Egypt seeks to distance police from protester killing
[Ynet] Egypt has sought to distance the police from the weekend shooting death of a female protester, saying a forensic examination shows she was killed by a type of projectile that is "absolutely" not used by security forces.
"See? Wudn't us."
A bigwig from the Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, also dismissed as "inconsequential" video clips showing two masked, black-clad coppers pointing their rifles in her direction as gunshots rang out and a voice commanded "fire."

The official, Gamal Mukhtar, said Wednesday that police had no need to use force to disperse the small protest in which the slain activist, 32-year-old mother Shaimaa el-Sabbagh, participated.

He did not explain why police used tear gas to disperse the protest, as stated by the country's top prosecutor.

Beni Amrane terror trial begins
[MAGHAREBIA] Defendants charged with involvement in the June 2008 Boumerdes twin bombing will stand trial in Algiers on Wednesday (January 28th), APS reported.

The Beni Amrane attack began when a roadside bomb on the RN5 motorway killed two people. A second bomb detonated 15 minutes later outside the railway station. Ten policemen and firefighters responding to the first explosion were killed in the blast.

report on Wednesday.

The report by the U.N.'s Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) put the daily arrivals rate at 774 and said it expected 30,000 refugees to arrive in the country this year.

"The humanitarian community believes that an additional population influx is expected given the security context -- the increase in attacks by Boko Haram in northern Nigeria as well as possible tensions before elections," the report said.

Nigerians go to the polls on February 14 with President Goodluck Jonathan

looking to secure a second four-year term.

The bloodshed in northeast Nigeria has reached unprecedented levels in recent weeks, raising questions about security for the general elections.

On Sunday, Boko Haram forces of Evil took control of the city of Monguno and its military base close to Lake Chad in northeast Nigeria after intense fighting with the Nigerian army.

Chad has called on countries in the region to form a broad coalition in the fight against the Islamist group. The country has already deployed its army along its borders and is sending an additional contingent to Cameroon

.Chad's president Idriss Deby has also expressed intentions of taking back the strategic Nigerian town of Baga from Boko Haram, situated on Lake Chad.

More than 13,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009 in Nigeria and close to 1.5 million people have been made homeless.

Fears in Nigeria over Repeat of Election Violence
[AnNahar] All that's left of the Moslem neighborhood in Madakiya, in Nigeria's northwestern Kaduna state, are decomposing bricks and graffiti-covered walls standing in fields of charred grass.

Moslems and Christians once lived together in the village but Madakiya's entire Moslem population fled to a nearby town in rioting after the 2011 presidential election.

With Nigerians set to vote again next month, people in the religiously mixed state are wary of a repeat after houses were looted, markets burned, and people killed in the streets.

Nigeria army was warned prior to Baga attack: Amnesty
[Iran Press TV] Amnesia Amnesty International says the Nigerian military had been warned of a deadly attack by Boko Haram

bully boyz in early January but failed to take any action.

The UK-based rights group said on Wednesday that it obtained information from senior military officers and other sources indicating the country's defense officials had prior knowledge of the January 3 attack that left as many as 2,000 people dead in the northeastern town of Baga, according to some reports.

"It is clear from this evidence that Nigeria's military leadership woefully and repeatedly failed in their duty to protect civilians of Baga and Monguno despite repeated warnings about an impending threat posed by Boko Haram," said Amnesty's Africa director Netsanet Belay.

In Baga, troops had reported a build-up of Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
murderous Moslems, signifying an imminent attack in the area, according to the rights groups.

The bully boyz had themselves warned the civilians of the impending onslaught, which forced hundreds to flee.

"The misleading conclusions by Amnesia Amnesty International could have been avoided if they had made meaningful efforts to verify the inciting allegations," said Nigerian Defense Ministry front man Chris Olukolade in a statement issued in response to Amnesty's claims.

The rights group is using Boko Haram's measures as a pretext to conclude that the military's counter-terrorism operations are "inaccurate and unfair", he added.

Abuja puts the corpse count from the brutal attack at 150.

Arabia
U.S. to develop an intelligence relationship with the Houthis in Yemen
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] As the Iranian-backed Shiite Houthis take over the Yemeni capital, there are indications the U.S. and the Houthis may be teaming up to battle a common foe, al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula, or AQAP.

Senior U.S. intelligence official Michael Vickers has indicated that despite the political unrest in Yemen, the U.S. has developed an intelligence relationship with the Houthis that may allow the U.S. to continue its counterterrorism attacks against AQAP.

The undersecretary of defense for intelligence, Vickers told the Washington-based Atlantic Council that it is a "safe assumption" that the U.S. maintains these intelligence ties.

