Rival clashes kill 25 in central Somalia
[Iran Press TV] At least 25 people have been killed and many more injured following festivities between government-allied Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a faceless myrmidons and al-Shabaab
... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. fighters in central Somalia.

The skirmishes broke out late Wednesday between the two sides in Mahas and Mataban districts of Hiran region, located 215 kilometers (134 miles) north of the capital Mogadishu, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Over 45 people were also injured during Wednesday's bloody festivities as heavy gunfire and barrages of mortar shells were exchanged.

Somalia has been without a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Strategically located in the Horn of Africa, the lawless state remains one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP) in the world.

An estimated 1.4 million Somalis are displaced within the country while another 680,000 live as refugees in neighboring countries, according to the United Nations

The UNHCR reported in April that the number of Somali refugees arriving to neighboring countries during the first quarter of 2011 has more than doubled in comparison to the same period in 2010.

NATO raids pound Gaddafi compound
[Al Jazeera] NATO

has once again pounded the area near Libyan leader Muammar Qadaffy's
... a proud Arab institution for 42 years ...
compound, rattling windows in the heart of the capital, Tripoli.

A series of loud blasts rocked the city early on Thursday morning and smoke could be seen rising above the fortified compound of the embattled Libyan leader.

It was not clear what was hit, and there was no word on casualties, as government officials did not immediately comment on the strike.

NATO warplanes have repeatedly targeted the area in and around the Bab al-Aziziya compound, Qadaffy's command centre.

The North Atlantic alliance launched its air campaign nearly three months ago under a UN resolution to protect civilians.

It has been pounding Qadaffy's military and government positions with increasing vigour but has failed to dislodge him.

Amid the bombings, Mikhail Margelov, the Russian envoy, reached Tripoli and has met senior Qadaffy officials.

The ITAR-Tass, the Russian news agency, said Margelov met with Abdul-Ati al-Obeidi, the Libyan foreign minister and is expected to call on Al-Baghdadi Al-Mahmoudi, the prime minister.

Last week, while visiting Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi, Margelov said that Qadaffy had lost his legitimacy.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
Qadaffy's government approved a $31.4bn budget for the rest of 2011, the country's official news agency said on Thursday, in an apparent move to show it was functioning despite air strikes and sanctions.

The Libyan leader has described the rebels as criminals and al-Qaeda gunnies, and called the NATO intervention an act of colonial aggression aimed at grabbing Libya's oil.

Gaddafi son offers Libya elections
[Al Jazeera] A son of Muammar Qadaffy has announced that his father is willing to hold elections and step aside if he loses, an offer which could test the unity of the Western alliance trying to force the Libyan leader out.

Saif al-Islam's proposal, which follows a string of concessions offered by Qadaffy that Western powers have dismissed as ploys, came on Thursday amid mounting frustration in some NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the style of the American pants...
states at the progress of the military campaign.

"They (elections) could be held within three months. At the maximum by the end of the year, and the guarantee of transparency could be the presence of international observers," Saif al-Islam told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

'No exile'
He said his father, who has ruled the country for more than four decades, would be ready to step aside if he lost the election but would not go into exile.

"I have no doubt that the overwhelming majority of Libyans stand with my father and sees the rebels as fanatical Islamist fundamentalists, Death Eaters stirred up from abroad," the newspaper quoted Saif al-Islam as saying.

It was not clear what form the proposed vote would take. Libya has never held elections under Qadaffy and has no elected institutions.

There was no immediate reaction to the offer from the NATO military alliance or rebels.

Saif al-Islam is among three top Libyan officials wanted by the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
for alleged war crimes committed by Qadaffy's regime in bid to quell an uprising against his rule.

He made the offer as Libyan officials ruled out Qadaffy's departure during talks with Mikhail Margelov, the envoy leading Russia's efforts to end the Libyan conflict.

Tripoli targeted
It was not clear what was hit, and there was no word on casualties, as government officials did not immediately comment on the strike.

