Afghanistan
Offensive Ops And Night Raids Proving Effective
Afghan Defense Ministry (MoD) said on Monday that offensive operations and night raids are proving highly effective in military operations to clear insurgents around the country.

The Afghan Special Forces said battles in Baghlan province are being managed by Pakistani generals from across the Durand Line and large numbers of foreign terrorists are fighting against government forces in the province.

"With the support of commando forces, air forces and Resolute Support mission forces we have been able to bring heavy losses to the enemy in Joye Nawo, Aka Khail area and in Salangi village and we cleared the Salangi village of enemies," said Ahmad Jawed Salim a military spokesman in the province.

Meanwhile security forces in Kunduz province said that at least 2,500 Taliban members, including 200 affiliated militant groups, are active in the province and are fighting Afghan forces.

"The information we received is that about 2,500 Taliban are activate in the districts of the province but their numbers are changing as every day they are facing causalities," said Mohiuddin Ghori Pamir, ANA's 20 division commander.

The ministry said that currently the Afghan forces are engaged in fighting against the armed opposition in thirteen provinces across the country and talked about the achievements in those operations.

In the past few days, about 69 insurgents were killed and 20 others wounded in operations, said the ministry.

The ministry stated that insurgents suffered a heavy casualty toll in operations in Dande Ghore district of Baghlan province on Wednesday. They said 29 militants had been killed.

"Fifteen night raids were conducted by our special forces last night," said Dawolat Waziri a defense ministry spokesman.

Currently, massive operations are underway around the country as heavy fighting continues.

Gen. Salangi slams ISI for its destructive role in Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The former senior deputy interior minister for security Gen. Ayub Salangi slammed Pakistain’s military intelligence -- Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) for supporting the anti-government armed Death Eater groups in Afghanistan.

Gen. Salangi was speaking during his farewell ceremony in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) compound, a day after President Ghani nominated General Abdul Rahman Rahman to replace him as Senior Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs.

He reiterated his stance towards ISI’s interference in Afghanistan by taking into his official Twitter account which he was usually using to provide regarding the security situation of the country.

"ISI continues to play a destructive role in Afghanistan. ISI is responsible for bloodshed, chaos and destruction in Afghanistan," a Twitter post he published earlier today reads.

The four star general further added "Without support of ISI ,Taliban can’t be this strong. ISI’s support for Taliban, Haqqanis and other terrorist groups is very clear."

He also urged the leaders of the government of national unity to refrain from taking the security institutions to political affairs, saying "As I said in my farewell ceremony at MOI,I urge leaders of NUG not to politicize ANSF, police in particular Sadly, I experienced the politicization of police in last 16 months or so. ANSF are the real heroes. They need all the support this critical time."

The remarks by Gen. Salangi comes as the Afghan officials have long been criticizing the Pakistain’s spy agency for interfering the internal affairs of Afghanistan, besides sheltering the anti-government elements inside the Pakistain.

The National Security Adviser Hanif Atmar said late in November last year that the Pakistain-based Haqqani Terrorist Network and Taliban’s Quetta Council (Shura) still operate against Afghanistan from their safe havens within the Pak soil.

Atmar further added that the government of Pakistain has not taken important steps to prevent the activities of the two groups in their soil.

The remarks by Atmar followed almost three months after the Presidential Palace slammed Pakistain for the existence of the Haqqani network command and control in Pakistain.

"The Islamic Theocratic Republic of Afghanistan believes that one of the major differences between Afghanistan and Pakistain is regarding the presence of terrorist groups, specifically the Haqqani Network in Pak soil," a statement by the Palace said earlier in September last year.

UK troops to bolster Libyan border
LONDON: Britain is sending a training team of around 20 soldiers to Tunisia to help stop people illegally entering from neighboring Libya, Defence Minister Michael Fallon told parliament on Monday.
So they're actually bolstering the Tunisian border...
“A training team of some 20 troops from the 4th Infantry Brigade is now moving to Tunisia to help counter illegal cross-border movement from Libya in support of the Tunisian authorities,” he said.

