Afghanistan and Pakistan sign MoU to fight against terrorism
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Afghanistan and Pakistain on Saturday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to step up fight against terrorism.

Pakistain’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi said the Memorandum of Understanding was signed on the sidelines of the trilateral summit between Afghanistan, Pakistain, and China.

Speaking during a presser alongside his Afghan and Chinese counterparts, Mr. Qureshi said he visited Kabul to strengthen bilateral relations by bridging the trust gaps.

He said Pakistain supports Afghan grinding of the peace processor, emphasizing that Pakistain would benefit from peace and stability in Afghanistan.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Kabul and Islamabad have agreed to improve bilateral relations between the two nations.

Calling Afghanistan and Pakistain as strategic partners of China, Mr. Wang Yi said all three nations have agreed to step up fight against the terror groups.

He also called on Taliban
...Arabic for students...
group to accept the Afghan government’s offer for peace talks.

In his turn, the Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani said the second round of trilateral summit was organized with the focus to expedite joint efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.

Rabbani further added that the issues of fight against terrorism and political reconciliation in Afghanistan were discussed during the summit.

He expressed hopes that the second trilateral summit would yield positive results in coming weeks and months as he urged Pakistain to cooperate with the Afghan government in ongoing reconciliation efforts.

Ethnic violence in southern Ethiopia kills and wounds dozens
[Al Jazeera] At least 21 people have been killed in two days of intense fighting between ethnic groups in southern Æthiopia amid escalating violence that has sent hundreds fleeing across the border to neighbouring Kenya.

The violence broke out on Thursday and Friday near the town of Moyale, on the border with Kenya, in a region claimed by both the Oromo, the largest ethnic group in the country, and the Somali ethnic group.

The fighting also maimed 61 others, the state-affiliated Fana radio reported, citing the Oromia regional state communication office.

Outbreaks of violence in the south between Oromos and other groups escalated since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed - the first Oromo leader in Æthiopia's modern history - assumed office in April.

Egypt prosecutors investigating Minya killing of two Copts by police sergeant after 'altercation'
[AlAhram] Egypt’s general prosecution is investigating the murder of two Copts by a police sergeant who was guarding a church in Upper Egypt’s Minya this week.

In a statement, the prosecution a father and his adult son, identified as Emad Kamal and David Emad Kamal, were both shot by a police sergeant assigned to guard the Church of Nahdet El-Qadasa.

The statement said the Kamals were killed due to a "verbal altercation."

The prosecution’s statement is the first acknowledgement of the killings by the state since Archbishop Makarios of Minya released a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement by the vocal head of the local diocese, police sergeant Rabie Mostafa Khalifa killed the Kamals, who were removing debris next to the church, due to a "conflict."

In a series of tweets that followed, he called for an intervention by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, describing the incident as one which is "more dangerous than [that of] Saint Samuel Monastery," referencing a terrorist attack in which gunnies killed seven Copts on their way back from the monastery in November.

"Saint Samuel....was carried out by enemies of all of us. Yesterday’s attack was one carried out by a member of the interior ministry...someone who is assigned to guard people and institutions," he wrote.

Coptic Christians make up around 10 to 15 percent of Egypt's 104 million-strong population.

Coptic churches and other targets have been the target of deadly terrorist attacks in recent years, leaving dozens dead.

ISIS leaflets containing detailed terror attack plans found in Libya
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Libyan security authorities found leaflets containing plans by the ISIS bully boy group to carry out terrorist bombings targeting state headquarters, in addition to written threats to assassinate a number of security and military officials.

According to a statement released on Friday by the media office of the security directorate of the interim government’s interior ministry in al-Rajban city, the publications belonging to ISIS were found in a coffee shop, including threats to blow up and sabotage al-Zintan airport. It also had detailed plans to bomb the headquarters of security directorates, cop shoppes and other security services such as internal and external security and intelligence, in addition to assassinating security and military officials.

The statement did not specify the method of execution that ISIS planned to use in the alleged planned bombing, but since the emergence of the bully boy group in Libya, it has adopted methods based on boom-mobiles or jacket wallahs in its attacks.

Accordingly, Rajban’s security directorate announced a state of high alert and appealed to all police members to absent from work in all cities as well as military personnel who are not stationed to join their ranks and carry out their duties in order to maintain stability and security.

ISIS, which is still active in southern and central Libya, announced this year that it was responsible for several major terrorist attacks in various parts of Libya that killed dozens, namely security personnel.

Briton appealing Turkey terror sentence flees to UK: report
[Rudaw] LONDON, England, A former British soldier sentenced in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
for alleged links to a Kurdish militia in Syria has fled to Britannia, the BBC quoted him as saying on Friday.

