Somali troops stage short mutiny over unpaid salaries
[SHABELLENEWS] Hundreds of Mutinous Somali forces have on Thursday blocked the main streets around the headquarters of the defense Ministry in Mogadishu, to protest over unpaid salaries.

One of the Military soldiers staging the mutiny, told Radio Shabelle over the phone that their commanders have corrupted 4-months salaries paid by the Federal government of Somalia.

The situation has returned to normal, after the soldiers were convinced to arrive back to their barracks by the top commander of Somali National Army (SNA), he added.

President Mohammed Abdullahi Farmaajo who was elected in February 8, has promised to pay the regular salaries of the country’s army soldiers, to restore the law and order in Somalia.

#1  It is always a good idea to pay the Praetorians.

It helps to give them a Party now and then too.
It is even a good idea to sit down with them from time to time and share a Beer.

It is VERY Unwise to ignore men close to you who have guns... and are between you and the Door.

Macron heads to Mali to reaffirm French commitment to battle jihadists
[AlAhram] President Emmanuel Macron undertakes his first trip as commander-in-chief on Friday when he meets troops fighting Islamist forces of Evil in Mali where the security situation has worsened despite French intervention more than four years ago.

The Sahel, a politically fragile area whose remote desert spaces spanning from Mauritania in the west to Sudan in the east host a medley of jihadist groups, is seen as vulnerable after a series of attacks in recent months.

That has been brought further to light after a spike in violence across Mali, where the former colonial power intervened more than four years ago to drive out al Qaeda-linked forces of Evil who hijacked a rebellion in 2012 by ethnic Tuaregs and attempted to take control of the central government in Bamako.

Macron, a newcomer to international diplomacy, put counter-terrorism at the top of his security priorities during the election campaign, vowing to strengthen support for West African allies.

"Emmanuel Macron made the commitment during the campaign to immediately go and see troops engaged in the fight against terrorism," said a senior French diplomat.

The trip to Gao, where some 1,600 troops are based and where he will also hold talks with Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, will reaffirm Gay Paree' engagement, in stark contrast to his predecessor Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
, who began his term pulling troops out of Afghanistan.

After sending troops to Mali, La Belle France has since spread some 4,000 soldiers across the region to hunt down Islamists,
...that would be Operation Barkhane, named after a crescent-shaped dune in the Sahara desert. They are faced off against the local branch of Al Qaeda in North Africa in its latest iteration announced this March, being a compilation of the Tuaregs of Ansar Dine, al-Murabitoun, led by Algerian myrmidon Mokhtar Belmokhtar, and the Macina Brigades of central Mali: The Group to Support Islam and Moslems headed by Ansar Dine's Iyad Ag Ghaly. The other heads are now emirs, at least until clashing egos force a new formation...
while United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
' peacekeepers have been deployed to ensure Mali's stability.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the U.N.'s forces have lacked equipment and resources, making a political settlement between Tuaregs and the government in Mali increasingly fragile and paving the way for Islamists and traffickers to exploit a void in the north of the country.
No doubt the UN forces have been doing their bit to increase fragility, given the habits of most of the contributors: corruption, s3xual exploitation, and a lack of fellow feeling for those outside their tribe.
"Our objective in the short-term is to help the regional armies control their territory, especially the fragile border zones," said the diplomat. "The grinding of the peace processor is not going fast enough even if there is a glimmer of hope."

French officials acknowledge that Gay Paree is likely to have to keep its forces in the region for an indefinite period.

Diplomats said Macron wanted to fine-tune policy to ensure countries were also given more help to develop rather than just focusing on security aspects.

With La Belle France shouldering the bulk of European military operations overseas, and in particular in Africa, officials said the trip would also be an opportunity to outline his desire for a greater European role, something that La Belle France has been pushing for years, but with few tangible results.

"The Franco-German engine must give Europe impetus to play a bigger role in crucial dossiers such as the African Sahel," the diplomat said.

Eight Brotherhood members referred to Egypt's Grand Mufti for opinion on death sentences in Beheira police station case
The process also is a punishment. Quite possibly, after a few more years of the case winding its way through the courts, they will for some procedural reason be set free. Unless they are involved in another case that is simultaneously winding its way...
[AlAhram] An Egypt criminal court ordered that eight members of the now banned Muslim Brotherhood be referred to the country's Grand Mufti, in a preliminary step before the death sentences against the defendants can be finalised. The eight are convicted of attacking a police station in Nile Delta's Beheira governorate.

