Fighting between Somalia's al Shabaab and clan militias leave 17 dead
[AlAhram] At least 17 people have been killed in fighting between gunnies from Somalia's al-Shabaab

, residents and the group told Rooters on Thursday.

Somali state-run Radio Muqdisho reported on its website on Thursday that the fighting in the Haradheere area, which started on Wednesday, had been triggered by alleged al-Shabaab conscription of teenagers into their ranks.

Al-Shabaab has controlled the port district for years but has repeatedly clashed with local clan militias over a range of disputes.

"Al-Shabaab asked for teenagers to be recruited," the radio reported. A tax called zakat being imposed by al-Shabaab had also stoked anger among the residents and militias, it added.

Residents in the area told Rooters a total of nine militia members and al-Shabaab fighters had been killed in the fighting.

"We attacked al-Shabaab and ... then, al-Shabaab got many gunnies as reinforcement from various regions. We fought and fought till we ran out of bullets," a local elder, Farah Ahmed, told Rooters by phone from the Haradheere area on Thursday.

Somalia has been convulsed by lawlessness and violence since 1991 when dictator Mohammed Siad Barre was toppled.

Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabaab’s military operations front man told Rooters they had fought the militias because they were armed by neighbouring Æthiopia. They had killed 15 members of the militias, he said.

"Æthiopia wants Hobyo port and so it is using clan militias to capture the road to Hobyo port town," he said.

Hobyo port is about 260 kilometers northeast of Haradheere. Musab said al-Shabaab had taken all weapons from the militias during the attack.

Boys forced to rape their mothers during Congo war: UN report
[NYP] Boys in the Congo were forced to rape their mothers while blood-drinking soldiers feasted on the flesh of dying victims, a nightmarish new report claims.

Rebels and government troops in the Kasai region of the African country have committed sickening atrocities including mass rape and cannibalism, UN human rights experts claim.

In one horrific massacre, 186 men and young boys from a single village had their heads chopped off, the report says.

The team investigating the conflict in the Kasai region told the United Nations Human Rights Council last week that they suspected all sides were guilty of war crimes and offenses against humanity.

Their detailed, 126-page report cataloged gruesome attacks committed in the conflict, which erupted in late 2016, involving the Kamuina Nsapu and Bana Mura militias and Congo’s armed forces, the FARDC.

Twelve Arrested in Riots over Police Killing of French Youth
[AnNahar] Twelve people were jugged
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
after a second night of rioting in the western city of Nantes triggered by the deadly shooting of a young man during a stop-and-search operation by police.

The killing of the 22-year-old, identified by local media as Aboubakar F., risks inflaming simmering tensions in deprived urban areas in La Belle France where residents frequently complain of police brutality.

Rioters set fire to several dozen cars for a second night running Wednesday and fought pitched battles with the police in the low-income district of Breil where Tuesday's shooting took place and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Several public buildings, including a cop shoppe, were damaged and a dozen shops were torched, despite calls by the victim's family for calm.

Eleven people were arrested in Breil and one person was arrested in the Gay Paree suburb of Garges-les-Gonesse where Aboubakar F. grew up.

The victim was under surveillance as part of a drug-trafficking investigation when he was stopped by police while driving at around 8.30 pm.

The police said he was not carrying ID and that they attempted to arrest him.

Nantes prosecutor Pierre Sennes said that the driver then "apparently tried to escape the search by quickly reversing."

Police sources said he reversed into one of the officers, prompting his partner to open fire -- but a witness said the car was at a halt when the driver was hit in the neck by a single bullet.

A police oversight body is investigating the killing.

The driver had been wanted by police in Creteil, near Gay Paree, for robbery and other offences.

- Contradictory accounts -
A woman who filmed the incident, who wished to remain anonymous, said "there were no police behind the car, he didn't hit anyone. There was only the one gunshot."

French police have a long history of strained relations with youths in poor suburbs with large immigration populations, while officers frequently complain about being targeted.

In January, the government vowed a crackdown on urban violence after a shocking video emerged of a policewoman being beaten by a crowd in the Gay Paree suburbs on New Year's Eve.

A parliamentary report released Tuesday showed high suicide rates within the police and warned about widespread low morale in the force.

Breil, the Nantes neighbourhood where Tuesday's shooting occurred, is a socially mixed district home to a large housing estate with a history of gang violence.

