Taliban Struggling Financially Since Mansour's Death
[Tolo News] The Taliban appear to be facing financial pressure since the death of their former leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour, who was more adept at managing money, Charles Cleveland, kept in touch with the world by Obamaphone,
...was ruled by a Democrat machine from 1942 through 1971. After the river caught fire during the administration of Carl Stokes they tried a Republican, then went back to being Democrats when the party hacked up Dennis Kucinich ...

"The evidence we've seen of that is an increase in their taxes to locals as they move through," Cleveland said at a presser Wednesday in Kabul

Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
. "We believe that the death of Mullah Mansour certainly contributed to that as well."

Mansour, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistain's Balochistan

province in May, had financial acumen that, along with his involvement in the narcotics trade, helped grow the group's war chest, Cleveland said.

"It was a good harvest and we did expect the Taliban to be flush with money, but since that time of course Mansour was killed and we have seen this evidence, in particular the taxes being raised on the local population," he said.

The financial pressure could be affecting Taliban operational readiness. But Cleveland acknowledged the bad boy group manages to offset some of that pressure through their field operations against Afghan cops.

"Of course what we've also seen is that they will raid a checkpoint and they kind of restock some of their supplies as well," Cleveland added.

This comes while the holy warriors have increased their attacks in different parts of the country recently - especially in Helmand

Dostum Warns Soldiers Against Negligence
[Tolo News] First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
on Thursday met with residents of Faryab and Sar-e-Pul provinces where he said any soldier that neglects in their duty will face legal action by relevant organizations.

"We implement the law on all the military personnel. No matter who they are. If they are police chief or head of security or anyone else, we ask them about the security situation and we have the authority to punish them," Dostum said.
Trust me, officer, you don't want Dostum unhappy with your policing tactics...
He stated he will eliminate the forces of Evil from Ghormach district in Faryab and then he will go to Kunduz ‐ where heavy fights are ongoing between Afghan forces and Taliban for the past two weeks.

"Taliban should be fully uprooted from Kunduz. I will not return to Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
until Kunduz is not cleared [of the Lion of Islam group]," he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was wondering if Buck was okay. He suspected he wasn't...
Dostum said Pakistain's Chief of Army Staff (Raheel Sharif
..Pak chief of army staff, meaning he pulls the strings on the Nawaz Sharif puppet to make it dance and sing and not do much at all....
) is behind the increase in insecurity in Afghanistan.

"Pakistain's chief of army staff, who is going to retire within the next few weeks, is behind the conflicts in Afghanistan. He orders the war and it is good that he is about to retire and someone else is going to replace him," Dostum stated.

Dostum's remarks on Pakistain come at a time that according to reports, Pakistain has recently tossed in the calaboose

Key Helmand Officials Clash Over War Leadership
[Tolo News] A number of security sources told TOLOnews that a discussion between head of military operations in Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, Abdul Jabbar Qahraman and police chief of the province, Aqa Noor Kintoz, has led into a verbal clash between the two key officials over the war leadership in the southern province.

The sources said Qahraman has warned the police chief that he will fired.

In a chat with TOLOnews, Qahraman rejected the allegations and assured that there is a good coordination among security forces in Helmand.

"Such arguments happen when there are challenges, especially in war and it is quite usual, but it does not mean that we do not have coordination. We do have coordination; even we are not disconnected one second from each other. But oppositions want to use this issue for their own interests," Qahraman said.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
Helmand police chief refused to comment on the issue.

It is said that lack of cooperation, poor war management, appointment based on relationships and corruption in security agencies are the main reasons behind the increased insecurity in parts of the country.

"We [Helmand residents] urge the central government to pay the required attention to Helmand and send reinforcements here. Otherwise, the scenic provincial capital, police headquarter, local government buildings and other state offices will fall to the Taliban," said Mohammad Hashim Alokozay, member of Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament).

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had escaped from his bonds and overwhelmed his guard using the bludgeon the faithful Filomena had smuggled to him in the loaf of bread...
Ministry of Defense (MoD) said dozens of forces of Evil have been killed so far and that festivities are ongoing in Nawa and Chah Anjir districts in the province.

"There is coordination among security forces. The head of operations is responsible for coordination among the soldiers and he is satisfied with the way we are working. Yesterday [Wednesday], we transferred supplies to Lashkargah by land and we reconstructed parts of the highway in Marjah. We ensured the safety of the areas," MoD's deputy front man Mohammad Radmanish.

