Tamarod co-founder detained for 15 days for joining 'outlawed group'
[Al Ahram] Egypt's State Security Prosecution ordered on Monday the detention of activist Moheb Doss, a leading member of the anti-Morsi Tamarod group, for 15 days pending investigation on charges of joining an "outlawed group."

Doss was placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
on 6 January in front of the Saint Mark Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo Abbasiya's district, where Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi was giving a speech during the Coptic Christmas mass.

He has been accused of joining an outlawed group called 'January 25 Youth', his lawyer Mohammed Fadel told Ahram Online, saying the charges were false.

Doss was a leading member of the Tamarod campaign, which gathered milions of signatures in 2013 demanding that then-president Mohammed Morsi step down.

There have been several calls for anti-government protests on 25 January, the fifth anniversary of the uprising that toppled then-president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
. Protesting without prior police permission is banned in Egypt, under a law passed in 2013.

"The authorities don't have any evidence against him. He wasn't given the right to contact a lawyer, or even the right to be questioned by a normal prosecution, not a specialised one," Fadel added.

Arabia
Guantanamo Bay Detainee Repatriated to Saudi Arabia
[AnNahar] A Guantanamo Bay inmate has been repatriated to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the Pentagon announced Monday, bringing the remote military prison's remaining population down to 103.

Muhammed Abd Al Rahman Awn Al-Shamrani had spent 14 years in Guantanamo, where he was held without trial and was suspected of being an al-Qaeda member who "possibly" worked as the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now among the dear departed, though not among the dearest...
's bodyguard, according to his leaked prisoner file.

Al-Shimrani, 40, will participate in Saudi Arabia's reintegration and rehabilitation program, which includes support from family members.

"The United States is grateful to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility," the Pentagon said in a statement.

Pentagon front man Commander Gary Ross said al-Shamrani had arrived in Saudi Arabia earlier Monday.

Of the 103 remaining inmates, 44 have been approved for transfer, and the Pentagon is trying to find countries to take them.

Many are from Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and cannot go back, given its collapse into civil war.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter in December signed off on 17 of the 44 to be transferred as soon as this month, and three were released last week: two to Ghana and one to Kuwait.

Officials say a further flurry of releases is expected in the coming weeks.

Even if all 44 are released, the remaining inmates are expected to stay in indefinite detention.

Al-Shimrani had on previous occasions been deemed a potential ongoing threat to the United States.

"If released without rehabilitation, close supervision, and means to successfully reintegrate into his society as a law-abiding citizen, it is assessed detainee would immediately seek out prior associates and reengage in hostilities and krazed killer support activities at home and abroad," his October 2008 prisoner file states.

In July last year, his lawyer Martha Rayner told a military hearing that al-Shimrani's family had pledged to give him broad support.

"They will provide him with a home, support in establishing employment and beginning a family of his own," she wrote.

Europe
Cologne police blamed for New Year's Eve attacks
[Iran Press TV] Interior Minister of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region has blamed Cologne's Police Department for the disorder leading to the New Year's Eve attacks.
It wasn't the miscreants wot dunnit?
Pak and Syrian refugees were the victims of the attacks in the city on January 10.
Couldn't have been Pakistanis, that's not one of the listed refugee countries, as I recall.
Speaking in Dusseldorf on Monday, Ralf Jaeger said "police authorities should have called in more forces," adding that back-up forces were available on New Year's Eve.
But that would have required admitting that those people were causing trouble, not an admission that was permitted to be made.
Jaeger said new measures will be introduced "to eliminate drawbacks which have appeared to the current moment," adding that a new division will be set up for the "security of women" ahead of the upcoming carnival in Cologne.

Meanwhile,
...back at the cheese factory, there was only one thought in the mouse's mind: I can do this! I can do this! Then the trap sprung...
six Pak nationals were attacked on Sunday by about 20 people and two of them were briefly admitted to a hospital, police said. Also on Sunday evening, five people attacked a Syrian man, who was injured in the attack.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
's front man Steffen Seibert on Monday condemned the attacks on women in Cologne describing them as "intolerable." However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
he said "nothing excuses" retaliatory attacks on refugees.

