Fearing more jailbreaks, Afghanistan rushed inmates out of Helmand
KABUL — Afghan authorities rushed 150 “dangerous” inmates from a prison in the insurgency-racked southern province of Helmand to the capital Kabul at the weekend, officials said, after Taliban militants orchestrated two major jailbreaks in recent weeks.

Government forces clashed with Taliban fighters on Wednesday on the outskirts of the provincial capital Lashkar Gah, where fighting has been going on for most of the past week.

Since mid-September, Taliban fighters have broken out hundreds of inmates, many of them fellow militants, from two prisons amid mounting insecurity across Afghanistan.

The fighting in Lashkar Gah sparked fears of a possible repeat of what happened in Kunduz, the northern city that fell briefly to the Taliban last month, when insurgents freed hundreds of inmates from the city’s prison.

Just two weeks before, the Taliban sprang hundreds of prisoners in an attack on a detention center in central Ghazni province.

“There was a rumor that the Taliban would attack the main prison when they were fighting with Afghan forces on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah,” said Helmand police spokesman Shah Mahmood Ashna. “We transferred some of the most dangerous prisoners to Kabul.”

Concerns over further raids on the country’s substandard prisons added to the government’s worries over the spreading Taliban campaign.

If the Lashkar Gah prison were breached, the release of Taliban prisoners into Helmand, an insurgency stronghold, could bolster their position in the fiercely contested region.

In the last year, militants have repeatedly attacked prisons in restive areas. Most have been repelled, but after Ghazni and Kunduz, security was ramped up, said Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior.

“The minister was very serious to instruct police to provide maximum security to prisons in vulnerable areas,” he said. “They are on high alert.”

Taliban Closes Schools, Recruits Students In Wardoj
As unrest continues in the war-hit region of Wardoj district in northern Badakhshan province, local officials on Monday announced that the insurgents have closed down all schools in the area and are recruiting students to fight for them.

This was confirmed by acting governor of Badakhshan Shah Waliullah Adeeb who said numerous students have been recruited by the Taliban and sent to war zones.

Meanwhile, the head of Badakhshan education department Dawlat Mohammad said that nearly 10,000 students are not going to school in Wardoj - 40 of whom are girls – because the Taliban has closed schools.

According to governor Adeeb, the insurgents closed all schools in Wardoj after seizing control of the district and have started recruiting the students who they then send to the front lines.

"Recently Taliban started using children in the war. They have closed schools and most Taliban casualties are children," Adeeb said.

Rumors have reportedly been rife in the past few weeks of the Taliban's use of child soldiers although officials have confirmed last week that a number of Taliban child soldiers were captured in Wardoj recently.

According to Wardoj district governor, up to 10,000 students are now being blocked from going to school and that several students have been killed fighting for the Taliban. He said the practice of recruiting them is resulting in many fleeing their homes and go into hiding.

"The future of more than 10,000 students remains uncertain. Taliban force them to fight and the majority of students are sent to Baharak to fight," Dawlat Mohmmad, Wardoj district governor said.

"We are deeply concerned about the problem, because 40 percent of our students constitute girls. If the same situation continues, the education year is likely to be disrupted," acting head of Badakhshan education department Abdul Raziq Tariq said.

Fifteen schools operate in Wardoj district alone, a Wardoj education department official said adding that more than 90 schools have been closed by the Taliban in the entire province.

Taliban Takes Control of Takhar's Durqad District
Taliban insurgents attacked Durqad district in northern Takhar province on Tuesday night and seized control of the district after heavy clashes with security forces, local officials said.

Noor Mohamad Hakimi, Provincial Police Chief, said that "Taliban insurgents launched attacks on the district late Tuesday and early Wednesday and took control of the district."

"Two security soldiers were killed and two others were injured," Hakimi said.

He said that security forces are still fighting to regain control of the district.

A number of local officials believe that insurgents moved into the area after being driven out of Dashti-e-Archi district in Kunduz province by security forces over the past few days.

However, Gen. Murad Ali Murad, the deputy chief of army staff, said early Wednesday that they launched a military operation earlier in the day to clear insurgents in Takhar.

Local officials meanwhile said that ex-Jihadi leaders, residents and security forces have gathered and launched an operation to re-take control of the district.

Officials said that more troops have also been sent from the center of Takhar to support local forces.

Meanwhile, clashes still continue in Khuja Ghar district of Takhar. So far ten Taliban insurgents were killed and four others injured, according to officials.

The Taliban confirmed in a statement that they have taken control of Durqad after clashing with security forces.