This revelation comes even as the B.O. regime has suspended its counterterrorism operations in Yemen with the resignation of U.S. ally and Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

Yemeni security services, which provide intelligence to U.S. drone operators for the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command, reportedly have been taken over by the Houthis.

Like the U.S., the Houthis are fighting AQAP and "we've been able to continue some of our counterterrorism operations against al-Qaeda in the past months," Vickers said.

Vickers also indicated some counterterrorism operations, such as drone flights against AQAP targets in Yemen, could continue even with the Houthis in charge of the capital.

Yemen rivals sign deal to form salvation government
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] Yemeni rivals agreed on Monday to form a salvation national government, according to reports coming from Sanaa, Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

U.N. envoy Jamel Benomar had earlier met with leaders of Shiite Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militia who seized the presidential palace last week, plunging the impoverished Arab country deeper into crisis.

The meeting was among a series of talks that the Moroccan diplomat was holding in Sanaa to try to broker an agreement after Western-backed President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi resigned, U.N. front man Stephane Dujarric told news hounds.

"He has been convening and chairing daily meetings with 16 political parties in order to build consensus on a way forward," Dujarric said.

Benomar briefed the Security Council by video link from Sanaa, telling the 15 members that the country was on edge, with the Huthis firmly in control in Sanaa, according to two diplomats who attended the session.

Benomar said Hadi and his cabinet were effectively under house arrest and that violence could erupt at any time, but he added that a power-sharing deal "was possible," the diplomats said.

The envoy was also in touch with Gulf countries which have come out in strong support of Hadi, whose resignation on Thursday has yet to be endorsed by the parliament.

Houthi Leader Blames Separatists in South Yemen for Political Stalemate
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] The Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebel group that has seized control of Yemen's capital said on Tuesday that separatist forces in the south were responsible for the impasse preventing an end to the political crisis convulsing the country.

"Some forces in the south are taking provocative steps," the leader of the group, Abdel Malik al-Houthi, said in a televised speech. "This country is for all of us and can fit all of us."

Mr. Houthi proposed new talks in the speech, and his group released a presidential aide seized 10 days ago as a good-will gesture. But there was no indication that his speech signaled an easing to the crisis in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country and an incubator for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

US new cooperation with Shiite rebels to fight al-Qaeda will lead to sectarian war in Yemen' analyst
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] The Yemeni political analyst Jamal Al-Awadhi said to YOL that the new US strategy of anti-terrorism in Yemen will lead to sectarian war between Shiites and Sunnis.
...or follow it, at least. It's quite a bit too late to lead there.
It is known that the Sunnis in Yemen, representing 70% , The whole people in southern are Sunnis, while the people in the north of north of Yemen are Shiite' Al-Awadhi said. He added that the US war against Al-Qaeda in the Sunni areas using the militia of al-Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels (Shiite) made new alliances between Sunni tribes and al-Qaeda on the basis of al-Qaeda also belong to the Sunni sect . The Sunni tribes considered the Shiite Houthi attacks on their areas are targeted the Sunnis in the light of the great historical differences and conflict between Sunnis and Shiites in Yemen' Al-Awadhi Said.

Thus, al-Qaeda is no longer fighting alone, but has become more powerful than ever because of the alliance and cooperation with Sunni tribes to protect their areas of expansion of armed Shiite militias' the Yemeni analyst noted.
And still the Americans have not yet become involved.
Al-Awadi added that if the current US news strategy continues in the war against al-Qaeda in Yemen by the new alliance with the Houthis that will lead the expansion of armed festivities in more than one area and instead of weakening al-Qaeda the result will be the opposite.
We could kill them all, and let God sort them out. Would you prefer that, Mr. Analyst?
There are many examples where the Sunni tribes and al-Qaeda attacks in areas such as al-Beidah and Marib province cost al- Huothi militia dozens of victims daily, the United States should examine their strategy well in Yemen, where it became necessary to deal with the war against al-Qaeda in Yemen with new means and more accurate, Al-Awadhi said.

In the short term, he will have appeared to make the world more peaceful - ignoring ISIS, Boko Haram, and other terrorist "insurgencies".

Of course, after Iran gets their nukes, and Tel Aviv disappears under a mushroom cloud, and all hell breaks loose in the Middle East, the world will be at war. But at least his legacy will be assured.

German anti-Islam group PEGIDA loses second leader in a week
[Ynet] German anti-Islam movement PEGIDA lost its second leader in a week on Wednesday when Kathrin Oertel, who took over after the founder quit for posing as Hitler, also stepped down, citing media pressure.

