Harvard Org to Honor CAIR Founder
[FreeBeacon] Nihad Awad and CAIR have been criticized for support of Hamas.

Harvard University's largest student-run organization will bestow a prestigious award Friday night on the founder and executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which has ties to extremist and terror organizations.

The Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA) will be giving its Robert Coles "Call of Service" award to Nihad Awad, for his work to "defend the rights of Muslims" and for advancing "justice and mutual understanding."

An online petition with over 500 signatures outlines the concerns some have with Awad, including the fact that he and the organization he created were named as unindicted co-conspirators in the 2007 Holy Land Foundation terror-financing case. Five Holy Land Foundation executives were found guilty of funneling millions of dollars to the terror group Hamas.

Awad also explicitly stated his support for the "Hamas movement" during a 1994 speech, write the petitioners.

Prior to founding CAIR, Awad worked as the public relations director for the Islamic Association of Palestine, which the petition notes was directly linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.

"While CAIR presents itself as a civil rights organization defending Muslims from discrimination, Awad's organization has been criticized by many Muslims for claiming to speak in their name," write the petitioners, citing a Gallup poll that showed fewer than 15% of Muslims think of CAIR as their voice.

Zainab Al-Suwaij, cofounder and executive director of the American Islamic Congress, said she was surprised a liberal university would give such an honor to an organization with CAIR's history of ties radical Islamism.

"Especially considering the moment we are in right now, where we are all concerned with violent extremism and radicalization, in particular that of radical Islam," said Al-Suwaij.

Al-Suwaij believes her organization, founded in the wake of 9/11 following what she described as disappointment with the her community's "very defensive response," is more representative of the average American-Muslim than CAIR.

"We have no history of supporting political Islam, and we don't share CAIR's victimhood [mentality]," she said. "CAIR jumps at every occasion to play the Islamophobia card. We don't."

A CAIR spokesperson did not respond to request for comment by press time.

Previous recipients of the "Call of Service" award include former Vice President Al Gore, Black Lives Matter cofounder Alicia Garza, Civil Rights activist Bob Moses, and TransGriot founding editor Monica Roberts.

PBHA and Harvard spokespeople did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

Afghanistan moves to block WhatsApp, Telegram messaging services
[AlAhram] Afghanistan's telecoms regulator wrote to internet service providers this week ordering them to block the messaging services WhatsApp and Telegram but it was not immediately clear whether they had complied.

Use of social media and mobile instant messaging services has went kaboom! in Afghanistan over recent years. Social media users and civil rights groups reacted with outrage to initial reports of the move and the letter sent by telecoms regulator ATRA was widely shared on social media.

Some media reports, citing unidentified sources, said the move had been ordered by the National Directorate for Security to thwart the use of the encrypted messaging services by the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and other holy warrior groups.

It was not immediately possible to confirm the reports.

The acting minister for telecommunications, Shahzad Aryobee, posted a message on Facebook saying that the telecoms regulator had been ordered to put a gradual block on the services to improve their functioning after complaints had been received.

"The government is committed to freedom of speech and knows that it is a basic civil right for our people," he wrote.

The letter by telecoms regulator ATRA, dated Nov. 1 and signed by an official of the regulator, directed internet companies to block Telegram and Facebook Inc's WhatsApp services "without delay" for a period of 20 days.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
the service worked normally this week and still appeared to be working normally on Saturday on both state-owned operator Salaam and private service providers.

On Friday, there were reports of interruptions but it was not clear whether they were caused by a deliberate shutdown or by the unrelated issues with WhatsApp services that were experienced in several countries.

Mobile phone services have been one of the big success stories in Afghanistan since the Taliban were ousted from power by a U.S.-led campaign in 2001, but there are also frequent complaints from users about quality and coverage.

WhatsApp and similar services, including Facebook Messenger and Viber, are widely used by Afghan politicians and members of the government as well as by the Taliban, which has a sophisticated social media operation of its own.

The movement's main front man, Zabihullah Mujahid, wrote to news hounds this week giving his Viber number "in case WhatsApp is not working".

#1  ...The trouble is, this is Afghanistan. They could be trying to keep the Talibs from communicating, or they could be trying to suppress opinions they just don't fecking like, or it could be a combination of the two.

