Taliban suicide attack in Afghanistan over leaflet ‘insult’
[DAWN] A jacket wallah riding a cycle of violence went kaboom! outside an American base in Afghanistan on Wednesday, Afghan officials said, in an attack the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
claimed was Dire Revenge for a US leaflet deemed highly offensive to Moslems.

US and Afghan authorities confirmed several people were maimed in the late afternoon attack at Bagram Airfield, America’s largest base in the country. The Taliban grabbed credit and said it was in retaliation for "their insult to the Islamic creed".

NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and structure....
’s Resolute Support mission said in a statement that "an kaboom" had occurred "outside an entry control point" to Bagram that had caused a "small number of casualties". Taliban front man Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the attacker had killed and maimed "over 20 soldiers".

NATO forces frequently drop leaflets over large swathes of Afghanistan in an effort to persuade locals against supporting krazed killers.

Major General James Linder, who heads the US and NATO special operations forces in Afghanistan, issued a statement apologising for the leaflet design which he said was an "error".

Southern border reported blockaded as Qatrun leader confirms ‘big’ drop in migrants coming from Niger
[Libya Herald] Reports that the border with Niger and Chad has been closed today by an independent force from Qatrun have been partially confirmed by a usually reliable Tebu source.

According to Fezzan Libya Org, the force consisting of army regulars, volunteers and revolutionaries from Qatrun, some 240 kilometres south of Sebha, closed the entire southern border. Confirming the closure, the Tebu source, however, says that the force is led by Barka Shedemi, who is normally based in northern Niger. The source said that Shedemi announced today that he was now blockading the border to end people-smuggling from Niger into Libya.

He is said to control some 700 kilometres of the border having free range on both sides, in southern Libya and in Niger as well as Chad.

A veteran Tebu militia leader, he is reported to have some 200 vehicles at his disposal. In the past, he was based in southern Libya and is said to have a longstanding hatred of the Qaddadfa tribe, having been captured in the 1980s in festivities with them and had his hand and leg cut off by the Qadaffy regime after being accused of being a brigand.

There is no further confirmation of the closure so far.

The Tebu source claimed that Shedemi was hoping to be paid by the Europeans for his actions.

A major Tebu leader in Qatrun, Sheikh Omar Sandou, meanwhile today told the Libya Herald that there has been a major drop in recent weeks in migrants colonists passing through the desert town from the Nigerien border heading north to Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
. Although he did not have figures, he said that the decrease was "big".

Most migrants colonists, he added, stayed in the town for no more than a couple of weeks to earn enough money to carry on with the journey north. No migrants colonists, he added, came via Chad.

Mahmoud Warfali linked to new murders: report
[Libya Herald] There are unconfirmed reports of five recent summary executions in Ajdabiya in which the Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
major Mahmoud Warfali was involved. Warfali is supposed to be in LNA custody.

The LNA officer, for whom the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant , is accused of war crimes on the basis of videos showing the cold-blooded murder of 33 bound prisoners, in which the killer resembled Warfali.

After the ICC announced on 17 August that it wanted Warfali handed over for trial in the Hague, the Libyan National Army (LNA) said that on the orders of armed forces commander-in-chief Khalifa Hafter, he had been jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
on 2 August. The LNA also said that it was carrying out its own investigation into the summary executions. Last month an LNA source denied a rumour that Warfali had been released.

The Ajdabiya allegations include a sighting of Warfali in the town last night where he was said to be on a visit to LNA units in the Oil Crescent.

Paris ‘bomb factory’ suspects believed to have links to Syria
[NYPOST] French authorities investigating a suspected bomb factory near Gay Paree believe three suspects were preparing attacks and had made calls to Syria, a minister said Thursday.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the suspects were possibly planning to attack a bank and had made phone calls to unidentified contacts in Syria.

"Those under investigation spoke of wanting to blow up a bank with the TATP but the way we see it is they have links with terrorism, and this is the channel of investigation," Collomb told public radio station La Belle Franceinfo.

TATP, a peroxide-based explosive employed by Islamic Lion of Islams, has been used in several attacks in Western Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
in recent years, including Manchester in May, Brussels in 2016 and Gay Paree in 2015.

