Reporter, Rolling Stone Responsible For Defaming U-Va. Dean With Gang Rape Story
[WASHINGTONPOST] A federal court jury decided Friday that a Rolling Stone journalist defamed a former University of Virginia associate dean in a 2014 magazine article about sexual assault on campus that included a debunked account of a fraternity gang rape.

The 10-member jury concluded that the Rolling Stone news hound, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, was responsible for defamation, with actual malice, in the case brought by Nicole Eramo, a U-Va. administrator who oversaw sexual violence cases at the time of the article’s publication. The jury also found the magazine and its parent company, Wenner Media, responsible for defaming Eramo, who has said her life’s work helping sexual assault victims was devastated as a result of Rolling Stone’s article and its aftermath.

The lawsuit centered on Erdely’s 9,000-word article titled "A Rape on Campus," which appeared online in late November 2014 and on newsstands in the magazine’s December 2014 issue. Opening with a graphic depiction of a fraternity gang rape, the story caused an immediate sensation at a time of heightened awareness of campus sexual assault, going viral online and ripping through the U-Va. community.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela’s Maduro Vows ‘Revolution’ Will Continue
[LAHT] The Venezuelan opposition needs to understand that "the revolution is going to continue," President Nicolas Maduro said Thursday, while urging his political foes to remain part of the dialogue the two sides began earlier this week.

The revolution begun in 1999 by his predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez, "is irreversible," Maduro said in a speech at the presidential palace.

He said that his opponents "must learn to co-exist with the revolution" and to accept the principle of democratic governance.

The leftist head of state went on to accuse the MUD opposition alliance of looking for "excuses" to abandon the dialogue that got under way last Sunday under the auspices of the Union of South American Nations and the Vatican.

Addressing opposition leaders, Maduro said: "I am the only president of the republic who ensures that you continue existing and the MUD continues exercising its political rights ‐ and you know it."

Earlier Thursday, the MUD set several conditions for resuming talks with the government on Nov. 11, including a demand that both sides commit to an "electoral solution" to the nation’s political crisis.

That electoral solution could involve a reactivation of a suspended presidential recall referendum process or early presidential elections, opposition Mayor Carlos Ocariz said.

Maduro responded to Ocariz by accusing the MUD of presenting an ultimatum and creating "false expectations."

"Nobody can say that in 10 days, if the government doesn’t respond the way they want ... they will go to war," the president said. "Nobody can accept that."

#3  The Venezuelan Revolution worked great for the Chinese. They not only got a LOT of cheap below market price oil out of Venezuela that they resold to the US at a substantial markup, they also locked up a lot of mineral rights.

The Grand Turk
Social media interrupted in Turkey after crackdown
[IsraelTimes] WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube slowed or stopped after government arrests top Kurdish.

Internet users in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
were on Friday experiencing severe difficulties accessing social media after the country was plunged into new turbulence by the detention of its main pro-Kurdish leaders, correspondents and a watchdog said.

The messaging service WhatsApp was not working while users were also reporting severe problems accessing Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other sites, AFP correspondents and Internet users said.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirm did not directly confirm that blocks were in place but acknowledged that "from time to time for security reasons we can use such measures."

"These are temporary measures. Once the danger is passed, everything returns to normal," he told news hounds in Istanbul in televised comments.

The problems came after 11 MPs from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), including its co-leaders Figen Yuksekdag and Selahattin Demirtas, were detained in an unprecedented crackdown.

Turkey is regularly accused of blocking access to social media in heightened situations such as terror attacks.

The monitoring site Turkey Blocks said that Twitter, Facebook and YouTube were down in Turkey while restrictions had also been imposed on WhatsApp, Skype and Instagram.

The site, which monitors internet restrictions in Turkey, said this had been carried out by a "throttling" at Internet Service Provider (ISP) level, including national providers like TTNet and Turkcell.

"Internet restrictions are increasingly being used in Turkey to suppress media coverage of political incidents, a form of censorship deployed at short notice to prevent civil unrest," it said.

It said that while there had been restrictions on Twitter and Facebook in the past, this was the first time that popular messaging services like WhatsApp were affected.

Users in the southeast of Turkey had last week reported major difficulties in using the internet.

Many internet-savvy Turks during such times turn to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to subvert the restrictions on public servers.

Deaths, injuries in car bombing in Turkey; Kurdish legislators held
[AlAhram] A large kaboom, caused by a boom-mobile, hit the largest city in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's mainly Kurdish southeast region on Friday, hours after authorities detained at least 12 pro-Kurdish politicians for questioning in terror-related probes.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said both police and non-combatants were killed in the attack but did not say how many. The state-run Anadolu Agency said one person was killed and some 30 others were maimed.

The blast occurred in Diyarbakir's Baglar district, near a building used by the riot police. The Diyarbakir governor's office said the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, had claimed the attack.

Anadolu said the attack was carried out with a minibus laden with a ton of explosives.

The blast caused a large crater near the police building and damaged several buildings and businesses nearby. Television footage showed people walking among glass and other debris near buildings with windows blown out.

Hours earlier, police detained 11 politicians from the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party, or HDP, including the party's two co-chairs, Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag.

The detentions occurred in the middle of the night, with co-chair Demirtas describing on Twitter how he was taken into custody: "Police officials are at the door to my house in Diyarbakir with a detention warrant."

State-run Anadolu Agency reported co-chair Yuksekdag was detained in her home in Ankara. Other bigwigs taken away included Sirri Sureyya Onder and Idris Baluken. A twelfth politician was also detained during the day.

An Interior Ministry statement said a total of 15 detention warrants were issued by the chief public prosecutors in Diyarbakir and the provinces of Sirnak, Hakkari, Van and Bingol. Two of the politicians were determined to be abroad, and authorities are still searching for one.