The Damanhour court is set on 17 June to issue its verdict, for those handed preliminary death sentences as well as 11 others in the case.

The preliminary death sentences are pending the non-binding consultative opinion of the country’s Grand Mufti, per Egypt's penal code.

Once the court issues its final verdict in the case, the defendants have the right to appeal it once again.

The defendants are convicted of forming a terrorist cell and shooting forces at Beheira’s Abo El-Matameer police station in 2015.

No one was killed during the 2015 attack.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan personally orders Turkish security guards to beat up protesters on US soil
[ALMASDARNEWS] On Thursday, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan unleashed his henchmen on around 50 anti-government protesters, injuring eleven people outside the residence of the Turkish ambassador in Washington according to official sources.

American demonstrators protested against Ankara’s policies in Iraq and Syria amid a meeting between Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
, two staunch NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
allies.

Now, footage has emerged from a new angle showing the vehicle where Erdogan sat on the back seat. At 0:13, an advisor appears to be given an important message. Seconds later, Turkish security guards begin beating up civilians in broad daylight:

The State Department condemned the attack as an assault on free speech and warned The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
that the action would not be tolerated. "We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms," said Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman.

The initial rush devolved into several smaller skirmishes as uniformed coppers, some in helmets and swinging collapsible batons, struggled to restore order.

Remarkably, no arrests were made despite the Turkish violence in broad daylight seemingly at the direct order of Erdogan himself who appeared to be upset over the provocative loudspeaker chants.

Turkey seeks arrest of owner, 3 staff of opposition daily: state media
[AlAhram] Turkish authorities issued arrest warrants on Friday for the owner and three employees of opposition daily Sozcu, state media reported, as the crackdown on opposition media widened.

The owner, Burak Akbay, and the three others, including the executive in charge of the website, Mediha Olgun, are accused of links to the movement led by Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
blamed for last year's failed coup, Anadolu news agency reported.

The fiercely anti-government and ultra-secularist daily whose name means "front man" is one of the country's bestselling papers.

Its slogan is: "If #Sozcu is silent, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
will be silent."

Istanbul prosecutors issued the warrants for the four including correspondent Gokmen Ulu and Yonca Kaleli, a finance executive, CNN Turk broadcaster said.

Anadolu said Olgun were tossed into the calaboose and Akbay was out of the country.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
Sozcu's lawyer Ismail Yilmaz denied arrest warrants had been issued, telling the private Dogan news agency warrants had been issued to seize and search their belongings.

Yilmaz confirmed Olgun was in jug but said that could be in connection with another investigation, Dogan reported.

The four are accused of "committing crimes on behalf of an armed terror organization", referring to the Gulen movement, CNN Turk reported.

CNN Turk said the suspects were wanted in connection with an online article published on the same day as the attempted coup on July 15 and the accusations levelled at them included "facilitating a real attack on the president".

The article in question revealed details of where President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
was on holiday in the upmarket Aegean resort of Marmaris, CNN Turk said, and had images of his hotel.

Sozcu is the second daily to be targeted after another leading opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet saw 20 staff members charged under the state of emergency imposed after the attempted putsch.

The daily is on occasion rabidly anti Erdogan and its angry front pages are regarded with some suspicion by some liberal Turks critical of the president.

Its sometimes lurid approach contrasts with the more moderate tone of Cumhuriyet, one of the country's oldest dailies.

According to the P24 press freedom website, there are 165 journalists behind bars in Turkey, most of whom were detained as part of the emergency imposed after the coup bid.

India-Pakistan
Cong for action against Hurriyat
[Daily Excelsior] The Congress today termed as "extremely serious" the allegations that Hurriyat leaders received funds from across the border and called for strong action as it involves national security.

AICC spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi also hit out at the central and the Jammu and Kashmire Governments saying there has never been such a rapid, accelerated and tragic decline in governance in the State as has been during the last 36 months.

"It is extremely serious. It is gross, brazen and blatant and deserves the strongest action in the shortest possible time and in the most effective manner. This undermines national security directly and completely," he said.

The Congress leader, however, trained his guns on the BJP saying its leaders are preaching on Kashmire even when they have been in power both at the Centre and the State, and alleged that there has been lack of governance in the State under them.

"What we are seeing everyday is homilies, preachings, lectures, sermons being given by none less than high Government functionaries to which the entire country, in a bemused, amused manner asks itself and the nation asks that whom are you giving lectures to," he said.

"Be it casualties, violence, lack of governance, lack of decision making, lack of co-ordination, security scenario different departments and Ministers pulling in directions, no consistency of policy etc. In 36 months we have seen the most rapid decline," he said.

