Bomb Blast Kills 2 Children, Wounds 3 in Northern Afghanistan
[ALMANAR.LB] Two children were killed and three others sustained injuries as a kaboom hit Imam Sahib District in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province on Wednesday, a local official said.

"A mine planted by turbans under a bridge in Imam Sahib district went off at around 10:00 am local time, killing two children and injuring three others, including two children and a woman," district governor Imamudin Qurishi told Xinhua news agency.

He also blamed the attack on the enemies of peace, a reference to the Talibs. However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
the gang, which is fighting the government and are active in parts of Imam District and the neighboring Dasht-e-Archi district, has yet to claim responsibility.

Second day of deadly clashes leaves 8 dead in central Somalia
ABUDWAK -- At least eight fighters from the opposing sides have been reported killed in the second day of deadly clashes in a row in central Somalia town of Abudwak, Garowe Online reports.
Outstanding example of fire control discipline in a pic at the link.
Medics and witnesses said, the fighting raged between forces loyal to Interim Galmudug administration and moderate Islamists, Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamea early in the morning.

The deadly clashes which dragged from Tuesday into late on Wednesday flared up after Ahlu Sunna militiamen raided a building housing Galmudug Commerce Minister Abdilatif Abdullahi Warsame.

A spokesman for Galmudug and Deputy Minister for Constitution, Mohamed Hayir Nur told the media that Ahlu Sunna fomented the deadly violence.

The heaviest armed confrontations began in Abudwak’s October neighborhood where residents are fleeing. Unverified reports indicate that Galmudug soldiers managed to seize Abudwak Police Station, with Ahlu Sunna militias regrouping in vicinity, 3km off Abudwak town.

Three Kenyans nabbed with 'mall IED' in Nairobi
More details on this story from yesterday.
[BBC] Three men have been arrested at a shopping center in Nairobi with a suspected explosive device, which has since been detonated in a controlled explosion. A witness said one of the men refused to be searched by security guards and was overpowered in the ensuing scuffle.

Police spokesman George Kinoti said that the three men in custody were all Kenyans and the explosives were discovered in one of their bags. He said, "The situation is under [the] absolute control of our security agencies and the entire country is under multi-agency surveillance."

Reports say it is believed to have been a small explosive device with a battery and a mobile phone attached.

27 more 'terrorists' killed in second day of major North Sinai operation
[AlAhram] Egypt's army said it killed 27 Death Eaters in the latter stages of a second day of a major operation it began on Monday to eliminate Death Eaters in volatile North Sinai, bringing the corpse count to 56.

The army said 154 suspected Death Eaters have now been locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
by troops and anti-terror police backed up by air support.

Operation Martyr's Right was launched on Monday morning to "root out terrorist elements" in the North Sinai towns of Rafah, Arish and Sheikh Zuweid, in what sources described as the biggest operation of recent months.

Earlier on Tuesday the military said forces had killed 29 "terrorist elements" as it began the "comprehensive operation." It said an army officer and a soldier were also killed, and four maimed, when their armoured vehicle drove over a bomb.

A subsequent statement late on Tuesday said another 27 had been killed, driving the toll up to 56 in two days. It added that forces burnt out several terrorist "dens" and destroyed two explosives caches and tens of cycle of violences and other vehicles used by Death Eaters in terrorist operations.

It also released a three-minute video documenting air and ground assaults on targets in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula.

Algerian Troops Kill Al Qaeda Gunmen
[AnNahar] Algerian soldiers killed two Islamist gunnies Wednesday during an ongoing operation against Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb group, the defense ministry said.

The two were killed near Ain el-Hamra village in the corpse-littered Boumerdes region, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Algiers.

Troops also recovered a Kalashnikov assault rifle and ammunition.

The ministry said the operation against AQIM in the area was still under way.

Algeria still bears the scars of a brutal war between the state and Islamist murderous Moslems in the 1990s.

Despite the adoption in 2005 of a peace and reconciliation charter that was meant to turn the page on a conflict that claimed 200,000 lives, armed Islamist groups are still active.

In July, at least nine soldiers were killed in an ambush southwest of Algiers, an attack claimed by AQIM, which said more than 14 died.

