Busy Chicago week end: 10 KIA, 41 WIA
[Chicago Tribune] For the second weekend in a row, more than 50 people were shot in Chicago as the number of homicides this year rose to more than 50 percent above the same period last year.

More than 660 people have been killed in the city so far this year, according to data compiled by the Tribune. The number of people shot in Chicago this year is more than a thousand above what it was this time last year, from 2,620 to 3,795, according to Tribune data.

From Friday afternoon to late Sunday, 10 people were killed and 41 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago, in addition to a man shot to death by police on Saturday, police said.

Among the wounded was a 78-year-old man who was dragged out of a car in Englewood on Sunday and shot in the head. He was listed in serious condition.

Five people were shot in a single attack in Uptown early Saturday morning, police said. Two men, two women and a 17-year-old boy were shot about 1:35 a.m. in the 4800 block of North Winthrop Avenue. They were all taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.

An additional 3 KIA and 15 WIA since Monday morning.

Or as we native Chicagoans would say, "slow week"...

U.S. Navy's Newest Warship Has No Ammunition for Its Big Guns
The U.S. Navy is slated to cancel the projectiles for the two big guns that outfit its newest and most advanced warship due to excessive costs that total an estimated $800,000
Gulp!
per round.

The Long Range Land-Attack Projectile, or LRLAP, is the only guided precision ammunition designed to be fired by the USS Zumwalt, a land-attack destroyer that was created to hold two 155 millimeter/62-caliber Advanced Gun Systems that could, according to defense contractor Lockheed Martin, "defeat targets in the urban canyons of coastal cities with minimal collateral damage," Defense News reported.

The announcement comes just two weeks after the U.S. Navy commissioned the warship.

Woman pushed to her death in front of New York subway train
[REUTERS] A woman shoved an unsuspecting traveler off a New York City subway platform into the path of an approaching train on Monday afternoon, killing the victim instantly as bystanders watched in horror, police said.

The victim, also a woman, was pushed onto the tracks as a southbound No. 1 train pulled into the Times Square station around 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), and she was pronounced dead.
He's dead, Jim!
on the scene shortly afterward. Witnesses immediately alerted coppers, who apprehended the suspect in the station.

Neither the victim nor the suspect was immediately identified by authorities.

"What happened here today is tragic," Joseph Fox, chief of transit for the New York City Police Department, told news hounds at the midtown Manhattan subway station, one of city's largest and busiest.

The victim was standing on the platform when the suspect, wearing a pink shirt and scarf, lunged at her, police said.

Two hours after the incident, emergency responders were working to remove the woman's body from the tracks and resume subway service at the station before peak evening commuting hours.

Investigators were reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses to determine a motive, said William Aubry, the police department's chief of Manhattan detectives.

Many of those who saw the attack were visibly shaken. Some witnesses said the victim and the suspect were involved in a dispute before the fatal shove, Aubry said, but it was not immediately clear whether the women knew each other.

Afghanistan
4 Afghan woman killed by a relative in Balkh province of Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least four women were rubbed out by a relative in northern Balkh province of Afghanistan amid a surge in violence against women across the country.

The local security officials in Balkh said the man opened fire on the women in Balkh district late on Sunday night.

Provincial security chief Abdul Razaq Qaderi confirmed the incident and said the assailant managed to flee the area after killing 4 women and leaving two others including a man and a woman maimed.

He said the dead bodies of the victims have been transferred to the hospital and a search operation is underway to arrest the perpetrator.

No further details were given regarding the main motive behind the brutal killling of the women.

This comes as numerous incidents involving murder of women have been reported during the recent months across the country.

A young woman was set on fire by her husband in western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province of Afghanistan earlier last month.

Earlier, the Talibs executed a 19-year-old girl in Sar-e-Pul province of Afghanistan while a 22-year-old woman was rubbed out in July by her relatives on charges of having relations with an stranger over the telephone.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in its report released late in November last year said "statistic of violence against women, obtained from the registered cases of violence against women during the first six months in 1394 exceeds 2579 cases."

The report further added that figure was reported 2403 cases during the six months in 1393 which shows 7.32 percent increase in 1394, the last solar year.

3rd South African party wants to seize land from whites
[AA.TR] The leader of a South African far-left opposition party Monday threatened to seize white-owned lands.

Julius Malema, the head of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the third largest party in parliament, spoke to supporters after appearing in court in the northeastern city of Newcastle.

’’White minorities be warned! We shall take our land. It doesn’t matter how," said Julius Malema outside the magistrate’s court.

