This Week In Guns, April 25th, 2015

Correction: Last week's TWIG said the standoff between Oathkeepers and elements of the Bureau of Land Management took place in Sugar Creek. The correct name is Sugar Pine.

Not certain at this point what all is going on in Oregon. For all its warts, in the Bundy Ranch standoff you knew a lot about what was going on. This time, not too much. It could be because Oathkeepers are keeping a tight lid on news in the area in an effort to forestall the embarrassment they suffered in Nevada at the hands of militias and patriots, so as a result we only know something is going on in Oregon, but not a lot about the specifics.

Oathkeepers seem to have a dual personality when it comes to incidents such as Bundy Ranch and Sugar Pine mine. On the one hand, you have the criticism that wherever Oathkeepers will be, you can find t-shirts, ball caps and application forms.

On the other hand, you have this, which appeared in Western Rifle Shooters Association:

Oathkeepers is learning from its past experiences and is becoming more effective at each engagement in its role as a FreeFor PR arm.

Don’t like the word PR? Well, the simple fact is that OK is a political, mindspace outfit. It is NOT a militia, nor does it have a military role, and if it, as an umbrella organization, tried to do both it would succeed at neither. The Ferguson defense is a great example of how they adjusted from previous mistakes to make that a PR win by combining the best mix of national and local assets. And, if they can do a good enough job with their PR role, the military side of things will keep gathering dust in the closet.

Fine by me, even if it means I don’t get to participate in their thing.

As a note for the newbies, Stewart Rhodes of the Oathkeepers wouldn’t piss on me to put me out if I was on fire, nor would he, because of my associations and stated objectives, want me within a hundred miles of any of their activities, and has, without reservation and in public, distanced himself from yours truly, individually.

So what?

In the past, I have had specific, objective criticisms, which they have now addressed, not as any deliberate reaction to my input, but as a refinement of their place in the FreeFor complex. What is more important to me is that Oathkeepers, after a few bumpy years, is now doing important work along its axis, especially among, and with, the rank-and-file membership, and deserves my support, and the support of anyone I can rally to their cause, completely independent of whether they might rally to mine.

I agree with the assessment, especially in view of how the Oathkeepers conducted themselves in Ferguson during the riots. Not sure that adding militias to the already volatile mix would have helped in that scenario.

The latest on the Oathkeepers project in Oregon can be found here and here.

Loads.

Afghanistan
Key Suspect in Farkhunda's Death Arrested
[Tolo News] The National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) has detained another suspect in connection with Farkhunda's brutal murder -- this time the motorist who drove over the dear departed.

An NDS official told TOLOnews on condition of anonymity that the suspect, Baryalai, was the person who drove the car over Farkhunda. After driving over her he continued accelerating, dragging her body under the car.

The source said Baryalai, who is from Kapisa province, is also suspected of having been part of the group that then threw Farkhunda's body into the Kabul River where they set her alight.

After the incident, the suspect apparently sold his car and fled Kabul to his village in Kapisa, the NDS official said.

Farkhunda, a 27-year-old woman, was beaten to death and burnt by angry mob a month ago on the false accusation of burning the Holy Koran.

She was brutally killed near the crowded Shah-e-Do Shamshera shrine of Kabul.

Kabul Police have detained more than 40 people including several coppers in connection with the case. The case files are currently being reviewed by the Attorney General's Office (AGO) and will be referred to the High Court next week.

Russia indignant over Polish pro-Putin biker ban
[RFE/RL] Russia's foreign ministry has protested Poland's decision to refuse entry to a group of Russian motorcyclists on a trip it says is meant to commemorate Soviet war victories during World War II. In a statement, the ministry said that it is "indignant" about Poland's decision on the bikers, who include members of the Night Wolves club that Putin has ridden with.

The Night Wolves, which are supported by the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church, planned to ride through Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria to reach Berlin on May 9. The plan has triggered protests in Poland.

The U.S. announced sanctions against the Night Wolves in December over the Crimean invasion, but they have not yet been blacklisted by the EU.

#2  "But, in order to have our false flag provocations, there are supposed to be attacks on the Night Wolves along the way. The provocateurs are already in place, running up expenses. You're ruining the event!"

#3  Methinks it's not so much that the Russians came through Poland on their way to Berlin. It's that they stayed in Poland.

Land of the free and the home of the brave?
H/t Instapundit
Posters promoting a "straight pride" week at a northeast Ohio university were removed this week after student leaders determined that the message went beyond free speech.

Youngstown State University student government leaders told WKBN-TV they decided to remove the posters after consulting with university officials....

Campus leaders said that while they believe the posters were meant as satire, the message was inappropriate.

#1  A message that goes beyond free speech? Interesting concept.

#2  As long as they were not threating or slandering how is it beyond free speech?
Posted by: chris || 04/25/2015 18:39 Comments || Top||

#3  It's not free speech because it's not approved goodthought.

I seriously expect none of these people have ever read Fahrenheit 451 or Brave New World. Or their like that idiot girl from those sparkly vampire movies who thinks 1984 is a tragic love story.
