Afghanistan

At least five militants were killed in the latest infighting among the Taliban militants in western Herat province of Afghanistan.

According to the local government officials, the clash between Mullah Mohammad Rasool and Mullah Akhtar Mansoor took place Ghorian district.

The officials further added that the militants killed during the infighting have been taken to Shindand district of Herat province.

The supporters of Mullah Rasool and Mullah Mansoor engaged in a week long infighting in Shindand district earlier this month.

According to the local officials, at least 200 militants were killed during the clashes and scores of others were wounded.

The officials also added that the Taliban militants belonging to the two sides also committed war crimes, including summary executions, beheadings and attacks on local residents.

Mullah Rasool is an arch rival to the self-declared Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mansoor who oppose with the leadership of Mansoor as successor of Mullah Omar.

Meanwhile, a prominent Taliban commander, Mullah Ghafoor Tufan, has declared jihad against the militants loyal to Mullah Mansoor in the northwestern Badghis province of Afghanistan.

The Taliban leader accused Mansoor of working for Pakistan’s Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) and murdering several Taliban leaders.

7 kops die in insider attack in Kandahar
At least 7 policemen serving with the Afghan Local Police (ALP) forces were shot dead by their comrades in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan.

According to the local government officials, the incident took place in the early hours of Thursday morning, involving three ALP forces who were apparently having links with the militants.

Provincial governor spokesman Samim Khpolwak confirmed the incident and said a investigation team has been sent to the area to probe the killing the policemen.

He did not disclose further information regarding the incident which took place in Arghandab district but a security official said 7 ALP men were killed in the attack.

The official further added that an ex-commander of the ALP forces were also among the assailants who managed to flee the area following the attack.

The Taliban militants group claimed responsibility behind the incident which takes place nearly a month after 4 policemen were martyred in a similar attack.

The last attack involving members of the policemen took place earlier this month on a highway between southern Uruzgan and Kandahar provinces.

Kandahar province has been witnessing relative peace during the recent months, however the anti-government armed militants have recently stepped up insurgency activities in parts of this province.

8 die in airstrikes in Nuristan and Kunar
At least 8 militants were killed and 13 others were wounded in airstrikes carried out by the Afghan Air Force (AAF) in eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the airstrikes were carried out by the Afghan Air Force (AAF) gunships in Du’ab district of Nuristan and Asmar district of Kunar.

A statement by MoD said 6 militants were killed and 11 others were wounded in Baloch area of Asmar district in Kunar, while 2 militants were killed and 2 others were wounded in Nuristan.

The statement further added that a Dshk heavy machine gun of the militants was also damaged in the airstrike.

The anti-government armed militant groups including the Taliban militants have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as local officials in Nuristan province said heavy clashes continue since two days in Du’ab district after the Taliban militants launched coordinated attacks on security posts of the Afghan forces.

The officials further added that the security forces are receiving close-air support from the Afghan Air Force (AAF) as they fight back the militants.

The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) expects to start 2016 more capabilities as compared to the previous years in suppressing the anti-government armed militants as they have received additional equipment, particularly fighter fixed-wing and rotary aircraft.

Afghanistan recived A-29 light attack aircraft fromt the United States which followed by India’s delivery of three Mi-25 gunship helicopters to the Afghan Air Force last year, a move that is expected to boost the capabilities of the Afghan forces in next fighting season.

1 Dies In Shootout Between Dostum And Noor Supporters
A shootout between Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum's supporters and supporters of acting Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor broke out in northern Faryab province on Thursday, leaving one dead and five wounded.

Local officials in the province confirmed violence erupted between the two groups.

"One person was killed and five others wounded in the protests," said Sayed Aqa Andarabi, the provincial police chief.

He said that police were dispatched to the area and the situation is now under control.

The alleged removal of a photograph of Dostum from a billboard in the city sparked an outcry earlier this week by his supporters - leading to protests in the streets.

Meanwhile, members of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, a political party led by Dostum, said at a press conference in northern Balkh province that those who removed their leader's photo should be brought to book.

Police in Balkh province said that a delegation of elders is working to resolve the problem through negotiations.

"If Jirga (elders' council), negotiations, and elders cannot solve the problem, then we have the law and government," Sherjan Durani, spokesman for Balkh police headquarters.

Egyptian kops wipe out kidnapping gang in Cairo
CAIRO: Egyptian security forces Thursday in Cairo shot dead members of a criminal gang that specialized in abducting foreigners by posing as policemen, the Interior Ministry said.