Two men were held Wednesday and the third man was detained Thursday, according to the Gay Paree prosecutor’s office, which provided no further information.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Don Smilzo looked for an avenue of escape. The only window opened a hundred feet above the moat. The nearest of the hired assassins hold a bloody axe.
The window was looking better all the time....

two French officials said authorities have found more explosive components in a garage rented by one of the three suspects.

A police source confirmed the new discovery in Thiais, a suburban city close to the Villejuif apartment where TATP was found Wednesday thanks to a tip from a plumber.

The Gay Paree daily Le Gay Pareeien reported that the plumber was working on a stubborn leak, according to Agence La Belle France-Presse.

He was outside the building when he saw chemicals on a balcony of the apartment, and noticed a soldering iron and a hot plate through the window, the paper reported, quoting a source close to the investigation.

A counterterrorism probe was opened under potential charges of "criminal terrorist association" and production, possession and transportation of explosive substances "in relation with a terrorist action by an organized gang."

The arrests raised questions about whether the suspects might be linked to a jihadist cell in Spain that carried out two vehicular attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils last month, AFP reported.

"It is possible there were links, but honestly I don’t know," Collomb said.

Former Turkish minister indicted in US for violating embargo on Iran
[Hurriyet Daily News] U.S. prosecutors have charged a former Turkish economy minister and a former general manager of a state bank with conspiring to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran, with a Turkish minister defending his predecessor.

The charges targeted former economy minister Zafer Çağlayan, former Halkbank general manager Süleyman Aslan and two others, according to the filing, dated on Sept. 6, from the U.S. attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York.

The U.S. indictment broadens a case targeting Turkish-Iranian businessman Reza Zarrab, who is still in prison in the U.S.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said he believed U.S. authorities had “ulterior motives” in prosecuting Zarrab.

Çağlayan, Aslan and the other two individuals are charged with “conspiring to use the U.S. financial system to conduct hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of transactions on behalf of the Government of Iran and other Iranian entities, which were barred by United States sanctions.”

Murad hints at ‘breakthrough’ as police bust militants’ network
[DAWN] Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has hinted at a breakthrough in the recent cases of coppers’s killing and an attempt on the life of leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, claiming that law enforcement and intelligence agencies had achieved "major successes" after the series of raids and operations in the past two days.

In his brief interaction with the media at PAF Base Masroor after attending a Defence Day ceremony on Wednesday, Mr Shah did not elaborate the nature of the success. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
sources said, some high-profile murderous Moslems had been placed in durance vile
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
in recent raids.

The chief minister did not reveal the number of arrests but said the killings were not the job of just one gang. "Different gangs are involved in these incidents," he said. "Some major arrests were made last night [Tuesday] and such gangs have been busted. This success would also help eliminate organised terrorism and crimes in the city. We have destroyed them to a considerable extent but still a lot of work has to be done."

Police maintain ambiguity about reported arrest of Ansarul Sharia head
Though the police neither confirmed nor denied the news reports on TV channels about the arrest of Ansarul Sharia Pakistain’s chief known as Dr Abdullah Hashmi in a raid on his house in Kaneez Fatima Housing Society, SSP Malir Rao Anwar, who has been actively involved in recent anti-militant operations, made a few claims lending strength to the reports of such a "success".

"We have broken their [ASP] network," SSP Anwar told Dawn. "We have seized several important objects, including gadgets, from the home of Abdul Karim Sarosh Siddiqi, a suspected criminal mastermind of the liquidation attempt on key man of the MQM, Khwaja Izharul Hasan. [The gadgets] could help the Sherlocks in solving the cases. With proactive policing and strong intelligence network, we have been coordinating with all law enforcement and intelligence agencies and also keeping an eye on Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
According to SSP Anwar, not much was known about members of the ASP network previously but "important" progress has been made as police, the Rangers, intelligence agencies and CTD have been working in close coordination with each other.

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) A senior Islamic State leader was killed, along with his companions, in airstrikes, north of Salahuddin, a security source said.