The ministry says that more than 60 Islamists have been killed this year, and that upwards of 100 were killed in 2014.

Obari negotiations between Tebu and Tuareg bogged down over ceasefire terms
[Libya Herald] Attempts by Amazigh elders from the Jebel Nafusa to end the fighting between Tuareg and Tebu militias in the south-western oasis town of Obari have ground to a halt because of ceasefire violations, a senior local Tuareg official has said.

According to Mohammed Abdul Karim, a member of the Social Council of Tuareg Tribes, there has been a two-day meeting between the two communities' representatives at which it was agreed to set up a joint committee chaired by an Amazighi. At it there was agreement on a number of points as well as disagreements on others, but it had agreed a second meeting in Sebha to try and iron them out. However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
the main problem, he claimed, was the continuing attacks by Tebus. They had to return to their positions, he insisted. There could be no confidence in negotiations while the violations continued.

Also according to him, the Amazigh mediators had proposed a month-long ceasefire during which the joint committee would work out terms for a permanent peace, including the withdrawal of armed forces from the area. Describing the Amazigh proposals as "excellent" and saying they could work, Abdul Karim claimed that the Tebus had rejected a truce longer than 10 days.

Nonetheless, there would now be a further meeting to overcome the problem, he said.

Heavy fighting west of Tripoli spreads toward capital, cuts coast road
[Libya Herald] Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
which broke out this afternoon near Sabratha between local revolutionaries backed by Western Libya Shield
...a conglomerate of pro-Islamist militias deployed across Libya. It reports to the Libyan defense ministry and is organized like a real army unit. Its commander used to head a Benghazi brigade called Free Libya Martyrs...
fighters and a Libyan National Army (LNA) Supported Forces unit, intensified during the evening and triggered other festivities in Sayad, west of Janzour. The coast road was reported to be closed.

Involving heavy weapons, the fighting in Sayed is said to be between Warshefana forces and the Fursan Janzour brigade, part of the revolutionaries' alliance supporting the General National Congress in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
.

Both sets of festivities have, however, been condemned by Colonel Idris Madi, the head of the LNA's Tripoli (formerly Western) Operations Room based in Zintan. In a statement, he said that what was happening had not been launched by the LNA, was an illegal operation and the responsibility of those involved.

Earlier there were unconfirmed reports that four members of the Supported Forces unit, fighting in an area known as Ras Yusuf between Sabratha and Ajilat, had been captured alive by the revolutionaries but were then taken to Sabratha and shot.

For their part the Supported Forces, many of them from Ajilat, claim to have killed one of the revolutionaries and captured another, said to be from Sorman.

Reinforcements have been sent to the revolutionaries from Zawia, from the Furqan brigade, one of a number of local Islamist brigades controlled by Abu Obeida Al-Zawi. It is further reported that fighters from Sabratha, Zawia and Sorman who last week were said to have moved in to "protect" the Mellitah gas complex near Zuwara have gone to join the fight.

In an unrelated development on Tuesday night but equally indicative of the lack of LNA control over local forces, there was fighting between a Supported Forces unit and LNA military police on the road between Al-Assa and Rigdaleen in the Jebel Nafusa. The skirmishes, said to have involved the Warshfana's Al-Keba brigade led by Mohammed Eshtewi, did not result in any casualties.

It is the first time that there have been festivities in the region between units supposedly under the control of the western Libya operations room based in Zintan and supporting the House of Representatives in Tobruk.

Bomb Hits near Libya Prison Holding Former Gaddafi Officials
[ALMANAR.LB] A boom-mobile went kaboom! near a prison in the Libyan capital where former officials of Muammar Gaddhafi's regime, including the dictator's playboy son, are being held, an official said.

"A boom-mobile went kaboom! close to the Al-Habda al-Khadra prison, where there is also an interior ministry brigade headquarters," prison front man Othman al-Ghellani told AFP.

"The car blew up around 150 meters (yards) from the prison's perimeter wall," he said.

"Initial investigations found that a woman parked the car there under the pretext of wanting to visit an inmate."

Ghellani said no one was hurt in the blast, which damaged two nearby cars.

last year and is opposed to the internationally recognized government which is based in the east.

