Man Imprisoned for Starting Huge LA Blaze over Police Killings
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] A 58-year-old man who started a massive fire in Los Angeles in anger over police killings of African-Americans was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Monday following a plea deal.

Dawud Abdulwali admitted to starting the December 2014 blaze at the unfinished seven-storey downtown Da Vinci apartment complex, causing damages in excess of $100 million, the prosecutor’s office said.

No one was injured in the spectacular fire that charred the complex that was being built along a freeway.

According to witness testimony, Abdulwali bragged about setting the fire as a response to protests that swept the town of Ferguson, in Missouri, following the shooting of a black teenager and other highly publicized cases of alleged police misconduct toward African-Americans.

Michael Brown’s 2014 shooting in Ferguson by a white police officer sparked weeks of unrest and ignited a national debate
... an expenditure of personal wind at the national level that leads to face-making and other histrionics but can't be shown to have ever solved an issue ...
about race relations and law enforcement in the United States.

Jury convicts 2 government informants, hung on all other charges
F*cking soup sandwich. The government informants were convicted on charges, but not their handlers. The jury was hung on the conspiracy charges against the Bundys.
[Librrty ation] The first Bundy trial has ended in a mistrial after finding a federal informant guilty of eight charges and one of the defendants guilty of two lesser charges. The jury was hopelessly deadlocked on sixty more charges, even after federal judge Gloria Navarro sent the jury back to deliberate further.

The case has been hotly contested by their supporters, who say that the men were defending themselves against government agents who assaulted, tazed, and threatened them.

Todd Engel was found guilty on two charges; obstruction of justice, and interstate travel to aid extortion. Greg Burleson, a fellow defendant also revealed to have been working for the federal government as an informant throughout the events at Bundy Ranch, was found guilty on eight charges. According to Maxine Bernstein of OregonLive.com and Jenny Wilson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the jury was “hopelessly deadlocked” on all other charges — including the charge of conspiracy against the United States government. Federal judge Gloria Navarro has reportedly sent the jury back on an Allen charge to deliberate further on the other counts, but to no avail.

On the charges of impeding and injuring a federal officer, the jury could reach no verdict. Greg Burleson, the informant, was the only defendant convicted of assault on a federal officer, as well as threatening. He was also convicted of two counts of “firearm in relation to a crime of violence,” according to the Review-Journal, and interference with interstate commerce by extortion.

Killings on the rise in presence of US and their false actions: Karzai
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The former Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
...Former president of Aghanistan, part of the problem not part of the solution...

Karzai made the remarks during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Yao Jing.

According to a statement released by the Office of the Former President, the two sides discussed the current situation of the country during the meeting.

The statement further added that the former President expressed regarding the attempts being made to spark ethnic tensions among the Afghan people.

Afghan defence minister, army chief resign after Taliban attack
[DAWN] The Afghan defence minister and his army chief resigned Monday, days after what is believed to be one of the deadliest-ever Taliban
...the Pashtun equiovalent of men...
attacks on a military base triggered calls for officials to step down.

"President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
has accepted the resignation of the defence minister and army chief of staff," a one-line statement from the presidential palace said.

Angry Afghans had called for the resignations of minister Abdullah Habibi and army chief Qadam Shah Shaheem, among other officials, after the assault outside the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Friday. Ten gunnies dressed in soldiers' uniforms and armed with boom jackets entered the base in army trucks and shot up unarmed troops at close range in the mosque and dining hall.

The exact toll from the assault remains unclear. Afghan officials have so far ignored calls to break down the toll it has given of more than 100 soldiers killed or maimed, but have been known to minimise casualties in such attacks in the past.

Africa North
Morocco has lowest presence of Salafism in MENA region, Geopolitical Futures says
[North Africa Post] Morocco has been shown as one of the few countries with a low presence of Salafism in a map published on the Geopoliticalfutures.com website.

Morocco together with Leb, Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
and Bahrain were painted light green in the map where the majority of Arab countries have been painted red or brown standing respectively for high and medium presence of Salafism, an ultraconservative branch within Sunni Islam that emerged in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
in the first half of the 18th Century. The branch derives its appelation from its endeavor to return to the traditions of what they deem as "devout ancestors" called Salaf in Arabic.

In a comment on the map, Geopolitical Futures notes that Saudi Arabia has exported Salafism to the rest of the Moslem world. It adds that this branch of Islam that espouses ultraconservative ideas was spread through purchasing mosques, underwriting seminaries, publishing literature, dispatching holy mans and supporting charities.

