Trey Gowdy Wants James Comey Back Before Congress For Questioning
[Daily Caller] GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy said Thursday that there is "sufficient factual basis" to investigate why former FBI Director James Comey decided not to charge Hillary Clinton before interviewing key witnesses.

"There is sufficient factual basis to bring him in and ask him, ’When did you make up your mind that you weren’t going to charge Secretary Clinton?’ I can tell you because I’ve seen with my own eyes he made up his mind before he interviewed her," Gowdy told Fox News. "How far back, whether it was two weeks or two months, quite frankly is immaterial to me. He did it before he interviewed the last witness."

One of the first rules of an investigation is to hold off on a final conclusion until reviewing all evidence that witnesses present, something that Comey did not do, according to Gowdy.

"If there’s anything that’s axiomatic in investigations it’s that you don’t make up your mind until you interview the last witness. It is beyond dispute that he made up his mind not to charge Secretary Clinton before he interviewed her. There’s no question about that. What my friends in the Senate have uncovered is he may well have made up his mind before he interviewed the last dozen witnesses," Gowdy said.

The congressman stopped short of agreeing with White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders that Comey was guilty, and said that if someone in the administration has evidence of wrongdoing, they should refer it to the Department of Justice.

"Alleging criminal violations is very serious which is why I don’t do it. Press secretaries don’t get to make that call. Members of Congress don’t get to make that call. Reporters don’t get to make that call. That’s an executive branch function after an investigation, a charging decision is made by a career prosecutor," he said. "If it’s that clean and clear I’m sure she [Sanders] referred it to the Department of Justice."

"How in the world my fellow citizens can have confidence in an investigation where you reached a conclusion before you even gather all the facts and all the evidence is stunning," Gowdy said.

Three Italians die after falling into hole at volcano
[DAWN] An Italian couple and their 11-year-old son were killed on Tuesday when a hole opened up in the ground at a bubbling volcanic crater near Naples, a popular tourist site.

Italia’s fire brigade said it pulled three dead bodies from a shallow hole in a section of the crater at the Solfatara volcano, which was surrounded by a wooden fence meant to keep tourists out.

The victims were a 45-year-old man, a 42-year-old woman and their son. Another seven-year-old son did not fall into the hole and was unharmed, national fire brigade front man Luca Cari said.

"Either there was a small kaboom, or the ground simply gave way from their weight, and they fell into this hole," Cari said. "It was inside a fenced-off area."

Firemen on the scene said the three victims, who were on holiday from northern Italia, appeared to have died from asphyxia, possibly because of hot gases emanating from the ground. The official cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

The Solfatara volcano is one of many volcanic craters in the Campi Flegrei area, 20 kilometres west of Naples, which first opened up to tourists in 1900, according to its website.

Bill With Silencer Reform and Protections for Gun Owners Passes Committee
[Free Beacon] A bill that would reform silencer regulations and add certain protections for gun owners and hunters passed out of a committee in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

H.R. 3668, known as the SHARE Act, passed through the House Committee on Natural Resources after hearings on it were held in the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands yesterday. The bill includes a number of gun reforms that gun-rights and hunting activists have been pursuing for years. Silencer deregulation, further protections for interstate transport of firearms, further protections on the importation of firearms and ammunition, further protections on certain firearms and ammunition from reclassification in order to make them illegal, and increased access to federal public lands for hunting and fishing are all included in the bill.

South Africa's Richest Man Calls President Zuma's Policy ‘Theft'
[Bloomberg] South Africa’s richest man Johann Rupert said "radical economic transformation," the policy championed by the country’s President Jacob Zuma to reduce racial inequality, is no more than theft.

"Radical economic transformation is just a code word for theft," Rupert said on the sidelines of Richemont’s annual general meeting in Geneva on Wednesday. "That’s what’s happening there. They’re raiding the state’s coffers. And it’s public knowledge."
Tribal kaffir officials loot treasury? Who knew ?
South Africa’s former graft ombudsman alleged in a November report that Zuma allowed members of the wealthy Gupta family, who are in business with his son, to influence cabinet appointments and the award of state contracts. And a study released in March by a team of academics concluded that Zuma, the Guptas and their allies had orchestrated "a silent coup," securing control over key positions in the state, enabling them to allegedly steal billions of rand. Zuma and the Guptas deny wrongdoing.

A trove of leaked emails dubbed the ’Gupta Leaks’ have formed the basis for a raft of stories by South African media that have alleged corruption linked to the Guptas and government officials.

Zuma’s spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga said he was in a meeting when called for comment.

