Nuristan’s Duab district police chief killed in militants ambush
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The district police chief for Duab district of the restive Nuristan province was killed in turbans ambush earlier today, local officials said.

Acting provincial governor for Nuristan province Hafiz Abdul Qayum confirmed the report and said the district police chief was killed in an ambush in eastern Laghman province.

He said Enayatullah was on his way to his house when the turbans ambushed him in Alingar district, leaving the police chief dead and his driver maimed.

No group including the Talibs has so far grabbed credit behind the attack.

This comes as the Taliban led insurgency has been rampant during the recent months across the country despite efforts to end the ongoing violence through reconciliation process.

Laghman and Nuristan provinces are among the relatively volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed turbans are active in a number of its districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

The Talibs have recently attempted to carry out deadly attacks on government institutions in this province but the attack plots were foiled by the security forces.

Shaboobs move to new coastal villages in Puntland
GAROWE, Somalia-Senior Al Shabaab official has delivered religious sermons in the coastal village of Garmaal following a surprise thrust into Garacad on Monday afternoon, Garowe Online reports. Residents reached on phone by GO has confirmed that militants travelling in boats entered the small village on Tuesday morning.

Hundreds of fishers flock to Garmaal—a few kilometers off historic Eyl town-- for fishing activities every year.

Al Shabaab official identified as Saacid Karate called on villagers to cooperate with them, claiming that they are only spreading Islam. Al Qaeda-inspired fighters hoisted their flag in Garacad overnight, local clan elders said.

Militants vacated Garacad in the early hours of Tuesday morning, dividing themselves into groups, according to witnesses.

Locals reported that armed militias on foot took to a road and sneaked through Kulub, an area 10km away from Jariban.

“They are in motion. These men are walking and I can see boats some miles off the coast,” said, elder Ibrahim Yusuf Egal.

Puntland Vice President AbdihakinAbdullahi Haji Omar has meanwhile convened emergency security meeting at the State House to discuss latest developments including Al Shabaab’s sporadic takeovers of areas along the Indian Ocean.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Puntland Security Minister AbdiHirsi Ali (Qarjab) blamed Somalia’s Federal Government (SFG) for fuelling Al Shabaab push in order to distract international attention from the controversial 4.5 power sharing formula. He said, the government will immediately respond to the militancy emerging afresh in Puntland.

“They [Al Shabaab militants] are afraid of us, that’s why they began withdrawing from [Garacad],” Qarjab told a group of reporters in Garowe.

Somali government officials couldn’t be reached for comments on Puntland allegations.

Around two boatloads have arrived in Garacad on Tuesday in what appears to be latest sign of growing Al Shabaab exodus towards Northeast.

Garacad is situated, 260km on the Indian Ocean side of Galkayo. It is yet unclear whether new wave of disembarking insurgents is aimed for reinforcements.

“Arrival of 600+Al Shabaab in Gara’adMudug reflects lax security policy in Puntland,” tweeted political analyst Yusuf M. Hassan, calling for Puntland government to do more in protecting the public.

Puntland has put all security apparatuses on standby in the wake of Al Shabaab seizure of Garacad and other coastal villages, senior security official told Garowe Online under customary condition of anonymity.

Shaboobs kidnap 3 Aid workers in Gedo region
Militants with the Al Qaeda-affiliated Al shabaab have on Tuesday abducted three humanitarian workers at a village near the town of Bardere in Somalia’s south-western Gedo region, source said on Tuesday.

A Red Moon Shaped Thingy Crescent Societies staffer who asked not to be identified disclosed the names of the abducted aid workers as Aden Abdi Aden, head of the organization’s health operation in Gedo, his deputy Abdinasir Abshir and Ali Sugulle.

“The Red Moon Shaped Thingy Crescent Societies staff have been kidnapped after the car they were travelling in came under Al shabaab attack at Sidimo area while on their way to El Wak town,” said the source.

Al shabaab did say any word about the alleged abduction against the aid workers.

Sorman councillor gunned down
Tripoli, 15 March 2016:

A Sorman councillor has been murdered in a drive-by shooting in front of his home in the town.

Khaled Al-Bashir Al-Maghuri was gunned down yesterday as he was leaving for work. Armed men in a vehicle came up the Maseef Road to attack him.

Local journalist Mohamed Balili told this newspaper “ Maghuri worked in the municipality’s health department. He was going to his office as usual when he was targeted. The attackers disappeared. He was a busy guy and everyone liked him”.