The Dresden-based group announced on its Facebook page that Oertel and another board member were resigning. The 37-year-old became PEGIDA's national figurehead after founder Lutz Bachmann resigned a week ago after news that he was being investigated.

PEGIDA said Oertel had quit "due to the massive hostility, threats and career disadvantages", adding: "Even the strongest of women has to take time out when at night photographers and other strange figures are sneaking around outside her house."
It's all fun and games until it isn't anymore.

Facebook complies with Turkish court order, starts censoring Prophet (PBUH) images
[DAWN] Complying with a Turkish court order, Facebook has started to censor pictures of Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!), deemed hurtful to a majority of Moslems living in Turkey, said a report published on The Washington Post.

The decision comes barely weeks after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted an unrelenting statement on his profile declaring his unwavering support for the right to free speech and solidarity with the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
, which suffered a deadly attack that took 12 lives, most of whom were cartoonists. He included the #Jesuischarlie hashtag in his post to show support for the slain victims.

On Sunday, a Turkish court had ordered Facebook to block a number of pages deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!), threatening to stop access to the whole social networking site if it does not comply. The country is believed to have 40 million members on Facebook.

Obama to Request Hike in U.S. Military Budget
[AnNahar] President Barack Obama
I am the change that you seek...
plans to ask for an increase in military spending in a proposed budget for 2016, with a request for $585 billion that would exceed funding caps mandated by Congress, officials said Wednesday.

The budget proposal for the Pentagon would provide for a hike in spending on weapons, research and maintenance, which had been scaled back under automatic budget cuts in recent years, officials told AFP.

The B.O. regime, which is due to unveil its budget request on Monday, will seek a base defense budget in fiscal year 2016 of $534.3 billion along with $50.9 billion for the wars in Afghanistan and against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group in Iraq and Syria, a defense official said.

The request would invest $107.7 billion in weapons programs, an increase of $14.1 billion over the previous year, and provide $69.8 billion for research and development, up $6.3 billion from the last budget, the official said.

The spending request would fund a major expansion for the F-35 fighter jet, allowing for the purchase of 57 of the radar-evading aircraft, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The proposed budget would also set aside $209.8 billion for operations and maintenance, an account that absorbed major reductions under the automatic cuts two years ago.

But for the boost in military spending to be approved, Congress will have to cut a deal to stave off mandatory budget cuts that would limit defense funding to about $500 billion.

The proposed defense budget surpasses those mandatory spending limits by about $35 billion, and would mark a $38 billion increase from military spending this fiscal year.

Any military spending beyond caps set under the Budget Control Act will set off across-the-board cuts that do not take into account strategic priorities.

When the automatic cuts were triggered in 2013, the Pentagon had to place some employees on unpaid leave while slashing funding for maintenance and training.

Top commanders on Wednesday renewed warnings to politicians that a repeat of the automatic cuts, known as sequestration, would result in a "hollow force" and have a damaging effect on readiness, modernization plans and morale.

To offset spending increases, the Pentagon budget calls for saving money by increasing some fees for the military's health care service while slowing the growth of housing allowances and other benefits, officials said.

The administration's budget request, with its proposed boost for the military, could put Republicans in Congress in a difficult position, analysts say.

With a majority in both the House and the Senate, most Republican politicians are sympathetic to increasing the defense budget. But to make that happen, they would have to dismantle the mandatory budget limits, potentially opening the way to spending increases on domestic programs -- something they fiercely oppose.

Twitter Terror: Online Threats Against Flights Continue
Prob'ly kids having fun playing at being keyboard jihadis, but such things cannot be permitted. Find them, convict them, and send them to jail for five years apiece or so.
[NBCNews] For the fourth day in a row, an online threat was made against an aircraft, authorities said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said a flight from Los Angeles International Airport to O'Hare International Airport in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
received an online threat early Tuesday afternoon. Like threats made earlier this week, the threat pertained to a "bomb" being on board. The FBI did not immediately identify the flight.

Passengers and luggage were screened upon arrival in Chicago and no bomb was found. More Twitter threats against other flights were made later Tuesday, with a user tweeting to Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and American Airlines saying that a bomb was aboard planes. No flight disruptions had been announced.

The user's account was quickly suspended. Two of the flights mentioned by that user landed safely as scheduled shortly after the threats were posted, others were en route, two had already landed hours earlier and another had not yet departed the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
On Saturday, two planes were escorted by fighter jets to Atlanta's airport after bomb threats were made via Twitter. A day later, a Delta Air Lines jet from Los Angeles to Orlando was diverted to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport after a threat was made on Twitter.