The only foreigner reported missing in Egypt in recent months was Italian Ph.D. student Giulio Regeni, whose body was found in a ditch on the edge of Cairo, but the ministry in its statement made no mention of his case.

Regeni disappeared in Cairo on Jan. 25 and his body, bearing signs of torture, was found nine days later.

“The security forces on Thursday managed to track down a gang in new Cairo that used to pose as policemen. It specialized in abducting foreigners and robbing them,” the ministry said.

“There was an exchange of fire with the police and all members of the gang were killed,” the statement said, without giving a toll. Italian media and Egyptian opposition figures suspect Regeni was abducted and killed by elements of the Egyptian security forces, an allegation Cairo has steadfastly denied.
Update from Al Ahram at 2:00 p.m. ET:
Regeni's identity documents found inside flat linked to gang targeting foreigners: Police

Egyptian police said they found identity documents of slain Italian student Giulio Regeni on Thursday inside an apartment linked to a gang robbing foreigners, hours after killing all its four members in a fire exchange.

Egypt's interior ministry posted on its Facebook page photos of Regeni’s passport as well as his American University in Cairo and Cambridge University ID cards, saying the documents were in a "red handbag bearing the Italian flag" along with other items such as his credit card and two mobile phones.

The apartment, located in Qalyoubiya Governorate, north of Cairo, is owned by a sister of one of the gang members, 52-year-old Tarek Saad. His wife confirmed while being interrogated that the red handbag belonged to her husband, the ministry's statement added.

Earlier on Thursday, Saad, his 26-year-old son and two other men aged 40 and 60 were in a microbus before opening fire at police forces deployed in New Cairo to arrest them, according to the ministry. The security personnel fired back and killed them.

Aid convoy reaches Taiz
United Nations-Earlier this week, UNHCR sent 13 trucks carrying blankets, mattresses, and other badly needed emergency relief items to Taiz governorate in the highlands of the country’s southwest. This was a breakthrough since it was the first time a UNHCR convoy made it through all the way from Aden to Taiz.

Dispatched in coordination with the Government of Yemen’s High Relief Committee, the convoy arrived on Sunday in Mashra’a Wa Hadnan, a district immediately south of the embattled Taizz city center. Distribution is starting this week for 500 displaced people, others who have returned to Taizz, plus local families who have been affected by the conflict.

Another 13 trucks are on their way to nearby Sabir Al Mawadim district and will be distributed among another 500 families. In Mashra’a Wa Hadnan the situation is now calm and some displaced families have been returning to their homes, while fighting persists on the eastern part of Sabir Al Mawadim.

“The two districts host over 7,500 displaced people. It is the first time that assistance has been delivered there using the direct route from Aden,” said UNHCR Representative in Yemen Johannes van der Klaauw. “The wider governorate of Taizz hosts 555,048 internally displaced people, the biggest concentration in the country and equal to almost a quarter of the 2.4 million total Yemen-wide,” he added.

These aids come within the support provided by Riyadh-based King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid, which distributed 4000 food baskets last week to the affected people in “Sabr el-Mawadem” Directorate of Yemeni governorate in Taiz.

This came within the distribution’s project of 100,000 food baskets to the affected in Taiz. The project is considered as one of the most important projects being carried out by the Center in the governorate.

Colombian Marxist Rebel Group takes 'Pro-Choice' to the next level
[Daily Caller] Women who are part of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia -- FARC -- are forced to have abortions according to The Washington Post but not The New York Times.

In a piece titled, "In A Rebel Camp in Colombia, Marx and Free Love Reign," The New York Times describes sexual relations between FARC rebels as something that merely requires the "permission" of a "commander."

The Washington Post subsequently points out the troubling nature of such hierarchical relationships in pointing out that women fighters get certain "special privileges like a ‘staff’ job, better food, alcohol or medical treatment, ability to have children and leave them with their families rather than with complete strangers, or the commuting of a court-martial sentence."

The Post even cites the account of a young FARC fighter who was told she was going to a doctor for a check-up regarding her pregnancy and walked out only realizing afterward that her pregnancy had been terminated without her consent.

Brussels police nab terror suspect at tram stop; bomb squad dispatched
[IsraelTimes] Security forces shoot man before dragging him away and forcing him to release bag that then is retrieved by robot

Belgian security forces on Friday reportedly shot and maimed a terror suspect carrying kaboom, during an arrest raid at a tram station in the Schaerbeek area of Brussels. A bomb squad unit was involved in the operation.