Joe Robinson, 25, said he had "made the hard decision to take the matter into my own hands", according to the broadcaster.

Robinson was placed in durance vile
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
last year while holidaying in Turkey after he posted photos of himself in camouflage next to fighters from the People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria.

A court in the western city of Aydin in September sentenced him to seven-and-a-half years in prison for "membership of a terrorist organization," the private DHA news agency said.

Robinson did not attend the trial for health reasons, DHA said. He was held in jug in Turkey for four months but was on bail pending an appeal.

He has previously said he provided medical assistance in Syria.

"In Syria I managed to help civilians, and save lives. That, I believe, is no act of terrorism," he said.

The YPG is an ally of the United States in the fight against the Islamic State

group in Syria. But Ankara is hostile to the YPG, viewing it as a "terrorist offshoot" of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has been waging an insurgency in Turkey since 1984.

Robinson's Bulgarian fiancee, arrested along with him, was also sentenced to nearly two years in jail in September for "terrorist propaganda," but she is currently in Britannia, DHA said.

According to UK press reports, Robinson served with British armed forces in Afghanistan in 2012 and went to Syria in 2015 to work in the YPG's health unit.

Father of Strasbourg shooter says son supported Islamic State
[IsraelTimes] Abdelkrim Chekatt said he tried to convince Cherif Chekatt to quit backing terror group, went to police after attack fearing he was involved.

The man described as the father of the 29-year-old suspect in this week’s deadly Christmas market attack in Strasbourg says his son subscribed to the beliefs of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

The interview with Abdelkrim Chekatt by the state-run La Belle France 2 television channel was shown Saturday night, two days after the son was killed in a confrontation with three coppers in his childhood neighborhood in Strasbourg following a massive manhunt. Four people died in the Tuesday night attack. A dozen others were maimed.

The Christmas market in the eastern city of Strasbourg, seat of the European Parliament, is the largest in La Belle France. It reopened on Friday after being closed during the search for the suspect.

Chekatt said he had seen his son, Cherif Chekatt, three days before the attack but couldn’t contact him while he was on the run.

He acknowledged that his son backed the IS group.

"He’d say, for example, that ISIS, fights for the just cause and all that," the red-bearded father said, using the common term in La Belle France and elsewhere for the Islamic State group.

The interview, initially outdoors with the father, continued briefly inside with Cheriff Chekatt’s mother, Rouadja Rouag, who expressed shock and sorrow for the deaths. La Belle France 2 said the couple had been divorced for a long time.

Abdelkrim Chekatt, a French-Algerian, said he’d tried in the past to dissuade his son from backing the Islamic State, saying, "You don’t see the atrocities they commit." The son would reply that "it’s not them," the father said.

The father and mother and two siblings of the suspected killer were among seven people held for questioning. French media reported that the family members were released. The three others, still in jug, are unrelated but close to Chekatt.

The father said he went to police of his own accord and on a suspicion the night of the son’s rampage with a handgun and a knife.

He said he told police that "if ever you locate Cherif, tell me. I’ll go to him and try to reason with him to give up."

He also said that if his son had told him about a project to kill "I would have denounced him, and he wouldn’t have killed or been killed."

Is Strasbourg really a hotbed for violent Islamist extremists?
[TheLocal.fr] After the deadly Christmas market terrorist attack, there have been claims that the eastern city of Strasbourg and the area around it houses more Islamist Death Eaters than elsewhere in La Belle France. But is this really true?

Since the attacks, claims that the city and the Bas-Rhin department has more individuals known as 'fiche S' - essentially a French watchlist of people who represent a potential threat to national security, often just referred to as a terror watchlist - than the national average have been all over the French media.

The claims seem to come from the mayor of the city Roland Ries.

"It's true that we have statistically more 'fichés S' here in Strasbourg and in the Bas-Rhin department than the national average", the mayor of Strasbourg Roland Ries told La Belle France Inter on Friday when discussing why Strasbourg was the target of the latest terror attack to hit La Belle France.

A figure quoted several times by the city's mayor after the attack and in the media spoke of 10% of La Belle France's 'fiche S' criminals being found in Strasbourg and the Bas-Rhin department.

Another reason why there has been a focus on Islamist Death Eaters around the eastern region is that individuals from the Bas-Rhin department have made headlines in recent years for either travelling in groups to Syria to fight Jihad or playing a role in previous terror attacks in the country such as the attack on the Bataclan and this year's knife attack in the Opera area of Gay Paree.