“Iraqi warplanes waged airstrikes against IS havens in several villages in the western coast of Shirqat town,” the source told Baghdad Today on Thursday.

“The raids destroyed five headquarters and a booby-trapped vehicle as well as killing IS leader, Ali Faraj al-Mardoud, along with 12 of his companions,” the source added.

Earlier this month, news reports indicated unprecedented displacement by IS families from Shirqat toward unknown destinations as liberation offensive nears.

The Iraqi army said in September its forces recaptured the western coast of Shirqat, located south of Mosul, on the west bank of the Tigris river, after being surrounded for months by Iraqi troops and the pro-government Shi’ite militias. The eastern coast of Shirqat, is still under the IS control.

Pivotal regions that link between each of Diyala, Salahuddin and Kirkuk, are still held by the militants which poses threats to the liberated regions. Iraqi troops are urged to prevent the militants infiltration between Salahuddin and Kirkuk provinces, especially the regions stretching along Hamreen mountains and Al-Azeem town.

The government is expected to launch military offensives at the few remaining IS havens, including in Salahuddin.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

2 wounded in bombing attack near Diyala Bridge

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Two people were wounded on Thursday when a bomb blast rocked an area southeast of Baghdad, a police source was quoted saying.

The source told Alsumaria News that an explosive device placed next to commercial shops in Diyala Bridge region went off, wounding two persons.

A security force cordoned the area off, while ambulances carried the casualties to hospital, the source said.

Violence and armed conflicts left 297 Iraqis dead and wounded during the month of ِAugust, according to a monthly count by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq which excludes security members deaths. Baghdad was the most affected province with 45 deaths and 135 injuries.

The Iraqi capital has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary groups and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake Islamic State-occupied areas in 2016. While most of of the explosions and attacks went without a claim of responsibility, Islamic State has claimed several incidents.

Some security observers believe that even after IS’s main havens across Iraqi provinces are conquered, the group may still constitute a security threat through sleeper cells and lone wolf attacks.

Philippine troops join MILF to fight breakaway group
[Inquirer] The Philippine military said it had teamed up with old enemies behind a long-running Muslim insurgency as it looks to eject a breakaway gang of radical militants pledging loyalty to the Islamic State. As artillery shells and rockets pounded targets in this farming town in Datu Salibo, Maguindanao, soldiers were seen mingling freely with several hundred Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters who have joined an assault on gunmen here.

The joint operation is the latest tactic by the government to try to stamp out pro-IS fighters, after more than three months of battling a separate faction of militants who have besieged Marawi City about 100 kilometers to the north.

Sixth Infantry Division commander Arnel dela Vega said militant groups had taken the opportunity “to build up their forces” while Philippine troops were engaged in Marawi. The alliance with MILF included “providing them with indirect fire support and even air support and other expertise,” he said adding that the awkwardness of fighting alongside former longtime foes had vanished.

The military is feeding intelligence to the MILF in the fight against about 60 militants led by Esmael Abdulmalik alias Abu Turaifi, a former MILF guerrilla leader. But Dela Vega said troops would not merge with the MILF fighting groups because they had “different operational tactics and procedures” in the conflict, which began in early August on marshlands here. He said the deal was a “win-win” situation for both the government and the MILF.

Senior MILF leader Mohagher Iqbal said the breakaway Abu Turaifi-led militants wanted to steal the MILF’s guerrilla army and had the same goals as the pro-IS militant faction seeking to carve out territory in Marawi.

Two Indonesian hostages rescued from Abu Sayyaf
[Reuters] Philippine troops rescued two Indonesian captives on Thursday after a gun battle that killed five of their Islamist militant captors in Mindanao. Five soldiers were also injured in the clash with about 20 members of the Abu Sayyaf on its stronghold of Jolo.

Brigadier-General Cirilito Sobejana said, "Minutes later, we intercepted a van which was carrying two Indonesian captives while pursuing the Abu Sayyaf after the encounter. They are now safe and undergoing tactical debriefing after medical checkup.”

