Afghanistan
Sayyaf Suggests Mujahedeen Be Allowed To Help Defend The Country
[Tolo News] Prominent former Jihadi commander Abdul Rasoul Sayyaf on Monday warned the government against side lining the Mujahedeen regarding issues of national interest such as security and national defense.

He called on government leaders to consider a larger role for them to defend national illusory sovereignty and the people.

Speaking at a gathering marking the 27th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, Sayyaf urged government to give the Mujahedeen a part in defending the country in order to help thwart threats against the political system and the country.

Sayyaf said that if the government does not allow the Mujahedeen to help defend the country, then the Mujahedeen will intervene, a move which according to Sayyaf would have negative consequences.

The gathering was also attended by several other Jihadi figures. In their speeches, they accused the government of pushing the Mujahedeen to the sidelines, which according to them has also led to an unprecedented surge on security threats.

"The security situation is getting worse day by day. The system must take our calls into consideration as it is failing to maintain security and failing to push the enemy back. This is just because they (government) have tightened the hands of the Mujahedeen deliberately or in ignorance," Sayyaf said.

He said that the continuation of the current situation could pose serious threats to Afghanistan's stability. He also announced that a plan has been formulated by the Jihadi commanders for security and economic development. This will be shared with the people and the government in the near future, he said.

"If they (government) do not allow the nation to secure its national illusory sovereignty and defend the country, then the responsibility of what could happen tomorrow will be on those who have bound the hands and legs of the people. They (government officials) have their passports in their pockets and whatever happens tomorrow, only the oppressed nation of this country will be burnt in the smoke and fire of the invaders," he said.

He said that government rules the people by force, warning that government must step up efforts and let the people contribute to the security of the country within the framework of the system, otherwise, the people will act.

"If people are not allowed to mobilize against the enemy to defend the country, then the people will be compelled to take action and defend their soil, this will undoubtedly lead to disorder and we do not support it," Sayyaf said.

Referring to recent efforts for brokering peace talks with the Taliban, Sayyaf said that these talks could be a conspiracy to divide the country as there is no clear indication of whom we are negotiating with.

"Anyone who engages in the talks must be a true son of this soil. We support any move for peace. But on condition that the talks are not conducted on the basis of ethnicity, language and geography. I want to urge the Taliban as well not to be fooled by any plot which can disintegrate Afghanistan, the unity of Afghanistan's geography is quite important," Sayyaf added.

Touching on the issue of parliamentary and provincial council elections, Sayyaf said that the timeline for the elections announced by the government was not appropriate.

In addition, some members of the Solidarity and Protection Council of Afghanistan also highlighted the threat emerging from Daesh [Islamic State] and Taliban and raised questions over possible plots.

Rights Body Slams Taliban For High Civilian Death Toll
Why would the Taliban care about the censure of unbelievers?
[Tolo News] The Institute For Human Rights Studies on Monday blasted the Taliban for their role in the high civilian corpse count in Afghanistan, and called on the group to stop spilling to blood of innocent Afghans.

"The civilian corpse count hit unprecedented heights in 2015. We as human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
study institutions blame Taliban Lions of Islam for the corpse count," Laila Jaffary, head of the Institute For Human Rights Studies said.

In addition, the institute called on gangs to value the lives of the civilians during their military campaigns.

"The people of Afghanistan, children and women should no longer be sacrificed for insurgency. I want to call on bully boyz to avoid posing further destruction to the people of Afghanistan and avoid sacrificing their own for a regional game," a member of the Institute for Human Rights Studies Faiz Ahmad Sadaq, said.

The statements come a day after the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Sunday launched its Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict Annual Report 2015 and said that last year they recorded the highest number of civilian casualties in a single year in Afghanistan.

The annual report, produced by UNAMA in coordination with the UN Human Rights Office, shows that increased ground fighting in and around populated areas, along with suicide and other attacks in major cities, were the main causes of conflict-related civilian deaths and injuries in 2015.

Nicholas Haysom, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA said in a statement: "This report records yet another rise in the number of civilians hurt or killed. The harm done to civilians is totally unacceptable."

He went on to say: "We call on those inflicting this pain on the people of Afghanistan to take concrete action to protect civilians and put a stop to the killing and maiming of civilians in 2016."

Meanwhile,
...back at the saw mill, Scarface Al had tied Little Nell to the log and was about to turn on the buzz saw...
speaking at a presser to launch the report, Danielle Bell, Director Human Rights Unit, UNAMA, said conflict-related violence is increasingly impacting Afghan civilians. "Last year, UNAMA documented 3,545 civilian deaths and 7,457 injured (a total of 11,002 civilian casualties), a four percent increase from 2014, and the highest number of total civilian casualties recorded in a single year by UNAMA," she said.

