Afghanistan
Soldier Killed By Taliban Two Days Before Wedding
Wali, an Afghan National Army soldier, who was shot dead by the Taliban in Ghazni province, was not only the sole breadwinner in his family but he was also killed just two days before his wedding in Kabul.

Wali's mother said that her life now has no meaning as the Taliban has destroyed all her joy.

"It was Wednesday when I called him and his phone was switched off. I was told that he had been detained by the Taliban and later I got the news that they killed my son," said Bibi Aesha, Wali's mother.

On Tuesday night, the Taliban shot dead 12 people including Wali – all for working for security institutions in Andar district of Ghazni province.

"I painted his room and his wedding was in two days and we got all the preparations but unfortunately.....," said Adam Khan, Wali's brother.

"What the Taliban has done - no one else will do, I never saw such kinds of horror and killing," said Mohammad Asif, Wali's father-in-law.

Wali was on his way from Paktiya to Kabul where he was to marry and start his new life with his bride-to-be but before he reached his destination, the Taliban killed him.

Africa Horn
Ethiopia says army killed 101 jihadists in Somali raid
[NATION.PK] Æthiopia has said that its soldiers deployed in Somalia killed 101 Shabaab fighters who on Thursday attacked an army base used by the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
force fighting the Al-Qaeda linked group.

The Shabaab movement earlier announced a major assault on the base in Halgan in the central Hiran region of the arid Horn of Africa nation, via its Telegram messaging platform.

Æthiopian government front man Getachew Reda dismissed a claim by the Shabaab that they had killed dozens of soldiers, while losing just 16 of their own fighters.

"There was an attempt by al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
to attack our forces in central Somalia but... our forces killed 101 bandidos bully boyz and destroyed heavy weaponry," Getachew said.

"We are still assessing how many people got hurt on our side but their claim that they have killed 43 Æthiopian soldiers is an absolute lie. This is a figment of their imagination," he added.

"The Mujahideen fighters stormed the base and massacred many of the Æthiopians," the Shabaab claimed on Telegram, putting the corpse count among the troops at 60.

Casualty figures from this type of attack are impossible to verify independently. The Shabaab generally exaggerates, while the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) usually gives no details of losses among its ranks.

On its Twitter account, AMISOM -- comprising troops from Burundi, Djibouti, Æthiopia, Kenya and Uganda -- confirmed "an attempted Shabaab attack" but gave no figures.

"The enemy was successfully repulsed," AMISOM said, claiming also to be "in pursuit" of the attackers.

Residents in the area close to Halgan said the attack began when a vehicle driven by a jacket wallah went kaboom! at the entrance to the base, after which jihadist gunnies fought their way in.

"There was a huge blast and then heavy exchange of gunfire started," said Osman Adan, a resident living nearby.

Shooting had died down by mid-morning Thursday and local authorities confirmed the festivities.

"There was a major attack this morning at Halgan. Violent elements tried to break into the the base of the Somalian army and of AMISOM, but they were driven back and their bodies are everywhere," bigwig Guhad Abdi Warsame said.

"They lost and now we have complete control of the zone, the situation is normal," he added.

The Shabaab launched a similar "swarming" style attack a year ago and have since overrun forward operating bases manned by Burundian troops in Lego in June, Ugandan troops in Janale in September and Kenyan troops in El Adde in January.

While the countries contributing soldiers to the peacekeeping effort refuse to confirm casualty numbers, it is believed that scores of AMISOM soldiers were killed in each attack.
In the El Adde attack alone more than 140 Kenyan soldiers are believed to have been killed, although the Kenyan government has refused to confirm any numbers.

This is the first such raid on an Æthiopian outpost in Somalia.

Somalia: 30 Ethiopian troops killed in attack by militants
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] At least 30 Æthiopian troops were killed Thursday in an attack on a base for African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
peacekeepers in central Somalia, a Somali military official said.

A jacket wallah detonated his explosives-laden vehicle early Thursday at the gates of the Æthiopian military base there before gunnies entered the base, said Mohammed Mohamud, a military officer in the town of Halgan, where the attack happened.