"Over time, however, it gradually lost control over the Salafist ideology itself, and three distinct branches formed: Quietist, Jihadist, and Electoral," Geopolitical Future explained.

The same website stroke a difference between the three branches of Salafism namely Quietists, Jihadists and the Electoralists. In this respect, Quietists were defined as the "most dominant stand of Salafism" that seeks to promote ultra conservative interpretations of Islam through proselytization.

Jihadists, for their part, add a violent dimension to their proselytization where armed insurrection is used to achieve the ultraconservative religious agenda.

The electoral branch, said Geopolitical Futures, emerged in the wake of the Arab Spring when Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
saw in polls a bridge to reach power.

War crimes court unseals arrest warrant for Libyan Al-Tuhamy
[Al Ahram] The International Criminal Court on Monday unsealed an arrest warrant for the former head of Libya's Internal Security Agency, saying he was suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in repressing opposition to former ruler Muammar Gaddafi. In a statement, the ICC said judges ordered Mohamed Khaled Al-Tuhamy's 2013 warrant on charges including torture and persecution unsealed, after a request by Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
1 killed, many hurt in grenade explosion at school in Russia
[Al Ahram] Police in the Russian republic of Dagestan
...a formerly inoffensive Caucasus republic currently bedevilled by low-level Islamic insurgency, occasional outbreaks of separatism, ethnic tensions and terrorism, primarily due to its proximity to Chechnya. There are several dozen ethnic groups, most of which speak either Caucasian, Turkic, or Iranian languages. Largest among these ethnic groups are the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezgin, and Laks. While Russers form less than five percent of the population, Russian remains the primary official language and the lingua franca...
say at least one person has been killed and 11 injured in a live grenade accident at a high school.
The police said in a statement on Monday that they detained a teenager who brought the grenade to school in the rural area in Russia's North Caucasus. At least three teenagers are in intensive care. The police in Dagestan called it an accident but the circumstances of the kaboom were not immediately clear.

Following two separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya, an Islamic insurgency spread to Dagestan where shootouts between the Lions of Islam and police are almost routine occurrences and the illegal ownership of weapons is high.

French Muslim leader urges big vote for Macron
Now we know which way the colonizers will vote...
[AlAhram] A senior French Moslem leader has called on the country's nearly 5 million Moslems to "vote massively" to elect Emmanuel Macron president.

Dalil Boubakeur, rector of Gay Paree' Grand Mosque, called the final May 7 vote to choose the next French head of state "decisive for the destiny of La Belle France and its religious minorities."

His statement said: "The Grand Mosque of Gay Paree and its National Federation (FGMP) call on Moslems in La Belle France to vote massively for candidate Emmanuel Macron."

Without referencing Marine Le Pen explicitly, Boubakeur says French citizens must comprehend the "threat embodied by xenophobic ideas dangerous to our cohesion."

Germany about to Deport 100 Migrants Flagged ‘Dangerous’
[North Africa Post] German authorities have established a list of 100 migrants colonists, including several Moroccans, flagged dangerous for national security and are on the verge of deporting them to their home countries.

A total of 900 migrants colonists have been flagged ’dangerous’ but 100 have been put on the deportation list, Moroccan Arabic media Al Massae reports.

The list includes migrants colonists from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Iraq, Nigeria, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

and Serbia.

Since the December attack by Tunisian migrant and Islamic State

group myrmidon Anis Amr in Berlin, German authorities have decided to address radicalism and take on migrants colonists who have been posing threat to the country’s security.

Authorities have fast-tracked deportation of migrants colonists deemed dangerous. Thirteen migrants colonists, including 7 Tunisians, have been so far deported following the lorry attack, which killed 12 people in the Berlin market.

One Moroccan, one Algerian, one Nigerian, one Serbian and one Iraqi are other dangerous migrants colonists deported for security reasons.

The list of 900 ’dangerous’ migrants colonists has been established based on their links with Islamist groups. The 900 have travelled to Iraq and Syria; two hotbed conflict zones where IS, al Qaeda and other terror groups have established strongholds.

'No one was prepared to come to the funeral'
[DAWN] After the imam at a local mosque in Zaida refused to lead Mashal Khan's funeral prayers and locals refused to attend his funeral, Sherin Yar, a resident of a nearby village, stepped forward prepared to perform the last rites "no matter what the cost."

Mashal Khan, a 23-year-old journalism student at the Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan, was lynched by a mob earlier this month over allegations of blasphemy.

