Ringling Bros. circus to close after 146 years
[YAHOO] After 146 years, the curtain is coming down on "The Greatest Show on Earth." The owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the show will close forever in May.

The iconic American spectacle was felled by a variety of factors, company executives say. Declining attendance combined with high operating costs, along with changing public tastes and prolonged battles with animal rights groups all contributed to its demise.

"There isn't any one thing," said Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. "This has been a very difficult decision for me and for the entire family."

The company broke the news to circus employees Saturday night after shows in Orlando and Miami.

Ringling Bros. has two touring circuses this season and will perform 30 shows between now and May. Major stops include Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and Brooklyn. The final shows will be in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 7 and in Uniondale, New York, at the Nassau County Coliseum on May 21.

#2  ...Without denying for a second that the animal rights whiners and changing tastes had a lot to do with it, I suspect that the often outrageous cost to SEE said circus had a lot to do with it. Last time we went was IIRC 2011, and between tickets, parking, food and a souvenir, for three of us it was within spitting distance of $300.00.

#4  I think the closing was more due to the ever diminishing attention span of younger people. They would rather sit in their room and "play" on social media than go outside and experience something first hand. Combine that with those asshats of PETA, and it was just a matter of time.

Documentary depicts ancient Göbeklitepe as idol center from Abrahamic age
[Hurriyet Daily News] A documentary prepared jointly by TRT, the Diyarbakir Governor’s Office and the Turkish Development Ministry has claimed that the ancient statues in the world’s oldest-known temple were constructed by the Prophet Abraham’s father, Terah, prompting anger from archaeologists who say the claim is erroneous and misleading.
Class, this with the same crappy pseudoscholarship that keeps finding the really, truly, gen-you-wine Noah's ark.
The documentary, which was produced to introduce the cultural heritage of the southeastern province Diyarbakir, claims that a T-shape statue in Göbeklitepe with a fox motif was destroyed by Abraham.

During a part of the video in which the idol is destroyed, the narrator says: "Who can tell us that it was not Aser [Terah], father of Prophet Abraham, who built the statues in Göbeklitepe? Or can we claim that the temple where the idols that Prophet Abraham broke was not Göbeklitepe?"

Göbeklitepe has been dated to 12,000 years ago, well before the time in which Abraham is said to have lived.

Archeologist and publisher Nezih Basgelen said the purpose behind the move was to target Göbeklitepe.

"Within the framework of results that were obtained through scientific methods, Göbeklitepe dates back to 11,800-8,600 BCE. Here we see that there is a gap of around seven to eight thousand years between the date that scientific research has proved and the dates of religious references. Therefore, from this perspective, there are many problems in depicting Göbeklitepe as a communal site related to Prophet Abraham," said Basgelen.

"Showing the statues as idols that were broken is dangerous targeting," he said.

Located in Örencik, 18 kilometers from the center of the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, Göbeklitepe was first discovered in 1963 during surface surveys carried out by researchers from the universities of Istanbul and reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
Since 1995, the Sanliurfa Museum and the German Archaeology Institute have been collaborating on the excavations.

Researchers have discovered 3- to 6-meter-long T-shaped steles weighing between 40 and 60 tons, the ruins of the world’s oldest temple, a large number of wild animal figures, human sculptures and a nearly 65-centimeter-long human sculpture from 12,000 years ago.

Many organizations, including the Culture and Tourism Ministry, have been conducting various projects for the promotion of Göbeklitepe, which is expected to enter the permanent list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites thanks to its historic texture, archaeological value and uniqueness.

#1  12,000 years is closer to it. Abraham was NOT 12,000 years ago. He was closer to about 4,000. Big difference.

Terah was Abraham's father but that still isn't 12,000 years ago.
Göbeklitepe is so old it is practically on the near edge of the Neolithic. OLD capital O.
About 8,000 years older than Abraham. Seriously.

Gunmen kidnap five students, two staff from Nigerian school: Police
Boko Haram or ordinary criminals? Boko Haram likes to kidnap students, but they historically went for larger numbers and schools in the Muslim north, as I recall.
[Ynet] Gunmen kidnapped five students and two staff, including a Turkish national, from an international school in Nigeria's southern state of Ogun, police said on Saturday.

The kidnappers, who kidnapped the six Nigerians and Turkish staff member late on Friday, have not made contact with police or school authorities and no arrest has been made, Ogun police front man Abimbola Oyeyemi said.