ARG Skeptical Over Pakistan's Crackdown Against Key Taliban Leaders
[Tolo News] The Presidential Palace (ARG) on Thursday raised doubts over reports published in Pak media that Islamabad has initiated crackdown against a number of high profile Afghan Taliban leaders residing in Pakistain.

Dawa Khan Minapal, President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
's deputy front man expressed unawareness about the reports that could prove the credibility of the news, but advocated Islamabad for a swift handover of the Taliban inmates to Afghanistan.

"Pak government has not informed the Afghan government over its claims of arresting several Taliban members; therefore, Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
cannot verify the credibility of the report," he said.

The statement comes a day after Pak officials announced that at least three senior Taliban leaders , including Ahmadullah Muti alias Mullah Nanai who served as Taliban's designated intelligence chief, Sulaiman Agha, Taliban's designated governor for Daikundi province and Mullah Sani, also known as Samad Sani, head of a religious school and a well-known Afghan businessman who have links with the Taliban, have also been taken into custody in Pakistain's southwestern Balochistan

province.

Pak media reported that Mullah Nanai was tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
from a madrassa compound in Quetta city, the lovely provincial capital of Balochistan.

Mullah Nanai, who is originally a native of southern Kandahar province, has served in some key positions within the group. He worked as deputy head of the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
commission, minister of public works, Balkh governor and Herat

governor in the Taliban regime (1996 to 2001).

Nanai also enjoys close ties with Haqqani network and was leading the Taliban war in the eastern regions of Afghanistan.

Commenting on the report, military analyst Jawed Kohistan
...a backwoods district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa distinguished by being even more rustic than is the norm among the local Pashtuns....
i said: "Internal disputes within the Taliban has led to the arrest of these members; however, from the figures, some of them have strong reputation among the Taliban in terms of financial issues and in culture perspective."

Previously, Pakistain launched similar crackdowns against a number of influential Taliban leaders in that country, including the dramatic detention of the group's top commander Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
Pakistain never showed willingness to handover them to the Afghan government ‐ a move that raised serious questions on Pakistain's counter-terror policy.

"There are similar cases about the members of Tehrik-e-Taliban in Pakistain who were later murdered or detained, for instance Mullah [Abdul Ghani] Baradar, Mullah Obaidullah and similar individuals," said university lecturer Nasrullah Stanikzai.

According to reports, Pakistain is facing with increasing pressure from the international community over its controversial role in the war against terrorism.

Bilateral ties between Kabul and Islamabad have also strained over Pakistain's reluctance to target Taliban's hideouts in Pakistain, reports indicate.

US taxpayers donate $103k to Liliesleaf Farm to preserve ANC history
[IOL] Johannesburg ‐ United States of America Ambassador Patrick Gaspard gave Liliesleaf Farm CEO Nicholas Wolpe $103 329 on Wednesday, to help conserve rare items of significant value and relevance to the history of South Africa's liberation movement.

The US grant will enable Liliesleaf to digitise oral histories, rare books, letters from prison, scrapbooks, strategic organisational documents, and works produced in exile so they may be studied by future scholars.

Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, Johannesburg, was selected to receive the grant, which comes from the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), following a worldwide competition for funds dedicated by the US government to the preservation of cultural sites, cultural objects, and forms of traditional cultural expression in more than 100 countries.

Liliesleaf Farm was the headquarters of the African National Congress’s military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) until it was raided by the apartheid government’s security police in 1963.

Boko Haram releases 21 Chibok girls to Nigerian government
[CNN] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
bandidos snuffies handed over twenty-one Chibok schoolgirls to authorities Thursday after a series of negotiations, Nigeria's government said, in the first mass release of any of the more than 200 girls and women kidnapped from their school two years ago.

The twenty-one were freed before dawn in the northeastern Nigerian town of Banki, near the border with Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, a source close to the negotiations said on condition of anonymity.

A child born to one of the girls and believed by medical personnel to be about 20 months old also was released, according to the Nigerian president's office.

As many as 57 girls escaped almost immediately in 2014, and one was found this spring. Just under 200 remain unaccounted for after their release.
An Nahar adds:
Jihadist group Boko Haram has released 21 of the more than 200 kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls held since April 2014 in a prisoner swap deal with the Nigerian government, local sources said Thursday.

The girls were exchanged for four Boko Haram Death Eaters in Banki, northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, said the local sources.

The Nigerian presidency said in a statement that the girls were released after negotiations between Boko Haram, the International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) and the Nigerian and Swiss governments.

The statement added that negotiations are ongoing, raising the prospect of more releases.

Arabia
Iranians continue arming Houthis
Washington– The U.S. Pentagon said on Wednesday that Houthi militias will pay the price for the recent missile attacks on the USS Mason off the coast of Yemen.