Sobejana said the two Indonesian fishermen were seized aboard a Malaysian-registered boat in November last year in waters near Malaysia’s eastern state of Sabah. The army said the group is still holding about 18 captives on the islands of Jolo and Basilan, including a dozen foreigners from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Vietnam.

Aid convoy reaches Syria's Deir al-Zor after three-year siege
[Hurriyet Daily News] An aid convoy arrived at Deir al-Zor in eastern Syria on Sept. 7, bringing supplies to soldiers and civilians days after the Syrian army broke a three-year Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) siege, Syrian state media reported.

The Syrian army and its allies reached Deir al-Zor on Sept. 5 in a sudden advance following months of steady progress east across the desert. The army on Sept. 7 advanced against faceless myrmidons in a pocket they still hold further west, pro-Damascus media reported.

State TV broadcast footage of scores of residents cheering with relief in Deir al-Zor as the convoy arrived.
The United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
estimated that 93,000 civilians living under ISIS siege in Deir al-Zor had been in "extremely difficult" conditions, being supplied only by air drops.

The 40 trucks that reached the area carried basic needs such as fuel, food and medical supplies to civilians, and included two mobile clinics, state news agency SANA reported.

The army also holds another besieged enclave at the city's airbase, separated from its advancing forces by hundreds of metres of ISIS-held ground.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sept. 7 that the army had not yet connected with that enclave, and was working on expanding its corridor from the west.

ISIS mortar fire on neighbourhoods still surrounded near the air base killed at least seven civilians and maimed dozens more on Sept. 7, the British-based monitoring group said.

Also on the same day, the army advanced against ISIS faceless myrmidons in countryside east of the city of Hama, a media unit run by Damascus ally Hezbollah reported.

The advance, which saw forces recapture two villages there, is part of efforts to drive the faceless myrmidons out of an isolated pocket of territory they control east of Hama and Homs.

Separately, the U.S. special envoy to the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, Brett McGurk, said on Sept. 6 that a convoy of ISIS faceless myrmidons and families from the Syria-Leb border was still in open desert.

The coalition is using Arclight airstrikes to block the convoy from reaching ISIS-held territory in eastern Syria, to which the Syrian army and its ally Hezbollah were escorting it as part of a truce following fighting on the Syria-Leb border.

Israel hits Syria site reportedly used for chemical weapons
[Hurriyet Daily News] The Syrian army said Israel targeted a military site in Hama province early on Sept. 7 which a war monitor said could be linked to chemical weapons production.

The Arclight airstrike killed two soldiers and caused damage near the town of Masyaf, an army statement said. It warned of the "dangerous repercussions of this aggressive action to the security and stability of the region."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war, said the strike hit a Scientific Studies and Research Centre facility, an agency which the United States describes as Syria's chemical weapons manufacturer.

The strike took place the morning after U.N. Sherlocks said the Syrian government was responsible for a sarin poison gas attack in April.

Syria's government denies using chemical weapons and in 2013 it promised to surrender its chemical weapons programme, which it says it has done.

The Observatory said strikes also hit a military camp next to the centre that was used to store ground-to-ground rockets and where personnel of Iran and its ally, the Lebanese Hezbollah group, had been seen more than once.

An Israeli army spokeswoman declined to discuss reports of a strike in Syria. Israeli officials have in the past admitted that Israel has repeatedly struck weapons shipments believed to be bound for the Hezbollah, an ally of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

US warplanes takes out ISIS members running to stranded convoy

snuffies who are drawn "like moths to the flame" of a stranded convoy evacuating hundreds of hard boyz from Syria to the Iraqi border, according to a report on Thursday.

"We were able to exploit it and take advantage," Army Col. Ryan S. Dillon, a coalition front man, said as buses and trucks full of Islamic State fighters and their families were halted in the Syrian desert, The Stars and Stripes reported.

"Like moths to the flame," Dillon described the more than 40 vehicles, including armored vehicles and a tank disguised as a truck, that came to aid the hapless convoy. "We were able to continue to just observe and pick them off one at a time."

As snuffies stray too far from the protection of the caravan, US warplanes are picking them off, Dillon said. adding that the strikes have also destroyed IS vehicles coming to the region from terrorist-held areas.

