Afghanistan
A 'Remarkable' Afghan Ceasfire
[Institute For the Study of War] Key Takeaway: The U.S. and Afghanistan have an opportunity to advance their strategic goal of negotiating an acceptable settlement with the Taliban, but not all Taliban members are reconcilable. The Taliban faces a potential rift between its leadership and rank-and-file militants in Afghanistan that threatens the Taliban’s cohesion. Large numbers of rank-and-file militants expressed their support for peace during unprecedented joint celebrations alongside Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) during a nationwide ceasefire for Eid al-Fitr on June 15 - 17. The ceasefire’s events exposed rifts amongst Taliban leadership concerning reconciliation. The U.S. and the Government of Afghanistan could exploit these apparent rifts in order to advance their strategic goal of a negotiated settlement with the Taliban. The new momentum towards peace could nonetheless generate additional pressure for the withdrawal of the U.S. from Afghanistan amidst the scheduled 2018 Afghan Parliamentary Elections. ISIS - Wilayat Khorasan could also exploit these rifts in to bolster its recruitment of hardline Taliban militants and expand its operations in Afghanistan.

British special forces soldier killed six Taliban in pitch-black, Viet Cong-style tunnel fight
[Times] Reports have surfaced of a 29-year-old British SAS sergeant’s fight against fleeing Taliban terrorists in an underground cave complex in Afghanistan in January.

The Daily Star Sunday reported that the soldier from central England managed to shoot three terrorists and kill another three with a claw hammer while in near complete darkness in a series of underground tunnels less than 2 feet wide and 4 feet high.

The soldier was part of a joint British and Afghan special forces operation launched against a Taliban base in northern Afghanistan, the Daily Star reported.

No Casualties As Car Bomb Goes Off In Mogadishu
[RADIOSHABELLE] A car laden with explosives went off on Saturday night near the statue of Sayidka in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, but no casualties were reported.

Confirming the incident to Radio Shabelle, Mohammed Abdi, a witness said the bomb went kaboom! in the area shortly after the driver got off the car.

"A Somali security force officer has escaped unhurt from an IED fitted into his private car which went off at Sayidka vicinity. No casualties have been reported so far" said Abdi.

No group claimed the responsibility of the attack but al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
had been carrying out attacks against Somali government and AU troops in Somalia.

Nine Arrested In Attack On Ethiopian PM Rally; 165 Injured
[RADIOSHABELLE] At least one person was killed and 165 injured when an kaboom rocked a rally in Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, the Æthiopian capital, as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed completed his address.

"Building an independent nation is not the same as building a free society. What good is a free country, if we don’t enjoy freedom? If we are not free from fear?" Abiy asked, just moments before the blast.

Authorities in Æthiopia say they are treating the incident as an liquidation attempt, and have placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
nine people in connection with it, according to the Addis Standard. Among them is Girma Kassa, the deputy police commissioner for the city, who was fired earlier in the day.

Abiy later visited attack victims in the hospital, praising their courage and saying they represent the true spirit of love, forgiveness and togetherness that were major themes of his speech. There were 54 people admitted for treatment, nine of them at death's door, according to the Æthiopian health minister. Some estimates put the unconfirmed corpse count at four.

The attack was swiftly condemned by the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
, which is headquartered in Addis Ababa.

"The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has learned with shock and dismay of the attack that took place today during a peaceful rally in Addis Ababa in support of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s reform agenda," the AU statement said. "He strongly condemns this cowardly attack against civilians at a peaceful rally under the banner of peace and reconciliation."

African leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and President Mohammed Farmaajo of Somalia, also expressed their condolences.

The Houthi forces fired a ballistic missile towards the Saudi Ministry of Defense’s data center, which is located in Riyadh city.

Prior to this announcement, locals in Riyadh reported loud blasts inside the city; this would later be confirmed to be a Houthi missile attack.

This latest attack by the Houthi forces comes just hours after the Saudi-led Coalition heavily bombarded the historical Yemeni city of Sa’ada in the northern part of the country.