Britain should not have a “combat role” in Libya but would be ready to provide military advice and training for the Libyan government if asked to do so and only with the prior consent of British MPs.

He denied that British pilots embedded with other air forces had taken part in missions over the country.

Libya has had rival parliaments and governments since 2014, after a militia alliance overran Tripoli.

Arabia
Houthis recruiting African fighters
A top military Yemeni official said the Iran-backed Houthi militias and their ally’s forces have started recruiting “mercenaries,” coming mostly from African countries, Al Arabiya News Channel reported Monday.

Deputy Chief of Staff Gen. Nasir al-Tahiri said the move by the Houthis and forces allied to to the toppled Ali Abdullah Saleh was to buttress their weakening fronts at the capital Sanaa and the northwestern governorate of Saada.

Meanwhile, military sources said Saleh has ordered Republican Guards forces to withdraw from central al-Baydha, southwestern Ibb and Dhammar (west of al-Baydaha) to be consolidated in Sanaa as battles heat up.

It is not the first time that an abroad force is helping with the militias in Yemen.

Last week, the internationally recognized Yemeni government said it has evidence that the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah is backing the Houthi militia group.

President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi’s internationally recognized government has declared Aden the country’s provisional capital after the Houthis and their allies drove it out of Sanaa and much of northern Yemen since September 2014.

The rebels controlled Aden for months before government loyalists pushed them out in July.

Because of the unrest gripping Aden, Hadi himself and many senior officials in his government spend most of their time in Riyadh, which has led an anti-rebel coalition since March 26 last year.

China-Japan-Koreas
Japan to supply Philippines with military equipment
Japan will sign an accord with the Philippines to allow Tokyo to supply military equipment to Manila, the first such Japanese defense pact in a region where both have expressed alarm over China's island-building and other aggressive acts in disputed waters.
I've been waiting for this, though given Japan's rather complicated history with the Philippines, I actually thought it would be the South Koreans who would start supplying "defensive" equipment to Manila. But perhaps the ROK doesn't want to anger the Chinese that much just yet.
Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Saturday that the agreement he will sign on Monday with the Japanese ambassador in Manila is not directed against any country but aims to address gaps in the underfunded Philippine military's capabilities.

The Asian allies began stepping up defense cooperation "even before the disagreement in the West Philippine Sea," Gazmin said, using the name the Philippine government has adopted for the disputed South China Sea, where its territorial conflict with Beijing has flared in recent years.

"It's not directed against any country," he said in what appeared to be an effort to avoid provoking any hostile Chinese reaction.

The Asian neighbors have openly brought their security and political ties to new levels, including by holding joint naval search and rescue drills near the disputed South China Sea last year that angered Beijing.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have exchanged visits and vowed to intensify defense cooperation, sparking talks about a possible security pact that will allow Japanese forces to hold larger drills with Filipino troops in the Philippines. The Philippines has signed such visiting forces accords with the United States and Japan.

France Begins Destruction of Half 'Jungle' Migrant Camp
[An Nahar] French authorities began dismantling half of the "Jungle" migrant camp in the northern port city of Calais on Monday, AFP news hounds at the scene said. Two bulldozers and around 20 workers began destroying makeshift shacks, with 30 police cars and two anti-riot vans stationed nearby.

The situation was mostly calm, although one member of the British "No Borders" activist group was placed in durance vile
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
The move was a shock for volunteers and aid workers who have spent months trying to improve conditions in the grim camp, built on a former toxic waste dump on the outskirts of Calais.

"We didn't think that it would happen with so many police. It's infinitely sad to see the waste of so much work that we've done in the past months," said Maya Konforti of the Auberge des Migrants charity.

"These people want to reach Britannia and won't leave. They will end up in even more hardship, particularly in winter," she said.

Thousands have gathered in the shantytown, hoping to sneak aboard lorries and ferries to Britannia.

Local authorities, who have promised that no one will be evacuated by force, say 3,700 people live in the camp, and that between 800 and 1,000 will be affected by the eviction. But charities say a recent census they conducted counted at least 3,450 people in the southern part alone, including 300 unaccompanied children.