On Monday, several bomb threats targeting Southwestern flights popped up on Twitter, but no flight disruptions were announced, NBC San Diego reported. Another bomb threat was made against a Southwest plane in San Diego Tuesday morning, but no passengers were aboard and police later cleared the aircraft. It wasn't clear how that threat was made.

FBI officials have expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
regarding the increase in online threats that now number more than a dozen overall. "All threats are taken seriously and will be investigated," The FBI said in a statement.

Target terrorist sanctuaries inside Pakistan, Ex-US General says
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A former top American General has called for targeting the "terrorist sanctuaries" inside the Pak soil including those of the Haqqani terrorist network.

Speaking to the members of the Senate Armed Committee during a Congressional hearing, Gen. (rtd) John M Keane said "We have got to step up to what two (US) Presidents have failed to do and that is deal with these sanctuaries in Pakistain from which intelligence, support and training for operations inside Afghanistan comes."

He said "This is Afghan-Taliban sanctuaries in Pakistain and specifically the Haqqani Network should be targeted just like Al Qaeda. In targeting them we will disrupt it, disrupt their command and control and disrupt their operations. Then we begin to have a chance."

Haqqani network was formed in the late 1970s by Jalaluddin Haqqani. The group is allied with al-Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban and cooperates with other terrorist organizations in the region.

and confesses to his involvement in the murders of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
University dean of Islamic Studies Prof Dr Shakeel Auj and Prof Syed Sibte Jafar and an armed attack on Rangers personnel, according to Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo.

"Police have arrested Mohammed Mansur, who says he belongs to the MQM," said Mr Thebo at a presser at the CPO here on Wednesday.

Four other suspects including Fahim Jabalpuri and Ehtasham were absconders in the case, he said.

"Prof Auj's murder was not related to sectarianism," said the Karachi police chief. At the outset of the investigation police had interrogated Prof Auj's colleagues some of whom were behind a blasphemy charge campaign after which the late professor lodged a case at the Mobina Town cop shoppe.

Prof Auj had received threatening messages before he was bumped off on main University Road at the Nipa bridge in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Sept 18, 2014, while he was on his way to attend a ceremony at the Iranian Cultural Centre, Clifton, in a friend's car.

Dr Amna Afrin, student of the late professor, was hurt in the attack.

In the course of interrogation, the suspect also confessed to his involvement in the murder of Prof Syed Sibte Jafar who had been bumped off in Liaquatabad on March 17, 2013, said Mr Thebo.

The suspect also killed three workers of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi in 1993 and was "also involved in an armed attack on Rangers personnel in New Town on Sept 10, 2014," said the city police chief.

He said the suspect also worked as a ward boy at the Sindh Government Hospital in Liaquatabad.

'Illegal mosques, madressahs caused Rs1.1 billion loss'
[DAWN] The illegal construction of madressahs and mosques in Islamabad caused a loss of Rs1.1 billion to the public exchequer.

This was disclosed in an audit report of financial affairs of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for the fiscal year 2012-2013 during the meeting of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Wednesday.

Audit says over 300 mosques and madressahs were illegally constructed on CDA land
According to the report, “about 305 mosques/madressahs had been illegally constructed on CDA land in various sectors of Islamabad.” The audit further observed that 69 madressahs/mosques had encroached upon, on average, 100 square yards each.

The audit report observed that it is the CDA’s responsibility to guard its land against encroachers and take possession of land forcefully by removing encroachers and when necessary demolishing the illegally-constructed buildings on the land.

The office of the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) estimated that “this resulted in a loss of Rs1.12 billion”.

PAC chairman Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah referred this para to Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC) for deliberations.

After the audit authorities read out the said objection, the PAC chairman Shah said: “It is appropriate to refer this matter to DAC for action.”

Musharraf blames Kayani for delay in action against Taliban
[DAWN] Former army chief retired Gen Pervez Musharraf believes that one of the reasons why the country’s security challenges have become almost insurmountable now is because his successor, retired Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, was too scared to take action against militants.

In an interview with Dawn on Tuesday, Gen Musharraf said that it was Gen Kayani’s own reluctance — and not poor judgement — that caused him to not launch an operation against the Taliban.

Concerns to be raised about Indian hand in terrorism
[DAWN] The government has decided to take a tougher approach towards India and forcefully raise its concerns over alleged Indian involvement in acts of terrorism in Pakistain.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a textbook case of projection. Do all of pages 145-150 for homework -- there will be a quiz next class.
Successive governments in Pakistain always pointed to the Indian hand in terrorism, more particularly in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
and tribal areas, but did not disclose specific information about the alleged role. That, a senior national security official said, would not be the case any more.