The only explanation Balili could find for the councillor’s murder was that ever since he had taken office, he had stood out against corruption

Colleagues in the town’s health services stopped work while family and friends blocked roads in protest at his murder

IS murders another Libyan soldier
The so-called Islamic State (IS) has issued a new video appearing to show a Libyan army soldier being shot dead. The soldier is said to have been captured in Benghazi and then moved to Sirte.

In the video, thought to be filmed on the beach at Sirte, an IS gunman threatens to capture other soldiers in Benghazi and likewise execute them.

Militants stage attack in eastern Libya
Suspected ISIS militants staged an attack on a power and water plant about 80km from the major Sarir oil field in eastern Libya late on Monday, an oil facilities guard said.

Security forces foiled an attempted suicide car bombing by killing the driver, before engaging the attackers in clashes, the guard said. An engineer and a resident also confirmed the attack.

Any threat to the Sarir area would cause particular alarm because more than half of Libya’s remaining oil production comes from the region.

No group immediately claimed the attack, but ISIS fighters have previously targeted against oil installations in Libya, stepping up their campaign against export terminals in the east of the country at the start of this year.

As Libya’s intermittent conflict has dragged on, production has fallen to about 360,000 barrels per day, less than a quarter of its level before the fall of Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.

Militants loyal to the ISIS have exploited political chaos and a security vacuum to establish a foothold in the country. They took control of Sirte last year, and have a presence in several other towns and cities.

The group has caused extensive damage to oil infrastructure, but has not taken over facilities and profited from them as it has in Iraq.

Western powers have been searching for ways to stop ISIS’s expansion in Libya, but have been frustrated by recent delays to the formation of a UN-backed unity government.

Roadside Bomb Kills Three Vigilantes in NE Nigeria
[AnNahar] Three civilian vigilantes on their way to fight Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
were killed and seven others injured when their vehicle hit a landmine, residents told AFP on Tuesday.

The vigilantes from Chul village in Borno state were moving on Monday evening to battle Boko Haram gunnies who had stormed the neighboring village of Huyum when the accident occurred.

"We lost three of our colleagues to a roadside kaboom yesterday evening on their way to repel Boko Haram in Huyum," said Adamu Galadima, a vigilante in the town of Askira Uba.

"The vigilantes were approaching Huyum, which was under Boko Haram attack, when the front tire of their vehicle hit a bomb planted by the attackers", said Galadima, who attended the victims' funerals.

Boko Haram fighters had anticipated that soldiers from Askira or vigilantes from nearby hamlets, would use the roads and planted bombs to slow them down, said Huyum resident Peter Malgwui.

"Vigilantes from Chul heard of the attack and rushed to counter the Boko Haram gunnies when they hit the bomb, killing three and injuring seven," added Malgwui, who fled following the attack.

Boko Haram gunnies travelling in an open van attacked Huyum at about 7:30 pm (1830 GMT), firing indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into the bush, he said.

A woman was rubbed out in the attack while a girl was shot and injured in the leg, he added.

The gunnies were believed to have come from nearby Sambisa forest, which has long been Boko Haram's enclave and base.

On June 8 last year Boko Haram killed 15 in a sweeping raid on Huyum, torching the entire farming village using petrol after looting food supplies and livestock.

Months later, residents who fled that attack began returning to the village to rebuild their homes following a series of successes by the military against Boko Haram.

Nigeria maintains the sustained counter-offensive has left Boko Haram "technically" defeated but sporadic attacks continue, including in northern Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...

Argies sink the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010
[CNN] Buenos Aires Argentina's coast guard says it sank a Chinese fishing vessel that was fishing in a restricted area off the South American country's coast.

The Argentine Naval Prefecture chased and eventually sank the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 vessel after detecting it illegally fishing within the country's exclusive economic zone, officials said Tuesday.

First, according to a statement from the coast guard, warning shots were fired. The Chinese vessel, Argentine authorities said, responded by turning off its lights and deliberately trying to crash.

"On distinct occasions, the offending boat realized maneuvers aimed at colliding with the coast guard, putting not only its own crew at risk, but also the personnel of the coast guard," the statement said.

That's why the coast guard opened fire, Argentine officials said.

The vessel sank, and four people on board -- three crew members and the captain -- were rescued by Argentina's coast guard. Other crew members who'd been on the Chinese vessel boarded another fishing boat that had been traveling nearby, the coast guard said.

Argentina's foreign ministry and the Chinese consulate have been notified, the coast guard said.

Chinese officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Video posted on YouTube by the coast guard shows the Chinese boat listing to one side during the operation.

