Huffington ignored sexual misconduct in her news website
When Susan Fowler rocked Uber’s world with a meticulous account of the company’s sexual harassment and gender discrimination issues, the ride-sharing service turned to its only female board member to help clean up its culture (and its image). Arianna Huffington was perfectly poised to position herself as the feminist savior who would advocate for Uber’s women—she oversaw the subsequent Eric Holder investigation, and promised that “no brilliant jerks will be allowed, and no one will be protected because they are top performers.” But being a powerful woman with a stake in a company, and its profits, doesn’t mean Huffington was actually the best choice to champion women struggling to make their voices heard.

NBC exec defenestrated over sexual misconduct allegations
NBC Universal fired Senior Vice President for Booking, News & Entertainment Matt Zimmerman, following accusations of sexual misconduct, the company announced Tuesday.

“We have recently learned that Matt Zimmerman engaged in inappropriate conduct with more than one woman at NBCU, which violated company policy,” a company spokesperson told TheWrap. “As a result he has been dismissed.”

US Congresswomen detail sexual harassment
Efforts to combat sexual harassment on Capitol Hill gained momentum on Tuesday as female lawmakers shared stories of male colleagues engaging in predatory behavior.

Women on Capitol Hill Tell of ‘Sex Trade,' ‘Creep List' of Lawmakers
[Breitbart] Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are so predatory that female staffers are advised not to ride in elevators alone with them, according to accounts compiled by CNN.

Females are also admonished to be careful of male lawmakers who sleep in their offices ‐ another "unwritten" rule that women on Capitol Hill live by, according to the outlet.

The outlet spoke to more than 50 lawmakers, current and former staffers, and other political veterans, who revealed a culture so rife with sexual harassment that there is an informal "creep list" of lawmakers to avoid.

Terry Crews publicly named for the first time the high-powered talent agent he claims groped him at an industry party and said he would "not be shamed" about the alleged assault.

"Back in February 2016, I was assaulted by Adam Venit, who is head of the Motion Picture Department at William Morris Endeavor, one of the biggest agencies in the world, period," Crews, 49, said today

Ethereum is an open-source, public, blockchain-based distributed computing platform featuring smart contract (scripting) functionality.

It provides a decentralized Turing-complete virtual machine, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which can execute scripts using an international network of public nodes.

Ethereum also provides a cryptocurrency token called "ether", which can be transferred between accounts and used to compensate participant nodes for computations performed.

The founder, Vitalik Buterin, is no prize , either.

That's the way I've been treating it on tax returns, even though I don't get a 1099-B like you would with a normal stock transaction. That may have changed since 2015, though.

Deposed vice-president who has seized power from Mugabe is a London-educated former spymaster
[DailyMail] The man believed to be behind the coup in Zimbabwe is the country's recently sacked vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa - also known as 'The Crocodile'.

Mnangagwa, 75, is a notorious and much-feared figure in Zimbabwe, having led a vicious crackdown on opponents in the 1980s with the help of the dreaded North Korean-trained Fifth Army brigade.

Thousands of civilians were killed during the Gukurahundi campaign, but Mnangagwa has always denied involvement.

His reputation for cruelty is so legendary that he was one of the few leaders of Zimbabwe known to drive around the country without security.
If it weren't for bad luck, they would have no luck at all

Zimbabwe: Several Explosions Heard in Zimbabwe Capital
[All Africa] At least three kabooms, as well as heavy gunfire, were heard in the Zim-bob-we capital of Harare early Wednesday, according to local witnesses. Witnesses also said military vehicles and soldiers were on the streets early Wednesday, hours after soldiers took over Zim-bob-we's state broadcaster, ZBC. Local residents said instead of the usual 11 p.m. newscast, music videos were played instead.

A front man at the U.S. embassy in Harare told VOA the streets appeared calm overnight Wednesday and had no confirmed sightings of military vehicles. The embassy warned Americans via its web site to "shelter in their residences" and work from home on Wednesday. They said the embassy will be minimally staffed and closed to the public.

On Tuesday, Zim-bob-we's ruling party has accused the armed forces chief of "treasonable conduct" after he threatened to intervene in the country's political affairs.
The statement from the ZANU-PF party was released amid worries that the military might be taking action to oust longtime President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
.

