Taliban Hiding In Jawzjan Houses Slowing Dostum's Progress
[ToloNews] The clearance operation currently underway in Khum Aab in northern Jawzjan province -- which is being led by first Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
- is progressing slowly due to the Taliban's practice of hiding out in civilian homes.

Reporting from the area, TOLOnews journalist Wali Arian said civilians are under threat and that their houses are being used as hideouts by turbans. He reported that a number of homes have also been torched by the Taliban.

He said security forces are trying to prevent civilian casualties -- especially during their house-to-house searches for the Lion of Islams.

Speaking to TOLOnews, Dostum said: "They are hiding behind children, behind women and this makes the war difficult. It is difficult to find out who is the enemy and who is a friend."

Heavy festivities in the district however lasted for a few hours on Sunday and ended after a number of forces of Evil were killed and tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
Speaking to TOLOnews, one security force member who captured an turban said: "He [the suspected Lion of Islam] had a turban on and a white hat and was also in a military uniform. He shouted at us not to fire but when we got closer, he opened fire on us and then he hid in a civilian house."

Another suspected turban who was arrested said he joined the Taliban 10 months ago. When arrested by security forces he told TOLOnews that at least 80 of them entered Afghanistan together from the Afghan-Turkmen island along the Turkmenistan border.

#1  It would seem that lightly populated easterrnmost Turkmenistan, which borders Afghanistan's Jowzjan province and north of the Darya river has become a staging ground for the mujahideen. Another country heard from.

#2  Open-source indicates that Turkmen, both national and Afghan-ethnic appear to have joined the ranks. If so, that might indicate it's a tribal issue as well as an Islamic one.

War Ongoing In Helmand, Troops Call For Help
[ToloNews] A number of security force members fighting hard boyz in Babaji area in Lashkargah city in southern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province said on Sunday that their battle has lasted over a week and that they have not been able to suppress the Taliban due to a lack of military equipment.

"It has been six days that we are in battle here. We retook control of several areas but we lost them due to a lack of military equipment," said one soldier.

Another soldier said: "This is the third security check post which we have retaken from Lion of Islams. We were in the first line of the war for two days but we received no support."

A number of police officials meanwhile said Talibs have killed family members of coppers in parts of Lashkargah city and that they have destroyed a number of bridges as well.

"The hard boyz have killed some family members of coppers, they have destroyed bridges and burned down schools -- for cooperating with government," a Public Order police commander told TOLOnews.

Meanwhile the head of Helmand's provincial council Karim Atal said the battle has moved closer to Lashkargah city and that reinforcement troops are needed urgently.

"The defense and interior ministers should pay serious attention to this clash which is now close to Lashkargah city. They should provide our brave troops with air support," he added.

According to Helmand police, at least 15 hard boyz have been killed in the operation so far.

Spain Ends Afghan Mission But Leaves 25 Troops in Kabul
[ToloNews] Spanish troops lowered their flag Friday at their base in western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province, ending their 14-year mission, with a ceremony presided over by Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria.

Nonetheless, Spain will honor its commitment to Afghanistan by leaving 25 soldiers in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
at the general barracks of the international mission led by NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
Accompanied by Defense Chief of Staff Adm. Fernando Garcia Sanchez and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Jaime Dominguez Buj, the deputy prime minister praised the troops for their work in missions abroad.

About Afghanistan she recalled the more than 100 troops who died during the mission and said it is impossible to forget that the army came "to a war that demanded the greatest efforts right up to the ultimate consequences."

Since the mission was launched in January 2002, close to 30,000 Spanish troops have served in Afghanistan.

Taliban Upsurge Draws Afghan City Dwellers into Battle
[AnNahar] Draped in a bandolier of shotgun cartridges, an Afghan cafe owner was forced to cobble together a militia of neighborhood fruit vendors and vegetable hawkers when the Taliban threatened his city, demonstrating an alarming new push into urban areas.

Emboldened by their recent three-day occupation of Kunduz, the first Afghan city to fall to the Taliban since their ouster from power in 2001, Lions of Islam have made brazen attempts to overrun several other provincial centers, from Ghazni in the south to Maimana in the north.

Seen previously as a rural bad boy movement capable only of hit-and-run attacks on cities, the Taliban's aggressive campaign to capture major urban areas reveals a highly potent insurgency that poses a crucial test for Afghanistan's overstretched NATO

#1  Concern in the WaPo comments section about the rounds coming down someplace. Discussion about whether they'r solid shot or HE timed to explode in the air and come down as mostly harmless shreds. Most ADA HE rounds, from WW II on, had that capacity, including, iirc, 20mm fired from fighters because you might be fighting over your own territory.
Anyway, whatever they do, it's better for the civilians that 155mm counterbattery fire.