Anadolu reported the politicians were detained for not appearing in court to testify in ongoing terrorism-related investigations.

The government accuses the HDP of being the political arm of the PKK, an accusation the party rejects.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
and other senior government officials have repeatedly called for the prosecution of pro-Kurdish politicians on terrorism-related charges, which was made possible after legal immunities protecting politicians from prosecution were lifted in May.

Hundreds of charges were filed against HDP politicians following the lifting of immunity, including "disseminating terrorist propaganda" and "membership in an armed terrorist organization."

Demirtas reportedly reacted to the lifting of immunity by saying none of his fellow party members would voluntarily appear in court to testify. "If they want our testimony they'll have to force us there," he said, according to Anadolu.

Justice Minister Bozdag defended the detentions in a speech Friday, "The politicians that were detained did not help the legal process to proceed, they did not recognize the law. They did not respect the law."

Earlier this week Gultan Kisanak, the HDP mayor of the largest predominantly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, along with co-mayor Firat Anli, was tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
over alleged membership in the PKK.

In September, the government similarly ousted 28 mayors and other administrators, mostly from the HDP, and appointed trustees in their place.

#1  Totalitarian march in the Sultanate of Erdogan continues. The silence imposed on the press. Any non-compliant judges and police officials shortly purge. They closed off the internet and opponent rely on it. All the bad things in the blame on the Kurds.

Now they are criminalizing to be Kurdish political opponent of Erdogan. Being Kurd will be a crime next.

How long until that fascisti Turkey began with a march of death to camps as the Armenians?

They will slave or kill all they can. Freedom is all Kurds want. Why does the USA not care?

Bay of Pigs Veterans Assn Endorses Donald Trump
[TownHall] "Miami's veterans of the Bay of Pigs invasion voted late Wednesday (Oct. 12) to endorse Donald Trump for president, the first endorsement in the organization's 55-year history."

Fifty years before Benghazi we had the Bay of Pigs:

The pleas came from Commander Jose San Roman as Soviet tanks, Soviet artillery and tens of thousands of Soviet led troops pounded the 1400 Cuban freedom-fighters he commanded on a bloody and heroic beachhead now known as the Bay of Pigs.

The same heartsick and enraged U.S. Navy men listening to these pleas had escorted these freedom‐fighters to that beachhead. Their ships--including the aircraft carrier Essex groaning under a heavy load of deadly Skyhawk jets‐ sat just offshore.

"If things get rough," radioed back the heartsick CIA man who helped train and had befriended them, "we can come in and evacuate you."

"We will NOT be evacuated!" San Roman roared back to his friend Grayston Lynch, a multi-decorated WWII and Korea war hero. "We came here to fight! We don’t want evacuation! We want more ammo! We want the planes that were promised! This ends here!"

Camelot’s criminal idiocy as the U.S.-trained freedom-fighters battle savagely against outrageous odds finally brought Adm. Arleigh Burke of the Joints Chief of Staff, who was receiving the battlefield pleas, to the brink of mutiny. Years earlier, Adm. Burke sailed thousands of miles to smash his nation’s enemies at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Now he was Chief of Naval Operations and stood aghast as new enemies were being given a sanctuary 90 miles away!
Con't.

Spot welding on USS Montgomery pops in canal collision
While guided by the Panamanian pilot.
The Littoral Combat Ship USS Montgomery (LCS-8) suffered damage during a transit through the Panama Canal on its way to its new homeport in San Diego, Calif., USNI News has learned.

Montgomery, was crossing from the Atlantic to the Pacific when the LCS collided with one of the walls of the lock and suffered damage to the hull on Oct. 29, Cmdr. Ryan Perry with U.S. 3rd Fleet told USNI News on Monday.

“Under control of the local Panama Canal Pilot, the ship impacted the center lock wall and sustained an 18-inch-long crack between her port quarter and transom plates,” Perry said.
“The crack is located 8-10 feet above the waterline and poses no water intrusion or stability risk.”

The ship is now on the Pacific side of the canal heading to its new homeport.

#8  SteveS, the Montgomery is one of the trimaran designs. I'm not a naval engineer, but it seems to me that the trimaran design could have some interesting effects, although at the low speeds used while transiting the locks it should be a huge deal.

Having the pilot in control should relieve the captain and the OOD (Officer of the Deck) from responsibility - so they won't be relieved.

On the other hand, if a low speed collision opens up a 18 inch crack, I wonder how she would handle in really heavy weather.

D.C. taking possession of Walter Reed property from Army
[Wash Times] After 11 years of wrangling, the campus of Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Georgia Avenue now belongs to the District -- and in coming years will become a town center featuring office buildings, shops, apartments and a grocery store.
Once opulent, palm lined and manicured U.S. facilities and troop housing in Panama.
The palms are still there...
"The wait is over, and a new beginning is in sight at Walter Reed," D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said Wednesday at a ceremony in which the Army signed over ownership of the property to the District.

"The Walter Reed Campus is one of the most important development projects in the District," Miss Bowser said. "It will bring jobs, affordable housing, economic opportunity and pathways to the middle class for thousands of residents."

Walter Reed, which served as the Army’s flagship medical center since 1909, was slated for closure in 2005 by the Defense Department’s Base Realignment and Closure Commission. In 2011 the facility was officially closed and replaced by the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

After more than 100 public meetings in a planning process that started in 2009, the District struck a deal with the Defense Department to buy 66 of Walter Reed’s 113 acres (including all the land that fronts Georgia Avenue) for $22.5 million. The remaining land will go to the State Department and the Children’s National Medical Center.