Bell Pottinger LLP, the U.K. public-relations firm founded by an adviser to Margaret Thatcher lost clients and staff over its controversial work for the Gupta family in South Africa and was expelled from the U.K.’s PR trade body last week. It was slammed for stoking racial tensions by mounting a campaign targeting so-called white monopoly capital, and filed for administration on Tuesday. Its targets included Rupert, who has a net worth of $8.2 billion.

"They were hired to deflect attention from the public anger against what’s happening to the state’s finances," said Rupert. "That was their role."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia Has a Destroyed Nuclear Submarine (Loaded with Nukes) Lying at the Bottom of the Sea
[The National Interest] Only four men had been killed in the incident so far, but after the submarine sank many men succumbed to the thirty-six-degree (Fahrenheit) water temperatures. After an hour the fishing boats Alexi Khlobystov and Oma arrived and rescued thirty men, some of whom later succumbed to their injuries. Of the original sixty-nine men on board the submarine when disaster struck, forty-two died, including Captain First Rank Vanin.

In the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union constructed a super submarine unlike any other. Fast and capable of astounding depths for a combat submersible, the submarine Komsomolets was introduced in 1984, heralded as a new direction for the Soviet Navy.

Five years later, Komsomolets and its nuclear weapons were on the bottom of the ocean, two-thirds of its crew killed by what was considered yet another example of Soviet incompetence.

The history of the Komsomolets goes as far back as 1966. A team at the Rubin Design Bureau under N. A. Klimov and head designer Y. N. Kormilitsin was instructed to begin research into a Project 685, a deep-diving submarine. The research effort dragged on for eight years, likely due to a lack of a suitable metal that could withstand the immense pressures of the deep. In 1974, however, the double-hulled design was completed, with a titanium alloy chosen for the inner hull.

Project 685, also known as K-278, was to be a prototype boat to test future deep-diving Soviet submarines. The Sevmash shipyard began construction on April 22, 1978 and the ship was officially completed on May 30, 1983. The difficulty in machining titanium contributed to the unusually long construction period.

K-278 was 360 feet long and forty feet wide, with the inner hull approximately twenty-four feet wide. It had a submerged displacement of 6,500 tons, and the use of titanium instead of steel made it notably lighter. It had a unique double hull, with the inner hull made of titanium, that gave it its deep-diving capability. The inner hull was further divided into seven compartments, two of which were reinforced to create a safe zone for the crew, and an escape capsule was built into the sail to allow the crew to abandon ship while submerged at depths of up to 1,500 meters.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea threatens to ‘reduce US to ashes'
[news.com.au] A NEW threat directed at America and Japan is certain to heighten fears of a North Korean nuclear strike.
The Hermit Kingdom’s state agency on Thursday threatened to use nuclear weapons to "sink" Japan and reduce the United States "to ashes and darkness" for supporting new sanctions.

Pyongyang’s Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, which handles the North’s external ties and propaganda, also called for the breakup of the Security Council, which it called "a tool of evil" made up of "money-bribed" countries that move at the order of the United States.

"The four islands of the archipelago should be sunken into the sea by the nuclear bomb of Juche. Japan is no longer needed to exist near us," the committee said in a statement.
The North also targeted the US directly. "Let’s reduce the US mainland into ashes and darkness. Let’s vent our spite with mobilisation of all retaliation means which have been prepared till now," the statement said.

The threat follows the release of satellite imagery taken just days after North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test. The images show the secretive state may be preparing for another blast.

China Sold Trucks Used With North Korean Missiles
[Free Beacon] Chinese military support to North Korea's missile programs included transfers of rocket transporters, according to a new report by a United Nations panel of experts.

The report by the expert panel of the UN Security Council identified Chinese-origin trucks shown in a military parade last April carrying China's new KN-11 submarine-launched ballistic missile.

"The trucks carried the ’Sinotruk' logo on the fuel tank and shared some identical features with the Sinotruk Howo 6×6 series trucks shown at the 10 October 2015 military parade," the report said.

It is the second significant transfer of strategic missile technology from China identified by the panel.

In June 2013 the panel revealed the sale by China in 2011 of six to eight transporter erector launchers, known as TELs, that are now part of North Korea's first road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile system, the KN-08.

China claimed the KN-08 TEL vehicles were sold as lumber haulers. However, analysts said the 16-wheel launchers are too wide for logging roads. The launchers are made by the Sanjiang Special Truck Co. of the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC).

An earlier UN report in April said Chinese electronic components were found in debris of a North Korean missile test that landed in the Sea of Japan in 2016.

The latest disclosure on Chinese military assistance to North Korea comes amid reports the regime of Kim Jong Un is rapidly developing long-range nuclear missiles while stepping up threats to fire them at American cities and territory.