Ethiopia detains ISIS cell members
ARA News

QAMISHLI – Ethiopian authorities have arrested a group of suspects belonging to the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS), who apparently sought to declare an ISIS-linked province in Ethiopia, an official told reporters on Wednesday.

This is the first time Ethiopians disclose the existence of ISIS extremists in their country.

“Our security forces were able to arrest a group of 20 ISIS suspects, trying to establish an Islamic autonomy in Ethiopia,” Ethiopian Prosecutor Tedros Bahro said on Wednesday.

“The hardline group was trying to carry out terrorist attacks to destabilize our country’s security,” he added.

Bahro expressed concerns, saying the militants were active in some areas of Oromiya, Jima, Laqqa, Chourabi, Khamisi, the Somalia region and the Ethiopian Jiqjiqa area.

“ISIS-linked sleeper cells are active in the territory of southern Ethiopia,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the extremist group leads its members from its headquarters in kolfi Qranyo area in the capital Addis Ababa, and that they were “plundering the citizens’ money” in the Jima district of Oromiya region.

Tripoli plans military offensive in Wershefana area following helicopter crash
The Tripoli government intends to launch a military assault in the Wershefana district in response to Monday’s helicopter crash west of Tripoli killing all those on board which included top ranking Libya Dawn military officials.

Its chief of general staff, Major General Abdussalam Obeidi has declared the area a military zone, advised civilians to leave it, and has called for “revolutionaries” to mobilise and join the fight.

The helicopter was shot down near Maya, west of Janzour. It was on its way to Zawia and was carrying the body of Nureddin Kilani, the brother of the late Zawia military leader Mohamed Kilani back for burial. He is said to have been shot in earlier action against the Wershfana, and taken to Tripoli for treatment but died there. Another report, however, says he died in hospital in Turkey.

The body was being accompanied by senior Libya Dawn figures, including the head of Zawia Martyrs’ Brigade, Suhaib Shaba, and the the GNC’s western region commander Colonel Hussain Budaya. Also said to have died in the crash was the son of Mohamed Kilani, himself killed last year in fighting with the Wershefana.

Zawia municipality and the General National Congress have both declared three days mourning.

Nigerian Troops Rescue 338 People Held by Boko Haram
[AnNahar] Nigerian troops have rescued 338 people, mainly women and kiddies, held by Boko Haram

Islamists around the group's Sambisa forest stronghold in the restive northeast, the army said Wednesday.

"The (army) unit ... rescued 338 persons that were held captive by the terrorists," the army said of an operation on Tuesday, adding that 192 of the survivors were children and 138 women.

The raid targeted "suspected Boko Haram terrorist camps at Bulajilin and Manawashe villages" on the edge of the Sambisa forest, the army said in a statement, adding that troops killed 30 suspected jihadists and seized a cache of arms and ammunition.

The Nigerian military has in recent months claimed a string of successes against Boko Haram in its quest to end the hardline Islamist group's six-year insurgency.

The air force said in a statement on Tuesday it had launched strikes on the group's vehicle and fuel depots "in a renewed drive to further degrade" its assets.

Air force chief Sadique Abubakar was quoted as saying the strikes were helping "pave the way for the final onslaught" by Nigerian ground forces.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power in May on a pledge to crush Boko Haram, has given his military commanders until the end of December to defeat the group, whose insurgency has killed at least 17,000 people and forced more than 2.5 million to flee their homes since 2009.

bad boys, local officials said Wednesday.

"Thirteen people were executed and three others suffered gunshot wounds in an attack by Boko Haram Tuesday evening in Ala village," Malam Ligari, a local official in the Diffa region, which has been repeatedly attacked by the jihadists, told AFP.

"This was a fast operation," conducted between "8:00 and 10:00 pm (19:00 and 21:00 GMT)," Ligari said, adding that the assailants came on foot after crossing the Yobe river -- which forms a natural border between Niger and Nigeria in the area -- by canoe.

"Boko Haram bully boyz came in number. They burned cars, houses, stores," the private radio station Anfani reported.

Since February, the Diffa region has suffered several attacks blamed on the Nigeria-based Islamist radicals, including one in June in which 38 people were killed, including 10 children.

On Tuesday, Niger's parliament voted to extend for another three months the state of emergency declared in February in the region.

"The biggest problem we have is controlling the border with Nigeria," Niger's Interior Minister Hassoumi Massaoudou told deputies.

Security officials and witnesses in the southern Yemeni city of Aden say militants have bombed a local college, following previous threats against the school.

The officials said militants on a motorcycle tossed a bomb Wednesday onto the sprawling campus of the University of Aden. It shattered windows at the College of Commerce and Economics. Terrified students ran for safety.

