Hanzalah Patel and Safwaan Mansur, both 22, were incarcerated

at an Istanbul hotel in June 2017, after contacting a US agent posing as an IS sympathiser.

Birmingham Crown Court heard the pair, who denied the charges, claimed the talk was just "thoughts and banter".

The jury returned its verdicts after less than an hour of deliberation and the pair will be sentenced on 25 April.

The court heard Patel, of Frederick Road in Leicester, and Mansur, of Hampton Road in Birmingham, first travelled to Istanbul in 2016, with the aim of getting into Syria.

They returned home after a contact failed to answer calls but went back the following year.

The court heard in May 2017, Mansur was in contact with a user of the encrypted messaging site Telegram - who was in fact working for the US government - to discuss crossing the border into Syria.

When the two men arrived in Istanbul, the contact told them he would send someone to help but once they revealed their whereabouts they were arrested.

A search of their luggage revealed camping equipment and outdoor survival gear, the court heard.

Patel said he wanted to go there to "big myself up" on returning after taking some pictures and talking to local people.

Media reports said that a second man was arrested, too, on charges of complicity.

Police described the arrested as a 21-year-old male. They said he admitted he was planning to "kill some children and take others hostage," with the goal of dragging police into a shootout.

Merah was an Algerian-born French citizen, who had trained with the Al Qaeda terrorist organization. On March 19, 2012, he carried out his attack, murdering Rabbi Jonathan Sandler and two of his sons, as well as another 8-year-old girl. Police shot and killed Merah during his arrest three days later, after a 30-hour siege and shootout that left six officers maimed.

Garmiyan court sentences 4 for ISIS membership
[Rudaw] A court in Garmiyan handed down prison sentences to four convicted Islamic State

in raids carried out in mid-2018. They all confessed to membership in the turban group and each was sentenced to five years and one month in jail, the Garmiyan Asayesh (Kurdish security) announced on Wednesday.

They will serve their time behind bars in a jail in Sulaimani.

Rights groups have criticized Iraq for its prosecution of ISIS suspects. Human Rights Watch has reported judicial authorities are rushing trials and using coerced confessions.

The so-called ISIS caliphate was declared defeated in eastern Syria last month. Iraq claimed victory over the group in December 2017. These military victories, however, have not dealt a death blow to the group or its ideology. Sleeper cells and small groups carry out kidnappings and liquidations and try to undermine government authority through attacks on infrastructure and "creating a sense of lawlessness," according to the UN.

Sulaimani Asayesh on Tuesday announced they had "foiled" a terror plot by the group, PUK media reported.

"Based on intelligence information, secret follow-ups, and round-the-clock efforts, we tracked down three different gangs trying to disturb the security of the Region and Sulaimani," the Asayesh stated.

They arrested eight people accused of being members of ISIS, "all Arabs."

At its peak, ISIS ruled over some 10 million people across Syria and Iraq. Today, the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
estimates some 14,000 to 18,000 turbans remain active on both sides of the border.

"In response, the troops fired at the suspects. Knives were found in their possession."

The three were transferred to an Israeli hospital, a spokesperson told AFP.

Hamas, other groups said to order halt to arson balloon launches
[IsraelTimes] Nighttime protests involving festivities and kabooms also reportedly to cease, after easing of Israel’s restrictions on movement into and out of Gazoo seen to progress.

They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror groups in the Gazoo Strip have instructed their members to stop launching flaming and explosive-laden balloons into Israel and to halt nighttime protests in the border region between the Jewish state and the coastal enclave, according to a Paleostinian report Wednesday.

The report in the al-Quds daily, citing "well-placed" sources, said smaller Paleostinian factions in the enclave would also halt launching balloons into Israel, amid intensive efforts to reach a truce with Israel.

Paleostinians in Gazoo have launched thousands of balloons and kites carrying incendiary devices or explosives at Israel since April 2018, burning thousands of dunams of farmlands in the southern part of the Jewish state.

Gazooks recently restarted the launches, after a several-month hiatus in the fall and winter, and began holding night protests as tensions on the Gazoo border have ticked up.

According to the report, the Gazook groups told their members to stop employing "rough tools" along the border, using a phrase that refers to incendiary and explosive-laden balloons and nighttime protests.

During the nighttime protests, rioters clash with Israeli troops, set off small kabooms, light tires on fire and point lasers at security forces. The loud sounds created by the kabooms at the nighttime protests have caused significant distress for many Israelis living adjacent to Gazoo.