The corpse count is likely to rise, he said. The Islamic bad boy group al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
claimed it had killed 43 Æthiopian soldiers in the attack. But the Æthiopian Communications Minister Getachew Reda told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the assault was repelled and that more than 100 of the attackers were killed.

He did not say how many Æthiopians were killed or injured. Æthiopian troops are pursuing the Death Eaters who fled led during the firefight, he said.

The African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as AMISOM, said on Twitter that there had been attempted attack on a base run jointly by the Somali national army and African Union peacekeepers. The attackers were "successfully repulsed" and some of their weapons seized, it said. Al-Shabaab, which has ties with al-Qaeda, is fighting to impose a strict version of Islam in this Horn of Africa nation.

Despite losing a lot of ground in recent years, the gang continues to carry out lethal attacks in many parts of the country, including near the seat of government in the capital Mogadishu. African Union peacekeepers are trying to prevent al-Shabaab from threatening the authority of the weak, Western-backed federal government in Mogadishu.

Nearly 1,000 illegal migrants departing from Libya recovered at sea yesterday
[Libya Herald] Two leading rescue NGOs operating in the Mediterranean Sea, MSF and MOAS, yesterday reported rescuing 955 migrants colonists departing from Libya. MSF reported 828 whilst MOAS reported 127 rescued at sea.

The IDF announced late Thursday evening that they will institute a temporary closure of the West Bank and block Gaza Strip crossings following a deadly terror attack in Tel Aviv the previous day, a military spokesperson said.

The temporary closures are expected to be lifted on Sunday, contingent on the the security situation.
IMO, the best way to deal with Palestinian terrorism is to permanently close all crossing around Brussels.

Terrorists known to Palestinian Authorities, uncle in Israeli jail
[Ynet]. Khaled and Mohammad Mahmara were reported missing by their families two days before they killed four people and injured 16 in a terror attack in Tel Aviv.

The two Paleostinian Lions of Islam who killed four and injured 16 at the Sarona Market in Tel Aviv were reported missing from their homes about two days before the attacks Paleostinian Security Forces said.

Cousins Mohammad and Khaled Mahmara, 21, who carried out the attack, were both from the town of Yatta, located south of Hebron.

The Paleostinian Security Services said that the two Lions of Islam didn't arouse suspicions of being Lions of Islam due to the short amount of time they were missing, and because every day the Security Services receive reports of missing family members.

IDF forces raided one of the terrorists' houses in Yatta following their deadly attack in Tel Aviv. According to reports, IDF forces searched the house and interrogated the family members. They surrounded and blocked off the entrances of the town, locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
several suspects, and mapped out one of terrorists' houses to prepare it for demolition.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said that seven people were arrested in the West Bank by IDF and Israel Border Police who are suspected of being involved in nationalistic terror and violent disturbances. The suspects were sent to be interrogated by security services.
Not clear from this if they were involved with the Tel Aviv attack, or just made the mistake of being bad guys on the wrong day. Update at 9:45 a.m. ET: They were just simple rioters throwing rocks and molotov cocktails, as lighthearted boys are wont to do.
Taleb Mahmara, uncle of the two terrorists, was a fighter for the Tanzim terror organization
...Tanzim is the armed wing of Fatah, Yasser Arafat's old outfit...
and participated in a shooting attack which killed four Israelis south of Hebron in 2002. The terror cell which the uncle was a part of planned to carry out additional attacks, but was caught before they could be carried out. Taleb is currently imprisoned in Israel, and his house was demolished after he was arrested.

Paleostinian security forces said that one of the Lions of Islam who carried out the Sarona attack was known to them as a member of Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, while the other one wasn't affiliated with any organization at all.

Israel has busy day, Bibi sez 3rd suspect apprehended in Tel Aviv attack
[IsraelTimes] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that authorities have apprehended a third man involved in the terror attack at the Sarona Market in central Tel Aviv on Wednesday night in which two Paleostinians opened fire on customers at a cafe in the plaza, killing four and wounding 16.

Speaking at the site of the attack a day later, Netanyahu said: "This nation is strong. They will not defeat us. In this place yesterday four innocent Israelis were murdered. We mourn them. Life is already returning to its routine around us, and that’s a good thing."