The evicted migrants colonists have been offered heated accommodation in refitted containers set up next door to the camp, but many are reluctant to move there because they lack communal spaces and movement is restricted.

They have also been offered places in some 100 reception centers dotted around La Belle France.

Belgium Pushes 600 Migrants Back to France
[An Nahar] Belgium has turned back more than 600 migrants colonists at the French border since reinstating border checks over fears about the destruction of part of the Calais "Jungle" camp, police said Monday.
Moslems: The Closer They Get, The Less You Like 'Em.
In a fresh blow to the EU's Schengen free travel area, Belgium announced the measure last Tuesday to stop migrants colonists currently at Calais crossing into its territory to try to reach Britannia from the port of Zeebrugge.

La Belle France has called the decision "strange."

"Since last Tuesday 619 people have been turned back -- 334 who were already in Belgian territory and 285 at the border," Belgian police front man Peter de Waele told AFP.

Belgium has deployed around 300 police including officers on horseback to enforce the border controls with La Belle France.

La Belle France finally began demolishing part of the so-called Jungle on Monday after a series of legal wrangles, sparking festivities between French riot police and migrants colonists.

Seven Schengen countries including Belgium have reinstated border controls to deal with a record flow of migrants colonists and refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.

Bosnia to shut down Islamist groups after imam threatened
[RFE/RL] Bosnian officials said they will shut down Muslim groups that advocate extremism and refuse to affiliate with the state-recognized Islamic Community organization by March 1. The move to shut down extremist groups came after Daesh issued a death threat earlier in the week against Bosnia's top cleric, Grand Mufti Husein Kavazovic.

Scores of groups have formed outside the official structure in recent years, attracting an estimated 3,000 followers mostly in rural areas. Some pursue radical interpretations of Islam not traditional among Bosnia's nearly two million Muslims. Police say such groups have become hotbeds of Islamism, sending an estimated 150 members to Syria to join with Daesh. Moreover, police estimate that more than 50 Daesh fighters have returned to Bosnia.

The Islamic Community urged members of such groups to abandon self-proclaimed imams who are luring people into a "monstrous" ideology. Last month, the community sent envoys to the groups urging them to switch to an official congregation.

The Grand Turk
Syria's first astronaut 'defects to Turkey'

General Muhammed Ahmed Faris, a military aviator who became the first Syrian in space, fled to Turkey on Sunday after defecting from President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Before crossing into Turkey, Faris visited the headquarters of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo in a show of solidarity with rebel forces battling Assad's troops in Syria's biggest city, it said.

Anatolia said it was the fourth attempt to defect by Faris, who joined a Soviet crew on the orbiting space station Mir in 1987.

13 corpses discovered under rubble in Turkey's Cizire
[Rudaw] The bodies of 13 civilians were discovered under the rubble in the troubled Kurdish city of Cizire in southeastern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
late Saturday in the aftermath of armed festivities between the Turkish army and pro-Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters.

Turkish military forces found the dead bodies of 13 civilians and placed them in mass graves since the corpses were reportedly too deformed and dismembered to be identified.

Despite the cessation of hostilities in Cizire civilian corpses are being found under the rubble of the buildings on a daily basis.

There are military curfews still imposed on a few Kurdish cities in southeastern Turkey where hundreds of civilians, PKK guerrillas and Turkish army soldiers have reportedly been killed.

Turkey officially announced on February 12 that its military operations against PKK fighters in the Kurdish city of Cizire is over.

F-16s needed for counterterror ops, Pakistan tells US
[DAWN] Pakistain said on Monday at the start of strategic talks with the United States that a contentious sale of F-16 fighter jets would strengthen country's ability to mount counter-terrorist operations and promote regional stability.

The US government this month approved the sale of the aircraft, radar and electronic warfare equipment to Pakistain in a deal worth nearly $700 million.