Arabia
UAE court gives four death sentence for supporting ISIS
[Al Arabiya] A top court in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday sentenced four men to death in absentia for joining the militant ISIS group, local media reported on Sunday.

The Dubai-based Gulf News said the four Emiratis whose ages ranged from 18 to 29, were found guilty for joining ISIS and fighting alongside the militant group’s members in Syria.

The official Emirates News Agency (WAM) said the death sentences were handed out by the Federal Supreme Court, headed by Judge Mohammed Al-Tunaiji, who issued a series of verdicts against six other defendants accused of supporting ISIS or the Iran-backed Houthi militia group in Yemen.

Judge Tunaiji gave three defendants a 10-year jail term each, two others received five-year in prison and one landed a three-year sentence. However, one was found not guilty.

WAM described the defendants as local Emirati nationals and others who hailed from Gulf and Arab countries.

They “were charged with travelling to join the terrorist organization [ISIS] after entering the territory of an Arab country and taking part in various activities of the organization,” WAM said.

The defendants were accused of “promoting the group at a public place, providing funds, managing a website to promote the organization’s ideas, and damaging the state’s reputation and prestige and insulting the state’s symbols,” it added.

Meanwhile, the three defendants – two Yemenis and one Omani - were found guilty for funding the Houthis and “providing them with chemicals, communication equipment, among other supplies,” Gulf News reported.

Abu Dhabi’s Federal Supreme Court does not allow international media access to such trials.

The sentences come after the trial of an Emirati man, claimed to be the local ISIS leader in the Gulf country in late January.

The United Arab Emirates is a member of the U.S.-led coalition that has been bombing ISIS since September 2014.

UAE authorities have enacted tougher anti-terror legislation, including harsher jail terms and even introducing the death penalty for crimes linked to religious hatred and “takfiri groups.”

Pakistan joins 'Thunder of the North' military exercise in Saudi Arabia
[DAWN] Armed forces from around 20 countries including Pakistain and Malaysia are gathering in northern Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Sunday for "the largest, most important military manoeuvres" ever staged in the region, the official news agency SPA reported.

The "Thunder of the North" exercise involving ground, air, and naval forces sends a "clear message" that Riyadh and its allies "stand united in confronting all challenges and preserving peace and stability in the region", SPA said.

Saudi Arabia is currently leading a military campaign against Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...

Bangladesh
14-party rally rails against Khaleda, Pakistan
[Dhaka Tribune] "Pak Khaleda, Pakistain-e chole ja," protesters belonging to the Awami League-led 14-party alliance chanted in Russel Square on Dhanmondi's road 32, on Monday afternoon.

The slogan meaning "Pak Khaleda, go back to Pakistain," is aimed at BNP Chairperson the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
whose questioning of the number of Bangalees killed during the 1971 Liberation War has been widely criticised.

After forming a human chain at around 3:30pm leaders of the 14-party alliance, together with activists and supporters, spilled over into the streets at the busy intersection.

The rallies had been organised by the 14-party alliance to protest against Pakistain's "repeated attempts to interfere in Bangladesh's internal politics" and against Khaleda's remarks doubting the number of Bangalees martyred during the Liberation War.

Simultaneous rallies were held on Dhanmondi's road 27 and at 12 other points in the capital.

China-Japan-Koreas
UN Expert: Kim Jong Un Could Be Held Accountable for Crimes Against Humanity
[VOA News] A United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
expert on human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
in North Korea is warning the country's supreme leader, Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
, could be held accountable for alleged crimes against humanity.
Yeah. Him and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Send someone to arrest him.
Marzuki Darusman, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea, issued the warning in a report made public Monday.

The U.N. Human Rights Council should advise Kim and other senior North Korean leaders "they may be investigated, and if found to be responsible, held accountable for crimes against humanity committed under their leadership," the report said.

Darusman was the head of a special U.N. investigation into North Korea's human rights abuses, which are considered to be among the worst in the world. The so-called Commission of Inquiry accused the North of committing atrocities not seen since the Nazi era.

The panel also called for North Korean leaders to be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
. But that would require action by the U.N. Security Council. China and Russia, which are veto-wielding members of the council, oppose such a move.

The secretive North Korean government is accused of running a massive network of political prisons, as well as carrying out murder, enslavement, torture, imprisonment, rape, forced abortions and other sexual violence.