6 arrested in Turkey for 'insulting Erdogan on social media' as country goes to polls
[DAWN] At least six people were tossed in the slammer

by Ottoman Turkish authorities late on Saturday night for allegedly insulting President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

on social media ahead of a campaign rally by his main opponent in Sunday's high-stakes presidential and parliamentary election.

State-run Anadolu news agency said the six were detained after videos posted on social media reportedly showed them shouting expletives against Erdogan. The news agency said they were later charged with "insulting state elders".

The agency said police were searching for other suspects.

Insulting the president is a crime punishable by up to four years in prison. Erdogan has filed close to 2,000 lawsuits against people, including school children, for insulting him.

As a goodwill gesture, he dropped the cases following a failed military coup in 2016. But many more cases have been filed since then.

Iraq
Paramilitaries say JOC was aware of U.S.airstrikes against forces on Iraqi-Syrian borders
Try as I might, I am still confused as to what did or did not happen.
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The pro-government paramilitary troops have announced the outcome of the Arclight airstrikes that targeted the forces on Iraqi-Syrian borders, earlier this month.

In a presser held on Sunday, abu Montather al-Husseini, head of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) operations, said the outcome of preliminary investigations on the U.S. shelling against the troops showed that missiles were fired, based on U.S. plans, from a distance of 200 meters to strike one of our pivotal locations in Qaim, on borders between Iraq and Syria.

Husseini added that both the Joint Operations Command and the commander of Jazira and Badiya Operations, Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Mohammadi, knew that our troops were deployed there.

Mohammadi, according to Husseini, "informed the Joint Operations Command by mistake that the troops were deployed 1500 kilometers away from the borders, after one of the commanders told him the information mistakenly. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
he did not correct it."

The targeted region "is one of the important strategic region on the Iraqi-Syrian borders," he said indicating its importance to defend Qaim aw well. "The crime is a war crime. We urge the government to defend rights of those deaders."

Last week, PMFs said up to 34 fighters of its members were killed and maimed after the U.S.-led international coalition targeted a military outpost in the Syrian city of al-Bu Kamal.

Meanwhile,
...back at the laboratory, Igor and Oleg were discussing what the quickest way might be to deal with the monster...
abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy chief of PMFs, described the statement issued by JOC, issued after the airstrikes as ’hasty’, saying that it attributed information to him that he did not say.

The statement, according to Muhandis, "was hasty when it announced that the troops targeted on Iraqi-Syrian borders were outside the Iraqi lands and that they were not linked to al-hashd al-Shaabi."

Killing Islamic State senior member in coalition airstrike separates Baghdadi from west of Iraq: Expert
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) An expert on the myrmidon groups affairs has considered the Arclight airstrikes by the international coalition that killed Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. leader Abdullah al-Shemari as a devastating blow to the group.

In remarks to the Russian Sputnik news agency, Omar Badr Eddin, said Shemari is the leader of Jazira region. Losing him at such critical time of the group’s battle against the police and army in Iraq means difficulty to make up for him, which could create confusion among the group.

The group’s supreme leader, abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, whom is expected by many to be in one of the African countries, will not be able to communicate with an important part of the group in west of Iraq, where Shemari was leading the terrorist operations there, especially that he was killed, along with other leaders, the expert added.

The Iraqi Joint Operations Command, according to Badr Eddin, is currently making achievements through killing number of leaders and fighters in sporadic operations. He stressed necessity to resume those operations, saying that killing even one murderous Moslem is a big loss to the group, as one member is now tasked with huge missions.

On Saturday, the Security Media Center said the U.S.-led Coalition managed to kill Shemari in an airstrike in Anbar.

Iraq denies reports about shelling of U.S. Embassy in Baghdad
Good to know.
Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – Iraqi authorities denied on Sunday that the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad came under a mortar attack by al-Hashd al-Shaabi militias in response to last week’s Arclight airstrikes on Iraqi-Syrian borders, which left scores of the pro-Iran fighters dead and injured.