The Mason, a U.S. destroyer deployed in the Red Sea, was targeted by missiles off the southern coast of Yemen on Sunday. The destroyer reportedly fired defense missiles and employed countermeasures.

Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters on Tuesday that the U.S. was “looking very hard right now” at who was responsible for the attack, which he described as involving “a shore-launched cruise missile.”

He added that the U.S. was considering retaliatory strikes against “whoever is responsible for the recent missile attacks.”

The missiles were fired at the USS Mason from Houthi-controlled territory in war-torn Yemen, Davis said, adding that the guided-missile destroyer deployed “onboard defensive measures” and was undamaged.

“We will get to the bottom of this and we will make sure that anybody who interferes with freedom of navigation or anybody who puts U.S. Navy ships at risk does so at their own peril,” the Pentagon spokesman said.

It was obvious that Iran was delivering arms and artillery to Houthi rebels, he stated.

“The Houthis have said publicly before that they would target any ships in that area that were supporting the coalition against them,” Davis said, according to Reuters.

“So the facts certainly seem to point to it, but we are still assessing and we will have more for you,” he added.

Europe
No quick return to Schengen
[DeutscheWelle] The European Commission's hope to restore the Schengen system's border-free internal travel by the end of the year is looking bleak. As interior ministers met in Luxembourg Thursday, the overriding view was that it's not feasible to drop the emergency measures by mid-November when they are scheduled to end.

The controls were put in place by Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden in the midst of the migration crisis as countries sought to manage the influx of hundreds of thousands of people. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told journalists upon arrival in Luxembourg Thursday that it's "right we should extend the possibility of border controls on a European basis." They can only be renewed up to a total of two years.

"We want to go back to a control-free Schengen," de Maiziere insists, "but for that we have to have better protection of external borders." Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka added that "reality" dictates a prolongation, with 50,000 refugees in Greece and many more in the Balkans. "I can hardly imagine that the system will be functioning on November 15," Sobotka said. "I think it will probably be necessary to have an extension or we have to think of other steps."

But prolonged blockage of free movement will be anything but free, according to a new study by the RAND Europe research Institute. Commissioned by the European Parliament to "investigate the economic, social and political costs of 'non-Schengen''', the report warns leaders the annual cost of permanently re-establishing border controls could be as high as 2‐3 billion euros ($2.2-3.6 billion) every year. That's after one-time costs that could range up to 19 billion euros "depending on the timeframe."

Interior ministers are discussing agreements with Æthiopia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
that involve - openly acknowledged by some member governments but not the European Commission - the exchange of funds to be used for development in exchange for progress to block migrant outflows and take back failed asylum-seeker citizens.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Frees US Journalist who Fled Syria
[AnNahar] The Turkish authorities have released an American journalist detained for the last two months after she fled Syria claiming to have been kidnapped by jihadists, a senior US official said on Thursday.

Lindsey Snell is returning to the United States, the official said.

She was locked away
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
on August 6 for "violating a military zone" after she returned from war-torn Syria, where she said she had been filming civilians affected by air strikes.

Snell's Twitter biography identifies her as an Istanbul-based video journalist who has contributed to several western networks and news organizations including MSNBC, Vice News and ABC.

On Facebook, she describes herself as hailing from Daytona Beach, Florida and to have graduated from the University of Florida in 2005. She is a Moslem and wears a headscarf in pictures.

The Committee to Protect Journalists press freedom watchdog welcomed Snell's release.

"Lindsey Snell's release is a relief, but scores of journalists are still incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
," the New York-based group's Nina Ognianova said, adding that Turkish police had raided Snell's Istanbul apartment, confiscating a video camera, computers and other equipment.

"We call on Turkish authorities to return Snell's confiscated equipment, and to free all the journalists still behind bars in the country for doing their jobs."

Writing on Twitter before her arrest, Snell referred to having been kidnapped for 10 days by jihadists from the al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front -- which has changed its name to Fateh al-Sham
...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant...
Front -- before escaping with the aid of a "brave man on a cycle of violence."

On her Facebook page, she said she had been able to document her time in captivity with her cellphone.

"It's a crazy story," she wrote.

"A cave prison (the previous tenant of my cell had marked his days in residence in blood on the walls), masked villains, cycle of violence escapes and disguises. I can't wait to share the details."

Snell was arrested as she crossed the border back into Turkey's southern Hatay province, which is located near Syria's Aleppo governorate -- currently the scene of fierce fighting between Russian-backed Syrian regime forces and rebel groups.