Police front man Mickey Rosenfeld said in a phone call that he was not aware of any balloons landing in Israel on Wednesday. In addition, since early this week, Paleostinians in Gazoo have not carried out nighttime protests.

The Paleostinian groups and factions told their cadres to halt the balloons and protests after "the process of [advancing] understandings to lessen the siege on Gazoo started to move along well," the sources told al-Quds.

Palestinian said to attack Israelis on West Bank road, is shot dead
[IsraelTimes] A Paleostinian man tried to stab Israelis on a West Bank road Wednesday morning and was shot by a civilian, the Israeli military said.

There were no Israeli casualties in the incident near the village of Hawara, south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, according to the army.

The suspected terrorist was taken in a military ambulance at death's door to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, where he was declared dead, according to a statement from the hospital. Sources in the Paleostinian Authority Military Liaison’s Office identified him as Mohammed Abdel Fattah from the nearby town of Salfit.

Many troops arrived at the scene and began investigating the circumstances of the incident. Route 60, where the attempted attack took place, was temporarily closed to traffic.

The knife Fattah used in the attempted attack was recovered at the scene, the military said.

According to a statement from the Samaria Regional Council, the assailant attempted to open the door of a vehicle driven by an Israeli man and to stab his teenage daughter, whom he was driving to school. The father shot the attacker, the statement said.

The driver, Yehoshua Sherman, said the assailant blocked his car’s path with a knife in his hand.

"I went to work with my daughter and was driving from Elon Moreh to Tapuah," he said. "A few meters before Bitot Junction, a terrorist jumped at my car and tried to open the door and hurt me and my daughter. I went outside and with the help of a driver who was behind me we neutralized the terrorist and thankfully we weren’t hurt."

Last week, the IDF said a seven-year-old Israeli boy was lightly injured when shots were fired at the central West Bank settlement of Beit El from a nearby Paleostinian village.

The week before, IDF soldier Gal Keidan and civilian Rabbi Ahiad Ettinger were killed in a combined stabbing and shooting terror attack in the northern West Bank.

Fifth Corps Attacks Assad Intelligence in Daraa
[SYRIANOBSERVER] Members of Russia’s Fifth Corps have attacked regime checkpoints and accused those in charge of them of treating local residents badly and imposing unfair tolls writes Human Voice.

On Saturday, members of Russia’s Fifth Corps attacked a State Security military checkpoint in the town of Sur, in the Lajat region of the eastern Daraa countryside.

According to a source quoted by the Aleppo Today channel, Corps members, under the command of Ahmed al-Awda, beat and rebuked State Security checkpoint members including the officer in charge.

The source said that the attack occurred in front of a Russian military police patrol, saying that the patrol sided with the Fifth Corps and beat the checkpoint members and also reprimanded their officer.

The source added that the reason for the attack was the continuing violations by Iran-backed regime checkpoints and militias against civilians and their poor treatment of those passing through and imposing tolls on them.

A few days ago, members of the Fifth Corps attacked checkpoints of the Air Force Intelligence and 15th Division in the towns of al-Sahwa and al-Msafira in the eastern Daraa countryside, beating fighters and the officer in charge while directly threatening the officer Abou Rawad, and giving him a deadline to remove the checkpoints from the area due to the continuous violations of these checkpoints against residents, according to the Fifth Corps members.

The Assad regime’s Air Force Intelligence center in the southern Daraa province has been targeted amid an ongoing revolutionary mobilization against the Syrian regime in the province.

The Horan Free League quoted "local sources" as saying that unknown figures attacked for the third time in a week the Air Force Intelligence station in the city of Dael in the central Daraa province.

The sources said that the festivities, with light weapons, lasted for half an hour without any information about casualties on either side.

In the city of al-Hirak in the Daraa countryside, unknown figures on Thursday set fire to an image of Bashir al-Assad, 12 hours after it was placed at the city’s station, and then its remains were removed during the day.

A Syrian regime agent known as Eyad Nimr had put the image up on Wednesday afternoon near the station in response to another image of Assad being burnt at the city entrance.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has recorded a new liquidation amid the escalating security breakdown in the province, with unknown button men assassinating on Mar. 22, 2019, with machine guns a former rebel group fighter from the town of Tel Shihab in the Daraa countryside, who had recently joined the Fourth Division after agreeing to a reconciliation settlement with the regime forces, who took control of the area.
