Dissident commanders meet to choose rival Afghan Taliban leader
[DAWN] Weeks after the Afghan Taliban's biggest battlefield success since 2001, dissident commanders unhappy with their new leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor are meeting to choose a rival, they told Rooters on Tuesday.

Analysts say the recent brief occupation of the northern city of Kunduz has cemented Mansoor's power, boosting his reputation among foot soldiers and causing the US government and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
to slow plans for withdrawing their troops.

But in the opaque manoeuvring around the Taliban leadership, it is unclear whether the anti-Mansoor faction will seek to challenge him on the battlefield, how many fighters they control or how much money they have.

A leadership battle within the Taliban could create space for Death Eaters loyal to the self-styled Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) to expand their foothold in the region, and could discourage Mansoor from resuming Pakistain-backed peace talks with the Afghan government.

Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
is pushing for a negotiated settlement to the 14-year insurgency, which has escalated markedly since tens of thousands of NATO combat troops withdrew ahead of an end-2014 deadline.

The two sides held inaugural talks in Pakistain in July, but many commanders, including prominent dissident Mullah Abdul Qayum Zakir, opposed the process. It has since stalled.

Mullah Abdul Manan Niazi, a front man for the anti-Mansoor faction, said a new leader would be chosen within days.

"There is one agenda, and that's to choose the new emir (leader) unanimously and get rid of Mullah Mansoor," he said.

Niazi said the dissident commanders would not accept Mansour despite the Taliban's brief occupation of Kunduz earlier this month, their most important military success since the US-led invasion toppled the Taliban government in 2001.

Just weeks after the peace talks, Mansoor was hastily appointed head of the Afghan Taliban when Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
's intelligence agency leaked news that Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
, the reclusive one-eyed founder of the Taliban, had been dead for more than two years.

During that time, Mansoor issued statements in Omar's name, a subterfuge he said was necessary to unify the insurgency. But many commanders were furious over the deception and refused to accept him.

A front man for Mansoor was not immediately available for comment.
"I can say no more!"

20 Taliban killed in U.S. airstrike, clashes with security forces in Logar
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] 20 Talibs were killed in a U.S. Arclight airstrike and raids of Afghan forces in Kharwar District of central Pashtun-infested Logar province, south of Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
, last night.

Police Chief of Kharwar District says that several villages have been cleared of the faceless myrmidons as the result of the military operation by Afghan forces backed by Arclight airstrikes.

A large number of weapons and ammunition was also seized by security forces during the operation, Brigadier General Dawoud Ahmadi said.

This comes as Taliban have ramped up their deadly campaign across the country.

A suicide boom-mobile kaboom for which Taliban were blamed left 14 civilians maimed, some of them critical, in the capital of this province last month.

The Vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) exploded when Pul-e-Alam City was crowded with people.

Algerian Troops Kill Three Islamist Gunmen
[AnNahar] Algerian soldiers killed three Islamist gunnies on Tuesday during a sweep of a region east of the capital where al-Qaeda has a presence, the defense ministry said.

They were killed during the search operation in Baghlia, near corpse-littered Boumerdes, where bandidos forces of Evil from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) have positions, a statement said.

corpse-littered Boumerdes is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Algiers.

During the operation, the army seized three Kalashnikov assault rifles as well as ammunition and nine cellphones, the defense ministry added.

Armed Islamist groups operate in Algeria despite the adoption in 2005 of a peace and reconciliation charter to turn the page on a war in the 1990s between the government and Islamists that killed 200,000 people.

In July, at least nine soldiers were killed in an ambush southwest of Algiers that was claimed by AQIM.

According to the defense ministry, more than 60 Islamists have been killed this year.

Mauritania to send ground boots to Yemen
Some 500 Mauritanian military forces are gearing up to join Saudi Arabia–led military coalition in Yemen to combat Houthi rebels, military sources said.
If you can't send the Arabs to Mauritania, bring Mauritania to the Arabs...
“Soldiers of the armed forces who are ready to be sent to Saudi Arabia, completed over the past weeks their military training at Atar military school located in the centre of the country,” the sources said.

The information emerged as Saudi Deputy Defence Minister Muhammad Ben Abdallah Al-Ayesh visited the Mauritanian capital this week. He was received on Tuesday by the Mauritania President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

The Saudi official also met the Mauritanian Minister of Defence and the Chief of the army Mohamed Ould Cheikh Mohamed Ahmed to discuss modalities related to the operation.