Appearing on DawnNews' 'Newswise' programme on Friday, Sherin recalled that a holy man in the village had told locals that anyone who led Mashal's funeral prayers or participated in the funeral will be considered an apostate.

Sherin, a close friend of Mashal Khan's father, helped organise the funeral. On the day of the funeral, he travelled 18 kilometres to Zaida, prepared to lead the funeral prayers if no one else was willing to do so.

He recalled that the situation in the village that day was "very tense," adding that "no one was prepared to come to the funeral."

"I told my friends that I was coming and our aim was that the funeral rites are performed," he said.

"In these circumstances ... the accusation that was made [of committing blasphemy] ... people make their own assumptions and think they are right," Sherin said.

"I don’t agree with this," he added.

He said that when he arrived at the village, Mashal's father had arranged for someone else to lead the prayers.

"When this other boy who was there stepped forward to lead the prayers, I took a step back," he said.

"We went to the funeral and told the people that we are here and we will offer the prayers no matter what price we have to pay," Sherin said.

Trump impact: UN A-G and head of UNESCO say no more anti-Israel bias
If you have been to a Passover Seder dinner, dear Reader, you probably sang "Dayenu", an ancient song of the holiday. The lyrics go on for fifteen verses along the lines of: If God had only taken us out of slavery in Egypt, Dayenu -- it would have sufficed. If God had only led us through the desert, Dayenu -- it would have sufficed. If God had only given us the Bible, etc. I find myself every few days realizing that if this or that thing just reported had been all President Trump had accomplished, it would have sufficed. But this goes well beyond sufficient into the realm of inconceivable to me. The man is on track to making Jew hatred once again unacceptable by sheer force of personality.

UN chief vows to stand up against anti-Israel bias, anti-Semitism

[IsraelTimes] United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday vowed to stand up against anti-Israel bias at the world organization and said the Jewish state must be treated like any other member state.

Speaking to delegates at the World Jewish Congress’s plenary assembly in New York, while Israel marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, the UN chief said that as secretary-general, he would be “on the front lines in the fight against anti-Semitism,” which he warned was on the rise in Europe and America, and called “absolutely unacceptable.”

He promised to “make sure that the United Nations is able to conduct all possible actions for anti-Semitism to be condemned, and if possible eradicated from the face of the earth.”

Guterres said “anti-Semitism never died despite the shock of the Holocaust,” adding that it was “alive and well today,” citing online hate speech, attacks against Jews, and the destruction of Jewish monuments and cemeteries.

Guterres said he would “guarantee” that those working under him would abide by principles that he considers right.

“As secretary general of the United Nations I consider that the state of Israel needs to be treated as any other state,” he said to applause.

He stressed that Israel has an “undeniable right to exist and to live in peace and security with its neighbors,” and that “the modern form of anti-Semitism is the denial of the existence of the State of Israel.”

“I have already had the opportunity to show that I’m ready to abide by that principle even when that forces me to take some decisions that create some uncomfortable situations,” he added, in reference to a deepening row over bias within the UN, exacerbated last month when a UN rights expert issued a blistering criticism of Israel’s policies.

Former UN official and Jordanian national Rima Khalaf last month said Guterres asked her to withdraw a report in which she accused Israel of being an “apartheid state” and subsequently resigned.

The UN chief nonetheless qualified: “That does not mean that I will always be in agreement with all the decisions that are taken at any moment by any government that exists in Israel.”

His 15-minute speech was interrupted by applause at least 11 times. The former Portuguese prime minister was also given a standing ovation.

It was the first time that a UN secretary general has addressed an international gathering of Jewish leaders.

Israel last month announced a $2 million cut in its contribution to the UN budget because of constant criticism by the UN Human Rights Council of its policies towards the Palestinians.

Israel had already cut $6 million from its $11.7 million contribution after a Security Council resolution passed in December condemned Israel’s settlement building

On Monday, UN Security Council ambassadors are scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump and US lawmakers for talks likely to include the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and US cuts to UN funding.

UNESCO head calls Temple Mount ‘holiest place in Judaism’

[IsraelTimes] The head of the United Nations’ cultural body UNESCO defended Jewish links to holy sites in Jerusalem on Monday, criticizing her own agency’s governing board for passing a series of resolutions that downplay or deny any Jewish connection to its most sacred spaces.

