Afghanistan
No compromise on women’s rights if peace deal achieved: Gulbuddin’s party
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Amid optimisms that a peace deal will be achieved in the near future with Hezb-e-Islami party led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
, the representatives of the party have seized there will be no compromise on women’s rights if two sides agreed to strike a deal.

According to the Afghan High Peace Council, the pledge by the representatives of Hezb-e-Islami was made during a meeting with the women’s rights activist in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
today.

The activists reportedly shared their concerns and questions with the representatives of Hezb-e-Islami who are in Kabul for peace talks.

This comes as the Afghan women suffered the most during the Taliban regime followed by years of violence as a result of civil war.

The women were particularly targeted by the Taliban regime who were barred from studies and other social activities.

However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
Atiqullah Safi, a member of Hezb-e-Islami said the party respects the women’s position in the society and dismissed the reports regarding the party’s stance to prevent women from education as baseless.

Safi further added at least 8,000 children are studying in the schools of Hezb-e-Islami with the girls students forming half of the number.

Salah Abdeslam 'refused to blow himself up', says brother
How noble of him, to be sure. Of course, there are all those killed by the other suicide bombers he'd gotten supplies and such for, so he'll get some credit from Allah toward his own mansion in Paradise full of male and female virgins when the time comes...
[FRANCE24] The suspected ringleader of the Gay Paree attacks, Salah Abdeslam, decided not to blow himself up during the wave of killings in the French capital last year, his brother said on Friday.

Mohammed Abdeslam said his brother "voluntarily chose not to blow himself up" along with the other Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadists who killed 130 people in gun and suicide kabooms in November.

"If I wanted, there would have been more victims," Salah Abdeslam told his brother from prison in northern Belgium, according to Belgian media chain BFMTV.

"Luckily, I did not follow through."

Salah Abdeslam, the sole surviving suspect in the November attacks in Gay Paree, was tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Brussels on March 18 after four months on the run as Europe's most wanted man.

He is believed to have acted as a logistics coordinator and told Sherlocks he was meant to carry out a suicide kaboom at the Stade de La Belle France stadium, but backed out.

Four days after he was arrested, the Belgian capital was struck by IS bombings at the airport and a metro station carried out by jihadists with links to the Gay Paree attacks cell.

The 26-year-old, who is about to be extradited to La Belle France, apparently told his brother he wants to cooperate with Sherlocks, but denied any role in the Brussels bombings.

French interior ministry mistakenly identifies man as terror suspect
Sacred blue!
[FRANCE24] A photograph of a man named as terrorism suspect Reda Kriket, which had been distributed by the French interior ministry and widely circulated in the media, has turned out to be a case of mistaken identity, a French news show reported this week.

The photograph shows a young man with close-cropped hair and stubble who is not, in fact, Reda Kriket, Le Petit Journal reported.

Kriket, 34, was locked away
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
near Gay Paree on March 24 for suspicion of planning a terror attack in La Belle France. On raiding his home, police found an arsenal of weapons and explosives, just two days after suicide kabooms in Brussels killed over thirty people. Two photos purporting to show Kriket have circulated on news sites around the world, one in black and white and the other in colour. The black-and-white photo, of a young man with a short mustache, does in fact show Reda Kriket. The colour photograph, however, is of a different man.

The mixup started in January 2016, when the French interior ministry released a "wanted" notice for Kriket to police departments all over La Belle France. Kriket was suspected of belonging to a jihadist network with links to Syria, of which Abdhelhamid Abaaoud, an organiser of the November 13 Gay Paree attacks, was also a member. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
the photo which the interior ministry included on the Kriket notice was taken from another file, unrelated to the terrorism investigation.

Before Le Petit Journal pointed out the mistake, the photograph had already been published by international news sites like the BBC, CBS, the Mirror, and MetroNews, and on French news TV channels like TF1 and La Belle France3, as well as being reproduced in countless tweets and Facebook posts. So far, none of the English-language sites seem to have issued a correction about the photograph.

Le Petit Journal said they had confirmed the real identity of the man in the colour photograph, who lives in Courbevoie, the same Gay Paree suburb which Kriket is from. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
they withheld the man’s name. Reda Kriket has been placed under formal investigation and faces charges for planning what French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve referred to as a terror attack in the "advanced stages."