Former Taliban deputy minister detained in Dubai
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A former deputy minister of the regime of Taliban has been detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Reports suggest that Abdul Rahman Zahid, the deputy foreign minister of Taliban regime, was placed in durance vile
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
after landing at Dubai International Airport last month.

According to reports, Zahid was not directly involved in the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan but had contacts with the group's political office in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
and some other Taliban capos in Pakistain.

UAE government has said that Zahid, who also had international links, might have held meetings without prior permission.

An official has told Pajhwok news agency on the condition of anonymity Zahid had increased interaction with the Afghan government and his arrest might be a joint effort of the spy networks of the UAE and Pakistain.

Neither Taliban nor Afghan government has commented on the report.

But Motasim Agha Jan who was a high-ranking official of the Taliban was also anonymously arrested in UAE while he was supporting a peace deal between Taliban and Afghan government. He was later set free.

Coalition forces prepare for massive attack in Sanaa
Analysts and military experts predicted that the ground battles in Yemen will be extensively escalating before the start of potential negotiations between the Houthi militias and the Yemen's government.

The Aden Time news website quoted sources that the coalition forces are preparing for a massive land attack to in the Yemeni capital Sanaa to capture it from the Houthis and forces loyal to deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The sources affirmed that the Houthis are trying hard to keep its remaining forces and its pro-Saleh forces away from such a major strike.

A large number of Houthis and pro-Saleh forces have been seen leaving their strongholds in Sanaa or surrendering themselves so as to avoid an imminent onslaught, sources said.

Meanwhile, around 500 Mauritanian military troops are reportedly gearing up to join Saudi Arabia-led military coalition in Yemen to combat Houthi rebels, military sources have told an African newspaper.

"Soldiers of the armed forces who are ready to be sent to Saudi Arabia, completed over the past weeks their military training at Atar military school located in the centre of the country," the sources told the North Africa Post.

The newspaper said that the information emerged as Saudi Deputy Defence Minister Muhammad Bin Abdallah Al Ayesh visited the Mauritanian capital this week. He also met Mauritania President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. The Saudi official also met the Mauritanian Minister of Defence and the Chief of the army Mohamed Ould Cheikh Mohamed Ahmed to discuss modalities related to the operation.

Hundreds of Sudanese troops have also arrived in Yemen to bolster Saudi Arabia's campaign against Houthi rebels. About 700 Sudanese soldiers arrived by sea in Yemen's southern port city of Aden, which is under coalition control, the Al Masdar news website reported. Abdullah Hamud, a witness and resident, said by phone that he saw Sudanese troops in armoured and military vehicles driving in the city.

The coalition is trying to reinstate the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, which crumbled after rebels overtook the capital, Sanaa, last year. The coalition recaptured Aden in July and has made ground advances, but Sanaa and other regions remain under Houthi control.

Europe
Spain Arrests Suspected Jihadist about to Head to Syria
[AnNahar] A 22-year-old Spanish woman suspected of trying to reach Syria to join Islamist faceless myrmidons was incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on Tuesday at Madrid airport before boarding a flight to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, police said.

The woman is originally from the southwestern province of Huelva and had converted "to the most extreme form of Islam and allegedly maintained contact with radical elements", they said in a statement.

"The woman had planned to travel to Turkey and then go to Syria to join the ranks of Daesh [Islamic State]," police added, using the Arabic name for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

She was the latest of several suspected female IS sympathizers detained in Spain since last year over security concerns.

In September police arrested an 18-year-old Moroccan woman accused of preparing to travel to Syria to join the group, and in July a woman was arrested in the Canary Islands accused of recruiting maidens of tender years and facilitating their passage to areas controlled by IS.

Like other European nations, Spain has made clamping down on radicalized Islamist cells a priority, but it has been unable to stem the flow of people out of the country to join IS in Syria and Iraq.

It estimates that around 100 nationals have joined jihadist fighters in the two countries, a lower number than those from Britannia, La Belle France and Germany.

Officials fear they may return to launch attacks on Spanish soil. In March 2004, Al-Qaeda-inspired bombers blew up four packed commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people.

Arsonists Attack Another Migrant Center in Sweden
[AnNahar] Arsonists attacked asylum seekers' housing in the small town of Munkedal in southern Sweden early Tuesday, the latest in a wave of attacks as migrant numbers, and tensions, rise.

Since the start of the year, 15 arson attacks throughout the country have targeted refugee reception centers and apartments, reducing some to cinders.

"A civilized country like Sweden cannot accept that housing centers of asylum seekers should become prey to arsonists." Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said on Twitter Tuesday.