There was no immediate word on casualties or a claim of responsibility.

A university official has told the AP that militants had vowed to attack the school if it did not gender-segregate classes.

Coalition planes "parachuted three shipments of arms and ammunition to help our fighters in southwest Taez," a source told AFP, adding they included RPG launchers and a variety of weapons.

The airdrop took place before dawn on Tuesday and Wednesday, he said.

Clashes raged Wednesday in Taez between the rebels and fighters allied with President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, another military source said.

A Saudi-led Arab coalition carried out a fresh wave of air strikes Wednesday on Taez, as fierce fighting raged on the ground in the city which has remained in the hands of fighters loyal to Hadi.

In the evening, coalition warplanes bombed rebel positions in the west and south of Taez, according to a military source.

A main target in the evening was the headquarters of the 35th Brigade, near the central prison and a strategic hill overlooking a residential area.

The two men "fought within the ranks of IS from 2014 to 2015 in Syria and Iraq," the front man said.

Fighting in foreign wars is a criminal offense in the predominantly Muslim but secular country.

Local media had previously reported numerous cases of Azerbaijani citizens fighting for jihadists in Syria and Iraq, including within the Jaish al-Muhajireen wal Ansar group consisting mostly of Islamists from the former Soviet Union.

The Jaish al-Muhajireen wal Ansar in September declared allegiance to al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, Al-Nusra.

Since September 2014, Azerbaijan has reportedly arrested at least 38 men for fighting alongside the IS group, which has seized large swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq.

In July and August, Azerbaijan sentenced 13 men to up to 15 years in prison for fighting in Syria alongside IS.

in the first nine months of 2015, according to figures by the Prime Ministry's Office of Public Diplomacy.

During the period, police seized 2,700 kilograms of chemicals used for making explosive substances, one rocket launcher, 13 long-barreled weapons, 40 guns, 21 hunting rifles, 40 hand grenades and six handmade explosives in operations against ISIL.

Many attacks were prevented thanks to operations which are especially focused on border provinces, according to the public diplomacy office.

More than 1,000 ISIL suspects have been detained in operations, the prime ministry said. On Oct. 20, Justice Minister Kenan Ipek announced that 1,673 ISIL suspects were tossed into the calaboose.

Along with ammunition, 96 mobile phones and hundreds of SIM cards, which were procured with fake identities, were also seized in operations.

Earlier this week, the Istanbul Police Department launched 27 simultaneous raids in the Sultanbeyli, Pendik and Ümraniye districts of Istanbul against ISIL and seized printed and digital organizational documents. Police detained 21 people, including seven children, in the operations.

In the Central Anatolian province of Konya, 30 people were detained, including one woman, in police raids staged in 33 houses with 200 coppers.

In Kocaeli, 14 people were detained in police raids against ISIL.

Meanwhile,

the Turkish Armed Forces increased border measures aiming to hamper the crossings of imported muscle through Turkey. In this context, the army has built a 383-kilometer ditch, 73.6-kilometer embankment and 17.5 kilometers of concrete walls, said the prime ministry, adding that a 107.8-kilometer fence had been built and that 422.6 kilometers of the border had been illuminated.

The army said it has caught 196,763 people that were trying to cross from Turkey to Syria since January 2014 although domestic and foreign critics accuse the government of largely turning a blind eye to jihadist activity in the country.

Turkey continues to attack US ally in Syria
[Rudaw] The Turkish army Tuesday targeted positions of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Gire Spi (Tal Abyad), the YPG claimed in a statement.

"At 1100 hours on October 27, attacking with heavy weapons, the Turkish army targeted the Defense Units' border positions to the west of the town Gire Spi," the YPG said.

"Simultaneously between 1815 hours and 1830 hours, Turkish military forces carried out another offensive with heavy weaponry while conducting unusual movements with Akrep armored vehicles on the border with the city of Gire Spi," it added.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, which fears a strong Kurdish foothold in northeast Syria fueling nationalist sentiments within its own Kurdish population, also attacked Kurdish fighters on Sunday in Gire Spi.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu confirmed Sunday's attack on the YPG in an interview with the Turkish ATV channel on Monday.

"We said, the PYD (the YPG's political wing) will not go west of the Euphrates and that we would hit it the moment it did," the Turkish premier said.

US officials have hailed the YPG as a reliable and effective partner against ISIS. Washington continues to support the group despite Ankara's growing disapproval.

Turkey first attacked the YPG in June, and has expressed its displeasure with the YPG's territorial gains. It has warned that it will not allow the YPG to take over the border town of Jarablus that is currently controlled by ISIS, Nusra Front and other myrmidon groups.