Merkel has proposed facilitation to deport refugees involved in crimes. Her front man said the government is looking into both "possible consequences for criminal law (and) possible political consequences for the intolerable crimes."

Seibert said Germans must not blame all the nearly 1.1 million refugees who entered the country last year, and said the government is also focused on their welfare.

Europe's Values Shouldn't Be Discarded In Wake Of Migrants Influx, Pope Says
[NRTTV] Pope Francis warned on Monday (Jan. 11) that the recent influx of migrants and refugees risked overwhelming European values, but said he was confident that the continent could successfully open it's arms and integrate the newcomers.

In an annual address to diplomats at the Vatican City, the pope said the flood of new arrivals, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, was a major burden for Europe and had given rise to "significant" fears over security and international terrorism. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
Pope Francis stressed the need for Europe to maintain it's principles of humanity when dealing with the influx of migrants.

"The present wave of migration seems to be undermining the foundations of that "humanistic spirit" which Europe has always loved and defended. Yet there should be no loss of the values and principles of humanity, respect for the dignity of every person, subsidiarity and solidarity," he said.

Despite the "inevitable difficulties" in trying to absorb the migrants, who brought with them different cultures and traditions, the pope said he hoped European nations would prove capable of integrating and accepting the refugees.

"I wish, then, to reaffirm my conviction that Europe, aided by its great cultural and religious heritage, has the means to defend the centrality of the human person and to find the right balance between its twofold moral responsibility to protect the rights of its citizens and to ensure assistance and acceptance to migrants," he said in his 45-minute-long address which he made in Italian.

#2  A sadly accurate observation, newc. This pope I notice has recently changed his tune.

Still thinks and speaks Leftist like a native.

But like a certain Saul/Paul, the scales have fallen from his eyes, and he now truly understands the graveness of the situation.

Sadly, I think it is yet another case of "too little, far far too late."

Swedish police withheld reports of sexual assaults at music fest
[Al Ahram] Swedish police were criticised on Monday after admitting they failed to release information about alleged sexual assaults against women by young immigrants at a Stockholm summer music festival over the past two years.

There were 38 reports of rape and sexual assault filed after the We Are Sthlm festival, which uses the postal abbreviation for Stockholm, in 2014 and 2015, according to police.

The allegations were first made public in a report by the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, citing internal police memos, and the events appear to mirror similar incidents on New Year's Eve in the German city of Cologne.

"We certainly should have publicly released this information, no doubt. Why it did not happen we simply do not know," police front man Varg Gyllander told AFP Monday.

Police would not say how many men were suspected in the alleged assaults, but DN reported that as many as 50 Afghan refugees who had come to Sweden without their parents were suspected to be involved.

Documents sent by police to AFP show allegations of 17 sexual assaults and one rape during the 2014 music festival, and 19 sexual assaults and one rape last year.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven on Monday was critical of the police and their handling of the incident.

"I feel a very strong anger that young women are not able to go to a music festival without being offended, sexually harassed and attacked," Lofven told news hounds.

"It is a major democratic problem for the whole of our country," he said of the police failure to release timely information of the incidents to the public.

Authorities have promised a full investigation.

The news emerged after reports of New Year's Eve attacks in Cologne, where more than 500 women were allegedly sexually assaulted or robbed by men of foreign origin including recently arrived refugees, according to German authorities.

#2  This story is bogus. Several police officers tried to contact the mentioned newspaper, and calls were not responded to. The paper's editors felt information on this attack would be support for the center right party SD, and blew it off.
When the Cologne attacks were revealed, they (the newspaper) suddenly were interested. They, the newspaper are trying to do a case of blame shifting.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Plans To Introduce Work Permits For Syrian Refugees, Minister Says
[NRTTV] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
plans to offer Syrian refugees work permits in order to encourage fewer of them to migrate, Volkan Bozkir, Turkey's minister for European Affairs, said on Monday (Jan. 11), amid European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
(EU) pressure to reduce the flow of migrants.