"We have deployed police operatives and are making serious efforts to release the victims unhurt and bring the culprits to book," he said.

In September, Ogun state police rescued two kidnapped Chinese nationals who were working for a quarry company.
I don't know accurate Nigeria Today is, but this is their headline:
Manhunt for 8 students, staff abducted at Turkish school in Ogun
Here is the school website, which looks like either a Gulenist or a Turkish government project.

Ivory Coast army mutineers strike deal with government over bonuses
Because that's how you deal with a rebellious army, by gawd...
Disgruntled soldiers in Ivory Coast reached an agreement with the government late on Friday in a dispute over bonus payments that had threatened to reignite a nationwide army mutiny, negotiators for the mutineers said, Reuters reported.

The deal was struck between the soldiers and a government delegation headed by Defence Minister Alain-Richard Donwahi during negotiations in the country's second-largest city, Bouake.

Mexico warns Trump on tariffs: We'll respond 'immediately'
[Clinton News Network] Mexico's economy minister sent Donald Trump a fighting message: We will retaliate right away if you hit us with a "major border tax."

"It's very clear that we have to be prepared to immediately be able to neutralize the impact of a measure of that nature," economy minister Ildefonso Guajardo said Friday on a Mexican news show.

Guajardo also predicted that Trump's threat of a 35% tariff against Mexico, if carried out, would result in a "global recession" because it would inhibit companies from producing outside the U.S.

"It would be a problem for the entire world," Guajardo warned. A Trump tariff "will have a wave of impacts that can take us into a global recession," Guajardo said, speaking in Spanish.

In recent weeks, Trump has zeroed in on companies manufacturing in Mexico and selling products in the United States, threatening them with a "major border tax" of 35%.

Russia unveils new T-90M «Proryv-3» main battle tank
[Defense Blog] Russia has unveiled the latest version of the Russian T-90 main battle tank called T-90M «Proryv-3». That was reported Russian military expert Alexei Khlopotov.

The T-90M «Proryv-3» is a modernized version of Russian main battle tank. The upgraded tank will eventually replace the aging T-90 and T-90A tanks that are still in service with the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

"We have about 400 tanks, set in the early 2000s. It’s been almost 12-15 years. They need to be updated. Therefore, we consider the issue of modernization of the tank fleet, "- said Deputy Russian Defense Minister Yuri Borisov at RAE-2015 in Nizhny Tagil.

The T-90M tank has 125mm smooth-bore cannon that can fire guided missiles as well as shells. This tank is operated by a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver and have new automatic target tracker and fire control computer. The tank powered by a new engine, developing 1 300 hp. Combat weight ‐ 50 tons and ground clearance ‐ 450 mm.

The T-90M has new composite armor as well as built-in Relikt explosive reactive armor (ERA) in place of the previous Kontakt-5. The «Proryv-3» is fitted with side skirts with built-in Relikt ERA. It provides protection against tandem warheads and reduces penetration of APFSDS rounds by over 50%. There is also a Shtora-1 countermeasures system, which significantly reduces the chance of being hit by enemy anti-tank guided weapons with semi-automatic guidance. As usually this tank is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.

China-Japan-Koreas
Trump team: China "not to be allowed access" to South China Sea
Controversy surrounds the Trump administrations’s attitude towards China, with soon-to-be secretary of state Rex Tillerson warning Beijing this week that China would “not be allowed access” to its artificial islands in the South China Sea.

Asked if he supported the “One China” policy on Taiwan that has underpinned US relations with Beijing for decades, Trump said: “Everything is under negotiation including ‘One China’,” the Journal reported.

Trump caused offence in Beijing when he took a congratulatory telephone call from Taiwan’s president in the wake of his election victory – a breach of the “One China” protocol under which Washington agreed to withdraw diplomatic recognition of the island nation as part of a deal to open up relations with the mainland.

On Taiwan, he told the Journal: “We sold them $2bn of military equipment last year. We can sell them $2bn of the latest and greatest military equipment but we’re not allowed to accept a phone call. First of all it would have been very rude not to accept the phone call.”

During the election campaign Trump said he would label China a currency manipulator on the first day of taking office. The yuan has fallen steadily against the dollar in recent years, bringing accusations from the US that Beijing has deliberately forced its currency lower to gain a market advantage for its exports.

Trump told the Journal he would stop short of officially branding China a manipulator but was critical of Beijing’s financial policies and said: “Certainly they are manipulators”.

