Kunduz Hospital Blasted by Airstrike
How do we manage to do things like this?

At least 19 people were killed when a hospital run by Doctors Without Borders in Kunduz was badly damaged early Saturday after being hit by what appears to have been an American airstrike, sparking international outrage. (Justifiable, it would appear.)

The United States military, in a statement, confirmed an airstrike at 2:15 a.m., saying that it had been targeting individuals "who were threatening the force" and that "there may have been collateral damage to a nearby medical facility.

The strike will bring renewed pressure on the United States, which has been playing an increasingly active role in Afghanistan amid a Taliban resurgence, particularly in the northern province of Kunduz, but has long been criticized for causing civilian casualties from the air.
Without the air support the Afghan forces are screwed. Perhaps the FACs (whoever they are--and I'm guessing Afghans) should be more careful calling in the coordinates.

#3  How do you think that the doc's were able to work while surrounded by terrorist who reject western medicine? One hypothesis: They agreed to be human shields. If true then that was a poor choice.

I will be interested in learning the details about what actually happened.

#4  I'm guessing the airstrike was next door and the blast set fire to one of the hospital buildings. There is no shortage of easily combustible items in a hospital.

From the photos I saw, the fire gutted building had a lot shrapnel damage to the exterior wall, but no blasted outward roof or walls.

Over 300 Insurgents Killed, Including Foreigners, In Kunduz Battle
[Tolo News] More than 300 myrmidons, including foreign nationals, have been killed in the Kunduz battle, which is being led by foreign turbans, according to local officials.

The Police Chief of Kunduz confirmed the casualties and said that Arabs, Chechens and Pak faceless myrmidons were leading the war in Kunduz -- which fell to the Taliban on Monday.

TOLOnews journalist Sharif Amiri -- who is the first journalist to make his way to Kunduz city -- reports that still some parts of the city are being controlled by the Taliban.

He said the citizens cannot move freely in the city as there are huge threats of Taliban counterattacks.

According to Sharif, the Arclight airstrikes by the foreign troops have proved helpful for the Afghan forces in eliminating the myrmidons.

He said however that families who have been trapped in their homes are facing food shortages.

The Kunduz city center collapsed into the hands of the Taliban after hundreds of myrmidons, armed with light and heavy weapons, launched a well-planned and coordinated attack on the city on Monday.

After the city fell to Taliban, the faceless myrmidons stormed the government facilities and also attacked the prison, freeing all 600 inmates, including 110 Taliban members.

The troops inside the city are battling the holy warriors and have retaken several parts of the city. But the reinforcement troops have still not been able to make their way to the city as the highways are blocked by the Taliban.

Taliban Death Squads Terrorize Kunduz Residents
[Tolo News] Mass murder, gang rapes and house-to-house searches by Taliban death squads are just some of the harrowing civilian testimonies emerging from Kunduz city, Amnesia Amnesty International reported on Friday.

The organization has spoken to numerous people, the majority of them women, who have fled Kunduz since Monday, when the Taliban launched an assault on the city.

Women human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
defenders from Kunduz spoke of a "hit list" being used by the Taliban to track down activists and others, and described how fighters had raped and killed numerous civilians.

"The harrowing accounts we've received paint a picture of a reign of terror during the Taliban's brutal capture of Kunduz this week. The multiple credible reports of killings, rapes and other horrors meted out against the city's residents must prompt the Afghan authorities to do more now to protect civilians, in particular in areas where more fighting appears imminent," said Horia Mosadiq, Afghanistan Researcher at Amnesia Amnesty International.

Speaking to TOLOnews, Sad Mukhtar head of Kunduz public health said that up to Thursday night about 372 maimed civilians were admitted to hospitals in the city. He said more than 50 civilians have so far died.

"Every moment the numbers of casualties are increasing and our main concern is shortage of medicines," Mukhtar said.

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
no exact figures of military casualties have been reported.

The Taliban is also still carrying out a looting spree and in the past few days have destroyed three local radio stations in the city.

Police are however also attributing looting to gangs of locals.

Sporadic festivities are also ongoing in the city between Lions of Islam and security forces in various parts of the city as Afghan troops try to retake full control of the embattled city.

Reports indicate that due to the critical security situation there are hundreds of injured civilians inside their homes that can't get to hospitals for treatment.