The man who was falsely identified in the colour photograph, on the other hand, could in fact sue French authorities for damages.

Brussels airport to partially reopen on Sunday
[FRANCE24] Brussels Airport will partially reopen for passengers on Sunday, 12 days after jacket wallahs destroyed its departure hall and killed 16 people.

There will be far fewer flights than normal at the start and tighter security will be in place, but the airport operator said the aim was to return to full capacity by summer.

The country’s main airport has not handled passenger flights since two suspected Islamist snuffies carried out the suicide kabooms. Those bombs and a separate one on a metro train in the city killed 35 people, including three bombers.

"Never will we forget this black day," the airport’s chief executive Arnaud Feist told a news conference. "A restart of the operations even only partially as quick as this is a sign of hope.

"As of tomorrow, Sunday, Brussels Airport should be partially operational," he added.

Feist said the airport had planned three flights for the first day, to Faro, Athens and Turin, all operated by Brussels Airlines. The number of flights should increase over time.

One-third of EU fighters in Syria return home
[NEWS24] Almost 30% of EU citizens who joined the fight in Syria have returned home, according to a new study.
Why are they allowed back in?
The study, prepared by the Hague-based International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, said that over 4 000 Europeans had gone to fight in Syria, of whom 14% were confirmed dead.

French, Germans and Britons make up the highest number of imported muscle from European countries in the ranks of gangs in Syria, the study reported, but Belgium is the largest contributor in proportion to its population.

Europeans fighting alongside groups in Syria and Iraq have been high on the agenda of European security concerns for several years.

Returned volunteers have been involved in attacks in Gay Paree and Brussels over the past 18 months, including last month's kabooms in the Belgian capital.

The study however, maintained that "not all FF [imported muscle] are terrorists, and not all turbans are FF".

"Thus, not all returnees systematically present a danger to the societies to which they return," it added.

The researchers said that it was hard to understand the motivations of the returnees, but a previous study published by Dutch Security and Intelligence Service in 2014 offered various reasons for returning. These included: "being disillusioned, being traumatised, [feelings of] betrayal, realisation of the atrocities, and regret, as well as having plans to recruit others or commit attacks in their countries of departure."
But recruiting isn't a danger. Trust us...
About 17% of them were female and 23% were converts to Islam, according to the latest study, published on Friday. Most came from urban areas or peripheral suburbs of the continent's cities.

Belgium - home to the attackers linked to last year's Gay Paree shootings as well as last month's Brussels bombings - sent 41 fighters per million population.

Not only did Belgium contribute the most fighters compared to its population, but only 18% of them had returned, compared to 50% of those who had left from Denmark, the researchers said. Austria and Sweden followed in per capita terms.

In absolute terms, La Belle France was the largest source country for fighters who had left to fight alongside the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant. The study counted more than 900 of them.

Germany and Britannia also contributed large numbers.

Air France stewardesses mutiny over order to wear headscarves
Air France stewardesses, furious at being ordered to wear headscarves in Tehran, say they will refuse to fly to the Iranian capital when the airline resumes the service later this month.

Female members of flight crews have been ordered to cover their hair once they disembark in Tehran and unions are demanding that the flights be made voluntary for women.
How about just saying "No!" and sticking to your guns?
The resumption of a thrice-weekly service between Paris and Tehran, planned for April 17 after an eight-year break, follows a thaw in relations since Iran agreed to dismantle large sections of its nuclear programme.

Iranian women have been forced by law to cover their hair or face stiff fines since the 1979 Islamic revolution. In staunchly secular France, however, public signs of religion have been frowned upon since a 1905 law separating church and state.

French women see Islamic headscarves and veils as an affront to their dignity. Headscarves are banned in French state schools and offices, and it is illegal to wear the full-face Muslim veil in public.

Flore Arrighi, head of the UNAC flight crews’ union, said: “It is not our role to pass judgement on the wearing of headscarves or veils in Iran. What we are denouncing is that it is being made compulsory. Stewardesses must be given the right to refuse these flights.”

She added that female staff were entitled to exercise “individual freedoms”.

