Torkham border closed as tensions persist among Afghan and Pakistani forces
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The main border gate between Afghanistan and Pakistain remained close for second day as tensions persist among the Afghan and Pak border guards, reportedly on the issue of fencing the border by Pak forces.

Taliban IED expert killed with 3 others after blown up by own explosives
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) expert of the Taliban group was killed in an kaboom in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan.
"Mahmoud! Are you sure you should be smokin' a stogie while you're handlin' [KABOOM!]"
The Ministry fo Defense (MoD) said the IED expert and three bully boyz were busy in making an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) when the kaboom took place.

MoD said the incident took place in Sojani village of Chardara district where the Taliban forces of Evil are actively operating.

The Talibs group has not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as at least 9 would-be jacket wallahs were killed after their boom jackets went off prematurely in this province last month.

Earlier, a group of 10 bully boyz were blown up by their own explosives as they were busy making an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in southeastern Ghazni province.

According to the security officials, the bully boyz were busy making the IED inside a mosque in Andar district when their explosives went off prematurely, leaving all 10 bully boyz dead.

The Taliban forces of Evil and bully boyz belonging to the other Lion of Islam groups are frequently using Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target the security forces.

The IEDs are the main contributors to the casualties of the Afghan cops but are also considered as a key factor in growing civilian casualties.

U.S. air strike kills five al Shabaab fighters in Somalia
A U.S. forces in Somalia called in an air strike on Thursday that killed five fighters from the al Qaeda-linked militant group al Shabaab, the Pentagon said.

The U.S. forces had been advising Ugandan soldiers with the African Union mission (AMISOM) during an operation against an illegal taxation checkpoint when the Ugandans got into a firefight with 15-20 al Shabaab fighters. Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said no American forces were wounded on the ground during the incident, which took place west of Mogadishu, the capital.

“U.S. forces were not involved with this firefight. We were nearby but not directly involved ourselves,” Davis told a Pentagon news briefing, adding that the American forces were further back from the fighting, acting in an advisory role.

The United States has about 50 military personnel inside Somalia and has repeatedly targeted the group in recent months, including a strike on a senior al Shabaab leader in April and another on a training camp in March that killed some 150 fighters.

jacket wallah from entering the place to attack workers.

Colonel Sani Usman, Director Army Public Relations, in a statement said in the process of stopping the terrorist, he detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on his body, killing himself, a policeman and critically injured another policeman who prevented him from gaining entry into the Secretariat Complex.

He stated that the injured policeman died later, adding that 18 people that sustained various degrees of injuries have since been evacuated to hospital for treatment.

"Troops have cordoned off the area and evacuated all workers from the Secretariat and reinforced security.

"In addition, the Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) and K9 teams have been mobilized to the Secretariat for screening until it is declared safe.

"This unfortunate incident has reinforced the need for more security consciousness and awareness on the part of all of us as the remnants of the Boko Haram gunnies and their sympathizers still mingle with the society.

"It, therefore, behoves on all and sundry to ensure that they are detected and prevented from carrying out their dastardly acts," the statement concluded.
Ynet adds that Boko Haram has a new tactic:
A jacket wallah pretending to be a madman went kaboom! Thursday and killed at least five people outside government offices in Nigeria's northeastern city of Maiduguri, witnesses said.

Another six people were maimed, the witnesses said, speaking on condition of anonymity

for their safety. Many more could have died but guards prevented the seemingly demented man from entering the complex, they said.

6 IS operatives sent to custody
[Daily Excelsior] Six suspected terror operatives, alleged to have links with ISIS, were today sent to judicial custody by a special court after NIA submitted that they were not required for custodial interrogation in the case.

According to sources, during an in-camera proceeding, District Judge Amarnath sent accused Mohd Azeemusan, Mohd Osama, Akhlaq ur-Rehman, Meeraj and Mohsin Ibrahim Sayyed to judicial custody till June 10 after they were produced before the court on expiry of three-day NIA custody.

The sixth accused, Mohd Mustaq Seikh, was sent to judicial custody till May 19 when his 90-day custody period, since his arrest, will expire.

The six accused were incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
by the Special Cell of Delhi Police in the case for allegedly having links with ISIS. The Home Ministry had later transferred the case to NIA.

The NIA had taken custody of the accused, who were in judicial custody earlier, on the ground that the probe in the matter was at a crucial stage and they were needed to be confronted with other accused arrested in connection with another terror case.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had told the court that their custody was required in order to unearth larger conspiracy of ISIS.

It had earlier told the court that during the custodial probe conducted by the Delhi Police, certain names, codes and mobile numbers of some active members and motivator of ISIS, were disclosed by them.

