He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. A military official says at least 21 people were kidnapped from the towns of al-Fuqaha and Tazerbu last month; two of them managed to flee and reported the locations of the others. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief media.

He says IS Lions of Islam were holding the remaining 19 people in containers on farmland and that festivities killed a soldier.

Boko Haram raids military posts in northeast Nigeria
[France24] Boko Haram jihadists have raided at least three military posts and overpowered troops in the latest attacks in northeast Nigeria, sources said Wednesday.

Fighters from the IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)
...the original Boko Haram, now led by Abu Musab al-Barnawi, the other factions being the ISIS-rejected Abubakar Shekau’s faction and the al-Qaeda-loyal Ansaru faction...
overran the posts in Borno state on Tuesday, military and militia sources said.

The Boko Haram faction has in recent months intensified attacks on military targets in Borno and Yobe states, raiding bases and killing dozens of troops.

“They first dislodged soldiers at a checkpoint in Kimba in Biu... and then took over another post at Sabon Gari, five kilometres (three miles) away,” said one military officer of the latest attacks.

The jihadists launched another attack on a base in nearby Wajirko, according to a militiaman in the area.

On Monday, the jihadists had overwhelmed troops in Buni Gari village in neighbouring Yobe state, leading to “some losses”, an army officer said.

“Troops were outgunned and forced to retreat after heavy fighting with the terrorists,” the military source said.

ISWAP gunmen apparently attacked the village in reprisals over the killing of fellow jihadists in the village last month. Residents alerted soldiers in a nearby military base as they arrived in trucks.

...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
, the government said on Wednesday, echoing a rise in inter-communal conflicts in neighbouring Mali.

Armed men on cycle of violences descended on the village of Yirgou in Barsalogo district after nightfall on Monday, killing six people, including the village chief, government front man Jean Paul Badoun told Rooters news agency.

The following day, Yirgou villagers - whom largely belong to the Mossi ethnic group - attacked a nearby camp of Fulani nomadic herders, killing seven people in an apparent retaliation, said Badoun. Yirgou residents blamed the herders for sheltering the men who attacked them the day before.

Abdoulaye Pafadnam, mayor of Barsalogo district, said the victims were buried at nightfall on Tuesday, adding that the corpse count may be higher than 13.

"A precarious calm has returned to the village, thanks to the presence of defence and security reinforcements," said Pafadnam.

French police nab 14 migrants at Channel port harbour
Yes, but what did they do with them afterward? The common sense response would be to send them back to their home country post haste, but absolutely nobody over there seems to be doing that.
[AlAhram] French police caught 14 migrants colonists trying to steal a fishing trawler in the Channel port of Boulogne, a local prosecutor said Tuesday.

It was the latest in a string of incidents in which migrants colonists have tried to use French vessels to attempt the Channel crossing to England.

"Those seeking to help them on their way were busy breaking into the trawler" to let them aboard when harbour authorities called police, Pascal Marconville told AFP.

The migrants colonists, including a mother and her two children, said they came from Iraq.

Police were still looking for two people they suspected of being the people smugglers involved in the incident, Marconville added.

In mid-November, a fishing vessel stolen from the harbour was intercepted with migrants colonists aboard off the southern English coast.

A second stolen vessel was stopped with 16 migrants colonists aboard on December 23 just after making it out to sea from Boulogne harbour.

Britannia and La Belle France have agreed to boost cooperation to try to stop the increase in numbers, which began in October, the Britannia's Home Office said Sunday.

They plan to increase Channel patrols and increase awareness of the dangers of trying to cross what is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

In December, around 230 people have tried to make the 21-mile (33-kilometre) journey from La Belle France to Britannia, according to Britannia's interior minister Sajid Javid.

French or British vessels have rescued about 100 migrants colonists in the Channel since December 23.

British authorities found 43 people in English waters on Christmas Day and December 26.

On Thursday, British border officials found 23 Iranians in three locations in Kent on England's southeast coast, hours after French maritime authorities intercepted 11 migrants colonists in a small boat near Sangatte.

And on Sunday, authorities intercepted six Iranians near Kingsdown beach in Dover.

Britannia said Monday it would deploy two border patrol ships in the Channel in response to the increase in migrants colonists crossing from La Belle France in dinghies.

[DW] Berlin-based Sea-Watch said conditions on the boats had become dangerous, with migrants colonists suffering from severe sea-sickness and post-traumatic stress disorder. The vessels were denied access to ports in Malta and Italia.