The financially ailing French airline, which sees the resumption of Tehran flights as an “excellent” business development, pointed out that other airline staff were obliged to comply with Iranian rules. “Tolerance and respect for the customs of the countries we serve are part of the values of our company,” a spokesman said.
Perhaps you should tolerate and respect the customs of your own country...
In Saudi Arabia, stewardesses must wear the “abaya”, a long robe that covers the body, but unlike Saudi women they are not compelled to wear face veils.
You shouldn't fly there either...
Air France argued that French law allows “the restriction of individual liberties” if “justified by the nature of the task to be accomplished.”

The Grand Turk
Erdogan brings American Muslims home to new mosque
[FRANCE24] Beneath a majestic Ottoman dome, waving Turkish flags outside their brand new mosque, a group of US Muslims -- the faithful and the curious -- jostled Saturday to welcome a president.
Shucks. I oughta pop on down to see it. It's only a few miles. I used to work in Lanham. Sure is nice to have an enormous gaudy Ottoman mosque that conveniently located.
Hailing the beauty of its location near the capital Washington, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
officially inaugurated the Diyanet Center of America.

Ankara's leader, whose country bankrolled the massive project at a cost of $110 million, said its presence in the small town of Lanham -- and during a US election year that has seen Donald Trump call for a ban on Muslims entering the country -- made sense.

"Unfortunately, we are going through a rough time all around the world. Intolerance towards Muslims is on the rise not only here in the United States but also around the globe," said Erdogan, who is accused of increasingly autocratic rule.

"That's why I believe this center will play a crucial role," he added, drawing cheers from the crowd of thousands of men, women and kiddies packed behind security barriers.

The complex, the only one in the United States to feature two minarets, echoes the golden age of 16th century Ottoman architecture, with its central dome, half domes and cupolas in the style of Istanbul's Suleymaniye Mosque.

"Terrorism will never have a religion, will never have a nation, will never have a nationality, nor will it ever have a root or ethnicity," Erdogan said.

"It is unacceptable for the Muslims of the world to be forced to pay the price of the horror and pain created by a handful of turbans in the aftermath of 9/11."

#1  "Terrorism will never have a religion...

Erdogan here presents the childish, PC version of the Sunnah, which is contrary to the real, fundamental reality of Mohammad's hideous legacy. Why, most of the 43-odd battles mentioned in the Sunnah were terrorist attacks on unsuspecting caravans, etc., as the Mohammadians were low on cash during the Medina period...

will never have a nation,...

except of course, for the Arab nations, and now apparently Turkey...

will never have a nationality,..

like Arabian, I guess

nor will it ever have a root or ethnicity,"

Obama meets Erdogan amid talk of 'snub'
[NEWS24] US President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
met his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
in Washington Thursday, the White House said, amid serious tensions over press freedom and the war in Syria.

Having previously stated the pair were unlikely to hold sit-down talks, a decision widely perceived as a snub by Washington the White House said the two men had in fact met on the margins of a nuclear security summit.

They discussed "US-The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
cooperation on regional security, counterterrorism, and migration," it said.

The absence of a presidential meeting on Erdogan's trip to the US capital had been glaring.

The two countries are meant to be close NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
allies in the thick of a fight against ISIS in Syria.

But tensions have been stirred by Ankara's attacks on Kurdish Death Eaters, some of whom are seen by Washington as the best bet for tackling ISIS in Iraq and northern Syria.

Turkey says the groups are linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has fought a long battle for Kurdish independence.

Turkey accused of forcibly returning refugees to Syria
[DAWN] Amnesty International accused The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on Friday of illegally forcing groups of Syrians to return to their conflict-torn country, saying the alleged expulsions highlighted the "fatal flaws" in a migrant deal agreed with the EU.

The claim comes just days before Turkey is due to start taking back migrants colonists expelled from the EU under an accord reached last month.

Amnesty said its research in the south of Turkey suggested the country was forcing around a hundred Syrians to return home on a daily basis.

Turkey -- which has taken in 2.7 million Syrian refugees since the conflict began in 2011 -- has always vehemently denied that any Syrian is forced to go home and insists its "open door" policy remains in place.

Scrutiny grows over St. Paul imam's involvement in ISIS cases
[MPRNEWS.ORG] An influential St. Paul imam lobbied the father of one of the ISIS defendants to have his son take his case to trial, rather than plead guilty, according to a court document filed Thursday.

Under normal circumstances, that would be well within the religious leader's right. But the imam, Hassan Mohamud, is also a law clerk working for a defense attorney of another young Twin Cities man charged in the case, Mohammed Farah.