Belgium’s state broadcaster said one person carrying a bag of kaboom was maimed and enjugged
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in the raid.

Schaerbeek Mayor Bernard Clerfayt said that one man had been arrested, and that he was lightly hurt in the incident.

"I can confirm a police operation targeting a person who was intercepted by police and suffered a slight leg injury," he said, adding that there had been several small kabooms linked to bomb disposal work.

The Daily Mail published images of the arrest at a tram station, saying that a child had to be coaxed away from the side of the maimed suspect before officers could swoop in.
Much more, as usual, at the Daily Mail link.
Amateur footage showed armed police shoot and wound the man. Officers, who had apparently been taking cover behind parked vehicles, subsequently dragged the suspect away from the station, prompting him to release the bag he still had in his grip.

A bomb disposal robot was then reportedly deployed to retrieve the bag, which was inspected by a bomb disposal expert.

Brussels, which has emerged as a hotspot for radical Islam in Europe, was hit Tuesday by suicide kabooms which left 31 dead at the airport and on the city metro.

Yesterday's French jihadi identified
Meanwhile,

French officials said they had foiled a terror attack by a suspect who had been convicted in Belgium alongside Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected ringleader of the November 13 terror attacks in Gay Paree.

French national Reda Kriket, 34, was arrested Thursday. During a raid on his home in the Gay Paree suburb of Argenteuil, police seized assault rifles including Kalashnikovs and TATP -- the homemade explosive of choice of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

French police sources said a major raid launched in Brussels on Friday was linked to the arrest, as French and Belgian authorities labor to unravel the links between jihadists in their respective countries.

La Belle France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the arrest of Kriket "foiled a planned attack in La Belle France, which was at an advanced stage."

Some of the TATP found in Kriket’s apartment was ready to use, while police also found its ingredients, acetone and oxygenated water.

Kriket was found guilty in absentia in Brussels last July of being part of a network recruiting jihadists to Syria and sentenced to 10 years’ jail, according to police sources.

Investigations showed he played a key role in financing the network with money from robberies and stolen goods.

Among those who went to Syria through the network were Abaaoud and another Gay Paree attacker, Chakib Akrouh.

Abaaoud was among 28 people convicted in the Belgian trial and was sentenced to 20 years in absentia.

The ‘ringleader’
A 28-year-old Belgian of Moroccan origin, Abaaoud was a notorious jihadist who had appeared in grisly Islamic State group videos and was behind several failed attack plots in Europe.

On November 13, he formed part of a 10-man team of gunnies and jacket wallahs that left 130 people dead in a series of attacks on Gay Paree, with authorities referring to him as the "ringleader."

Abaaoud was killed five days later in a police raid outside Gay Paree, during which Akrouh went kaboom!, also killing Abaaoud’s female cousin.

Abaaoud and Akrouh were part of the team of jihadists who sprayed Gay Paree restaurants and bars with gunfire on the night of the attacks, killing 39.

Abaaoud was from the Brussels immigrant district of Molenbeek, which has been thrust into the spotlight for its ties to the Gay Paree attackers and Islamic radicalism.

It is also where Abdeslam was arrested last week after a four-month manhunt. It remains unclear where Kriket fits in.

Cazeneuve said Kriket had been under surveillance "for several weeks" and that the arrest was also the result of "close and constant cooperation between European services."

"He belongs to a terrorist network that sought to strike our country," the interior minister said.

Cazeneuve said earlier in March that La Belle France had thwarted at least six potential attacks since jihadists struck in January 2015, killing 17 people at the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
satirical magazine and a Jewish supermarket.

Since the beginning of 2016, 75 people have been arrested in La Belle France "with links to terrorist activities", 37 have been charged and 28 locked away

, he said.

Americans Sascha and Alexander Pinczowski confirmed killed in Brussels attacks
[CBS] A U.S. official told reporters in Brussels Friday that at least two Americans were among those killed in the terror attacks in that city Tuesday. It wasn't immediately clear who the official was referring to.

The word came with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visiting Brussels to express his condolences to the Belgian people.

In addition, family members said a brother and sister, both Dutch citizens who had been living in New York City and were among those missing following the Brussels attacks, were killed, their family says.