The claims were used to suggest the city that borders Germany and its surrounding area was a breeding ground for potential jihadists.

But a closer look at statistics appears to show this isn't quite the case.

There are 26,000 individuals on the 'Fiche S' list in La Belle France.

Those included the 29-year-old gunman Cherif Chekatt who fired the crowd in the Strasbourg Christmas market and then hid in the city before being rubbed out by police in the Neudorf district on Thursday. Many others who have carried out terror attacks in La Belle France in recent years have also been on the Fiche S list.

Some of the individuals listed are radicalised like Chekatt was, but not all. The list also includes hooligans, anarchists and other people deemed to be a danger to national security.

French authorities don't release the figures for the number of 'fiche S' criminals for specific parts of La Belle France, so it is impossible to know whether or not there are more in the Bas-Rhin.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
since 2015, radicalised individuals have also been added to another watchlist called FSPRT, which has roughly 18,000 people on it. Chekatt was down on both lists.

This is probably where the confusion began.

The Bas-Rhin counts 224 people on the FSPRT watchlist, 110 of whom live in Strasbourg. While those figures are higher than the greater region of the Grand Est that encompasses Strasbourg and the Bas-Rhin, they are in fact lower than the national average.

"If you compare those figures nationally, they are 15.6 for 100 000 inhabitants and 13.2 for the inhabitants of the Bas-Rhin," Le Gay Pareeien reported.

The highest concentration of people on those lists is mostly found in the departments containing La Belle France's biggest cities.

So it seems that Strasbourg and the area around it doesn't house more dangerous or radicalised Islamist Death Eaters than other parts of La Belle France, despite what the city's mayor has claimed.

The Grand Turk
Turkey FM vows to continue strikes in Iraq if PKK isn't removed
[Rudaw] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
's Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded on Saturday that it will continue to do what is required to combat the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) presence in Iraq, if Baghdad continues to allow the group to remain.

In a statement regarding the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs decision to summon Ottoman Turkish Ambassador to Iraq Fatih Yildiz on Thursday, Ankara argued that Iraq is constitutionally obligated to prevent the use of its land as a base for attacks on neighboring countries.

"Activities of PKK terror group on Iraqi and Syrian soils have been a national security issue for Turkey," said Ottoman Turkish FM spokesperson Hami Aksoy, according to Anadolu Agency.

Ottoman Turkish jets bombed alleged PKK positions in Makhmour and Mount Shingal (also known as Sinjar) on Thursday night. Funerals were held on Friday.

More than 20 warplanes, accompanied by drones and refueling aircraft, went 165 kilometres into Iraqi territory, hitting the Mount Qarachogh area in Makhmour for the first time, the ministry announced on Friday.

Three women and a 14-year-old girl were killed in the Arclight airstrike on Makhmour, where more than 12,000 Kurdish political refugees from Turkey are sheltering.

"These counter-terror operations will continue as long as Turkey’s security needs require and terror organizations exist in Iraqi soils," the Ottoman Turkish front man added.

Yildiz was summoned, Baghdad argued, because the attacks were a violation of Iraqi illusory sovereignty and the security of its citizens were at risk.

The PKK is headquartered in the mountains of Qandil which straddle the border of Iraq, Turkey, and Iran.

Turkey has previously called the political refugee camp in Makhmour a "breeding ground for terrorists." PKK-linked elements reportedly remain active in Shingal. Earlier this year, then PM Haider al-Abadi called on all imported muscle to leave Shingal.

"Every kind of support is being given to Iraq in its fight against terror organizations. Same understanding and concrete cooperation are expected from Iraq," Aksoy added.

Despite Baghdad’s objections, they have little ability to stop Turkey, which carries out forays into Iraqi territory on a near daily basis.

The International Crisis Group has tracked casualties since a ceasefire stalled between PKK and the Ottoman Turkish state in July 2015.

According to their statistics last updated on December 10, 4,226 people in Turkey have been killed in festivities ‐ that includes: 2,400 PKK fighters, 1,138 state security forces, 465 civilians, and 223 youth of unknown affiliation.
The PKK has fought a nearly four-decade, sometimes-armed struggle against the Ottoman Turkish state seeking greater political, minority, and cultural rights.

The Ottoman Turkish FM further argued that they are justified to the right of self-defense per Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The Iraqi FM has not released a statement since the announcement to summon the ambassador.

#1  its a shame the PKK hasnt realized that they can get a lot better press if they would simply renounce Communism and say they were fighting for an "open and free society" and "self determination" against "Turkish ethnic cleansing and racism".

Little bit of PR goes a long way.

