Insane Demand For Guns Crushes Expectations
[Daily Caller] President Barack Obama's impending executive action on gun control has caused an insane spike in gun sales, according to data from manufacturer Smith & Wesson.

In fact, the sales have been so explosive that merchants are having a difficult time keeping guns in stock, the company notes. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average tanked by 1.6 percent, gun companies posted stock increases. Smith & Wesson shares finished Monday at 5.9 percent higher. Sturm Ruger, a competitor of Smith & Wesson, posted gains of 2.9 percent.

Some analysts speculate that there's a definite link between Obama's expected gun control announcement and increased sales, a trend which has periodically repeated itself through the Obama's two stints in the White House. Smith & Wesson confirmed in a press release that demand has shot through the roof since Obama took office in 2009.

#1  What is NOT mentioned in the article is the second order effect of a decline in quality control. S&W has a lifetime warranty. Some of the others, not so much. Sending a firearm back to the manufacturer for work can be very costly and time consuming.

I recommend the following:

1. Do your product and warranty research prior to buying.
2. Rent the weapon you plan to own from a reputable range and run a box or two of ammo through prior to buying. Most places don't do 'returns' on firearms.
3. Inspect the weapon carefully prior to buying, especially a used weapon.
4. Ask about firearms safety and training classes. Training is always helpful, and a 'certificate of training' might prove handy should you ever have to use the weapon.

#2  I'd say it's VERY sane. A recognized threat from a dictatorial executive to stomp on 2nd Amendment rights and the Constitution? A rational response

#3  The second amendment ultimately exists as a guarantee that Obama can't do the same to any of the other Rights embedded in the Constitution.

Africa North
Is Sirte the New capital of the 'Islamic Caliphate'?
[Al Ahram] Security threats in Libya are increasingly a burden on regional and international security. Alongside politico-security festivities between different local actors, Libya has also witnessed the expansion of the Islamic State

This situation did not lead to the weakening of IS in Syria and Iraq, but rather offered an arena for the bad boy group in North Africa.

Arabia
Riyadh's provocation
[DAWN] IT is difficult to imagine what exactly the Saudi authorities were thinking when they decided to put Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr to the sword at the turn of the year, alongside 46 other men, while simultaneously announcing an end to the barely heeded ceasefire in Yemen.

It's not just Iran that had warned of repercussions in the event of al-Nimr's execution, after he was sentenced to death in 2014. UN Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon pitched in with a plea for clemency and Amnesia Amnesty International declared the trial that led to his conviction to have been a farce.

This wasn't a grievous error, though. It was a deliberate provocation. The Saudis were mightily miffed, just like Israel, by the West's nuclear deal with Iran. Any effort to prove that it was deeply flawed would therefore make strategic sense. What would be more appropriate, in the context, than stirring it up into a lather of fury?

That's not the only context, though. The Saudis are displeased by the way things are going in Syria, with Russia pitching in on behalf of Bashir al-Assad and the West seemingly inclined to think this might be its best bet in combating the krazed killer Islamic State

group. The fact that Nimr vehemently opposed Assad appears not to have been taken into consideration.

Or at least it wasn't enough to vindicate his ostensibly pro-democracy stance, which put him on a collision course with Riyadh -- specifically in the context of Bahrain, where an intervention by Soddy Arabia

India-Pakistan
After Pathankot
[DAWN] THERE is much that is uncertain about the immediate state of India-Pakistain relations, but at least one thing is clear: for all the outstanding, bilateral issues, terrorism has forced its way to the front again. At the very highest and official levels, both sides continue to be measured and cooperative in their responses. The telephone call yesterday between prime ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
suggests that the political establishments at least are willing to see if the diplomatic approach can yield results. Whatever evidence, if any, India finds about the involvement of Pakistain-based actors in the Pathankot IAF base attack should be shared promptly and in full with Islamabad. Then, as Mr Sharif has pledged, Pakistain should investigate urgently, and take action where necessary. Already, though, there has been a public lead provided -- and possibly a gauntlet thrown down to the Pak state. The claim by Syed Sadaqat Husain, a spokesperson for the United Jihad Council, an umbrella jihadi group based in Azad Kashmire, that the UJC is responsible for the Pathankot incident has created several problems for Pakistain.

Whether the UJC did in fact launch the attack or not -- a hitherto unknown branch of the UJC, the National Highway Squad, has been credited with the attack -- the claim will invariably draw yet more scrutiny of anti-India bully boyz based inside Pakistain, and in Kashmire in particular. The UJC leadership, which has with varying degrees of success put together a disparate group of bully boyz over the past two decades, is believed to be politically close to the Pak state, but its role in militancy has been doubtful for many years, particularly since the Musharraf-era freeze on cross-LoC attacks. Has that changed? Or have elements inside the UJC gone rogue? If the state wants to convey that it speaks with one voice and that dialogue resumption between India and Pakistain is the result of a consultative process and consensus decision-making, then it must demonstrate that the UJC claim is being taken seriously. It cannot be that Mr Sharif tells his Indian counterpart that gunnies always try and derail the grinding of the peace processor between the two countries, and then the state here tries to sweep under the carpet the claims of an armed attack made by a group whose leadership is based in Pakistain. If the UJC claim is a ruse, it should be exposed as such. If not, the architects of the Pathankot attack need to be brought to justice.

Nawaz-Modi call: India urges Pakistan to act after Pathankot airbase attack
Because after 96 tries, this time it will surely work.
[DAWN] Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
Tuesday to take "firm and immediate action" against those behind an attack on an Indian Air Force base that left seven soldiers dead.

Modi's office said New Delhi had given Islamabad "specific and actionable information" on the audacious attack, which came just days after a landmark visit to Pakistain by the Indian premier raised hopes of improved relations.

Security officials suspect the gunnies -- all six of whom were killed -- belonged to the Pakistain-based Jaish-e-Mohammed, the group that staged a 2001 attack on the Indian parliament which brought the two countries to the brink of war.

In a statement, Modi's office said PM Nawaz Sharif had telephoned him to discuss the attack on the Pathankot base in the northern state of Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

near the border with Pakistain.

Modi "strongly emphasised the need for Pakistain to take firm and immediate action against the organizations and individuals responsible for and linked to the Pathankot terrorist attack," said the statement.

"Specific and actionable information in this regard has been provided to Pakistain." It said Sharif had given assurances that his government would take "prompt and decisive action".

A statement from PM Nawaz Sharif's office said he conveyed his grief and sorrow to Modi for the lives lost during the Pathankot attack.

Sharif said hard boyz will not be allowed to derail the grinding of the peace processor between the two countries and assured his Indian counterpart that Pakistain will investigate any leads or information provided by the government of India.
