South Africa's borders on 'red alert' for Grace Mugabe
[Al Jazeera] South African police have issued a "red alert" on the country's borders to prevent the first lady of Zim-bob-we from fleeing.

Grace Mugabe, 52, is accused of assaulting a female model in a Johannesburg hotel with an electric cable. She has asked for diplomatic immunity in the case and has not yet been charged.

Her whereabouts were not known on Friday but Fikile Mbalula, South Africa's police minister, said she remained in the country.

"We had already put tabs on the borders in relation to her leaving the country," he said.

So far she has not attempted to flee, Mbalula added.

Three killed in Burundi grenade attacks at bars
[Al Jazeera] Grenade attacks on two bars killed at least three people and maimed 27 others in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, police and hospital sources said.

Police front man Pierre Nkurikiye told news hounds on Friday that one person had died at the scene and 29 others were rushed to hospital after grenades were thrown into two bars in the Buyenzi district on Thursday night.

Hospital sources said two people shuffled off the mortal coil later. One survivor, who asked not to be named, said the attackers had not attempted to rob the bars or the patrons.

Burundi has suffered from periodic low-level violence since 2015 when President Pierre Nkurunziza decided to seek a third term in office.

Opponents said his candidacy violated the constitution and a peace agreement that ended a civil war in 2005. The opposition mostly boycotted the polls, and Nkurunziza won a third term.

A wave of unrest followed. The International Criminal Court (ICC) said it left about 450 people dead and forced hundreds of thousands to flee.

Since then, political violence has continued to simmer.

Earlier this month, attackers targeted another bar in the same district, causing two deaths and wounding four.

#2  I have this mental image of a bar in Burundi, and the sign on the door doesn't say "No Firearms", it says "All Firearms Must Be On Safe Position".

Caribbean-Latin America
Constituent assembly assumes power to legislate
[Al Jazeera] Venezuela's new legislative superbody on Friday gave itself the power to pass laws, superseding the opposition-led congress and fuelling criticism by government adversaries that socialist President Nicolas Maduro is consolidating a dictatorship.

Delcy Rodriguez, a Maduro ally and president of the constituent assembly, insisted the move did not imply a dissolution of the congress.

"Those lazy bums have to work. What we are doing is telling them: 'Gentlemen, we are not going to let you take a holiday'," Rodriguez said in a reference to opposition politicians.

South American trade bloc Mercosur condemned the assembly for usurping congress's responsibilities, according to a statement released by Brazil's Foreign Ministry.

China-Japan-Koreas
'An attack on Japan is an attack on US,' says US top general
[DAWN] The United States' (US) most senior military officer on Friday said North Korea understands that any attack on Japan is equal to one on the US itself and vice versa.

General Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, held talks with his Japanese counterpart at the defence ministry in Tokyo, wrapping up a regional tour during heightened tensions with North Korea.

Tokyo remains on alert against potential military provocations by Pyongyang after North Korea threatened to fire missiles towards the Pacific island of Guam, US territory, which would have flown over Japan.

"I think we made it clear to North Korea and anyone else in the region that an attack on one is an attack on both of us," Dunford told Katsutoshi Kawano, chief of staff of Japan's Self-Defense Forces.

Evangelical advisers stay with Trump as others criticize him
NEW YORK (AP) -- One of President Donald Trump’s most steadfast constituencies has been standing by him amid his defense of a white nationalist rally in Virginia, even as business leaders, artists and Republicans turn away.

Only one of Trump’s evangelical advisers has quit the role, while presidential boards in other fields saw multiple defections before being dismantled. The Rev. A.R. Bernard, pastor of the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn and one of the most influential clergymen in New York, announced his decision Friday night, saying "there was a deepening conflict in values between myself and the administration."

Trump’s evangelical council members have strongly condemned the bigotry behind the Charlottesville march by white nationalists and neo-Nazis over the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. But regarding Trump, they have offered either praise for his response or gentle critiques couched within complaints about how he has been treated by his critics and the media.

Like other presidents before him, Trump has turned to religious leaders for counsel and support. Trump’s evangelical advisers include pastors who had worked with his campaign, and now pray with him and consult with his staff on issues ranging from religious liberty in the U.S. to the persecution of Christian minority populations in the Middle East.

Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and an early backer of Trump, said the president had made a "bold truthful statement" about the demonstration. Falwell said the president’s remarks were a clear repudiation of white supremacists, Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.

Johnnie Moore, a public relations executive, faith adviser to the president and a spokesman for several of the evangelical council members, said, "The president is certainly guilty of being insensitive," but that the media and critics of the president have ignored his other comments rejecting white supremacy and anti-Semitism.

Jack Graham, a Texas pastor and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, signaled he planned to stay on as an adviser. The role of faith advisers "is to prayerfully advise & advance Christian issues to the Administration," Graham tweeted.