The jail is currently home to several former Qadaffy henchmen, many of whom have already been sentenced to death or to life imprisonment for crimes committed during the longtime autocrat's decades-long rule.

His son Saadi is being held there. The former Libyan football team captain was extradited to Libya from Niger in March 2014 and is due back in court on Monday.

Last year, a video emerged appearing to show officials and guards at the prison ill-treating several detainees, including Saadi.

#1  In February 2014 a committee of senior members of Yemen's political parties, and chaired by Yemen President Mansur Hadi, agreed to recreate a perpetually fractious Yemen into a federation of six regions. The participants thus rejected a two state solution -- a North and South -- the same situation that existed from 1967-1990 and was cause of much bloodshed. One region created was devoted to the Shiite Houthi minority. The meeting and subsequent agreement were sponsored by the Gulf states and the UN.
However, the Houthi soon broke the cease-fire and must now face the consequence. Despite Iranian support the Houthi homeland is being bombed, and the Saudis will not quit until the region returns to the 12th century and the Shiite community is decimated.

Turkish army kills around 100 terrorists: military sources
[Hurriyet Daily News] A massive military operation after a deadly terrorist attack that killed 16 troops on Sept. 6 resulted in the deaths of around 100 Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) myrmidons, the Anadolu Agency reported on Sept. 9, citing military sources.

Turkish Air and Land Forces conducted a coordinated operation on the group that perpetrated the deadly Daglica attack and their hideouts since Sept. 6, the report said, adding that special forces also joined the campaign.

In a bid to neutralize fleeing terrorists, two special forces teams and eight gendarmerie units composed of 150 security personnel crossed into the northern Iraq, the Agency said. Terrorists have been hit by aerial bombings while their camps in the Kandil Mountain and in northern Iraq have also been severely bombed.

HDP offices violently attacked in several anti-terrorism protests
[Hurriyet Daily News] Nationwide demonstrations have been held in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

to protest recent terrorist acts, following calls from far-right organizations, while several of them turned violent on Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) buildings in many cities, including Ankara.

The HDP headquarters in Turkey's capital of Ankara as well as local party buildings across the country have been attacked in demonstrations, protesting the killings of security personnel in outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacks in the country's east and southeast.

Thousands of protesters waving Turkish flags, including Nationalist Movement Party Deputy Group Chair Oktay Vural, Idealist Hearths Head Olcay Kilavuz and MHP Ankara Provincial Head Baki Cetinkaya, staged a demonstration in Ankara on Sept. 8 upon a call for protest by Idealist Hearths ("Ãœlku Ocaklari" in Turkish), a far-right organization with purportedly close links to the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Kilavuz said large numbers of coppers and soldiers had been killed in a spate of "cowardly attacks" since July 20, a markedly momentous date in recent Turkish history with a deadly kaboom, which the Islamic State

of Iraq and the Levent (ISIL) grabbed credit for, that left dozens dead and over 100 others injured in the southeastern town of Suruc.

Around 50 protesters marched toward Ankara's HDP headquarters to enter the building, but faced a police barricade at the entry and exit of the street where the headquarters is located.

Several protesters who escaped the barricade hurled stones at the building, smashed the HDP banner at its entry and hoisted a Turkish flag on HDP's flag pole after coppers fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

In protests staged in the central Anatolian province of Kirsehir, four workplaces owned by Kurdish people were burnt and 13 offices owned by Kurds were smashed. Some 30 suspects were detained for violent acts in the central Turkish city.

In a march staged in the northwestern province of Balikesir in protest against attacks on soldiers in the eastern province of Igdir and the southeastern province of Hakkari, a large number of protesters hurled stones at HDP's building in Balikesir's Burhaniye district, smashing the building's windows. A police officer was injured in the incident.

'US beefing up protection for Sinai peacekeepers,' Pentagon official tells AP
[AlAhram] The US is sending dozens of additional troops and support equipment to improve protection for US peacekeepers in the northern Sinai Peninsula in the aftermath of a roadside kaboom last week that maimed four US soldiers, defense officials said Wednesday.

The officials said at least 75 additional troops are being deployed, including a light-infantry platoon and a surgical team, as well as surveillance equipment and other assets designed to beef up the peacekeepers' self-protection.