The whole Turkish-US alliance was based on the Kemalists, the Cold War and the Soviet Union. All are gone now, so the PKK has no need for Communism to curry support from the Soviets, and the US has no need for Turkey to be propped up against Turkish delusions of empire.

EU urges Turkey to refrain from ‘unilateral’ Syria move
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
’s foreign policy chief on Saturday asked The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
to forgo any unilateral military action in Syria, where Ankara has threatened a fresh offensive against a US-backed Kurdish militia.

"The statements of a possible Ottoman Turkish military operation in northeast Syria are a source of concern," Federica Mogherini said in a statement.

"We share the goal of ending violence, defeating terrorism and promoting stability in Syria and the wider region. We expect the Ottoman Turkish authorities therefore to refrain from any unilateral action likely to undermine the efforts of the Counter-ISIS Coalition or to risk further instability in Syria," she said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS krazed killer group.

President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
said Wednesday that Turkey will launch a new operation in Syria within days against Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia, which have Washington’s support but which Ankara considers a terrorist group.

The Pentagon warned Wednesday that any unilateral military action in northern Syria would be "unacceptable".

Mogherini, calling Turkey "a critically important actor in this crisis and in the region", said that "as the fight against ISIS is entering its final stages, all parties must work towards the goal of ensuring its upcoming defeat".

Iraqi fighters: Hezbollah not to be left alone in war
[PRESSTV] An Iraqi anti-terror paramilitary group has pledged to stand by Hezbollah in the event of a war following recent Israeli operations near the Lebanese border.

"In the event of any war against Hezbollah, the movement is not going to be alone," Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba front man Hashim al-Mousawi told Iran's Tasnim news agency on Friday.

The group, simply known as Nujaba, is part of Hashd al-Sha'abi which is an umbrella counter-terrorism force gathering volunteer fighters from Iraq's various ethnic groups, including Shias, Sunnis and Christians.

In the event of an attack on Leb's Hezbollah, "all, including Nujaba, will be standing by its side," Mousawi said.

Israel has recently launched an operation to destroy what it claims tunnels dug by Hezbollah into the occupied territories.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday warned that Hezbollah would be dealt "unimaginable blows" if it confronted the operation.

Hezbollah’s deputy secretary general Sheikh Naim Qassem

warned last week that there is no spot across Israel outside the range of the Lebanese resistance movement’s missiles.

"Israel is not capable of confronting Hezbollah’s missiles. The Paleostinian resistance is also advancing day by day. The resistance’s missile power is increasing," Mousawi said.

Nobel laureate Murad to build hospital with prize money in Iraq
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Nadia Murad, an Iraqi Yazidi woman held as a sex slave by ISIS bully boyz who won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, said on Friday she intended to use the prize money to build a hospital for victims of sexual abuse in her hometown.

The Yazidi survivor was speaking to a crowd of hundreds in Sinjar, her hometown in northern Iraq.

"With the money I got from the Nobel Peace prize, I will build a hospital in Sinjar to treat ill people, mainly widows and women who were exposed to sexual abuses by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bad boys," she told the crowd and gathered journalists.

She thanked the Iraqi and Kurdistan governments for agreeing to her plan and said she would be contacting humanitarian organizations "soon" to start construction.

Murad was awarded the $1 million prize alongside Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.

She was one of about 7,000 women and girls captured in northwest Iraq in August 2014 and held by Islamic State in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, where she was tortured and raped.

She escaped after three months and reached Germany, from where she campaigned extensively to appeal for support for the Yazidi community.

The Yazidi area in Sinjar had previously been home to about 400,000 people, mostly Yazidis and Arab Sunnis.

In a matter of days, more than 3,000 Yazidis were killed and about 6,800 kidnapped, either sold into slavery or conscripted to fight for Islamic State as the religious minority came under attack.

Photos of Khomeini, Khamenei inside an Iraqi official’s office spark controversy
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A picture of Baghdad council member , Ali Jaafar al-Alaq, has sparked a debate over the past couple of days between Iraqis on Twitter, even though it was captured from an old videotape.

Al- Alaq appeared in the picture sitting in his official office, in front of a small poster reading "Member of the Baghdad Provincial Council", while pictures of the two Iranian leaders Ali Khomeini and Ali Khamenei, were posed next to him , as well as a machine gun.

Iraqis took to social media to slam the official for glorifying foreign figures by putting their pictures in an office of the Iraqi state. One commentator wondered, "Is this not the biggest evidence of dependence on Iran?"

This comes two days after al-Alaq criticized the provincial council elections.