The security official, who requested anonymity, said: "Terrorism allegedly patronised by India is a major concern for us and we want the Indian government to address that."

The report about the government's change in tack with India vis-à-vis terrorism was shared with Dawn as Pakistain's High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
for consultations on the way forward in the stalemated ties with Delhi.

Pakistain's reaction to the India-US joint statement issued after President Barak Obama's visit bore the signs of changing strategy.

Adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
has in a statement mentioned terrorism "sponsored and supported from abroad" and Islamabad's expectation from others to show the same commitment as Pakistain had demonstrated in the global war on terrorism. India was not named, but there were little doubts, who was being alluded to.

The Pakistain government recently shared a 'dossier' with the US on the Indian involvement in terrorist acts here. The security official said it included some strong evidence of the Indian involvement in Dec 16 Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
school carnage which left 149 schoolchildren and teachers dead.

The attack was claimed by the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP).

The government has been particularly uneasy over Delhi's continued terrorism allegations to undermine its counter-terrorism efforts.

Worrying as it has been for Pakistain, Indian allegations have found receptive ears in Washington.

Before embarking on India visit, President B.O. had said in an interview that "safe havens within Pakistain were not acceptable". And the joint statement issued at the conclusion of the presidential visit called on Islamabad to "bring the perpetrators of the November 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai to justice".

The security official said that the new strategy on India was meant to counter the narrative that India was a victim of Pakistain-sponsored terrorism.

Syria Talks Start in Moscow as West's Approach Alters
[AnNahar] Syrian opposition figures and representatives of the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
began talks in Moscow Wednesday but there was little hope that they would make a breakthrough in ending the country's brutal war.

The talks between opposition groups tolerated by Damascus and a Syrian delegation led by ambassador to the United Nations

group around Kobane, after expelling them from the strategic town on the Turkish border.

The rise of Islamic State -- which was threatening Wednesday to execute a Japanese hostage and a captured Jordanian airforce pilot -- has changed the West's approach to Syria and spurred hope that the warring sides might find common ground in the face of a mutual foe.

But expectations are low for the Moscow-sponsored talks -- aimed at restarting long-stalled peace negotiations to wind down the nearly four-year civil war -- as the main opposition group, the exiled National Coalition, has refused to attend.

The leading internationally-recognized opponents of Assad have stayed away, arguing that Russia -- Assad's most powerful remaining ally -- cannot be an honest broker.

The Syrian government delegation joined the closed-door Moscow talks after Assad's opponents held a series of meetings on Monday and Tuesday to thrash out a common platform.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov -- who has said that the Moscow encounter should lay the groundwork for future U.N.-mediated talks -- was set to meet the Syrian delegations later in the day.

Two previous rounds of talks in Geneva ended without success.

An opposition source at the meeting told AFP that the 32 opposition representatives attending were putting forward a "ten-point list" aimed at defusing a civil war that has claimed more than 200,000 lives since 2011.

Key priorities include calls to end bombing campaigns, freeing political prisoners, and establishing "mechanisms for the delivery of humanitarian aid".

The source said that the opposition figures would not immediately insist on establishing a transitional government to ease Assad from power.

"These first discussions are only the start of a long process," the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
over fears of derailing the sensitive encounter.

Assad himself has played down expectations for the meeting, calling into doubt the legitimacy of some of the opposition involved.

The United States has given its backing to the talks in Moscow amid signs that Washington may be recalibrating its Syria policy to focus on the Islamic State jihadist group, which has taken control of swaths of Iraq and Syria, rather than Assad's exit.

Iran, Europe Negotiators to Meet Thursday in Istanbul
Dragging it out until Iran achieves a working nuclear device, and President Obama achieves his legacy.
[AnNahar] Iranian officials will meet with European members of the P5+1 group in Istanbul on Thursday under the ongoing diplomatic effort to secure a deal over Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

The meeting with British, French and German diplomats was announced by Iran's foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham during a weekly press briefing in Tehran.

The EU, which has chaired the P5+1 talks, said separately that its political director Helga Schmid would also attend.

Under an interim agreement, representatives of the P5+1 (United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany) and Iran gave themselves until March 31 to reach a political deal.

The two parties are seeking a comprehensive accord by a June 30 deadline. Two such deadlines were missed last year and both sides have admitted that big differences remain on the hard detail of what the final pact would look like.

Afkham told reporters there could be meetings with P5+1 members at a security conference in Munich next month, where Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is already scheduled to meet U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

Under an interim deal, Iran's stock of fissile material has been diluted from 20 percent enriched uranium to five percent in exchange for limited sanctions relief.