Bozkir was speaking after meeting European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans, who last week said the European Union was far from satisfied with Turkey's efforts to prevent migrants from crossing the Aegean Sea to Greece.

"We have started to provide visas to Syrians coming from third party countries on January 8. We are trying to reduce the pressure for illegal migration by giving Syrians in Turkey work permits," Bozkir told news hounds after the meeting Timmermans in Ankara.

"The number of people immigrating illegally exceeded 150,000 in 2015, and Turkish authorities stopped 500 migrants daily," he added.

Turkey is the world's biggest host of refugees amid the greatest global movement of refugees ever recorded.

More than 2.2 million Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey from the civil war, now in its sixth year. Another 200,000 Iraqi refugees also shelter there, and migrants from Iran, Afghanistan and Africa all use Turkey as a transit point to Europe.

Turkey, which aspires to join the EU, struck a deal with the EU in November to prevent migrants from traveling to Europe in return for 3 billion euro ($3.3 billion) in cash, a deal on visas and renewed talks on joining the 28-nation bloc.

The Turkish government has been weighing plans to make it easier for Syrians to earn a living, but it has been hampered by a domestic unemployment rate of about 10 percent as economic growth slows.

Radical cleric Bashir to front court in bid for early prison release
[CHANNELNEWSASIA] Terrorist convict Abu Bakar Bashir
... Leader of the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council and proprietor of the al-Mukmin madrassah in Ngruki. The spriritual head of Jemaah Islamiya, which he denies exists. Bashir was jugged and then released in the wake of the 2002 Bali bombings, which he blamed on a conspiracy among the U.S., Israel, and Australia ...
will appear in court Tuesday (Jan 12) for a judicial review to get an early release from his 15-year prison sentence.

The trial was moved to Cilacap, central Java, from its original location at the South Jakarta district court after judges approved a request from Bashir's team of attorneys to have it at a more convenient location, because of his age and frail health.

The 77-year-old holy man, who publicly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. holy warrior group in 2014, is being held at the Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap regency.

Bashir, known as the spiritual leader of holy warrior organization, Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid, is serving 15 years in prison.

In 2011, he was found guilty of funding military training of a terrorist group in Aceh.

He appealed to the Jakarta High Court, which reduced his sentence to nine years.

But, the Supreme Court overruled that decision and changed the sentence back to 15 year before Bashir asked for a judicial review.

In Tuesday's judicial review, Bashir will be represented by a team of ten attorneys, who will be presenting five new witnesses in the trial, three of whom are also serving time in the Nusakambangan prison.

Many of the hardline holy man's supporters are expected to attend the trial which is open to the public.

Bashir's attorneys have urged them to exercise restraint and not cause any security problems.

"They have already agreed on that, and they already promised us they will only come and give mental support but for the security institution, please be careful, and be alert for provocateurs who might provoke the situation," said lawyer Mahendradatta.

The judicial review is expected to stretch over three to four sessions, which could last for several weeks.

Hezbollah said to get arms direct from Russia, can use against Israel
[IsraelTimes] Daily Beast quotes terror group's commanders in Syria bragging that 'we are Moscow's strategic allies'

Hezbollah is receiving long-range missiles, laser-guided rockets and other sophisticated weaponry directly from Russia in Syria, and is free to use that weaponry against Israel if it so chooses, Hezbollah fighters told the Daily Beast website.

In a report published Monday, Hezbollah field commanders with troops fighting alongside Assad regime forces were quoted saying that they are getting "heavy weapons directly from Russia with no strings attached."

"We are strategic allies... The Russians are our allies and give us weapons," said a Hezbollah officer named as Commander Bakr, who oversees some 200 fighters.

A Hezbollah recruiter and trainer named Assir was quoted saying Moscow has placed no restriction on the use Hezbollah can make of Russian arms. They can be utilized "against Israel if the organization deems it necessary," the report said.

"When it comes to Israel," Assir was quoted saying, "Hezbollah doesn't take directions from anyone."