Netanyahu noted that the security establishment took a series of steps in the 24 hours since the attack, including "cordoning off the West Bank village of Yatta, the terrorists’ hometown, catching a man who collaborated with the terrorists, revoking work permits of hundreds of members of their family, and freezing thousands of entry permits into Israel for Ramadan."

He also slammed the Paleostinian Authority for failing to condemn the attack but praised Israelis’ strength and resilience.

"I heard unequivocal condemnation from all the most important capitals in the world," said the prime minister. "I didn’t hear such condemnation from the Paleostinian Authority. Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
I heard the cries of joy in Gazoo. That shows who it is that we are facing."

Earlier Thursday, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman ordered a moratorium on returning Paleostinian attackers’ bodies to their families for burial and called to expedite the process of razing terrorists’ home to within 24 hours.

Israel revokes Ramadan permits for Palestinians after attack

[Ynet]. The IDF said Thursday that it has revoked all permits for Paleostinians to visit Israel and travel abroad during the Moslem holy month of Ramadan, after two Paleostinian turbans killed four Israelis and maimed 16 others in Tel Aviv.

COGAT said that all 83,000 permits have been frozen for Paleostinians in the West Bank and Gazoo to visit family in Israel, attend Ramadan prayers in Jerusalem or travel abroad via Israel's Ben-Gurion Airport.

In addition, the military said it has frozen Israeli work permits for 204 of the attackers' relatives, and is preventing Paleostinians from leaving and entering the West Bank village of Yatta, home to the attackers.

COGAT said entering or leaving will only be permitted for humanitarian and medical cases.

IDF to deploy two more battalions in West Bank following deadly shooting

[Ynet]. The IDF will deploy two additional battalions in the West Bank in response to Wednesday's deadly shooting in Tel Aviv.

In a statement, the IDF said Thursday the reinforcements were made "in accordance with situation assessments."

Forces would include "hundreds" of infantry and elite reconnaissance units troops.

Terrorist's father says his son's involvement in Tel Aviv shooting attack unexpected

[Ynet]. Ahmad Mussa Mahmara, the father of one of the attackers, said his son has two uncles serving life sentences in Israeli prison.

"We didn't expect this. My son is young and has been in Jordan for the past four years, and just came here for the past five months. He does not have any political affiliation," Mahmara said.

The military interrogated Mahmara Wednesday night at his home, where his son was staying. Soldiers took measurements of the home in preparation for demolishing it, the military said.

Officials pledge to seal gap in West Bank security fence

[IsraelTimes] Defense officials tell cabinet ministers that the gaps in the West Bank security fence in the Tarkumiya-Meitar area, through which the two murderous Moslems from yesterday’s deadly shooting in Tel Aviv are believed to have entered Israel, will be closed up in the near future.

The budget to seal the gaps has been approved, officials tell the security cabinet in a meeting this afternoon in Tel Aviv’s Hakirya complex. Work on the fence will begin on June 28, with forces on the seam line to be bolstered by additional troops in the meantime.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
SDF Tightens Grip around ISIS in Manbij
U.S.-backed forces fighting ISIS near the Syrian-Turkish border said on Thursday they had reached the militants’ last main route in and out of their stronghold in the area, the city of Manbij, as a French official confirmed that French special forces are offering training and advice to fighters in northern Syria.

Monitors confirmed that the Syria Democratic Forces – an alliance which includes the powerful Kurdish YPG militia and Arab allies – had advanced to within firing distance of the road, one week into a campaign to push the militants out of their foothold along the frontier.

Washington hopes the operation will choke off ISIS’s last major link to the outside world – the militants have used the border for years to receive supplies and manpower, and more recently to send back fighters for terrorist attacks in the European continent.

“We have reached the road that links Manbij and Aleppo, from the west,” Sharfan Darwish, spokesman for SDF-allied Manbij Military Council, told Reuters.

Darwish appeared to be referring to the highway between Manbij and ISIS-held al-Bab, further west. That highway also leads onto Aleppo.

A statement from the Manbij Military Council said its forces had already cut ISIS supply lines leading north, east and south from the city, and were now close enough to Manbij itself to be able to fire on ISIS extremists.