The officials were not authorized to discuss the details publicly and so spoke on condition of anonymity. They said plans for additional security measures were in the works before last week's attack, reflecting growing US concern about security for US members of what is formally known as the Multinational Force and Observers.

The US has about 720 soldiers in the Sinai as part of the multinational force that has continually monitored compliance with the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. The centerpiece of the US group is the 1st Squadron, 112th Cavalry Regiment of the Texas Army National Guard, which has been operating there since early this year.

Four US soldiers and two Fijians with the Multinational Force and Observers' peacekeeping mission were maimed last Thursday when their vehicles were hit by a roadside kaboom during a routine patrol near their base in the town of el-Gorah.

The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported in August that the B.O. regime was quietly reviewing the future of America's role in the Sinai. Options ranged from beefing up the US troops' protection to pulling them out altogether. One defense official said Wednesday that there is currently no active plan to pull out of the mission but that US officials have been discussing force protection measures since mid-August with the Israeli and Egyptian governments.

Asked Tuesday about the US review, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said the US supports the role of the Multinational Force and Observers, or MFO.

"We are concerned over security conditions in that area of the northeastern Sinai where Egyptian security forces as well as civilian and military elements of the MFO, including US military forces stationed at the MFO north camp, are exposed to potential risk," Cook said.

"And in light of the security situation there, we are, again, considering additional measures to bolster their protection going forward, taking steps to try and enhance their protection."

#1  This is crazy! The rationale for a MFO no longer exists because the territorial divisions of the Sinai as envisioned in the Camp David accords no longer exist. The Sinai has been remilitarized yet Israel and Egypt now work together. (And Israel is reopening its embassy in Cairo.) The MFO is an expensive operation and the money the US government now spends would be better employed in the creation of a strong Egypt-Israel terrorist deterrent in the Sinai.

Bomb-making materials found at abandoned Abu Sayyaf lair
[InterAksyon] Philippine security forces pursuing Abu Sayyaf militants have discovered a house used as temporary shelter by the insurgent group in the hinterlands of Sulu.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado said troops uncovered the site Wednesday morning in Barangay Latih, Patikul. He said soldiers were scouring the area when they uncovered a "freshly abandoned" temporary harbor site "of the fleeing ASG members."

Arrojado said soldiers have recovered medical supplies used by the injured Abu Sayyaf militants in a recent clash with government forces. He said the troops also recovered bomb-making components, mobile phones, a radio transceiver, police and military uniforms, hammock, laminated sacks and a box of dried fish.

Earlier, Arrojado said that 15 Abu Sayyaf militants were reported to have been injured in heavy fighting in Mount Awak on August 28. He said among the injured were Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders Roger Samlahun and Hatib Hajan Sawalaan.

During the fighting, the troops pounded Abu Sayyaf positions with mortar shells that forced them to flee in different directions.

Al-Nusra in Syria Takes Last Regime Base in Idlib
[AnNahar] Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate and its allies seized the last regime-held military base in northwestern Idlib province on Wednesday, in the latest setback for Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
's forces.

Al-Nusra Front and a coalition of mostly Islamist groups captured the Abu Duhur military airport after a siege that lasted two years, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

"After a violent attack that had been taking place since Monday, Al-Nusra Front and some Islamist factions control all of the Abu Duhur military airport," the Britannia-based Observatory said.

The attacking force began to enter the base on Tuesday night.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the forces appeared to have taken advantage of a massive sandstorm that blanketed much of the Middle East and made it difficult for regime aircraft to carry out strikes.

"The army is no longer present in Idlib province," he added, saying that the soldiers who had been defending the base withdrew towards Aleppo province in the east.

"The regime's only presence left in the province is in the Shiite villages of Fuaa and Kafraya," which are besieged by rebels and are being defended by pro-regime militias and Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
, not the army.

Syrian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
effectively acknowledged the loss, saying troops had left the base.

"After fierce fighting at the Abu Duhur airport, the army, which defended the airport with great courage under total siege for more than two years, abandoned their positions," the broadcaster said.

Abu Duhur has long been a target for opposition forces in the northwestern province.