NATO warplanes have repeatedly targeted the area in and around the Bab al-Aziziya compound, Qadaffy's command centre.

The North Atlantic alliance launched its air campaign nearly three months ago under a UN resolution to protect civilians after Qadaffy's troops used force to put down the rebellion against his rule in February.

The Libyan leader has described the rebels as "rats" and says NATO's campaign is an act of colonial aggression aimed at stealing Libya's oil.

Rebel forces are now fighting Qadaffy's troops on three fronts: in the east of the country around the oil town of Brega; on the edge of rebel-held Misrata, Libya's third-biggest city, and in the western mountains south-west of Tripoli.

Rebels in the western mountains said on Wednesday they had taken control of two villages from pro-Qadaffy forces, building on gains which in the past few days have seen them advance to within about 100km of Tripoli.

But rebel forces show no signs of being able to break through to the capital soon.

Amid the standoff, kabooms continued to rock Tripoli with fresh NATO air strikes reported on Thursday morning.

"From the point of view of the Libyan leadership, there cannot be any talk of Qadaffy's departure today," Interfax news agency quoted Margelov as saying.

Libyan Regime in Talks with Rebels, Says Russia Envoy
Russia's special envoy Mikhail Margelov said he had been told by Libya's prime minister Thursday that Tripoli was holding talks with the Benghazi-based rebels in Gay Paree, Russian news agencies reported.

"I was assured at today's negotiations that direct contacts between Benghazi and Tripoli are already underway," ITAR-TASS quoted Margelov as saying after meeting Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi in Tripoli.

"The Libyan prime minister told me that a round of such contacts concluded yesterday in Gay Paree," he added.

French President Nicolas "Sarkozy has been informed of the outcome of these contacts," Margelov said.

Margelov, who earlier this month held talks in Benghazi, did not meet personally with Libya's strongman leader Moammar Qadaffy.

But he said after talks with the Libyan foreign minister earlier Thursday that he had been told that Qadaffy was "not ready" to go.

Margelov said he may meet the embattled leader during another visit to Tripoli, whose timing he did not provide.

The Russian envoy revealed few details of the Gay Paree negotiations, failing to specify who was involved or how many rounds of talks had been held.

But Margelov noted that from the Tripoli government's perspective, it was playing a part in direct talks.

"This means that a Libyan dialogue -- at least from the standpoint of Tripoli -- already essentially exists," ITAR-TASS quoted Margelov as saying.

"But in order for it to succeed, it is essential to cease fire as soon as possible and to extend mediation efforts," President Dmitry Medvedev's personal envoy said.

Medvedev agreed to help negotiate an end to the Libya conflict at a G8 summit in La Belle France last month.

Russia had opposed the international offensive against its traditional ally, and still retains formal contacts in Tripoli.

Suspected Suicide Bomb Hits Nigeria Police HQ
[An Nahar] A powerful bomb blew up inside the Nigerian police headquarters in the capital on Thursday, killing a suspected jacket wallah although other casualties were not immediately clear, officials said.

"The police force headquarters has been bombed, everywhere is bombed," deputy national police front man Yemi Ajayi told Agence La Belle France Presse from Abuja.

"A suspected suicide bomber died in the incident. Many vehicles were destroyed," emergency services front man Yushau Shuaib said.

The bomb went kaboom! in a car park inside the police headquarters.

Roads leading to the attack site were cordoned off at least a kilometer away as a thick plume of smoke rose from the area.

Another emergency services front man said the bomb was in a car in the parking lot.

The kaboom is the latest in blasts to have hit the capital since October last year.

The police headquarters is situated less than a kilometer from the presidential offices and residence.

The blast came a day after an Islamist sect behind other deadly attacks, mainly in the country's north, threatened Wednesday "fiercer" action and said it would not enter into talks with the government.

The Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. Currently wearing a false nose and moustache and answering to Jama'atu Ahlus-Sunnah Lidda'Awati Wal Jihad, or Big Louie...
group, which disclosed for the first time that it had links with Islamists in Somalia, said dialogue with President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
has collapsed.

It said it was angered by a police declaration that "the days of Boko Haram are numbered".

"Very soon, we will wage jihad ...," the group said in a handwritten statement.

The sect admitted links with a foreign Islamist group connected to Al-Qaeda, although security experts had already speculated that it had established ties with Islamists in north Africa.

Also known as the Nigerian Taliban, the group launched an uprising in 2009 which was put down by a brutal military assault that left hundreds dead.

The sect, which has pushed for the creation of an Islamic state, has been blamed for shootings of police and community leaders, kabooms and raids on churches, cop shoppes and a prison.

Bahrain frees activists held after UN sit-in
[Al Jazeera] Three young women tossed in the slammer by Bahraini police while holding a sit-in protest at the UN offices in Manama have been released, the United Nations
...an international organization whose stated aims of facilitating interational security involve making sure that nobody with live ammo is offended unless it's a civilized country...
said.

"The United Nations Development Programme in New York has been advised that three women who conducted a peaceful protest at the organisation's offices in the capital Manama have been released by police and that charges will not be pressed," the UNDP said in a statement on Wednesday.

It said the UNDP had made "urgent representation to Bahrain's authorities to release the three women," and that the UN agency had "launched a formal investigation into how the incident at its office was handled".

The Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights had said on its website that the women, including Zaineb al-Khawaja, daughter of activist Abdelhadi al-Khawaja, were jugged three hours into their sit-in.

They were protesting against the arrest of family members and delivered a letter to UN chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
calling for their release, it said.

Bahraini authorities in mid-March crushed a month-long protest movement on the streets led by Shia demonstrators calling for democratic reform in the Sunni-ruled state.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Michael Posner of the US state department, said American officials were concerned about claims of abuses against detainees following Bahrain's crackdown on protesters.

Posner, the assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
and labour, expressed hopes
for proposed talks next month between Bahrain's Sunni rulers and opposition groups.

Initiating dialogue
"The challenge now is how to initiate dialogue with representatives of all sides and to ensure that this dialogue will address and resolves divisive issues."

Posner also called for transparency during the forthcoming trials of dozens of people charged with illegal activities during the protests.

The assistant secretary of state, who spent four days in Bahrain, attended the contentious trial on Monday of 48 medics facing charges ranging from incitement to storing weapons to taking over a hospital.

The medics - who helped treat pro-democrracy protesters maimed in the state's crackdown - are accused of supporting the protests against the rulers.

At least 31 people have died since the unrest in the country began in February.

Clashes in Aden
[Yemen Post] Clashes were reported between the security forces and armed people in Yemen's business capital Aden on Wednesday after the armed people heavily fired live bullets into the air frightening the people and looted some properties. No casualties were reported.

The confrontations took place at the entrances of Sheikh Othman and Al-Mansoura districts.

The armed people were believed to be of separatists, eyewitnesses said, adding that military vehicles deployed to the streets after the gunnies took two cars that belonged to a private company.

Meanwhile,
...back at the buffalo wallow, Tex and his new-found Indian friend were preparing a little surprise for the bandidos...
the security is very tight across the port city to face possible infiltration of gun-hung tough guys from Abyan and Lahj, two southern provinces experiencing insecurity amid battles with Islamists and saboteurs.

Also, media outlets said today that Defense Minister met on Tuesday with security leaders and urged them to secure Aden and prevent possible infiltrations from other cities.

Gunmen Attack Security, Public Offices in Lahj
[Yemen Post] Gunmen tried to break early Wednesday into the offices of public security, central security and political security in Yemen's Lahj province triggering fierce festivities that left many dead and maimed.

The News Yemen quoted local sources as saying that the identified victims were all from the security systems and that the battles at dawn were really fierce with the armed people using RPGs.