Rep. Robert Pittenger (R., N.C.) said the report on Chinese support shows that China has not been a good faith partner to the United States on North Korea.

North Korea vows to boost weapons programmes after 'evil' UN sanctions
[DAWN] North Korea vowed on Wednesday to accelerate its weapons programmes in response to the "evil" sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council following its latest and most powerful nuclear test.

The respected 38 North website in the US raised its estimate for the yield from the kaboom, which Pyongyang says was a hydrogen bomb small enough to fit onto a missile, to around 250 kilotons ‐ more than 16 times the size of the device that devastated Hiroshima in 1945.

The detonation, Pyongyang's sixth nuclear blast, prompted global condemnation and came after it carried out two intercontinental ballistic missile launches in July that appeared to bring much of the US into range.

Wall Street hits record high - without help from Apple
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street edged up to a record high on Wednesday as gains in consumer discretionary and energy stocks offset losses in technology heavyweight Apple Inc.

Shares of Apple (AAPL.O) dropped 0.8 percent on concerns that the company’s newly launched iPhone X is too expensive and because its availability starting in November was later than expected. With the widely held stock up 37 percent so far this year, some analysts said it was time to cash in gains.

"Apple to a certain extent is a ’sell the news’ event," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities in New York. "A great deal of expectation has been built into the stock."

Even with Apple’s losses, the S&P 500, Dow Jones industrial average and the Nasdaq all closed at record levels, helped by other consumer stocks.

The S&P energy index .SPNY rose after the International Energy Agency said that a global surplus of crude was starting to shrink.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI rose rose 39.32 points, or 0.18 percent, to 22,158.18 The S&P 500 .SPX edged upgained 1.89 points, or 0.08 percent, to 2,498.37, and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC added 5.91 points, or 0.09 percent, to 6,460.19.

The indexes have hit several records this year, despite setbacks caused by turmoil in the White House, the timing of U.S. interest rate hikes, doubts about President Donald Trump’s ability to push through his pro-business reforms, and lately, tensions over a nuclear-weapons-capable North Korea.

The S&P 500, up 11.6 percent in 2017, is trading at 17.6 times expected earnings, expensive compared with its 10-year average of 14.3, according to Thomson Reuters Datastream.

Europe
Fearing Russia, Sweden holds biggest war games in 20 years
GOTHENBURG, Sweden (Reuters) - Neutral Sweden has launched its biggest war games in two decades with support from NATO countries, drilling 19,000 troops after years of spending cuts that have left the country fearful of Russia’s growing military strength.

On the eve of Russia’s biggest maneuvers since 2013, which NATO says will be greater than the 13,000 troops Moscow says are involved, Sweden will simulate an attack from the east on the Baltic island of Gotland, near the Swedish mainland.

"The security situation has taken a turn for the worse," Micael Byden, the commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, said during a presentation of the three-week-long exercise.

Sweden, like the Baltics, Poland and much of the West, has been deeply troubled by Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula Crimea and its support for rebels in eastern Ukraine.

"Russia is the country that affects security in Europe right now with its actions - the annexation of the Crimea and continued battles in eastern Ukraine - so it is clear that we are watching very closely what Russia is doing," Byden said.

Judge Considers Defying Trump Over Arpaio Pardon
Although President Donald Trump has issued a full pardon to former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, and his lawyers have filed a motion seeking to have his conviction thrown out as a result, District Court Judge Susan Bolton has so far refused to grant the motion, and is in fact considering requests before her that she deny it.

In papers lodged with her last week, it was argued that "The president can’t use the pardon power to immunize lawless officials from consequences for violating people’s constitutional rights." This contrasts with his lawyers’ arguments that "The president’s pardon moots the case, and it warrants an automatic vacatur of all opinions, judgments, and verdicts related to the criminal charge."

The Justice Department supports his position, telling the judge on Monday that "the government agrees that the Court should vacate all orders and dismiss the case as moot."

But although many commentators have argued that the President’s pardoning power is "unlimited," and some have even worried that he might issue blanket pardons to all those being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to frustrate the investigation, she is reviewing contrary legal arguments.

These counter arguments contend that the president’s constitutional power to issue pardons "is limited by later-enacted amendments, starting with the Bill of Rights. For example, were a president to announce that he planned to pardon all white defendants convicted of a certain crime but not all black defendants, that would conflict with the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause."

#12  ...I'm not a lawyer, but the way I'm reading it is that Judge Bolton is under no requirement to vacate Sheriff Arpaio's conviction, and the President's pardon doesn't moot the case. It would be nice if it was vacated, but the bottom line is that although a pardon might "warrants an automatic vacatur of all opinions, judgments, and verdicts related to the criminal charge.", there's no legal requirement to.