Shaboobs attack Bardera airstrip
BARDERA, Somalia -- Al Shabaab militants raided airstrip in Gedo regional district of Bardera late on Saturday night according to residents, Garowe Online reports.

Ethiopian and Kenyan forces serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) are co-located at Bardera airstrip on the outskirts of one of the newly liberated areas in southwestern Somalia.

Volleys of gunfire and fierce gun-battle erupted after militants attacked the base, residents reported. Stray bullets wounded three people, including nine-year-old girl.

African Union mission and Al Shabaab have not commented on the exact number of casualty figures.

Telecommunication has been taken off air after security forces began massive security operation to track any links to terror group.

Somali government forces aided by African Union peacekeepers liberated Bardere, a strategic town on Jubba River from Al Shabaab militants in July this year.

Kenyan troops kill 15 Shaboobs in Somalia, destroy operations base
KDF troops have killed 15 Al-Shabaab terrorists in an attack on an operation base used by the militants across River Jubba in Yantooy, Somalia. During the Sunday morning operation, two boats used by the militants to cross River Jubba were also destroyed.

According to KDF spokesman Col David Obonyo, the attack is part of the ongoing Operations ‘Jubba Corridor.’ The operations are meant to prepare for the capture of Jilib, the remaining Al-Shabaab headquarters in lower Shabelle.

Yantooy is strategically situated across river Jubba and has been the main base that the terrorist use to cross the river from Jilib and infiltrate into lower Jubba.

Five North Sinai parliamentary candidates withdraw following killing of Nour candidate
Terror reorients priorities.
[AlAhram] Parliamentary candidate and head of pharmacists syndicate in North Sinai, Hossam Refai, has withdrawn from the elections, along with four others in the governorate, after a Nour party candidate was killed Saturday, Ahram Arabic website reported.

Pharmacist and Salafist Nour party's only North Sinai candidate, Mostafa Abdel-Rahman, was rubbed out by unknown assailants Saturday while leaving his home in North Sinai's El-Arish.

El-Arish is allocated two individual seats in the parliament out of five seats for the North Sinai governorate.

Emad El-Balk, Hamada Sinbil, Mohammed Hassanein, and Shehta El-Sayed also withdrew from the race following the killing, said Refai, but the exact reason for their withdrawal was not specified.

Refai also said a meeting will be held to coordinate with other candidates who wish to withdraw in North Sinai.

Nour party, the only Islamist group running for parliament, issued a statement Saturday calling upon officials to quickly investigate and to find the perpetrators.

No group has yet grabbed credit for Abdel-Rahman's liquidation.

Al-Azhar, Egypt's highest Sunni authority, issued a statement Saturday condemning the liquidation and saying Egyptians will not surrender to terrorism.

"The Egyptian people will not bow to this cowardly terrorism that targets Egyptians with all their ideologies," the statement read.

"The [Egyptian people's] will and determination is channeled towards the homeland's civilisation and towards rebuilding the state institutions, which will be completed with the parliament, and their will shall not be broken," the statement read.

Elections for the second electoral stage for 13 governorates including North Sinai are scheduled to take place 22-23 November. The first stage took place 27-28 October and a run-off is due Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Nour party was also the only Islamist group that supported Morsi's ouster and has generally supported the current government.

Something to consider.

Gunmen on motorbike shoot policeman dead in Egypt’s Beni Suef
[AlAhram] Gunmen on a cycle of violence rubbed out an Egyptian policeman south of Cairo, the interior ministry said early on Sunday.

The incident, which occurred late on Saturday in Beni Suef governorate, is the latest in a string of attacks on security forces that have spiked since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

Two assailants on a motorbike opened fire Saturday night on a vehicle belonging to policeman Khalifa Ali Hassan in the city of El-Fashan in the southern part of Beni Suef.

No group has grabbed credit for the attack.

Attacks over the past two years have mainly taken place in the North Sinai region, the epicenter of a mounting Islamist insurgency.

45 in Custody over 'Boko Haram Plot' in Lagos
[AnNahar] Nigeria's secret police have tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
and charged 45 suspects over an alleged Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
plot to attack the country's financial hub, Lagos, sources with knowledge of the matter told AFP on Sunday.

"About 60 suspects were picked up from different locations in Lagos by the Department of State Services acting on intelligence information they were planning to attack Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi last month," said one source, referring to an upscale area of Lagos.

Both sources, who asked not to be identified for security reasons, said some of the suspects were released after preliminary investigations, while 45 others were taken to a magistrate court on Friday.