Witnesses reported tanks and armed personnel carriers moving on roads outside the capital; however, Harare was calm and embassies issued no security alerts for their citizens.

Former Rwandan Presidential Hopeful Flees Country
[All Africa] A former Rwanda presidential hopeful has fled the country fearing possible jail term over 'falsified signatures' during his election bid.

Gilbert Mwenedata, one of the two independent candidates disqualified from running in the August 4 poll, said he has been questioned by the police on several occasions over signatures he had submitted to the electoral commission.

In an interview with Radio Itahuka, a web-based station run by exiled Rwandan opposition groups, Mr Mwenedata said he fled the country for fear of arrest and being charged in court like the other disqualified presidential candidate Diane Shima Rwigara.

"What is becoming apparent is that whenever you try to challenge the authority of the incumbent, you end up in jail," Mr Mwenedata is quoted saying.

He added that those who dare to take on President Paul Kagame only find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

"Other than the candidates approved by the ruling party, independent candidates like me and Diane cannot be allowed to contest. If you insist on exercising your democratic right, the consequences can be jail," he said, citing Victoire Ingabire, who is serving a 15-year jail term, and now Ms Rwigara.

Zimbabwe: 'We're Prepared to Die for Mugabe,' Say Zanu-PF Youths After Army Threats
[All Africa] Zim-bob-we's Zanu-PF youths say they are "prepared to die" in defence of President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
's government, a day after the military threatened to intervene if the nonagenarian doesn't rein in his warring Zanu-PF lieutenants.

In a statement on Tuesday, Zanu-PF's secretary of the youth league Kudzai Chipanga said that Zanu-PF youths did not take lightly the military's threats.

"We as Zanu-PF youth league are a lion which has awakened and found its voice, therefore we will not sit idly and fold our hands whilst cheap potshots and threats are made against Mugabe," Chipanga said.

The southern African country's defence forces commander Constantino Chiwenga on Monday demanded a "stop" to the purges in the ruling Zanu-PF party following the sacking of vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Chiwenga criticised the instability in the revolutionary party.

He accused the party of expelling bigwigs who participated in the 1970s war against white-minority ruled Rhodesia; saying "counter revolutionaries" were plotting to destroy the party.

"The current purging and cleansing process in Zanu-PF which so far is targeting mostly members associated with our liberation history is a serious cause for concern for us in the defense forces," said Chiwenga.

He added: "We must remind those behind the current treacherous shenanigans that when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in. The current purging of which is clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith."

But in his response, Chipanga maintained that the threats by the military chief were in violation of the country's constitution and as the youth league they were prepared to defend Mugabe.

"Defending the revolution and our leader and president is an ideal we live for and if need be it is a principle we are prepared to die for. This is an assault on our freedom as we now have a new constitution which places soldiers in barracks and civilian authority in power... The guns will follow the politics and not the politics following the guns. Cde Chiwenga, therefore, cannot be allowed to dictate who will lead the party and the country," said Chipanga.

Chipanga also demanded that the army chief accounts for "the $15bn that he stole with former vice president Mnangagwa."

Zimbabwe military says seizes power to stop 'criminals', Mugabe safe
Zimbabwe's military said it had seized power in a targeted assault on "criminals" around President Robert Mugabe who were causing social and economic suffering, but gave assurances the 93-year-old leader and his family were "safe and sound."

Zimbabwean soldiers and armored vehicles blocked roads to the main government offices, parliament and the courts in central Harare, a Reuters witness said on Wednesday.

While nearby, Zimbabweans queued for cash outside banks as public taxis ferried commuters to work.

"We are only targeting criminals around him (Mugabe) who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice," Zimbabwe Major General SB Moyo, Chief of Staff Logistics, said on national television on Wednesday.

"As soon as we have accomplished our mission, we expect that the situation will return to normalcy."

Arabia
Kuwait banks told to examine Saudi accounts after arrests : Sources
[AlAhram] Kuwaiti banks have been told by the central bank to provide account details relating to some Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
n nationals, sources familiar with the situation told Rooters on Monday.

The move follows the freezing of more than 2,000 domestic bank accounts in Saudi Arabia after the detention of senior business figures and officials in a campaign against alleged graft.