Darwish would not comment on whether the SDF was planning an assault on the city itself. He told Reuters on Wednesday forces was poised to enter, but were being cautious due to the civilian presence there.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the SDF were in firing range of the main road leading west, positioned less than a kilometer away from it. They were effectively in control of all highways into Manbij, it said.

Civilians in the city and surrounding countryside were fleeing the fighting, the Observatory added.

It said more than 130 ISIS militants had died since the Manbij offensive was launched, as well as more than 20 SDF fighters.

The U.S. military said on Wednesday the SDF had suffered about a dozen killed and more than 100 wounded.

The official with the French Defense Ministry said Thursday French forces are with SDF.

“The offensive at Manbij is clearly being backed by a certain number of states including France. It’s the usual support — it’s advisory,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. He did not provide other details.

In a round-table interview last week, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said French forces were participating. “We are helping with arms, we are helping with aerial support, we are helping with advice,” he said.

The U.S. also has around 300 Special Forces embedded with the SDF in northern Syria.

The SDF, which is also fighting against ISIS in neighboring Raqqa province, is backed by U.S.-led air strikes and assisted by U.S. special forces.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s state-run news agency said the U.S.-led coalition airstrikes and Turkish artillery fire against ISIS targets in Syria have killed 18 militants.

Anadolu Agency, quoting unnamed security officials, said that the ISIS targets were attacked after Turkish authorities on Wednesday determined that the group was preparing to strike Turkey from northern Syria.

It said Turkish and coalition strikes also destroyed two gun-mounted vehicles, various mortar and artillery positions as well as a building used as a defense shelter.

They got themselves another hostage: Canadian-Iranian professor is jailed in Iran
[IsraelTimes] Homa Hoodfar, an anthropologist at Concordia University, has been detained at Evin prison since March

A Canadian-Iranian anthropologist, Homa Hoodfar, has been jugged

and held in Iran since Monday, sources close to the case said Wednesday.

Hoodfar, 65, is a professor at Concordia University in Montreal, and also holds Irish nationality. She is being held at Evin prison, family members said in a statement.

Hoodfar, who has written several works on women and society in Islamic countries, went to Iran in February to do research on women’s public role.

Hoodfar was arrested on March 10 a few days before her planned return to Canada. Her belongings were searched and she was held pending interrogation, the sources said.

Her passport was taken, and Hoodfar was interrogated, family spokeswoman Amanda Ghahremani said.

The Canadian government has said it is actively engaged in the case.

The jailing comes months after Canada renewed ties with Tehran that were broken off under the prior Conservative government.

"The authorities have not made clear whether Professor Hoodfar is being charged with espionage, sedition, or propaganda against the state. Her lawyer and family have not been allowed to see her, nor has the cause of arrest been explained to them," the family said.

has been maimed in an air strike by the coalition forces, media reports said on Friday.

Baghdadi was travelling in a convoy with other senior ISIS members when they were hit by an air strike, the express.co.uk reported.

Citing local sources in Iraq's Nineveh province, the Iraqi news channel Al Sumariya also reported that Baghdadi and other leaders of the Islamist group were maimed on Thursday in a coalition bombing raid.

"The planes of the international coalition yesterday bombed a location where there is a base of Isis members along the border area between Iraq and Syria, 65 kilometres west of Nineveh," the report said quoting an Iraqi source.

"According to reports, the Isis leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was injured along with some members of the organization who were gathered at that meeting.

"The attack was carried out on the basis of precise intelligence information that led to strike its own that site," he added.

"Baghdadi and the other ISIS leaders arrived in Iraq from Syria with a convoy of cars," the source said, adding the area is one of the group’s strongholds.

Citing a front man for the US-led coalition, the Express reported that he had also heard the news but had "nothing to confirm this at this time".

State Sponsors of Terror Continue Nefarious Support Unabated
[PJ] WASHINGTON -- The State Department's Country Reports on Terrorism for 2015 note that Iran got cozier with Hamas last year while the U.S. admittedly "cannot certify" that Syria complied with the chemical weapons disposal deal that the Obama administration forged to avert acting on the president's red line.

Cuba was removed from the state sponsors of terrorism list a year ago as part of President Obama's rapprochement with the communist island. "While the United States has significant concerns and disagreements with a wide range of Cuba's policies and actions, these fall outside the criteria relevant to the rescission of a State Sponsor of Terrorism designation," State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said on May 29, 2015.