Sascha and Alexander Pinczowski have relatives in the Netherlands. They were returning to the U.S. when they lost their lives, CBS News was told.

6 Arrested in Brussels Police Operation after French Raids Foil Planned Terror Attack
[ABCNEWS.GO] Six people have been placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in a large police operation in Brussels, a Belgian prosecutor said Thursday night, as two suspects in the deadly Brussels bombings remain on the loose.

The six arrested were detained for questioning, a Belgian prosecutor said in a statement. The decision of whether to charge them is expected to be made tomorrow.

Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon tweeted earlier in the evening that five people had been arrested.

Several houses were searched in Brussels, Schaerbeek and Jette, the prosecutor said. The police raids were conducted in connection with the Brussels terror attack investigation.

News of the raid came shortly after raids in northwest Gay Paree foiled a planned attack, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.

The French plot was at the "advanced stage" of preparation and was discovered after a French national -- described as being at a "high level" in the plot -- was arrested this morning, Cazeneuve said.

There did not appear to be links "at this stage" between the plot foiled in La Belle France and the Gay Paree or Brussels attacks, he added, saying the arrest is the result of weeks of investigation and the individual was involved in a "terror network" that planned to strike.

The raids in Argenteuil, about 8 miles outside of the center of Gay Paree, were ongoing and the streets were sealed off.

Investigators are actively seeking a second suspect in the Brussels metro bombing who has been seen on surveillance camera footage inside the subway station with jacket wallah Khalid El-Bakraoui, a Belgian police source told ABC News.

That second suspect, who is unidentified, was spotted on the subway platform at the Maelbeek station with El-Bakraoui, according to police.

El-Bakraoui is thought to be dead after detonating a bomb on the subway train as it was pulling out of the station. The accomplice now being sought has yet to be identified, but police do not believe he died in the Tuesday attack.

In the other attack at the city's international airport, Khalid El-Bakraoui’s brother, Ibrahim El-Bakraoui, was one of two alleged suicide bombers who led that attack.

Turkish warbirds, ground forces hit Kurd kommie kamps
ANKARA: Turkish warplanes bombed and destroyed nearly a dozen targets belonging to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq late on Wednesday, the armed forces said, the latest operations targeting insurgent camps near the Turkish border.

The F-16 and F-4 jets carried out the operation against the camps in the Hakkurk, Haftanin, Avasin and Basyan areas at 9 p.m. (1900 GMT), destroying 11 targets including ammunition depots and shelters, the military said on Thursday.

On Tuesday, warplanes struck shelters, caves and ammunition depots used by the PKK in northern Iraq and rural areas near the southeastern Turkish town of Semdinli.

Security forces also killed 10 PKK fighters on Wednesday in clashes in the southeastern towns of Nusaybin, near the Syrian border, and Sirnak, near the Iraqi border, the army said.

The military says more than a thousand insurgents have been killed in the largely Kurdish southeast since a 2-1/2-year-old PKK cease-fire collapsed in July, prompting the heaviest clashes in the region since the 1990s.

President Tayyip Erdogan has said that more than 300 members of the security forces have died, while the pro-Kurdish opposition says hundreds of civilians have also been killed.

Separately, the military said two soldiers had been killed and three wounded when a homemade bomb was detonated by remote control in Nusaybin. The town has been under a curfew since March 14, when security forces launched operations against militants there.

Iraq begins offensive to liberate Mosul
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Iraqi army said Thursday its troops and allied militia had launched what is expected to be a long and difficult offensive to retake the second city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, ISIS’s main hub in Iraq.

The army and the Popular Mobilization paramilitary force "have begun the first phase of conquest operations" in the northern Nineveh province, of which Mosul is the capital, Iraq’s joint operations command said in a statement.

It said four villages had been taken between the town of Qayyarah, which is still held by ISIS, and Makhmur, where US-backed Iraqi forces have been massing in recent weeks.

The army did not say how long this phase of the operation was expected to take and Iraqi forces still look far from being in a position to take the city itself.

The joint operations command is coordinating the battle by Iraqi security forces to retake the large parts of the country seized by ISIS during a lightning offensive in 2014.

It includes representatives from the US-led coalition that has provided air support, training and military advisers for the Iraqi army in its fightback.

Iraqi forces have scored important recent gains against ISIS, including by last month retaking Anbar thriving provincial capital Ramadi.

