Geek Alert: Actor Richard Hatch dies at 71
You liked him as Captain Apollo in the original series, you'll love him as the heavy Tom Zarek in the reboot series.

RIP, Tom Zarek

Tributes are being paid to actor Richard Hatch, who has died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 71.

He was the only actor to appear in both the original series of Battlestar Galactica and its more recent reboot.

Hatch played Captain Apollo in the original sci-fi series and a different character - Tom Zarek - in the reboot from 2004 to 2009.

Star Trek actor George Takei wrote on Twitter: "Rest with the galactic stars, Richard Hatch."

Ronald D Moore, who created the rebooted version of Battlestar Galactica, described Hatch as "a good man, a gracious man, and a consummate professional".

"His passing is a heavy blow to the entire BSG family," Moore added.

Hatch's son Paul confirmed his father's death in a message posted on the actor's website: "He died peacefully with his family and friends at his side after a battle with pancreatic cancer."

Britain
British MPs Approve Bill to Start Brexit
[An Nahar] British MPs overwhelmingly backed a bill on Wednesday empowering Prime Minister Theresa May to start negotiations on leaving the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, bringing Brexit a significant step closer.

Members of the House of Commons voted by 494 votes to 122 for a law enabling May to trigger Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, which begins two years of talks on pulling out of the 28-nation bloc.

The unamended two-clause bill now moves to the House of Lords, where there may be more opposition from unelected peers -- and where May's Conservative party does not have a majority.

But its passage through the Commons, where two-thirds of MPs had campaigned against Brexit ahead of the June referendum, puts May on course to begin the withdrawal process by the end of March, as she has vowed.

"This, elementally, is a straightforward bill which serves only to give the prime minister the power to trigger Article 50 and thereby respect the result of the referendum," said Brexit minister David Jones.

Boeing wins $13.8 billion Singapore Airlines order for wide-body jets
[Reuters] Singapore Airlines (SIA) (SIAL.SI) announced a $13.8 billion order to buy 39 Boeing (BA.N) wide-body aircraft as it pursues expansion opportunities, a setback for the U.S. planemaker's rival Airbus Group (AIR.PA) in the fight for long-term orders.

Airbus Group has flagged its intention to build a bigger version of its A350, although these plans have been placed on hold amid uncertainty over demand for wide-body jets.

In a statement on Thursday, SIA said it agreed to place firm orders with Boeing for 20 777-9s and 19 787-10s to tap additional growth and for fleet modernization through the next decade.

Patronage Feather Merchants flee Pentagon; Trump left with scores of vacancies to fill
[Wash Times] The Pentagon has been stripped of almost all of its political appointees from the Obama administration, but an uncertain Senate future awaits the candidates whom President Trump will nominate to remake the armed forces in his image.

Of Mr. Obama’s 163 political appointees at election time, who included Senate-confirmed service secretaries, undersecretaries and assistant secretaries, only 16 remain at the Defense Department, according to a Pentagon statement to The Washington Times.

The exodus might be considered normal in the transfer of power: Political appointees are required to turn in their resignations in December.

But Washington’s bitter political climate is far different today from the last transfer of power in 2009. Senate Democrats are resisting Mr. Trump and his agenda via the confirmation process. There is a chance that some of the Defense Department’s 53 appointed positions requiring Senate confirmation will be vacant for a long time.

The vacancies give Mr. Trump an opportunity to select men and women who will provide the leadership, policies and catalyst for his two main priorities: rebuilding the military and defeating the Islamic State terrorist group.

Pakistan extradites convicted killer on UK request
[GEO.TV] A taxi driver who has been incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
for a minimum of 32 years for murdering two men in Bradford is the first person to have been extradited from Pakistain in more than a decade, prosecutors have said.

Mohammed Zubair, 36, was given a life sentence at Bradford Crown Court on Wednesday for the murders of Ahmedin Khyel and Imran Khan
in May 2011.

A jury heard how Zubair lured Mr Khyel, 35, and his friend Mr Khan, 27, to his family home in Heath Terrace, Bradford, after discovering Mr Khyel had been having an affair with his wife.

There they were set upon by Zubair, his friend Sabir Hussain, and possibly one other person, leaving the two men with fatal head injuries.

Zubair then drove his taxi to a quiet and secluded country lane near the village of Tong, where he "dumped" the bodies, the jury was told.

He then fled to Pakistain but, after a long legal battle, he was finally returned to the UK in May 2015 to face trial.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it was the first extradition to the UK from Pakistain since 2005.

Prosecutors said the "ferocious" and "brutal" attack on the two men happened after Zubair found that his wife, Kainaat Bibi, had been having an affair with Afghan electrician Mr Khyel, who lived in the East Ham area of London with his wife and seven children.

The court heard that Mrs Bibi visited Mr Khyel in London during a temporary separation from her husband, and he would visit her in Bradford at their family home while Zubair was out.

Both men suffered fractures to their skulls that drove bone fragments into their brains and resulted in parts of the brain being pushed out of their skulls, the court heard.

Prosecutors said Mr Khyel suffered at least six blows to the head, some after he had been knocked out, and his friend tried to defend himself "while the blows were raining down on him".

The jury was told that a "distinctive" pattern on some of the injuries was similar to that found on a dumb bell bar recovered from Zubair's home.

Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, said: "I would firstly like to thank the Pak authorities, who have played a crucial role in this investigation by arresting Zubair and ensuring his extradition back to the UK to face justice.

"His victims were brutally murdered and I hope their families will finally have some comfort knowing that their killer is now facing a life sentence.

"Zubair fled the country shortly after he had killed his victims in the belief that he would also escape justice for these horrendous crimes.

"I hope this case sends out a message that West Yorkshire Police will use all available methods to bring dangerous men like Zubair to justice, wherever in the world they might be."

In 2012, Sabir Hussain was found guilty of manslaughter and Zubair's mother, Arab Sultana, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.

She had booked and paid for the flights to Pakistain for her son, knowing that he was wanted by the police, the CPS said.

Zubair's then wife, Mrs Bibi, admitted lying to the police and making a false witness statement.

All three were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court in 2012.

Italy Police Hunt Anti-Pope Plotters
Have they looked in Avignon?
[An Nahar] Italian police were on the hunt Monday for the authors of anti-pope posters which have been slapped around Rome, amid suspicions the campaign may be linked to an arch-conservative wing of the Catholic Church.

Dozens of the illegal fliers appeared mysteriously around the Italian capital Saturday picturing a stern-looking Pope Francis, a list of accusations against him, and the words "Where's your mercy?" -- turning the pontiff's call for a more merciful church back on him.

Police were trawling through security camera footage to track down the culprits as Rome city council said it had pulled down 200 posters while those remaining had been covered up.

No group took credit for the stunt, but Vatican watchers said the fact the main complaint referred to the "decapitation" of the Knights of Malta made it likely they came from conservative quarters.

The posters appeared on the same day that Francis appointed his own special delegate to the ancient aristocratic order, after stepping in to stop the firing of its Grand Chancellor, in a move that left traditionalists spitting.

The move publicly sidelined prominent U.S. conservative Cardinal Raymond Burke, who has been outspoken in his disapproval of Francis' efforts to reform Church teaching on questions related to the family, marriage and divorce.

"Ah Francis, you've taken over congregations, removed priests, decapitated the Order of Malta and the Franciscans of the Immaculate, ignored Cardinals... but where's your mercy?" it reads.