Local inquiries have been launched, but the national police authority NOA could get involved if links are established between the various attacks, said police spokeswoman Carolina Ekeus.

The latest attack in the small hours of Tuesday morning occurred at normally tranquil Munkedal, a town of 10,000 inhabitants in southwestern Sweden.

No one was maimed, although some of the 14 migrants living there suffered slight smoke inhalation. They were swiftly rehoused.

"I thought I was going to die, it was horrible, but now it's OK, I'm safe," said Ahmet, a Somalian refugee interviewed by Swedish public radio SR.

In ten of the recent spate of cases, criminal intent has been established beyond doubt.

On June 19, two Molotov cocktails were hurled at a building housing migrants.

On August 16 a Christian cross was set ablaze near a migrant center and, the same day, another center was evacuated after the discovery of a bag containing flammable liquid.

That center, in the central town of Arboga, housed two Eritrea

Turkey Holds Top Pro-Kurdish Lawyer for 'Terrorist Propaganda'
[ALMANAR.LB] Turkish police on Tuesday jugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
a top lawyer in the majority Kurdish city of Diyarbakir for alleged "terrorist propaganda", taking him to Istanbul for questioning, a legal source said.

The source said Tahir Elci, head of the bar in the southeastern city and campaigner for Kurdish rights, was arrested over an interview to CNN Turk last week in which he said the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) "is not a terrorist organization".

On Tuesday he was being questioned by anti-terrorist prosecutors. Being a "terror apologist" is punishable by jail under Turkish law.

"This scene clearly shows the state of freedom of expression in Turkey today," Cihan news agency quoted Elci as saying as he was taken away by police.

"Is Turkey a country of freedom, a democratic country? This scene shows what it is."

In the interview, Elci sparked anger from other CNN Turk guests by saying: "The PKK is a political movement which has important political demands and which enjoys widespread support, even if some of its actions are of a terrorist nature."
And then, according to Rudaw, the judge released him:
A Turkish court on Tuesday released Tahir Elci, the head of the Bar Association in Diyarbakir, after detaining him earlier in the day for alleged "terrorist propaganda."

The court decided to release Elci, but banned him from leaving the country.

Speaking to the press after his release, Elci said that the case "clearly shows the state of freedom of expression in this country today."

"We should have the right to express our own views, ideas and suggestions on our own way," Elci said. "As a representative of an NGO I am not bound by any particular political party's definitions when I have to discuss issues that concern the public."

Elci stressed he stood by his comments to CNN Turk.

"I don't believe that the PKK should be defined as a terrorist organization," he said, and warned against "alienation" of the PKK and the Turkish army.

"We won't get anywhere as long as the political Kurdish movement calls the Turkish army an 'army of invasion' or the Turkish state authorities call the Kurdish movement 'a terrorist organization,'" Elci said.

After his 90-minute defense in court, the court took a short break to reach a decision. It concluded that the "strong suspicion of an offense is not sufficient to maintain an arrest warrant."

Iraq
Iraqi Forces Retake Refinery Town of Baiji
[ALMANAR.LB] Iraqi forces and volunteer fighters have managed to liberate a major northern town from ISIL terrorists, military officials said.

The spokesman of Iraq’s Joint Military Command Brigadier General Yahya Rasool said on Tuesday that army troops and paramilitary fighters, known as Popular Mobilization Forces, retook the town of Baiji in Salahuddin Province earlier in the day.

Baiji is located about 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of the major city of Mosul, which fell to the Takfiri militants in June 2014. The town, which is home to Iraq’s largest oil refinery, has been the scene of fierce clashes between terrorists and pro-government forces over the past weeks.

Footage aired by the state-run TV showed Iraqi troops waving flags from rooftops in Baiji as thick black smoke billowed into the air.

Iraqi officials announced the liberation of the oil installations in Baiji last week.

New security measures cause drop in terror activity in Jerusalem
[Jpost] Violence in the capital had abated significantly by Tuesday after police set up multiple roadblocks and heavily armed checkpoints, coupled with intensive spot checks, in east Jerusalem Arab neighborhoods.

Police front man Micky Rosenfeld said roadblocks placed over the past several days in Jebl Mukaber, Shuafat, Silwan, Ras el-Amud and Isawiya have been instrumental in stymieing further terrorist activity.

"The results of our emphasis on roadblocks and checkpoints throughout the capital can be felt on the ground," Rosenfeld said on Tuesday.

"Border Police are carrying out intensive spot checks in different Arab neighborhoods to find potential bully boyz and prevent them from coming into west Jerusalem.

More roadblocks and security measures will continue for as long as there is a threat of terrorist attacks."