He claimed that the Baghdad council’s election, which was held on Wednesday, was headed by a member who is included in the de-Baathification process, noting that one third of the members of the council were not present at the meeting.

"The meeting was subject to constitutional violation and I will challenge it in the Federal Court," he added.

The provincial council of Baghdad has elected Fadhil al-Shuwaili as governor of Baghdad, succeeding Atwan al-Atwani, who became a member of parliament.

Australia recognizes west Jerusalem as Israel’s capital
[NYPOST] Australia has decided to formally recognize west Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, but won’t move its embassy until there’s a peace settlement between Israel and the Paleostinians, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Saturday.

Morrison said in a speech that Australia would recognize east Jerusalem as Paleostine’s capital only after a settlement has been reached on a two-state solution. The Australian Embassy won’t be moved from Tel Aviv until such a time, he said.

While the embassy move is delayed, Morrison said his government would establish a defense and trade office in Jerusalem and would also start looking for an appropriate site for the embassy.

Hamas displays apparent truck-mounted rockets at parade to mark its founding
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian terrorist group Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, on Saturday marked the 31st anniversary of its establishment with a military-style parade near the southern Gazoo Strip city of Khan Younis.

The group showcased various weapons, such as what appeared to be rockets mounted on trucks, as well as elite unit members and snipers.

It was not clear whether the weapons on display were real and operational.
...but I know how I’m betting.

'Hezbollah evades Israeli bombs in Syria by flying Russian flag'
[Ynet] With Moscow smarting over losing plane during IAF attack in Syria, Russian newspaper says Kremlin made deal with Tehran that gives Iranian allies full protection.

Moscow is allowing fighters from Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian Shiite groups operating in Syria to carry Russian flags in order to protect them from Israeli Arclight airstrikes, Russia's Kommersant newspaper reported Wednesday.

The report follows a Russian snub earlier this week to Israeli military officials, as Moscow appears reluctant to ease its anger over the loss of one of its planes during an IAF bombing raid in Syria in September. The plane was brought down by Syrian missiles targeting the Israelis, but Moscow insists that Jerusalem did not provide sufficient warning of its strike to allow its aircraft to reach safety.

Russian flags were recently seen near the military airport in the Syrian city of Hama, where Iranian installations were attacked by the IAF in the past. The flags were also flying in the cities of Homs and Idlib, as well as in the Syrian desert.

According to the report, Israel complained to Russia that its flags were spotted atop compounds and military convoys belonging to Iran and its allies in Syria. The complaint came ahead of a senior Israeli military delegation visit to Moscow on Tuesday.

According to Syrian opposition leader Colonel Petach Hasson, the Iranians promised to coordinate with the Russian military’s Syrian headquarters in Latakia in exchange for protection for the Shiite militias allied to Iran operating in the war-torn country.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit declined to comment on the Russian report.

The IDF delegation's visit to Moscow on Tuesday was the first time that military officials from the Israel and Russia met since Israel Air Force Commander Amikam Norkin visited Moscow in September. Norkin went to Moscow to present the findings of an Israeli inquiry into how Syrian anti-aircraft shot down a Russian plane during an IAF air strike.

The Russian Defense Ministry rejected the Israeli findings and insisted that Israel bears responsibility for the plane’s downing, and all attempts by Israel’s government to reconcile with the Russians were rebuffed.

Over the past two weeks, the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem made frantic efforts to get their Russian counterparts to agree to host the Israeli delegation, led by the head of the IDF Operations Directorate, Major General Aharon Haliva. Following the meeting in Moscow, the Russians issued a brief statement emphasizing that nothing concrete had been agreed upon, except that the two sides would continue to hold discussions on security coordination in Syria.

PUTIN'S COLD SHOULDER
Although Russian President Vladimir Putin

The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
yielded to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pressure to receive the Israeli delegation, the Russians did not intend to actually resolve the crisis over the plane, as evidenced by the fact that Haliva didn’t get to meet his Russian counterpart. Instead, Haliva was matched with his counterpart's deputy, Major General Vasily Trushin, who is about to finish his term and is not actually involved in the Syrian crisis.

"Trushin is the only one in regular contact with Israel," said a senior military Israeli official.

Furthermore, the Russians set the date for the meeting knowing full well that their chief of military operations, chief of staff, defense minister, and a large part of the Russian military brass would not even be in the country during Haliva’s visit.

And the Russians are adamant in their refusal to reach an understanding with Israel on the issue.

"Our position remains unchanged. The chaotic damage done to Syrian infrastructure by the IAF, on the pretext of an Iranian threat, is unacceptable to us," said a senior source in the Russian Defense Ministry ahead of Tuesday's meeting.
