abu Sayyaf in Masola, Isabela City when they were attacked by several armed men.

In a statement, Capt. Roy Vincent Trinidad said, "The troops fought back and held on to their defensive position until the enemies withdrew. In the morning, they found the body of an MNLF member near the area of the enemy's position."