Scores of Kunduz residents meanwhile told TOLOnews of their concerns and described scenes of desperation -- with no power, no water and no food.

Some residents said that children are also dying.

Reports emerged on Friday of a father who had left the safety of his house to find food for his family but was killed by Taliban Death Eaters.

Mujahid, the group's front man wrote in a twitter post this morning that the four-engine aircraft was shot down by 'Mujahideen' last night.

"Based on credible information 15 invading forces and several puppet troops were killed." another tweet from Mujahid stated.

US officials previously said that a C-130 crashed in Jalalabad shortly after midnight on Friday morning killing 11 people on board.

Earlier reports suggested that 12 people were killed.

The victims reportedly included five contracted civilians as well as the U.S. service members.

No specific cause for the crash has immediately come up but Col. Brian Tribus a US military front man said that there was no hostile activity in the area by the time the incident happened.

The C-130 Hercules, a four-engine turboprop plane, has been a workhorse of US's operations in Afghanistan, carrying passengers or cargo.

Clashes underway in Baharak after the fall of Wardoj district
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Clashes between the Afghan cops and the Talibs are underway in Baharak district of northeastern Badakhshan province.

Earlier reports suggested that the Talibs have seized control of Baharak district after the fall of Wardoj district.

Local residents earlier said the forces of Evil entered Baharak district this afternoon through Wardoj district.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the acting provincial governor Shahwaliullah Adeeb said the Afghan cops are still in control of Bahrak and are responding to Taliban attack.

He said Taliban's shadow governor for Badakhshan was killed along with his twenty forces of Evil in an Arclight airstrike.

This comes as the Talibs captured Wardoj district on Thursday with earlier reports suggesting of heavy festivities in the outskirts of Baharak district.

Baharak district is located about 30 km south-east of Fayzabad the lovely provincial capital of northeastern Badakhshan province.

The insurgency activities by the Talibs have been rampant during the recent days which led to the fall of the strategic Kunduz city late on Monday.

Sporadic festivities are still repoted in Kunduz despite the Afghan cops seized control of Kunduz city from the Talibs on Thursday.

Four jacket wallahs detonated bombs in the city's densely populated Sajeri area at about 7:30pm local time Thursday, army front man Col. Sani Usman said.

"There were kabooms at Sajeri, not far from Maiduguri's Ajilari Railway Crossing," he said.

"It has been confirmed that 14 people bit the dust, including the bombers, while 39 others were maimed," Usman said in a statement.

He said three of the blasts had occurred in the same area, while a fourth went off outside a local mosque, killing a number of Moslem worshipers.

Tunde Shotomi, head of security for government-run hospitals in the capital, told Anadolu Agency that the corpse count had risen to 15, going on to suggest that the number could rise further.

The kabooms in Maiduguri occurred near the scene of a previous attack on Sept. 21 that killed 54 people.

In an address to the nation delivered Thursday, President Mohammadu Buhari reiterated his vow to end the country's six-year Boko Haram insurgency.

Arabia
Saudi-US Warships Fail to Approach Bab al-Mandeb, more Soldiers Hunted in Jizan
[ALMANAR.LB] A large number of Saudi officers and soldiers have been killed in the Yemeni army's operations in Jizan and Najran regions, well-informed military sources announced on Friday.

"Several Saudi military men were killed in the Yemeni army and Popular Committees' operations in the city of Najran," the sources close to the Committees said.

Meantime, reports from Jizan told that several Saudi soldiers and officers were also killed in heavy festivities in the place.

Also on Friday, the Yemeni military foiled attempts by US-Saudi aggression warships to approach the Yemeni shores in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait area under heavy hostile aerial bombardment and shelling.

The Yemeni army and Popular Committees units stationed in the Strait clashed with the attacking forces by appropriate weapons and forced them to retreat.

A source from the Yemeni military said the army and the Committees are deployed at fixed points in the Straits and its environs, and that the fire will be on the lookout for any new aggressive attempts toward the Bab al-Mandab.

"Aggressors will be a heavy price," he said.

Earlier on Thursday, a military source said that at least 55 troops of the Saudi-led coalition were killed or maimed in the Yemeni army's operations in the province of Marib.