Rosenfeld said nearly 5,000 officers from a range of units, assisted by hundreds of soldiers, have apprehended 490 Arab suspects since the terrorism wave began in the city at the beginning of the month.

Citing acting police commissioner Asst.-Ch. Bentzi Sau's Tuesday announcement that police expect to make hundreds of more arrests in east Jerusalem after forming six task forces with the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), Rosenfeld said the ongoing zero-tolerance strategy has finally leveled the playing field.

"Thousands of coppers are leaving nothing to chance and will arrest all suspects who attempt to carry out attacks and disturbances until order is restored," he said.

IOF Arrests Senior Hamas West Bank Figure
[ALMANAR.LB] Israeli occupation forces tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
one of the top West Bank leaders of the Paleostinian resistance movement, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, in a raid near Ramallah overnight on Monday.

"During the night, forces of the army and the Shin Bet (internal security service) arrested Hassan Yusef, a Hamas leader, in Beitunia, southwest of Ramallah," an occupation army statement said on Tuesday.

Yusef's arrest was confirmed by the Paleostinian security services.

"Yusef has been arrested and imprisoned several times in the past," the statement added.

Yusef, who was a founding member of Hamas in the late 1980s, has spent years in Israeli jails. He was elected to the Paleostinian parliament from prison in 2006 and was only released from his last stint in jail in June.

Yusef made headlines during the second Paleostinian intifada, or uprising, of 2000-2005 when he renounced his son after he admitted to informing for the Shin Bet under the codename Green Prince.

This came as a Paleostinian was martyred south of Bethlehem after he was shot by Zionist forces who allegedly accused him of running over a settler.

Paleostinian media sources reported that two Palstinians were martyred for allegedly trying to stab a soldier in Kiryat Arbaa settlement in Al-Khalil.

On the other hand, violent festivities erupted at the entrance to the city of Bethlehem in the town of Ni'lin, where a number of Paleostinians were maimed, including two with live ammunition, according to the Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy.

In parallel, occupation forces began the demolition of the family house of the detainee Maher Hashlamon who carried out the heroic stabbing operation late 2014.

- overt and intractable bias
- they get basic facts wrong sometimes
- their writing is sometimes so incoherent as to be incomprehensible

even with Rantburgians interpolating and translating it is still a problem

of course, on the other hand sometimes they do give away important info not available elsewhere so I guess its always a judgement call

however, my sense is that Rantburg uses Al-manar too often

They haven't done so every day of the current excitements, but it is so helpful when they do.

It was a busy day, full of the usual: knife attackers shot and killed, raids followed by arrests, riots and clashes, a Hamas bigshot arrested for incitement, snipers in Gaza shot by IDF soldiers, molotov cocktails thrown at soldiers and rocks thrown at vehicles... and several Arabs discovered that ramming Israelis with cars is a good way to get shot.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Pro-gov't source: Russians killed in Syria
[Rudaw] At least three Russians have been killed in Syria alongside pro-government troops after their position near Latakia was shelled, according to a senior pro-government military source, Rooters is reporting.

If the claim is true, the deaths, which occurred Monday night, would be the first known instance of Russians being killed in Syria since Russia began Arclight airstrikes against anti-government forces in support of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
on September 30.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights head Rami Abdulrahman told Rooters the deaths did occur, but he did not have an exact figure for how many. He also said he believed they were not Russian military personnel, but volunteers.

Rooters reported that the pro-government source, who is familiar with military events in Syria, said at least 20 Russians were at the post in the Nabi Younis area when the shell struck.

Russia Says Hit 60 IS, Nusra Targets in Syria
[AnNahar] Russian warplanes have hit 60 targets in Syria over the past 24 hours, including a munitions factory in eastern Deir Ezzor province, Russia's defense ministry said Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that it had targeted sites controlled by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. Front and made a total of 55 sorties.

It said it "destroyed a large base" with a stockpile of munitions and a command post in Idlib province.

In Deir Ezzor province, a "precision strike destroyed a mini factory" making bombs and rockets while another bomb "destroyed a terrorist communication hub" located in a post office building.

Some targets were also located in Aleppo, Latakia and Damascus, and nine "underground fortifications" were hit in Hama province.

Syria's conflict has left more than 250,000 dead and forced millions from their homes since March 2011, sparking a mass migration of refugees that has left Europe struggling to cope.

The latest regime offensive has caused a mass exodus from Aleppo, according to the U.N., while the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Russian bombs have so far killed 370 people, including civilians.