Irina Bokova, head of the UN’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, called the Temple Mount the “holiest place in Judaism,” during a Monday address in from of the World Jewish Congress in New York.

“The Al Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram al-Sharif, the sacred shrine of the Muslims, is also the Har Habayit – or Temple Mount – the holiest place in Judaism, whose Western Wall is revered by millions across the world, a few steps away from the Saint Sepulchre and the Mount of Olives holy to the Christians,” she said.

Defending the links of all three monotheistic religions to Jerusalem, Bokova told delegates that “to deny, conceal, or erase any of the Jewish, Christian or Muslim traditions runs counter to the reasons that justified its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list.”

Last October UNESCO passed a resolution sponsored by Arab states that ignored Jewish and Christian historical ties to Jerusalem holy sites, sparking an outcry in Israel.

Bokova subsequently criticized the agency saying, “The heritage of Jerusalem is indivisible, and each of its communities has a right to the explicit recognition of their history and relationship with the city.”

Israel and the United States suspended their funding to the committee in 2011 after the Palestinians were admitted as members. Both countries lost their voting rights as a result, which has made the passage of anti-Israel resolutions more straightforward.

Also in her address, Bokova launched a new policy guide for educators focused on the teaching of the Holocaust, genocide and mass atrocities.

“We must empower future generations with the lessons from the Holocaust, equip our children and grandchildren with the tools they need to vanquish intolerance and hate, bigotry and anti-Semitism, racism and prejudice,” she said.

PM cancels meeting with German foreign minister
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided not to meet with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel Tuesday, according to a government official, following Gabriel's insistence on meeting with the far-left organizations Breaking the Silence and B'Tselem during his visit to the area.

Reports of Netanyahu's decision first surfaced in the German tabloid, 'Bild.' They were later confirmed by the government spokesperson who said Netanyahu was upset that Gabriel had refused to comply with his ultimatum not to meet with Breaking the Silence, a group that publishes testimony, often anonymous and unverified, about alleged daily crimes and misconduct former soldiers say they witnessed being committed in the West Bank.
No doubt Sigmar Gabriel thinks of himself as a representative of higher civilization dealing with Untermenschen. I think of him, and his entire class, as arrogant pigs overdue for their meeting with a butcher.

Barghouti’s Health deteriorates on 8th Day of Palestinian Prisoner Hunger Strike
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Imprisoned Paleostinian parliamentarian and Fatah leader Marwan Barghouthi, who has been leading a large-scale hunger strike in Zionist prisons, suffered from a serious deterioration of his health on Monday after forgoing food for eight days.

Paleostinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs chairman Issa Qaraqe said that Barghouti was suffering from a severe drop in blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

More than 1,500 Paleostinians imprisoned by the Zionist occupation authorities are participating in the hunger strike led by Barghouti since April 17 to protest the torture, ill treatment, and medical neglect of prisoners at the hands of Israeli authorities, as well as the Israeli widespread use of administrative detention -- internment without trial or charges -- which is only permitted under international law in extremely limited circumstances.

As President Trump settles in, PM Netanyahu gets feisty

Netanyahu said to give German FM ultimatum over meeting left-wing groups

[IsraelTimes] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly given visiting German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel an ultimatum over planned meetings with left-wing NGOs. Channel 2 reports that the prime minister told Gabriel that if he meets with Breaking the Silence and the human rights watchdog B’Tselem, he won’t be able to meet with Netanyahu.

Netanyahu has reportedly not yet received a response from the Germans.

The ultimatum comes following an incident in February, when the prime minister asked visiting Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel to stop supporting Israeli groups he considers damaging to the country. The next day Michel met with both groups.

Americans for Peace Now cancels annual Israel trip over anti-boycott law

[IsraelTimes] Americans for Peace Now is canceling its annual trip to Israel over the country’s new anti-boycott law. The law passed last month by the Israeli Knesset bars entry to foreigners who publicly call for boycotting the Jewish state or its settlements.

Americans for Peace Now is concerned that trip participants could be stopped at Ben Gurion International Airport and denied entry into Israel, Haaretz first reported this week, noting that the dovish group has been holding its Israel Study Tour for 30 years and this is the first time it is canceling.