The military source said that, in addition to the killing and wounding of nearly 55 soldiers of the Saudi army and its allies by the Yemeni army, over eight military and 5 armored vehicles of the Saudi-led coalition were destroyed in the vicinity Al-Balaq, That Al-Ra' and Marbat Al-Dam in Ma'rib during the past few hours.

On Monday, Yemen's Ansarullah fighters conducted retaliatory attacks on Saudi positions in the region of Jizan.

The Yemeni forces fired a barrage of rockets at a military base in the Saudi region of Jizan.

Three Saudi armored vehicles were also destroyed in another attack in Jizan.

Meanwhile,
...back at the secret hideout, Scarface Al sneeringly put his proposition to little Nell...
reports said that the Yemeni national military had killed and injured dozens of pro-Saudi Lion of Islams, and destroyed ten vehicles belonging to them in the province of Marib.

Yemeni loyalists control all of key strait
[AlArabiya]. Government forces in Yemen now control the key Bab al-Mandab Strait through which much of the world's maritime traffic passes after retaking it from Shiite rebels, a general said Friday.

"The Bab al-Mandab Strait is now under the total control of our troops," General Turki Ahmed told AFP.

Ahmed was one of the commanders of an offensive that Thursday seized the island of Mayyun (Perim) between the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

The narrow waterway, which separates Yemen from Djibouti only some 20 miles (32 kilometers) away, funnels shipping to and from the Suez Canal, which lies at the north end of the Red Sea.

President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and his government returned to Aden last month following six months in exile, after loyalist forces regained control of the port city and four other southern provinces from militias.

The Iran-backed Houthi militia group still controls the capital and northern provinces near the border with Saudi Arabia.

On Thursday, troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition seized Bab al-Mandab and Dhubab in the southern province of Taez near the strait, loyalist military official Abedrabbo al-Mihwali told AFP.

The strait had been in the hands of Houthis and their allies, units still loyal to ousted former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, since March.

Bab al-Mandab was "brought under our control with the help of coalition forces, who provided ground, naval and air support," General Ahmed said.

"The Houthis and their allies retreated to Mokha," a Red Sea port some 20 kilometers (12 miles) further north.

"We are awaiting orders from the political leadership and President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi for the next move in the offensive," Ahmed added.

The attack took place "in response to rebel troop movements" towards Aden and the four other recaptured southern provinces, one source said.

Yemen's temporary capital Aden "was targeted on Thursday by a Scud missile which hit a suburb west of the city," a source said.

The Houthis had admitted losing control of the strategic strait.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, self-described "Iranian lackeypresident of the High Committee of the Revolution," sent a message to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon expressing "surprise" at Thursday's attack "on Mayyun island and areas close to the Bab al-Mandab Strait."

He viewed the assault as "a grave and irresponsible escalation," and said it threatened "the security of international maritime navigation," according to the text of the message released by the rebel-controlled Saba news agency.
Like Iran has any interest whatsoever in protecting the security of international maritime navigation.
In Aden, government spokesman Rajedh Badi outlined to AFP what could happen next.

"The next step for our forces will be to retake all of the coast along the Red Sea, including Mokha and Hodeida," he said.

Britain
UK teen jailed for life over Anzac terror plot
[AA.TR] A fifteen-year-old British boy has been given a life sentence for his role in plotting a terror attack in Australia.

Together with an accomplice in Australia, the teenager worked as an "organizer and adviser" in a scheme to murder police offices in Melbourne by beheading them.

The boy, a practicing Moslem from Blackburn in northern England, was found guilty after being tried at a court in Manchester and was sentenced on Friday. He will serve a minimum of five years.

He remains anonymous because of his age.

The judge said it was "chilling" that someone so young could be so radicalized that he was prepared to see people die. He ordered that the teenager remains in prison until he is considered no longer dangerous.

"Thanks to the intervention of the police in this country and in Australia, that attack and the deaths which were intended to follow never happened," he said.

The attack in Melbourne would have allegedly been carried out by his 18-year-old accomplice Sevdet Besim, an Australian national, during Anzac Day, when the country marks the First World War battle in Gelibolu (Gallipoli), The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
. This year's event marked the battle's hundredth anniversary.

During his trial it emerged that the boy found an online holy warrior community using his first smartphone. He attracted tens of thousands of followers through a Twitter profile promoting violence.

The court heard he was put into contact with Besim by a Daesh recruiter.