Singh said the Congress has also been in power for 10 years in Kashmire amid external infiltrations, "but never before have we seen this kind of tragic state of affairs which makes the heart of every Indian bleed".

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing the role of Lashker-e-Toiba chief Hafiz Mohammed Saeed and hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani in subversive activities in Jammu and Kashmire.

The NIA named the two in its Preliminary Enquiry (PE), which precedes the filing of a case. It also named Naeem Khan, who was seen on television during a sting operation purportedly confessing to receiving money from Pakistain-based terror groups.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF invited to International Army Games competition in Russia
[Ynet] The IDF will send a delegation to compete in the fields of military medicine and logistics; annual competition allows countries to compete in fields of armor, paratroopers, military police and more.
What a wonderful opportunity to see what the neighbours can do, while not showing Israel's abilities.
For the first time, the IDF has been invited to participate in the International Army Games against 27 other countries, including the Syrian Army.

In the past three years, the Russians have been conducting an annual "military Olympics" in which various armies from the world compete in professional fields such as armor, paratroopers, military police, medicine, and more. The 2017 games will also include drone usage for the first time.

The upcoming games are scheduled to be held on August 22-27 in Bukovinka--a large open area near Moscow.

Last year, a contingent of Iranian paratroopers belonging to the Revolutionary Guards took part in the games.

The IDF is planning on participating in the military medicine and logistics events.

The London-based al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper reported on Tuesday that US generals and Russian military advisers were meeting on issues related to border security between Israel and Jordan and dealing with ISIS, according to the newspaper.

Israel is directly and actively involved in the arrangements that are being made in the region, and Jordan is operating a joint room with Russian and American partners to combat the infiltration of ISIS members into its territory. Israel's direct involvement in such talks constitute a high level of cooperation in the security of the Syrian-Jodan-Israel border region.

The Russians, together with the United States, have initiated the establishment of a large demilitarized zone in southern Syria near the border with Jordan, and the Russians are not interested in sending troops to monitor the sector and have no interest in the Iranians or Hezbollah being there as well.

The coordination with Israel is vital, as far as they are concerned, to ensure the success of this mission.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Huge turnout as Iranians deliver verdict on Rouhani
[DAWN] Iranians poured into polling stations on Friday to deliver their verdict on President Hassan Rouhani and his troubled efforts to rebuild ties with the world and kickstart the struggling economy.

There was a festive atmosphere in Tehran where Rouhani, a 68-year-old moderate holy man who spearheaded a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, was mobbed by cheering supporters as he voted in a city centre mosque.

"The enthusiastic participation of Iranians in the election reinforces our national power and security," he said, as polling stations reported morning queues were far longer than usual.

Rouhani, who has framed the vote as a choice between greater civil liberties and "extremism", faces stiff competition from hardline holy man Ebrahim Raisi, 56, who has positioned himself as a defender of the poor and called for a much tougher line with the West.

"We must all respect the vote of the people," Raisi said as he cast his ballot in southern Tehran.

But his campaign had already started to complain about the conduct of the vote even before polls closed, saying there had been hundreds of "propaganda actions" by Rouhani supporters at voting booths, which are banned under election laws.

Raisi has targeted working-class voters hit by high unemployment and austerity measures, as well as those who worry that the values of the 1979 revolution are under threat.

"His main focus is deprived people and he wants to fight corruption," said Mohsen, a 32-year-old Raisi supporter.

"Our country is surrounded by enemies -- if we don't strengthen our domestic situation, we will be harmed."

U.S. air strike in Syria hit ‘military point’, caused deaths: Syrian military source on state media
[IraqiNews] A military source on the Syrian government side said on Friday that a U.S. air strike against a Damascus-backed militia the day before hit "one of our military points", without elaborating, state media outlets reported.

The air strike late on Thursday killed several people and caused material damage, the source said, adding that this hampered efforts by the Syrian army and its allies to fight Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
The U.S. military carried out the strike on the militia as they headed towards the al-Tanf military base in southern Syria ‐ near the Syria-Iraq-Jordan border ‐ used by U.S. and U.S.-backed rebel forces.

U.S. officials said the strike was purely a defensive measure.

A member of the U.S.-backed Syrian rebel forces told Rooters the convoy comprised Syrian and Iranian-backed militias and was headed toward the Tanf base when they clashed with some rebel forces.

Syria’s ally Russia said on Friday that the strike had hit civilians and was unacceptable, Russian news agencies reported.