The people were terrified keeping themselves indoors and the stores closed as security sources were quoted as saying that some of the armed people were killed also.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the website quoted informed sources as saying that the armed people took over security and other public offices, and they fired RPGs at the central bank branch and the judicial compound but they failed to take control of them.

People Want Transitional Council, Refuse Power Initiatives
[Yemen Post] Massive demonstrations were held in several Yemeni cities on Wednesday to condemn the attempts to revive the GCC-brokered power-sharing deals, amid reports that the international community is seeking to fill the constitutional vacuum in Yemen through resurrecting the dead initiative.

President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
had backed out of signing the deal three times at the last minute triggering its suspension by the GCC countries and the opposition to describe it as dead.

Hundreds of thousands erupted into the streets in the cities of Taiz, Dhale, Baidha'a and Hadramout and rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud such as 'we will not retreat or be scared,'....'no Dire Revenge™ and no hatred', 'will continue our protest until the goals of our peaceful revolution were met'.

They called for an immediate transitional council as they reiterated their refusal to any attempts or initiatives to back the Saleh regime; condemned the military action against the people in some cities including Taiz; and called for opening trials for the regime officials.

Furthermore, they called on the international community to take decisive action that would help them gain the trust of the Yemeni people who are seeking the ouster of the regime instead of revealing or reviving unhelpful initiatives.

Meantime, the opposition have asked the youth-led protesters in the squares of change and freedom to give them several days to arrange for taking the country out of the current situation.

"We need more days because Yemen will see different and better decisions by sisters and friends of the country. The protesters should help us to do what we can do to help our nation pass through this turning point successfully before they start any escalation," said Muhammad Qahtan, the JMP front man.

"If we fail to do something, the people can decide and go ahead as they want," he added.

#2  In 1810, the Mexican War of Independence had between 200,000-500,000 killed in 11 years.

In 1910, the Mexican Civil War had between 500,000 and 2,000,000 killed in 10 years.

So far, in four years, the Mexican Drug War has only claimed 40,000 or so. But much like the Mexican Civil War, in its early stages with many bandito gangs, the violence was limited. It only got legs once the semi-finals were over and the major players, like Poncho Villa, emerged. Then the bloodbath began in earnest.

China-Japan-Koreas
China detains rumour-monger who sparked riots
[Emirates 24/7] Police in southern China have announced they have jugged a person suspected of spreading rumours on the Internet that triggered violent festivities and a major security clampdown.

The public security bureau in Guangzhou announced on their official page on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, that the suspect surnamed Chen was jugged on Tuesday and had confessed to publishing false information online.

The festivities in Xintang, a district in the greater Guangzhou area, began last Friday after rumours spread that police had beaten a street hawker to death and manhandled his pregnant wife.

Authorities were forced to deploy hundreds of officers and armoured vehicles as the protests continued into the weekend, with people hurling bricks and bottles at local officials and police, and vandalising ATMs and police posts.

Armed police reportedly used tear gas to disperse the crowd, and at least 25 people have been placed in long-term storage so far.

The man rumoured to have been killed appeared at a presser held by the local government on Sunday, saying he, his wife and their unborn baby girl were "doing very well".

"The false information spread on Weibo, QQ (China's popular instant messaging service) and online forums had a nasty influence on society," the police said late Wednesday.

The riots in Guangdong province, China's industrial heartland, are the latest in a recent flare-up of unrest in the country, which analysts say highlights resentment towards an unresponsive government.

Last Thursday, 1,500 people clashed with riot squads in the central province of Hubei following the alleged death in police custody of a local politician.

Earlier last week, hundreds of people battled police and destroyed cars in another incident in Guangdong province, after a factory worker was maimed in a knife attack over a wage dispute.

And late last month, thousands of ethnic Mongols protested in northern China for several days after the killing of a herder laid bare simmering anger over what some perceive as Chinese oppression.