“Instead of saying: ‘We’re devaluating our currency,’ they say, ‘oh, our currency is dropping’. It’s not dropping. They’re doing it on purpose.

“Our companies can’t compete with them now because our currency is strong and it’s killing us,” Trump said.

Trump risks 'war' with Beijing if US blocks access to South China Sea
The US risks a “large-scale war” with China if it attempts to blockade islands in the South China Sea, Chinese state media has said, adding that if recent statements become policy when Donald Trump takes over as president “the two sides had better prepare for a military clash”.

China has controversially built fortifications and artificial islands across the South China Sea. Rex Tillerson, Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, said China’s “access to those islands … is not going to be allowed”.

China claims nearly the entire area, with rival claims by five south-east Asian neighbours and Taiwan.

Tillerson did not specify how the US would block access but experts agreed it could only be done by a significant show of military force. Tillerson likened China’s island building to “Russia’s taking of Crimea”.

“Tillerson had better bone up on nuclear power strategies if he wants to force a big nuclear power to withdraw from its own territories,” said an editorial in the Global Times, a Communist-party controlled newspaper.

“China has enough determination and strength to make sure that his rabble rousing will not succeed … Unless Washington plans to wage a large-scale war in the South China Sea, any other approaches to prevent Chinese access to the islands will be foolish.”

Under Barack Obama the US remained neutral on sovereignty claims, not recognising any ownership, but often challenged China’s control of the area by sailing warships past islands in what it called freedom of navigation exercises. If that policy became more confrontational, including denying China access to islands it already controls, “it would set a course for devastating confrontation between China and the US”, declared the state-run China Daily.

China’s official response was more tame. Foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China-US relations were based on “non-confrontation, non-conflict, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation”.

Both newspapers also dismissed recent statements by Trump and his team – taking a similar stance to the Chinese government, which is waiting for Trump to be sworn in before equating his words with policy.

Tillerson’s remarks “are not worth taking seriously because they are a mish-mash of naivety, shortsightedness, worn-out prejudices and unrealistic political fantasies”, the China Daily wrote. “Should he act on them in the real world it would be disastrous.”

There are signs, though, that Trump shares Tillerson’s views and they will be carried into the White House. In December, Trump made similar comments in an interview with Fox News, accusing Beijing of “building a massive fortress in the middle of the South China Sea, which they shouldn’t be doing”.

Peter Navarro, Trump’s pick to head the newly created national trade council, has been extremely hostile to China and encouraged the president-elect to pursue a “peace through strength” policy in the region.

“Beijing has created some 3,000 acres of artificial islands in the South China Sea with very limited American response,” Navarro has previously written.

N.Korea's Plutonium Stockpile 'Grows Alarmingly'
North Korea's plutonium stockpile has grown to some 50 kg, enough to make two or three more nuclear weapons, according to South Korea's 2016 defense white paper.

The white paper issued by the Defense Ministry on Wednesday carries latest information on the North Korean military, including its nuclear, missile and conventional military capacities. It says the North has about 50 kg of weapons-grade plutonium from reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel rods.

The amount is calculated by tallying the plutonium acquired from the reactor at the Yongbyon nuclear facility, which reopened in 2013 and subtracting the plutonium spent on recent nuclear tests, a military spokesman said. It was estimated jointly by the U.S. and South Korea.

The white paper also notes that the North "has made significant progress in a highly enriched uranium program and miniaturizing nuclear warheads," but gives no specific data.

The ministry previously estimated the North's plutonium stockpile at 40 kg since 2008 but has come under fire for making no efforts to change that estimate despite two more nuclear tests since then and the reopening of the Yongbyon reactor.

The white paper also notes the North's deployment of new 300-mm multiple rocket launchers with a range of some 200 km, which are capable of striking the U.S. military base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeryongdae military headquarters in South Chungcheong Province from the demilitarized zone.

It also notes new Scud-ER missiles with a range of 1,000 km. The North fired three of them toward Japan on Sept. 5 last year. The Scud-ER could be capable of delivering nuclear warheads to any target in South Korea from the rear. The most effective defense is believed to be the U.S. Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery planned for deployment here.

The white paper says the North has an intercontinental ballistic missile in development that could threaten the U.S. mainland and is developing submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Each of them could in theory be equipped with nuclear warheads. But it takes a dimmer view of the North's long-range missile capabilities than two years ago.