Justice Saunders said the boy had made "considerable progress" at a detention center, where he is on a U.K. government program designed "to de-radicalize him".

But the judge continued: "There is no material before me from which blame should be attributed to anyone, except those murderous Moslems who were prepared to use the internet to encourage extreme views in a boy of 14 and then use him to carry out terrorist acts."

In a statement after the sentencing, local police said there was no suggestion the boy was looking to target his local community in the U.K.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Mole said: "People will understandably be shocked by the age of the boy. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
this should not detract from the horror of what he was planning. It is also a clear message that you will face prosecution, no matter how old you are."

The boy's family said in a statement issued through their solicitor that they were "shocked and devastated" at the child's arrest. The family said they had been unaware of his activities.

2 Dead after Australian Police Station attacked by 15 year old Radicalised Youth
[DailyMail] The shooter at the centre of the Parramatta police HQ attack was a 15-year-old boy from a middle eastern background. The 'radicalised' youth bumped off a civilian police IT expert at close range before being killed by a police officer. En route to the killing the youth, originally from Iran, had visited Parramatta Mosque, The Daily Telegraph reported. Witnesses of the attack on Friday afternoon said after the killing, the teen paraded in front of the cop shoppe with his weapon chanting 'Allah, Allah', it was reported.

Police were searching for the killer's family, who were believed to have left the area. He carried no identification and it was believed his brother contacted police with his identity, the Daily Telegraph reported. The lone gunman rubbed out a civilian police IT expert at close range outside the Parramatta police headquarters in a targeted attack on Friday which has been described as a 'brutal' and 'callous murder'. The assailant, dressed all in black, fired a number of shots at special constables guarding the NSW Police station in Sydney, before he was bumped off and killed by one of the officers.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the civilian employee was 'simply leaving work' when he was shot in the back of the head by the gunman who was wearing 'dark trousers and a flowing top'. On Friday he refused to be drawn on whether the double shooting was terror-related, but admitted that officers from within the counter-terrorism command were working alongside the homicide squad. The commissioner revealed a number of warnings had been sent round to police in the past two years reminding them to be 'vigilant' about attacks, but assured that the people of NSW were 'safe'.

Spain Court Sentences 11 to Jail over Sending Suicide Bombers to Syria

of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) that recruited gunnies for suicide kabooms in Syria.

The men were all handed sentences of between 10 and 12 years after the judges found them guilty of sending "numerous jihadists to Syria", several of whom died in suicide kabooms, a statement from Madrid's National Court said.

Based in Spain's North African enclave Ceuta, they sent at least 28 people to Syria between April 2012 and June 2013, when they were tossed in the slammer

, the court said.

At least eight of their recruits bit the dust in "terrorist acts... in which hundreds of people died".

The court handed 12-year sentences to Karim Abdeselam Mohammed and Ismail Abdellatif Al-Lal both of whom were convicted of leading a "terrorist organization." The others were each sentenced to 10 years of prison after being convicted of belonging to the gang.

The court said the sentences were justified by "the radicalization and danger posed by them all and the seriousness of the actions carried out by the cell that they voluntarily joined".

More than 100 people from Spain are suspected of having joined terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria and authorities fear they may return to launch attacks.

In a major crackdown on terrorist cells, including those operating online, Spanish police have arrested scores of suspected recruiters in recent years.

Jordan lawmaker's son Iraq suicide bomber
A Jordanian parliamentarian's son died carrying out a suicide attack claimed by Daesh militant group in Iraq this week, Jordanian media said Friday. Independent legislator Mazen Al Dhalaein was quoted as telling the Khaberni website that his son, Mohammed, who went by the name of Abu Baraa, had died in Iraq.

He said he learned of his son's death after seeing his photo on social media accounts linked to Daesh. Dhalaein said his 23-year-old son had been studying medicine in Ukraine before deciding to join Daesh this summer, travelling to Iraq through Turkey and Syria.

"He considered me and his mother to be apostates and was trying to convince us to join Daesh," he added.

The MP said he had last heard from Mohammed in August when he sent a message that he "had been signed up for a suicide attack soon".

In a statement posted on Twitter on Wednesday, Daesh claimed a triple car bombing on the northern outskirts of Ramadi, a city west of Baghdad under Daesh control since May. Iraqi military sources confirmed suicide attacks in the area Tuesday but were unable to identify the bombers.

