Suspect caught in killing of Mississippi officer at station
[AP] Less than 24 hours after police say a Mississippi man gunned down a uniformed officer in police station parking lot, the now-arrested suspect was marched on Monday night back into the same Biloxi police station.

Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said one of his department’s officers was driving home through Wiggins, 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of the Gulf Coast city when the officer spotted a man at the side of the road who looked like the target of an intense manhunt.

That officer’s suspicions were on the money. He called Wiggins police who in turn arrested 19-year-old Darian Tawan Atkinson, wanted for capital murder in the slaying of Biloxi Patrolman Robert McKeithen.

Atkinson, tall and lanky in a blue and black baseball jersey, gave something close to a grin as officers yanked him from the back of a police cruiser and paraded him past watching reporters and cheering police officers back in Biloxi, only feet away from where McKeithen was gunned down after 10 p.m. Sunday night. The 23-year-veteran of the Biloxi force had been planning to retire this year.

"It’s been a long couple of days," said Miller, who told reporters he was going to bed as he got news of the capture. "We feel vindicated. He’s been treated properly and fairly. And now we will grieve for the family."

#1  Why don't they just shoot them ? Now the lawyers will get to work. Say it's the hundreds of years of slavery that offended him and he cracked. That the socialist schooling system wasn't socialist enough. Or Trump had something to do with it. Anything but black delinquency.

#2  We don’t want police going out of their way to shoot bad people, because sometimes they turn out to have been good people... or at least innocent of that particular charge. And because sometimes bad people really do learn to choose goodness in prison.

Dem donor, environmentalist, and Medline owner Wendy Abrams has a ethylene oxide problem
[The Intercept] WENDY ABRAMS HAS used her wealth to help protect the environment and public health. She’s the founder of a public art exhibit meant to raise awareness on climate change, and she serves on the boards of NRDC Action Fund and the Waterkeeper Alliance, and has been on the Environmental Defense Fund’s National Council. She helped found the Abrams Environmental Law Clinic at the University of Chicago, which trains students to address environmental injustices. Abrams was a major donor to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Rahm Emanuel, and she has railed against the Keystone Pipeline and air-polluting coal plants.

Abrams’s wealth comes from Medline, a company her great-grandfather founded in 1910. Today Medline is the largest privately held manufacturer and supplier of medical supplies in the United States, with over $10 billion in sales in 2018. Abrams is a principal shareholder in Medline and formerly served as the company’s director of corporate communications; her brothers and husband are now, respectively, Medline’s CEO, president, and chief operating officer.

But now, in an uncomfortable turn of events, Abrams finds herself on the other side of an environmental crisis ‐ affiliated with the polluter, rather than fighting on behalf of the polluted.

Nepotism is alive and well in that company.

#2  Ethylene oxide is a colorless, sweet-smelling gas used in production of ethylene glycol (antifreeze), used as a pesticide, and as a sterylizing agent on medical supplies.

NC woman allegedly trespasses at CIA, asks to speak to 'Agent Penis'
[WashingtonExaminer] A woman was arrested this week after trying four separate times to sneak into the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in northern Virginia to speak to "Agent Penis."

The criminal complaint described the May 3 incident involving Jennifer G. Hernandez, 58, from North Carolina: "Upon arrival, the defendant provided her Iowa identification card, requested to recover her North Carolina identification card, and requested to speak to Agent Penis."

After a review of records, Officer Mirko Peña who was not "Agent Penis" determined that "CIA police officers had encountered the defendant on several recent occasions, and had cited her for trespassing on the prior evening." Her last three appearances had been on consecutive days.

Hernandez was charged with criminal trespassing in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. She is currently being held in Alexandria city jail.

The CIA has not revealed the true identity of "Agent Penis."

CNN says 100 employees accepted voluntary buyouts in response to layoffs 'rumor'
[WashingtonExaminer] The news came after what alleged brain donor & goldfish swallowing champion CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter said was a "rumor" about layoffs.

"There's a rumor making the rounds today about big impending layoffs at CNN," Stelter tweeted Monday evening. "A CNN spokeswoman is knocking it down on the record: 'No layoffs.' There WERE voluntary buyouts throughout the organization, and about 100 people opted for it."
Attention fellow rats, the ship IS sinking
The buyouts also coincide with the first official broadcast of Pravda CNN from their new home base at 30 Hudson Yards in New York. CNN's move to the new location consolidates almost all of Warner Media together in a single building.

At least 55 dead after fuel tanker truck explodes near crowd
[ABCNEWS.GO] Authorities in the West African nation of Niger say at least 55 people are dead after a tanker truck filled with fuel went kaboom! near the country's main airport.

President Issoufou Mahamadou called the kaboom a "national tragedy" after visiting a hospital where dozens were maimed, some with serious burns. The corpse count was expected to rise as doctors said some were at death's door.

Authorities believe the kaboom took place after the tanker truck flipped over near a gas station.
Do tanker trucks regularly flip? I don’t recall ever seeing such a thing, but admittedly I’ve led a sheltered life in which tanker trucks to do not feature prominently.
A crowd of people came to try and collect the fuel that leaked out as a result of the accident.

Scores of people have died in similar accidents in West Africa as impoverished people risk their lives to collect fuel leaking from pipelines or trucks.

#4  Taankers have a very high center of gravity. I don't believe African roads are noted for the stability of their shoulders, if any.
Posted by: Fred || 05/07/2019 9:57 Comments || Top||

#5  I've never been to Niger, but while I'd expect roads to/from the airport to be pretty decent, a little distance away you might find the edge of the pavement to be badly eroded. And if the road isn't paved, not only can the potholes be substantial, but I've seen gulleys cut across the road.

We dreaded hearing the sirens of an entourage (never saw a firetruck go by), because you had to get off the road to let it pass. If the lip between the road and the rest was only 3-4 inches, all was well, but it might be more--and consequently hard to get back on the road.