Experts say such measures pushed back the "breakout capacity" to make an atomic weapon, which Iran denies pursuing.

Tehran insists its nuclear program is for domestic energy production and that it needs to increase its enrichment capacity to make fuel for a fleet of power reactors that it is yet to build.

World powers, however, are skeptical about why Iran needs such a large enrichment capability, and U.N. atomic inspectors say Tehran has not yet fully addressed questions about past nuclear activities.

Zarif meanwhile was quoted by an Iranian newspaper Wednesday as saying there was a "general agreement that Iran could have a nuclear enrichment program, no sites will be closed and sanctions should be lifted".

"But the discussions are continuing on the level of enrichment, on when Iran will begin industrial scale enrichment and how nuclear research and development will be done," he told Etemad daily.

The future of a heavy water reactor at Arak in central Iran is also to be resolved, Zarif added.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
State Department-Funded Group Bankrolling Anti-Bibi Campaign
A U.S. State Department-funded group is financing an Israeli campaign to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and has hired former Obama aides to help with its grassroots organizing efforts.
It's okay when Champ does it...
U.S.-based activist group OneVoice International has partnered with V15, an “independent grassroots movement” in Israel that is actively opposing Netanyahu’s party in the upcoming elections, Ha'aretz reported on Monday. Former national field director for President Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign Jeremy Bird is also reportedly involved in the effort.

OneVoice development and grants officer Christina Taler said the group would be working with V15 on voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts but would not engage in overtly partisan activities. She said OneVoice and V15 are still formalizing the partnership. While V15 has not endorsed any particular candidates, it is working to oppose Netanyahu in the March elections.

“We’ve formed a partnership with [V15], but it’s important to know we’re absolutely nonpartisan,” Taler told the Washington Free Beacon. “Our biggest emphasis and focus right now is just getting people out to vote.”

OneVoice said in a press release on Tuesday that it is teaming up with V15 because Israel “need[s] a prime minister and a government who will be responsive to the people.”

OneVoice International received two grants from the U.S. State Department over the past year, and lists the agency as a “partner” on its website. Taler said the group is not using this money for its Israeli election-related efforts.

“No government funding has gone toward any of the activities we’re doing right now whatsoever,” she said.
"Why don't you believe us," she whined further...
Taler said the group used the State Department grants to “build public campaign support for the [Israeli-Palestinian] negotiations” spearheaded by Secretary of State John Kerry last spring.
Which is completely non-political, anyone can see that...
OneVoice also recently hired Bird’s consulting firm 270 Strategies to “inform us better as a grassroots-organizing model.”

Ha’aretz reported that Bird will work with the V15 campaign from an office in Tel Aviv.

OneVoice says it works to represent moderate Palestinian and Israeli viewpoints. Last August it sponsored an “Abbas not Hamas” campaign in support of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whose government has encouraged attacks against Israelis. Abbas’ son Yasser Mahmoud Abbas sits on the group’s advisory board.

Democrats have blasted the House GOP for inviting Netanyahu to speak to Congress in March, claiming that Republicans are trying to give him a boost in the Israeli elections.

Bird suggested this week that the invitation to Netanyahu was related to Jewish Republican donors.

“What do you think Adelson promised GOP in exchange for this insane BiBi House visit?” Bird wrote on Twitter. “Blatant attempt to bolster Israeli PM before elections.”

This New Iranian-Built Anti-Tank Missile Could Limit Israel's Options Against Hezbollah
Whether the Dehlaviyeh has the high level of operability that PressTV boasted of two years earlier is unclear. But if today's attack does turn out to have involved a Dehlaviyeh rather than a Russian Korenet, it means that Hezbollah can supplement its most effective battlefield tactic with an even more advanced anti-tank system.

This may end up dictating Israel's options in how it will respond to Hezbollah's attack. The Dehlaviyeh potentially raises the cost of a ground incursion. Even if it wasn't used in today's attacks, Iran has been ferrying weaponry to the Assad regime and its allies during the country's civil war. And at least some of it has ended up in Hezbollah's hands.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hezbollah attack, severe blow to Israel: Analyst
[Iran Press TV] Press TV has conducted an interview with Jamal Wakim, professor at the Lebanese International University from Beirut, to discuss a retaliatory missile attack by the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah on an Israeli convoy in the northern occupied territories.

Wakim said the attack, which killed two Israeli troops and injured eight more, was the best retaliation against the recent Israeli assault on Hezbollah fighters in Syria. He added that it was a severe blow to the Israelis, mainly to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is preparing for the upcoming elections in Israel.
That certainly is one view on events.