Neighboring India opposes the sale, which has drawn criticism from some US politicians. Congress could block the deal, although such action is rare.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
said he appreciated the US leadership's public assessment that Pakistain uses F-16s effectively against terrorists.

last week told a House committee that Pakistain's existing fleet of F-16s has been critical for its counter-terrorism fight on its western border with Afghanistan.

But Aziz urged the B.O. regime to do more "to bring Congress fully in the picture about the positive steps taken by Pakistain to further our mutual interests and the very significant change in ground realities that has taken place in the past two-and-a-half years,".

Wife of former ISI operative claims Nawaz Sharif received money from Osama Bin Laden
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A new book authored by the wife a former operative of Pakistain’s spy agency has once again made the claim that Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
received money from al-Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who used to be alive but now he's not...
The book, Khalid Khawaja: Shaheed-e-Aman, is authored by Shamama Khalid, the wife of former ISI operative Khalid Khawaja.

"Chief of PML-N Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif received funding from Osama bin Laden, founder of Al-Qaeda, to contest elections against Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
’s led Pakistain People’s Party (PPP) after the end of Zia regime," the book states, as per the report Pakistain’s Dawn news agency.

The book claims that Mr Sharif’s pledge of introducing an Islamic system attracted Khawaja as well as Bin Laden. But even though the Al Qaeda head honcho funded Nawaz Sharif heavily, the latter backtracked from all his promises after coming into power.

Book by slain spy’s wife claims Al Qaeda leader backed Sharif against Benazir Bhutto

The book also carries a note from former ISI director general, retired Lt-Gen Hamid Gul
The nutty former head of Pakistain's ISI, now Godfather to Mullah Omar's Talibs and good buddy and consultant to al-Qaeda's high command...
, which also claims that Khawaja was very close to Nawaz Sharif for some time. The book claims that Abdullah Azzam introduced Khawaja to Bin Laden.

Azzam, who is also known as the ‘father of global jihad’, was a Paleostinian Sunni. Azzam raised funds and recruited jihadis from the Arab world, known as Afghan Arabs. A mentor of Bin Laden, he is said to have persuaded him to come to Afghanistan.

The book claims that Khawaja was killed by a splinter group of the Pak Taliban while he was on a peace mission in the restive tribal areas.

Khalid Khawaja went to North Wazoo along with retired Col Imam and British journalist Asad Qureshi. Khawaja and Col Imam were killed while Qureshi was released in exchange for a ransom.

The Asian Tigers group, that grabbed credit for the crime, had never been heard of before.

The book alleged that the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) were behind the killing of Khawaja and Col Imam.

U.N. Rights Chief Attacks 'Rising Roar of Xenophobia' amid Migrant Crisis
[An Nahar] A growing number of migrants colonists worldwide are fleeing "sickening atrocities" and often encounter cruelty and xenophobia instead of compassion, the U.N.'s rights chief said Monday.

"Conflicts in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere have unleashed a toxic brew of malevolent forces, including the commission of sickening atrocities, and the emergence of human trafficking gangs," Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said.

"These are the circumstances that migrants colonists are increasingly fleeing. The trauma they have suffered is appalling, (and) they deserve the international community's sympathy and compassion," he told the opening of the U.N. Human Rights Council's main annual session.

Instead, they were being met by "a rising roar of xenophobia," he said.

"To keep building higher walls against the flight of these desperate people is an act of cruelty and a delusion," he said.

His comments came against the backdrop of Europe's spiraling migrant crisis, after more than one million people arrived on the continent last year, with the influx showing no sign of abating.

I hope there are some high def cameras trained on the dam if it does break.

Personally I prefer to run like hell before the dam breaks, but that's just me...

#1  Well since the battle for Mosul has supposedly started, if one of the players gets a bit frisky, lots of contingencies need to be considered.

Grout is pumped into the dam almost every day. It still leaks.

#6  A little history of the dam here.

German-Italian Firm. Sounds like the folks constructing it didn't follow engineering recommendations with regards to the dam's foundation.