Syrian Arrested in Sweden for War Crimes
[AnNahar] A 45-year-old Syrian man with a Swedish residency permit has been tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
for alleged war crimes in northern Syria, officials said Tuesday.

Haisam Omar Sakhanh, was arrested on Friday and remanded in jug in Orebro, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Stockholm.

He was detained on Monday night as part of an investigation into acts committed in the province of Idlib but the prosecutor gave no details of the alleged crimes.

The Swedish daily Expressen said he is suspected of having participated in the execution-style murder of seven men in Idlib in April 2012.

A video, originally published by The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
in 2013, graphically shows the execution of the men with their hands tied behind their backs. It is alleged that Sakhanh was one of the executioners.

The video, which was also posted by Expressen, shows a man suspected of being Sakhanh holding a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

The men are bent forward on the ground and at the request of a leader, they were executed.

"During war you have the right to kill in a way that you wouldn't have the right to do when you're not in war," said Kristina Lindhoff Carleson, the prosecutor handling the case, told AFP.

"Still, there are rules that must be followed according to international law. You can't just do any destructive or murderous thing."

Sakhanh was granted official residency in Sweden on October 30, 2013. Before moving to Sweden, he had lived in Milan, Italia since 2002, where he worked as an electrician, according to Italian media reports.

After the civil war in Syria broke out in 2011, Sakhanh became a leading opposition figure who actively protested against the Syrian regime's abuses, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

In February 2012, he was arrested by Italian police after a demonstration at the Syrian embassy turned into a riot. Exiled Syrians stormed the embassy and guards were beaten, according to the newspaper.

Sakhanh was released by police after questioning and then disappeared.

Driver killed in Berlin car bomb may have been victim of 'Mafia-style hit'
[MIRROR.CO.UK] A boom-mobile has went kaboom! in central Berlin killing the driver in what may be a Mafia-style hit.

The huge blast shook the German capital at around 8am this morning.

"Our Sherlocks believe it was an bomb that caused the vehicle to explode," said Berlin police on Twitter.

A picture posted by the force showed the wreckage of a silver Volkswagen Passat estate
...what we in America would call a station wagon...
on the street with its windows blown out and its front end smashed in.

The 43-year-old man killed in the blast was known to the police for drugs and violence offences, according to German newspaper BILD.

His car was registered to a woman in Berlin with a "Turkish-sounding" name, the paper added.

Police have ruled out terrorism and believe the "hit" is more likely linked to organised crime, it was claimed.

Residents in the western district of Charlottenburg were warned to close windows and stay indoors as investigations continued.

A short time later they were reassured the scene is safe.

One dead after raid linked to Paris attacks
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Police found a man dead when they stormed a house in Brussels at the end of a major terror operation Tuesday, several hours after they were shot at during a raid linked to last year’s attacks in Gay Paree, a prosecutor said.

It was not clear whether the dead man was one of the suspects sought in the raid earlier Tuesday in the Forest neighborhood of Brussels, the Belgian capital where several of the Gay Paree attackers lived.

Four coppers from the French-Belgian operation were maimed when at least one suspect opened fire through the door, apparently with an assault weapon, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.

Forest mayor Marc-Jean Ghyssels told local media two people had barricaded themselves in a home during the raid, but it was not clear what happened to them.

The prosecutor, who asked not to be identified because the operation was not finished, said it was not clear if suspects from the raid were on the run. He said many people fled the area when they heard gunfire, and it was too early to say if some were suspects or all were just people trying to escape.

The anti-terror raid in the Forest neighborhood was linked to the Nov. 13 gun and kabooms on a stadium, cafes and a concert hall in Gay Paree that left 130 people dead.

Yet police didn’t expect violent resistance on Tuesday, the prosecutor said. That indicated they were not targeting a major suspect like Salah Abdeslam, who fled Gay Paree and remains on the run. Most of the attackers died that night, including Abdeslam’s brother Brahim, who went kaboom!.

Four months on, Belgian police and magistrates are still piecing together the role Belgian nationals and others living here played in aiding the Gay Paree attackers.

The suspected ringleader of the attacks was a Brussels resident, Abdelhamid Abaaoud. Another attacker, Bilal Hadfi, was said to have lived for a time in the Forest neighborhood. Hadfi went kaboom! outside a stadium in Gay Paree the night of the attacks and Abaaoud was killed in a police raid in a Gay Paree suburb soon after.

On Tuesday, the Forest neighborhood was locked down for five hours after the initial burst of gunfire.