Increasing scrutiny over Mohamud's role prompted Farah's attorney, P. Chinedu Nwaneri, to file a motion early Friday stating he would withdraw from the case. Nwaneri said he wanted to remove himself "to stop further distractions in this matter."

Pathankot JIT’s visit positive, says Indian minister
[DAWN] The meeting between Indian and Pak Sherlocks was "positive" and the Pak side did "not contradict" India’s findings in the Pathankot airbase attack probe, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Friday.

He, however, said no date had yet been fixed for the visit of the Indian investigation team to Pakistain.

"The meeting between Indian and Pak Sherlocks is positive. They (Pak team) have not contradicted our findings," the minister of state for home told news hounds here.

Rijiju was replying to a question about the visit of a Pak Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to India in the Pathankot terror case during which they recorded the statements of the witnesses.

"It all went well and satisfactorily. Our agencies have done whatever was necessary," he said.

The Pak team was given some more documents which included DNA report of the four bandidos murderous Moslems killed in the 80-hour gunbattle with security forces in Pathankot.

No indigenous armed movement in Balochistan: IG FC Balochistan
[DAWN] Inspector General Frontier Corps
...a provincial paramilitary force. Total manpower is about 80,000. They are tasked to help local law enforcement in the maintenance of law and order, and to carry out border patrol and anti-smuggling operations....
(FC), Major General Sher Afgan said Saturday that there is no indigenous armed movement in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
.

"The arrest of the Indian spy has proven Indian state sponsored terrorism in Pakistain," said Afgan while speaking in detail regarding Indian and Afghan intelligence’s involvement in acts of terrorism in Balochistan.

The inspector general also claimed that controllers and other agents linked with Kulbushan Jadhav, the RAW agent nabbed
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
from Balochistan, have been arrested by security forces in the aftermath of Jhadav’s arrest.

Afgan did not give further details about the arrests made.

"The Indian agent entered Pakistain from Sarawan," said the IG.

FC’s top officer elaborated that India was actively involved in terror and subversive activities in Balochistan, and was hatching conspiracies to derail the multi-billion dollar China-Pakistain Economic Corridor.

The government later aired a confessional video of Jhadav.

’s (IS) Khorasan chapter across the border in Afghanistan, the inspector general stated, "There is no IS in Balochistan."

Afgan added that IS will however have an impact in Pakistain, but has yet failed to establish a foothold in the province as the culture and traditions of the province have so far rejected the Death Eater group’s ideology.

The IG FC also said security forces have conducted successful intelligence based operations and have been successful in eliminating all ‘no-go areas’.

"Currently there are no no-go areas in Balochistan."

Foreigners living in 65 houses in capital ‘disappear’
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: Foreigners residing in 65 houses in the capital city disappeared after final notices were served on them to submit their details to the police last month.

Officials in the police told Dawn that the 65 houses were among the 303 which were under the occupation of foreigners. The tenants had refused to provide their details to the police by March 15. The police collected the details about the tenants of 238 houses but found the 65 residences vacant when approached after the expiry of the deadline.

There is no clue to the whereabouts of the foreigners who lived in the 65 houses. Either they moved to other localities in the capital or left the city or even the country, the officials said. When the owners of the houses were approached by the police, they just said the foreigners no longer lived there.

"As we have no details about the foreigners, including their names and nationalities or passport numbers, it is impossible to trace their whereabouts," a police officer said, requesting anonymity. Similarly, he added, the reason behind their stay in the capital without disclosing their identity was also not known.

"Such mysterious disappearances rose suspicions about the tenants and there is a possibility that they might have been involved in anti-state activities or other practices," the officer said.

He was of the view that the immigration department may be asked to check how many foreigners had left Islamabad during the last two months. But such a practice may also not confirm that those who left the country were the foreigners who lived in the 65 houses in Islamabad.

The inspector general of the capital police, Khalid Khattak, could not be contacted for comments. According to a household survey conducted in February 2014, foreigners living in 430 houses refused to give their details to the police.

[DAWN] Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Khan, while addressing a presser on Saturday, stated that there had been a general consensus that the demands of the pro-Qadri protestors, staging a sit-in at D-Chowk, were invalid.