Also sounds like Chicago/Detroit/New Orleans-style construction techniques.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Senior Israeli Delegation Visits Riyadh
[ALMANAR.LB] Israeli channel 10 reported that a senior Israeli delegation visited the Saudi capital, Riyadh, in the last few weeks.

The Israeli channel meanwhile, said that the delegation was headed by a prominent Israeli official.

The visit was not the first one to the Kingdom, but the Israeli Military Censor prohibits the reports talking about such visits, according to Channel 10.

King Salman
...either the largest species of Pacific salmon or the current Sheikh of the Burnin' Sands, Cutodian of the Two Holy Mosquesand Lord of Most of the Arabians....
Bin Abdulaziz and the Saudi princes are not ashamed by the Israeli ties. However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
they prefer they remain confidential, the report added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had been cornered by the banditti...
the Israeli channel 10 quoted Saudi officials as saying during the meetings that they are not interested in solving the Paleostinian cause. However they want the Zionist entity to stand by Saudi against Iran.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hizbullah Brings Back Corpses of Fighters Including Ali Fayyad's
[An Nahar] Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
was able to bring back the bodies of four of its fighters including that of a senior military commander who was killed in battles in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo last week, reports said on Monday.

Hizbullah recovered the bodies of four of its fighters including that of Ali Fayyad in a special operation carried out in collaboration with the Syrian army in the town of Tal-Hmam, LBCI said.

Ali Fayyad, aka "Alaa of Bosnia", was killed last week in the ongoing festivities with Syrian rebels on the Athrayya-Khanasser road in rural Aleppo, according to reports.

Fayyad was known to have "planned, overseen and led" a key part of the siege that is imposed on the rebels in Damascus' Eastern Ghouta region, they added.

He also played a key role in the capture of the strategic Syrian town of Shebaa that lies on the road to the Damascus international airport.

"Fayyad also led a military operation to besiege the Syrian rebel groups and isolate them in the south of the Syrian capital after having pushed them away from the area of the Sayyida Zeinab (Shiite) shrine," the reports said.

His military tactics also played an important role in "halting the Syrian rebels' advance towards the Syrian coast."

Hizbullah has deployed at least 6,000 gunnies to fight alongside Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
's forces against Islamist-led rebels and jihadists and around 1,000 Hizbullah members have been killed in Syria since the start of the conflict.

The party argues that its intervention, which is controversial in Leb, was necessary to protect the country from murderous Moslem groups and to prevent the fall of Syria into the hands of hostile forces.

#1  1000 fatalities is the official Hizbollah count but this probably includes only those with family that needed to be contacted because there was some sort of contractual arrangment

the actual total is probably closer to 2000

Palmyra: No hint of a ceasefire
This story was filed three days ago by Russian military journalists Dmitri Steshin and Aleksandr Kots, of Komsomol Pravda
[SouthFront] It’s five hours until the ceasefire. We are standing on one of the heights some 7km from Palmyra, an ancient city straddling the Homs–Deir ez-Zor road. In May 2015, ISIS took this UNESCO World Heritage Site. And proceeded to methodically annihilate the architectural relics, blowing up the Allat Lion statue (dating to the 1st Century), Baalshamin and Bel churches (built in 131 and 32 AD), several burial towers from the Roman era…They destroyed everything that could not be carried off for sale on the black market. Or didn’t have value as a fortification.

The militants did not destroy the fortress overlooking Palmyra. Instead they built a fortified observation point there. We can see it well from where we’re standing–powerful, ancient walls over the boulders. All approaches to Palmyra can be observed. And all the hills, including ours. Our hill also has a fortress of sorts, made of rocks, ammunition boxes, and living tents buried among them. Defenses here are held by Hezbollah militants who understand perfectly well the ceasefire will not apply here. ISIS is not covered by the ceasefire, and Palmyra must be liberated. For propaganda reasons, as it will be one of the most resounding victories scored by Syrian forces and their allies and, secondly, liberating Palmyra will open the road all the way to Deir ez-Zor which has been under a total blockade for over three years. Its garrison is being resupplied with food and munitions from the air.