Police sealed off a wide perimeter around the area where the shots were heard to keep the many bystanders at a safe distance. A helicopter was hovering overhead to patrol the area as police were still looking for at least one suspect.

Several hundred spectators were trying to get a closer look at the operation in the multicultural neighborhood, which has a big Audi car factory nearby. Audi asked its personnel to stay at the plant while the police raid was going on.

Several hooded officers wearing body armor milled around the neighborhood and ambulances were on standby.

Belgian authorities have stepped up their counterterror efforts since a lone gunman killed four people at the Brussels Jewish museum in May 2014.

The small western European country has also been prime recruiting ground for ISIS, and officials freely acknowledge their concerns about what radicalized recruits might do after returning home from the battlefields of Syria or Iraq.

Tuesday’s raid was a reminder of the anxious days the Belgian capital lived through in November and December, when the subway and schools were closed for a time, and the New Year’s Eve fireworks display was cancelled because of the threat of Death Eater violence.

[AnNahar] Turkish security forces clashed with rebels in the main city of the Kurdish-dominated southeast Tuesday, days after a deadly bombing in Ankara that the government blamed on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Fighting with rocket-launchers and automatic weapons was under way on Tuesday morning in Diyarbakir city's Baglar district, several parts of which have been put under curfew, an Agence La Belle France Presse journalist reported.

Security sources said a police officer and three "terrorists" had been killed, and around 10 civilians maimed.

Civilians were forced to flee from their homes by the festivities, carrying their belongings through the streets past burned-out vehicles.

Turkey IDs Ankara bomber as PKK rebel who trained in Syria

[IsraelTimes] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

’s Interior Ministry has identified the attacker who carried out a deadly suicide kaboom in Ankara as a 24-year-old woman who allegedly joined the Kurdish rebels in 2013 and trained in Syria.

A government statement identifies the bomber blamed for killing 37 people, including herself, as Seher Cagla Demir.

The statement says Demir joined the PKK rebels, crossed into Syria and received what it called "terror training" from a PKK-linked Syrian Kurdish militia.

Toronto attacker says ‘Allah’ told him to stab soldiers
[IsraelTimes] Police investigating if Ayanle Hassan Ali’s assault on a military recruitment office was an act of terrorism

A man who stabbed two Canadian soldiers at a military recruiting office in Toronto on Monday said he was acting on orders from "Allah," police said.

Police chief Mark Saunders told a presser, however, that suspect Ayanle Hassan Ali, 27, appears to have acted alone and that so far "there is nothing to suggest the accused is working with anyone or in concert with any organization."

The alleged assailant entered a government office building Monday afternoon and without provocation stabbed a soldier in the arm at the reception desk, then sought to wound a second soldier before he was subdued.

Neither victim was seriously maimed, police said.

Saunders said the suspect was overheard saying at the scene of the assault, "Allah told me to do this, Allah told me to kill people."

Ali was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possessing a dangerous weapon. He was scheduled to make a brief court appearance in the afternoon.

Asked if Sherlocks viewed the assault as an act of terrorism, Saunders said: "We’re looking into it."

The Toronto police have asked federal prosecutors and security agencies for help in determining if there is a link to organized bad boy movements, he said.

"The investigation’s incredibly early, there has to be a lot of analysis that has to be done so we can give a full and proper picture as to what exactly motivated this act," Saunders explained.

"At this point in time, the charges that we’ve laid are criminal," he said.

Few details were released concerning the suspect, who was born in Montreal and moved to Toronto in 2011.

Following his arrest, he was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

3 of 10 Pak terrorists neutralized
[Daily Excelsior] Security agencies have killed three of the 10 suspected Pak forces of Evil who had allegedly entered Gujarat
...where rioting seems to be a traditional passtime...
recently to carry out attacks on high-value targets.

Top official sources said the three were neutralised in a western State last Friday before they could carry out any attack in the country.

The remaining seven forces of Evil have also been zeroed in their hideouts and operation is on to neutralise them, the sources said.

As the operation is still ongoing, security agencies were not ready to give the details, the sources said.

The group, all suspected to be Pak forces of Evil belonging to LeT and JeM, had planned to attack the Somnath temple in Gujarat during Shivratri on March 7 besides other targets, they said.

Immediately after the intelligence input about the infiltration of the forces of Evil was received, the Centre had dispatched four NSG teams to Gujarat and they were put in different locations in the State.

An alert was sounded in Gujarat and all metros by Central security agencies following reports about infiltration of the terrorists.

