Afghanistan
Butchers bill in Uruzgan rises to 24
At least 24 Afghan security forces were killed in the past four days in clashes in central Uruzgan province, local officials confirmed on Thursday.

The clashes started four days ago in Chora district of the province, officials said adding that 18 army soldiers and six policemen were killed.

“Nearly 30 Taliban insurgents were also killed in clashes,” officials said adding that “some parts of the district fell to the Taliban but with the arrival of reinforcements, we have re-taken the areas.”

The Ministry of Defense confirmed the battle but said at least 20 soldiers were killed in the fighting.

Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri told reporters at a press briefing that the Taliban launched a coordinated attack on government forces’ outposts in Chora district in Uruzgan, where the reinforcements were sent but despite many efforts they could not save the forces.

“The government forces showed encouragement and they resisted but unfortunately some soldiers were martyred due to a high pressure from the enemy and as our (reinforcement) forces could not reach the area in time. The ministry of defense sends its condolences to their families and wish peace for their departed souls,” he said.

The Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah meanwhile said at a gathering in Kabul that more attention should be paid to the families of security forces killed in battle.

“It is an honor to remember the sacrifices of the Afghan forces and we send our condolences to the families of those who died while defending their country,” he said.

Photographs meanwhile were posted of the fallen soldiers on social media platforms on Thursday – which drove home the fact that so many troops are losing their lives while fighting for their country.

“The problems inside government between leaders results in an inattention to the security forces who sacrifice their lives,” said Ahmad, a resident of Kabul.

“Our forces are sacrificing their lives every day. They are not receiving proper equipment, food and other assistance on the battlefield,” said Haroon Motarif, a civil society activist in Kabul.

Taliban has confirmed the clash.

turbans and injured four others in heavy fighting with the Death Eaters in Bariire location in southern region.

Deputy Governor of Lower Shabelle region, Abdifitah Haji Abdulle, told news hounds that al-Shabaab turbans attacked Somalia National Army base in Bariire, sparking fierce fighting between the army and Lion of Islams.

"Terrorists attacked army bases in Bariire location in Lower Shabelle region today, then fighting broke out that lasted about two hours. Somali National Army killed 3 al-Shabaab turbans and maimed 4 others," Abdulle said.

Abdulle added that there were no casualties on Somali National Army side during the fighting in the area.

A resident in Bariire told Xinhua by phone that residents have deserted the town due to fears of retaliatory attacks by the Lion of Islams.

"I cannot tell the number of casualties of the fresh fighting today, but casualties will only be from warring sides here because residents were displaced already," the resident said.

in raids on three locations on Wednesday, an official source in the newly-created Presidency of State Security said in a statement on state-run television.

Deadly bombing and shooting attacks have been mounted by Islamic State Lions of Islam against security forces and Shi’ite Moslems in Saudi Arabia.

Islamic State has for years criticized the leadership of the Western-allied kingdom, the world’s top oil exporter, accusing it of deviating from their strict interpretation of Islam and advancing the interests of their U.S. enemies.

Thursday’s statement said a jacket wallah in the eastern Riyadh district of al-Rimal detonated his vest after security forces surrounded a house used to manufacture boom jackets and explosives.

Another murderous Moslem was killed by security forces after he holed up with firearms in an apartment in the western district of al-Namar, it said.

The third raid was at a horse stable in the southern Riyadh suburb of al-Ghanamia which the statement said had been used as a headquarters.

Security forces closed off several areas in Riyadh on Wednesday, and videos shared online showed a plume of smoke rising at one location.

15 killed, 20 injured as suicide blast hits shrine in SW Pakistan
[NEWS.XINHUANET] At least 15 people were killed and over 20 others injured when a jacket wallah went kaboom! at the entrance gate of a shrine in Pakistain's southwest Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
province on Thursday evening, officials said.

Confirming the corpse count, spokesperson of Balochistan government, Anwaar ul Haq Kakar said that the killed people also included a policeman.

Provincial Home Minister of Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti said the blast happened during the Urs (death anniversary of the shrine's saint) celebrations at the Fateh Pur shrine.

He said the bomber went kaboom! near the entrance gate of the portion allocated for women in the shrine, located in Jhal Magsi area, some 300 km away from historic provincial capital of Quetta.

The minister said the bomber tried to enter the shrine, but went kaboom! when the on-duty policeman stopped him for frisking.

Police said there were around 800 to 1,000 people inside the shrine when the incident happened.

The shrine is located at a remote place and the nearest hospital in the area can only accommodate 12 people, so the rescue teams are shifting the injured people to hospital in neighboring districts.

