Afghanistan
U.S. to keep 9800 troops in Afghanistan through end of year, Taliban displeased
U.S. President Barack Obama
Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though....
on Tuesday reversed plans to withdraw around 5,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan this year, an overture to the country's new reform-minded leader, President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
Hosting Ghani at the White House for their first presidential head-to-head, Obama agreed to keep the current level of 9,800 U.S. troops in Afghanistan until the end of 2015.

"Obama's announcement to continue to keep troops in Afghanistan is a response to the peace efforts," Taliban front man Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP. "This damages all the prospects for peace. This means the war will go on until they are defeated."

Hours later, a suicide boom-mobileer struck close to the presidential palace in Kabul on Wednesday, killing at least seven people and wounding dozens more.

Since coming to power in September after protracted power-sharing negotiations, Ghani has sought to establish a grinding of the peace processor with the Taliban to end their 13-year insurgency.

Supportive signals from Pakistain, which has long held significant influence over the Taliban, have boosted hopes for possible dialogue.

The Taliban, who have waged a bloody insurgency since being toppled from power in 2001 in a U.S.-led invasion, have always denied talks with the government.

They maintain they will not negotiate while foreign troops remain on Afghan soil.

NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
's combat mission ended in December, leaving the 350,000-strong Afghan cops to lead the fight against the Taliban.

The decision means they will have air and other crucial U.S. support through this year's fighting season, which begins in weeks.

But the bully boyz voiced defiance.

"When there were more than 100,000 troops on the ground, they could not beat us -- now with 10,000 they cannot do anything," Mujahid said.

The U.S. still plans to reduce its military contingent in Afghanistan to a "Kabul-based embassy presence" by the end of 2016, but the rate at which troops will pull out during that year has yet to be decided, Obama and Ghani said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

Obama said Afghanistan remains a "dangerous place," but insisted the decision to maintain higher troop numbers for longer was not a change in his policy of ending America's frontline involvement soon.

There have been fears that without the military muscle of the U.S. and NATO allies behind them, Afghan forces could struggle to quell a still-resilient Taliban insurgency.

The Pentagon insists Afghan forces are holding their own in the fight, but senior U.S. officers have voiced concern that they are suffering casualties at an "unsustainable" rate.

The number of civilians killed and maimed in Afghanistan jumped 22 percent in 2014, the United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
said last month, as NATO troops withdrew from combat.

There is also mounting concern about the possible influence of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. jihadists.

The Middle East-based group has not formally confirmed it is operating out of Afghanistan, though some Pak and Afghan commanders have pledged allegiance in recent months.

Protests for slain Afghan woman continue to grow
[AA.TR] The face of Farkhunda, a 27-year old woman killed by a mob last week, decorated the masks worn by some of the 2,000 Afghans who protested against her murder on Tuesday.

The demonstrations against her death, sparked by false accusations of her burning a copy of the Koran, have begun to grow into a movement against conservative representations of Islam within Afghanistan.

Angered women, joined by male protesters and civil society activists, braved heavy rain and the fear of an attack on their protests to gather outside Afghanistan's Supreme Court and demand justice for Farkhunda.

Ghani Thanks Americans For Sacrifice, Warns About Islamic State
[RFERL.ORG] Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
has thanked the United States for its involvement in what has become the longest foreign war in U.S. history.

"We owe a profound debt to the 2,315 servicemen and women killed and the more than 20,000 who have been maimed in service to your country and ours," he said, speaking in front of a joint session of the U.S. Congress on March 25.
This is a speech Karzai never would have made.
The White House had announced the previous day that it would halt the drawdown of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, maintaining 9,800 troops through the end of 2015.

Ghani also thanked Washington for development aid and other civilian assistance to Afghanistan.

He also called the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (IS) group a "terrible threat" to the countries of Western and Central Asia, adding that IS fighters had already been sent to Afghanistan "to test for vulnerabilities."

Ghani said that such groups are looking for new havens.

He said that "terrorist movements whose goal is to destabilize every state in the region are looking for new bases of operation."

Ghani added that "We are the frontline, but the bandidos forces of Evil neither recognize boundaries nor require passports to spread their messages of hate and discord."

He said that "to date, Afghanistan's people have rejected the violent [IS] movement. We are willing to speak truth to terror."

Ghani vowed that Afghanistan will never again be a haven for Al-Qaeda or other terrorist groups.

Top Mubarak-era official freed
[ARABNEWS] A former interior minister under Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
was freed from jail on Wednesday after being cleared of graft charges, the state news agency reported, the latest bigwig of the old regime to be released.

While Egyptian courts have been gradually absolving Mubarak-era figures, they have been handing down lengthy sentences to liberal and conservative activists in cases ranging from political protests to acts of violence.

A court last week acquitted the former minister, Habib Al-Adly, of charges of illegal profiting and squandering 181 million Egyptian pounds ($23.72 million) of public funds.

Adly, 77, a onetime head of Egypt's feared internal security apparatus, was also acquitted last month in a separate graft case along with former prime minister Ahmed Nazif.