"Three suicide car bombs targeted Iraqi security forces in their progress in Al Jaraishi", an army colonel told AFP. "The security forces repelled the attacks using Russian-made Kornet missiles."

Musa Abdullat, a leading Jordanian lawyer for 'Islamist' groups, told AFP the legislator's son was killed Tuesday in an attack on the Iraqi army.

Up to 4,000 Jordanians are members of 'jihad' groups in Iraq and neighbouring Syria, Abdullat said.

"Eighty percent of them have joined Daesh," he said, adding that 420 Jordanians had been killed in Iraq and Syria since 2011.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russian Air Force targets ISIS targets near Raqqa leaving at least 12 militants dead
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Russian warplanes carried out Arclight airstrikes on Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terror group's main Syrian stronghold.

At least 12 fanatics of the terror group were killed in the air raids carried out in Raqqa city.

According to Russia's defense ministry a training camp of the terror group was targeted near the village of Maadan Jadid, 45 miles east of Raqqa city and a camouflaged command post at Kasrat Faraj southwest of the city.

The training camp and command post were struck with a precision strike launched form an altitude of over 5,000 meters, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, the ministry front man, said the Arclight airstrike was one of a dozen conducted by Russia in Syria on Thursday during 18 sorties.

"The targeting systems of those planes allows for hitting ground targets with absolute precision, which was proven yesterday during combat missions targeting ISIS infrastructure," hKnoashkenkov quoted by Russia Today said. "We can use this type of aircraft to deliver strikes anywhere in Syria."

Overnight, the Russian Air Force conducted 10 sorties and hit seven targets in Syria, Konashenkov said. Over the 24 hours the planes bombed a field camp in Aleppo province, a logistics center in Idlib province and a command point at a fortified facility in Hama province.

In the meantime, the ISIS Death Eaters posted a tweet warning 'Death to Putin: We are coming #soon' with a picture of Moscow's St Basil's Cathedral in flames, according to the SITE intelligence group.

#4  Videos tell a different story. While some targets may be attacked with LBGs, the vast majority of released videos (both airborne and on the ground) show 2-6 dumb bombs dropped from medium altitude from a straight and level bomb run.

#6  I see no evidence from the video of iron bombs. In the first video I saw FAE bombs, which the Rooshuns are using, the second cut footage and the last a video of the aftermath of an impact.

Not saying they are not using them, but I am saying your video fails to show it.
Posted by: badanov || 10/03/2015 14:18 Comments || Top||

#7  You see multiple impacts/smoke towers when they show impact. Not in all the videos released by the Russians, but most. There is no reason to release more than one LGB at a time it and risks bomb fratricide. Also notice the bracketing of targets w/o actually hitting them.

As far as the FAE fireball shown, it obscures whether one or multiple are dropped. It also obscures how close/far to the target it may have hit.

the second cut footage and the last a video of the aftermath of an impact.

They both show at least 2 sequential bomb impacts in an urban area. No reason to use LBGs that way. Lots of reasons if dumb bombs.

Syria Air Campaign Raises Questions About Russian Capabilities

Russia’s days-old air campaign in Syria is giving U.S. officials and analysts their first in-depth look at Russian capabilities in decades, and it has some wondering whether Russia is able to effectively use its most advanced weapons.

“You can actually tell that the ammunition they’re using — while I wouldn’t call it older, necessarily — they are a type of dumb ammunition,” said Sim Tack, director of analytical support at Stratfor, a U.S.-based global intelligence company.

#10  I think a more practical reason is the Russians don't have many guided weapons. Could you imagine the uproar if a western nation used dumb bombs in an urban area.

A Look At Russia's Version Of The A-10

From the link:
"The Russian air force will use the Frogfoots to support the Assad regime in the same way the USAF is using the A-10 Warthog to support the Iraqi government," one veteran U.S. Air Force aviator told me. Another senior Air Force official agreed. "Frogfoots are the best air-to-ground platform for this type of fight for sure."

WNU editor: There are only a dozen of these planes in Syria .... so I doubt that they can have a significant impact. in the short term .... but I suspect that in certain key ground battles and/or in concentrated operations .... they will shift the battle in favour of the Syrian regime.