On her return flight to New York on Wednesday, Snell said she was concerned about her husband Suliman Wardak, who was also arrested in Turkey after traveling there to help with her case, The Guardian newspaper reported.

"They still have my husband. I don't feel free," the newspaper reported her as saying.

Turk judges suspended over

Turkey dismisses over 100 military judges

Turkey has dismissed 109 military judges as part of the fight against the movement of Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of being involved in the July 15 coup attempt, the Turkish newspaper Haber 7 reported Oct. 13.

So far 259 military judges have been dismissed in the country as part of the fight against the Gulen movement.

Turkey suspends over 180 judges, prosecutors over FETO

Nearly 200 judges and prosecutors have been suspended from their duties for using a smartphone messaging app linked to the July 15 coup attempt, Turkey’s top judicial board announced Thursday, Anadolu reported.

A total of 184 judges and prosecutors have been temporarily removed from duty pending the conclusion of an investigation, the Turkish Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) said.

ByLock is said to have been used by members of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which the government has said was behind the attempted takeover, which martyred 241 people and wounded nearly 2,200 others.

The app is believed to have been cracked by Turkish security agencies before the coup, prompting the plotters to switch to the WhatsApp messaging service but not before tens of thousands of FETO suspects had been identified.

Home Front: WoT
Bomber Ahmad Khan Rahami pleads not guilty in police shootings
[Ynet] A man accused of setting off bombs in New Jersey and New York, injuring more than 30 people, pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
on Thursday to charges he tried to kill coppers before they captured him.

An attorney for Ahmad Khan Rahami
...the probably Taliban-trained Afghan-American whose various bombs in New York and New Jersey caused havoc last month...
entered the pleas as Rahami appeared via video from his hospital bed in Newark. It was Rahami's first public appearance since last month's bombings and police chase.

Rahami, an Afghan-born US citizen, has been hospitalized with gunshot wounds since a police shootout that led to his capture on Sept. 19 outside a bar in Linden. His head was propped up on pillows, while public defender Peter Liguori stood by his side wearing a disposable hospital gown and plastic gloves.

Rahami, 28, is charged with five counts of attempted murder of a police officer and weapons offenses. He was read his rights by Judge Regina Caulfield and answered "yes" in a faint voice to a series of questions she asked him.

Pakistan seeks bigger Saarc to counter India’s influence
[DAWN] Pakistain is exploring the possibility of creating a greater South Asian economic alliance to counter India’s controlling hold on the eight-member South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc), diplomatic observers say.

A parliamentary delegation from Pakistain, which is now in New York, pitched this idea during its five-day visit to Washington last week.

"A greater South Asia is already emerging," said Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, in one of his interactions with the media. "This greater South Asia includes China, Iran and the neighbouring Central Asian republics."

He described the China-Pakistain Economic Corridor as the key economic route linking South Asia with Central Asia. The Gwadar port, he pointed out, would be the nearest warm water port, not only for China but also for the land-locked Central Asian states.

"We want India to join this arrangement as well," said Mr Hussain, an offer Indians are unlikely to accept as they are comfortable with the advantage that Saarc provides them.

Last month, India used its influence in Saarc to isolate Pakistain when it announced that it would not attend the regional group’s 19th summit, scheduled in Islamabad on Nov 15 and 16.

US urges Pakistan to shut down access to terrorists
[DAWN] The United States (US) State Department on Wednesday urged Pakistain to "shut down access to areas inside their borders to terrorists".

State Department Spokesperson John Kirby in a press briefing, when asked to comment on recent remarks by Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
on Pakistain, responded by saying, "I'm not going to dignify the comments of an avowed terrorist one way or the other."

He added, "We continue to work with Pakistain and continue to urge Pakistain to take steps to shut down access to areas inside their borders to terrorists, to terrorist individuals and to terrorist groups."

The US has previously also asked Pakistain to take action against militancy.

Earlier, during a State Department briefing in August, deputy spokesperson Mark Toner said, "We’ve been very clear with the highest levels of the government of Pakistain that they must target all Death Eater groups, and that includes those that target Pakistain’s neighbours, and they must also close all safe havens."

"We obviously believe that Pakistain needs to do all it can to confront all Death Eaters operating on its soil," he said, adding, "We’ve seen it make progress; we want to see more progress on its part."

PPP leader Aitzaz during a joint session of parliament last week was of the view that Pakistain was isolated because it gave freedom to non-state actors.

"The government has been completely unsuccessful in imposing restrictions on non-state actors according to the National Action Plan."