Ghaleb al-Zamali, a member of Baghdad provincial council’s security committee, told Basnews website that "reports about the shelling of the U.S. Embassy in the Green Zone, Baghdad, are inaccurate. No bombardments were reported against the the U.S. Embassy or elsewhere."

Al-Zamali accused some parties "of attempting to spread rumors for political purposes," stressing that the situation in Baghdad is stable and there is no security tension.

in Salahuddin province, intelligence sources said on Sunday.

IDF: Patriot missile fired at incoming UAV from Syria, which retreats
[IsraelTimes] Residents post pictures showing white trail left behind by anti-aircraft missile; the military says the air defense system didn't hit the UAV, which approached Israeli territory

The Israel Defense Forces launched a Patriot interceptor missile at a drone that was heading toward Israeli airspace from Syria, prompting the incoming unmanned aerial vehicle to beat a retreat, the army said.

"As a result, the aircraft fled from the border. No interception was reported," the army said in a statement.

The drone was being used as part of the Syrian military’s activities in the Quneitra region, near the Israeli Golan Heights, a commander in the coalition supporting Syrian dictator Bashir al-Assad later told the Rooters news service.

The IDF did not immediately identify the operator of the drone.

The military said its systems spotted the incoming aircraft and fired at it before the UAV reached the border.

"The IDF will not allow a violation of the aerial illusory sovereignty of the State of Israel and will take action against any attempt to harm its citizens," the army said.

Residents of northern Israel quickly began sharing photographs and videos showing the white trail left behind, apparently by the Patriot launch.

In recent days, fighting has intensified near Israel’s border with Syria, as dictator Bashir al-Assad’s forces, aided by the Russian military, move in on one of the last remaining areas of rebel-controlled territory in the country.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor on Sunday said that at least 23 people, including women and kiddies, had been killed by pro-regime forces in the latest round of violence. Fifteen pro-Assad fighters were also reportedly killed by Syrian rebels.

On Sunday, intensive festivities were reported near the southern Syria city of Daraa, with dozens of Arclight airstrikes that local activists said were carried out by the Russian air force.

Jerusalem and Moscow maintain close ties in order to prevent accidental festivities and conflicts between their militaries.

Patriot is mid to high attitude intercept. Not intended or designed for low attitude.

Now the UAV may have been spoofing, through transmission or have someone in the same radar envelope behind it.

3 Gazans said injured as IDF conducts strikes against fire balloon launchers
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian media reports three attacks by Israeli drones in at least two locations in the coastal enclave

Israeli drones carried out three Arclight airstrikes on targets in the Gazoo Strip on Sunday, according to Paleostinian media, including one that reportedly injured three people, in response to multiple airborne arson attacks from the enclave directed against southern Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that it had launched two airstrikes, but would not immediately comment on the reports of one.

Around 7 p.m., the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,-run Gazoo health ministry reported that three people had been injured in an IDF strike east of Gazoo City’s Zeitoun neighborhood. The extent of the men’s injuries was not immediately known.

According to the IDF, the men had been preparing to launch airborne incendiary and bombs into southern Israel.

The military said the target of the strike was a cart being used by the cell.

It was not immediately clear if the men had been deliberately injured. In the past, the IDF had generally avoided wounding Paleostinians in its airstrikes against kite- and balloon launchers, instead firing warning shots or targeting empty vehicles.

The IDF refused to comment on the injuries, saying only that it was aware of the reports.

It was the third reported Israeli strike against a target in the Gazoo Strip of the day.

The first, which was conducted in the early afternoon, destroyed a cycle of violence that was being used by a group of Paleostinians who had launched incendiary balloons into southern Israel.

"Using an aircraft, the IDF attacked a vehicle that was being used by a cell that had launched incendiary balloons in the southern Gazoo Strip," the army said in a statement.

The motorbike that was hit in the first airstrike did not appear to have been in used at the time. The target of the second airstrike, which took place a short time later, was an observation post near the security fence, according to Paleostinian media reports.