#4  I looked up Nantes in Rantburg’s archives, and discovered it was the home of the leader of Forsane Alizza (Knights of Pride in Arabic). They claimed to be a soft jihad organization which aimed by public spectacle to fight Islamophobia by reminding the kufrs of France of their approaching dhimmitude in the future French caliphate. First noticed by the public when they invaded a Limoges McDonalds to shout antisemitic slogans in 2010, they subsequently got in the habit of leading prayer services in the streets, collecting AK-47s and similar toys, playing paintball in the forests by way of training, and formulating plans for mass terror attacks on identified Jewish businesses. The interior ministry banned them in 2012 for encouraging their fellow citizens to join the jihad in Afghanistan, and in 2015 jailed emir Mohammed Achamlane and 13 of his henchmen for mopery and dopery on the spaceways.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Army captures last town before Daraa city
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has just captured the last town east of Daraa city after a fierce battle with the Free Syrian Army’s Southern Front Brigades.

Backed by heavy airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army was able to overpower the rebel forces at the town of Al-Naimah, forcing the latter to fall back to the eastern district of Daraa.

This fresh advance by the Syrian Army comes just 18 hours after their troops captured the neighboring town of Saida from the Free Syrian Army and their allies.

With Al-Naimah captured, the Syrian Army will now move towards the eastern part of the provincial capital, as the 4th Division inside the city pushes south towards the Daraa Al-Balad District.

The Syrian Army will not only launch this new offensive on the provincial capital, but they will also work to clear the remaining towns around Daraa city.

Syrian government troops recapture strategic Saida town in southeastern Dara’a
[PRESSTV] Syrian army soldiers have managed to establish full control over a strategic town in the country’s southwestern province of Dara’a, as they are engaged in counter-terrorism operations to put an ultimate end to the presence of foreign-backed Takfiri militants in the eastern and southeastern sectors of the province.

On Thursday, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported that government forces advanced towards the Dara'a al-Balad residential area of Dara’a, located about 13 kilometers north of the border with Jordan, where militants affiliated to the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, Takfiri terror group are positioned.

The operation inflicted heavy losses on militant ranks. A number of rocket launch pads belonging to Takfiri terrorists were destroyed in the process as well.

Syrian army soldiers then entirely recaptured Saida, situated some 10 kilometers east of Dara’a, after fierce clashes with militants and driving the Takfiris out of a Syrian Air Defense Force base southeast of the town.

A number of terrorists were killed and wounded in the gun battle, while several others fled towards the nearby town of al-Taiba.

Syrian bomb disposal units are now combing the liberated area for hidden ordnance and explosive devices, which terrorists have planted there to slow down the advance of army forces.

One killed, 22 others injured in bomb blast among SDF supporters, north of Syria
Minbaj (IraqiNews.com) At least 23 people were killed and injured on Thursday as a blast took place in north of Syria among protesting supporters of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Speaking to BasNews, local sources from Minbaj said a blast occurred in al-Hayya town in the countryside of the city as citizens were gathering to protest against Ottoman Turkish forces, which left casualties.

The blast, according to the sources, resulted from a landmine planted near a school, leaving a civilian killed and 22 others injured.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy's udder had begun to ache...
two powerful blasts, believed to have resulted from two booby-trapped cars, occurred in Jarabulus city, controlled by the pro-Ottoman Turkish factions Euphrates Shield.

On Wednesday, U.S. forces demarcated the borders between regions under the control of Minbaj military council, an ally of SDF and Euphrates Shield, between Jarabulus and Minbaj.

600 airstrikes by Russian, Syrian jets against Daraa: Observatory
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Syrian forces and Russian allies have carried out hundreds of Arclight airstrikes against towns in Daraa province, south of Syrian, in an unprecedented escalation since beginning of attacks against the region more than two weeks ago.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said more than 600 airstrikes were carried out since Wednesday night.

"The Russian and Syrian jets are turning the region into hell," the observatory said on Thursday, indicating "hysterical shelling against the countryside of Daraa in an attempt to make the factions surrender after they rejected the Russian proposal on ceasing the battles during the recent round of talks on Wednesday."

The Syrian opposition had been in talks with Russian since Saturday in efforts to reach an agreement to end the battles, however, no agreement was reached.

The first round of talks ended on Saturday as the opposition delegation withdrew saying the conditions set by the Russians are almost humiliating surrender.

Several towns, controlled by the opposition in the southwest, striked agreements, separately from the main opposition factions, with the government in light of progress by the army and the airstrikes.

The United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
had said that fighting in the southwest of Syria caused 270,000 persons to flee their houses.