The protests have compounded the jitters of a government already wary about the potential for Arab-style unrest to spread to China, and for rising inflation to spark more violence.

Updated: Pentagon area roads closed, man arrested due to car w/ suspicious package
Most major roads in northern VA were closed. Commute was a total mess today - this incident plus trees & power down on a backup route

Update: 10:00 CST
Authorities identify suspect in Friday morning's suspicious package incident outside the Pentagon as Yonathan Melaku, a lance corporal in the Marine Corps Reserve. Officials say Melaku, a Muslim, carried a backpack he claimed contained explosive materials. Tests showed, however, that the substance was "inert."

#3  American citizen of Ethiopian descent.

Sources told ABC News the man's backpack contained what officials suspect is ammonium nitrate and spent 9mm shells as well as written material that contained statements including: "al qaeda taliban rules."

One source told ABC News that they need final confirmation on whether it is ammonium nitrate and it's not clear whether this was a workable device.

Apparently, this man is in the habit of acting suspiciously.

Previously, the man was suspected of planting suspicious devices just outside Washington, D.C., in the area of Arlington, Va., at the national cemetery, the Pentagon and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Test runs, then the real thing?

Adezai lashkar gets help from Akakhels
[Dawn] New vigilante groups that have formed in Akakhel area have provided breathing space for the Adezai Qaumi Lashkar, which alone had been facing off the snuffies in the Frontier Region of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar so far.

Volunteers of the Adezai lashkar however say they are continuing night patrols in their area to fight off hard boys` raids.

Observers say the two blasts on Matani-Akakhel Road in the first week of June and killing of tribal people in passenger vans show that snuffies are determined to target the entire Akakhel tribe.

Police officials point out that the snuffies need Akakhel area of FR Peshawar for their movements to other districts, especially Kohat and Nowshera, and also to Khyber Agency.

The FIRs of the two kabooms at Matani Bazaar have been registered against a snuffies group, led by Aurangzeb alias Naray and Jangrez. Belonging to Adezai village, these snuffies have beat feet to tribal regions leaving behind their houses and other properties, according to sources.Sources believe that snuffies of the said group are responsible for most of the sabotage acts in Peshawar.

Hundreds of volunteers of peace bodies have been killed and injured in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
and Fata during the past three years. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
Adezai lashkar is the worst affected body in settled areas.

Located at the border of Darra Adamkhel, Adezai is strategically important area as it is the first entry point for those, who enter from the semi-tribal region into the provincial metropolis.

According to police officials, snuffies enter Peshawar from Mohmand
... Named for the Mohmand clan of the Sarban Pahstuns, a truculent, quarrelsome lot. In Pakistain, the Mohmands infest their eponymous Agency, metastasizing as far as the plains of Peshawar, Charsadda, and Mardan. Mohmands are also scattered throughout Pakistan in urban areas including Bloody Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta. In Afghanistan they are mainly found in Nangarhar and Kunar...
via Michini and from Khyber Agency via Sarband, Achini and Akakhel areas. Now, other areas seem to have been covered to some extent but Badbher and Matani are still unsafe, police say.

It is hard fortune of Adezai villagers as they have to block entry of snuffies from Akakhel to Peshawar.

The deputy chief of Adezai Qaumi Lashkar, Fazal Malik, says that the volunteers of his peace body are always ready to fight snuffies as they are performing night duties without any negligence.

"The first target of snuffies is now the recently formed lashkars in Akakhel as anti-Taliban volunteers are regularly supporting security forces in identification of saboteurs at checkpoints," he adds.

Mr Malik says that peace bodies in semi-tribal regions can play vital role in fighting against terrorists. "We can`t stop fighting against Taliban as they have killed our commanders, family heads and children in festivities and suicide kabooms," he says.

He adds that many of his relatives and friends have asked him to go abroad but he will not do so till a logical end of the conflict. He says that about 70 members of their lashkar have been killed so far in suicide kabooms and murders.