"They were arraigned on holding charges. The DSS urged the court to remand them in prison pending further investigation and their eventual arraignment before a high court," said a source.

Dolphin Estate is a gated community on the Ikoyi island, which is home to wealthy Nigerians as well as expatriate workers, many of them in the oil and gas industry.

Any attack on Lagos, which drives Nigeria's economy and is seen by many foreign governments as a gateway to West Africa, would likely send shockwaves through both.

Lagos State Information Commissioner Steve Ayorinde on Saturday called for the public's help in ensuring the safety of the megacity's 20 million-strong population.

"Our appeal goes to every school, housing estates, religious houses, markets and shopping complexes, hotels and restaurants and sporting arenas to take issues of security and personal safety more seriously these days and to work with both the government and security agencies in promptly reporting any persons with suspicious activities or unusual gatherings that may compromise security," he said.

"Care must also be taken in how domestic servants and house aides are also employed," he added in a statement.

Boko Haram, which wants to carve out a hardline Islamic state in Nigeria's northeast, has threatened to move south to spread its six-year-old insurgency in the country.

The capital, Abuja, has been hit several times, most recently on October 2 when three jacket wallahs killed 18 in two satellite towns -- while Lagos was attacked last June.

The boom-mobileing, near fuel depots and the city's main port, killed at least four and although denied by the authorities, was claimed by Boko Haram's shadowy leader, Abubakar Shekau.

In one propaganda video, Shekau threatened to hit Nigeria's oil-producing south.

Security analysts said at the time the Lagos bombing was likely to have been carried out by a small group of Boko Haram sympathizers, with no direct link to the group's high command.

- Military checkpoint targeted -
On Sunday, four suicide bombers attempting to blow up a military checkpoint in Maiduguri were killed when their car went kaboom!, local vigilantes, assisting the military in the fight against Boko Haram told AFP.

"Around 1:30 pm, a Golf car carrying four people went kaboom! just before the Jimtilo military checkout, on the outskirts of Maiduguri," vigilante Baba Kura said.

"We mobilized to the scene along with military personnel and we discovered the kaboom was caused by explosives and the car was engulfed in flames."

Another vigilante Umar Sani gave a similar account of the incident.

"A car went kaboom! just before reaching a military checkpoint. All the four occupants of the car died from the kaboom," he said.

Arabia
Heavy Clashes in Yemen's Taez, Medical Aid Blocked
[AnNahar] Heavy festivities and air strikes in Yemen's third city Taez left at least 36 fighters dead on Sunday, army sources said, as aid workers struggled to make medical deliveries.

The fighting between Saudi-backed pro-government forces and Shiite Houthis and their allies killed at least 21 rebels and 15 loyalists, the sources said.

New festivities broke out when loyalist forces tried to take back a presidential palace on a hill overlooking the city's east.

Loyalists control the center of Taez, encircled by the Houthis and allied forces loyal to ousted president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
.

The city in central Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
has been a key battleground as forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi seek to regain ground from the Iran-backed Huthis.

In a statement on Sunday, aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said essential medical supplies it hoped to deliver to a besieged enclave of the city were being blocked.

"It is very frustrating that, after weeks of negotiations, we have made no progress in convincing officials of the need to provide impartial medical assistance to the victims of the ongoing fighting within this enclave," Karline Kleijer, MSF's emergency manager for Yemen, said.

She said that this was despite MSF's support to health facilities in Huthi-controlled areas.

Only six of 20 hospitals in the city of more than 600,000 continue to function due to the conflict, and often only partially, MSF said.

"They lack staff, fuel and essential medicines, and are overwhelmed by the high numbers of maimed seeking to access their emergency services on a daily basis," it said.

Intensifying fighting has left Taez in a desperate situation, with closed hospitals and acute shortages of medicine, food, water and fuel, the Red Thingy said this week.

Saudi drone shot down in Taiz
The Yemeni army and the popular committees downed on Saturday a Saudi drone in the southwestern province of Taiz.

Yemeni media quoted field sources as saying that the drone was shot down in al-Dim area in Jabal al-Saber (al-Saber Height).

t’s not the first time that the Yemeni army and the committees shoot down a Saudi unmanned aerial vehicle. The allied forces downed on October 22 a Saudi drone in the Jabal Aswadin Taiz.

Yemen has been since March 26 under brutal aggression by Saudi-led coalition. Thousands have been martyred and injured in the attack, with the vast majority of them are civilians.

Riyadh launched the attack on Yemen in a bid to restore power to fugitive president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi who is a close ally to Saudi Arabia.