Locals said the corpse count is feared to rise as it may take rescue teams two to three hours to reach the hospitals in neighboring areas.
According to Al Ahram, it was a Sufi shrine.

Kirkuk Kombat Kronicle
Iraqi militia captures al-Riyad region

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) The pro-government paramilitary troops have announced liberation of another region in southeast of Hawija, Kirkuk.

The media service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said in a statement “the 26th brigade, backed by army jets, liberated on Thursday al-Riyad region, southeast of Hawija, and started combing it.”

Earlier on the day, PMFs liberated other villages in north of Hawija.

Joint Operations Command’s top general, Abdul-Amir Yarallah, said army, Federal Police, Rapid Response Forces and the Popular Mobilization forces announced on Thursday taking over the town of Hawija. 98 villages were seized back, while 196 militants were killed.

On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and the Joint Operations Command announced beginning of the second phase of Hawija offensive.

According to Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell, 557 IS militants were killed, while more than 100 villages and regions were liberated during the first phase.

Having recaptured Hawija, Iraqi troops still have only western Anbar’s towns of Rawa and Qaim remain under the militant’s control. Iraqi troops recaptured the town of Annah, a third IS holdout neighboring those two towns, late September.

Troops also managed to recapture Mosul, the group’s former capital, and the neighboring town of Tal Afar early July and late August.

5 Bad Guys die near Qaim

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants have killed a family as they tried to escape in western Anbar, a security source was quoted saying on Thursday.

“IS militants killed in the evening a family which tried escaping in the desert of Qaim,” the source told Alghad Press.

The militant group, according to the source, “previously threatened people against escaping or they would be killed along with their families.”

In related news, five militants were killed, while an explosive workshop was destroyed in an airstrike in Qaim.

“U.S.-led Coalition jets pounded IS locations in Qaim,” the source said. “The shelling left five IS militants, including a security chief, and an explosive workshop destroyed.”

3 ISIS suicide bombers die in Ramadi

ِAnbar (IraqiNews.com) Three Islamic State militants were killed in confrontations, south of Ramadi, Anbar Operations Command announced.

“Security services managed to kill three IS suicide attackers after confrontations in al-Tash region, south of Ramadi,” a source from the command told AlSumaria News on Thursday.

“Troops currently controls the whole region after repulsing the infiltration attempt,” the source, who preferred anonymity, said.

Ramadi was recaptured by government and tribal forces from IS in December 2015, however, several occasional attacks by the group have occurred since then.

Maj. Gen. Hadi Rezeij, Anbar police chief, said on Sunday fifty IS militants were killed as security thwarted an attack to target regions in south and west of Ramadi

The militant group invaded, late September, al-Tash and the 5th Kilometer regions, south and west of Ramadi. The militants reportedly took over al-Tash and al-Jamea (university) areas after invading them with 20 pickup trucks, however, troops were able to repulse the attack. 40 IS militants were killed, while three injured others were wounded, Brig. Gen. Saad Maan, spokesperson of Baghdad Operations said in a press conference.

Iraqi army announced the total recapture of the town of Annah, hours after recapturing neighboring Rayhana area, earlier in September. Troops also liberated Akashat region, between Rutba town, on borders with Jordan, and Qaim, on borders with Syria.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

1 Iraqi militiaman dies in gunfight at check point

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One tribal fighter was killed and two others were wounded on Thursday when unidentified gunmen attacked their checkpoint south of Baghdad, according to security sources.

Almaalomah website quoted the sources saying that individuals with assault rifles attacked a checkpoint belonging to the Tribal Mobilization (pro-government Sunni paramilitary forces), and killing one and wounding two.

A monthly count by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), which excludes security members deaths, said 196 civilians were killed, while 381 others were wounded due to violence and armed conflicts during the month of September. The fatalities included 10 foreign nationals. Baghdad was the most affected province with 37 deaths and 157 injuries.

The Iraqi capital has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary troops and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake Islamic State-occupied areas in 2016.

While most of of the explosions and attacks went without a claim of responsibility, Islamic State has claimed several incidents.

Some security observers believe that even after Islamic State’s main havens across Iraqi provinces are conquered, the group may still constitute a security threat through sleeper cells and lone wolf attacks. The Iraqi government is currently battling the group out of its last havens in Kirkuk and Anbar.

1 dead in bombing attack in al-Dawanem region

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A civilian was killed and three others were wounded in a bomb blast south of Baghdad, a police source said on Thursday.