"A few individuals were making wrong use of the notion of the finality of Prophet Mohammed (PTUI!) for personal political gain, and it was decided that the area had to be cleared promptly," said the interior minister.

The interior minister added that the consensus had been achieved in a meeting with the prime minister.

Iraq
It’s home bittersweet home for returning Iraqi migrants
Some of the Iraqis who left their country in 2015 were fleeing combat zones, persecution or squalid camps but others like Mustafa and Murtada were simply running away from unemployment and boredom. A study of the migrant flows from Iraq by the International Organization for Migration reveals that "no hope in the future" was the main reason of departure for 80 percent of respondents.
[IsraelTimes] Disappointment, homesickness and fear of violent attacks from neo-Nazi gangs motivating thousands to return to their war-torn homeland

Disappointment, simple homesickness and even the high cost of cigarettes are pushing a growing number of Iraqis to return home after risking everything to reach Europe last year.

Hundreds are coming back every month, most of them with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration.

Olde Tyme Religion
Armed New Black Panthers Confront Armed Anti-Islamic Protesters
[DallasMorningNews] Racial tensions in South Dallas almost exploded at an anti-mosque protest Saturday afternoon before quickly dissolving when the protesters retreated.

Both sides were armed.

Dallas police stood guard on a funeral home’s roof as black counter protesters swarmed the parking lot of Eva’s House of Bar-B-Q, vowing to defend their streets and chanting "black power."

"This is what they fear -- the black man," said activist Olinka Green. "This is what America fears."

The anti-mosque group showed up in camouflage, carrying guns and an American flag, FOX 4 reported. They left soon after and the protests ended without incident.

"It’s a people’s victory here in South Dallas today," said Yafeuh Balogun of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, named for the founder of the original Black Panther Party.

Balogun, who helped organized the counter protest, added that he wasn’t "surprised" the group withdrew when confronted by the emotional crowd.

"Would you come out and face them?"

The Bureau of American Islamic Relations, or BAIR, had planned to protest against the Nation of Islam mosque at 1 p.m.

The group rallies against what it calls radical Islamism. Its name riffs on the national Muslim advocacy group CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations. BAIR has protested multiple times outside the Islamic Center of Irving and had threatened a protest outside the Nation of Islam two weeks ago, but no one showed up.

The group decided to protest at the Nation of Islam on Saturday, accusing the mosque of "promoting violence against Americans openly and publicly," according to a Facebook page about the event.

"We cannot stand by while all these different Anti American, Arab radical Islamists team up with Nation of Islam/Black Panthers and White anti American Anarchist groups, joining together in the goal of destroying our Country and killing innocent people to gain Dominance through fear!" the event invite says.

The Huey P. Newton Gun Club and the New Black Panther Party were among those to come out in opposition. They, too, wore full gear and carried rifles.

Krystal Muhammad, national chair of the New Black Panther Party, accused BAIR of trying to "intimidate and bully" the mosque. She and others lined Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, armed and dressed in black, because "no one else will protect our people."

Rowdy crowds in south Dallas as black rights groups prepare to clash with anti-Islamic group protesting mosque

Down the street, in the barbecue restaurant’s parking lot, anger at Saturday’s anti-Islamic outsiders quickly bubbled into shouts about racism and classism in America.

A chorus of voices cried out in support of "black power."

They bellowed to shield their home from white infiltration: "Whose streets? Our streets?"

One man swore at a white TV reporter and later shouted, to no one in particular, that "we got the right to shoot back" if tensions escalated.

Robert Greaves, who lives in South Dallas, said his community owed no explanation for its anger and frustration.

"This is the black America that white America made," he said.

I'm afraid the prevention window closed on that one a while back. The exact date may be sketchy, but it was somewhere around November of 2008 as I recall.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Obama: Iran not following 'spirit' of deal
So let's just see how well the niftily-named "snapback" provision works, shall we? Or are you afraid of looking like the fool you are?
President Obama on Friday criticized Iranian leaders for undermining the "spirit" of last year's historic nuclear agreement, even as they stick to the "letter" of the pact.

In comments following the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, Obama denied speculation that the United States would ease rules preventing dollars from being used in financial transactions with Iran, in order to boost the country's engagement with the rest of the world.

Instead, Obama claimed, that Iran's troubles even after the lifting of sanctions under the nuclear deal were due to its continued support of Hezbollah, ballistic missile tests and other aggressive behavior.