These members were involved in furtherance of activities of their ideologies using Internet-based communications like Facebook, Skype and other platforms to lure youths in joining the proscribed terrorist organization, it had claimed.

The Special Cell had registered the FIR in January under the sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC. Later the case was transferred to the NIA and a fresh FIR was registered.

Iraq
US coalition refuses to back Shia militias near Kirkuk
Iranian militias to wipe their tears with USD $150 billion
QAMISHLO – There are increasing tensions between Baghdad and Washington over the role of Shia militias, US analysts suggest. In the last operation for the Shia Turkmen village of al-Bashir in the beginning of May, the US only supported Peshmerga forces.

“The Peshmerga with the assistance of coalition airstrikes seized Bashir from ISIL [ISIS] in an operation that lasted less than 24 hours. Bashir was an important support zone for this enemy,” said Colonel Steve Warren, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman.

The statement of US coalition official angered local Turkmen Shia Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) that have failed over nearly two years to take the village of Bashir without Peshmerga support, and claimed that the PMU played the main role in the operation.

The local Turkmen PMU units failed to advance in Bashir, lacking US coalition support.

However, Col. Christopher Garver, CJTF-OIR Public Affairs Officer, in an exclusive statement to ARA News, said the Kurds played the main role in liberating al-Bashir from ISIS, although the PMU assisted.

“The Peshmerga, with the assistance of coalition airstrikes, liberated Bashir. Popular Mobilization forces were in the region in a supporting role, but the Peshmerga conducted the operation,” the top coalition’s official told ARA News.

US analysts suggest there are tensions between the U.S. and Baghdad over the role of the PMU units, also known as Hashd Sha’abi in Arabic.

Speaking to ARA News, Nicholas Heras, a Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security, said there are growing concerns in Washington over the PMU.

“There is very real and growing tension between the U.S. and Baghdad on the proper role of the Hashd Sha’abi,” Heras said.

“The U.S. is being bluntly told by Iraqi Sunnis who are willing to work with the anti-ISIS Coalition that the involvement of the Hashd Sha’abi in seizing ISIS areas is a non-starter. The United States’ Iraqi Sunni partners will not back any effort that involves the Hashd Sha’abi, even in a token role,” he added.

#1  Background:

As the Shiite government in Baghdad struggled to fight the Sunni extremist group ISIS, many Shiite Iraqis looked to Iran, a Shiite theocracy, as their main ally. More Iraqi Shiites came to trust the powerful Iranian-backed militias that had taken charge since the Iraqi army deserted en masse in the summer of 2014. Dozens of paramilitary groups were united under a secretive branch of the Iraqi government called the Popular Mobilization Committee, or Hashd Shaabi.

Under Iranian guidance, Iraq’s Shiite militias are evolving into a permanent force resembling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. That sectarian force would operate in tandem with Iraq’s regular military. Some Popular Mobilization Forces are reportedly better equipped than the Iraqi army [IA], which likely has a detrimental effect on recruitment and retention in the IA.

6 Palestinian teens arrested after rioting near Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] Boys light fire near security barrier, throw rocks at security forces; no injuries as Israeli vehicles stoned in West

Six Paleostinian teenagers were tossed in the calaboose
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
near Beitunia, north of Jerusalem, on Thursday morning after lighting a fire near the security barrier.

The six, ages 14-17, also hurled rocks at Border Police who came to detain them. There were no reports of injuries.

Rock-throwing was also reported in the capital and on the West Bank road to the Etzion Bloc, where person or persons unknown pelted passing Israeli vehicles with stones, causing no injuries or damage, according to Israel Radio.

In Jerusalem, a 16-year-old Arab teenager threw stones at a car on Uzi Narkis street, which runs through the neighborhoods of Pisgat Ze’ev and Beit Hanina. The assailant was arrested for the attack, which caused damage to the vehicle, according to the Walla news website.

The incidents came as thousands of Israelis headed to national parks and beaches to mark Independence Day.

Earlier Thursday, a 20-year-old was stabbed and lightly maimed in northern Jerusalem. Police said the young man was attacked in the city’s Pisgat Ze’ev neighborhood and stabbed in his upper body. His assailant escaped and officials said it was not yet clear whether the attack was criminal or nationalistic in nature.

Israel closed off the West Bank and Gazoo Strip for 48 hours beginning midnight Tuesday-Wednesday for Israel’s memorial and independence days.

The closure began at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday and is expected to end at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, the army said, though the reopening will be subject to a "situational assessment."

The closure took effect soon after an Israeli officer was maimed by bombs at a West Bank checkpoint Tuesday evening, and after two Israeli women in their 80s were stabbed by masked assailants in a terror attack in Jerusalem earlier in the day.