Last year a court acquitted Adly, along with Mubarak and six aides, of charges related to the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising which led to their downfall.

Morsi's trial over espionage charges postponed to March 26
[Iran Press TV] A court in Egypt has adjourned the trial of the country's first democratically-elected president, Mohammed Morsi, on charges of endangering national security by leaking state secrets to Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
.

On Wednesday, the Cairo criminal court postponed the hearing of Morsi and 10 other Moslem Brüderbund defendants on charges of espionage and leaking classified documents to the Qatari intelligence and Aljazeera news network to March 26.

The documents that the court accuses Morsi of leaking to Qatar allegedly include information on Egypt's army, military dispositions and armaments, as well as additional information on the country's domestic and foreign policies.

Last September, Attorney General Hesham Barakat ordered the defendants to be referred to the court following investigations by the Supreme State Security Prosecution.

Among the defendants are the former head of Morsi's office, Ahmed Abdel-Ati, and secretary Ameen al-Serafi, along with journalists from Arabic-language Aljazeera news network and Moslem Brüderbund's Misr 25 satellite channel. They will be sentenced to death if found guilty.

Africa Subsaharan
Nigeria Denies Reports of New Mass Boko Haram Kidnapping
[AnNahar] Nigeria's government on Wednesday denied reports of a mass kidnapping in the country's northeast, as Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
murderous Moslems flee a four-nation military offensive.

"There is no fresh kidnapping in Damasak," Nigeria's national security front man Mike Omeri told Agence La Belle France-Presse, referring to the town recently retaken by forces from neighboring Chad and Niger.

Reports suggested that the Islamist holy warriors, who seized the town in Borno state earlier this year, made off with hundreds of children as they fled the troops' advance.

But Omeri said Nigeria had no information about a mass abduction. A senator who represents the area and a senior intelligence source also cast doubt on the reports.

The contradictory claims shed light on the difficulty of establishing facts in the brutal, six-year conflict, with communications infrastructure devastated in the northeast and travel restricted. Officials, the military and locals frequently give contrasting information.

The murderous Moslems do have a track record of mass kidnappings, however, including the high-profile abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls in April last year from the Borno town of Chibok. Details about the kidnapping were muddied for weeks by military and official denials of details reported by the affected families. The disputes over what actually happened were finally laid to rest when Boko Haram released a video picturing dozens of the hostages, who were subsequently identified by relatives.

Omeri noted Boko Haram's widely reported tactic of forcibly conscripting young boys during their hit-and-run attacks and attempts to indoctrinate them into the group's radical ideology.

Many Boko Haram fighters are believed to be on the run as a result of the offensive by Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, who have routed the bully boyz from dozens of towns.

Several sources said it was possible, and perhaps even likely, that scores of Boko Haram conscripts were missing, feared kidnapped by the murderous Moslems across the region. But they denied a specific mass abduction in Damasak, where the Chadian military last week said that about 100 bodies, some of them decapitated, were found in a mass grave.

Senator Maina Lawan, whose constituency includes Damasak, said: "I will be extremely surprised that such a huge number of my constituents would be kidnapped without me being informed.

"It is very unlikely that Boko Haram would have kidnapped such a huge number of people from Damasak because most of the people had fled months ago when Boko Haram took over‎."

A senior intelligence source in Borno's capital Maiduguri said there was "no iota of truth" to the mass abduction claims.

Boko Haram: 'Shekau is alive, he still preaches in Gwoza' -- Female escapee

captivity in Gwoza town of Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State has said the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau, is still alive.

She told newsmen in Maiduguri yesterday that Shekau, " is alive and healthy" and often preaches in Gwoza township.

According to the woman, before their escape from the den of the terrorists, they witnessed the killings of 75 elders of Gwoza, including her father in-law, who were hanged and their bodies left on the streets of Gwoza.

"My husband is alive, he had run away since the early days of the invasion and he is currently here in Maiduguri.

"We were captured since then by the Boko Haram and have remained in their custody for more than three months before now.

"When we escaped, we travelled by night in the bushes until we arrived at Michika.

us at Michika said we were Boko Haram's wives, but we pleaded and having proven our innocence, they kept us for days until when the former governor of Adamawa State, Mr Boni Haruna, came to Michika.

"It was he who offered to help us with food and medication. When we regained our strength, he asked us many questions.

"It was during the questioning that I mentioned my husband brother's name who is living in Adamawa and they sent for him. After he had identified me, they released me to him, before I later came to Maiduguri to unite with my family," she said.

Lakhvi files another petition challenging detention order
[DAWN] One of the key accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi has filed another petition with the Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging the detention order against him.
They want to let him out but they're gonna take a lot of heat for it. They're shopping for a judge who'll do it.
He adopted the stance that the Home Secretary should be advised to handle his case and said that detaining him is illegal and amounts to contempt of the ruling issued earlier by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

LHC officials forwarded the request for a hearing to the Chief Justice LHC.

The LHC had, last Friday, rejected Lakhvi's previous petition challenging the detention order against him.

Justice Mahmood Maqbool Bajwa had said after last week's hearing that in light of recent circumstances, it was possible that Lakhvi's release could cause turmoil in the country.

