Afghan Forces Hold ‘Full Control’ Of Key Highway In Southeast
[ToloNews] A strategic highway linking Khost with Paktia province in the southwest of Afghanistan is fully under control of the Afghan forces over the past year while it was under influence of the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
and Haqqani network for five years.

The road, almost 50 kilometers in length, connects Zazi Maidan district of Khost with Dand Aw Patan district of Paktia.

Security forces are now able to travel by one vehicle through the graveled road, which is mostly rough terrains and has only one lane.

Dand Aw Patan is a district in Paktia which borders the Kurram tribal region of Pakistain. Zazi Maidan or Jaji Maidan is located in the northeastern part of Khost. It borders Bak district to the west, Paktia province to the north, and the Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
of Pakistain to the north and east. The district center is the village of Zazi Maidan, situated in the eastern part of the district.

TOLOnews news hounds Tamim Hamid and Abdul Haq Omeri traveled with an Army vehicle to the highway where they met many Army soldiers who said the highway is under their control.

Noor Mohammad, 38, who serves in the Afghan National Army ranks in Dand Aw Patan district, said he lost one of his comrades in operation for clearing the highway of holy warriors last year.

"He had a marvelous personality and was a talented boy. May the Almighty Allah forgive him. He lost his life just in this war front," said Noor
Mohammad, remembering his friend who was killed in an operation against the Taliban.

Mohammad’s friend, Noorullah, an Army soldier, said that he has not seen his family for a long time.

"My family and the children are missing me. I miss them too," said Noorullah.

"They (Taliban) are preparing from now on and they place mines in some areas. Their preparations will increase as the weather is warming," said Zakaria, 29, an Army soldier in Khost.

Every soldier in the area has their own stories.

"I still have six or seven months to return home and get married. If peace comes, I will do it soon and I will not waste the time," said Baz Mohammad, another soldier.

The Nahri area, which is the connecting point between Khost and Paktia provinces, was the last stop of the forces. A year ago, they had had to fight the Taliban to get to the area but now they reach there in a few hours of drive.

Sudan police fire tear gas as protesters rally
[PULSE.NG] Sudanese security forces fired tear gas Sunday at scores of protesters as they defied a nationwide state of emergency to demonstrate in Khartoum and its twin city Omdurman, witnesses said.

Protests and deadly festivities have rocked Sudan for more than three months, fanned by accusations that government mismanagement of the economy has caused food prices to soar and created shortages of fuel and foreign currency.

Chanting the protest movement's catchcry "Allan Snackbar" "freedom, peace, justice", protesters rallied in downtown Omdurman and in another district of the city witnesses said, adding that they were swiftly confronted by riot police with tear gas.

Protesters also demonstrated in Khartoum's eastern district of Burri, a site of regular anti-government gatherings, and at a vegetable market in a southern area of the capital, according to onlookers.

Riot police deployed in force in Burri to curb the protest there, a witness said on condition of anonymity, adding that demonstrators waving Sudanese flags marched along several roads in the district.

Troops neutralise a Boko Haram commander, 15 others on Lake Chad island
[PULSE.NG] The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), has neutralised a Boko Haram

commander, Malloum Moussa and 15 of his foot soldiers during a clearance operation on Lake Chad Island.

According to a statement by Col. Timothy Antigha, the front man of the task force on Sunday, troops destroyed five gun trucks belonging to the bandidos Lions of Islam in the operation.

He said the troops also placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
a woman whose relationship with the bandidos Lions of Islam is yet to be determined.

Antigha said intelligence revealed that Moussa who had one eye was a high ranking Boko Haram commander who has jurisdiction in the entire Southern island, including Daban Masara, Kirta Wulgo and Koleram.

He was notorious for imposing hefty levies on farmers, fishermen and cattle herders to fund Boko Haram terrorism and insurgency in the locality, he said.

Iraq
Locals in Zakho ask officials to intervene in PKK-Turkey conflict
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish shelling and Arclight airstrikes are a frequent occurrence in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq's border areas with its northern neighbor. People in the village of Sharanshi in Zakho say artillery fire has increased over the past few weeks.

The strikes have just caused material damages, but locals are panicked because of the big bangs.

"Initially we heard a bang. We did not feel it had hit our house. The second shell was not very close. But the third one landed on our house leading to electricity outage instantly. I immediately sent my family outside," Hani Toma Goryal told Rudaw on Saturday.

Sharanshi is a Christian-inhabited village surrounding Darkane town in Zakho, a district in Duhok.

The strikes have hit homes.

"We do not know what happened to us. We were stuck and did not know where to take shelter. I do not know how we managed to rush outside," Nada Hormiz said.

Locals and their priests are calling on officials to help their houses be protected from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)-The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

cross-border conflict.

The mayor of Darkane town says in the past mortars would land outside populated regions.

"We have a committee reporting all these incidents and lifting them to the [Duhok] province urging an end to random bombings. The [Duhok] governorate and the [KRG] interior ministry should make an official call to end random bombings in the area," Zeravan Mousa said.

Turkey's military announces nearly daily airstrikes in the Kurdistan Region, claiming to target the PKK.

The airstrikes have resulted in civilian deaths.