An advisory was issued to enhance security at all strategic locations, sensitive industrial sites and religious places after intelligence inputs suggested that the forces of Evil had entered Gujarat taking the sea route.

A similar alert was also sent to Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chandigarh.

ISIS suicide attacks on Peshmerga around Kirkuk
Pre-dawn ISIS suicide assault wounds four Iraqi soldiers

(ISIS) suicide kabooms on the Makhmour front in northern Iraq, a Peshmerga official told Rudaw.

ISIS bombers launched three suicide attacks at about 3 a.m., said the source.

"It appears that ISIS has taken advantage of the foggy weather to launch their attacks," he said.

The official also explained that "two of the jacket wallahs were killed before they detonated their payloads and the third managed to detonate his explosives, wounding four soldiers."

In earlier comments to Rudaw about the Iraqi Army base in Makhmour, Peshmerga Commander Najat Ali had warned that the location was unsafe and open to rocket attacks. Early this month, four Iraqi soldiers were killed and at least 23 maimed in an ISIS rocket attack on their base near Makhmour.

(ISIS) Lions of Islam on the frontlines in the southern Iraqi city of Kirkuk early Tuesday, a Kurdish commander told Rudaw.

"At around 5:30 six jacket wallahs attacked the Peshmerga, but their assault was foiled," said Brig. Swara Tofiq of the Peshmerga forces on the front, who said the assault was near the village of Graw.

Mam Khafa, a prominent Peshmerga commander, is among the maimed, his son told Rudaw. Another soldier is at death's door, according the Peshmerga.

Tofiq added that the Lions of Islam had taken advantage of bad weather to infiltrate the Peshmerga bunkers.

Kamal Kirkuki, commander of the western front where Kirkuk is located, confirmed that "there are casualties among the Peshmerga, but no figure is out yet." He added that "there are still sporadic fire exchanges in the village of Graw."

The frontlines south and west of Kirkuk have experienced major confrontations between ISIS and Kurdish forces in the last two years. But the Peshmerga are well prepared for such surprise attacks, said Kirkuki.

Another major suicide attack by ISIS Lions of Islam on Peshmerga defense lines south of Kirkuk was foiled Saturday morning, the frontline commander said.

On Monday, Kurdish security forces announced they had captured the culprit behind Saturday's suicide kaboom.

...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s official Anadolu news agency reported.

"Nine F-16 and two F-4 jets carried out the raids on PKK positions in Qandil and Gara on March 14," the agency reported on Tuesday, quoting a military source as saying on Tuesday.

Gun positions, caves and shelters have reportedly been destroyed, it quoted the source as saying.

The Arclight airstrikes follow a boom-mobileing in Turkey's capital Ankara on Sunday that killed at least 37 people, and which the government blamed on the PKK.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said there are "almost definite findings" that of PKK involvement.

Turkish security forces claimed that one of the suspected attackers who detonated the boom-mobile was a female member of the PKK.

On Monday Turkish warplanes also bombed 18 PKK-related targets in the Kurdistan Region, mere hours after the Ankara attack, while police carried out raids in Turkey’s southeastern city of Adana, arresting 38 suspected PKK members.

ISIS executes 50 for desertion in Anbar
ERBIL – Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) has publicly executed dozens of its own militant fighters who fled the fighting fronts with Iraqi forces.

The militants were arrested after evacuating their fighting positions in ar-Rutba and Hit districts, west of Ramadi. The ISIS fighters were detained and executed at the hands of fellow jihadis in Mosul city of Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province, local sources reported on Tuesday.
Iraqi Army and government needs to promise protection for all IS deserters. Ship them to Mauritania...
“Daesh military leadership in Mosul considered them as traitors and beheaded them in front of hundreds of people, including jihadi commanders and Sharia officials,” an eyewitness told ARA News, using an acronym for ISIS.

“They were mostly Iraqi jihadis who fought in ISIS ranks in Anbar province,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

As the Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi army troops extended their military operations against ISIS in the vicinity of Mosul, a state of alert prevailed in the group’s ranks in the city–which has been under the jihadis’ control for over two years and deemed a de facto capital for the ISIS self-declared Caliphate in Iraq.

“ISIS jihadi families have escaped from the districts of ar-Rutba and Hit towards central Iraq and Mosul, while many others headed to the villages on the Syrian-Iraqi border,” rights activist Muhammad Moselli told ARA News. “This comes amid constant advance by the Peshmerga and Iraqi army, and continuous airstrikes by the western coalition.”