According to the Hamas-affiliated Shehab news outlet, those two dronezaps occurred outside the Bureij refugee camp.

Throughout the day, approximately 30 fires ‐ of varying sizes ‐ were reported in the area around the Gazoo Strip, apparently sparked by incendiary kites and balloons.

Palestinians open fire on settlement south of Jerusalem – IDF
[IsraelTimes] No injuries or damage as shots fired from car at entrance to Kibbutz Migdal Oz; army closes entrance to nearby Paleostinian village in search for perpetrators

Gunshots were fired from a car with Paleostinian license plates near the West Bank settlement of Kibbutz Migdal Oz on Sunday night in what the Israel Defense Forces called an attempted terror attack.

The army said there were no injuries, and the shooting caused no damage.

The IDF launched a search for the perpetrator, who sped away after the shooting. As part of the manhunt, the army set up roadblocks at the entrance to the nearby Paleostinian village of Beit Fajjar, some eight kilometers (five miles) south of Bethlehem.

"IDF troops are blocking exits from the village of Beit Fajjar as part of the search efforts after the terrorist. Exit permits will be granted in accordance with decisions by security forces," the army said.

"In addition, troops are continuing to search the area," the military added.

According to the IDF, the shooting took place near the southern entrance of Migdal Oz.

The kibbutz abuts Efrat in the Etzion Bloc, south of Bethlehem.

Earlier this month, Israeli security forces closed down a weapons manufacturing workshop in Beit Fajjar.

IDF forces confiscated a lathe from the facility, which was believed to be involved in producing makeshift firearms that could be delivered to terror groups.

Seven cops killed in 'misencounter' with Philippine army
[Rappler] Seven policemen were killed and 6 were injured in what was called a "misencounter" with the Philippine military in Villareal, Samar, on Monday morning.

Provincial police, however, said that what happened in Barangay Santa Rosa was an “ambush,” perpetrated by members of the Army’s 87th Infantry Battalion. The police said they were conducting “minor combat operations” in the area.

Meanwhile, military sources said the army had a “big operation,” and the police team went into the area without coordination. The team was composed of elements of the Eastern Visayas police deployed to augment the Samar Provincial Police Office.

This is a developing story.

Thai police seize 41 pipe bombs smuggled in from Malaysia
[The Nation] 41 pipe bombs intercepted on Thursday by police in Narathiwat province, on the Thai side of the Malaysian border, were intended for an attack on security officers. Military spokesman Manas Siksamat the bombs were made in Malaysia.

Zanuzi Yatae was arrested on Thursday after his pickup truck was stopped in Tambon Kosit in Tak Bai district. He is a resident of Tambon Tanyongmas in Narathiwat’s Rangae district, said Manas.

Another suspect, Abdulasi Sama, a resident of Tak Bai, fled on foot along a border canal and was later picked up by a motorcyclist. Manas said police learned the identity of the second suspect from a passport found in a bag that fell while he was fleeing.

Bomb disposal experts who checked the pipe bombs said they could have been used as grenades or set to be detonated by timing devices. Police believe the bombs were assembled in Malaysia because the PVC pipes used are not available in Thailand.

Zanuzi reportedly told police that he and the second suspect drove their pickup to the border at Ban Pado village in Tambon Na Nak in Tak Bai and four militants on two motorcycles arrived with the bombs. They wrapped the bombs in thick clothes to prevent them from accidental discharge and drove their pickup to Narathiwat’s Yingor district but were nabbed by highway police on the way.

Kurdish militia declares state of emergency in Syria’s Raqqa after ISIS attack
[ALMASDARNEWS] The US-backed Syrian rebel group controlling the northern Syrian city of Raqqa has declared the state of emergency and a full curfew for a week over suspicions of potential attacks by the defeated Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
The Syrian Democratic Forces issued an official statement saying that ’terrorist elements’ might have made it into Raqqa to carry out terror attacks.