Kuwait's central bank had asked its banks if they had exposure to any of the Saudi citizens who were tossed in the clink
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
, one of the sources said, without providing further information.

Banks had also been asked to provide information about the companies linked to the individuals, the source added.

So far, the information received by the Kuwaiti regulator showed the exposure of Kuwaiti banks to the individuals detained and their companies was limited, the source said.

Rooters reported last week that the central bank in the United Arab Emirates had asked banks to provide details of the accounts of 19 Saudis, including billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who was among those detained.

Some banks in the Gulf Cooperation Council have close links to Saudi Arabia, the largest economy in the six-nation bloc, with a number of Saudi individuals and companies doing business in the neighbouring nations and holding bank accounts there.

A second Kuwaiti banking source said some Kuwaiti banks had been asked by the regulator to provide details on their total exposure to Saudi Arabia.

Some banks in Bahrain had also been asked to provide information on any accounts held by Saudi citizens caught up in the anti-graft campaign, a third source said.

Nobody was available to comment from the Bahrain central bank.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela Goes Bust
More on this story from yesterday.
[WSJ] Another lesson in the price of lending to a socialist regime.
aka, can't run a country on wishes, good thoughts and unicorn farts.
Milton Friedman once joked that if you put the government in charge of the Sahara Desert in five years there would be a shortage of sand. He could have been talking about Venezuela and its oil wealth. But it is no joke.
But still I'm laughing
On Monday Caracas missed interest payments due on two government bonds and one bond issued by the state-owned oil monopoly known by its Spanish initials PdVSA. Venezuela owed creditors $280 million, which it couldn't manage even after a 30-day grace period.

Venezuela is broke, which takes some doing. For much of the second half of the 20th century, a gusher of oil exports made dollars abundant in Venezuela and the country imported the finest of everything. There were rough patches in the 1980s and 1990s, but by 2001 Venezuela was the richest country in South America.

Then in 2005 the socialist Hugo Chávez declared that the central bank had "excessive reserves." He mandated that the executive take the excess from the bank without compensation. Today the central bank has at best $1 billion in reserves.

Falling oil prices are partly to blame, but the main problem is that chavismo has strangled entrepreneurship. Faced with expropriation, hyperinflation, price controls and rampant corruption, human and monetary capital has fled Venezuela.
Also the greed of humans that stripped the wealth of the country, aka communism/socialism
As of Tuesday evening, the Investment Swaps and Derivatives Association still had not declared Venezuela in default. That matters because this will trigger the insurance obligations inherent in the credit default swaps. But S&P Global Ratings declared the country in default Monday. On Tuesday morning the Luxembourg Stock Exchange issued a suspension notice for the bonds with missed payments.

President Nicolás Maduro has formed a commission to restructure up to $150 billion of the debt and put Vice President Tareck El Aissami ‐who is under U.S. sanctions for drug trafficking‐in charge. Mr. El Aissami called a meeting of creditors on Monday in Caracas, which most bondholders did not attend. Press reports said Mr. El Aissami delivered a monologue on Venezuela's intention to pay and took no questions. He argued that Trump Administration sanctions make it difficult for the dictatorship to arrange refinancing.

The real problem is that restructuring assumes the country can grow again. That's nearly impossible without a change in policy that will free the economy.

If Caracas doesn't find a way to settle with bondholders, they will soon ask authorities to seize Venezuelan assets such as oil shipments at sea and Citgo facilities in the U.S. Such are the wages socialism.
And remember, the people voted for this. They still bemoan the current leadership that failed the vision of the previous, just like they did with Stalin.

The previous leader set the stage for the current. They are simply a continuation of the path that was started. And the people voted for this.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Trump Blamed For Global Warming
Drudge headline, not mine, although the article's intent is perfectly clear (and chock full of shit).
[Phys.org] US President Donald Trump's pullout from the Paris Agreement will push up global temperatures nearly half a degree Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100, according to a report released Wednesday at UN climate talks in Bonn.

If all countries‐including the United States‐honour carbon-cutting pledges under the 196-nation treaty, the world would see 2.8 C of global warming above pre-industrial levels, the Climate Action Tracker (CAT) research group had previously calculated.

That is not nearly good enough to avoid climate catastrophe, scientists say.