All together, he said about 85 snuffies have been killed since the fleet of vehicles was stopped about 10 days ago, saving coalition fighters from having to hunt them down.

More than 300 IS jihadists and an equal number of men and women set off about 10 days ago from the Leb-Syrian border after brokering a deal with Leb’s Hezbollah group for safe passage through the Syria-government held territory.

The convoy "has not ... and will not reach Iraq," Brett McGurk, special presidential envoy for the coalition, said Wednesday on Twitter.

#2  I think they used to whine about call it 'disproportionate force'. Given a Republican US president, I'm surprised it's not back in vogue.

#3  I'm still puzzled (sorta) over Hesb'allah and their Iranian minders for both sending IS out towards Iraq (and Iran) and getting upset that the convoy is stranded.

#4  Wonder what prizes they are protecting?

#5  Silly question: Why is there a stranded convoy? 10 days later. Why not an obliterated convoy 2 days later?

Several kidnapped by ISIS in Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State have arrested tens of civilians in western Anbar and took them to unknown destination, Alghad Press reported on Thursday.

The militant group arrested more than fifty youths in Qaim town, western Anbar, and took them to unknown place.

On Wednesday, fighter jets bombarded an IS store leaving it completely destroyed with ten members killed. Coalition jets pounded, earlier this week, house of IS leader Hilal Ismail al-Salmani in the town of al-Qaim, killing him and seven of his companions in Qaim.

Last week, the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said the air force bombarded six IS locations in Qaim, killing 94 members, including a senior security commander and a close aide to the group’s supreme leader abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Anbar’s western towns of Anah, Qaim and Rawa are still held by the extremist group since 2014, when it occupied one third of Iraq to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate. Iraqi troops were able to return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them.

Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition regularly pound IS locations in the province.

Late July, Iraqi army jets reportedly dropped millions of leaflets on western Anbar telling locals that liberation offensives for the province were nearing.

ISIS executes 12 in Kirkuk

Islamic State militants have executed 12 civilians at their Kirkuk stronghold, a local source was quoted saying on Thursday as the province awaits imminent military operations against the extremist group.

The source told Alsumaria News that the group executed 12 residents of Hawija, the group’s stronghold in the southwest of the province. The execution was carried out at al-Bakkara military base.

The source did not mention an exact reason for the execution, nor the method by which it was implemented, but said the militants had embarked on a series of mass executions of their prisoners.

IS militants have regularly executed civilians for various reasons including escaping the group’s strongholds across the country, contacting security authorities and violating the group’s extreme religious rules.

A week ago, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said operations would launch sooner to recapture Hawija. The announcement came shortly after the JOC said it totally took over Tal Afar, the Islamic State’s last stronghold in Nineveh province. Earlier in July, Iraqi troops, backed by a United States-led coalition, recaptured Mosul, Islamic State’s former capital.

The United Nations predicts 85.000 civilians to flee Hawija as anticipated military operations launch to liberate the province from IS.

ISIS Big Burqa, family die in airstrike in Hawija

Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State female leader was killed along with her husband and two of her sons were killed as airstrike targeted the group’s camp in southwest of Kirkuk, a local source said on Thursday.

Speaking to AlSumaria News on Thursday, the source said, “IS female leader in charge of the women’s brigade in Hawija, Kirkuk, known as princess of IS women, was killed along her husband and two sons in airstrike that targeted the group’s camp in the northern side of Hawija.”

“Airstrikes have been on the rise in Hawija over the past few days, targeting IS rest houses and camps and leaving casualties,” the source, who preferred anonymity, added.

Hawija and other neighboring regions, west of Kirkuk, have been held by IS since mid-2014, when the group emerged to proclaim an Islamic “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria. The group executed dozens of civilians and security members there, forcing thousands to flee homes.

Earlier this week, further reinforcements from the Federal Police were sent from Baghdad to the town, as the military command declared last week, the end of operations in Tal Afar, the militants’ last haven west of Nineveh, and the approach of the launch of offensives for Hawija.