So the state sponsors of terrorism section of the department's annual report was whittled to three this year: Iran, Sudan and Syria.

Iran has been on the list since 1984, and "continued its terrorist-related activity in 2015, including support for Hizballah, Palestinian terrorist groups in Gaza, and various groups in Iraq and throughout the Middle East."

"In addition to its ongoing support for Hizballah in Syria, Iran continued to provide arms, financing, training, and the facilitation of primarily Iraqi, Afghan, and Pakistani Shia fighters to support the Asad regime's brutal crackdown that has resulted in the deaths of more than 250,000 people in Syria," the report states. "Iran more openly acknowledged the deaths of Iranian personnel in Syria in 2015, including several senior commanders, and increased Iranian troop levels, while continuing to claim publicly that Iranian forces had only deployed in an advisory role."

The State Department also noted Tehran's provision of weapons, funding, and training to Shiite forces in Bahrain, including a bomb-making facility discovered by Bahraini authorities last September stocked with 1.5 tons of high-grade explosives.

"Although Hamas’s ties to Tehran have been strained due to the Syrian civil war, both sides took steps in 2015 to repair relations. Iran continued to declare its vocal support for Palestinian terrorist groups and its hostility to Israel in 2015," the report added. "Supreme National Security Council Secretary Admiral Ali Shamkhani sought to frame a series of individual Palestinian attacks on Israeli security forces in the West Bank as a new 'Intifada' in a speech on November 25."

Tehran has also been rearming Hezbollah in violation of a UN Security Council resolution at the end of the 2006 conflict with Israel, pouring "hundreds of millions of dollars" into arms and training of fighters who have "carried out isolated attacks along the Lebanese border with Israel."

"Iran remained unwilling to bring to justice senior al-Qa’ida (AQ) members it continued to detain and refused to publicly identify the members in its custody. Iran previously allowed AQ facilitators to operate a core facilitation pipeline through Iran since at least 2009, enabling AQ to move funds and fighters to South Asia and Syria."

Syria has been on the list since 1979, and the regime continues its three-way relationship with Hezbollah and Iran.

The Beatings Will Continue: Iraqi Edtion
1 dead in VBIED attack in Kirkuk

(IraqiNews.com) Kirkuk – A security source in Kirkuk said on Thursday that at least one civilian was killed while three others were injured towards the southwest area of the province after a bomb blast rocked the area.

Issuing a press statement under the condition of anonymity, the source said, “An explosive device, which was planted near al-Riyad (40 km southwest of Kirkuk), went off targeting families escaping ISIS. The blast resulted in the death of one woman and injuring three others.”

“IEDs are targeted regularly on civilians who are fleeing from the ISIS-controlled areas,” the source further added.

ISIS jihadis stone woman to death on charges of adultery

[ARA News] ERBIL – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Thursday stoned an Iraqi woman to death on charges of committing adultery, local sources and eyewitnesses reported.

The ISIS-led Islamic Police [al-Hisba] detained a woman in al-Tahrir district in the city of Mosul, accusing her of committing adultery. The Sharia Court then decided to stone her to death in public.

“Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Zahraa mosque in eastern Mosul to witness the execution of the woman,” media activist Abdullah al-Malla told ARA News.

Eyewitnesses reported that ISIS jihadis obliged a number of civilians to participate in stoning the victim.

“They called on people to take part in the execution, saying we’re in the holy month of Ramadan and we should show commitment to Allah’s Sharia and that the woman deserved death for committing adultery,” an eyewitness told ARA News, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Raafat al-Zarari, head of the Nineveh media centre, said that ISIS members are now heavily deployed in the residential neighbourhoods of Mosul city.

“Since the start of Ramadan, the ISIS jihadis have been observing the movements in the streets and looking for people who broke their fast in order to punish them,” Zarari told ARA News. “When they find no offenders to their strict rules, they create some baseless accusations in order to punish the people, like the case of the woman stoned in al-Tahrir district.”

A front man for a US-backed alliance in northern Syria said it was poised to enter the city of Manbij, a week after launching an assault with the aim of cutting off the last stretch of Turkish frontier still under ISIS control.