However, Yemeni army, backed by popular committees and tribal fighter has been responding to the aggression by targeting several Saudi border military posts and cleansing several areas across the country, especially the country’s south, from Hadi and al-Qaeda-linked militias.

Militants storm supermarket in Aden
Terrorists Militants stormed a supermarket in Yemen's southern city of Aden on Sunday, firing into the air and briefly taking hostages, security officials and witnesses said.

About 30 terrorists militants arrived at the supermarket in four pickup trucks on Sunday afternoon, the officials and witnesses said. Shoppers fled when the terrorists militants fired in the air, but an unknown number were trapped inside when the gunmen locked the doors. The terrorists militants freed the hostages after less than an hour and left the scene.

Some supermarket employees were slightly hurt when the terrorists militants kicked and punched them.

The witnesses said the terrorists militants shouted that they were protesting the mingling of men and women in the supermarket and demanded that female employees cover their faces. A supermarket worker said the terrorists militants told them this was the final warning.

The incident happened in the late afternoon when the Zamaran supermarket, the city's largest, is usually packed with shoppers. It appeared to be intended as a show of force by the terrorists militants who have in recent months wielded significant influence in parts of the city overlooking the Arabian Sea.

Aden has been a main battlefield in the conflict between Houthis, and allied army units against forces loyal to the internationally recognised government as well as southern terrorists separatists and other terrorists militants. After pro-government forces expelled the Houthis from Aden in July, Al Qaeda terrorists appears to have taken advantage of the security vacuum as pro-government forces moved on to challenge the Houthis elsewhere in southern Yemen.

An official at the University of Aden said terrorists militants have threatened faculty deans, demanding they ban students of the opposite sex from mixing.

Security officials in the city said on Saturday that mediated talks with Al Qaeda to persuade its terrorist fighters to surrender their weapons or move out of Aden had failed. Washington considers Al Qaeda's terrorist Yemen branch to be the most dangerous terrorist offshoot of the terror network.

Sunday's supermarket incident followed the overnight storming of Aden's central prison by suspected Al Qaeda terrorists gunmen who freed an individual blamed for an August attack on the compound of the city's former governor, according to security officials in Aden. Four people were killed in the August rocket-propelled grenade attack on the former governor's compound. The former governor and other officials who were present at the time were not hurt.

Tensions along the LoC began flaring up again despite an hour-long meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Ufa, Russia in July.

After cross-border firing took place along the LoC on Eidul Fitr, the Foreign Office lodged a strong protest with India over what it referred to as the "offensive posture" of Indian security forces and a provocative act against the spirit of the Ufa understanding.

(ISIS) prison south of Kirkuk.

The joint operation started at 0200am on Thursday, stated KRSC. KRSC's Counter Terror Department (CTD) forces made an airdrop into the main Islamic State, or ISIS, prison, 7 km north of Hawija.

According to KRSC's statement, 48 Peshmerga from CTD forces and 30 US Special Forces soldiers were part of the operation that lasted two hours.

Six helicopters, three Chinooks and three Black Hawks took part in the operation.

"KRSC had information that the prisoners were going to be executed on the same day the operation took place. According to the rescued prisoners, they had been told it was the last day of their life. There had been some special graves were dig to bury them," read KRSC's statement.

According to KRSC, the Peshmerga led the operation as the US force played a supporting role, but due an ensuing fight between the Peshmerga and ISIS holy warriors the US forces had to intervene. One US soldier was killed and three Peshmerga were maimed as a result.

KRSC has confirmed that none of the prisoners were Kurds but more than twenty of them were ex-members of the Iraqi security forces about to be executed by ISIS.

KRSC considers the Hawija operation as the "single most significant joint rescue operation based out of Kurdistan region conducted deep into the ISIL territory."

Yes, it is on the same road that goes to Mosul but it is not particularly critical in developing a plan to retake Mosul.

Somali-British national does splodydope attack in Iraq
A British ISIS fighter has carried out a devastating suicide bomb attack near the jihadi held city of Ramadi in Iraq. Abu Khalid al-Britani killed at least 50 Iraqi soldiers in a double suicide bomb attack with a Tunisian fighter whilst defending Ramadi.

A photograph was posted online in tribute to the British fighter, who was half Yemeni and half Somali in origin but never lived in Somalia. Another fighter known as Abu Maidah as-Somali, who used to live in London and Sweden, described the dead jihadi as his ‘best friend’.

Abu Maidah revealed that the British suicide bomber was in his 40s and was not fluent in Somali. Abu Khalid al-Britani was from the UK and was of Somali and Yemeni origin but only spoke limited Somali. He is the second British jihadi to blow himself up at Ramadi in less than a week.