PPP leader booked for fleeing from court premises
[DAWN] Police started the paperwork but haven't done much else on Tuesday against the provincial president of the Pakistain Peoples Party, Ali Madad Jattak, on charges of cheating police and escaping from court premises after rejection of an interim bail application in a murder case.

Police also started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Sub-Inspector Muhammad Ashraf for showing negligence in arresting Mr Jattak after rejection of his application. The police officer was suspended and tossed in the clink

Civil Lines police said that CIA had lodged a complaint against Mr Jattak in case number 157/17 under sections 223, 224 and 225 for cheating police and fleeing from court premises.

Mr Jattak had appeared before the sessions judge for confirmation of his bail but fled when his bail plea was disapproved.

Police raided the residence of the PPP leader but could not find him there.

Karachi 'honour killing': Exhumed bodies of teenage couple bear electrocution, torture marks
[DAWN] The bodies of a teenage couple in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
feared to have been murdered by their families after they wished to contract a free-will marriage were found bearing electrocution and torture marks following a post-mortem examination on Wednesday, officials said.

The bodies of the girl (15), and the boy (17), were exhumed from the Mauladad graveyard in Sherpao Colony in the presence of Azhar Ali Kalhoro, a judicial magistrate, and a team of doctors and police officials.

Civil Hospital Karachi Additional Police Surgeon Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi confirmed that "there were visible signs of electric shock and torture on both bodies."

Shah Latif Town Police Investigating Officer (IO) Ghulam Asghar Sheikh told Dawn that the girl and boy fled their homes on Aug 14 and stayed at the home of a relative in Sherpao Colony as they intended to marry of their own will. The relative, however, informed the parents of both victims, who then took them away.

After the development, a 30-35 person jirga was held, presided over by a local tribal elder identified as Sartaj, the IO said.

Following the jirga, the girl was electrocuted at around 11pm on Aug 15, while the boy was electrocuted around 3am on Aug 16, the IO added.

Police got wind of the case through an informant and subsequently filed a first information report on behalf of the state, after which four accused ─ the fathers and uncles of the victims ─ were locked away
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
on Aug 21.

IO Sheikh said the accused, who had confessed to the crime, claimed to repent killing the children, alleging they were under the pressure of the jirga which urged them to murder the pair in order to to protect the 'honour' of their tribe.

#1  Fine. Hang the sadistic murderer and anyone in the Jirga who voted in favor of the "honour" killing. They can argue amongst themselves without food or water until they cough up the names of at least 51% of their members for hanging.

The rest can go spread the good word of what happened.

Karachi police arrest five over alleged torture of domestic helper
[DAWN] Police on Wednesday tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
the employers of a teenage domestic helper in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
's Defence Housing Authority area (DHA) after they were accused of criminally assaulting the girl, officials said.

The 16-year-old, a resident of Qayyumabad
...a suburb of Korangi Town, if you know where that is...
, was allegedly beaten and tortured by her employers with a hot iron on Tuesday when they suspected her of stealing from their home and being a bad influence on their four-year-old daughter, police said.

Darakhshan Station House Officer Aurangzeb Khattak claimed the girl "suffered iron-inflicted torture by her employers".

Following the incident, the girl was admitted to Civil Hospital Burns Unit for treatment.

She could not be medically examined on Wednesday as there was no female medico-legal officer available, Senior Superintendent Police South Javed Akbar Riaz said, adding her examination would take place on Thursday.

Additional Police Surgeon Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi was able to confirm, however, that the teenager had sustained burn wounds on her face and her hair had been chopped off.

Police have arrested a couple ─ her employers ─ and three others after her father registered a first information report (FIR) under sections 324 (attempt to commit willful murder) and 337 (shajjah) of the Pakistain Penal Code.

Critical, but not sure what that is. Doing the jobs robots don't want to do: cleaning the restrooms, dealing with customers not up to date on technology. Even out here in Podunk some fast foods you can order and pay with your PED. Only thing a person does is hand over the food, and usually don't get that right - missing food, wonder what disease they have, if they spit in the food.

This looks like a handy retro-fit of existing FF work space. Perhaps in the future purpose built FF joint burgers go across a salamander, or through a traeger like cook zone.

As far as robots making food, been going on for a long time. Those chicken nuggets which are pre-cooked, all I am doing is warming them back up.

Naval Public Shipyards Are in Bad Shape, Says GAO
NORFOLK -- The Navy's four public shipyards, including Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, are in such bad shape that they are not fully meeting the Navy's operational needs, the U.S. Government Accountability Office said in a sharply critical report released Tuesday.