Malema was appearing in court to answer to charges of inciting his supporters to take over white-owned land. His case has been postponed to Dec. 7.

In 2016, he reportedly told supporters that whites could not claim ownership of land in South Africa because it belonged to native blacks.

During his televised address on Monday, Malema claimed that white South African settlers had killed hundreds of blacks who had refused to be removed from their land.

’’We are not calling for the slaughtering of white people at least for now,’’ he said amid cheers from his supporters.

Land is a highly contentious subject in South Africa 22 years after the end the racial segregation known as apartheid.

Malema said South Africa’s economy was still controlled by white capitalists despite the end of apartheid.

His EFF, which broke away from the ruling African National Congress, has been championing for land expropriation without compensation.

AfriForum, an organization representing minorities in the country, has on several occasions condemned Malema’s comments accusing him of inciting hatred against whites.

The San people, a light brown-coloured delicate and fine-boned people are native to South Africa. Bushmen of the Kalahari they're now called because they were pushed out by both black and white.

The blacks are native to the Great Lakes region. They swept over the continent destroying the other tribes because they are more aggressive with superior survival skills. the whites withstood their advance because of superior technology.

Outrage over beating of Freedom Fighter by Jhenaidah politicos floods social media
[Dhaka Tribune] CCTV footage of an older man being mercilessly beaten by a group of young men has created an uproar on social media since Monday afternoon.

The video shows five men launch a lightning attack on an elderly man with canes and a metal rod, repeatedly hitting him on the arms and legs as he tries to protect himself with his bare hands.

The time stamp on the CCTV image shows that the attack took place on September 18 around 6:40pm.

Immediately after being floated on Facebook, the footage went viral and comments and opinions from angered netizens started pouring in.

At one point, a young man in a red shirt comes to the rescue and tries to prevent the perpetrators from continuing to beat him. Eventually, he manages to fend off the attackers, taking a severe beating in the process.

The injured man appears to be in shock and stumbles into a chair.

After a brief lull in the violence, the footage shows one of the attackers return. He repeatedly strikes the now injured man who is seen sitting in a chair cradling his injured arm.

The Dhaka Tribune’s Jhenaidah correspondent Nayan Khondoker identified the older man as Muktar Hossain Mridha, 65, and the young man with the red shirt as Golam Morshed Mridha, 30, from Kripalpur village under Abaipur union of the district’s Shailkupa upazila.

They are father and son.

The victim, Muktar Hossain Mridha, was a freedom fighter and a former chairman of Abaipur union. His son is a banker, according to our correspondent.

Quoting the officer-in-charge of Shailkupa cop shoppe Md Tariqul Islam, Nayan reports that the incident took place in front of Jakir Medico, a pharmacy located in front of Shailkupa Health Complex at the upazila headquarters.

The incident was captured by the shop’s CCTV camera, the OC said.

Sumon Mridha, Muktar’s other son, filed a case over the assault on October 19.

In the case statement, he claimed that 10 local politicos, including the upazila vice-chairman, the Jubo League
... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League...
’s upazila unit president, general secretary, Swechchashebak League upazila unit president and Chhatra League
... the student wing of the Bangla Awami League ...
upazila unit general secretary were behind the attack.

Sumon told the Dhaka Tribune that the defendants have been threatening his family ever since a Jhenaidah court granted them bail.

The Dhaka Tribune repeatedly attempted to contact Shailkupa police Sub-Inspector Iqbal Hossain, the investigating officer of the case. He has not received the calls.

The Mridhas are being treated at BDM Hospital in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area after being transferred from Jhenaidah General Hospital at death's door.

China to Build Floating Nuclear Power Plant
What could possibly go wrong?

(Rooters) - China has started to build its first floating nuclear power reactor, which it plans to deploy off its coast by the end of the decade.

The 200-megawatt reactor will help power offshore facilities in China's open sea and island reefs, CGN said, adding that offshore energy supply is an issue that China has to overcome in order to become a naval power.
So they're going to build a nuke plant on a boat?

Canadian man goes diving for sea cucumbers, stumbles across missing US nuclear weapon
[News.com] A man who went diving for sea cucumbers got more than he bargained for when he swam straight into a missing nuclear bomb.

But so unexpected was Sean Smyrichinsky’s find, off the western coast of Canada, that he initially thought it was a UFO.

Now the Canadian Navy has been dispatched to see if the diver’s explosive claims stack up and he really has found an arrant atomic bomb.

If proved right, Mr Smyrichinsky may have inadvertently solved one of the biggest mysteries of the Cold War -- what happened to a nuclear bomb jettisoned by a US aircraft in 1950 just before it crashed.