Turkey’s planned invasion impeded by new jihadist offensive in Aleppo
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Ottoman Turkish military’s planned offensive in northern Syria has been obstructed by the massive attack waged by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has been monitoring closely the ongoing battle between Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front.

The source said that Damascus believes the new battle between the two rival rebel factions has impeded Ankara’s planned operation, as they scramble to retake the areas they lost to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

Among the areas captured this week by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham was the key town of Dart Izza, which is also a major stronghold for the Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels in western Aleppo.

For the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), this latest round of rebel infighting is a blessing in disguise for them, as they can now finish off the Islamic State

(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) forces in southeast Syria before regrouping north.

Once the eastern bank of the Euphrates River Valley is cleared, the Syrian Democratic Forces and their allies can redeploy to the northern provinces to deal with the future Ottoman Turkish Army invasion.

In regards to the Syrian Arab Army, the rebel infighting only spells instability in the opposition-held areas.

The Syrian Army could use this as an opportunity to expand their territorial influence and retake several vital areas inside the Aleppo, Latakia, Idlib and Hama provinces.

Pipe bomb thrown at IDF soldiers in northern West Bank; no injuries
[IsraelTimes] Troops fire at assailant, who expeditiously departed at a goodly pace near the village of Yabad.

A man threw a pipe bomb at Israeli soldiers outside the village of Yabad in the northern West Bank, the army said Wednesday.

No troops were maimed in the incident.

Israel Defense Forces soldiers shot up the assailant, who expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. The military said it launched a search for the attacker.

On Monday Israeli forces briefly held and questioned the wife of a Paleostinian man suspected of carrying out a deadly terror attack earlier in December and set up roadblocks around his West Bank hometown of Kobar as the search for him continued, the Shin Bet security service said at the time.

Also Monday, the Israeli military released statistics for 2018 showing that the number of Paleostinian terror attacks in the West Bank had dropped for the fourth consecutive year.

In the past year, the army documented 87 "terror events," 10 fewer than the 97 recorded in 2017. It was a steep decline from the 169 in 2016 and 219 terror attacks in 2015.

The IDF also considers attacks on soldiers, not just civilians, to be terror attacks.

Settlers suspected of hurling stones at PA prime minister’s convoy — report
Tit for tat.
[IsraelTimes] Israeli settlers are suspected of hurling stones at the convoy of Paleostinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah while it was travelling in the northern West Bank last week, the Kan public broadcaster reports.

A passenger inside one of the vehicles was lightly injured from shattered glass.

The incident took place at the same junction where a large stone was hurled at a vehicle being driven by Yakoub Rabi in October. The rock went through the windshield and hit his wife Aisha in the head, killing the 47-year-old mother of eight.

An investigation has been opened into the incident with the growing assessment among defense officials being that Israeli settlers were responsible for hurling the stone. However,

HTS storms strategic rebel-held city in northeast Idlib
[ALMASDARNEWS] Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
’s large-scale offensive in northwestern Syria has now spread to the Idlib Governorate, where their troops are attacking a key city near the Aleppo provincial border.

The jihadist group reportedly began storming the strategic city of Saraqib on Wednesday after seizing a large swathe of territory from the Ottoman Turkish-backed Harakat Nouriddeen al-Zinki rebel faction.

Local activists claim that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham has entered Saraqib after they clashed with members of the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front at the eastern axis of the city.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham has been wrecking havoc inside the rebel-held areas of western Aleppo and northeastern Idlib since Tuesday.

The jihadist group has seized several areas from their former allies, including the strategic town of Dart Izza, which is located just west of Aleppo city.

While the National Liberation Front has sent reinforcements to these fronts, they have been unable to recover any lost territories.

Turkish Army amassing large force along Syrian border
[ALMASDARNEWS] On Monday, a Sputnik correspondent reported on the deployment of Syrian Army forces along the western border of the region of Manbij in Aleppo province. According to a source on the ground, the troops were deployed to prevent the advance of Ottoman Turkish-aligned Euphrates Shield forces on the city of Manbij.

Before the arrival of Syrian government forces, the city had been under the control of the US-supported Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG.) Both groups played a large role in the fight against ISIS (ISIS)*, but have long been designated terror organizations by Ankara.

The Kurds, who had been governing large swathes of northern and eastern Syria over the course of the conflict, reportedly invited the Syrian Army into Manbij amid reports of an imminent Ottoman Turkish offensive in the area.