The 2014 defense white paper said that the North was believed to "have the overall capability to threaten the U.S. mainland." But the new document makes no mention of this.

"Most of the North's eight test-launches of the Musudan missile ended in failure last year," the spokesman said. "We decided to hold back our assessment of the North's ICBMs that have been deployed without sufficient test-launches like the Musudan."

Economy
Millennails Worse off the Parents - Unexpectedly
Baby boomers: Your millennial children are worse off than you.

With a median household income of $40,581, millennials earn 20 percent less than boomers did at the same stage of life, despite being better educated, according to a new analysis of Federal Reserve data by the advocacy group Young Invincibles.
Maybe there is a connection in that last statement?
The analysis released Friday gives concrete details about a troubling generational divide that helps to explain much of the anxiety that defined the 2016 election. Millennials have half the net worth of boomers. Their home ownership rate is lower, while their student debt is drastically higher.
See the pattern?
At Brick and Bones in Dallas' Deep Ellum, bar manager Ian Brooks, 24, said he probably earned a bit less than his parents did at the same age, but he said his college debt tilted the equation in their favor.
Everybody should go to college! We can finance it for you! You're a special snowflake!
"It's almost, like, a scam," he said of college costs these days. "You can come out of school $130,000 in debt."
Some old-time high schools taught basic financial planning, balancing your checkbook, and other old-fashioned ideas like that.
Brooks chose not to finish pursuing a business degree in college, realizing he could learn and get paid instead of paying to learn. "I thought I would be further along," Brooks said. "But as they say, tragedy builds character."
Maybe I'll go to his bar and buy him a drink.
Education does help boost incomes. But the median college-educated millennial with student debt is earning only slightly more than a baby boomer without a degree did in 1989.
Anybody compare STEM graduates with SJW snowflakes?
The homeownership rate for this age group dipped to 43 percent from 46 percent in 1989, although the rate has improved for millennials with a college degree relative to boomers.
I wonder if that crushing college debt has anything to do with that?
The median net worth of millennials is $10,090 ‐ 56 percent less than it was for boomers.
Since they don't own homes due to - I wonder what?
Don't go all schadenfreude yet. The author wants you to be afraid - very afraid - for the millennials.
The declining fortunes of millennials could impact boomers who are retired or on the cusp of retirement. Payroll taxes from millennials helps to finance the Social Security and Medicare benefits that many boomers receive ‐ programs that Trump has said won't be subject to spending cuts.
Spending cuts, no. But watch for no cost of living increases, another increase in the age at which one can start taking benefits without penalty, taxes on other earnings and on other pension payments including IRAs... and an increased take from the paychecks of the young to support their elders. Our bar manager doesn't know that FICA is higher than it was in his parents' and grandparents' day, and who will tell him?

Europe
More on the U.S. Armored Brigade deployment to Poland (Video)
[Defense Blog] The recent arrival in Poland of the U.S. Army, 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team "marks a significant moment in European deterrence and defense," Army Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, commander of U.S. European Command, said in a Eucom news release.

That was reported by press service of the United States Army.

In the release, Scaparrotti, who wears a second hat as NATO supreme allied commander-Europe, commented on the Fort Carson, Colorado-based brigade’s movement from Germany into Poland for Operation Atlantic Resolve.

"I would like to thank our allies and commend them on this historic moment, Scaparrotti said. "The European infrastructure and integrated support has enabled our force to rapidly be ready and postured should they need to deter Russian aggression."

The American brigade "joins regional forces already committed to responsiveness and security; it is great to see our Army at the front, integrated with the combined and joint air and naval forces of the United States, our allies and partners," the general said.

The arrival of the 3rd ABCT’s 3,500 soldiers and its equipment marks the beginning of the presence of such a unit and back-to-back rotations of U.S. troops and equipment in Europe, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook told reporters at a Jan. 5 news briefing.

"This effort is part of our European Reassurance Initiative to maintain persistent, rotational presence of air, land, and sea forces in Central and Eastern Europe," Cook said.

Video depicts rail yard arrival and off-loading. A very dangerous undertaking if not closely supervised.

Steve Harvey to Work With Trump Administration on Inner City Policy
[Breitbart] Actor, comedian, and Family Feud host Steve Harvey met with President-elect Donald Trump on Friday at Trump Tower in Manhattan.

"I stepped from behind my microphone and I came and talked to the guy who is going to be the 45th president," Harvey told reporters about his meeting with Trump, whom he said he found "both congenial and sincere."