In the meantime, the security committee of the Khalidiya District Council in Anbar announced on Monday that dozens of civilians were displaced from the Hit and the Mohammadi districts west of Ramadi.

“We expect the Iraqi army and security forces to storm the districts of ar-Rutba and Hit soon,” it said in a statement.

“The Iraqi security forces were able to open safe routes in the vicinity of Hit, transferring more than 80 families to relatively safe areas in the districts of Khalidiya and Habbaniyah,” the Committee Chairman Ibrahim Fahdawi told local reporters. “We will provide the displaced families with food and health care.”

Fahdawi pointed out that hundreds of displaced Iraqi citizens “are trying to reach the city of Ramadi” after ISIS militants fled to al-Qaim city on Syria-Iraq border.

The province of Anbar had been under ISIS control for nearly two years ago. However, the Iraqi army and security forces, supported by the U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, were able to recapture the city of Ramadi and its western countryside from the radical group, killing hundreds of jihadi militants during the battles.

Probably well over 2000 have been executed so far. In addition over 8000 ISIS troops have been killed in Syria and over 2000 in Iraq.

Truly remarkable given that they probably field no more than about 30k in Iraq and Syria combined at any one time.

Their recruitment of fighters from the region and from outside the region orders of magnitude higher than Al Q.

The girl, traveling in a taxi, aroused suspicion when she said she did not have identification with her. A check revealed that she was the one named by army intelligence, police said.

The girl was arrested and taken in for questioning by security services.

Russian fighter jets 'continue Syria raids' as troops withdraw
Russian fighter jets have continued to carry out intense air raids in Syria in support of forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad after Moscow said it had begun withdrawing its forces from the country.

Syrian government forces on Tuesday advanced towards the historic city of Palmyra under “heavy Russian air cover”, according to Al-Manar – a television station belonging to Hezbollah, which is fighting alongside the Syrian president’s regime.

Palmyra was seized last summer by Islamic State, which destroyed many of the city’s monumental ruins. The renewed offensive in the area came as Russian warplanes began leaving Syria following a six-month campaign that was crucial in halting the momentum of opposition fighters and cementing Assad’s rule in the country’s western provinces.

Russia’s defence ministry said a first group of planes had taken off for home from the Hmeymim airbase near Latakia. In a series of tweets on Tuesday morning, it said aircraft would be relocated from the airbase to their home bases in Russia. State television showed footage of soldiers loading an Ilyushin-76 transport plane with equipment to be returned to Russia. An unspecified number of Su-34 fighter jets were among the first group to set off for the long-distance flight back.

“Personnel are loading equipment, logistics items and inventory into transport aviation aircraft,” the defence ministry wrote, adding that Shoigu had ordered the “main part” of the contingent in Syria to be redeployed.

On Tuesday afternoon, the first planes from Latakia landed at an airbase near Voronezh, where they were greeted by families and friends. Returning pilots were tossed in the air by celebrating crowds of comrades, with television crews on hand to capture the scenes and relay it to Russian homes as a sign of the mission’s success.

“We will carry out any command of our commander-in-chief at any point on the planet,” said an unnamed pilot interviewed on his return.

ISIS-set minefield kills 5 Kurd fighters
HASAKAH – At least five Kurdish YPG fighters were killed and 20 more wounded in the explosion of land-mines that had been planted by militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) before their departure from Shaddadi city in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province, military sources reported on Tuesday.

Backed by a western air cover, Kurdish-Arab alliance of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have expelled ISIS jihadi fighters from Shaddadi in mid-February.

Since then, specialized teams from the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG)–leading member in the SDF– have been searching for and dismantling land-mines and explosive devices left behind by ISIS militants.

Speaking to ARA News in Shaddadi, a YPG spokesman said: “On Tuesday evening, several land-mines exploded while our special teams were trying to dismantle them in the southern suburb of Shaddadi city.”

“The incident led to the immediate death of five of our forces and the injury of more than 20 others, some of them are in critical conditions,” the official said.

The SDF, which includes Kurdish, Arab and Christian units, had earlier liberated more than 240 towns and villages from ISIS militants on the border with Iraq.

Recapturing Shaddadi –ISIS main bastion in Hasakah province– came after the SDF units cut off a main supply route for the ISIS radical group near Syria’s northeastern border with Iraq.

Furthermore, the SDF alliance had seized control of a key gas facility and main financial resource for the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province in February. The western-backed forces regained control of the Jibisa gas facility, located about 12km east of Shaddadi city in southern Hasakah.