The Daily Beast noted, however, that it was "not clear" that Assir was "in a senior enough position to know what secret agreements have been made."

Both Hezbollah sources also said that the group doesn't really need Russian weaponry to take on Israel, because it has enough Iranian weaponry. "They say they are fully prepared to withstand an invasion on the southern border with the Iranian arms in their arsenal," the Daily Beast said.

Russia's deputy foreign minister said last week that Russia would not change a decision to keep Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and Hezbollah off its list of terrorist organizations.

Israel has repeatedly attacked arms depots in Syria and convoys carrying weapons to Hezbollah from Syria in recent years, according to foreign reports, and has sometimes acknowledged carrying out such strikes. It has said that it will not allow advanced weaponry to reach Hezbollah forces.

Iran: Oil Prices Harm all Producers
[ALMANAR.LB] Iran's Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh said current oil prices harm all producers and certain countries' insistence on overproduction is politically motivated.

"None of the oil producers is happy with the existing prices which will harm suppliers in the long term," he said on the sidelines of Iran's opening of two gas operations in its biggest oil field.

"Historically, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) would intervene to strike a balance between supply and demand when there were excess oil in the market," Zangeneh said.

According to the Iranian minister, "there is a political will behind OPEC indecision over production ceiling in the organization."

OPEC has been producing nearly a million more barrels of oil each day than its 30 million bpd ceiling for the past 16 months.

The organization approved a Saudi plan to scrap allocating fixed production quotas to member countries in its Dec. 2011 meeting and introduced output ceiling of 30 million barrels per day (bpd) which does not specify quotas.

Zangeneh has described the decision a "historic mistake", saying "making up for this big mistake and reviving the quota system in OPEC is a very hard task."

Because of overproduction chiefly by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and non-OPEC producers, there is currently up to 2.5 million bpd of excess oil in the market which has caused crude prices to lose around 60% of their value since mid-2014.

Iran has asked OPEC to reduce production and respect the ceiling as it plans to reclaim its position as the group's second largest producer.

Syrian opposition coordinator says no talks while 'foreign forces' bombing Syria
[Al Ahram] The coordinator of the Syrian opposition, former prime minister Riad Hijab, said Monday there would be no negotiations with the Syrian regime while "foreign forces" were bombing the country. "We cannot negotiate with the regime while there are foreign forces bombing the Syrian people," Hijab said after a meeting with French President Francois Hollande in Paris.

#2  Seems to me that the bombing is not working or that Hijab isn't there.

Increase the bombing till it does work and hunt down Hijab.

Iran Sacks Senior Security Official over Saudi Embassy Attack
[ALMANAR.LB] Iran has sacked a security bigshot over his failure to stop the attack on Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's embassy.

Safar Ali Baratlou's replacement as security deputy to Tehran's governor general was already under review, but the interior ministry said "a blind eye could not be turned" to what happened at the embassy.

The mission and the Saudi consulate in Mashhad, Iran's second city, were attacked by protesters angered by Riyadh's execution of prominent holy man, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

"After initial investigations, failures... were confirmed" in connection with the "assault on the Saudi embassy", the ministry said late Sunday, cited by the official IRNA news agency.

"Because of the importance of the matter, the interior ministry cannot overlook the smallest failures and factors that led to this incident," the statement added of the attack and Baratlou's dismissal.

Saudi regime executed Sheikh Nimr on January 2. He was a vocal supporter of the mass pro-democracy protests against Riyadh, which erupted in Eastern Province in 2011, where a Shia majority has long complained of marginalization.

Riyadh then cut diplomatic ties with Tehran after the incidents, deepening the crisis over the execution.

Other Arab countries followed suit and severed or reduced relations with Iran.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani strongly condemned the attacks as "totally unjustifiable", urging judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani to deal with wrongdoers immediately.

over the attacks.

"Once and for all such assaults on the country's security, an insult to the establishment's authority and position, should be prevented by punishing perpetrators and those who ordered this blatant crime," Rouhani said in a letter to Larijani on Wednesday.