Harvey said he plans to partner with Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development nominee Dr. Ben Carson on restoring America’s inner cities.

"Trump wants to help with the situations in the inner cities so he immediately got Dr. Ben Carson on the phone to put us together to begin dialog in looking at programs and housing to help our inner cities and he’s very open to my mentoring efforts across the country," Harvey said.

"I walked away feeling like I had just talked with a man who genuinely wants to make a difference in this area," he added. "I feel that something really great could come out of this... I would sit with him anytime."

Two LHWs gang-raped in Gujrat village
[DAWN] GUJRAT: Two lady health workers (LHWs) posted at a Basic Health Unit (BHU) in Bheelwal were gang-raped by four faceless myrmidons, according to information gathered on Saturday.

The gangsters also took away Rs8,000 and other valuables but it could not be confirmed whether they had come to the BHU for robbery.

The incident took place at the public health facility within the Tanda police jurisdiction on Dec 29. It was kept under wraps until the women victims approached Gujrat District Police Officer Sohail Zafar Chatha on Friday.

It is said that there was a third lady health worker at the heath facility. The severity of the assault on her is not yet clear although it has been learnt that the gang of four men had kept her locked in a room for a considerable period of time.

Speaking to Dawn, the Gujrat DPO confirmed the gang-rape and said police had traced the four suspects who would be placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
soon. He said the two LHWs would reside in the residential rooms of the BHU and they had informed their superiors about the ghastly incident but continued to work. The Tanda police had initially registered a robbery case under Section 392 of the Pakistain Penal Code as it was complained that the gangsters had taken away Rs8,000 and valuables such as the UPS system and battery, a biometric machine and a mobile phone after locking the watchmen in a room.

#1  You may not have noticed a map recently, but Gujarat is a State in India and NOT in Pakistan.

Filing a Law in the Penal Code of Pakistan? You are off by about 800 miles at a rough guess. Rupees are a currency used in India AND Pakistan so perhaps that confused you.
At any rate I am a little confused...a spelling thing off by one letter A.

But Gujarat is NOT in Pakistan. Gujarat is roughly the California of India. Now there is a Bhilvada in Gujarat, could that be the place?

A taluka is a Police and tax district designation..Police district might be the way to translate that.

Now there IS a Gujrat in Punjab not in Gujarat. And Punjab IS in Pakistan. in which case who cares if Moslems rape Moslems. Fine, Moslems will rape your dog.
As long as it wasn't India, I am OK with that.

#2  The heading of this section is India-Pakistan, my dear Thriger Flolugum1523, and Dawn is a Pakistani newspaper. Couple that with the reference to the penal colde of Pakistan, and the smart money would bet that this took place in Pakistan, where such behaviour is only somewhat more common nowadays than in India. Today's India is in so many ways not the India Mr. Wife knew so well in 1990, and even less the India where a girlfriend of mine spent a month sleeping unmolested on the beach of Bombay -- as it was then -- while she waited for the mail to deliver money and airplane tickets from home after she was invited to leave the novitiate of Mother Theresa's order.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Abbas: We May Rescind Recognition of Israel If Trump Moves US Embassy to Jerusalem
[Breitbart] Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro published on Saturday that should Donald Trump move the US Embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Palestinian will no longer recognize the State of Israel.

"I wrote to President Elect Trump and asked him not to (move the embassy)," Abbas said in the interview. "Not only will this action destroy America’s legitimacy to fill any sort of position in a solution to this conflict, it will also destroy the Two State Solution."

Trump, who will be sworn in as President of the United States on Friday, has said previously that he intends to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel, and move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem ‐ a promise nearly every single other president elect has made. The Palestinians are against this, and view this as a detrimental, unilateral action, and that Jerusalem’s status must be negotiated in a final status agreement.

Abbas continued in his interview, stating that if Trump moves the embassy in any case, "we will have several options, and we are talking about them with other Arab countries."

"Cancelling our recognition of the State of Israel is one of the possibilities, although I hope we won’t come to this point. I hope the opposite will happen ‐ that we will succeed in working with the next US government."

The Le Figaro article was published one day before the Paris Peace Conference is set to take place, and on the same day that Abbas visits the Vatican to appeal to the Pope to put pressure on the Americans to not move their embassy to Jerusalem.