Mr Smyrichinsky claimed he recently went diving in a remote area close to Pitt Island, off the coast of British Columbia, using an underwater scooter.

#3  The Mark 4 did not have the plutonium “pit” installed, so a nuclear detonation was not possible. The conventional explosive would go off at a pre-set altitude and destroy the bomb and its components. This was a security measure to prevent a complete bomb from being recovered.
The bomb was released at 9,000 feet ( 2,743 meters), north-northwest of Princess Royal Island on the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada. It was fused to detonate 1,400 meters above the surface, and crewmen reported seeing a large explosion.

Nat Geo's famed 'Afghan girl' Sharbat Gula refuses to stay in Pakistan
[DAWN] Nat Geo's famed 'Afghan Girl' Sharbat Gula on Tuesday refused to stay in Pakistain in response to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KP) government's offer to stop her deportation from the country.

A special anti-corruption and immigration court had earlier ordered the deportation of Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed "Afghan Girl" whose 1985 photo in National Geographic became a symbol of her country’s wars, after finding her guilty of illegally obtaining a Computerised National Identity Card.

The court had also sentenced her to 15 days imprisonment and fined her Rs110,000.

Sharbat Gula and Afghan government, in an application submitted to the KP government, pleaded for her departure from Pakistain to Afghanistan on completion of her 15-day sentence on Wednesday [November 9].

The 'Afghan Girl' had pleaded guilty to six charges against her, including her illegal stay in Pakistain, forgery, cheating, tampering with documents and violation of the Nadra (National Database and Registration Authority) Act.

A day after her arrest, the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
High Commissioner distanced itself from Sharbat Gula, claiming that she was not a registered refugee.

The decision of stopping her deportation was taken on Saturday by the provincial government on humanitarian grounds and as a goodwill gesture towards Afghanistan.

KP politician Shaukat Yousafzai while talking to DawnNews said, "We had taken steps to stop Sharbat Gula's deporation but if she wants to leave, it is her decision".

"A delegation of KP assembly will meet Sharbat Gula on Tuesday to express good wishes," he added.

Sharbat Gula will leave for Afghanistan on Wednesday through Torkham border.

Sniper rifles from Britain's Accuracy International are to be used by Lithuania
VILNIUS, Lithuania, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Lithuania's military has received new British-made sniper rifles which will be distributed to troops by the end of the year.

The weapons are AXMC sniper rifles manufactured by Accuracy International Ltd under a contract worth more than $1.4 million.

The AXMC rifles can use either .338 Lapua Magnum or .308 Win ammunition through a barrel change, even in field conditions.

The Lithuanian Land Force previously did not have sniper rifles and used an FN SCAR-H PR semi-automatic precision rifles instead. AXMC sniper rifles double the effective range of the FN's 1,968 feet.

"Accuracy International of the United Kingdom cherishes old traditions of weapon making and is respected worldwide," said MSgt. Ernestas Kuckailis, an expert of sniper and precision rifles with Juozas Lukša Warfare Training Center, Lithuanian Land Force. "The weapons it manufactures are of high quality and reliability in any conditions, including arctic or desert.

AXMC rifle has a powerful Kahles sight and night vision. The new weapon will allow Lithuanian Land Force personnel destroy targets at nearly 1.5-kilometere [nearly 1 mile] distance both during the day and at night."

F-22, F-35 Outsmart Test Ranges, AWACS
How smart is too smart? When F-35 Joint Strike Fighters flew simulated combat missions around Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, their pilots couldn’t see the "enemy" radars on their screens.

Why? The F-35s’ on-board computers analyzed data from the airplanes’ various sensors, compared the readings to known threats, and figured out the radars on the training range weren’t real anti-aircraft sites -- so the software didn’t even display them. While the software and pilots on older aircraft hadn’t noticed the imperfections and inaccuracies in how the Eglin ranges portrayed the enemy, the F-35s’ automated brains essentially said, "Fake! LOL!" and refused to play.

The Eglin anecdote is just one example of how the F-35 Lightning and its twin-engine older brother, the F-22 Raptor -- collectively called fifth-generation fighters -- are overturning how the Air Force operates. The sophistication of fifth gen sensors, software, and stealth requires the Air Force to overhaul training and network infrastructure. They even challenge longstanding assumptions about who makes what decisions and who’s in command. If the pilot of a fifth gen jet infiltrating enemy airspace has a clearer picture of the battle than senior officers further back on a vulnerable AWACS command plane or back at base in Air Operations Center, why should they be telling him or her what to do?