“A bomb placed near stores in al-Dawanem region, south Baghdad, went off leaving a civilian killed and three others wounded,” the source said.

“Security troops cordoned off the blast spot. The injured were taken to hospital, while the victim’s body was taken to forensic medicine department,” he added.

Iraqi premier claims victory against Islamic State in Hawija
[DPA-INTERNATIONAL] Iraq has "liberated" Hawija, Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bad boys’ last stronghold in the northern part of the country, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed on Thursday.

"I announce to you today ... the liberation of the city of Hawija today at the hands of the Iraqi forces," al-Abadi said in Gay Paree after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

"This victory is not just a victory for the Iraqis, but for the whole world," al-Abadi added.

His remarks came shortly after an Iraqi commander said that forces had recaptured the centre of Hawija from Islamic State.

Hawija, in the oil-rich province of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
fell to the radical group in mid-2014.

Commander of the Hawija operation, Lieutenant General Abdul-Amir Yarallah, said earlier the centre of the town had been "completely liberated" from bad boys.

"The units are continuing progress," he added in a statement without details.

Despite the statements, government forces, backed by Shiite militias, are now fighting to retake the district of Riyad, the last part of Hawija under Islamic State.

The Iraqi military says that seizing Riyad is likely to be completed in the next few hours.

Fighters from the pro-government Shiite militia, the Popular Mobilization, have pushed around 5 kilometres inside Riyad, sources in the group said.

The Popular Mobilization has played a major role in Iraq’s campaign against Islamic State.

On September 21, al-Abadi announced the beginning of a major offensive to retake Hawija.

Southeast Asia
Report: 8 terrorists surrender with 9 hostages in Marawi
[Inquirer] Eight gunmen believed to be Maute militants emerged from the battle zone in Marawi and surrendered to the military on Wednesday. The gunmen also turned over nine hostages to the military, according to Zia Alonto Adiong, spokesman for the Lanao del Sur crisis management committee. Adiong gave no more details, but he said the development was “clear evidence we are approaching the end of the war.”

Earlier reports said 17 hostages emerged from the battle zone as the military hit Maute positions with airstrikes. But the Joint Task Force Ranao could not confirm those reports. Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of the task force, said he could confirm only the surrender of three Maute gunmen and the rescue of five hostages over two weeks ago and the rescue of Catholic priest Teresito Soganub before that.

Brawner also said he could also confirm the rescue of 1,733 hostages and civilians since May 23, when Maute and Abu Sayyaf rebels rampaged across Marawi. More than 800 people have died in the fighting, including 155 government troops, as of Monday.

Brawner said the military continued to persuade the remaining terrorists in the city to surrender. He said, "We are also trying to convince them to release the hostages and to surrender so that the crisis here will be over, but if they don’t want to surrender and continue fighting, our troops will finish them."

Brawner said it was likely the terrorists would eventually use the hostages as human shields to protect themselves as they escaped from Marawi. Going by information from escaped or rescued hostages, the military said 46 hostages, some of them children, remained in the hands of the terrorists.

Russian subs hit terrorist targets with ‘Kalibr’ cruise missiles in Syria
[RT] Russian submarines have fired Kalibr cruise missiles from the Mediterranean hitting terrorist targets in Syria, the Defense Ministry said. The strikes were to support Syrian troops waging ground offensive in Deir-ez-Zor province.

The submarines ’Veliky Novgorod’ and ’Kolpino’ launched 10 missiles on Thursday when patrolling the Mediterranean, ministry front man General Igor Konashenkov told news hounds.

The front man said the submarines fired the missiles while submerged.

Before the missile strikes, Russian surveillance detected Islamic State

(IS, formerly ISIS/ISIS) targets in Deir-ez-Zor province, including command centers, large ammunition depots and hangars housing terrorists' armored vehicles, the ministry added.

"To hit these targets, Velikiy Novgorod and Kolpino submarines of the Black Sea Fleet have performed two multiple launches of Kalibr cruise missiles from the Mediterranean," the front man said.

2 more mass graves found in Hawija

Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi paramilitary forces have run into two more mass graves as Iraq declared the recapture of Islamic State stronghold Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk.

The Popular Mobilization Forces’ media said Thursday the two mass graves were wounded in southwestern Hawija, adding that the relics belonged to both security members and civilians including women and children.

PMFs have recently run into three mass graves of security members executed by Islamic State militants at the villages of Abu Sakhra and al-Therban, also southwest of Hawija, as operations proceeded to clear the town.

Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said earlier on Thursday its forces seized back Hawija after three years of occupation by Islamic State.