Key figure in Thai insurgency dies in Malaysia
[Bangkok Post] Masae U-seng, a key figure behind the separatist insurgency in southern Thailand, has died of tuberculosis in hospital in Malaysia, a security source said yesterday. Masae, from Narathiwat province, died in Kuala Lumpur on April 30. The source said his body was buried in Malaysia.

Masae held a top position in one of the six militant groups under the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN). He also served as leader of the rebel youth group, and he opposed the idea of peace talks being held between Thailand's government and the Majlis Syura Patanai (Mara Patani) umbrella group in Kuala Lumpur.

In 2004, Masae was charged with rebellion and racketeering after security officials searched his home and Samphan Witthaya religious school where they found documents about the 'seven-step ladder' theory believed to be a master plan for the insurgency in southern Thailand. Masae is thought to be the creator of the plan.

The source said Masae's death was not disclosed earlier for fear young members under his care would be upset.

He added Abdulasis Salae, a former teacher who is secretary-general of the BRN, has replaced Masae. Abdulasis was one of nine suspects arrested in Thailand on rebellion and racketeering charges. He later jumped bail and escaped to Malaysia.

Also among the nine suspects was Mazukri Hari, head of Mari Patani who represents the group in peace talks with the government, which stalled recently when the Thai negotiating team declined to endorse the terms of reference.

Top Hezbollah commander in Syria Mustafa Badreddine killed by Israel, group says
[IsraelTimes] Mustafa Badreddine, wanted by US and Special Tribunal on Leb, said assassinated in Arclight airstrike on Damascus airport

The pro-Hezbollah al-Mayadeen news outlet reported early Friday that top Hezbollah operative Mustafa Badreddine was killed in a purported Israeli Arclight airstrike in Syria earlier in the week.

The reported attack took place near the Damascus airport on Tuesday.

Badreddine, 55, is said to have inherited the leadership of Hezbollah’s military operations from former commander and cousin Imad Mughniyeh, who is also believed to have been assassinated by Israel in 2008.

Badreddine has had a long career leading terror attacks and military operations for Hezbollah. He is being tried in absentia in The Hague for his alleged involvement in the liquidation of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.

His latest role in the organization was as its chief operational commander in Syria, where the Iran-backed group has sent thousands of fighters to prop up the regime of dictator Bashir al-Assad.

According to a July 2015 US Treasury statement announcing sanctions against him, Badreddine "is assessed to be responsible for Hizballah’s military operations in Syria since 2011, including the movement of Hizballah [Hezbollah] fighters from Leb to Syria, in support of the Syrian regime. Since September 2011, strategic coordination was handled between Assad and Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah on a weekly basis, with Badr Al Din [Badreddine] accompanying Nasrallah during the meetings in Damascus. Since 2012, Badr Al Din coordinated Hizballah military activities in Syria. Badr Al Din led Hizballah ground offensives in the Syrian town of al-Qusayr in February 2013, and in May 2013 the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) confirmed that Badr Al Din was leading Hizballah’s operations in al-Qusayr."

Hezbollah confirmed Badreddine’s killing, noting in a statement that he "took part in most of the operations of the Islamic resistance since 1982."

There was no confirmation from Israel overnight of its presumed role in the killing. Israel rarely acknowledges its role in such operations, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly confirmed in recent months that Israel was actively working to disrupt Hezbollah’s arms smuggling operations in Syria and build-up of capabilities on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.
The Jerusalem Post has more on the ex-gentleman's career, including a list of his known names of convenience and a photo from happier days.

#1  Hat tip to Wretchard T Cat:

An Assad regime mouthpiece on Monday reported the details of the alleged Israeli flight path and smart bombs used in the Saturday night airstrike that killed notorious Hezbollah terrorist Samir Kuntar.

According to Syrian newspaper As-Safir, Israeli Air Force fighter jets fired their payload from within Israeli airspace, sending the bombs some 90 kilometers (56 miles) to Damascus, where they struck Kuntar’s sixth-floor apartment.

Syrian aerial defense systems identified the Israeli planes, As-Safir said, but since the planes were operating within Israeli territory, the Syrian army did not react to them.

Israel, for its part, has not taken credit for the strike, though government officials have happily acknowledged news of Kuntar’s death.

According to the Syrian report, two Israeli F-15 airplanes flew from the Hatzerim IAF base near Beersheba to the Sea of Galilee, where they fired four SPICE-2000 missiles. After the attack, Syrian search and rescue teams recovered pieces of the missiles, which were created by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the newspaper reported.