Home Front: WoT
Regime Touts Ability to Screen Syrian Refugees. But Under Oath, FBI Says Opposite
[PJ Media] But during a House Judiciary hearing last Thursday, Comey was asked by Rep. Louie Gohmert about the database the U.S. government maintained to screen Iraqi refugees, including an IED fingerprint database in addition to other intelligence obtained by U.S. forces and the Iraqi government. Despite the extensive database screening Iraqi refugees, U.S. authorities have admitted that possibly dozens of terrorists were admitted into the U.S. under that program, including two Iraqi terrorists living in Bowling Green, Kentucky, who were convicted of attempting to send weapons and money to Iraqi terrorists.

When asked further about the nature of intelligence available to screen Syrian refugees, Comey admitted, contrary to Secretary Johnson, that the Iraqi database -- which possibly admitted dozens of terrorists -- was much more extensive than anything they have for Syria.

Rep. Gohmert pressed further about the ability to screen refugees:

Gohmert: Well, without a good fingerprint database, without good identification, how can you be sure that anyone is who they say they are if they don't have fingerprints to go against?

Comey: The only thing we can query is information that we have. So, if we have no information on someone, they've never crossed our radar screen, they've never been a ripple in the pond, there will be no record of them there and so it will be challenging.

The exchange between Rep. Gohmert and Director Comey on the Syrian refugee issue can be seen at about 2:05 in the video below:

Iraq
New U.S. Combat Mission in Iraq Is Not New
[Bloomberg] When Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced Tuesday that the U.S. would begin "direct action" against Islamic State targets in Syria and Iraq, it sounded like a new mission for U.S. forces in a country where the president has repeatedly insisted Americans would not be engaged in combat operations.

But America's special operations forces have been engaging in these kinds of missions for several months, particularly in the Kurdish-controlled provinces in northern Iraq. And the special operations forces have already built up an extensive infrastructure to support these activities. This casts doubt on the official Pentagon statements that last week's raid was "a unique circumstance."

Since President Barack Obama authorized the first special operations teams to deploy to Iraq in the summer of 2014, the White House has provided few details on the mission and composition of the forces. The Pentagon today refers to the mission for the 3,500 U.S. service members as primarily "advise and assist," with an emphasis on training local forces. But the small and highly classified military footprint in northern Iraq shows the U.S. is more involved in the fight against the Islamic State.

According to U.S. and Kurdish officials, the U.S. now runs an operations center in Irbil staffed by a special operations task force whose work is so classified its name is a state secret. The task force has worked in recent months to identify and locate senior leaders of the Islamic State and participated in the mission last Thursday, in which a member of the Army's Delta Force was killed freeing prisoners from an Islamic State prison in Hawija. (He was the first U.S. soldier killed by enemy fire in the fight against the Islamic State.) These officials asked to speak on background because they were not authorized to disclose sensitive information about U.S. covert activities.

The secret U.S. military presence in northern Iraq doesn't end there. Highly trained American special operations forces known as Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, who help paint targets for airstrikes of Islamic State vehicles, camps and buildings, also operate in northern Iraq. U.S. officials tell us these controllers also work closely with other Western countries and the Iraqis to avoid collisions and direct air traffic for drones and other aircraft to support the mission against the Islamic State.

Clash with IDF on Gaza border leave 2 Palestinians hurt
[IsraelTimes] Rioters throw rocks, Molotov cocktails at soldiers near fence, one said moderately injured after Israeli troops return fire
Just the lads blowing off steam, though it might become something more were the IDF not around.
Paleostinian rioters on Wednesday threw Molotov cocktails and stones at Israeli troops near the Gazoo border fence.

IDF soldiers fired back at the group, injuring two, Israel Radio reported. No soldiers were maimed.

Gazoo Health Ministry front man Ashraf al-Qidra told the Paleostinian news agency Ma'an that Israeli soldiers fired at Paleostinian protesters east of the Bureij refugee camp in the central Gazoo Strip, injuring one in the leg.

The injured man was taken to Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in moderate condition, the report said.

Wednesday was the latest clash between Gazooks and IDF troops in recent weeks. Paleostinians from Gazoo have demonstrated near the border in solidarity with West Bank Paleostinians, and have broken through the border fence with Israel on several occasions.

During a visit to the IDF's Gazoo Division headquarters in the Western Negev last week, IDF officials told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the security situation at the Israel-Gazoo border was "under control."