As an aside, Ynet points out:
IDF confirms: Hezbollah launched 6 missiles - 3 hit IDF convoy, 1 hit home in Ghajar
They can be proud they have somewhat better stats than the Gazans -- 50% hit the target, and presumably only a third missed Israel altogether.

Report: ISIL to Appoint Asir as Emir of Lebanon after Declaring Lebanon Emirate
[AnNahar] Fugitive Salafist holy man Ahmed al-Asir
...Leb Salafist holy man with the usual grouch against Shiites. Currently on the run, he seems intent on reigniting the Leb civil war...
will be appointed as the Emir of Leb by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a report published in al-Joumhouria newspaper said on Wednesday.

The daily said that ISIL will "soon" proclaim the establishment of an Islamic Emirate in Leb and appoint Asir as its head.
Soon. Is that like, "Soon ISIS will conquer Kobane?"
According to the newspaper, the Death Eater group is planning for military and security operations in Leb and reevaluating its stances.

ISIL reportedly asked for backup from jihadists in northern Syria to help it in achieving its goals in Leb.

Asir has been allegedly taking refuge at the southern Paleostinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hellhole since 2013 when his group engaged in bloody festivities with the Lebanese army in the southern city of Sidon.

Sidon's festivities were seen to be linked to the conflict in Syria, and have resulted in the death of at least 16 troops.

Judicial authorities have issued a detention order for Asir and 123 of his supporters, including Singer turned runaway Islamist Fadel Shaker, whose brother was killed in the festivities with the army in Sidon.

Jihadists from al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...

Terror Networks
Women Joining IS Militants 'Cheerleaders, Not Victims'
Women's lib, jihadi style.
[AnNahar] Western women who join Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Death Eaters are driven by the same ideological passion as many male recruits and should be seen as potentially dangerous cheerleaders, not victims, experts said Wednesday.

A new study from the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) said the estimated 550 women who have traveled to Iraq and Syria are expected to marry, keep house and bear children.

But despite being banned from fighting, many are active propagandists for the cause on social media, celebrating the brutal violence of IS holy warriors, acting as recruiting sergeants and even encouraging attacks abroad.

"The violent language and dedication to the cause is as strong as we find in some of the men," said co-author Ross Frenett, an extremism expert.

"The worry is that as ISIS (the IS group) loses ground, as everyone hopes it does, that more and more of these women will transfer from the domestic world they're in now to a more violent one," he told AFP.

Much has been written about young women going to become "jihadist brides", but the prevailing narrative of wide-eyed recruits drawn by a sense of excitement belies the importance of their own faith and passions.

The ISD researchers have been monitoring hundreds of women on social media, but focused for the study on 12 women from Austria, Britannia, Canada, La Belle France and the Netherlands who are living with the IS group in Iraq and Syria.

Some of the women endorsed the bloody beheadings carried out by the Death Eaters -- "I wish I did" it, one said after U.S. journalist Steven Sotloff was killed -- as well as railing against Western governments and the suffering of Moslems.

"My best friend is my grenade... It's an American one too. May Allah allow me to kill their Kanzeer (pig) soldiers with their own weapons," one said.

Crucially, the women also provide advice and encouragement to other women thinking of joining.

"They're actively recruiting women and providing them with assistance advice and referrals to go to ISIS-held territory," said Frenett.

"And they are acting as cheerleaders for terrorist attacks back home."

"There has been this gender blind spot where we see women as victims rather than as potential terrorists," said Jayne Huckerby, associate professor at Duke University School of Law who specializes in women and counter-extremism.

"Policy makers have overlooked and underrated female terrorism both in terms of motivations for going and the roles that are played there."

She said many women were driven to leave Western countries because of alienation and restrictions on their freedom to practice their faith, and drawn to the IS group by a sense of adventure and enthusiasm for a new Islamic utopia.

Their key role, aside from being wives and mothers, is to paint a picture to the outside world of daily life under the holy warriors, through postings on social media that intersperse violent videos with photos of their cooking.

"They're very important in terms of re-branding ISIS as less of a terror group and more of a state building exercise," Huckerby told AFP.

She noted that many were also willing to fight, a point also made by Melanie Smith, of the International Center for the Study of Radicalization (ICSR) at King's College London.

Smith, who maintains a database of about 70 female IS members, said British women are inciting attacks by suggesting them to people who could not travel to Iraq and Syria.

"You can see women online being frustrated about the fact they can't fight and they suggest to each other that they could do something else," she told The Observer newspaper.

Despite their passion, many of the women appear to find it difficult to leave their families behind, a factor which could be key to keeping them at home.

Frenett said the authorities should better support relatives, and also provide a way out for the women if they become disillusioned.