Hamas says Turkey to send fuel to end Gaza electricity crisis, arrests hundreds of protesters
[IsraelTimes] Strip’s Islamist rulers reportedly detain hundreds in bid to quell days of protests over chronic power shortages.

Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", leader Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from office on 14 June 2007 at the height of the Fatah-Hamas festivities, but Haniyeh did not acknowledge the decree and continues as the PM of Gazoo while Abbas maintains a separate PM in the West Bank...
said Saturday that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has pledged to send large amounts of fuel to the Gazoo Strip in an effort to end the crippling electricity shortage in the Paleostinian enclave, which has sparked rare public protests.

Gazoo’s Hamas rulers have detained hundreds of people in recent days in an effort to quell the protests that have rocked the Strip.

In a blurb, Haniyeh said the deal for the emergency assistance from Ankara was struck after days of "extensive efforts" to end the power crisis. The diesel fuel would help re-open Gazoo’s sole power plant, which supplies electricity to some 2.2 million Paleostinian residents of the Strip.

Haniyeh is also expected to meet with Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
i leaders in the coming days to discuss long-term solutions to the regular electricity shortages in Gazoo.

The Paleostinian territory is currently experiencing the worst electricity shortage in years, with power supplied to households only three to four hours a day in a cold winter. A handful of deaths have been blamed on the cold weather in recent days.

In rare shows of dissent, Gazoo residents in recent weeks have staged spontaneous demonstrations, including marching at night with torches to demand more electricity.

On Thursday, thousands of protesters in northern Gazoo marched to the local headquarters of the Hamas-run electricity company, in one of the largest unauthorized protests in the territory since the terrorist group seized power nearly a decade ago. Hamas has shown little tolerance for dissent, and it moved quickly to contain Thursday’s demonstration. Security forces dispersed the protesters violently, with shots had gun sex and a number of journalists beaten up.

Over the weekend Hamas detained hundred of protest organizers, but the actions seem to have had little success, with further protests planned.

On Wednesday, Hamas tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
a local comedian who made a viral video lamenting the power shortages during the cold winter season.

Life has become increasingly difficult for Gazoo’s 2 million residents, who are squeezed into the tiny coastal territory. Hamas’s violent takeover a decade ago triggered a border blockade by Israel and Egypt that, among other things, sharply aggravated power shortages.

But the more immediate cause of the crisis appears to be the split between Hamas and the Paleostinian Authority, the internationally recognized Paleostinian leadership which governs the West Bank. Hamas seized control of Gazoo from Fatah, which dominates the PA, in a near civil war in 2007. The two factions have been unable to form a unity government and have been in dispute over tax bills on fuel imports.

Another reason Gazoo energy authorities have so little funding is unpaid bills. Nearly 70 percent of households do not pay their electricity bills, either because of poverty or due to lack of collection, the UN estimates.

Turkey to provide Gaza with 15,000 tons of diesel fuel

[Ynet] The Energy Authority in the Gazoo Strip has reported that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has offered to transfer 15 thousand tons of diesel fuel to help resolve the power crisis plaguing the Gazoo Strip since the beginning of the month. A Paleostinian source said that the deputy leader of Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,, Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from office on 14 June 2007 at the height of the Fatah-Hamas festivities, but Haniyeh did not acknowledge the decree and continues as the PM of Gazoo while Abbas maintains a separate PM in the West Bank...
, helped negotiate the deal.

#1  15k tons is probably no more than a few days worth
Posted by: lord garth || 01/15/2017 8:38 Comments || Top||

#2  OK kids, here are my calculations:

Gaza has a load of 500 megawatts or 500,000 killowats
500,000 kw/13.75 gal/hr/kw - 36,300 gal/hr of oil

36.300 gal/hr x 6.7 lb/gal/2.2 lb/kg =110663 kg/hr

110,663 kg/hr x 1 tonne/1000 kg = 111 tonnes/hr

Turkey saying that they will deliver 15,000 tonnes to Gaza will supply Gaza for
15000 tonnes/(111 tones/hr*24 hr/day) = 6 days.
Posted by: Alaska Paul || 01/15/2017 16:54 Comments || Top||

#3  I wrote my units wrong in one place. it should 13.76 kw/(gallon*hr). Results are the same. 500 megawatts is a lot of megawatts! The problem in Gaza is that they will not pay for it. So if turkey wants to dump their money down a rathole, have a ball. They will need to send a tanker with 20K tonnes a week to keep up with the electrical demand, just barely.