IDF doubles units deployed in Gush Etzion
[Jpost] In light of the continuous spate of Paleostinian knife attacks on Israelis in the Gush Etzion junction area, the IDF has doubled the number of units securing the area.

Military sources told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday that the move is part of a wider effort by the Judea and Samaria Division and Central Command to protect civilians from knife terrorism plaguing the Gush Etzion junction very frequently in recent days.

"We are preparing for this wave of terrorism to become prolonged, and we are preparing for the potential of an escalation," one of the sources said. "We are adjusting the way we activate forces to deal with knife attacks."

Col. Roman Gofman, commander of the IDF's Gush Etzion Brigade, issued instructions to step up patrols around a gas station in the area, and at other spots prone to knife attacks.

Concrete blocks have been set up around bus stops and hitchhiking posts, and cameras, which dot the area, help the IDF investigate past incidents and evaluate the security situation.

The Gush junction is an area where Jews and Paleostinians frequently interact, making it a terrorism hot spot in the West Bank.

Israeli stabbed in Gush Etzion junction attack

[Ynet] Woman moderately maimed, attacker apprehended around half an hour after attempted stabbing near Hebron.

A 40-year-old Israeli woman was stabbed and moderately maimed at Gush Etzion junction on Wednesday afternoon, according to MDA. The attacker was soon apprehended.

A large number of security forces made their way to the scene, where the woman had been maimed in a shopping area.

Only about half an hour earlier, a Paleostinian man attempted to stab a group of soldiers near the entrance of Tel Ramadia in Hebron on Wednesday afternoon, and was consequentially shot and killed.

The soldiers from the Givati Brigade, noticed the man pulling a knife during a typical security inspection at the entrance to the neighborhood, and managed to shoot the assailant before he could stab them.

The Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, aligned city of Hebron has become the most recent flashpoint in the current wave of violence, with several attacks and stabbing attempts having taken place in the city.

Syria rebels advance in Hama
ARA News

ALEPPO – Subsequent to fierce clashes with pro-regime forces, Syrian rebel groups reported new gains on Wednesday in the northern countryside of Hama, central Syria, military sources reported.

Rebel fighters of the Army of Conquest (Jaish al-Fatih) seized control of several villages and towns in the area after fierce clashes with pro-Assad forces.

Speaking to ARA News in Hama suburb, rebel commander Mohammed Naser confirmed that fighters of the Army of Conquest were able to destroy three tanks belonging to the regime’s army after targeting them with Tao missiles.

“One tank was destroyed in the town of Lahaya and two others were bombed near the town of Morik,” he said, pointing out that fierce clashes centered in the outskirts of Morik.

Seven pro-regime soldiers and ten rebel fighters were killed in the exchange of artillery shelling in the area, according to Naser.

This coupled with several air raids by the pro-regime warplanes on rebels’ positions north of Hama and south of Idlib.

At least four civilians were killed and dozens more wounded in the airstrikes, local sources told ARA News. Similar attacks hit the villages of Karnaz, Kafr Sijna, Kafr Nabudah and Rahjan, without reports of casualties.

Russian Warplanes Hit Record 118 Syria Targets in 24 Hours
[AnNahar] Russian warplanes have struck 118 "terrorist" targets in Syria over the past 24 hours, its highest daily total yet, the defense ministry said Wednesday, attributing the rise to fresh intelligence.
Question is whether the Rooshuns can maintain the up-tempo operations. Maintenance is a bear...
Russian jets hit 118 targets during 71 sorties over the provinces of Idlib, Homs, Hama, Aleppo, Damascus and Latakia, said the defense ministry.

It was the highest one-day tally since the Kremlin began its bombing campaign on September 30.

The previous record was set on Monday when Moscow said it had struck 94 "terrorist" targets in Syria.

The defense ministry released no information on Tuesday.

"The number of sorties has gone up," the ministry said in a statement.

"This is due to an increase in intelligence data," he said, adding that targets had been "confirmed via various channels."

The strikes destroyed a command post near the town of Talbisseh in Homs province that belonged to al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front, said the ministry.

Among the other targets was a base in Aleppo province used to control a "terrorist" weapon supply route which was "destroyed," along with the vehicle-mounted anti-aircraft systems that were protecting it, it said.

In Sahl al-Ghab valley, which lies between the provinces of Hama and Idlib, the warplanes hit a "camouflaged supply base", causing an kaboom that also destroyed trucks parked some 500 meters away.

Russian forces also hit a command and communications post of Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
(Army of Islam) group near Mesraba, a town north-east of Damascus, and "completely destroyed" a command post in Salma, Latakia, after discovering it with unmanned aerial vehicles.