Report: Army Confirms Targeting Nusra Members in Monday's Shelling
[AnNahar] The army has bolstered its security measures on the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal in light of the shelling on Monday that saw the death of eight krazed killers, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Tuesday.

A high-ranking military source confirmed to the daily that the army's shelling had targeted members of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front.

It also clarified that the military shelled the gangs with artillery, not helicopters as media reports had speculated.

"The army has bolstered its measures in the area to thwart any attack or ambush by gangs," the source added.

The military shells the positions of al-Nusra on Arsal's outskirts and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. on Ras Baalbek's outskirts "on a daily basis," it explained, adding that Monday's shelling was "significant" because it incurred a number of casualties among the gunnies's ranks.

Eight people were killed and many maimed on Monday when the army targeted bully boy positions along the eastern border with war-torn Syria.

The army frequently shells the bully boys' positions in the border area, while Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
fighters have confronted them on the Syrian side.

The border area is also home to informal Syrian refugee camps largely beyond the reach of authorities or aid agencies.

In August 2014, Islamic State and Nusra Front hard boyz seized some 20 Lebanese soldiers and coppers during a brief cross-border raid on the town of Arsal. The bully boyz have executed four of them and are still holding the rest.

Syrian Army Continue Advancing in Aleppo Countryside
[ALMANAR.LB] Syrian Army units established full control over Tal Sabe'en village and the area surrounding it in the eastern countryside of Aleppo province and over al-Safeira in Aleppo's southern countryside.

Earlier, an army unit killed all 20 members of a terrorist group in Kaferkar village in the southeastern countryside of Aleppo province, a military source said.

Another army unit, the source added, killed a number of bully boyz and destroyed their weapons and ammunition in al-Sheikh Lutfi village on the southeastern outskirts of Aleppo city.

The army units, in cooperation with the popular defense groups, carried out operations against terrorists' dens and positions to the east of al-Safeira, Tal Alam, Tal al-Sous, al-Amara and Deir Hafer, leaving many bully boyz dead and their vehicles destroyed.

In the western countryside of Aleppo, an army unit left all members of a terrorist group dead or injured as it targeted it in al-Mansoura village to the west of Aleppo city, SANA reported.

A number of vehicles for al-Nusra

bully boyz were destroyed in Tal Rifaat and Maarata in northern Aleppo.

The army units targeted in direct hits against hideouts and gatherings of al-Nusra bully boyz in al-Ameriyeh, al-Rashidin and Karm al-Jabal neighborhoods in Aleppo city, inflicting heavy losses upon them.

A terrorists' hideout in Nazlit al-Zibdiyeh and a locally-made cannon (nicknamed hell cannon) in al-Mash'had neighborhood in Aleppo city were destroyed.

Russian Air Strikes Kill 45 Terrorists in Syria, including FSA Chief
[ALMANAR.LB] Russian air strikes in Syria's Latakia province killed a top commander of the so-called 'Free Syrian Army

' that is armed by foreign enemies of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

, a monitoring group said on Tuesday.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 45 people - both rebel fighters and civilians - were killed in the air strikes on Monday evening in the Jabal Akrad area, which is held by the First Coastal Division terrorist group.

FSA confirmed the death of its chief of staff, Basil Zamo, formerly a captain in the Syrian military.

The First Coastal Division is one of several groups that have received foreign military support under a program supported by the United States, including US-made anti-tank missiles, the most potent weapon in the rebels' arsenal.

The commander of another such group, the Nour al Din al-Zinki Brigades, was killed in fighting south of Aleppo on Monday.

These groups, often led by officers who defected from the Syrian army after the uprising against President Bashir al-Assad erupted in 2011, have been widely eclipsed by takfiri

US deploys ground-attack A-10 planes to Turkey
[Times of India] Washington: The US military has deployed a dozen A-10 ground-attack planes to the air base at Incirlik in southern Turkey, a US official said on Tuesday.

The 12 planes, famed for their tank-destroying capabilities, arrived over the weekend and have already been scheduled to fly missions in support of the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State jihadists in Iraq and Syria, the official told AFP.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said the move had "added capability" to the coalition's efforts against IS.
Known by troops on the ground as "Warthogs," A-10 planes are heavily strengthened and designed to withstand direct hits from armor-piercing rounds.

The planes typically fly lower and slower than F-16s, which also puts them more in harm's way.

"There's more significant risk than other aircraft due to the flight path they typically fly," the official said.
It wasn't immediately clear if the US-led coalition has already used A-10s during its bombing campaign of IS jihadists, which has been going on for more than a year.