- Suicide bombers on bikes -
Rebel forces had seized the entrance to the airport and several positions on its outskirts in late August in an advance that began with jacket wallahs on cycle of violences.

The airport's capture is the latest success for a coalition of Islamist and jihadist forces, including Al-Nusra, that calls itself the "Army of Conquest".

They first shot to prominence with the swift overrunning of Idlib's placid provincial capital in March.

They have since extended their gains throughout the province, seizing a string of strategic towns and even pushing into neighbouring Hama province, where they are fighting to capture the Sahl al-Ghab area.

With Abu Duhur's fall, the regime's only remaining presence in Idlib is in Fuaa and Kafraya.

Both are now completely surrounded by rebel forces, who have fired hundreds of rockets at the Shiite-majority areas.

The loss is the latest setback for Assad's forces, which the embattled president acknowledged in July were suffering from "fatigue".

"There is a lack of human resources" in the army, Assad said in the remarks after a string of defeats in Idlib province and elsewhere.

"The problem facing the military is not related to planning but to fatigue."

Assad's regime has been at war with different rebel groups for the past four years, in a conflict that has so far killed at least 240,000 people.

The conflict began with anti-government protests but descended into a war after a regime crackdown on dissent.

It has evolved into a complex multi-front battle involving rebels, jihadists, the regime, Kurds and a U.S.-led coalition that is carrying out air strikes against the Islamic State

Sources: Russian troops join war in Syria
[Reuters] Russian forces have begun participating in military operations in support of government troops in Syria, three Lebanese sources said on Wednesday. The sources gave the most forthright account yet from the region, though one of the sources said the number of Russians involved so far was small.

Two of the Lebanese sources said the Russians were establishing two bases in Syria, one near the coast and one further inland which would be a base of operations. He said, "The Russians are no longer just advisors. The Russians have decided to join the war against terrorism."

US officials said Russia has recently sent two tank landing ships and additional cargo aircraft to Syria and deployed a small number of naval infantry forces. The officials said Russia's intent was not clear. One suggested the focus may be on preparing an airfield near the port city of Latakia, an Assad stronghold. The officials have not ruled out the possibility that Russia may want to use the airfield for air combat missions.

Secretary of State John Kerry spoke to his Russian counterpart for the second time in four days to express concern over such reports, warning that it could fan more violence. The White House said it was closely monitoring the situation.

Russia has declined to comment on the scale and scope of its military presence. Damascus has denied Russians were involved in combat, but a Syrian official said the presence of experts had increased in the past year.

Germany's foreign minister warned Russia against increased military intervention, saying the Iran nuclear deal and new UN initiatives offered a starting point for a political solution to the war.
An Nahar adds:
At least three Russian military transport planes have landed in Syria in recent days, U.S. officials said Tuesday. The aircraft have landed at the airport in Latakia on Syria's Mediterranean coast over the past several days, U.S. officials told Agence La Belle France Presse on condition of anonymity. Two of the aircraft were giant Antonov-124 Condor planes and a third was a passenger flight, one of the officials said.

The Russians have installed modular housing units -- enough for "hundreds" of people -- at the airport, as well as portable air traffic control equipment, the official noted.

"All of this seems to be suggesting that Russia is planning to do some sort of forward air-operating hub out of this airfield," the official said.

Bulgaria has refused permission for Russian aircraft to enter its airspace, and Greece said Tuesday that Washington had asked it to also deny Russian overflights.

#4  Russia would put boots on the ground i reckon. Russia is morphing into a theocratic state under Putin. His power base is the Russian orthodox church. While the true enemy of Islamic state (and all religious nutbaggery) is secularism the Church comes second what with the crucifixion and beheading of Christians.

Putin being the strongarm thug he is can be quite decisive. Being militaristic helps shore up his popularity among the ordinary russians whose economy has been stolen by that kleptocrat and his oligarch mates.

it thus makes sense for Vlad the Impaler to go and take a swing.

It would make him wildly popular. I would even be tempted to admire him stamping on that nasty IS.

but the same what goes for china goes for him. it might be tempting to like it but the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.

we dont really want an emboldened russia or china into foreign interventions and territorial mergers and acquisitions
