-Lurid Crime Tales-
A modest proposal: let's keep track of who dies
[Hot Air] The United States has gotten fairly adept at keeping track of people who are born here over the years. There are birth certificates, the issuance of Social Security numbers, announcements in newspapers and all manner of other proclamations when a new life enters the world. But when it comes to the other end of the lifespan scale we've mostly relied on the honor system when folks shuffle off this mortal coil. Once you're dead, the government sort of counts on you remaining dead, and your friends and relatives are pretty good about acknowledging this unless you happen to live in one of those unfortunate zombie apocalypse areas.

Why should we care? Because the dead get up to all manner of shenanigans these days and it has people concerned. One of the latest is the outcry over the election being rigged, and a part of that is the unpleasant habit some of the deceased have acquired when it comes to voting. We've seen it in large numbers in the Los Angeles area, in Colorado, in Virginia and beyond.

But it's not just voting. The dead are out there participating in other things as well. We see too many reports of fraud where Social Security checks are cashed by relatives of the dead, sometimes for decades. When children die in infancy, identity thieves wind up resurrecting them years later for any number of purposes. The fact is that when people die, their identity becomes available for nefarious purposes and there are all too many out there ready and willing to take advantage of it.

War-weary Libyans miss life under Sprockets
[Express Tribune] TRIPOLI: Five years after an uprising killed Libya’s Moamer Kadhafi, residents in the chaos-wracked country’s capital joke they have grown to miss the longtime dictator as the frustrations of daily life mount.

Those living in the capital say they are exhausted by power cuts, price hikes and a lack of cash flow as rival authorities and militias battle for control of the fragmented oil-rich country.

"I hate to say it but our life was better under the previous regime," says Fayza al-Naas, a 42-year-old pharmacist, referring to Kadhafi’s more than four decades of rule.

Today, "we wait for hours outside banks to beg cashiers to give us some of our own money. Everything is three times more expensive."

A UN-backed unity government has struggled to assert its authority nationwide since arriving in Tripoli in March, with a rival parliament in the country’s far east refusing to cede power to it.

On Friday it suffered a new blow when a rival seized key offices in the capital and proclaimed the reinstatement of a third administration previously based in Tripoli.

The turmoil after Kadhafi’s 2011 fall has allowed the Islamic State group to gain a foothold on Europe’s doorstep after seizing the strongman’s hometown of Sirte in June last year.

Russians Funding Anti-Fracking Groups in America
[Punch Bag] For months, rumors have been circulating that Putin’s Russia is secretly backing anti-fracking groups in the US. Thanks to WikiLeaks, we now have proof:

Hillary Clinton talked about Russian-backed environmental groups during a private speech on June 18th, 2014. This is what she said:

"We were up against Russia pushing oligarchs and others to buy media. We were even up against phony environmental groups, and I’m a big environmentalist, but these were funded by the Russians to stand against any effort, oh that pipeline, that fracking, that whatever will be a problem for you, and a lot of the money supporting that message was coming from Russia."

As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, a "shadowy Bermudan company" has donated "tens of millions of dollars to anti-fracking environmentalist groups in the United States."

A January report by the EPA specifically implicates Klein ltd ‐ a company that is believed to be "run by executives with deep ties to Russian oil interests and offshore money laundering schemes involving members of President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle."

Fracking is a violent drilling procedure that allows companies to access hard-to-reach resources of gas and oil. It is controversial because it requires vast amounts of water and can contaminate groundwater at the drilling site.

#4  You'd think it would be far cheaper to buy state elected officials rather than feds. At least in New Mexico it is and there is no new drilling or fracking. The state government is having to deal with a significant deficit created by the drop in income largely attributed to legacy wells not delivering as much revenue as projected. Never occurs to them to make it up in volume. The Greens (Reds) reign.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 10/17/2016 16:29 Comments || Top||

#5  Fracking is NOT a drilling procedure; it is a completion procedure. 'Vast' is an imprecise term - compared to an ocean it is a negligible amount of water. Technically it CAN contaminate ground water if everything is done wrong, but only a few actual cases seem to exist. (Lots of groundwater -and surface water - contamination occurs due to poor auto maintenance.)

Vanderbilt Professor: Hillary Clinton is Proof 'Satanism is on the Rise'
[PJ] FORT MILL, SC -- Dr. Carol M. Swain, professor of law at Vanderbilt University, argued that Hillary Clinton is proof that Satanism is on the rise in America, in an interview with PJ Media on Saturday evening. She also discussed her university's decision to honor Wicca as a religion while denigrating Christianity, and how the Black Lives Matter movement is using the suffering of black people to promote a Marxist agenda.