The two fighters met in a terrorist training camp before Abu Khalid volunteered to fight in Iraq.

Abu Khalid al-Britani is the third British fighter to blow himself up at Ramadi whilst fighting for ISIS.

Earlier this week, ISIS released a statement claiming that a British fighter called Abu Omar al-Britani had taken part in a twin suicide bomb attack, killing and wounding 80 people. The attack was carried out as Iraqi Special Forces launched a large offensive to try to re-take the ISIS held city.

A photograph showed the British fighter sitting behind an office desk in Anbar province. The fighter is dressed in a white thobe and has chunky gold watch on his wrist. His large framed glasses poke out above the black mask which covers half of his face.

In what appears to be an office, the fighter has a large knife, a single green hand grenade and a pistol placed in front of him on the work top. A single copy of the Qu’ran rests next to a laptop as the jihadi poses with his gloved index finger pointed up to the sky to show his oneness with God.

The rise in British suicide bombers at Ramadi comes as ISIS continue to hold out at the strategic spot after successfully capturing the city in May. British Kosovan Fatlum Shalaku was the first British national to carry out a suicide bomb attack during the taking of the city.

A propaganda video of his final moments were released online two weeks ago, with the jihadi describing his decision through the use of a Qur’anic quote. Just before he climbed into his armoured vehicle, laden with explosives, Fatlum said his last words: ‘I just want to go out there with a bang.’

Southeast Asia
Three Abu Sayyaf militants killed in Basilan gun battle
[InterAksyon} A Philippine military unit on a clearing operation in Basilan on Sunday encountered Abu Sayyaf Group militants, triggering a gun battle that left three militants dead, and dozens more combatants injured, among them four soldiers.

Captain Roy Trinidad said, "Operating troops of Joint Task Group-Basilan encountered an estimated 50 combined members of the Abu Sayyaf group under sub-leader Radzmil Jannatul at around 11:50 this morning that resulted in three dead bandits."

During the gun battle, another group of miltants, led by Katatuh Balaman, joined Jannatul's group, according to Trinidad. He said, "The troops were conducting clearing operations when they chanced upon Jannatul's group. They were joined later by the group of Balaman."

Though the the arrival of the second group prolonged the fighting, the milatants finally withdrew after military reinforcements arrived. The militants left behind the bodies of their former comrades.

Senior Nusra Front leader killed near Aleppo
[Rudaw] A big shot of the Syrian Al-Qaeda offshoot Nusra Front was killed Sunday near the embattled city of Aleppo by the Syrian regime army, the UK's Independent newspaper has reported.

According to an Independent source, Abu Suleiman al-Masri, originally from Egypt, was killed during a fight near Tal Al-Karsani village outside Aleppo. Russian state media also reported Masri was killed by the Syrian army, but a report in the UK's Daily Mail newspaper said he had actually been killed in a gun fight by fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Masri's death followed statements by the Russian defense ministry this week saying ISIS was in talks with other bully boy groups operating in Syria, including Nusra Front, to join forces against the Syrian army, which has recently been involved in an offensive on Aleppo backed by Russian warplanes, according to The Independent.

"Intercepted radio communications suggest that commanders of several large units of the [Nusra Front] terrorist group have begun talks with leaders of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. terrorist organization about joining forces to contain the Syrian [army] offensive," The Independent quoted Russian defense ministry front man Igor Konashenkov as saying on October 21.

The Nusra Front is an Al-Qaeda offshoot operating in Syria, combating the Syrian government and also sporadically fighting ISIS and other forces in Syria.

ISIS executes Syrian Army soldier by tank

murderous Moslems released new video footage on Saturday purportedly showing a Syrian army soldier in Homs being run over by a tank and executed.

According to ISIS media, on Saturday ISIS murderous Moslems detained a soldier working in Syrian air force intelligence. The soldier was identified as Fadi Amr al-Zaydan, 19, from the village of Sian in the Jableh area in northern Latakia province.

It the video, Zaydan is shown being tied down while dressed in orange. A tank then rolls in his direction and crushes him under its treads.

On Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that it had received information in September 2015 that ISIS would execute Syrian government forces by running them over with tanks, and that Zaydan's death is the first execution of its kind carried out by ISIS in areas it controls in Syria.

Zaydan's death follows a rescue mission on Thursday that freed 69 ISIS hostages in a joint Kurdish-American operation in Hawija, Iraq.

"During the operation, which ended at 0400 hours and took place approximately seven kilometers (4.3 miles) north of Hawija, 69 hostages were successfully rescued, six ISIS snuffies were detained and more than 20 killed," the Kurdistan Region Security Council said in a statement.