#2  He goes on:

The Russian air defense would have had a minutes, at most, to respond to the incoming. Badreddine would never have seen it coming. They can be salvoed, several to an F16. The Israelis could simply have saturated even the S-400s.

Which just goes to show Russia's real air defense is deterrence, not those SAMs. Badreddine is a permissible target. Russia's not going to war over him. He knows that now.

#9  sending the bombs some 90 kilometers (56 miles) to Damascus, where they struck Kuntar’s sixth-floor apartment

Compared to Wikipedia: Since it has a total of 12 control surfaces in 3 groups (fore, mid-body and tail), the "Spice" has a very long glide range, of about 60 kilometers.

37 miles or 56 miles. An improved version? Or were the jets over the border? Higher altitude?

More please.

The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked. His wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the firke. He is of purer eyes than to bear you in his sight; you are ten thousand times as abominable in his eyes as the most hatefpkul, venomous serpent is in ours.

You have poffended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince, and yet it is nothing but his hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment. It is to be ascribed to nothing else that you did not got to hell the last night; that you were suffered to awake again in this world, after you closed your eyes to sleep. And there is no other reason to be given why you have not dropped into hell since you arose in the morning, but that God's hand has held you up. There is no other repkason to be given why you have not gone to hell since you have sat here in the house of God provoking his pure eye by your sinful, wicked manner of attending his solemn worship. Yea, there is nothing else that is to be given as a reason why you do not this very moment drop down into hell.

Syria’s al-Qaeda branch seizes central Alawite village
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syria's al-Qaeda branch and allied fighters from ultraconservative rebel factions on Wednesday seized a village of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
's minority Alawite sect in central Syria, following fierce festivities with government troops.

The capture of Zaara, which was reported by activists and Syrian state media, is sparking fears of an outbreak of sectarian violence as activists say many families from the village are missing.

The development came as the International Red Thingy was expected to deliver the first aid in almost four years to a cut-off Damascus suburb besieged by government forces.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy was to bring humanitarian relief to Daraya in cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Islamic Thingy and the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
, said ICRC front man Pawel Krzysiek. It would be the first aid sent to rebellious Daraya since November 2012. The UN estimates the suburb's current population is between 4,000 and 8,000 people.

The civil war in Syria, whose population is majority Sunni, was sparked by a crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011 but it has also developed a distinct sectarian undertone. The Alawites are an offshoot of Shiite Islam and Assad, an Alawite, has presented his side as defending the country's minorities against a Sunni Islam terror insurgency.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group tracking the conflict, said families disappeared from Zaara after the Lions of Islam overran the village. Along with Syria's al-Qaeda branch known as the Nusra Front, other hard-line factions that took part in the raid on Zaara included Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
and Faylaq al-Rahman.

Separately, al-Qaeda's more powerful rival, the ISIS - also an krazed killer Sunni group - is in control of about a third of Syria's territory since its blitz in the summer of 2014 when it captured large swaths of Iraq and Syria. Both al-Qaeda and ISIS are designated as terrorist organizations by the United Nations and were not part of a US-Russia-brokered cease-fire that was implemented at the end of February.

Syrian state media said "terrorists" killed a number of townspeople and kidnapped others, adding that they looted and destroyed many homes in Zaraa.

World powers working to promote a resolution to Syria's civil war are planning to resume talks next week in Vienna, with UN-led, indirect peace negotiations between Syria's government and opposition representatives expected to follow some days later.

The Vienna talks aim to build on a US-Russia agreement announced this week to try to restore a nationwide cease-fire.

Fighting erupts north of Aleppo as ceasefire expires
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian government forces battled rebels north of Aleppo on Thursday as a ceasefire expired in the city itself, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and rebels sources said.

The fighting was focused around the rebel-held Handarat area which is important because it is near the last route into opposition-held areas of Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city before the conflict and now divided between the government and rebels.

The Observatory said pro-government forces had launched an attack in the area, supported by air strikes targeting Handarat in addition to the only road into rebel-held areas of the city.

The rebel sources said government forces had initially captured some ground, but this was later recovered. Syrian army officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The 48-hour truce in the city of Aleppo announced by the Syrian military on Monday ended at 1 a.m. (2200 GMT).

Government
Continued from yesterday: New Benghazi Witness Says U.S. Could Have Saved Lives That Day
[The Blaze] A member of the U.S. Air Force, who was stationed in Italy during the 2012 Benghazi attacks, insisted Wednesday that the U.S. could have done more to help the four Americans who died that night.

"I definitely believe that our aircraft could have taken off and got there in a timely manner, maybe three hours at the most, in order to...at least stop that second mortar attack and have those guys running for the hills, and basically save lives that day," the man, who chose not to reveal his identity, said on Fox News - "Special Report."