US Slams Pakistan for Linking Afghan Peace to Kashmir
[Tolo News] The U.S on Wednesday dismissed the recent attempt over linking of peace in Afghanistan with resolution of Kashmire issue and defended India's "right to self-defense" after the recent attack on an Indian military base, Times of India reported.

The White House backed India's right to defend itself as with any other country, in view of the recent surgical strike but advised caution given the heavy militarization between the two neighbors.

"We certainly do not believe that the situation in Afghanistan is linked with Kashmire," the top White House official said.

It also said that that the US is making every effort to ensure that India becomes a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) by the end of this year.

Making a rare appearance before a Washington audience, Peter Lavoy, the White House's point person for South Asia, said that India-US ties are the "most dynamic relationship" for the US as he listed the B.O. regime's achievements in strengthening the relationship between the two largest democracies of the world.

"It was a clear case of cross-border terrorism. We condemned this act of terrorism. It was a horrific attack ‎ Every country has a right to self-defense. But in a heavily militarized relationship that has also experienced three wars, there is indeed a need for caution and restraint," he said responding to a question on the Uri attack.

"We share with India, the concern for preventing any future attack. We empathize with the Indian position that it needs to respond militarily to cross-border threat of terrorism. But we also advise caution," Lavoy said.

India and Pakistain have a "friction-filled relationship" and they have not found a way to overcome that, he said.

Last week, Lavoy met the two special envoys of Pakistain's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
on Kashmire.

The two Pak envoys in their public meetings had linked peace in Afghanistan to resolving the Kashmire issue.

Just as we thought about the Iran nuclear deal. Podesta might be a closet-case R-burger. There's a great deal, some might say "Gold Mine" of information in the WikiLeaks releases. Just difficult wading through them due to the volume.

Kerry, Lavrov to resume Syria talks amid Aleppo row
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
will meet his Russian counterpart in Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
on Saturday to discuss Syria, officials said on Wednesday, as a devastating bombing campaign of the city of Aleppo intensified.

The Syrian government launched an assault to capture rebel-held areas of Aleppo last month with Russian air support and Iranian-backed militias, a week into a ceasefire agreed by Washington and Moscow.

Kerry broke off talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last week over the offensive, which has included air strikes on hospitals that the United States and La Belle France said amounted to war crimes for which Syria and Russia were responsible.

The Syrian and Russian governments blamed their foes for breaking the ceasefire and said they target only Lions of Islam in the city, the last major urban stronghold of the Western-backed rebels, where more than 250,000 people are trapped under siege.

The resumption of talks, despite the offensive, was a sign of the lack of options facing Western nations over the Syria conflict, where they worry scaled-up arms supplies for the rebels could end up in the hands of krazed killer groups.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Kerry and Lavrov would meet in the Swiss city of Lausanne to consider steps toward settling the conflict. The meeting was expected to include foreign ministers from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Ranks of Kurd alliance swells with new recruits
[ARA News] Hasakah – A main brigade of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) joined on Thursday the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-Arab alliance that has been fighting ISIS in northern Syria for more than a year.

In a press conference in Hasakah, the Free Officers Union announced deserting the FSA ranks and joining the Syrian Democratic Forces.

“We are now witnessing the gradual collapse of the Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups [in reference to FSA] after their cooperation with Turkey. Those groups have been fighting the Syrian people on behalf of Turkey. They’ve been implementing the Turkish agenda in Syria instead of fighting for the people’s freedom,” Deputy Chief of Free Officers Union, Hussam al-Awak, said in the conference.

“From now on we’ll be working together with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to continue this revolution against terror and tyranny,” al-Awak said.

The Free Officers Union includes hundreds of fighters in different parts of Syria.

“We have forces in the Qalamoun region (in southern Syria) and different parts of the country’s northern region. We cannot provide further information about our upcoming operations and movements. We are in fight on different fronts, we’ll combat different radical factions,” al-Awak added.

Official spokesman of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Talal Silo, told ARA News that they have welcomed the new batch of FSA rebels in their ranks.

“Today’s press conference is held to announce the defection of a group of military leaders from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) after deep rifts in the FSA ranks about their agenda. Those leaders and their fighters, headed by Commander Hussar al-Awak, are joining our SDF ranks,” Silo said.

“This is the largest group of fighters joining our [SDF] ranks,” Silo told ARA News. “With the presence of those highly trained and professional military leaders and fighters, the Syrian Democratic Forces will continue its progress and liberate all areas held by ISIS terrorists. We are determined to eliminate ISIS on the Syrian soil.”