On Mar 13, the third-time detention orders on Lakhvi were declared void by the IHC ─ a day after which the Punjab

tendered their resignations with political shura.

In a statement issued to media on Wednesday, TTP Jamat-ul-Ahrar asserted that the outfit's political shura accepted the resignations and has appointed commander Asad Afridi as Jamat-ul-Ahrar's acting Ameer.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
US Declassifies Document Revealing Israel's Nuclear Program
In a development that has largely been missed by mainstream media, the Pentagon early last month quietly declassified a Department of Defense top-secret document detailing Israel's nuclear program, a highly covert topic that Israel has never formally announced to avoid a regional nuclear arms race, and which the US until now has respected by remaining silent.

But by publishing the declassified document from 1987, the US reportedly breached the silent agreement to keep quiet on Israel's nuclear powers for the first time ever, detailing the nuclear program in great depth.

The timing of the revelation is highly suspect, given that it came as tensions spiraled out of control between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama ahead of Netanyahu's March 3 address in Congress, in which he warned against the dangers of Iran's nuclear program and how the deal being formed on that program leaves the Islamic regime with nuclear breakout capabilities.

Another highly suspicious aspect of the document is that while the Pentagon saw fit to declassify sections on Israel's sensitive nuclear program, it kept sections on Italy, France, West Germany and other NATO countries classified, with those sections blocked out in the document.

First thing I saw when I looked at Drudge this morning. Our Champ really is having himself a hissy fit.

#1  He must think he's still in Chicago, where (the mayor) King Richard the First (about 1970) told the press, "Yeah, I gave the insurance contract to my son's firm; what are fathers for?"

I heard it on the radio, I kid you not. And the outrage last for all of 30 .... seconds.

#4  Th 1987 document was released to the public. Certainly the US knows much, much more about Israel's nuclear program.

Israel must reasonably assume that the US will share all intelligence on Israel with Iran.

Btw if Israel should be in possession of the Khalidi tape, now would be a good time for a leak.

#7  The Weekly Standard reported: The Pentagon’s February declassification coincided with intense pressure on the Netanyahu government by the Obama administration, trying to force the Israeli prime minister to cancel a planned speech to Congress questioning the wisdom of a highly risky nuclear deal with the Iranian regime.

Pure and simple blackmail.

#9  I look forward to 21 months of revelations that are about to roll out about the machinations of the Obama administration that will keep Drudge and other means of information (not to be confused with the Permanent Party Propaganda Machine) more than busy. Israel is not going to die for Obama, but I suspect that someone's legacy is certainly going to be in the dustbins of history.

Police: Syria Returnees Likely behind Indonesia Chlorine Bomb
[AnNahar] Indonesian bandidos snuffies believed to have returned from fighting with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group in Syria are suspected of being behind an attempted chlorine kaboom in a shopping mall last month, police said Wednesday.

The homemade device -- made up of several bottles and a detonator -- was discovered in the mall south of Jakarta after it failed to go off properly. Police said it was the first such attack ever attempted in Indonesia.

National Police Inspector General, Tito Karnavian, said the use of the chlorine resembled tactics employed by IS jihadists, who have taken over a vast swathe of territory in Syria and Iraq.

"It really surprised us," said the former commander of the police's elite counter-terror unit.

"This is a signature of ISIS," he added, referring to the jihadists by an alternative name. "It is connected to a group likely already returned from Syria."

He said police were pursuing "very good leads" into the bomb attempt but would not reveal further details. Exposure to chlorine gas causes intense irritation to the eyes, skin and airways, and can be deadly.

IS has been accused of using chlorine, notably in a January 23 car kaboom on Kurdish forces in Iraq. The Syrian regime has also been accused of carrying out chlorine gas attacks.

Indonesia, a hotbed of murderous Moslem violence in the past, has largely dismantled the Islamic Lion of Islam networks responsible for a string of deadly attacks throughout the country in the early 2000s.

But the rise of IS poses a new threat, with nearly 160 Indonesians confirmed by police as having left to join IS, and authorities worried about the potential for Death Eaters to revive murderous Moslem groups on their return.

Iran, Russia diplomats hold talks on situation in Yemen
[Iran Press TV] A high-ranking diplomat of Iran's Foreign Ministry has held talks with authorities in Moscow over the situation in Yemen.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Bogdanov, in the country's capital on Wednesday.

"During the discussion of the situation in the Republic of Yemen the common opinion was expressed about the need to settle the acute domestic crisis in that country on the basis of a broad national dialogue involving all influential political forces in Yemen," the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a report.

"Such a dialogue is meant to stabilize the situation in the country, preserve its territorial integrity and unity, find solutions of political and economic problems facing the Yemeni society acceptable for all sides, and prevent the transformation of the country into a new seat of international terrorism. Support was confirmed for corresponding efforts made by special adviser of the UN Secretary General for Yemen Jamal Benomar," it added.

The meeting was held as reports said Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi escaped the country on a boat from the southern port city of Aden where he was staying.

Meanwhile,

...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