I would like to applaud everyone's comments from yesterday, most especially Mike Kozlowski's obviously learned explanation at numbers 3 and 5 which can be found at this link.

As mentioned in Mike's #5; with regard to approval from the Italian Government for a launch from Aviano to Sigonella thence Benghazi, it is my understanding that the Italians would most likely request permission from the government of Libya for our planes to operate in their [Libyan] airspace prior to granting (Diplomatic Clearance-DC). Standing DC does exist for refueling missions however. All that is needed here are flight paths and call signs.

Aviano is a USAF base operated by US Military and civilian personnel with all the resources needed to serve as a home base for US Fighter Aircraft. Sigonella is a joint Italian, US base staff with some Italian and US military personnel but mostly manned by Italian Civilians that are unionized.

Potential Obama regime hesitancy or unwillingness to act along with possible Italian obstruction, either political, labor union, or 'all of the above' could easily result in mission failure. Of course if one is seeking a delay or outright denial, requesting host-nation approval would appear to be a likely course of action.

It might be instructive to note that the U.S. Government response has consistently pointed to the 'time and space conundrum' as the reason for lack of military response. I have yet to see Diplomatic Clearance sited as a reason.

Again, thanks Mike. Additional comments ?
A big thanks from me as well, especially to Mike K.

A commenter below notes with some disbelief that we don't have a few air units prepared at all times for a 'hot' situation. Recall that on 9/11, home-front F16s were unarmed -- one brave pilot (I forget her name) had planned to ram an airliner if it was about to slam into a building. So I don't find it all that hard to believe that we weren't prepared, even at Aviano with Libya brewing up just across the Med.

One important reason why Obama and Hillary won't come clean, and why the press won't go after the issue, is noted by another commenter: we all know what Amb. Stevens was doing in Libya. That's exactly what Champ and the MSM don't wish to discuss. And that's why four men were hung out to dry, even as three of them didn't know why.

It's a defining characteristic for Champ: he wants something but he doesn't want to do the heavy lifting to accomplish it. And he doesn't ever, ever want the risk of public failure.

#2  With respect, Mike tells us why a close air support couldn't have been launched, presuming all the protocols.
Point is, nothing else was done, either. Not even any flyovers with aircraft not loaded for CAS, which, as it happened, were requested. The time to load out a strike is only an issue if you presume the thing will be over by the time you get there. How did anybody know? And you don't even start?
Panetta said you don't go in without intel, hoping nobody would remember that State and DoD were on the horn with the guys in real time. Nobody's had that much intel in war, ever.
Vehicles on the runway? That's why they make bulldozers. Presuming the Italians even had a clue.
Thing is...forget the time issues. NOBODY EVEN STARTED. Nobody got the word to try to get ready. Whether some folks started to prepare aid of whatever kind they could and were told to actually "STOP" what they were doing is one question. That's "Stand down". But where were the Start orders which, ultimately but--here is the point, unpredictably--were too late? It would be different if a couple of appropriately-loaded F16s came over the city an hour late. You do your best and perhaps you'll be in time. Sometimes you're not.
Here, NOBODY WAS TOLD TO START.
That, and I say this with respect to Mike's points, is the point.

#4  I concur Richard. I might further add that the U.S. gov't inaction continued even after the successful exfiltration of the remaining U.S. survivors from Benghazi.

Ambassador Stephen's journal was found by a CNN reporter 3 days after the attack.

Siting 'security concerns', U.S. investigators did not arrive at the Benghazi facility for several days following the attack.

I am not an expert of military procedures or readiness. I do find it hard to believe that the US Military does not have aircraft on standby for a "hot" situation in that part of the world. I'm not saying you are wrong, just saying it's hard to believe.

But all this is just secondary to the real issue as to the why Ambassador Stevens was in Benghazi. He was running Libyan guns to AQ. The press knows it, they just won't report it. Who gave him the orders and who was working with him locally and in DC?

#6  Amb. Stevens met with Turkish Consul on the date of the attack. No one to my knowledge has ever tried to interview the Consul. He was a remarkably experienced diplomat to be located in the Libyan backwater. In fact, he was the cutout between the Americans and the Turkish vessels that delivered the military goods to Turkish ports.

#7  RA interests me with his "they didn't bother to start" kinda think that part might angle might have.

I am a born civilian, and not at all familiar with ready getting a strike force together under intense pressure. I am a race fan though, pretty familiar with F1 crew tactics. We're the ground crews getting ready for a pit? Or did the call never come? Did they get a heads up?