SP Abdul Kalam Khan says that Peshawar is completely under control of police but the main cause of terror acts in the city is that it shares borders with Fata.

"The distance between the borders of Peshawar and tribal region is not more than 12 metres. That`s why snuffies and criminals can easily enter Peshawar and escape after committing crimes," he adds. He says that it is need of the hour to uproot snuffies from Fata.

Mr Khan says that snuffies have no controllers in rural areas of Peshawar but they can easily enter Peshawar from their safe havens, located in Fata.

In Peshawar, he says, there is no `no-go-area` but the area is so vast that it cannot be controlled at night due to low visibility.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
he appreciates anti-Taliban volunteers and community police for showing bravery against snuffies and rendering sacrifices.

Five killed in cross-border attack
[Dawn] Scores of armed forces of Evil crossed the border from Afghanistan on Thursday and stormed a village in the country's tribal belt, killing five civilians, Pak officials said.

The forces of Evil targeted Mamond village in Bajaur district, which borders the Afghan province of Kunar, despite the presence of Pak security checkpoints erected to check Talibs.

"Some 250-300 forces of Evil targeted civilians in Mamond. At least five civilians, including two women were killed," local government official Fazle Akbar told AFP.

Akbar said three women were also maimed in the attack, which took place about 65 kilometres northwest of Khar, the main town in Bajaur.

"We have sent army and paramilitary troops to the area as we got reports that forces of Evil are still present there," a security official told AFP.

"Some forces of Evil were also killed when troops in the area responded, but we do not know the number of casualties yet," the official said.

On June 1 and June 3, hundreds of forces of Evil besieged an area in Pakistain's northwestern district of Upper Dir on the Afghan border, sparking prolonged fighting that killed at least 34 people.

Earlier in the day, a kaboom on security forces severely maimed at least two security personnel in Upper Orakzai Agency
... crawling with holy men, home to Darra Adam Khel, the world's largest illegal arms bazaar. 14 distinct tribes of beturbanned primitives inhabit Orakzai agency's 1500 or so square kilometers...
, DawnNews reported. The bomb was said to be detonated through a remote-controlled device.

More than 4,400 people have been killed across Pakistain in attacks blamed on Taliban and other beturbanned goon networks over the last four years.

Pakistan's Taliban backs Zawahri as al Qaeda chief
[Dawn] Pakistain's Taliban movement, regarded as one of the world's most dangerous bad turban groups, said on Thursday it backed Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Second in command of al-Qaeda, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
as al Qaeda's new leader and vowed to carry out attacks against Western targets.

A bad turban website said Zawahri has taken command of al Qaeda, after the killing of the late Osama bin Laden
... who is currently taking a long nap in the dirt... urm... water...
in a secret US raid in Pakistain last month.

Pak Taliban front man Ehsanullah Ehsan described Zawahri as an "capable person" and said the former Egyptian doctor would inspire the group to take on the West.

"We have been carrying out our activities which, inshallah (God willing), will gather more momentum. We will get Dire Revenge™ for the oppression by the West," he told Rooters by telephone from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

The Pak Taliban, which has close links with al Qaeda and other anti-Western bad turban organisations, has been blamed for many of the suicide kabooms across Pakistain, a US ally seen as critical to American efforts to stabilise Afghanistan.

It has bigger ambitions but has not proven capable of carrying out sophisticated attacks in the West. It grabbed credit for a botched bombing in New York's Times Square.

Last year, the United States added the Tehrik-i-Taliban (Taliban Movement of Pakistain) to its list of foreign terrorist organisations.

US prosecutors charged TTP leader Hakimullah Mehsud over a plot that killed seven CIA employees at a US base in Afghanistan in 2009.

Zawahri's relationship with groups like the TTP could determine whether the man regarded as the operational brains behind al Qaeda can strengthen an organisation that has lost steam since the Sept. 11 attacks a decade ago.

Omar Khalid Khorasani, a senior Pak Taliban capo, recently said in response to questions posed by Rooters that Zawahri was the group's "chief and supreme leader".