According to the statement, SDF security units have foiled two attempts by terror groups to infiltrate the city. Checkpoints have been set up citywide to prevent such attempts and guarantee maximum safety.

The recent security procedures come two days after the Islamic State launched its first attack in Raqqa since the terror group was forced to leave its de-facto capital in October 2017.

ISIS’ media wing said that several Kurdish fighters were killed and injured when an IED went kaboom! in two vehicles inside Raqqa. The terror organization vowed more long-wolf attacks against the Kurdish militia.
The Times of Israel adds:
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group says 5,000 SDF fighters had been deployed in Raqa and parts of the surrounding province for a huge security operation.

Jihadist attempt to enter besieged Shiite towns in Idlib ends in disaster
[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist rebels once again attempted to enter the besieged Shiite towns of al-Fou’aa and Kafraya, despite the ongoing ceasefire in the Idlib Governorate.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
began their assault by storming the town of Kafraya from their positions at the Barouma Farms axis.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
the jihadist rebels were reportedly spotted by a Syrian Army reconnaissance drone prior to launching their attack on Sunday morning.

According to a members of the National Defense Forces (NDF), once the jihadist attempted to infiltrate into Kafraya, their troops laid well-executed ambush that kill several members of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

The NDF said they lost two military personnel during the jihadist attack, but they managed to fully repel Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s infiltration attempt.

Syrian Army liberates new Iraqi border region after major advance
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) scored a massive advance in southeast Syria on Sunday, liberating several areas from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (ISIS) forces.

Backed by heavy Arclight airstrikes from their air force, the Syrian military continued their major operation to clear the western countryside of Albukamal city on Sunday morning.

Not long after resuming the attack, the Syrian Arab Army managed to liberate several areas, including a new Iraqi border region that was under the control of the Islamic State.

According to a military source in Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Arab Army liberated Post 400 at the Iraqi border, following a short battle with the Islamic State terrorists.

The source added that the Syrian Army’s operation covered over 1,800 square kilometers of territory, most of which was already under their control.

Due to the Islamic State’s abundance of sleeper cells in the region, the Syrian military launched this operation to finally clear out these terrorist hideouts and restore security to the area.

A separate military source told al-Masdar on Sunday evening that the Syrian Army has eliminated 90 percent of the believed Islamic State combatants in this area.

The source added that the Islamic State should not be able to launch anymore big attacks on the western part of Albukamal because their terrorist network has been significantly reduced.

Pro-Assad troops take over Golan UN post in demilitarized area on Israeli border
[IsraelTimes] IDF hints it may act to remove soldiers by force, noting the new position marks a violation of the post-1973 separation of forces agreement

Forces loyal to the regime of Syrian strongman Bashir al-Assad took control of an abandoned UN post in the no-man’s land between the Israeli and Syrian areas of the Golan Heights, Israel’s Kan public broadcaster reported on Sunday.

The post, abandoned by United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) troops on the Golan, is meant to be free of both Israeli and Syrian troops, according to the cessation of hostilities agreement between the two countries that followed the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

According to the report, UNDOF has identified ongoing infrastructure work at the site.

The IDF said in a statement that it was "aware of what is taking place, and views [the takeover of the site and] the infrastructure work at the post as a serious and flagrant violation of the separation-of-forces agreement."

The IDF statement suggested Israel might act to remove the forces from the post by force. Officials told Kan that Israel "sees UNDOF as responsible for tracking and acting against military forces in the separation zone, and is determined to prevent military entrenchment in that area."

The televised Kan report showed footage of the post.

The report came just hours after an Israeli Patriot missile was fired at a drone that approached from Syria toward Israel’s airspace. Israeli officials believe the drone belonged to regime forces.

According to Hebrew-language reports, the IDF is bracing for an uptick in fighting in Syrian areas adjacent to the Israeli border, and expects incidents of stray fire to enter Israeli territory.

As fighting between the main factions in the Syrian civil war threatened to overwhelm UNDOF positions, the UN troops left the demilitarized buffer zone for Israel in 2014.