"I would argue that Satanism itself is on the rise in the country, and I think that that's well documented," Swain declared. She argued that the deceptive tactics associated with Lucifer have infiltrated the country's political discourse, and traced that back to the leftist professor Saul Alinsky.

It's just a fact that Saul Alinsky dedicated this book Rules for Radicals to Lucifer, and I find it significant that we have, you know, world leaders, our president [Barack Obama] for example, and one of the major presidential candidates [Hillary Clinton] who saw Saul Alinsky as a mentor. And many activists, leftists, they view Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals almost as a Bible. It's all about the way he frames it, taking power from the haves and redistributing that power to the have-nots. He advocates deception, manipulation, infiltration, and so when we see our political candidates telling lies, we shouldn't be surprised because the Bible tells us that Satan is the father of lies.

Swain even noted that "Lucifer has his own TV show," which airs on the Fox network. "So people are celebrating Satan in the way that many of us Christians celebrate God."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Of Lies, Jokes, and the Shia Clergy
Lying is always a hot topic where Iran in is concerned. Iranians have long resented the Victorian statesman Lord Curzon for (among other things) depicting Iranians as inherently dishonest in his 1892 book, Persia and the Persian Question.. When US Republican senator Lindsey Graham made an ambiguous comment about “the Iranians” being liars in the context of nuclear negotiations last May, some Iranian-Americans assumed he was talking about them.

Part of the debate about lying in Iran centers on the attitudes of the country’s Shia clergy. Shiism is the minority sect in Islam, and Shia Muslims have, at various times throughout Islamic history, had to lie or “dissimulate” about their faith to avoid persecution by other Muslims. Since this dissimulation, or “taqiyya” as it is known, has become entrenched in Shia theology as an exception to the faith’s general proscription against lying, the image of the lying mullah has become a figure of fun among Iranians based on a bawdy sermon by the late Ayatollah Ahmad Mojtahedi Tehrani. Tehrani seems to suggest it is “permitted” to make one’s wife false promises in exchange for sex.

Seeking further insight on the matter, IranWire approached a UK-based academic expert on Shiism. The first point he made was that Shia Islam does not endorse lying in most circumstances. “Generally,” he says, “Shia ethics follow a rationalist approach. Medieval Shia scholars were of the opinion that to discern whether something is good or evil, one can simply rely on reason. So lying and murder and so on are intrinsically wrong because human reason helps us reach this conclusion.”

This, he says, is something Shia Islam has in common with all world religions. According to one statement traditionally attributed to Islam’s prophet Muhammad, he says, a person who deceives is not a Muslim.

So, what about Ayatollah Ahmad Mojtahedi Tehrani, who said that, although you shouldn’t lie to anyone else, you can promise your wife a new chador or a trip to the Shia shrine city of Mashhad in exchange for sex? “This is purely comical,” IranWire’s source says. “The guy was a well-known preacher and someone who focused on ethics and morality. This was just good old banter, and he himself was laughing and chuckling. In private male gatherings, these clerics often engage in sexual banter.”

Tehrani, who married in 1967 at the age of 24, and died in 2008, has some of his of his jokes posted online. More than one of them hinged on the theme of deception. Here is another example:

A man went into a mill. He noticed that it was a mule, and not a man, that was turning the millstone with a rope fastened to its neck. There was also a bell hanging from the mule’s neck. When the man asked the miller about the bell, he answered, “It’s there so that I will know if he stops going around.” The man said, “Well, what if the mule just stops and just shakes his head?” The miller shouted, “Get out you bastard! Don’t teach my mule these tricks!

According to IranWire’s source, “A tradition attributed to Muhammad says that true believers are people who have humor, people who joke, people who engage in banter. It’s seen as a sign of piety.”

Still, one wonders what Ayatollah Tehrani’s wife would have said if she had heard him laughing it up with his congregation. Many a true word, as the saying goes, is said in jest.

#1  Raymond Ibrahim's essay "Taqiyya about taqiyya", with numerous examples, fits here nicely. It is not specific to Shia Islam.

There is also this, which lays out the four types of lying required in Islam. It does not address lying to one's wife to ensure calm inside the home, though that one goes back to the Prophet Mohammed himself as well.