Peace Now reportedly canceled the early June trip after failing to get assurances from the Israeli government that participants would be able to enter the country.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hama Battle Paves Way for Syria to Attack Idlib
Beirut, Damascus – The Syrian opposition warned that the battle of the countryside of northern Hama during which Syrian regime forces advanced and controlled the town of Halfaya on Sunday, could further pave the way for the regime to move towards Idlib, especially after emptying the two towns of Foua and Kafraya, previously considered as a pressure paper in the hands of the opposition.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime forces and their Syrian and non-Syrian allies were capable of fully recapturing the town of Halfaya, in addition to Tallat al-Nasiriya, the farms of Sen Sahar and al-Wibda, the Btish village and al-Tarabih checkpoint following violent clashes with opposition factions and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

Director of the Observatory Rami Abdel Rahman told Asharq Al-Awsat: “The regime aims to completely liberate the countryside of northern Hama to later advance towards Khan Sheikhoun in the countryside of southern Idlib, and then expand to other areas in Idlib. It seems that their tactic is going as planned.”

For his part, opposition member Colonel Fateh Hassoun told Asharq Al-Awsat: “At the military level, the attack on Idlib started with the attack on Khan Sheikhoun. What is happening today is a Russian and Iranian operation to entirely burn and destroy the infrastructure and human presence” in those areas.

Hassoun said he expected that the latest events in Syria would escalate the confrontations and counterattacks of the military faction in accordance with the field developments.

Meanwhile, during a meeting of the Baath party chaired by its Secretary General Bashar Assad, five of the 15-member leadership were replaced.

The Baath party’s website quoted Assad as saying during the meeting that the “most important goal of the war on Syria was undermining pan-Arab ideals and forcing Syria to abandon pan-Arabism,” asserting that Syria belonged to the Arab nation.

By his comments, Assad clearly contradicted the fact that he chose to ally with Iran and Russia during the six years of war in Syria, therefore hitting the Arab annexes of Syria.

Syrian rebels claim 311 ISIS kills in Raqqa
[ARA News] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Monday announced that 311 Islamic State’s (ISIS) militant fighters were killed in the fourth phase of the Euphrates Wrath Operation, that was launched on 13 April to liberate the northern countryside of Raqqa.

Also, at least 30 fighters of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have been killed by ISIS fire since 13 April.

“The fourth phase was aimed to clear the remaining northern countryside and the valley of Jalab from the ISIS and to remove the last obstacles in front of SDF, to prepare for the liberation of the city of Al-Raqqa and the completion of the siege with encirclement of the ISIS gangs,” the SDF leadership said in an official statement on Monday.

“Since the declaration of the fourth phase of the Operation Wrath of Euphrates, our forces have liberated dozens of villages and hamlets, inflicted heavy blows on the enemy and made them suffer dozens of losses,” it said.

“In addition, the northern side of the al-Jalab Valley was cleared of ISIS terrorists and our people in this region were rescued from the atrocity of terrorists and transferred to safe areas.”

Furthermore, the SDF called for more international support for over 20,000 IDPs that have recently escaped ISIS-held Raqqa city.

“At the same time, thousands of civilians have migrated to Rojava [Syrian Kurdistan] due to the intensity of war. The number of migrants has reached 20 thousand during the recent weeks. In this regard, we call on the United Nations, humanitarian aid organizations and democratic forces to provide support for these displaced civilians,” the SDF said.

According to the Syrian Democratic Forces, they also captured 8 ISIS members, and seized ISIS corpses.

SDF also seized a large quantity of ammunition from ISIS during the recent clashes in northern Raqqa, which included 22 Kalashnikov rifles, 4 BKC machine guns, 5 B7 rocket launchers, one 12.5 mm DShK, 2 motorbikes, one Hummer and one pick-up vehicle, 11 hand grenades, one Katyusha rocket launcher, the SDF said.

Al-Qaeda's Zawahiri calls for 'guerrilla war' in Syria
[Al Jazeera] al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodx al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra...
has called on the armed Syrian opposition to wage guerrilla warfare against the government of Bashir al-Assad and its allies.

In an audio tape titled "Syria will only bow to God", released on the internet on Sunday, Zawahiri urged Syrian rebels to "have patience and prepare themselves for a long war against the Crusaders and their Shia allies".

He urged them to adopt a "guerilla warfare" strategy because it would "weaken and drain the enemy".

The rebels' enemies "are targeting them because they are trying to establish an Islamic rule in Syria, as the West and its allies were doing everything they can to stop it".

California judge questions Trump order to cut funds to 'sanctuary cities'
The judge blocked the executive order. That's the bottom line. It's ok to selectively ignore federal law, I guess.

#2  Trump needs to start ignoring these. The judges don't follow the constitution, so he isn't bound by their decree.