But Mosul -- which along with Raqa in Syria is one of the myrmidons’ two main hubs -- would be a major prize for Iraqi forces.

Experts have warned that any battle to retake the city will be difficult, given the significant number of jihadists and civilians in the city and the time ISIS has had to prepare defences.

Lieutenant General Sean MacFarland, the commander of the US-led operation against ISIS, has said that Iraqi generals do not think they will be able to recapture Mosul until the end of 2016 or early 2017 at the earliest.

As they have done in battles to retake cities like Ramadi and Tikrit, Iraqi forces are expected to work slowly and deliberately to cut off supply lines to Mosul before launching an assault on the city.

Thousands of troops were deployed in February to a base in Makhmur, some 70 kilometers (45 miles) southeast of Mosul, in preparation for the offensive.

Peshmerga fighters of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region have also been heavily involved in the campaign against ISIS in northern Iraq.

The peshmerga deputy commander for the sector, Araz Mirkhan, confirmed to AFP on Thursday that the offensive had started.

"Iraq forces in Makhmur have begun their advance towards Qayyarah to the south of Mosul," he said, referring to the town on the Tigris River to the west of Makhmur.

"The advance has allowed us to liberate four or five villages from the Daesh [Islamic State] terrorists," he added, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Iraqi forces collapsed in the face of the 2014 ISIS advance and the jihadist group ultimately overran around a third of the country.

ISIS has declared an Islamic "caliphate" in areas under its control in Iraq and in neighboring Syria, where it has also seized significant territory.

Imposing its krazed killer interpretation of Islamic law, ISIS has committed widespread atrocities in areas under its control and launched a wave of attacks against the West, including this week’s bombings in Brussels that killed 31 people.

The US-led coalition of Western and Arab nations launched air strikes against ISIS in Iraq in August of 2014 and has killed thousands of the myrmidons.

Soldier moderately hurt in Hebron stabbing; attackers killed
[IsraelTimes] Forces shoot at assailants who attacked army post in Jewish Tel Rumeida enclave of West Bank city, attack breaks several-day calm spell

An Israeli soldier was stabbed and moderately injured in the West Bank city of Hebron on Thursday morning.

Two attackers were rubbed out by security forces, according to the army.

The maimed soldier was taken to a Jerusalem hospital for treatment, where his condition improved from moderate to fair, a hospital official said.

The Magen David Adom emergency service said the soldier was stable and had not lost consciousness in the immediate aftermath of the attack. He sustained injuries to his upper body, a medic said.

"We saw a young man in his 20s, who was fully conscious and walking around. He suffered stab wounds to the shoulder and arm," MDA paramedic Zaki Yahav said.

His identity was not immediately cleared for publication.

The incident took place in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood, a tiny enclave of Jewish homes in the majority Paleostinian city.

members, who police alleged planned to launch attacks and tried to obtain chemicals to make bombs.

National police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement late Thursday that the 15, aged between 22 and 49, included four women, a police official, an airplane technician, a mosque holy man and a student.

Khalid said the 15 were detained over three days from Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur and six other states. He said they had allegedly received orders to launch attacks in the country from a Malaysian man who had joined the Islamic State in Syria.

The arrests followed Tuesday's bombings by Islamic faceless myrmidons in Brussels that killed 31 people and injured 270 others.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russian 'Rambo' wipes out ISIS thugs by calling airstrike on HIMSELF when surrounded by Jihadi forces
A brave Russian special forces soldier who was on a Rambo-style one man mission to hunt for ISIS militants died a "hero" after calling in an airstrike on HIMSELF.

The fearless officer was directing Russian airstrikes at Islamic State targets near the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria when he was surrounded by terrorists.

Not prepared to go down without a fight, he ordered military officials to drop bombs on his location and died in the blast.

A spokesperson for the Russian military said: "An officer of Russian special operations forces was killed near Palmyra while carrying out a special task to direct Russian airstrikes at Islamic State group targets."

"The officer was carrying out a combat task in Palmyra area for a week, identifying crucial IS targets and passing exact coordinates for strikes with Russian planes.

"The officer died as a hero, he drew fire onto himself after being located and surrounded by terrorists."

Moscow has been tight-lipped about having any soldiers on the ground throughout its campaign in Syria that began on September 30.

Last week IS-linked media said that five Russian special forces were killed near Palmyra, publishing pictures from their cellphones and a video showing a bloodied corpse.

However Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov at the time denied that Russian officers were participating in the advance on Palmyra, saying that "the advance is carried out by contingents of the Syrian army".

Syrian troops on Thursday entered the ancient city of Palmyra, which had been controlled by IS since last May, and clashes were ongoing in the city.

Backed by Russian warplanes and allied militia on the ground, the Syrian army advanced into Palmyra after launching a desert offensive early this month, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The defence ministry in Moscow said Russian aircraft carried out 146 strikes on "terrorist targets" in the Palmyra area between Wednesday and last Sunday.

Syrian forces claim to have entered ancient Palmyra
[FRANCE24] Syrian government forces fought their way into Palmyra on Thursday as the army backed by Russian air cover sought to recapture the historic city from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group, Syrian state TV and a monitoring group said.

The Syrian army earlier this month launched a concerted offensive to retake Palmyra, which the ultra-hardline Islamist turbans seized in May 2015, to open a road to the mostly IS group-held eastern province of Deir al-Zor.

The IS group has blown up ancient temples and tombs since capturing Palmyra, something the UN cultural agency UNESCO has called a war crime.

On Thursday, UNESCO's chief welcomed the offensive to liberate Palmyra, which he described as a "martyr city".

The state-run news channel Ikhbariya broadcast images from just outside the desert city and said government fighters had taken over a hotel district in the west.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the army had advanced into the hotel district just to the southwest of the city and reached the start of a residential area, after a rapid advance the day before brought the army and its allies right up to its outskirts.

Forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
have also made gains to the north of the city, state media and the Observatory said.

A soldier interviewed by Ikhbariya said the army and its allies would press forward beyond Palmyra.

"We say to those gunnies, we are advancing to Palmyra, and to what's beyond Palmyra, and God willing to Raqqa, the centre of the Daesh [Islamic State] gangs," he said, referring to Islamic State's de facto capital in northern Syria.

The state news agency SANA showed warplanes flying overhead, helicopters firing missiles, and soldiers and armoured vehicles approaching Palmyra.

SANA also said that the Syrian army was dismantling bombs and mines laid around Palmyra.

Civilians began fleeing after IS group fighters told them via loudspeakers to leave the centre as fighting drew closer, the Observatory said. The Observatory monitors the war using a network of sources on the ground.

ISIS executes 5 in Manbij
No ganja for you, Mahmoud
ERBIL ــ Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) has executed five people in Manbij city in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo on charges of “drug trafficking”, local sources reported on Thursday.

The five civilians were arrested by ISIS militants earlier on Wednesday. They were then referred to the Sharia Court which convicted them of drug trafficking and ordered their immediate execution.

“The five handcuffed men were shot dead in front of dozens of residents in Manbij city on Thursday,” local media activist Nasser Taljbini told ARA News.

The victims were identified as Musa al-Musa, Faisal Mohamed Saghir, Ali Aboud al-Omar, Thamer al-Aboud and Ibrahim Isa al-Fadl, according to eyewitnesses.

“The victims were described by ISIS as ‘spoilers on earth’,” the source said.

The ISIS-led Sharia Court in Manbij threatened to execute anyone who violates the group’s regulations. Over the past two years, ISIS has publicly executed hundreds of civilians, activists, and journalists on various charges in the city of Manbij in northern Aleppo.

Broken Clock: ISIS frees 51 Kurds
ERBIL – Fifty-one Yezidi prisoners were released by the Islamic State (ISIS) following an exchange of prisoners between the jihadi group and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), officials confirmed on Thursday.

Speaking to ARA News, Matthew Barber, the executive director of the Yezidi rights organization YAZDA, said the released prisoners have arrived to Duhok province in Iraqi Kurdistan.

“It is unusual that 51 are released in one rescue,” he said.

“The freed civilians arrived to Duhok, they are back to their families,” Barber said.

“The released are 51 Yezidis from around 10 families; they are mothers and their kids. No males,” he told ARA News. “The men were probably all dead.”

“It is wonderful that 51 people came back from captivity,” he said. “It is the first largest single release.”

“In April of 2015, there was a release of 200 Yezidis in Kirkuk. In fall of 2014, 97 were released. This is the third largest group of Yezidi captives to be released by ISIS.”

Last week, 19 Yezidis were rescued by the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) north of Raqqa.

According to Barber, the PKK was holding the wife of a high-ranking ISIS commander, which helped them to force ISIS release a large number of Yezidi captives.