Unknown Group Claims Oct. 20th Egypt Police Ambush
[AnNahar] An unknown jihadist group has claimed a deadly October 20 ambush that killed at least 16 Egyptian coppers in a statement published Friday on Death Eater Islamist social media channels.

The statement purporting to be from a group called Ansar al-Islam -- or "Supporters of Islam" -- also said one of its leaders, Emad al-Din Abdel Hamid, was killed in Egyptian air strikes after the ambush.

The statement could not be independently verified.

No other group has grabbed credit for the attack on police last month that saw assailants gun down officers in a shootout between Cairo and the Bahariya oasis in the Western Desert, a rare flare-up outside Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

The military said on October 31 and November 1 that it had tracked and killed all the attackers in desert raids and liberated a police officer taken hostage during the ambush.

Egyptian police have for years been seeking a Death Eater named Emad al-Din Abdel Hamid, a former military officer turned jihadist.

He is believed to have joined a fellow officer, Hisham el-Ashmawy, in Libya following the 2013 military ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.

Ashmawy, who split with an Egyptian jihadist group that claimed allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group in 2014, is thought to be aligned with al-Qaeda.

Egypt believes the bandidos faceless myrmidons have been plotting attacks from the jihadist stronghold of Derna in Libya.
I thought that lot were associated with ISIS in Libya and Ansar Bayt al Maqdis/ISIS in the Sinai in Egypt... but perhaps things are changing with the fall of the ISIS caliphate.
Since Egypt's army removed Morsi from power in 2013, bad boy groups have increased their attacks on the military and police.

Authorities are fighting against the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State group in the north of the Sinai peninsula, over 500 kilometres away from the scene of the October ambush.

Bahrain urges its nationals to leave Lebanon immediately
The Kingdom of Bahrain urged its nationals residing in Lebanon to leave immediately and to "exercise caution.”

It also called on Bahrainis not to travel to this country.

The call came a day after Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his resignation.

The Bahraini foreign ministry said in a statement received by AFP that its call was "in the interest of its citizens’ safety and to avoid any risks they may be exposed due to the conditions and developments” that Lebanon is going through.

Turkey frees German jailed for 'political reasons'
[DW] Another German national who had been held in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
for "political reasons" has been released from jail, the German Foreign Ministry said. Nine German citizens still remain behind bars in Turkey amid diplomatic tensions.

The German Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that authorities in Turkey released another German national from jail.

Spokesman Rainer Breul said that the person had been held for "political reasons" and that he or she is not permitted to leave Turkey at this time.
Another one merely out on bail rather than imprisoned for the duration of the trial.
The freed detainee asked authorities not to release his or her identity, but the foreign ministry front man said that he or she had been released on October 22.

Breul noted that nine other German citizens are still in jug in Turkey. The only detainees who have been named are Die Welt newspaper correspondent Deniz Yucel and journalist Mesale Tolu.

[Ynet] Two New Jersey mosques in the city where the suspect in the New York City bike path terror attack lived are receiving threats.

The Islamic Center of Passaic County says it has gotten eight telephone threats to burn the center down and kill its occupants, prompting extra police patrols in the area.

NorthJersey.com quotes Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale as saying the Omar Mosque, where suspect Sayfullo Saipov is reported to have prayed, also received threats. Officials there did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan returns helicopters given by US to monitor Durand Line
[Khaama] Pakistain has returned nine helicopters provided by the United States to monitor the Durand Line, it has been reported.

According to the local media reports, the helicopters were given to Pakistain in 2002 and were used by the ministry of interior of Pakistain.

Pak officials have told local media outlets that the helicopters were also used during the Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
operation and different anti-narcotics operations.

According to the officials, the helicopters also assisted the ministry in counter-terrorism operations and their return will affect all operations, including the monitoring of the Pakistain-Afghanistan border.

The main reason behind the return of the helicopters has not been announced by the Pak officials so far which comes as the relations between Islamabad and Washington strained due to the presence of the terror groups and their safe havens in the country.

The relations between the two countries is at an all time low since the US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
announced his administration’s strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia.

While announcing the US strategy late in August, the US President Donald Trump strongly criticized Pakistain regarding the terror sanctuaries, saying "For its part, Pakistain often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence, and terror. The threat is worse because Pakistain and India are two nuclear-armed states whose tense relations threaten to spiral into conflict. And that could happen."

