Twelve Killed in Nigeria Church Shooting
[AnNahar] Twelve worshipers were rubbed out at a church in southeast Nigeria on Sunday, with authorities suggesting the bloodshed was due to a local feud.

At around 6:00 am (0500 GMT), five gunnies shot up St. Philip's church in Ozubulu, near the city of Onitsha, unleashing terror on the congregation, witnesses said.

Chukwuma Emeka said he had just stepped out of the church to stretch his legs "when I heard gunshots and screaming and people running inside."

"When the chaos subsided I went inside, I saw my fellow church members dead in a pool of their own blood and many others were screaming in pain."

Attacks on churches are rare in southern Nigeria, where there is a predominantly Christian population.

The country's mainly-Moslem north has been gripped by a violent campaign by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
jihadists, who specialize in targeting religious centers.

There were varying accounts of what happened in Ozubulu. Witnesses said five gunnies in masks stormed the church, but police said the killing was the work of a lone shooter.

"So far, 12 persons have been confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary here," a worker at Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital told AFP.

Several worshipers with gunshot wounds were also receiving treatment at the hospital, the source said. Witnesses said they feared that up to 20 people may have died.

- 'Feud' -
Garba Umar, Anambra State police Commissioner, said the attacker was a gunman who "went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding" worshipers.

He said the violence was the result of a failed murder attempt, tied to a feud within the local community.

"The information at the disposal of the police is that the gunman had been hired to kill a particular family person believed to be among the worshipers," he said.

Local rights activist Emeka Umeagbalasi said his information about the motive largely concurred with that of the police version.

The gunnies had gone to kill the son of a local chief but failed to find him at his home, Umeagbalasi said.

The attackers then went to the church to hunt for him, but could not find their prey and became angry, he said.

They opened "fire on parishioners and shot indiscriminately," he said, adding that the father of the intended target was shot and maimed.

3,600 Brazilian troops storm Rio slums to catch gang leaders
[DAWN] Thousands of Brazilian army troops raided Rio de Janeiro slums in a pre-dawn crackdown on crime gangs on Saturday, leaving parts of the city looking like a war zone on the first anniversary of the opening of the Olympic Games.

Five areas were targeted by police and 3,600 troops in a swoop starting at 4am, the Rio state security service said in a statement. Their main goal was to stop gangs behind a surge in brazen robberies of commercial trucks, with arrest warrants issued for 40 people. Rio state authorities say there were 10,000 cases of cargo theft last year.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
the unusually aggressive operation also follows wider concerns that nearly bankrupt post-Olympic Rio is spinning out of control. The troops in action were part of 8,500 deployed to the city last month in a tacit acknowledgement that cash-strapped police have lost the ability to cope.

Scores of heavily armed soldiers in camouflage, rows of jeeps and armoured personnel carriers could be seen ringing Lins favela, one of the many little-regulated, and often gang-plagued communities of working class Brazilians that rise on the city’s forest-clad hills.

Troops stood guard with fingers on the triggers of assault rifles, while units of soldiers and SWAT police roamed the streets, pointing their weapons out of car windows.

Everyone entering and leaving the area was subjected to an identity check and search, with men required to lift their shirts. One man was questioned at length about a scar on his stomach and another man’s bag was searched only to find he was carrying a large Bible.

Venezuelans watch the military for signs of fraying loyalty
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] As Venezuela's political crisis spins further out of control, many are looking to the military to see if its once-unflinching loyalty to the socialist revolution might be fraying.

On Sunday morning, Venezuelans awoke to news that a small group of gunnies tried to take over a major military base in the central city of Valencia after a long-mutinous national guard captain appeared in a video calling for rebellion.

The government said what it described as a "terrorist attack" led mostly by civilians dressed in fatigues and deserted officers, not active troops, was quickly put down and seven people were incarcerated
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
. It wasn't clear how much support existed for the so-called "Operation David," but dozens of civilians startled by the sound of gunfire poured into the streets singing Venezuela's national anthem to back the rebels.

Many people wonder whether the tension-filled incident could foreshadow a bigger uprising to come from a military with a long history of rebellion and whose troops - like many Venezuelans - are increasingly caught up in the nation's economic and political crisis.

Analysts say that such a scenario is unlikely for now

#1  ...Yeah, it's not going to be a handful of guys announcing they're overthrowing Maduro, though I could be underestimating the effects of machismo on a platoon of grunts. It's going to be big, it's going to hit hard, and it's going to be over fast. Problem at this point is that ALL of the military leadership there is bound to Chavez' memory and Maduro pretty much personally. They won't pull the trigger until they feel threatened personally, and sadly there's a loooooong way to go before that happens.

North Korea threatens to ‘end the US’
[THESUN.CO.UK] The B-1 bombers were escorted by South Korean fighter jets as they performed a low-pass over an air base near the South Korean capital of Seoul last month.

But Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
’s media branded the move a "hysteric fit" and warned against such "provocations".