Zawahri has expressed contempt for the US-backed Pak government. In recordings posted on the Internet he has urged Paks to revolt against their government and army. Like other bad turbans, he sees Pakistain as a US puppet.

In an audio recording, released in September last year, he accused the Pak government of responding too slowly to floods that devastated the country.

"The primary concern of the ruling class in the government and army of Pakistain is filling their domestic and foreign bank accounts with dollars, and as far as they are concerned, Pakistain and its people can go to hell," he said.
Actually, he's got a point there...
Zawahri has tried to settle scores with the Egyptian government on Pak soil. He was seen as the criminal mastermind of the suicide kaboom of the Egyptian embassy in Islamabad in 1995 that killed 16 people.

Abu Bakr Bashir gets 15 years
[An Nahar] An Indonesian court on Thursday placed in long-term storage radical Islamist holy man Abu Bakar Bashir
... Leader of the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council and proprietor of the al-Mukmin madrassah in Ngruki. The spriritual head of Jemaah Islamiya, which he denies exists. Bashir was jugged and then released in the wake of the 2002 Bali bombings, which he blamed on a conspiracy among the U.S., Israel, and Australia ...
for 15 years for funding a terrorist group that was planning attacks against Westerners and politicians.

The 72-year-old preacher showed little emotion as Judge Herri Swantoro read out the guilty verdict and sentence at the end of a four-month trial in the South Jakarta district court.

"Abu Bakar Bashir has been proven guilty of planning and misleading other people to fund terror activities ... and is sentenced to 15 years in jail," the judge said, triggering a gasp from the holy man's supporters in the court.

Draped in his customary white robes and skull-cap, the man seen as the spiritual leader of regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah immediately promised to appeal the sentence, which he called the work of the devil.

"This is haram (forbidden in Islam). I reject this because it is cruel and disregards Islamic sharia law. This ruling is by the friends of the devil and it is haram for me to accept it," he said in response to the judge.

About 500 forces of Evil erupted into shouts of "holy shit! Allahu akbar" (God is great) outside the court as the verdict was read. Some 3,000 police backed by armored vehicles and snipers were on hand in the event of violence.

"This trial was a joke. They haven't looked for the truth, they only want to serve the interests of the current political power," said a front man for Bashir's radical organization, Jemaah Ansharut Tauhid (JAT).

Prosecutors had demanded a 20-year life sentence for Bashir, who was found guilty of channeling about $50,000 to a terrorist cell that was conducting military-style training in Aceh province in 2009.

Police say the so-called al-Qaeda in Aceh group, which was discovered in February last year, was planning liquidations and Mumbai-style attacks by highly trained suicide gunnies.

Bashir had been facing the death penalty for providing illegal weapons to the group but authorities dropped those charges early in the proceedings. The court also acquitted him of a charge of possessing illegal weapons.

He rejects all allegations of materially supporting terrorists, while publicly exhorting his followers to wage jihad or "holy war" against the West and Indonesia's form of secular, democratic government.

For decades the frail but pugnacious preacher has agitated in mosques, Islamic schools and through radical groups such as JAT, which he established in 2008, for the creation of an Islamic state under strict sharia law.

Several JAT members are under arrest and have implicated Bashir in the Aceh cell, which was operationally led by Dulmatin, one of Southeast Asia's most bandidos until he was killed in a police raid in March last year.

Bashir told news hounds before the sentencing session began that he was being framed by Australia and the United States, a claim he has repeated throughout his trial.

"They want me to disappear from Indonesia... The benefit to them? To kill Islam, to kill defenders of Islam, jugged and killed without reason," he said.

Police have tightened security at shopping centers across the sprawling city and deployed extra personnel following threats of kabooms in the event of Bashir's conviction.

Indonesia has been rocked by a series of attacks by Jemaah Islamiyah and its offshoots, including bombings of tourist spots on Bali, the Australian embassy and luxury Jakarta hotels.