Indian govt told to investigate 2,080 unmarked mass graves in held Kashmir
[Dawn] The state-run human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
commission in India-held Kashmire, on information from a human rights group, has told the government to investigate at least 2,080 unmarked mass graves discovered in border areas of the restive region, reported Al Jazeera on Friday.

According to the Doha-based media network, the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP), a human rights group in Kashmire, told the commission there were 3,844 unmarked graves ‐ 2,717 in Poonch and 1,127 in Rajouri ‐ along the contentious Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed territory between Pakistain and India.

The commission acknowledged the presence of the 2,080 unmarked graves, Al Jazeera reported, asking the government for a comprehensive investigation to be completed in six months, including DNA tests of the bodies to compare it with family members of the disappeared.

According to APDP, 8,000 people have disappeared in the decades-old conflict between the two neighbouring countries. The association accused government forces of staging shootouts to cover up killings, said the Al Jazeera report.

"We have been demanding that there be an independent commission to do a credible probe on the mass graves," Khurram Parvez from APDP told Al Jazeera. "We have done a study of 53 cases for a report where the bodies were exhumed from unknown graves. It was found that 49 bodies in the graves were of civilians and one was a local bad boy, three bodies were unknown. These people were dubbed as foreign Lions of Islam by the government."

In 2011, the Jammu Kashmire State Human Rights Commission had confirmed that thousands of bullet-riddled bodies had been dumped in unmarked graves ‐ many of them mass graves ‐ in India-held Kashmire.

The findings had revealed that of the more than 2,000 bodies found, at least 574 were local residents.

Al Jazeera's report, quoting the APDP, said that since 2011, the Indian government has failed to comply with directions from the human rights commission and instead, continues to avoid an investigation on the pretext it would lead to a "law and order problem" in Kashmire.

Similarly in 2008, human rights group International People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice had found unmarked graves containing several thousand bodies during a three-year survey of dozens of villages in India-held Kashmire. At the time, the group had calculated that 8,000 people had gone missing in the 20-year separatist insurgency.

IDF denies involvement in Syrian suicide attack, vows to protect Druze
[Ynet] Denying allegations made by pro-Syrian regime figures, IDF says it was not involved in rebel attack on Druze village of Hader; Syrian rebel forces habitually, intentionally operate near border with Israel; IDF possesses several plans to counteract possible Hader takeover, including cross-border ground operation.

In light of the Syrian accusations levied against the IDF for supposedly helping rebel forces carry out a suicide kaboom in the Syrian Druze village of Hader Friday, the army published an extraordinary announcement saying it was "Ready and willing to assist the people of the village and would prevent Hader from being harmed or occupied out of a sense of commitment to the Druze people."

National Security Advisor Meir Ben-Shabbat made the same point to the Israeli Druze community's spiritual leader Mowafaq Tarif, telling him Israel will not allow terrorist elements to overtake Hader.

Navy implements smart sonar to battle Hamas naval commando
[Ynet] With land and air defenses covered by Iron Dome and the Gazoo underground obstacle, IDF implements special precise sonar to defend against possible Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", commando incursion by sea.

The Israeli Navy is currently implementing the "Simba", a mobile sonar for precise location in shallow waters, designed to quickly and precisely identify terrorist infiltrations into Israel by sea, mainly from the Gazoo Strip.

Three and a half years since the last naval incursion into the Zikim Beach just north of the Gazoo Strip during the Operation Protective Edge, the IDF estimates that Hamas' naval commando has improved dramatically and already includes hundreds of trained fighters equipped with advanced diving systems.

In light of the proven capabilities of Iron Dome against rockets, and against the backdrop of the underground anti-tunnel obstacle and its related technologies whose effectiveness were proven this earlier week in the destruction of the terror tunnel in the southern Gazoo border, it is estimated that in the next confrontation Hamas will invest its efforts, apparently at the outset, in penetrating Israel by sea.

An underwater sensor system for initial warning of divers was deployed at the bottom of the border two years ago, but despite this, the soldiers of the 916th Ashdod navy patrol squadron were still forced to gear up for dozens of false alarms due to the sensor's imprecise identification.

The new sonar is expected to be vastly superior to the one currently in use: it is mounted on a small and fast Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, and can identify in real time, within a radius of many kilometers, who is an enemy combatant among hundreds of marine mammals, miscellaneous submerged objects and civilian divers.