In his latest report, Darusman said Pyongyang does not appear to have made any improvements on rights issues since the U.N. investigation ended two years ago. The U.N. Human Rights Council will review the report next month.

Australia busts $900 million of meth smuggled in bra inserts, art supplies
[USATODAY] Australian authorities found $900 million worth of liquid methamphetamine smuggled inside gel bra inserts and art equipment, one of the largest drug busts in the nation's history.

The investigation began after the raiding of a shipping container in December revealed 86 boxes of bra inserts holding 190 liters of liquid meth, also called "ice," the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

A joint effort between five Australian agencies reportedly later found 530 more liters of liquid meth hidden in art supplies--including paint-by-numbers kits for children-- across five storage units in suburban Sydney.

"This has resulted in 3.6 million individual hits of ice being taken off our streets," New South Wales justice Michael Keenan told news hounds Monday, putting estimated value of the drugs at $1.26 billion Australian dollars.

Authorities charged three Hong Kong nationals and one Chinese national related to involvement in the importation and manufacturing of the drugs.

Three arrests linked to the art supplies came on January 25, including a 37-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman--both from Hong Kong--as well as a 59-year-old male Chinese national, the Herald reported.

Prosecutors: most suspects in Cologne New Year's Eve attacks are refugees
BERLIN (AP) -- Prosecutors say most suspects in a series of robberies and sexual assaults in Cologne
...a lovely city in Germany. They invented perfume there...
at New Year's are refugees.

Cologne prosecutor Ulrich Bremer says 73 suspects have so far been identified, of whom 12 are linked to sexual assaults.

He says recent reports describing only three of the suspects as refugees are "total nonsense."

Bremer told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Monday that "the overwhelming majority of persons fall into the general category of refugees."

Some entered Germany saying they wanted to apply for asylum, others have formally filed an application.

Among the 15 suspects who are in jug is a Moroccan asylum-seeker who entered Germany in November.

A total of 1,075 criminal complaints have been filed, including 467 alleging crimes of a sexual nature ranging from insults to rape.
Bretbart has the back story on those recent reports here.

Anti-Migrant Force Builds In Europe, Hurting Merkel's Quest
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] So where should the next impenetrable razor-wire border fence in Europe be built?

Hungary's right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban thinks he knows the best place - on Macedonia's and Bulgaria's borders with Greece - smack along the main immigration route from the Middle East to Western Europe. He says it's necessary because "Greece can't defend Europe from the south" against the large numbers of refugees pouring in, mainly from Syria and Iraq.

The plan is especially controversial because it effectively means eliminating Greece from the Schengen zone, Europe's 26-nation passport-free travel region that is considered one of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's most cherished achievements.

Orban's plan featured prominently Monday at a meeting in Prague of leaders from four nations in an informal gathering known as the Visegrad group: Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Visegrad group, formed 25 years ago to further the nations' European integration, is marking that anniversary Monday. Still, it has only recently found a common purpose in its unified opposition to accepting any significant number of migrants.

Iraq
Nearly 5,700 Buildings in Ramadi Damaged, U.N. Report
Since mid-2014, around 5,700 constructions in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi and its outskirts have suffered some level of damage, and almost 2,000 buildings have turned to ruins, the United Nations reported on Monday, citing satellite images.

Ramadi, once home to about 500,000 people, now largely lies in ruins, the report assessing the devastation revealed.

Iraq declared as government forces regained full control of Ramadi after pushing ISIS group fighters out of the city’s outskirts in December, seizing the main government building in the city, the provincial capital of Anbar. But more than six months of fighting shattered most infrastructure and levelled many homes in the city.

The impact of ISIS bomb attacks and U.S.-led coalition air strikes has been documented by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, which compared satellite imagery collected last month with images from July 2014.

The analysis showed more than 3,200 structures in the city centre have been affected, with 1,165 destroyed. Those figures nearly double when outlying areas are included.

It is not clear what percentage of Ramadi has been affected, but the imagery shows that all central districts and almost every block have incurred at least some damage.

Also, local estimates said that more than 60 percent of Anbar’s provincial capital had been destroyed by constant air bombardment and the scorched-earth practices of ISIS fighters in retreat.
A U.N. statement described the analysis as preliminary and said it had not been validated in the field. Baghdad has not yet declared the city safe for return; given that Iraqi Special Forces clashed with militants in some districts as recently as last week.
“The level of destruction in Ramadi is as bad as anything we have seen in Iraq,” said Lise Grande, the U.N.’s deputy special representative to Iraq after last week’s preliminary assessment of the damage. Iraqi and coalition officials estimated that rebuilding Ramadi could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

The cash-strapped government in Baghdad is seeking support from international donors to help rebuild Ramadi, the largest city retaken from ISIS. But it must first clear explosives planted by the militants in streets and buildings – an effort which also requires funding that Iraq lacks.