Bashir served almost 26 months behind bars over the 2002 Bali bombings but his conviction was overturned after his release in 2006.

Prosecutors have also unsuccessfully charged him with involvement in church bombings in 2000 and an attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003.

Analysts said Bashir's jailing would not reduce the Islamic exemplar threat in Indonesia, the world's most populous Mohammedan-majority country and a key U.S. ally in Southeast Asia.

"A new leader will try to prove he's worthy by launching a big attack of some sort," said University of Indonesia expert Andi Widjajanto.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian tanks ring restive northern towns
[Al Jazeera] Syrian tanks and armoured vehicles have reportedly reinforced their positions around the northern town of Maarat al-Numan, prompting more residents to flee President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad's

brutal crackdown on dissent.

Residents and a Syrian rights group said on Thursday dozens of tanks and personnel carriers also deployed around Khan Sheikhun, a town about 30km south of Maarat al-Numan on the main north-south highway linking Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
and Aleppo.
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...

"Dozens of tanks, armoured cars, personnel carriers and army trucks have been deployed at entrance points to Khan Sheikhun, and soldiers have started going in" to the northwest town near Hama, said rights activist Rami Abdulrahman.

Despite being globally condemned, al-Assad has continued to send troops to flashpoint cities and towns to suppress the protests against his one-party rule.

Syrian rights groups say 1,300 civilians and more than 300 soldiers and police have been killed since the protests, inspired by Arab uprisings which toppled leaders in Egypt and Tunisia, broke out in March against 41 years of rule by the Assad family.

Fleeing residents
The latest focus of the crackdown has been in the northwest of the country, around the town of Jisr al-Shughur where authorities say 120 security personnel were killed earlier this month.

The Khan Sheikhun deployment marks a continuation of military operations in the province of Idlib, where forces have targeted Ariha, Maarat al-Numan, Jisr al-Shughur and its surroundings, an activist said.

The crackdown has forced thousands of refugees to stream north across the border into Turkey.

Maarat al-Numan's residents said thousands of people headed to Aleppo and to Turkey, adding to a refugee flow that started in anticipation of the military assault on Jisr al-Shughur.

Syria's official state news agency said on Wednesday thousands of people were returning to Jisr al-Shughur. However,
we can't all be heroes Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
Turkish officials said 8,900 Syrians, many from that town, were still in Turkey, which has set up four refugee camps.

"We are hearing that they are calling for people to return, but we know that we will die if we go back," said a refugee on the Turkish side of the border who gave his name as Ahmed.

"I am not planning to go back unless Bashir al-Assad falls," said Abdulkadir, a 28-year-old refugee, who decamped from a village near Jisr al-Shughur two days ago. Another 10,000 refugees were sheltering inside Syria close to the border.

Turkish call
Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa spent the day shopping for new underwear. Tonight was going to be a special occasion...
Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish foreign minister, held three hours of talks with Syria's special envoy Hassan Turkmani on Thursday morning and called for an immediate end to the crackdown.

"Turkey wanted a "strong, stable, prosperous Syria", which would be achieved if Assad implemented reforms,." Davutoglu said.

"In order to achieve this, the violence must stop immediately. Yesterday I clearly saw the fear in the eyes of the people and I shared this," he said in Ankara, a day after he visited a border camp in Yayladagi, about 20km from Jisr al-Shughur, and talked to refugees.

Turkish authorities have tightened control over the border, making it harder for Syrians to cross unofficially.

A Turkish Red Islamic Thingy official, who requested anonymity, said more tent camps were being prepared at the eastern end of the 800km border, near the Turkish city of Mardin, far from where the current influx of refugees is concentrated.

Fleeing refugees described shootings by troops and gunnies loyal to al-Assad, known as "shabbiha", and the burning of land and crops in a scorched earth policy to subdue people of the region. The government has accused "gangs" of burning crops.