"Navy data show that the cost of backlogged restoration and maintenance projects at the shipyards has grown by 41 percent over five years, to a Navy-estimated $4.86 billion, and will take at least 19 years (through fiscal year 2036) to clear," the GAO stated.

While the Navy committed to more capital investment and developed an improvement plan in 2013 to turn the situation around, "the shipyards' facilities and equipment remain in poor condition," according to the GAO, Congress' watchdog agency.

Military Career Destroyed After Reprimand of Lesbians Showing ‘Inappropriate Behavior'
Moved to Page 3
[100PpercentFedUp] LTC Downey’s troubles began in 2012 when he made the "politically incorrect" effort to prevent two lesbian female officers under his command from violating Army regulations regarding public displays of affection. The two officers, a Captain and a Lieutenant, were in uniform at a formal military ball and were on the dance floor engaged in prolonged French kissing, publicly taking off each other’s uniform jackets, and other intimate and salacious conduct.

Once he became aware of the situation, LTC Downey took immediate action to stop the inappropriate behavior. He also attempted to prevent other soldiers from photographing and videotaping the officers’ inappropriate conduct, which he believed would embarrass the unit as well as the offending officers. In the process of lowering the camera of an enlisted soldier, the camera accidentally made contact with the soldier’s nose.

As a result, despite the recommendations of LTC Downey’s immediate superior, General Mark Milley ordered an investigation and a subsequent Article 15 hearing where he acted as the presiding officer on charges of assault consummated by battery and violation of the repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy.

The Article 15 proceeding, which lasted approximately 5 hours, was more concerned about offending homosexual advocacy groups than the guilt or innocence of LTC Downey. General Milley found LTC Downey guilty of the charge of assault consummated by battery. LTC Downey was issued reprimands for both violations, relieved of command, issued a negative Officer Evaluation Report, and removed from the attendance list of the National War College.

Chelsea Manning named visiting fellow at Harvard
[Mil Times] Chelsea Manning will be joining Harvard University as a visiting fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, according to the school’s website.

Manning will speak on issues of LGBTQ identity in the military, Institute of Politics Fellows co-chairs Emily Hall and Jason Ge wrote in an announcement posted Wednesday.

"We welcome the breadth of thought-provoking viewpoints on race, gender, politics and the media," Bill Delahunt, IOP acting director, said in the announcement.

Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst, was convicted in 2013 for leaking a huge cache of classified and sensitive documents. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison after a military judge found her guilty of six Espionage Act violations and multiple other charges relating to the dissemination of more than 700,000 classified military and State Department documents to WikiLeaks.

Manning was acquitted on the most serious charge of aiding the enemy.

Government
US bans government use of software from Russian firm Kaspersky
[AlAhram] The US government banned the use of Kaspersky security software in federal offices Wednesday, saying the Russian company has risky ties to Russian intelligence that threaten US national security.

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke ordered all government offices to remove and replace any of the company's popular anti-hacker software in use within 90 days.

"The department is concerned about the ties between certain Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence and other government agencies," Duke said in a statement.

She also expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
that Russian intelligence agencies can by law request or compel assistance from Kaspersky, including in intercepting communications transiting Russian networks.

"The risk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems directly implicates US national security," Duke said.

The move comes amid heightened strains between Russia and the US over Moscow's alleged interference in last year's US presidential election.

Kaspersky was already finding the government shut to its business, according to US companies it competes with.

Earlier this year six top intelligence and security officials told a Congressional hearing that they would not use Kaspersky software.

In July the government's General Services Administration issued an advisory against using it.

Last week Senator Jeanne Shaheen said she would attach to a crucial defense department appropriations bill a law banning government use of Kaspersky products.

Based in Moscow, Kaspersky has been selling its popular and highly regarded software around the world for two decade and does 85 percent of its business outside of Russia, including with multiple governments, according to the company.

It has repeatedly denied having anything more than business ties to the Kremlin.

"Kaspersky Lab doesn't have inappropriate ties with any government, which is why no credible evidence has been presented publicly by anyone or any organization to back up the false allegations made against the company," the company told AFP in an email.

"The only conclusion seems to be that Kaspersky Lab, a private company, is caught in the middle of a geopolitical fight, and it's being treated unfairly even though the company has never helped, nor will help, any government in the world with its cyberespionage or offensive cyber efforts."

Company founder and chief executive Eugene Kaspersky said he has repeatedly offered to present the company's source code to US officials for an audit, but has not been given the opportunity to do so.