The United Nations is working with local authorities on plans to rebuild health, water and energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, displaced residents are waiting in camps or rented accommodations in other parts of the country.

Securing the city is expected to take months before reconstruction can begin.

Samarra's Sunnis fear displacement a decade after Iraq shrine attack
[REUTERS] Sunlight once again glints off the golden dome of one of Shi'ite Islam's holiest shrines, almost fully restored 10 years after suspected al Qaeda holy warriors blew it up in northern Iraq.

But as Shi'ite influence grows in Samarra, shops and homes around al-Askari shrine owned by residents of the mainly Sunni city have been shut, amidst fears of forced displacement and splintering of the area along sectarian lines.

The shrine's destruction on February 22, 2006 sparked a wave of Dire Revenge attacks that killed tens of thousand of people and plunged Iraq into a sectarian civil war. No one was injured in the bombing itself.

In the attack, gunnies in police uniforms burst into the shrine, tied up guards and planted explosives that brought down its 100-year-old dome, one of the Muslim world's biggest and best known. Another blast in 2007 destroyed two golden minarets.

Communal blood-letting has abated, but the Samarra residents' concerns reflect those of many in Iraq's Sunni minority, who fear expulsion from sensitive areas they say the ascendant Shi'ite majority wants to control.

Sunnis point to violence like last month's attacks in eastern Diyala province as proof they are still not safe more than a decade after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, a Sunni from north of Samarra.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood cuts ties to Egypt's parent group
[AlAhram] Jordan's branch of the Moslem Brüderbund has formally cut ties with the region-wide movement based in Egypt, a front man said Monday.

The decision is the latest setback for the wider Brotherhood, once seen as the main political beneficiary of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings but hit hard in recent years by government crackdowns.

The Jordanian branch has undergone several splits over the past year, with breakaway groups emphasizing a domestic agenda.

The original core group decided late last week, in a meeting of its main decision-making body, or Shura Council, to change its bylaws and cut ties with the parent movement, said a front man, Moath Khawaldeh.

"On Thursday, the Shura Council met and amended the basic law, disconnecting the Moslem Brüderbund in Jordan from Egypt," he said.

Egypt's Brotherhood, from which ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi hails, is declared a terrorist organization in the country.

Khawaldeh said the decision is part of reform efforts ahead of internal elections next month.

Jordanian analyst Ibrahim Gharaibeh said he believes the core group came to see its parent movement as an increasing liability. "This led to political concerns (for the group) in Jordan and the group's ability to survive," he said.

Three relatively pragmatic groups have broken away from the more hawkish Brotherhood core group and its political arm, the Islamic Action Front

, over the past year.

Disagreements focused on whether to participate in elections in Jordan and the nature of ties with the parent movement and the Lion of Islam group Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, the Brotherhood branch in the Paleostinian territories.

Hezbollah Operates Air Defense Missiles against Zionist Warplanes: Israel
[ALMANAR.LB] The Zionist entity asserted that Hezbollah has obtained sophisticated Russian air defense systems after managing to transmit them from Syria to Leb despite the Israeli military measures to frustrate the smuggling operations.

The Lebanese newspaper, Al-Akhbar, quoted senior military sources in the Israeli army as saying that Hezbollah did operate the air defense missiles and direct the missiles towards the Zionist warplanes.

According to the same sources, Hezbollah is implicitly threatening "Israel" of downing its warplanes over the Lebanese airspace.

The Israeli sources noted that Hezbollah air defense technology is capable of detecting the Zionist jets, adding that the Zionist military pilots, who got accustomed to flying freely over Leb, are facing new challenges.

Since Russia started its military operations in Syria, Hezbollah commenced setting and directing his radars and air defense missiles, deployed in Leb, to track the Israeli jets, the Zionist sources pointed out.

#2  assuming that this is not exaggeration, Hezbollah has augmented itself

they really they don't need it that much - they already have 100k missiles of various types

on the other hand Hezbollah has lost at least 1000 fighters in Syria (probably it is over 2000) and its prime financial patron, Iran is suffering from low oil prices

so this article by their propaganda org Al Manar is probably part of their morale boosting campaign