"Within minutes, we will be able to identify the threat and act against it while still in the water, and eliminate it using grenades and other bombs," an navy officer told Ynet. "Its use will also prevent unnecessary harm to animals that live in water, such as sea turtles."

"This is a sensitive and precise sonar that was originally developed for sea port security," the officer noted. "We made adjustments that allow us to use it in the open sea. Currently the sonar is installed in the southern marine sector, but later on we will be able to use it at all our shores, including the Gulf of Eilat."

The officer added that the sonar could analyze and focus on even the smallest of signals, and could resolve the IDF's weak points in this area.

"The enemy is looking for weak points through which it can penetrate our territory, and the underwater route is a complex area with great potential," he said. "On the other hand, we are currently invested in bolstering our defenses on this front. There are no countries in the world that deal with this issue with the same intensity with which we are dealing."

#1  ...IIRC - perhaps some of our 'Burgers with time in the Navy could clarify - a 'Yankee Search' (the classic 'sonar' sound from movies and TV) can and will do serious damage to a swimmer at close range. So perhaps the Israelis have adapted a sonar to do just that.

#2  I suspect it is some kind of computer integrated passive sonar array. Sounds propagate a long way in water.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hariri Drops Bombshell, Announces Resignation from Govt over Iran's 'Influence'
[AnNahar] Prime Minister Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
on Saturday, in an unforeseen move, announced his resignation from the Lebanese government, stressing that "Iran's hands in the region will be cut off."

In a televised appearance from Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, Hariri said: "Wherever Iran is present it plants discord and destruction attested to by its interference in the Arab countries."

Hariri added: "Iran is driven by deep hatred on the Arab nation. Unfortunately, it has found some of our sons who are putting their hands in its and trying to seize Leb from its Arab surroundings.

"In recent years, Hizbullah

has used the power of its weapons to impose a fait accompli," he said, reading a speech from behind a desk.

"I would like to tell Iran and its followers that they have lost and their hands in the region will be cut off. I promised you that I will seek to unite the Lebanese, end the political division and establish the principle of self dissociation," added the Premier.

Citing Iran's "grip" on the country and threats to his life, Hariri added: "There is a state of frustration, fragmentation and divisions. We are witnessing a climate similar to the atmosphere that was felt before the liquidation of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri."

"I felt what was being covertly plotted to target my life," Hariri said.

"I announce my resignation from the post of prime minister with my certainty that the will of the Lebanese is stronger and their will be able to overcome the tutelage from inside and outside," he said in a speech broadcast from Saudi Arabia by the al-Arabiya news network.

The two-time prime minister, whose father Rafik was assassinated when he held the same position in 2005, accused Iran and Hizbullah of seeking hegemony in the region.

The 47-year-old Sunni politician's resignation comes less than a year after his government, to which Hizbullah's political wing belongs, was formed.

"Iran has a grip on the fate of the region's countries... Hizbullah is Iran's arm not just in Leb but in other Arab countries too," he said.

"In recent years, Hizbullah has used the power of its weapons to impose a fait accompli," he said, reading a speech from behind a desk.

group and armed opposition movements.

It enjoys broad support from Iran and is the only Lebanese party to have kept its weapons after the 1975-1990 civil war.

Its arsenal has since grown exponentially and now outstrips that of the nation's own armed forces.

It claims it is the only credible rampart against neighboring Israel and its refusal to disarm is the main political crux in Leb.

Hizbullah members have been accused over the 2005 liquidation in a massive boom-mobile blast of Rafik Hariri, the dominant figure of Leb's post-war political landscape.

Riyadh is Iran's main regional rival and the two powers' tussle for influence has played out in ongoing conflicts in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

Report says Lebanese PM survived attempt to kill him days before he quit

as he traveled in Beirut earlier this week; Hariri resigned saying he fears for his life

An liquidation attempt on Leb’s prime minister Saad Hariri was reportedly thwarted just days before he announced his resignation during a trip to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. on Saturday, citing threats on his life.

The plot was reported by Saudi Arabia’s al-Arabiya news station, citing unnamed sources, and occurred "a couple of days ago." It did not say who tried to kill him.

The report gave few details except to quote a source as saying "the planners of Hariri’s liquidation attempt disrupted the watchtowers (control towers) when his convoy was passing by." It was not immediately clear what they were referring to.

The report came hours after Hariri announced he would resign in a surprise move that plunged the country into uncertainty amid heightened regional tensions.