"Iran so far has followed the letter of the agreement, but the spirit of the agreement involves Iran also sending signals to the world community and businesses that it is not going to be engaging in a range of provocative actions that are going to scare businesses off," Obama said at a press conference.

"When they launch ballistic missiles with slogans calling for the destruction of Israel, that makes businesses nervous."

"Iran has to understand what every country in the world understands, which is businesses want to go where they feel safe, where they don't see massive controversy, where they can be confident that transactions are going to operate normally," he added. "And that's an adjustment that Iran's going to have to make as well."

Months after the U.S. and other global powers lifted sanctions against Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program, Iranian leaders complain that they have yet to reap the benefits.

"Our banking trade, our efforts to return wealth from their banks, various kinds of businesses that require financial services -- all of these are still facing problems," Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in an address last month. "When we investigate the issue, it becomes obvious that [the banks] are afraid of the United States."

Despite the lifting of sanctions, American companies are still banned from doing business in Iran and foreign banks are prohibited from using the U.S. dollar for their Iranian dealings. Earlier this week, multiple reports indicated that the White House was considering easing financial rules to let foreign companies use the dollar to do business with Iran.

But on Friday, Obama appeared to shoot the idea down.

"That's not actually the approach that we're taking," he said.

"It is not necessary that we take the approach of them going through dollar transactions," he added. "It is possible for them to work through European financial institutions as well."

Instead, Obama said, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and other U.S. officials would help "provide clarity" to global businesses about what kinds of work they can do in Iran under current rules.

US considering sending more special forces to Syria
[NEWS24] US officials are weighing sending more special forces troops to Syria, where the contingent of American fighters currently numbers around 50, a senior military official told AFP on Saturday.

A US official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the additional troops would be used to bolster US special forces sent to Syria several months ago.

"Presumably they would do more of what they're already doing," said the official, who said the mission would be expected to take on "no new capabilities but an increase of the current capabilities".

The official said no determination has been made about the number of troops who could be sent or whether they will be sent at all.

"Nothing has been decided yet," the official said.
And likely nothing will...
The Pentagon last year said it was sending about 50 special operations troops to work with anti-ISIS fighters in Syria, although officials have said next to nothing about their whereabouts or progress since, and have worked hard to ensure no information about the commandos' presence is released, citing security reasons.

US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter has said the American forces are directly engaged in pinpointing targets in Syria. Some were involved in helping identify targets during coalition air strikes in late February to liberate the Syrian town of Shaddadi from ISIS control.

Islamic State planted thousands of mines in Palmyra: Syrian army
It's what they do, along with digging tunnels, suicide bombers, taking hostages, and selling drugs, antiquities, and sex slaves -- in short, the ultimate modern jihadi organization.
[REUTERS] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bandidos snuffies retreating from Palmyra laid thousands of mines that they planned to set off simultaneously as the army moved in, a Syrian officer told Rooters in the ancient city after its recapture from the jihadist fighters.

The officer said main streets and side roads in Palmyra had been rigged with explosives weighing up to 50 kg. More than 3,000 had already been safely detonated since government forces, backed by Russian jets, retook the city on Sunday, he said.

He did not say why the Islamic State fighters failed to set off the explosives before pulling out, but his assertion echoed comments from Syria's antiquities chief, who said the bandidos snuffies intended to dynamite a greater area of the city's 2,000-year-old ruins than they already had.

The officer, who did not give his name, said the bombs left behind were linked so they could go off together.

"All the government buildings are rigged in a network connected to the Daesh [Islamic State] leadership headquarters," he said, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State. "The idea was that as we enter it would all go off at once, not just bomb by bomb. And there are a really huge number of bombs."

Islamic State's defeat in Palmyra was not only a significant military victory for Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
, opening up the country's central desert to government forces and their allies. It also cast the Syrian army as an effective fighting force against jihadists bent on cultural vandalism and wanton killing.

A military source told Rooters on Saturday troops had identified 45 bodies in a mass grave in Palmyra, including civilians and Syrian army members captured by Islamic State.

Parts of Palmyra have been cleared, including the road from Homs. But Syrian soldiers -- soon to be joined by Russian de-mining experts -- are still working on defusing or detonating explosives.