North Korea’s KCNA news agency ranted: "The day the DPRK is provoked means the end of the US."

Earlier this week, government-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun declared Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
was sitting on the "knife edge of life and death" and that he should brace himself for "gift packages" from Kim.

An editorial said: "Every minute and every second, the new reality that US mainland is on the knife’s edge of life and death is forcing US administration to wave a white flag and fundamentally change her North Korea policy.

"If the US still refuses to accept such a realistic demand and doggedly pursue hostile policy against North Korea in order to save face, she will receive unexpected ’gift packages’ which we will continue to send."

It is believed the so-called "gift packages" are nuclear missiles.

#2  ...SECSTATE told them yesterday that if they stop firing missiles, we'll consider talking - which is what they've wanted all these years - but the response was just more threats.

It's out of control now, and the only options are bad and worse. Honestly, I served through a good chunk of the Cold War, and I never felt us as close to actually seeing nuclear weapons used as we are now.

He has seen Gaddafi get overthrown for reasons I still don't understand. Saddam and his hellspawn kids deserved it, but it's still unnerving to Ruthless Dictator types like Pudge. Nukes give him a hole card.

If he gives them up, who or what guarantees his security? Uncle Sam? Uncle Xi?

U.N. Approves Sanctions Against North Korea
[OANN] The U.N. Security Council unanimously approves new sanctions against North Korea, following two recent ICBM tests.

The sanctions ban exports from the country totaling $1 billion dollars or more, a measure that is broadly expected to deeply cut into the country’s profits.

Speaking at the meeting U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley
...first woman to serve as Governor of South Carolina, and the second Indian-American governor in the country, after Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. At the age of 39, Haley is the youngest current governor in the U.S., a distinction formerly held by Jindal. She is a Republican, which really grates on the Dems...
praised the move.

"This resolution is the single largest economic sanctions package ever leveled against the North Korean regime," Haley said. "The price the North Korean leadership will pay for its continued nuclear and missile development will be the loss of one third of its exports and hard currency. This is the most stringent set of sanctions on any country in a generation."

SHC CJ suspends Umerkot court official for involvement in torture of health officials
[DAWN] UMERKOT: The Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court has suspended superintendent of district and sessions court Umerkot Akbar Ali Rahimoon, and assured a group lawyers that an impartial inquiry against the rest of persons, including district and sessions judge, involved in alledged humiliation and torture of healthcare officials on court premises would be conducted.

Poonjo Mal Bheel, president of Umerkot District Bar Association, told Dawn on phone that SHC Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh met a delegation of lawyers, including himself, member of the Sindh Bar Council (SBC) Sher Mohammad Wassan, SBC vice president Qurban Malano and Jai Dev Sharma at his office in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
on Saturday and assured them that an impartial inquiry would be launched into the incident.

Two women health officials -- a doctor and a lady health visitor -- were apparently roughed up a few days ago by police in Umerkot when they refused to visit a judge’s home to treat his son.

The CJ also suspended superintendent of district court Mr Rahimoon and vowed that justice would be served to the victimised women, said Mr Poonjo quoting the chief justice.

He said that they also requested the chief justice to appoint an SHC judge to carry out an impartial inquiry against all the persons involved in the incident, including the district and sessions judge, under whose directions it took place.

He said: "It is the worst act in the history of judiciary that innocent women were brought to court through police, and subjected to humiliation, abuse and torture in the courtroom which is paradoxically the place where justice is administered. The sessions judge involved in this crime against health officials has been running the judiciary like his personal fiefdom".

Home Front: Culture Wars
NC State admin proposes exclusive housing for 'women of color'
[CampusReform.org] The new Director of Multicultural Student Affairs at North Carolina State University recently pledged to create a segregated housing option for "women of color" only.

Nashia Whittenburg, who was hired by NC State less than a month ago, shared her plans to create the housing option for female minority students in a university news release published Tuesday, adding that she plans to submit an official proposal for the housing option by February 2018.

"The point and purpose is if you are a Latina and you are an engineering major, with a very specific specialization, you may not ever see anybody who looks like you," Whittenburg explained. "But when you come home, here is your opportunity to get some support and to deal with some of the microaggressions you might have had to deal with throughout your entire day when you’ve been at class."

While NC State already has two housing options for racial minorities--one exclusively for black males and another for Native American students--the school does not currently have one for female racial minority students, hence Whittenburg’s proposal.

Executive Director of University Relations Fred Hartman told Campus Reform that NC State has 16 different "living and learning villages" for students, and while he claimed that the applications for each one are "open to any student," he did not answer whether an applicant’s race would factor into admission decisions.

Hartman also declined to explain to Campus Reform how the segregated housing options are funded.

Whittenburg was hired to manage the school’s Multicultural Affairs Office, which plays host to events such as the "Tunnel of Oppression" (an interactive experience of intersectional oppression) and a "Multicultural Graduation Ceremony."