"There needs to be a path available to them when they come home," he said.

Perhaps they should live with their decisions, no matter how poorly thought out. Nonsense to think you can be treasonous and then go back home as if all is well (just because Hanoi Jane got away with it...)

Alleged American ISIS Commander Abu Muhammad Al-Amriki Killed: Reports
[NBCNews] An ISIS commander who claims to have lived in the U.S. has been killed, according to jihadis in the Middle East.

Abu Muhammad Al-Amriki, who gained notoriety last February when he appeared in a video blasting al-Qaeda's Syria branch, Jabhat al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
, was a high-ranking figure within ISIS. The name "Al-Amriki" means "American."

While reports of his death have circulated before, the latest claim is considered "far more reliable" because it originated from jihadis "familiar with ISIS activities in Syria and Iraq" themselves, global security firm and NBC News counterterrorism consultant Flashpoint Intelligence said. NBC News could not independently verify the reports.

Al-Amriki claimed to be an American but it was not clear if he was actually a U.S. citizen. "Al-Amriki has a heavy accent when speaking English and might have only spent a short amount of time in the U.S. or migrated there at an older age," Flashpoint noted, adding that he "rose up the ranks of the group very quickly."

It was not immediately clear when or where he died.
It's all awfully vague. But now we know that possibly something happened somewhere.
In September, the FBI's director said that U.S. believes there are about a dozen Americans fighting alongside murderous Moslem groups in Syria.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Brooklyn imam repudiates ‘cancer’ of radical Islam
[IsraelTimes] Tareq Yusef Al-Masri calls on believers to purge themselves of 'Salafist ideology,' combat terrorism, and practice kindness
I have to wonder if the gentleman is Ahmadi. Whenever a Muslim says something peaceful and loving toward the generality of mankind, or against bloody jihad, it invariably turns out that the speaker is not a member of one of Islam's mainstream sects, but rather Ahmadi. The Druze say such things, too, but they don't claim to speak as Muslims, as far as I am aware.
In startling remarks in Arabic posted online in the wake of the deadly Gay Paree terror attacks earlier this month, a Brooklyn-based imam called on fellow Moslems to rid themselves of Death Eater ideology and hatred toward other religious groups, while denouncing terrorist acts committed in the name of Islam.

The footage, posted on January 9 and translated into English by the Washington DC-based Middle East Media Research Institute, shows imam Tareq Yusef Al-Masri delivering a sermon before followers at the Oulel-Albab Mosque in Brooklyn NY.

Responding to the deadly terror attack at the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
offices in Gay Paree on January 7 that left 12 dead, Al-Masri called on fellow Moslems to confront intolerance and hatred of the West brought about by radical "all-destructive" fundamentalist ideologies -- ostensibly in the name of Islam.

"Let us admit without lying to ourselves, that we the Moslems are time bombs. When I say 'we the Moslems,' I do not mean every single Moslem, but Moslems of the religious sector are time bombs," Al-Masri said.

"For a sinner to repent, the first thing he does is make a bomb. He blows it up and kills people. We must admit this," he said. "If you have cancer, it won't help you if I tell you that you have the flu. I must tell you clearly that you have cancer. Everything comes from Allah, but this should not prevent us from studying the underlying reasons of this cancer [among us]."

Al-Masri claimed that Salafist ideology was largely responsible for the animus that has gripped the Moslem world in recent years, and accused renegade holy mans of hijacking the true message of the Koran and peddling an extreme version of Islam incompatible with Western culture.

"Who instilled so much hatred in this generation? It is the ideology of [Salafist preachers]," Al-Masri said. "The majority of us Moslems hate Christians -- when you see how many people oppose [greeting Christians] you have to admit that a deep-rooted hatred dwells in the heart of the Moslems. [Radical holy mans] are responsible for instilling [this] hatred."

"When we tell people that it is forbidden to wish a Christian 'Merry Christmas,' does this not lay the foundation of terrorism? This is how you condition yourself to feel hatred," he added. "The truth of the Koran has been distorted by scholars who corrupt the youth."

Promoting a message of acceptance and conciliation, Al-Masri exhorted followers to gaze inward and discard the messages of violence espoused by radical holy mans.

"These scholars consider any verse that calls to treat people with kindness to have been abrogated. All that remains valid is 'Kill! Slaughter!' Is that the only thing that God tells us?" he asked. "They have made the Moslems hate everyone: the Christians, the Jews, the atheists, and all human beings.

"I am ashamed of the rotten and despicable conduct of the Moslems," he added. "Do you want other people to join Islam while you hate them and curse them day and night?"