After the march last Saturday, in which neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan members and others scuffled with counter-protesters, a car driven by an alleged white nationalist plowed into a group of people, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others.

Girl kidnapped 3 days before marriage found dead in a sewer in Mirpurkhas
[DAWN] Police tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
four suspects from the Gugh Mori village near Jhudo town of Mirpurkhas on Friday for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping and death of a 19-year-old girl.

The girl's body was found in a sewer of the village on Friday morning, following which police arrested four out of the six alleged kidnappers.

The victim, Jamaat Kapri, was allegedly kidnapped a fortnight ago from her village Fakir Mohammad Kumbho near Naukot town, just three days before her marriage.

Her father, Parial Kapri, had registered an FIR of his daughter's kidnapping at the Naukot cop shoppe, in which he had nominated six people. However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
those arrested by the police insist that the girl had run away by choice and gotten married to a man named Hassan Kapri. The girl's family denies the claim.

Confirming the incident, the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Jhudo town, Mohammad Ayub Dars, said that the girl's body bore torture marks and had been shifted to Taluka Hospital for his appointment with Doctor Quincy.

Suspect arrested in connection with horrific murder of 8-year-old in Karachi
[DAWN] A Pakistain Steel Mills employee was placed in durance vile
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
by police from Steel Town on Friday on charges of murdering an eight-year-old child.

Police had found the body of a child, Mohammad Subhan, from a garbage dump behind a marriage hall near his home in Gulshan-e-Hadeed on Wednesday.

Subhan had been reported missing since August 14. He had not returned after leaving home to attend an Independence Day celebration.

Police later said the child's injuries suggested that he had been stabbed to death.

"Steel Town police have arrested one suspect, identified as Tasawar Abbas," Senior Superintendent of Police Malir Rao Anwar said on Friday.

Anwar added that the suspect had been picked up from a bachelors' hostel in the Steel Town area, where he lived.

Anwar claimed that the knife used as the murder weapon, had been recovered by police, along with bloodstained clothes belonging to the suspect.

A police official, who requested anonymity, told Dawn that the suspect was familiar with the victim's family and had once visited his home, claiming to be a friend of the dear departed's brother.

Possible motive
Anwar told Dawn that the suspect had taken the child with the intention of subjecting him to criminal assault; however, when the child resisted, the suspect initially throttled him and then stabbed him to death.

The officer revealed that the arrested suspect kept visiting the spot where he had thrown the body for two days and it was him (the suspect, Abbas) who informed the family about the body of the child lying there.

"He had also over-reacted during the funeral prayer of the victim: he was seen weeping," said SSP Anwar.

The police officer said the suspect was detained when the Steel Town SHO saw a blood stain on his (the suspect’s) slippers. When he was grilled, the accused ’confessed’ to killing the child, Anwar said.

Karachi ranked among worst cities of the world to live in
[DAWN] Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
has been named among the least liveable cities of the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) -- the research and analysis division of The Economist Group -- in a report released earlier this week.

Karachi maintains its 134th rank in the listing of 140 cities, only managing to fare better than Port Moresby, Dhaka, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, Lagos and Damascus.

The cities have been ranked according to qualitative and quantitative factors falling broadly in the categories of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

Court sends police officials to jail over alleged negligence in 'honour-killing' case
[DAWN] Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Jacobabad Ghulam Murtaza Maitlo on Friday sent Garhi Khero Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abdul Majeed Abro, SHO Abdul Ahad Soomro, and ASI Eijaz Ahmed Jakhrani to jail after their bail plea was rejected in Anila Dharpali murder case.

Anila Darpali had approached Jackobabad City cop shoppe in 2012, seeking protection as she was reportedly facing life threats on the pretext of Karo-Kari. Instead of producing her before the court or taking her to a shelter house, the police officials handed Darpali back to her relatives on the so-called guaranty of a local contractor Abdul Razzaq Jat.

Later some reports suggested that Darpali was allegedly killed by her relatives, however, the police failed to recover her dead or alive. The fate of the girl still remains a mystery, sources told Dawn.

DSP Abro, SHO Soomro and ASI Jakhrani had been sent to jail due to their alleged negligence, poor performance and mishandling the case. On Friday The ADSJ Jacobabad cancelled the bail plea of the police officials and issued orders to keep all the three in jail custody.

New Orleans' Joan of Arc Statue Vandalized With 'Take It Down'
h/t Instapundit
Another day, yet another statue of a military hero is reportedly under fire. This figure astride a horse was vandalized with the spray-painted words "Tear It Down."

Who was this historical figure? General Lee? Stonewall Jackson? Nathan Bedford Forrest?

No, this was a figure who hails from the north.

Of France:

The phrase "Tear it Down" was hastily sprayed in black paint across the base of the golden Joan of Arc statue on Decatur Street in the French Quarter sometime earlier this week. It has since been removed, with only the vaguest traces of the paint remaining.
